House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 1 Thoughts
Just clarifying, these are my own thoughts, you don't like them, don't bother telling me so. Also, I'm not a book purist, I like adaptions taking putting their own spin on things - if it makes sense to do so. So, here were my thoughts. Obvs, this post is dark and full of spoilers.
I loved the opening, the whole callback to the White Walkers which cements the true arc of ASOIAF (and feels a fuck you to s8)
THEY CALLED VHAGAR THAT HOARY OLD BITCH, ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BOOK QUOTES
Rhaenys ate, she fucking ate, that's it girl you remind Daemon of your daughter and his place (you know that Daemon loved that shit)
And Daemon? The whole mother vs the Queen speech? What do you think YOUR mother would have done? Alyssa Targaryen would have done exactly the same if it were you torn apart and you goddamn know it.
Yes, Corlys mourning Luke. Everyone mourning Luke 😭😭😭
Alyn of Hull, slay.
Am I the only one who kinda thinks that the Hightower Sigil looks a little clip-arty? It's just not it 😬
I really wish they made the scorpions look better. I just always thought that the weapons would be more advanced because they actually know dragons.
Aegon and Helaena, you can sort of see that Aegon does care about her but he just doesn't know what to do with her.
Alicent ALICENT WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. GET THAT MAN AWAY FROM THERE
Also Criston? Giving head? Yeah, I'd think the sharks are real before I believed that.
Where was the build up to... That?
I actually fucking shuddered. SHUDDERED.
Tyland don't fucking annoy that little boy.
Terms? You killed her little boy and you sent terms?
Yes, Aegon you humiliate that Lannister bitch.
Why is Jaehaerys so sweet? 😭😭😭😭
Dalton Greyjoy mention!!
Mine are Bigger - Actual Aegon II energy
Why is Aemond sitting there like 🥺🥺🥺? You fucked up my guy.
Emma is heartbreaking.
Syrax never grew? Why she so tiny?
Arrax was so beautiful.
The actual stab of grief I got watching Rhaenyra on the beach. That was her baby. That was her little boy.
Aegon the Magnamious?
Aegon being nice on the throne? Being kind to the shepherd?
Your goats? No, sheep even better. 🙂 Aegon, I am meant to hate you.
Otto get fucked, Aegon was doing his best.
Hugh? Hugh Hammer? Girl, get the fuck out of here, asking for money and shit.
I can see a lot of ppl going to whine about them humanising Aegon but it's necessary? Complex characters and our relationships with them is GRRM's greatest skill.
Larys get away from that boy.
This is a green heavy episode. I know why but still, give us some Joffrey maybe? Some House Baratheon shitting themselves? The Great Houses getting the news and going oh fuck?
Daemon is lowkey right, Mysaria did help place Aegon on the throne but she is also right, he's only that angry with her because nobody else around.
Matt's acting is top tier because you can really see the grief, the anger and the insecurity when he's snarking.
Rhaenyra's return. Her silence, it's fucking gold.
Jace and Rhaenyra 😭😭😭😭 His lil voice. 😭😭😭
Where was Jeyne Arryn? Why no Jeyne??
The funeral 😭 lil Joffrey is too lil. Jace holding him *raptor screams*
Alicent, the fit ate but what good are prayers? Go smack that son of yours.
Somebody hug Rhaenyra. Right now. Rhaenys? Elinda? Baela? Rhaena? Hold that woman.
The CRIME HOODIE is back.
I still hate the gold cloaks' cloaks. They look like piss rags. Does nobody on the staff know what gold is? Look at Sunfyre.
The actual book quotes 🙂🙂🙂🙂
The War of Quills and Ravens, yes, yes
Aemond don't sit with Ser Incelot, he hast done thy mother
Y'know what, Aemond is a lil right, he's getting the blame for starting the war but Alicent and Otto literally laid the foundations?
Why is Criston standing for Otto? He's not a member of the royal family.
Aemond, sitting in that chair is very Daemon of you
Otto, showing off his slutty lil wrist, your pour yourself a lil drinky girl
Blood and Cheese have a lil dog with them. Please don't let anything happen to the dog.
There's something always so eerie about all those tunnels under the Red Keep. It absolutely terrifies me.
Aegon and his buddies sitting on the throne gives off fuck boi vibes and the Strong joke was actually pretty funny.
That Viserys statue is not it.
Why is Blood so fucking massive?
Cheese, did you just fucking kick that dog? I will kill what you love you absolutely bastard.
Oh, those locks. The world building, oh the worldBuilding
The atmosphere is very well captured. The music is on point.
I love the detailing of the interiors of the Red Keep, it's so much better than the OG series.
Oh Helaena.
Helaena, my love. Why Helaena, why her.
Why didn't they just check themselves?
How the fuck did the writers make Blood and Cheese that lack lustre? How the actual fuck do you fumble that?
Alicent, my fucking eyes, MY FUCKING EYES
I'm giving this a 7.5/10. Everyone else was great but HOW DO YOU FUCK UP BLOOD AND CHEESE? HOW? HOW? I DEMAND A TRIAL BY COMBAT
Also I must say, the Biblically accurate Hand of the King chain in the trailer is very good.

