Charles Ethan Porter (1847-1923) "Untitled (Cracked Watermelon)" (c. 1890) Oil on canvas Located in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, New York, United States
Porter was among the first African American artists to exhibit his work nationally and the only one to specialize in still lifes. The painting's subject—originally an African gourd brought to the New World by seventeenth-century Spaniards and cultivated by colonists—is significant. Porter chose to paint a watermelon, an earlier symbol of American abundance—and during the Civil War period one particularly associated with free Blacks—when it was increasingly defined by virulent stereotyping. By reclaiming the subject in artistic terms, Porter challenged a contemporary racist trope.

I think everyone have already forgotten the other incarnations of Life, whose designs were drawn last year. All this time they have been on my mind because I also wanted to make them into personalities.

The wild african dog of the five stood out the most, as it belonged to a completely different area. While She-wolf, Bear and Lynx live relatively close to each other, Dog is the only one who lives in isolation and therefore has his own perception of his surroundings (plus the fact that he is blind).
Tumblr media
Goes by the name Kaang. The locals probably believe that he is the god who, according to African mythology, created the world. The Dog doesn't agree, but he doesn't deny the rumors that are created around him x)

The She-wolf might have been one of the few who could, and more importantly wanted to, visit him.
Tumblr media
But Wolf didn't share that opinion. Too alien. Too out of this world x)

Esprit de Corps - When [Kim's] finished with the front page, he scans the local box scores. The Stormers lost again, 17-32. He shakes his head and checks his watch. It's time to get back to it...
Kim Kitsuragi - "*You* could reach the Coalition and have your talk about *la responsabilité*... *I* could grow 10 centimetres and become a flanker for the Stormers."
Titus Hardie - "The Stormers can't play for shit."
so kim is canonically a fan of a team called the "stormers"? guessing rugby based on "flanker".
mileage may vary on "fan". based on titus' line too, i am envisioning them as revachol's absolutely dogshit home team that every vacholiere has a long-suffering fondness for...

The young penguins of South Africa shed their down, preparing for the struggle to come. Since their habitat was destroyed by mining, eggs are laid on sand instead of burrows, and the exposure to the elements kills many eggs before they hatch. Parents are forced to venture many more kilometers out to sea to find fish, as trawlers empty the ocean for distant tables. Regulations limiting fish harvests is desperately needed, not only for sea birds but for people who traditionally make their living fishing off the coast. In international waters, trawlers have total freedom, which can collapse fisheries. Alternatively, reducing ocean fish in your diet can counter this problem.
