That moment when you have to let people be wrong about you because correcting them would make you seem like an unbearable show-off
I was at a bookstore with a friend the other day and I was looking at a book in German that I was interested in buying, but then I saw that it was a translation and had originally been written in French
I commented idly to my friend "Sometimes I don't buy a book because it's a translation and I always prefer to read in the original language when possible" and she said in an agreeing-with-me way, "Yeah it would make more sense to read it in English"
and I realized she assumed I meant English when I said "original language"
but I couldn't bring myself to say "Yeah, or French or Dutch or Spanish or Italian or Portuguese or one of the other languages I read..." because like. who says that kind of thing.
#it's odd but i've suddenly been noticing a lot of people underestimating me lately#like i told a friend i was studying compsci/programming#and she started sending me like... links to absolute beginner 'how to start learning to code' resources#which of course is very sweet and i really appreciate her supportiveness!#so i certainly don't want to say 'lol i passed that point 10 years ago but thanks'#or my friends know perfectly well that i'm a language professional and have spent time studying many languages#but somehow they don't seem to make the connection that that translates into having actual abilities?#like i can piece together the meaning of a sentence in russian or chinese and they'll go 'wtf' like i'm a wizard or something#or i've mentioned a few times that i read for fun in various languages but that seems to just go in one ear and out the other for most folk#and they still can't conceive that i would read a WHOLE BOOK in a language that's not german or english#these are just two examples but i've seen it happen with several other things too#and i'm just... not sure how normal people handle this sort of thing?#how do you let your friends know what you're capable of without coming across as an arrogant prick#i'm not seeking approbation and so i don't tend to boast#but i think maybe i err too hard in the opposite direction?#maybe i've been accidentally implying all these years that i'm Very Amateur in all my interests/hobbies#i don't know how to strike a reasonable balance#but it does feel kind of. weirdly alienating. to suddenly realize most of my friends really don't Know me in this way#cosmo gyres#personal#tag rant#i guess what annoys me is that i'm very careful not to do this to others#if someone tells me about a certain interest or hobby of theirs i assume by default that they must know So Much about it#and if i dare to send them or suggest them anything i always preface it with 'you probably already know this but...'#or 'this may well be something that's painfully obvious to someone with your expertise but...'#and i would try to never make any statement or suggestion that implies i think they're at a low level in [whatever that thing is]#so it bothers me a bit when other people don't take the same consideration. i guess.#(not enough to do anything about it beyond blogging with mild annoyance. but hey)

[a few days after the CCC Avatars and their games are taken, most of the characters relevant to the situation (notably all the Avatars except for the missing ones (obviously) and all the SMGs except 7 and 10 (for spoiler reasons)) are called to a meeting at 4's Meme Factory (since it's one of the few places that many people can meet comfortably) by Susie]
SMG3: Alright, why'd you call us all here?
Susie: I'm glad you asked *starts rummaging through a storage device* As you know, I've been studying code samples from the missing Avatars in the hopes of finding out the reason behind their memory suppression-and hopefully a cure for it-since before they were taken. And as it happens, a bit before I was informed of their capture I managed to synthesize this! *pulls out a large beaker of faintly glowing green liquid with lines of binary occasionally scrolling through it*
Several audience members: Oooooooooooo...
Mario: ...What is it?
Susie: This is a replica of the trojan program used to lock their memories, written is such a way that it can be represented as a liquid for ease of analysis. *she sets it on a table behind her* Most likely a similar method was used to administer their doses in the first place, possibly as some form of penetrating projectile designed to dissolve into their bloodstreams upon entry. AND, it just so happens to be completely identical to the code that made up the energy field generated by Lawyer Kong's so-called "firewall." Thus, the cure is obvious; Memes.
SMG6: But...we tried that already. It only worked for a few minutes, and only once.
Susie: That would be because of the one way the two afflictions differ; the firewall was an external source that people could be shielded from, while the trojan program is internal and needs to be overwhelmed and purged, and the latter will require a far more potent Meme than the former.
Which, unfortunately, is my current roadblock. See, if we make the memes too potent, they'll trigger a Meme Overload. That wouldn't have been a problem before they were captured-well, apart from Juliano given his condition, but still- but now they have to be administered while we're rescuing them from wherever they ended up, and we most likely won't have the time to bring them back down to manageable levels of insanity in the middle of that. So, we need to figure out the exact right dosage of Meme Energy that will cure them without making them go crazy.
Bob: ...Which means you need a test subject.
Susie: *nods* Now, in the interest of fairness I've put the names of everyone here who isn't an OC into a random number generator so-
???: *minecraft potion drinking sound* Mmm, kiwi flavor.
*everyone slowly turns with a comical creaking sound effect to see Franky holding the now-empty beaker*
Lily: We probably should've seen that coming.
Franky: *after a second or so there's the same audio and visual effect as when Mario got firewalled in the Lawsuit Arc, causing Franky to fall to his hands and lack-of-knees as the energy takes hold. His model slowly reverts to his old look as a generic Toad with glasses, and when the transformation is over he falls onto his face*
Desmond: FRANKY! *runs up to him and picks him up so he can see his face* Are you okay?
Franky: ...Who's Franky?
Everyone: *stares very intensely at Susie*
Susie: *weakly* ...Well...that's one way to choose I guess. *feels Peach, Toadsworth, Sage and Desmond suddenly looming ominously behind her* Right, let's go see about cooking up that cure, shall we? *grabs all the SMGs, Franky and Luigi and Books It deeper into the factory* Alright team, to the Meme Kitchen on the double!