''I fear what I have begun.''-Rhaenyra Targaryen, House of the Dragon
''Good! To war, then!''-Aegon Targaryen, House of the Dragon
....
......
i wish I could end it here, it would be such a cool read, me thinks.
Sadly, there is one last quote.
''Only weeks ago, my lord husband was alive, and the realm was at peace. On his death bed, he knew that the realm would never accept a Queen. Rhaenyra's supporters will believe what they wish, but Viserys wanted Aegon to succeed him.''-Alicent Hightower, House of the Dragon
-----
Like, i wanted to end with the ''good to war'' and ''i fear what ive begun'' but thats not in the stars, alas. I should say, I happen to collect a lot of quotes from books/movies/series so thats why it keeps saying ''from house of the dragon'' a dozen times over, xD.

“Ned Stark may have been naïve, but there was a clear-cut morality to his initial search for truth that’s less applicable to Rhaenyra, a flagrant philanderer — just like Ned’s adversary Cersei Lannister!”
They’re really acting as if Ned wasn’t best friend with Robert Baratheon, A NOTORIOUS AND SERIAL PHILANDERER AND CHEATER WHO FATHERED 8451973 BASTARDS.
Aegon II is a literal rapist who sired multiple bastards and at least one was left abandoned to be raised in a fighting pit where adults gamble on children who’ve had their teeth and nails filed to put on a “better show”. Even worse, Aegon is a frequent patron of the fighting pit and his bastards are unwilling participants.
The entire fandom really said, “sexual autonomy but ONLY for men.”
Anon refers to an article la-pheacienne posted and criticized HERE.
🔗And this is the actual Variety article, titled ""‘House of the Dragon’ Hits Its Stride in a Bigger, Bleaker Season 2: TV Review"
Excerpt:
The point is bluntly put, and only reinforced by grim spectacles seemingly designed to refute the apocryphal Truffaut quote that there’s no such thing as an anti-war film. (Or TV show with the budget of a box-office tentpole.) A dispute between two squabbling teens cuts directly to a battlefield strewn with corpses; a humble family in a blockaded city worries over the spiking price of food. These exchanges take place not between our primary antiheroes, but minor, even anonymous, characters we may never hear from again. Cumulatively, they stand in for the masses who stand to gain nothing from two sides armed with the magical equivalent of nuclear bombs engaged in mutually assured annihilation.
Yes, it's disgusting to see.

Dance of the Dragons - seeds of the story: mentions of the Dance in the 5 main A Song of Ice and Fire books (1996-2011)
before the publication of The Princess and the Queen (2013), The Rogue Prince, The World of Ice & Fire (2014) and Fire & Blood (2018)
Let's get really nerdy and see how GRRM, with his "gardening" style of writing, gradually came up with the story that is currenly being adapted as House of the Dragon!
The Dance is first mentioned in the first book in the series, A Game of Thrones (1996), as a Targaryen brother-sister civil war, and the subject of songs that are popular in Westeros.
You will probably never guess who were the first characters from this story to be mentioned in the text of the main series...
(the screenshot quotes contain spoilers for the fates of some of the HotD characters)
The first Dance characters to be mentioned are the twin brothers Erryk and Arryk Cargyll, in an early Bran chapter. (spoiler!)
The Dance as the subject of songs is also mentioned in an Arya chapter:
AGOT also has a chronology of Targaryen kings at the end of the book, but there are some big differences from where GRRM would later take the story:: Rhaenyra is only 1 year older than Aegon, and Viserys II is her grandson rather than son.
ETA: next (thanks for this additional info that I missed, @nobodysuspectsthebutterfly ):
The Hedge Knight (1998), the first of the Dunk & Egg novellas, reveals Rhaenyra's ultimate fate (spoiler! which was also spoiled in season 3 of GoT), and also describes the death of the last dragon:
A Clash of Kings (1998): In a Tyrion chapter, Sansa mentions the fate of Erryk and Arryk again (spoilers again), which seems to be the most popular part of the Dance for the singers.
A Storm of Swords (2000):
Davos chapter: Stannis calls Rhaenyra a usurper, which is highly ironic considering he is on Dragonstone and preparing to keep fighting for his throne that has been usurped... but that may not have been the intention, since this was probably written before GRRM had worked out the details of the succession crisis. In retrospect, we can ascribe that to the fact that Rhaenyra was described as a usurper by the Westerosi historians and Aegon II listed as the true king, and that Stannis goes by what official history is saying.
We also get the first mention of Otto Hightower, described as one of the bad/failed Hands of the King, but there's no indication here that he was in any way involved with the Dance (and there won't be until The Princess and the Queen).
Ryam Redwyne - another, but very minor character from HotD, is also mentioned as one of the Hands, after being mentioned early in AGOT as a Kinsguard (in the show he was just the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and not also the Hand), but he dies before the Dance in both book and show and plays no real role in the events leading up to it.
Also in ASOS - another mention of Dance of the Dragons - the popular song, one of those sung at Joffrey's wedding to Margaery (Tyrion's chapter).
