“Hey kiddo, watcha doing out here?”

Aerina looked up from where she was crouching on hands and knees in the dirt.

“Looking at bugs.”

“Oh, really?” Dai crouched down next to her. “What are they doing?”

“Just walking. Sometimes carrying stuff. I like blocking their path ‘cause it makes them all confused, but then they find a way around it.”

Dai observed the trail of ants, which went across or around several rocks, leaves and whatever other items his daughter had been able to find. On the ground not far from her lay a small notebook with a pencil, which she’d clearly forgotten about as it had dirt and leaves all over it.

He picked it up and brushed off some of the dirt. It was one of her school worksheets. At the top it was labelled “animals around my house”. Below that, it read “KITY”, but the rest of the page was empty.

“What’s this?” he asked, holding it up.

“My homework for tomorrow.”

“Shouldn’t you get started on that?”

“I will, in a minute.”

“It will be dark in a minute; it’s almost your bedtime. How about we fill it out together?”

She let out a long, dramatic sigh, as only a 5-year-old could, and pushed herself up from the ground.

“I guess the ants will have to survive without me,” she shrugged.

“I’m sure they’ll be fine,” he smiled. “That’s one more animal to put on the list.”

He handed her the booklet back. “ANTS” she scrawled on it – only the “N” was backwards.

“Now what other animals have you seen today?”

“There was a biiiiiiiig spider next to the door. But I acted like I didn’t see it, so it probably went away.”

“Maybe,” Dai nodded, pretending to understand this logic. “But we can still write it down.”

She scribbled some more, the tip of her tongue sticking out of her mouth.

“What else? Did you see any birds?”

She thought about this for a bit.

“Not today, but there were small birds when I put out bread that one time, and then a big crow showed up and took it aaaaaaall the way to the top of the tree!”

“I remember,” Dai smiled. “Then you put out more bread because you felt bad for them.”

“Because they were so small. It’s really hard to get what you want when you’re small.”

Dai was impressed by this little bit of wisdom while watching her write down “BURDS”, when she suddenly jumped up, pointing.

“Look, a bird!”

From the corner of his eye, Dai caught something fluttering through the air. A moment later he saw another, merely a silhouette against the twilight sky.

“It’s a little late for birds, but do you know what else likes to fly around, especially when it gets dark out?”

She thought for a moment.

“People think they’re a little spooky,” he hinted.

“Bats!”

“That’s right! They’re out hunting for tasty bugs.”

She added the bats to her list, while keeping an eye on the sky in case she’d miss any flying over.

“That should be enough for your homework, don’t you think?”

She nodded, then frowned as she realised this likely meant she had to go to bed.

“Can we watch the bats a little longer? Pleeeaaase?”

Dai sighed.

“Alright, then. But come here, it’s getting chilly.”

She snuggled up to him, occasionally pointing out a bat flying over, counting them. After twenty or so, he thought she was getting suspiciously quiet and realised she’d fallen asleep on his lap.

He picked her up and carried her inside, smiling to himself.
