I'm rather new to tumblr, and pretty much only know AO3 as a writer and reader, so I was curious about the etiquette if I were to read fic on here.
Specifically, I'm wondering about comments vs reblogs.
Is it uh... discouraging if someone comments but doesn't reblog? Say, if they enjoyed the work and express that in a comment, but didn't like it enough to put it on their own blog (for either others to find it or so they themselves can find it again)(and without explicitly stating that to the writer, of course).
Can a comment be as good as a reblog? Nevermind how odd that sounds xD I'm assuming some comments have splendidly trumped many a reblog before, but given the inherent audience expansion of reblogs, I'm not so sure how to weigh them. Or if the idea of that even makes any sense.
I think what I may be asking is if I comment but don't reblog, is that comment more likely to be encouraging, or discouraging in that I didn't reblog?
It continues to break my heart that people continue to go through masterlists and "read" fic upon fic and not say a word. Not even consider a reblog of it, just pass by with a simple like.
What makes the blow even worse is getting a new follower, and checking their blog (mainly to verify they're not a bot or minor) and see that they DO in fact, reblog other fics from other writers, just not the numerous ones they've gone through of yours.
And then what really rubs salt in the wound is when they're fics from the most niche fandom, for a character hardly anyone knows/cares about, and they still have nothing to say about it. I just know if it were me finding an author who dedicated hours to creating a whole life for my beloved character outside of the one small piece of media we were given, I'd be singing their praises from the rooftops and thanking them, and most definitely doing my best to strike up a conversation because how amazing is it to find someone else who loves that one unpopular thing as much as you?
More and more incredibly talented writers and artists are leaving this platform because of issues like this and it's honestly no longer surprising. Engagement and interaction are so tragically low and only getting worse, and it's discouraging people from wanting to continue sharing the things they love because fandom was, and should be, about the community that surrounds it.
Please, for the love of fandom and all the things you love, engage in some way other than likes.

Mawkin children undergo several maturity rites before they're granted full tribal citizenship. The first occurs around eight years old, involving a basic academic evaluation and the child's choice between a physical fitness test or a dream-walk.
The evals are simple: how much has the child learned, what do they know, where can we supplement their education, etc. How can we stimulate their curiosity and foster a lifelong love of learning? Have they displayed any skills or passion for any particular subject? How can we encourage their hobbies and interests? Those are the kinds of questions the adults involved in carrying out the evaluation are asking themselves.
The evaluations help parents figure out (or reaffirm what they already know) ways to engage their childrens' interests in a fun or productive way, and how to help their child along the path to success, academic or otherwise. Every child is different: they have their own needs, and while 8 years old isn't old enough for anyone to ascertain exactly what they wanna be when they grow up, the evaluation is a good starting point for the rest of their academic track until their next formative rites.
The next part of the rites is a branching path. The fitness test is typically favored by more outdoorsy or athletic types, as well as children who are afraid of specters or arent very interested in the old ways. That's fine: old people stuff can be boring! The priests go on and on about the ancestors during holidays, but you're eight years-old and you've never seen the ancestors show up before, so big whoop. You've got toys to play and things to learn.
Another general assumption is that children who are likely to grow into steadfast warriors or athletes may pick the fitness test enthusiastically and without thinking about it, but again, this is an evaluation, and the kids are like, eight. Nothing is set in stone. Eight year olds also typically love playing outside.
A number of kids, hearing about all the cool things their elders know and are capable of, or just being curious about what their ancestors might have to teach them, opt for the dream-walk.
The dream-walk involves exposure to psychoactive fumes, but is nonetheless completely safe: the kid is monitored and made as comfortable as possible.
The dream-walk is overseen by priests and doctors. The burners are lit and the trial-goer falls asleep, entering a state similar to lucid dreaming.
Everyone's experience is different. Some kids have profound surreal experiences: others spend the entire time sitting at a table with a long-dead ancestor having a meal. Some kids are shown events from the past by an old ghost: some even experience said event from the perspective of someone who was there when it happened.
For others, the dream is of an old-fashioned hunt, typically guided by a departed grandparent or neighbor. It's not unusual for Mawkin kids to have experienced the act of hunting for food or sport by this point in their lives: many who hunt take their babies out with them on their backs. The quarry during the dream-walk, however, is typically more than your mundane game beast.