Finally, also in ASOS, Jaime thinks about how the Kingsguard was divided during the Dance:
A Feast for Crows (2005): At this point, GRRM had come up with Criston Cole, and there's a bunch of references to him, and the first mention of Viserys choosing Rhaenyra as heir.
But first, another mention of Dance of the Dragons, the song, in a Sansa chapter:
First mention of Criston Cole is, fittingly, in the Arys Oakheart chapter. Arianne is the one to bring him up. She also mentions that Viserys wanted Rhaenyra to succeed him.
(If Stannis' mention of Rhaenyra is ironic, there are multiple levels of irony in Arianne identifying with Rhaenyra! She condemns a female heir being usurped by her brother, while she is herself trying to organize a usurpation in the other direction - and Arys is not smart enough to point out that 1) Viserys wanted Rhaenyra to succeed him and she fought for her throne; but no one has named Myrcella heir and she's just a pawn and hasn't expressed any wish to do that? And Arianne is really doing all of that because she fears that her father does not want her to succeed him, the opposite of Viserys. Dorne has absolute primogeniture while the rest of Westeros has male preference primogeniture, and Viserys never changed that, he just picked his heir... Arianne believes is that her father will ignore the customary rules of succession and instead choose the child he prefers to be his heir. Girl, you may be comparing yourself to Rhaenyra, but in that scenario in your head, you'd be Aegon.)
The second mention of Criston Cole is, of course, in a Jaime chapter. GRRM really using him for the knight/Kingsguard theme. It seems his role in the Dance was conceived as bigger than what GRRM finally wrote (let alone bigger than on HotD), since he still hadn't conceived Otto's and Alicent's role in the events.
And also in AFFC, an obligatory mention of Erryk and Arryk (spoiler), in a Cersei chapter. She may be thinking of them in the context of Loras and Bronn, but it's very fitting that she's thinking about siblings fighting each other while she's obsessing over her brother Tyrion (with whom she has a lot more in common than either would ever like to admit) as her biggest enemy, in her head at least.
A Dance with Dragons (2011):
Even though the title is a reference to the civil war, there were just two mentions of it I could find. However, they introduce some new details and reference some other characters.
Tyrion (at this point an infamous Kinslayer!), staying in Pentos in Illyrio's mention, debates a very minor detail from the Dance with Illyrio's Haefmaester Haldon, concerning a bold but very dumb knight called Byron Swann. First mention of Aemond, as well as of Rhaenyra's dragon Syrax, and the fact that Aemond rode Vhagar (who had been mentioned a lot already as a Conquest dragon, but this is the first time we learn she participated in the Dance, and also the first time she's confirmed to be female).
It's interesting that we see here that Tyrion is reading his histories paying attention to the details, questioning them, and noticing when they aren't making sense. Just the way that Martin's "historical" accounts by Maester Gyldayn and Maester Yandel are meant ot be read. For comparison, this is the account of the event and the multiple versions of what happened, from Fire & Blood:
Back to ADWD, the second mention of the Dance is in a Dany chapter. She is thinking to herself about the monstrosity and danger of dragons (prompted by a certain event with Drogon) and thinks in that context about Rhaenyra's fate, previously revealed in The Hedge Knight and now mentioned for the first time in the main series (spoiler again!):
And that's all as far as mentions I was able to find. The Dunk and Egg novellas, if I haven't missed anything, don't have any references to the Dance. Maybe there still wasn't enough time passed for the Dance to become just a subject of songs, but at the same time, it was not contemporary enough, and everyone is instead far too busy with the Blackfyre rebellions.
TL:DR:
Characters from the Dance mentioned in ASOAIF: Erryk and Arryk, Vhagar (but only as a Conquest dragon and with no mention of her participation in the Dance), Aegon II, Rhaenyra, Aegon III in the Targaryen line rather than the main text (AGOT), Otto Hightower (but with no mention of his role in the Dance) in ASOS, Criston Cole (AFFC), Aemond, Syrax, Byron Swann; Aegon II's dragon Sunfyre is referenced but not named. Vhagar's involvement is confirmed in ADWD.
Some pretty big differences: there was no mention at all that Rhaenyra and Aegon were half-siblings - which would only be revealed in The Princess and the Queen, where we first learn that Alicent Hightower was Aegon's mother. (ETA: outside of the text, GRRM first mentioned this in 2006, so after the publication of AFFC, and while he was still working on ADWD, so he would've come up with this at some point while working on ADWD, and before ADWD was published.) Rhaenyra was also said to be 1 year older than Aegon, but tPatQ makes her 10 year older (and the show aged down Alicent and her kids and made the age difference between the half-siblings even bigger). Viserys II was supposed to be Aegon III's son rather than Rhaenyra's.
