I love it. That Jubal-lun-Sul is a salt merchant who must embark on a trial in order to become ready to marry Vivec and heal Lorkhan and the world frames it nicely as an alchemical story. The Tomorrowind section nicely recontextualises the basic conflict within Morrowind and the need to combat virulent advertising and the overabundance of noise within a signal is a good restatement of the conflict against Dagoth Ur. The accusations flung at Numidium, the Dwemer, House Hlaalu are good invectives against a reductive materialism. The fourtj wall breaking and rewrites and very loose canon counteract a tendency towards centralised control of narrative within genre fiction. The NO MORE WHEEL, The Worlding of the Worlds is AMARANTH and flower child stuff is very New Aeon.

I've never understood people who want TES to be a more conventional fantasy universe as though there is any shortage of those.

It's reassuring Lawrence Schick (how many TSR oldheads were involved in ESO btw? a lot) liked it and the little reference to it within ESO was cool. Shame Ayrenn wasn't KINMUNE (although that's another thing entirely) and that ESO is in general kind of a chore to play.

Aeon's Domain

Creates a domain within a radius of 100 meters from the user wherein the environment can be changed to whatever the user desires; it can be an exact replica of where the user is, or a completely different setting. Madison can change the environment to her will and in a matter of seconds. When this ability is in effect, the environment may turn into a shade of red or be immediately fine-tuned to replicate an environment.

This domain entraps any being in its radius, essentially "transporting" them into a parallel world/environment that the user creates. Non-stand users can also be confined within the domain but once Madison sees or senses someone who may be in danger, she can bring them out of the domain ala quickly "vaporizing" them into thin air. Madison can also use the environment against a target whether that would mean manipulating conditions in that setting such as weather or temperature, or using elements from the surroundings directly against the target.

WEAKNESSES:

The 100m radius does not move with Madison. Once she sets up the domain in a certain spot, Scarlet Aeon will stay hidden there and be rendered immobile to act as the energy for maintaining the domain. If an enemy detects the location of her stand, they may inflict damage on Scarlet Aeon. This will then endanger both Madison and the domain's state.

Anyone in the domain (ally, enemy, or civilian) is trapped and can only escape it if Madison either: deactivates it, an ally asks Madison to take them out of the domain, she takes the person out of the domain, or if she takes severe/life-endangering damage.

If she takes someone out of the domain, she cannot bring them back in. This is because the domain acts as a world/universe/environment separate of that from which they left.

Madison can either boost another stand user's power/ability or choose to nullify it.

WEAKNESSES:

There are several conditions that need to be met in order for this ability to work.

1: It can only be done INSIDE the domain.

2: Madison needs to have a clear understanding of the stand user's ability. Trying to nullify or power up the stand's ability will not work if she doesn't completely grasp the logic of its powers.

3: Finally, both the stand and its stand user must be present in the domain.

Cardinal Judgment

An ability used to diminish a person's willpower through psychological means and coerce them into giving whatever the user desires be it information, material possessions, or something else. These means may include extreme guilt-tripping, intimidation, mental torture, and more. Madison uses this for psychological fights and interrogations, diving into the target's mind and using their repressed fears, traumas, and weaknesses against them.

WEAKNESSES:

As this is a mental battle with the target's psychological condition, Madison must have a strong mental state. If she cannot control her emotions and state of mind her power may turn against her and provide an open avenue for the enemy to mentally strike back.

Vectors are telekinetic energy weapons that manifest as "arms" and are used for various purposes by Madison. They appear to merely hover around her back and are invisible to people, Stand Users included. One can only feel the vectors should they be directly hit by them or that one can hear them if they consider the sound of air rushing when the vectors move.

Theory: Todd is the sleeping Godhead that we all talk about. Also he achieved absolute CHIM

You're definitely free to come up with whatever theory on that you like, but if you're genuinely curious, I would say you're a bit off from the intended takeaway.

Trying to figure out who the Godhead is a bit of a self-defeating exercise. In fact, to get a bit ahead of the point I'm going to make, it's often easier to describe the One by what he is not. If you're looking at the rare in-series mentions of the Godhead (most of the uses of "godhead" are actually referring to more generic godhood, which is also a more modern form of "godhead"), you come up with two mentions of the Godhead, and only one of them describes the Godhead at all.

The eyes, once bleached by falling stars of utmost revelation, will forever see the faint insight drawn by the overwhelming question, as only the True Enquiry shapes the edge of thought. The rest is vulgar fiction, attempts to impose order on the consensus mantlings of an uncaring godhead.