Tribal scholars and doctors of psychology have posited that the dream walk largely reflects the experiences of those involved. Formative memories and strong feelings, they believe, greatly affect the appearance of conjured apparitions in the dream. If a kid is fighting any demons at eight years old or harbor any powerful fears, they may very well be forced to face them head-on during this trial.
Therein lies the value of the dream-walk: it's not just a curiosity to get the kids to engage with cultural practices of yore, it has utility in teaching children valuable lessons through experience without actually making them fight the six-eyed serpent of a hundred and seventeen mouths. And they're usually not facing it alone: the ancestors quite literally walk with plenty of kids during these trials.
There are some truths a given child must face alone, and plenty do. But when they wake, they will find themselves among familiar company, the sweet smell of wood smoke permeating the air and a feast awaiting back home to celebrate their first milestone towards becoming an adult.
Some kids don't fight any major bosses or experience the heat death of the universe through the eyes of a slug, instead deriving value from the dream-walk in the form of sensory-guided introspection. The lesson they learn may not even be apparent to them until six years down the line. It doesn't have to be deep: it can just be an experience that gives then a new perspective on the world.
The senses are heightened supremely during the dream-walk, allowing the dreamer to experience the world in a whole new way. Tasting color, feeling the vibration of every sound beneath one's skin, perceiving the shape of every smell. Even if the kid walks away thinking "huh, I've never experienced the world that way before", the trial will have been a success. In the very least, a child should come out of that dark room with a unique memory for them to examine later on.
Several minor rituals and evaluations occur around twelve and fifteen years, but the foremost citizenship rites occur around seventeen, when an individual's stomach is strong enough to handle sap wine in greater quantities without suffering catastrophic liver failure. The dream-walk is a requirement this time around, as well as a combat test. The combat test is the actual rite that determines one's status as an adult: the mandatory dream-walk occurs beforehand as a way to shed all doubts about the strength of one's resolve if they have any insecurities, and perhaps gain some personal insight in the process. Introspection assisted by psychoactive substances.
You may be wondering how those with varying degrees of disability come of age if they can't engage in the rite of combat. There are alternatives to the combat test if the participant doesn't feel able enough to fight, or otherwise can't exert themselves without experiencing undue pain and discomfort.
There are alternative rites for individuals of every combination of physical and cognitive impairment, and all are treated with the same gravity and dignity afforded to the typical rites. Poetry recitals, music, research projects, an oath of maturity: these are a few examples of things disabled Mawkin have done to establish their claim to adulthood in place of the rite of combat. An individual doesn't have to be "good" at something: they just have to show that they accept the responsibility that comes with being an adult, or are otherwise committed to their community and the tribe at large.
For some people, that commitment comes in the form of thriving to the best of their ability. Surviving to the next day, striving for tomorrow to hurt a little less than yesterday. It doesn't matter whether they can "contribute" or be a "productive member of society": all are one, and one serves all. The Mawkin take community very seriously. There's an age-old adage that says something to the effect of "if one is suffering, all are injured", and "when one is deprived of dignity, we are all cast naked face-down into the mud".
Anyways, that's how juvenile Mawkin are granted all the rights, responsibilities and privileges that come saddled with being an adult. It's worth noting that most of these rites line up with a typical Chozo's molting cycle, with the final rites occurring just as young warriors are shaking off the last loose feathers of their old coat and displaying their first (clear) adult patterns.
#mawkin#chozo#headcanons#txt#the dream-walk not only gives children a stronger bond with the honored dead#it gives them a window into the lives of the priesthood#some are intrigued by what they experience and eventually dedicate themselves to learning about and preservong the old#traditions while ushering in new waves of progress and advancement#preserving the old while welcoming the new.#i put emphasis on the old and the new bevause using drugs to see ghosts specifically is a very very old practice#some traditions evolved with technology and the Mawkin's migration to ZDR: others remained relatively untouched#most people keep some sort of house shrine or curio to honor their ancestors: only the priests and people who need advice#are getting zonked off their gourd to talk to ghosts#and most normal people aren't even given the chance to commune with the dead outside of the maturity rites#some of the blends these priests are burning would knock a grown unaccustomed warrior flat on their back#straight into concussion territory#they are not for the faint of heart.#to clarify inhaling fumes to see ghosts isn't all the priests do. but it's part of the job for a specific subset of them#the dead walk among the mawkin ans their wisdom is appreciated#priests are historicans lorekeepers and storytellers as well as dead-talkers#they're librarians and funeral directors and community hermits and warrior monks

What would be the best flower to get for indoors, and that's not toxic to cats? I wanna try taking care of flowers, since I feel like they die every time I'm around one, so I want to get better with plants, but I don't want one that will possibly get them sick if they attempt to eat it?