I think this is how GRRM probably came up with the story of the Dance, with his "gardening" style of writing:
1) came up with the idea of two twin brothers with incredibly similar names fighting each other on the opposite sides of a civil war, as one of the tragic tales songs are made about;
2) decided the war would be a fantasy version of the Anarchy - the 12th century English civil war (just like War of the 5 Kings waa inspired by the Wars of the Roses) between cousins Mathilda and Stephen, only bloodier, with dragons, and make them Targaryen brother and sister. He came up with the poetic name "Dance of the Dragons". The only characters aside from Erryk & Arryk thought up at this point are Rhaenyra, Aegon II (full siblings, she a year older) and Aegon III. Aegon III is already "Dragonbane", dragons said to have died off in his reign. Viserys II is Aegon III's son at this point, before GRRM realised that he's bad at math and had messed up the timeline and that this was impossible, and that Viserys had to be older and Aegon III's brother.
2a) At some point while working on the original trulogy (which may or may not have been after the publication of AGOT, as it was first revealed in 1998 in The Hedge Knight) he also comes up with Rhaenyra's death as a way to explain Aegon III's hate of dragons.
3) Writing AFFC and ADWD, he invents more details to be mentioned in the main series as thematically relevant. He creates Criston Cole, "Kingmaker" (nickname inspired by Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick's nickname, even though he has virtually no other similarity to Cole), credited as the guy behind thd war, described as a controversial Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and an angry ex-lover of Rhaenyra. Cole gets mentioned in Jaime's and Arys' chapters as a thematic link with the theme of Kingsguard knights and their honor. The Dance gets mentioned by Arianne - for the themes of succession crisis, female heirs, father/daughter relationship (first memtion that Viserys wanted Rhaenyra to succeed him.
4) Writing ADWD, GRRM is planning a second Targaryen civil war between Dany and Young Griff, so he gives the novel a title accordingly, but in the end he just sets it up for the next book. The title still stays, but becomes more about literal dragons. He comes up with more details, which are about the literal dragons who participated in the Dance, including an incident of dragon vs human, to include in a story about how dangerous dragons can be. .
4a) Vhagaris first confirmed to have participated in the Dance, and Aemond is mentioned for the first time ever, as her rider and Aegon II's brother who fought on his side, because GRRM, per his usual MO, wouldn't want the oldesrt and largest dragon to be ridden by either of the rival monarchs, and he has a thing about second sons. He already had two pairs of Targaryen brothers called Aegon & Aemon (Aegon IV & Dragonknight, Maester Aemon & Egg) but he tweaks the name a little.
5) GRRM probably goes on to write a bunch of other stuff from Targaryen history and Dance, especially to tie it up with the upcoming Targaryen civil war in TWOW. It goes faster than the main plot of TWOW, so it gets turned into a novella, and other supplementary material.
He finally comes up with the idea that Rhaenyra and Aegon II were half-siblings with a big age difference, and needs Aegon's mother to be from a powerful Westerosi family and her father a Hand of the King. Probably gets reminded that he mentioned Otto Hightower in ASOS, as one of the bad Hands, decides "I can make him Aegon's grandfather."
The character of Alicent Hightower is created, and the story completely reframed as a conflict between two women, as seen in the novella title "The Princess and the Queen, or the Blacks and the Greens".
At the same time, he creates Daemon, anti-hero "rogue prince" uncle-husband to Rhaenyra. The only historical Daemon mentioned in ASOIAF before was Daemon Blsckfyre. GRRM says "what if he was named after this guy?" He gets so into the character he writes a prequel novella about him, too.
And a bunch of other details get worked out in the two novellas, then in The World of Ice and Fire, and then even more added and expanded in Fire & Blood.

AGOT - Prologue
Just warning everyone now, the main thing I’m focusing on in this chapter is the many Waymar Royce-Jon Snow parallels to be found, and literally nothing else. The Others who? This will probably be a running theme with these posts, because most of the magic in this series is so far incomprehensible to me.
“There are things to be learned even from the dead.”
Well, hello. Jon had the exact same idea. Only on the first page and we already have our first Jon parallel. Can’t wait for it to be joined by many more. In fact, I’ll be keeping a running tally.
Jon parallels: 1
****
“We have a long ride before us,” Gared pointed out. “Eight days, maybe nine. And night is falling.”
Ser Waymar glanced at the sky with disinterest. “It does that every day about this time. Are you unmanned by the dark, Gared?”
OK maybe this is cheating, but I’m counting this quote too. Come on, you can’t tell me that isn’t exactly the sort of smart-ass reply Jon would come up with. Waymar in general is very sassy, and I could see Jon saying a lot of the things he does in this chapter. He’s a bit of an asshole, but hey, Jon can be too at times.
Jon parallels: 2
****
The next part is all in one paragraph, the highest concentration of direct parallels I’ve found in the chapter, including the strongest ones that really make it hard to deny that Waymar is mostly a Jon Snow reference.
Ser Waymar Royce was the youngest son of an ancient house with too many heirs.
This reminds me of Maester Aemon saying that his grandfather, King Daeron II, sent him to the Citadel because “too many dragons are as dangerous as too few”. An “ancient house with too many heirs” perfectly describes House Targaryen in the coming books, even though right now it seems decimated. Aegon and Dany both consider themselves the true heir, and neither are going to be willing to give that up in favour of the other. Whether or not Jon has a claim too is still to be seen, but there are already too many heirs either way. And while Dany is actually the youngest in the family overall, Jon is the youngest son.