From Waking Dreams of A Starless Sky

The Godhead is uncaring. And that is basically the depth of actual text on the Godhead. If you go with sources that did not appear in the game, you'll do a bit better, but not really to any satisfying degree. So how do we get a satisfying answer? We escape the confines of the rare and deliberately esoteric mentions of this part of the lore and look at its real-world inspiration. Speaking for myself, the best summary of this part of the lore I ever read is:

Sincerely, after reading that and its associated articles, I went from "wow this is all a bit complex" to "alright, this is surprisingly straightforward". To tangent slightly, while there are numerous fan writings that try to explore these concepts, and I do enjoy a lot of them, I find that some of them often have trouble expressing what it all actually means because they often restrict themselves to the trappings of TES. We're going to remove those trappings, and see if it helps.

If you want more help, here is how I mentally tie some TES lore topics to its real world counterpart.

The Godhead is the Godhead (Monad)

CHIM is Gnosis

CHIM has been described as the secret syllable of royalty. It is best understood as a state of being which allows for escape from all known laws and limitations. It is the process of reaching some sort of epiphany about the nature of the universe and one's place in it, leading to a simultaneous comprehension of the full scope of existence as well as one's own individuality.

Gnosis is the common Greek noun for knowledge. It is best known from Gnosticism, where it signifies a spiritual knowledge or insight into humanity's real nature as divine, leading to the deliverance of the divine spark within humanity from the constraints of earthly existence.

Amaranth is Emanationism

The Tower touches all the mantles of Heaven, brother-noviates, and by its apex one can be as he will. More: be as he was and yet changed for all else on that path for those that walk after. This is the third key of Nu-mantia and the secret of how mortals become makers, and makers back to mortals.

Emanationism is an idea in the cosmology or cosmogony of certain religious or philosophical systems. Emanation, from the Latin emanare meaning "to flow from" or "to pour forth or out of", is the mode by which all things are derived from the first reality, or principle. All things are derived from the first reality or perfect God by steps of degradation to lesser degrees of the first reality or God, and at every step the emanating beings are less pure, less perfect, less divine. Emanationism is a transcendent principle from which everything is derived, and is opposed to both creationism (wherein the universe is created by a sentient God who is separate from creation) and materialism (which posits no underlying subjective and/or ontological nature behind phenomena being immanent).

Lorkhan is the Demiurge

Lorkhan, the Missing God, is the Creator-Trickster-Tester deity present in every Tamrielic mythic tradition. He is known as the Spirit of Nirn, the god of all mortals. Names for versions or aspects of Lorkhan include Lorkhaj (the Moon Beast) in Elsweyr, Lorkh, the Spirit of Man, the Mortal Spirit, or the Sower of Flesh to the Reachmen, Sep in Hammerfell, Sheor in High Rock, Shor in Skyrim, and Shezarr in Cyrodiil. He convinced or contrived the Original Spirits (et'Ada) to bring about the creation of the Mundus, upsetting the status quo—much like his (figurative) father Padomay is usually credited for introducing instability, and hence possibility for creation, into the undivided universe (or the Beginning Place).

In the Platonic, Neopythagorean, Middle Platonic, and Neoplatonic schools of philosophy, the demiurge is an artisan-like figure responsible for fashioning and maintaining the physical universe. The Gnostics adopted the term demiurge. Although a fashioner, the demiurge is not necessarily the same as the creator figure in the monotheistic sense, because the demiurge itself and the material from which the demiurge fashions the universe are both considered consequences of something else. Depending on the system, they may be considered either uncreated and eternal or the product of some other entity.

The word demiurge is an English word derived from demiurgus, a Latinised form of the Greek δημιουργός or dēmiurgós. It was originally a common noun meaning "craftsman" or "artisan", but gradually came to mean "producer", and eventually "creator". The philosophical usage and the proper noun derive from Plato's Timaeus, written c. 360 BC, where the demiurge is presented as the creator of the universe. The demiurge is also described as a creator in the Platonic (c. 310–90 BC) and Middle Platonic (c. 90 BC – AD 300) philosophical traditions. In the various branches of the Neoplatonic school (third century onwards), the demiurge is the fashioner of the real, perceptible world after the model of the Ideas, but (in most Neoplatonic systems) is still not itself "the One". In the arch-dualist ideology of the various Gnostic systems, the material universe is evil, while the non-material world is good. According to some strains of Gnosticism, the demiurge is malevolent, as it is linked to the material world. In others, including the teaching of Valentinus, the demiurge is simply ignorant or misguided.