Question for my tech mutuals:
Google drive is finally getting broken enough that I'm considering switching to etherpad. Since I'm in google's device ecosystem (and I probably wouldn't know how to run etherpad anyway), that seems to mean I need an online service that already hosts etherpad on their own servers.
Can anyone recommend a good one? With easy UI, since I'm not as tech-savvy as I tend to sound?
I use both duckduckgo and chrome browsers, if that makes a difference

Reading Kunigei is a strange experience. It's very obnoxious how Kagami doesn't do much for movie making despite claiming to have a passion on it while Kado who go too far opposite devoting to movie makings at the cost of everything including ruining actor's mental health and the whole university are nothing but unpeasant the way they gave Kado nothing but praise and even laugh at Kagami's determination without giving any real advice. But it's also a very bold, brutal depiction of how industry can and will exploit individuals in the name of entertainments.

Also don't forget White Rabbit (Photoshop CS5) and Photopea (online Photoshop.)
Also also, Aggie.io for sketches.
Or if you really don't care- there's Microsoft Paint on Windows PCs that comes preinstalled.

#bringbackfigures Figures are a large part of the reason we got people like Petr Barna back in the day, IMHO. Some skaters are still excellent at footwork but it's not as widespread.
I'm always impressed with intentional falls. When I fall, I get up quick enough if I can because I don't want to impede traffic, but I sure as hell don't keep going without a blip. I can't even imagine doing it on purpose. That heel-braking maneuver should be physically impossible. I don't even to think about how many times he probably hit the back of his head while perfecting it.

Frustrated that people continued to consume so much alcohol even after it was banned, federal officials had decided to try a different kind of enforcement. They ordered the poisoning of industrial alcohols manufactured in the United States, products regularly stolen by bootleggers and resold as drinkable spirits. The idea was to scare people into giving up illicit drinking. Instead, by the time Prohibition ended in 1933, the federal poisoning program, by some estimates, had killed at least 10,000 people. [...] By mid-1927, the new denaturing formulas included some notable poisons—kerosene and brucine (a plant alkaloid closely related to strychnine), gasoline, benzene, cadmium, iodine, zinc, mercury salts, nicotine, ether, formaldehyde, chloroform, camphor, carbolic acid, quinine, and acetone. The Treasury Department also demanded more methyl alcohol be added—up to 10 percent of total product. It was the last that proved most deadly. The results were immediate, starting with that horrific holiday body count in the closing days of 1926. Public health officials responded with shock. “The government knows it is not stopping drinking by putting poison in alcohol,” New York City medical examiner Charles Norris said at a hastily organized press conference. “[Y]et it continues its poisoning processes, heedless of the fact that people determined to drink are daily absorbing that poison. Knowing this to be true, the United States government must be charged with the moral responsibility for the deaths that poisoned liquor causes, although it cannot be held legally responsible.” His department issued warnings to citizens, detailing the dangers in whiskey circulating in the city: “[P]ractically all the liquor that is sold in New York today is toxic,” read one 1928 alert. He publicized every death by alcohol poisoning. He assigned his toxicologist, Alexander Gettler, to analyze confiscated whiskey for poisons—that long list of toxic materials I cited came in part from studies done by the New York City medical examiner’s office. Norris also condemned the federal program for its disproportionate effect on the country’s poorest residents. Wealthy people, he pointed out, could afford the best whiskey available. Most of those sickened and dying were those “who cannot afford expensive protection and deal in low grade stuff.” And the numbers were not trivial. In 1926, in New York City, 1,200 were sickened by poisonous alcohol; 400 died. The following year, deaths climbed to 700. These numbers were repeated in cities around the country as public-health officials nationwide joined in the angry clamor. Furious anti-Prohibition legislators pushed for a halt in the use of lethal chemistry. “Only one possessing the instincts of a wild beast would desire to kill or make blind the man who takes a drink of liquor, even if he purchased it from one violating the Prohibition statutes,” proclaimed Sen. James Reed of Missouri.
This isn't particularly relevant to anything specific. I just wanted to remind everyone this is something the US government did.