Jon parallels: 3
He was a handsome youth of eighteen, grey-eyed and graceful and slender as a knife.
Duh.
Jon parallels: 4
It might be worth noting that Jon will likely be eighteen by the time of ADOS, depending on how much time passes during TWOW. The first five books only span about two years, but everything is likely to move much slower during winter, if only because travel will take longer, especially in the North. Personally, I think TWOW will take place over a year - there’s a lot of ground that the book needs to cover, namely the Starks retaking the North, Aegon rising to the Iron Throne, Dany dealing with the Dothraki and returning to Meereen to deal with the Yunkai’i… she’s the main problem honestly, because if she doesn’t at least set out for Westeros by the end of the book, ADOS is going to have to be very weirdly paced.
Mounted on his huge black destrier, the knight towered above Will and Gared on their smaller garrons.
This reminds me of the horse that Jon chooses to ride on the day that he lets the wildlings pass through the Wall, a “fiery grey courser with a mane as black and shiny as maester’s ink”. It’s not the exact same type of horse, but they have similar colouring, destriers and coursers are both warhorses, and Waymar’s destrier is likely a stallion like Jon’s courser is. Jon chose his mount that day because he needed to look impressive, and Waymar is arrogant enough that he probably chose his horse just because he wanted to look impressive in general.
Jon parallels: 5
****
His cloak was his crowning glory; sable, thick and black and soft as sin.
I’m not sure if Jon’s cloaks have properly been described in his chapters, apart from them being black. But this quote actually reminds me of season 6, and the cloak Sansa made for Jon. She made it specifically to be reminiscent of their father’s, and thus it looked a lot like Robb’s cloak as King in the North too - a cloak that basically screamed that Jon was a Stark. Jon didn’t wear a crown, so it was the cloak that really signified his kingship. His cloak as his crowning glory. Sansa making him a Stark, Sansa making him a king.
Which is to say, I really hope we get something similar to that cloak scene in TWOW. I don’t know how GRRM could miss the opportunity though - the amount of marriage symbolism alone...! OK I’m gonna stop now, before this needs to go into its own post.
Jon parallels: still 5 for now, but I’m totally calling it, a Stark cloak will be very important in TWOW/ADOS
****
Nothing burns like the cold.
Not precisely a Jon parallel, but this bit of imagery introduces the idea of ice and fire not being total opposites. Not a dichotomy, but two sides of the same coin maybe.
****
Ser Waymar Royce came next, his great black destrier snorting impatiently. The warhorse was the wrong mount for ranging, but try and tell that to the lordling.
............
Let’s skip ahead a few books for a moment, to that mention of Jon’s horse in ADWD, Jon XII…
Satin had his horse saddled and bridled and waiting for him, a fiery grey courser with a mane as black and shiny as maester's ink. He was not the sort of mount that Jon would have chosen for a ranging, but on this morning all that mattered was that he look impressive, and for that the stallion was a perfect choice.
Does this really matter? No. Does this make me incredibly smug for noticing it nevertheless? Hell yeah it does.
Jon parallels: 6, this totally counts as another one ok shhhh
****
Ser Waymar’s mouth became a hard line. “No fire.”
Admittedly this one is a bit of a stretch, but I can just feel the parallels lurking…. Jon’s dislike of fire as a method of death? Him rejecting the fire part of his heritage in favour of the Stark’s ice?
Jon parallels: 6 still, but in my heart this counts
****
Ser Waymar met him bravely. “Dance with me then.” He lifted his sword high over his head, defiant. His hands trembled from the weight of it, or perhaps from the cold. Yet in that moment, Will thought, he was a boy no longer, but a man of the Night’s Watch.
You will dance with me anon! Also the first appearance of the recurring imagery of dancing as fighting, something very close to my heart (see: all my metas about the DoD 2.0).
Jon parallels: 7
The second part of that quote is directly applied to Jon in ACOK, when Qhorin decides to send him on the undercover mission with the wildlings.
“Jon has a different part to play.”
“He is half a boy still.”
“No,” said Qhorin, “he is a man of the Night’s Watch.”
(ACOK, Jon VIII)
Jon parallels: 8
****
Blood welled between the rings. It steamed in the cold, and the droplets seemed red as fire where they touched the snow. Ser Waymar’s fingers brushed his side. His moleskin glove came away soaked with red.
When Jon is assassinated at the end of ADWD, his wounds also steam in the cold. Like Waymar, Jon also brushes his fingers against his wound and comes away with blood.
Jon parallels: 9
The part about droplets “red as fire” seems very much like a parentage hint - fiery blood (Fire and Blood) mingling with Snow. It could point to Jon’s resurrection too, if it happens similarly to the show - blood magic and fire magic both being used to bring him back?
Jon parallels: 10
****
Royce’s body lay facedown in the snow, one arm out-flung. The thick sable cloak had been slashed in a dozen places. Lying dead like that, you saw how young he was. A boy.