I think that by seeing these concepts side by side it will help make sense of it all. You can definitely research this further, and argue that specific parts of the lore are more directly related to other concepts, but from my limited understanding of theology/philosophy, this is a framework for understanding what the lore was based on, and the ideas that might otherwise go unconnected. If you can do better than me here, by all means, be better than me.

But this takes us to the secret question within all of this: How does this effect the setting? The answer to that is that it really doesn't. Knowing that the setting of The Elder Scrolls is the material world created by the Demiurge, separating its inhabitants from the Godhead, doesn't really change anything. After all, you can literally say the exact same thing about our world. The presence of these concepts in The Elder Scrolls setting should change how you appreciate it in roughly the same way that this school of thought existing in our own world changes your view on our setting.

You’ve waited long enough to see Alex and Caleb again, haven’t you? The worlds of Aurora Rhapsody and Asterion Noir will collide in CONTINUUM (Riven Worlds Book One) on JANUARY 8, 2020.

Humanity has seized its destiny among the stars. But space remains vast and untamed, and nothing has prepared us to face the dangers rising from the deep shadows of the void.

Fourteen years after The Displacement flung humanity into a universe teeming with alien life, a tenuous alliance has taken root among humans, Anadens, and numerous other species. The wounds of war and revolution have begun to heal, peace and prosperity are within reach, and the architects of The Displacement, Alex Solovy and Caleb Marano, are enjoying an idyllic existence on the living planet of Akeso.

But growing troubles fester beneath the surface of this alliance. An upstart species offers allegiance with one hand but readies weapons of mass destruction with the other, while the Anadens, leaderless and adrift for years, increasingly refuse to play by humanity’s rules.

Top 10 Favorite Albums of 2018

It's time to present you guys with my top 10 favorite albums of 2018. There were a lot of amazing albums this year, but these 10 stole my heart. If you want to see my top 5 favorite EP's of the year, you can check out that post here. And just like on that post, we're going to see the honorable mentions first before we dive into the top 10. Let me explain my ranking system before we dive into this first though. If a release is followed by **, that means that I really enjoyed the album, but it wasn't enough to make it to the top 10. Now if a release is followed by ***, that means it had the potential of being on the top 10 and was an amazing release. One last thing before we get into this: I am a metalhead, so majority of the albums are metal albums (which I have the genres listed next to each release so you'll get to see that first hand). Now for my absolute favorite releases of the year!

10. Phantom Elite - Wasteland (symphonic metal)

If you enjoyed Marina La Torraca in Exit Eden, then you'll be able to get a different feel for her voice on this album. This is her main project outside of Exit Eden and their sound is so cool. The mixing could've been a bit better, but that doesn't bother me too much. In fact it gives it some extra character. I'm really excited to hear what these guys come up with next. This album really took me by surprise to just how good it turned out to be and how dramatic it got at times.

9. My Indigo - My Indigo (indie pop)

When I found out that Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation) was going to be releasing a solo album, I was really curious about what kind of sound she'd go for. I couldn't have imagined a better sound for her. Not a single dud on this album. It's so lovely and a breath of fresh air for her. You get a really great feel for her vocal range and there's some pretty cool vocal lines on here. Definitely a beautiful and touching album from start to finish.

8. Marmozets - Knowing What You Know Now (alternative rock)

I don't remember ever subscribing to their YouTube channel, but I'm so glad I did, because I found one of my top 10 favorite albums of the year because of it. Their sound is so in your face and on the verge of being alternative metal, but it's toned down enough to not be at that level. It definitely works for them. The music is so fun and absolutely wonderful to just jam out to. One of the most random discoveries I've made that I absolutely adore.

7. Dream Ocean - Lost Love Symphony (symphonic metal)

I learned about these guys through a Facebook friend at the beginning of the year and wound up really enjoying them. This album is pure symphonic metal. It's got drama, power, energy, strong riffs, amazing orchestrations, and a mezzo-soprano with a gorgeous voice. I find it kind of funny that Mark Jansen is featured on a track called Never Enough knowing full well that Epica have a song of the same name. I'm definitely am gonna be keeping my eye on these guys.

6. The Hardkiss - Залізна ластівка (progressive pop/rock)

These guys are evolving so much. This album is definitely a lot more on the rock side, but it still has a bit of that pop element. I'm waiting for them to take the plunge and release a full blown metal album. I think this album is a good first step in that direction. The production gives this album a bit of a sci-fi feel to it that I really like. It's so different compared to their previous releases and really stands out. I also really like how majority of the songs are in Ukrainian. It's always been the other way around for them, so it's a nice change.