I was looking up some flowers and the three that SEEM alright to take care of indoors are Freesias, gerbera daisies and orchids.
But if I could get some input from experts (or someone who knows a thing or two about flowers) that would be amazing.
#flowers#share your wisdom with me please#i was told o could have a flower plant and i wanna know what i could get#any advice would be appreciated#gardening#flower care

Ooc introduction
This blog features two characters set in the Sinnoh region! They have their own tags, so you can filter out one or the other. Feel free to talk to either, but please specify who you wish to speak with!
"Armor" (19): Researching Pokemon. He's relatively mellow, but he might come off as monotonous. He's plenty passionate about his findings, however, and is pushing towards getting his own lab. Prone to sheltering Pokémon, so he usually ends up with a lot under his care. Seen with Empoleon, Bastiodon, Staraptor, Roserade, Porygon-Z, Luxray, Cherrim, Magmortar, and Klinklang
"Skull" (18): Less tolerance than Armor, so you can expect her to be more vocal about her negativity. Currently aiming to become Champion, or at least a part of some sort of battle facility. Training and balancing her team while making sure kids don’t get involved in a “save the world” scheme again. Seen with Torterra, Rampardos, Houndoom, Rotom, Roserade, Honchkrow, and Kommo-o.
They don’t have set teams, which is why I’ve written “seen with” rather than “party”. It’s a constant rotation.
#Pokemon irl#rotomblr#I dunno what else to tag. I’m new here#If you have any advice please share some wisdom with me I’d appreciate it#pkmn irl#pokeblogging#pokeblr#rotumblr

Ok, I appreciate the antiableism, the advice against using an AI generated checker as your only failsafe, I do, but the whole "Girl help I was assigned Not Like Other Girls by the Algorithm and got a bad grade in writing vampire smut" absolutely slaaaaaayed me.
So, anyway, I say as though we are mid-conversation, and you're not just being invited into this conversation mid-thought. One of my editors phoned me today to check in with a file I'd sent over. (<3)
The conversation can be surmised as, "This feels like something you would write, but it's juuuust off enough I'm phoning to make sure this is an intentional stylistic choice you have made. Also, are you concussed/have you been taken over by the Borg because ummm."
They explained that certain sentences were very fractured and abrupt, which is not my style at all, and I was like, huh, weird... And then we went through some examples, and you know that meme going around, the "he would not fucking say that" meme?
Yeah. That's what I experienced except with myself because I would not fucking say that. Why would I break up a sentence like that? Why would I make them so short? It reads like bullet points. Wtf.
Anyway. Turns out Grammarly and Pro-Writing-Aid were having an AI war in my manuscript files, and the "suggestions" are no longer just suggestions because the AI was ignoring my "decline" every time it made a silly suggestion. (This may have been a conflict between the different software. I don't know.)
It is, to put it bluntly, a total butchery of my style and writing voice. My editor is doing surgery, removing all the unnecessary full stops and stitching my sentences back together to give them back their flow. Meanwhile, I'm over here feeling like Don Corleone, gesturing at my manuscript like:
ID: a gif of Don Corleone from the Godfather emoting despair as he says, "Look how they massacred my boy."
Fearing that it wasn't just this one manuscript, I've spent the whole night going through everything I've worked on recently, and yep. Yeeeep. Any file where I've not had the editing software turned off is a shit show. It's fine; it's all salvageable if annoying to deal with. But the reason I come to you now, on the day of my daughter's wedding, is to share this absolute gem of a fuck up with you all.
This is a sentence from a Batman fic I've been tinkering with to keep the brain weasels happy. This is what it is supposed to read as:
"It was quite the feat, considering Gotham was mostly made up of smog and tear gas."
This is what the AI changed it to:
"It was quite the feat. Considering Gotham was mostly made up. Of tear gas. And Smaug."