😭
Jon is only seventeen when he dies. Throughout ADWD he’s tried to kill the boy and become the man, but ultimately he fails when he chooses to try to save Arya - the family of the boy who lived at Winterfell, not the man of the Night’s Watch. His youth is going to be very evident to whoever sees his body after the mutiny, despite all his attempts to seem like hardened Lord Commander Snow.
Jon parallels: 11
****
final thoughts:
I’m sure there are many more parallels that I’ve missed, but 11 isn’t bad! Re-reading this chapter, I’ve become bizarrely fond of Waymar?? Probably because I keep associating him with my darling Jon. He’s an arrogant little lordling who dies bravely in the end, as the warrior he was playing at being, and I love him for it.
Most of these direct links only became evident with ADWD, so there might be even more connections to be found in future books. Waymar losing an eye isn’t a parallel yet.
Also, after this prologue, Waymar is only ever mentioned in reference to his disappearance, mostly in Jon’s POVs, once in Bran’s. The one other time he’s mentioned is in a Sansa chapter - AFFC, Alayne I, in which she muses that she fell wildly in love with Ser Waymar when he visited Winterfell.
I’m sure it’s just a coincidence.

Valyrian Translator
So what if you do actually want to learn Dothraki or Valyrian? Of course, the ideal scenario would be to have an actual language exchange with a Dothraki warrior or a nobleman from Essos for Valyrian. High Valyrian is the language of the old Valyrian Freehold which was located on the eastern continent of Essos. Much of Essos was once dominated by the Valyrians for thousands of years, stretching from the Free Cities in the west, to Slaver's Bay in the east. The Valyrians forced the peoples they subjugated to speak in (or at least be able to converse in) their language. After the Doom of.
From A Wiki of Ice and Fire
Jump to: navigation, search
High Valyrian is a language originating from Valyria and the Valyrian Freehold. Corrupted dialects known as bastard Valyrian are spoken in the Free Cities(1) and Slaver's Bay.(2)
2High Valyrian
3Bastard Valyrian
History
Some of the oldest remaining ancient texts were written by Andals, Valyrians, Ghiscari, and Asshai'i.(3) After the Old Empire of Ghis was conquered by the Valyrian Freehold in the Ghiscari wars, the Ghiscari began speaking the High Valyrian of their conquerors.(4)
High Valyrian is no longer widely spoken due to the Doom of Valyria,(5) and most Valyrian records were destroyed in the catastrophe.(6) The tongues of the Free Cities have continued to evolve from the original High Valyrian.(5)
Queen Alysanne Targaryen is said to have begun learning how to read from Valyrian scrolls while still at the breast of her mother, Queen Alyssa Velaryon.(7) Alysanne's husband, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, was fascinated with the Old Valyrian scrolls in the library of Dragonstone.(8)
How to lead jo owen ebook reader. Racallio Ryndoon is said to have spoken a dozen dialects of Valyrian.(9) Lord Alyn Velaryon studied Valyrian treaties about warship design and sea tactics when he visited the Citadel.(9)Larra Rogare, the wife of Prince Viserys Targaryen, was fluent in High Valyrian and the dialects of Lys, Myr, Tyrosh, and Volantis.(10)
Some highborn children of Westeros are still taught Valyrian as a sign of their noble education.(11)(12) Songs(13) and scrolls(14)(15) are still sung and read in High Valyrian, although by 300 AC most Westerosi nobles cannot understand the language.(13)
High Valyrian
Language
The High Valyrian phrase valar morghulis(16) is translated as 'all men must die.'(17) A counterpart phrase, valar dohaeris,(18) is translated as 'all men must serve.'(19)
The word dracarys is translated as meaning 'dragonfire.'(20) Obsidian is called 'dragonglass' in the Common Tongue, but 'frozen fire' in High Valyrian.(21)Valonqar is the word for 'little brother.'(22) High Valyrian is the most likely source language for maegi (pronounced differently from 'Maggy'),(23) which means 'wise'.(24)
The Valyrian writing system, or at least a Valyrian writing system, is described as involving glyphs.(25) It was also probably standard practice to write on scrolls, and not in books.(26) The glyphs can also be inscribed, as on an old Valyrian dragon horn, which, when sounded, had 'every line and letter shimmering with white fire.'(27) Valyrian carvings have been found on obelisks.(28)
Valyrian steel is forged with spells, as well as hammers.(29) Some smiths still know them, although not entirely.(30)
Names
House Targaryen came from Valyria and thus most of its members can be considered to have High Valyrian names. These include:
Aegon

English To Valyrian Translator
Houses Baratheon, Celtigar, Qoherys, and Velaryon are of Valyrian descent, and thus these names are possibly Valyrian as well.(34)(35)
Velaryon first names include:
Aethan
Corlys
Daenaera
Jacaerys
Laena
Laenor
Lucerys
Monterys
Vaemond
Valaena
Jaenara Belaerys was a Valyrian explorer(36) and Aurion was a would-be emperor.(37)
The Valyrians most likely gave Valyrian names to their dragons, as the dragons Balerion, Meraxes, Vhagar, and Syrax were named after Valyrian gods and goddesses.(38)(39) However, not all dragons of House Targaryen had Valyrian names (e.g., Queen Alysanne Targaryen's dragon, Silverwing(31)).