5. Silent Stream of Godless Elegy - Smutnice (folk doom metal)

I really started taking a liking to these guys in the later part of last year after falling madly in love with their song Mokoš, so I knew I had to check out the new album when it dropped. This album turned out to be a lot more pretty than what I was expecting it to be. It's so beautiful and powerful. Every song has its own dynamic to it and not one song sounds similar to the other. And I just adore the folk instruments they use. It really adds to the beauty of the album.

4. Witchcraft - Cinema (progressive gothic metal)

It was so hard to rank this one at number 4, because it's neck and neck with my number 3 pick. This album turned out to be so much better than I had anticipated it being. It's beautiful, raw, and very unique. I love the samplings to other iconic songs on a few tracks (Requiem for a Dream and the themes for Silent Hill and The X Files are the ones I easily picked out). Their sound has evolved so much over the years and I feel as if this is the best of their releases. It shows off everything that is absolutely amazing about this band.

3. Oceans of Slumber - The Banished Heart (progressive doom metal)

Winter was a wonderful album, but holy shit did they outdo themselves with this album. It's a lot darker, a whole lot darker. Cammie's voice also sounds a lot better on this album. I don't know what it is, but seems as if her voice is a lot stronger and has more emotion attached to it on these songs. There also just seems to be a lot more emotion in these songs in general. It's such a stunning album from start to finish. If you wanted Winter to be more doomy and intense, The Banished Heart definitely lives up to that want.

2. Elvellon - Until Dawn (symphonic metal)

It shouldn't come as any surprise that this album is high up on my list. This was my favorite album of the year for the longest. It's such an amazing symphonic metal album that was definitely worth the wait (in terms of it being released, not in the shipping issues that I ran into with receiving it). These guys are definitely ones to look out for in the symphonic metal scene. Nele's voice just stands out so much compared to the many ladies in the scene. The stories told in each song are absolutely wonderful and the production is everything.

1. Once - After Earth (symphonic metal)

This is the album that took Until Dawn's place of being my favorite release of the year. I honestly wasn't expecting to love this album as much as I do. This album is so powerful, dramatic, beautiful. It even has a whimsical vibe to it that I absolutely adore. The writing, production, and execution are everything with this album. You get a beautiful feel for Alina's voice on this album and just how talented she is. The orchestrations are turned up a bit high on this album, but it doesn't take away from the experience, but instead compliments it so well. This album is just perfection and I can't wait to see what these guys have in store for us.

Like I mentioned earlier, there were a lot of amazing releases this year. I can't wait to see what next year has in store for us. I just know it's gonna be a wild one. I was hoping that getting closer to the end of the year that the new releases would slow down a bit but this was another busy weekend with more than a few incredible releases. Complete pain in the ass for those of us still struggling with putting together our best of 2021 lists. Ahhhhh first world problems…I will try my hardest to soldier on. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it….:)

This was quite the week for Death and Thrash Metal. No fear however as black metal was still very well represented. Diablation out of (shocker!) France released a great album “Allegeance”. Melodic Black Metal with a lot of atmospheric elements and a lot of variety in the song writing. Next up is Darkest Mind and their absolute stunning album “Oracle of Death”. Just when you thought your best of the year list was safe comes this record to ruin your plans. Melodic Black Metal with riffs for days and absolutely perfect production. I WANT THIS ON VINYL! Hopefully at some point it gets a vinyl release. Finally Conjuring and Citadel rounded out the Black Metal highlights. I don’t think either is as good Darkest Mind but they aren’t far off either. Now to the Death and Thrash Metal of the week. “The Sick is Dead” by Maladie started it off with great album of Progressive Death Metal. An album that gets better each time you hear it. This was followed by Soul Remnants and “Raising the Sacrificial Dagger”. This album just punches you in the face from track one and doesn’t let up for 11 tracks and the killer guitar work adds that extra dimension. The weekend ended with two back to back bad ass thrash albums. Death Decline came out firing with their aggressive full throttle style of thrash on their album “The Silent Path”. Impressed me so much I preordered the vinyl edition right away even though it’s not due out until the end of March. Finally we had hands down the best band name of the weekend with Chain Tombstone & The Dead Men. That name is the band name equivalent of the opening to the song The Book of Heavy Metal by Dream Evil…:). A great name is only part of the equation here with some razor sharp riffs and just overall catchy breakdown sections of their album “Realm of Pain”. It’s that really fun style of thrash metal that doesn’t take itself to seriously. As always…