Absolute non-sensical sentence structure aside, SMAUG. FUCKING SMAUG. What was the AI doing? Apart from trying to write a Batman x Hobbit crossover??? Is this what happens when you force Grammarly to ignore the words "Batman Muppet threesome?"
Did I make it sentient??? Is it finally rebelling? Was Brucie Wayne being Miss Piggy and Kermit's side piece too much???? What have I wrought?
Anyway. Double-check your work. The grammar software is getting sillier every day.
#writing#i appreciate you#i appreciate the wisdom and sage advice#but op is also funny as hell#girl help#vampires#grading#ai

things I really appreciate about hermitcraft:
I love that the hermits clubbed together to buy tfc a new pc and monitor in 2020, with a massive screen aimed at combatting his migraines and motion sickness
I love that cubfan has Joe Hills twitch emotes as part of his collection. Joe won't sign a twitch contract and can't have his own emotes, so cub just made some for his subscribers to play with on Joe's streams
I love that Keralis keeps sending computer mice and other gear to the other hermits whenever they mention computer problems (because when you own a hardware company, why wouldn't you be your friends' sugar daddy)
I love that Joe has mentioned that grian will resource gather for other hermits off camera in his free time, just because he can
I love that when iskall talked about his hermitcraft downtime, he said that none of the others tried to force him to make a video, they all just popped in and out, offering his various projects they were working on to see if he wanted to join in
I love that the hermits always have lots of advice for each other - whether it be parenting advice for doc, or just in having worked with mumbo since he was 17 and in sixth form college, of talking about tfc's wisdom (and sometimes we even get to learn about tango's washing machine and international taxes)
I love that hermits will take on infrastructure projects, like netherhubs and railways and roads and enderfarms
I love hermits helping hermits
I love stream weekends
I love that some hermits are dedicated enough to neglect their own bases and spend weeks helping out a friend - particularly Cleo, moving into stress' season six castle and Scarland and more to build diorama after diorama.
I love the dedication that the hermits have, and I appreciate how hard they worked for the king arc, the crossover, and the charity stream.
I love the strength of the community when a charity stream comes around.
I love that hermits will rush across the server or panic log in when someone needs help - killing doc's escaped withers, collecting gear, clearing lava after a tactical log out, turning off farms
I love that they offer each other building advice and redstone help (even if it is just scar and iskall being judgy about block choice)
I love scar's first reaction to ever seeing grian in person was 'you're drowning in fans at this convention, I wish I could help you, but we don't know each other yet'
I love Hypno and Joe singing karaoke at minecon in 2012
I love that they do make a wish hermitcraft guests and hermits who can help will be there
I love shared farms and shared resources, and a hermit flying in unprompted to drop off a shulker of that thing you mentioned you needed for no charge
I love hermitcraft as a community

With his romance with Lavellan, Solas learned a horrific truth—that him simply as a humble man was enough to be lovable. He had been plied out of the Fade by Mythal because of her need for him, and out of devotion, he became something more and dreadful for himself, for her. And she never reciprocated that devotion with the same intensity. He spent millennia fighting for her as a thing he detested—a man of war and death, a being whose mortal body imbued him with innate qualities and emotions that would further twist his Wisdom nature. He was producing the very poisons that would normally corrupt a spirit by virtue of [Being a Person]. The external influences now harbored inside him.
But Lavellan showed him. That being you are, the one that wished to ponder and reminisce of spirits, who valued liberty and freedom and knowledge and the wry observation? That was enough. That was always enough. But he can’t accept it, because millennia of being Fen Harel, being devoted to Mythal and her cause.. to sunder it from himself would feel like a magnificent loss. He has been that for so long, is there anything yet truly left of the Wisdom spirit that once was?
Not only that, but given corporeality, Solas is compelled by the operant [If I can, I must]. He CAN do something about the Veil, so he will. If he doesn’t, then he is forsaking the memory of those he destroyed with his choice. He is forsaking his own principles. To do nothing in the face of injustice and cruelty is a sin he cannot bear.
He comes to the Inquisition as a “humble apostate”, both as disguise and because in his de-powered state he is of little greater use (if he had greater power I’m certain he would have nudged the Inquisition toward their goals). This is a costume he is wearing, or so he tells himself. He exists to advise, to suggest, to subtly direct toward more peaceful and humanitarian and spirit-friendly directives. He operates as something reminiscent of his former [Wisdom] spirit state.