Eight of the nine Free Cities were founded as colonies of the Valyrian Freehold, and are thus likely to bear Valyrian names as well:
Volantis's satellite towns of Selhorys, Valysar, and Volon Therys likely have Valyrian names as well. It is also probable that Elyria, Mantarys, Oros, Tolos, Tyria, and Velos are Valyrian in name, being cities close to Old Valyria.(40)
Bastard Valyrian
Free Cities
Bastard Valyrian includes the languages of the nine Free Cities.(1) Each of the cities has its own dialect, and each dialect likely has its own separate derived vocabulary. Syrio Forel of Braavos speaks the Common Tongue with a lilting accent.(41) One of the Brave Companions is described as having a thick Myrish accent.(42)
The Free Cities use glyphs to write Valyrian.(43) The Valyrian of the Free Cities is described as sounding 'liquid'.(44)
Slaver Cities
Valyrian Translations Season 4
The Old Empire of Ghis was conquered by the Valyrian Freehold five thousand years ago, and the Ghiscari have since spoken High Valyrian. The Slaver's Bay cities of Yunkai, Meereen, and Astapor have their own versions of bastard Valyrian, which have been influenced mainly by Old Ghiscari, the ancient language of Old Ghis. Like the Free Cities, the people of the Slaver Cities use glyphs to write Valyrian.(2)

Astapori Valyrian is described as having a 'characteristic growl,' influenced by Ghiscari.(2) The dialect of Yunkai is close enough to that of Astapor to be mutually intelligible.(45)
Valyrian Voice Translator
Yunkai used to be part of the Old Empire of Ghis, and has multiple languages spoken in the city. Mhysa, Maela, Aelalla, Qathei, and Tato are given as words for 'mother', but which tongue fits which word is unknown (excepting the first, which is Ghiscari).(45)
Some slavers speak a mongrel tongue,(46) a blend of Old Ghiscari and High Valyrian.(47)
Characters familiar with High Valyrian
Valyrian Translation
Gerris Drinkwater speaks a halting approximation of High Valyrian.(12)
Haldon Halfmaester(48)
Tyrion Lannister learned to read High Valyrian on his maester's knee.(11)
Quentyn Martell can read and write High Valyrian but has little practice speaking it.(12)

Ser Barristan Selmy has some High Valyrian, though not as much as Daenerys Targaryen.(2)
Arya Stark knows some High Valyrian(51) but the kindly man insists that she improve it.(52)
Catelyn Stark considers the speech of Moreo Tumitis of Tyrosh to be the vulgar Valyrian of the Free Cities.(53)
Sweets is fluent in High Valyrian(54)
Aegon Targaryen is fluent in High Valyrian.(12)
Daenerys Targaryen(2)
Samwell Tarly only has a little High Valyrian.(55)
The closest thing the Windblown have to a company tongue is classic High Valyrian.(56) Their leader, the Tattered Prince, says 'and now we ride' to his men in the language.(56)
Quotes
Each of the Free Cities has its own history and character, and each has come to have its own tongue. These are all corruptions of the original, pure form of High Valyrian, dialects that drift further from their origin with each new century since the Doom befell the Freehold.(5)Download counter strike condition zero full.
Behind the Scenes
According to George R. R. Martin,
Tolkien was a philologist, and an Oxford don, and could spend decades laboriously inventing Elvish in all its detail. I, alas, am only a hardworking SF and fantasy novel(sic), and I don't have his gift for languages. That is to say, I have not actually created a Valyrian language. The best I could do was try to sketch in each of the chief tongues of my imaginary world in broad strokes, and give them each their characteristic sounds and spellings.(57)
David J. Peterson further developed High Valyrian for the television adaptation Game of Thrones.

Hi :) I keep seeing that J and D will be parts of "dance of dragons 2.0" but what exactly is that and what their roles will be? Was it foreshadowed? I am really curious about it, but I can't find any meta bc the name is the same as the book. Thank you :)
The Dance of the Dragons was a civil war between the two oldest children of Viserys I, Rhaenyra from his first marriage and her half-brother Aegon II. Rhaenyra had been raised as the heir because she was Viserys I’s only child for a long time and after her mother’s death he officially named her his heir and had the lords of the realm do obeisance to her. However, he remarried and had children with his new queen. When Viserys I died, both Rhaenyra and her half-brother Aegon claimed the Crown. What followed was a war of succession that was incredibly bloody and destructive because both factions had dragons. The war ended with the death of Rhaenyra (she was eaten by her half-brother’s dragon) but the long-term consequences were severe for House Targaryen. Many members of the family had died and most of the dragons had died as well. The last dragon died during the reign of Rhaenyra’s son Aegon III. You can read about the Dance of the Dragons in the novella The Princess and the Queen and in the new book Fire and Blood.

GRRM was most likely inspired by real historical events for The Dance of the Dragons. During the mid 12th century a war of succession over the English throne was fought between Matilda, daughter of Henry I and his nephew Stephen of Blois. Matilda was her father’s recognized heir after the death of her older brother. It was a bloody war, commonly referred to as The Anarchy. It lasted for about 20 years and ended with Matilda’s son taking the English Crown as Henry II. So you can see that there are some remarkable similarities to GRRM’s Targaryen civil war.
