The Incomparable Afeni Shakur
Afeni Shakur, was an African American activist, businesswoman, and mother of Tupac Shakur.
Born and raised in North Carolina, Shakur later relocated to New York, and was a part of the ‘Black Panther Party’ during her youth. She opposed social injustice and racial discrimination.
Afeni Shakur was one of the 21 Black Panthers arrested on the charges of conspiracy to carry out bombings at public places. A pregnant Shakur represented herself and was acquitted of all 156 charges.
She brought up her children as a single mother, but later got addicted to drugs. Her son Tupac left home and later earned a name as a rapper.
Afeni successfully overcame her addiction and reunited with her son. Her independent nature and revolutionary influences are reflected in her son Tupac’s lyrics.
After her son’s untimely death she became a source of comfort for other grieving mothers. Traveling across America, she addressed gatherings and gave speeches.
We love and miss Afeni Shakur.

#NewJersey's Supreme Court voted to grant parole to a former member of the #BlackLiberationArmy convicted of killing a state trooper alongside infamous exile #AssataShakur in 1973 - despite outcry from the governor and local police. #SundiataAcoli, 85, had several parole bids previously rejected but his attorneys argued he'd been a model prisoner for nearly three decades and has counseled other inmates. Today's Supreme Court decision overrules the state parole board whcih contended that Acoli is still a risk to commit future crimes and hasn't taken full responsibility for Trooper Werner Foerster´s death. Acoli's more-famous co-defendant, Joanne Chesimard, also known as Assata #Shakur, was convicted and sentenced to a life term but escaped from a New #Jersey prison in 1979. Shakur was given asylum in #Cuba by then-President Fidel Castro and remains a fugitive. She was also famously a 'godmother' to the late rapper #TupacShakur through her friendship with his mother. In a statement, New Jersey's progressive Democrat Governor Phil Murphy said he was 'deeply disappointed' by the ruling. State Attorney General and Murphy appointee Matthew Platkin said in a statement, 'I am grateful to the attorneys in my office who opposed the release of Sundiata Acoli and I am disappointed that he will be released on parole.' Colonel Patrick Callahan, the current head of New Jersey's State Police, wrote on Facebook that he spoke with Foerster's widow Rosa when the news came in. '[She] is as devastated and disappointed by this decision as I am,' Callahan wrote. 'Acoli's release is not only an injustice for the Foerster family and the men and women who serve within the New Jersey State Police, but to every law enforcement officer in this country who dedicates their lives for the safety of the citizens we are sworn to protect.' In Tuesday's 3-2 ruling with Chief Justice Stuart Rabner not participating, the court held that the state parole board didn't meet its required burden of demonstrating there was a substantial likelihood of Acoli committing another crime. #Tupac #AfeniShakur #WonderWombman @wonderwombman @wonderwombman2 https://www.instagram.com/p/CdcGI8FuE4T/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

she was more than just the mother to one of the greatest poets to ever grace this earth. Afeni Shakur sadly passed away on tuesday at the age of 69. it was a weird feeling for me. she unknowingly gave me and the world so much solace. so much confidence. so much inspiration. all through the being that was/is her son. Tupac. 2pac changed the world. no matter your taste on his music. he did. he changed the people in it. and through his music ignited the rage. hope and courage within a generation that spanned the world. he was the reason i wanted to rap. create. he is the reason i am who i am in many ways. but like the first sentence suggests. she was more than just Tupacs mom. she was a revolutionary. she was a Black Panther. a strong and powerful woman. in the case that became the famous ‘panther 21’ case she acted as her own lawyer and she managed to beat the charges against her. an unbelievable and inspiration story of a young black woman in the 70’s. i highlight her race to only show the strength she showed and had during a time in america that showed no humanity towards black people. i feel an odd sadness with this news. i always planned to write her a letter of thanks. so maybe this is it. thank you Afeni. you changed my life. opened my eyes and in a way taught me how to create in the way that i do. you were an angel on this earth. a soldier for your race and extremely inspirational woman.