The reason why fans talk about a Second Dance of Dragons is because it is something that GRRM himself has alluded to in an interview:
Q: Hi, short question. Will we find out more about the Dance of the Dragons in future books?
GRRM: The first dance or the second? The second will be the subject of a book. The first will be mentioned from time to time, I'm sure. (So Spake Martin)
A lot of fans believe that this second Dance will take place between Daenerys Targaryen and Varys’ puppet Young Griff, also referred to as fAegon, since he is very likely not who he thinks he is (Rhaegar’s son) and he is related to the vision Dany had of the Mummer’s Dragon in Qarth. Young Griff shows up in the fifth book, A Dance with Dragons (the title is similar but not the same as the name of the Targaryen civil war).
A released chapter from The Winds of Winter also hints more directly at a Second Dance of Dragons:
Dragons?” said her mother. “Teora, don’t be mad." "I’m not. They’re coming." "How could you possibly know that?” her sister asked, with a note of scorn in her voice. “One of your little dreams?" Teora gave a tiny nod, chin trembling. "They were dancing. In my dream. And everywhere the dragons danced the people died.” (TWoW, Arianne I)
This is from Arianne Martell’s POV and she is on her way to meet with fAegon to determine whether he’s the real deal or not. Because of the context of this quote one could argue that the Second Dance will be between Dany and fAegon. However, I think that this Second Dance of Dragon may very well also include Jon Snow after the parentage reveal.
I’ve written more in-depth about this elsewhere, so I’ll just quote myself:
Will this Second Dance of Dragons also include Jon? Will Jon and Daenerys clash when his true parentage is revealed? Jon doesn’t want the Iron Throne but Dany will probably be suspicious after her experiences with (f)Aegon. Then there’s the fact that the show appears to be foreshadowing a clash between Targaryens. The show has eliminated the storyline about fAegon but it has included a reference to The Dance of the Dragons.
In season 5, Shireen Baratheon reads about the first Dance of Dragons and then discusses that tragic piece of Westerosi history with her father Stannis Baratheon.
In season 2, Stannis entered into a small-scale Baratheon version of a similar conflict because his younger brother Renly made a bid for the Iron Throne. However, that conflict was resolved with Renly’s murder in season 2 so you have to wonder why a conflict of succession between family members is brought up several seasons later - unless it is to foreshadow a future conflict between Jon and Daenerys. This interpretation is supported by the fact that the show tends to use stories as devices of foreshadowing. In season 3, Bran’s tale of the Rat Cook foreshadows both the Red Wedding as well as Arya’s revenge when she serves Walder Frey a pie made of his sons in season 7. In season 3, Shireen brings ser Davos a book about Aegon the Conqueror and his dragons when he sits in the dungeons of Dragonstone and the story she tells foreshadows Daenerys’ return to the very same place in season 7.
Some people argue that the show has simply given (f)Aegon’s storyline to Jon. That is a valid argument but a specific utterance by GRRM makes me believe that a Second Dance of Dragons will involve Jon at some point in the books as well:
I’ve been always very impressed by Homer and his Iliad, especially the scene of the fight between Achilles and Hector. Who is the hero and who is the villain? That’s the power of the story and I wanted something similar to my books. The hero of one side is the villain of the other side. (GRRM)
This is a very interesting quote in the context of a Second Dance of Dragons. I’ve demonstrated that the stage is set for a conflict between Daenerys and (f)Aegon. However, (f)Aegon has nowhere near the narrative weight of a Hector or an Achilles. He is introduced too late in the story for that. However, we must remember that (f)Aegon also serves as a foil to Jon in relation to the trope of the Hidden Prince. @randomtvramblings has argued that Jon embodies the qualities of the ideal king that Varys is trying to mould (f)Aegon into. (f)Aegon is Jon’s mirror - the false coin to Jon as the true prince. Furthermore, Jon is the only other character that has the narrative weight to play the Hector (defender) to Daenerys’ Achilles (invader). Both characters are among the central protagonists of the story and they are both considered heroic - but what happens if one becomes an antagonist to the other? Then “the hero of one side becomes the villain of the other side” as GRRM so eloquently puts it.
So this is my argument as to why the Second Dance of Dragons will involve Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow. His claim supersedes hers and fAegon doesn’t have the narrative importance to give this future conflict sufficient narrative weight. Furthermore, the show may condense and eliminate some plots but they do work towards an endgame given to them by GRRM - and in this perspective, the inclusion of a reference to The Dance of the Dragons combined with the elimination of fAegon is notable and very interesting - and, IMO, foreshadowing an eventual conflict between Jon and Dany.
You said that you can’t find any metas about this subject. First of all, make sure you type the right words into the search: it is Dance of the Dragons (not A Dance with Dragons). Some people also add a 2.0 to their metas (Dance of Dragons 2.0, or DoD 2.0).
Thanks for the ask. I hope this cleared up a few things for you.