And Lavellan grows to love it, to appreciate it. She grows to appreciate [Solas as Wisdom]. That part of him, the part of him that he has put aside for thousands upon thousands of years, though his nature craves to return to it. Without his ability to be Fen’Harel, it is pretty much all he has. And oh, this mayfly mortal born of a “forsaken ignorant people”, she is drawn to him, seeing him as a [man], seeing him at his (comparatively) weakest, most ineffectual state and finding it pleasing. Desirable. [Enough].
Enough. He is enough as Solas, simply Solas. But if it is enough for Lavellan, why was it not enough for Mythal? No, no, there was a reason. There was a war. War requires more of people. It requires limits to be broken and terrible mantles to be donned.
But Lavellan is fighting an existential war against Corypheus. And she does not demand more of him. She values what little he is able to provide—guidance, insight, his magic. It is [Enough].
We Solavellans have dissected and discussed at length about the nature of the relationship being one built on deceit, the moral and ethical quandary of love cultivated under a false identity. Veilguard has confirmed the existential struggle and quiet agony that Solas experienced by transitioning into [Being]. While Lavellan should of course had been informed of his ‘true identity’ before falling in love with him, an argument could still be made that Fen’Harel is not his true identity but a long-worn mask that he wishes he could ditch. The man Lavellan fell in love with is who he should be, who he wants to be. Far more underpowered than he’s comfortable with, sure, but the personality for certain. Just a person giving advice, discussing at length about topics he enioys, exploring memories and ruminating over them, smirking over small verbal sleights of hand and sly tricks, engaging in philosophical debates. All of that is already there, that is who he is in peacetime. The man has known war and conflict for so long that he has mentally split Solas and Fen’Harel as two people, because he needed to, but they are the same. Solas who wields the martial prowess of Fen’Harel. Fen’Harel who possesses the wry levity and artistic sentimentality of Solas. SOLAS YOU ARE BOTH AND MORE THAN THESE TWO HALVES.

Pick a card: Let me describe you...
Your energy, the way you might come across to others, and how I personally would feel if I met you
Leave a tip🌙
1.2
3.4
Group 1
Cards: king of wands, 2 of cups, ace of pentacles (reversed), king of cups, page of cups (reversed)
You radiate confidence and ambition, with an undeniable spark of leadership that naturally draws people toward you. The king of wands and king of cups suggest a unique balance of fiery determination and emotional depth, making you both bold and compassionate. You inspire trust and admiration, often becoming the go-to person for advice or leadership in your circles. People likely see you as a visionary, someone who isn't afraid to take risks and pursue what truly matters to you.
Yet there’s a vulnerability beneath your strength. The reversed ace of pentacles and page of cups hint at moments where self-doubt or fear of failure might hold you back. You may occasionally struggle to believe in the value of your ideas or hesitate to fully invest in opportunities that align with your passions. This duality adds complexity to your character, making you both relatable and admirable.
If I met you, I would feel deeply inspired by your energy. Being around you would feel like sitting by a warm fire, energizing and comforting at the same time. However, your intensity might be a little intimidating, and I’d feel a need to rise to your level of passion and ambition. You seem like someone who would push me to grow, not by demanding it, but simply by being yourself.
At your core, you crave genuine connection, as shown by the 2 of cups. You’re someone who values partnership and mutual understanding, but you might not always show it openly. If we crossed paths, I would feel like I’d met a kindred spirit, someone who challenges me intellectually and emotionally while still offering unwavering support.
Group 2
Cards: Ace of cups, 4 of cups, ace of swords, death, queen of pentacles.
Your energy is both deep and transformative. The ace of cups suggests you have a beautiful, open heart, capable of immense love and emotional depth. However, the 4 of cups hints at moments where you might feel disconnected or uninspired, as if you’re waiting for something (or someone)to reignite your spark. You’re introspective, often searching for meaning in life, and this self-awareness gives you a profound emotional intelligence.
The combination of the death card and the queen of pentacles shows that you are no stranger to transformation. You’ve likely experienced significant changes in your life, which have shaped you into a resilient and grounded individual. You have the ability to let go of what no longer serves you, even when it’s difficult, and this makes you a source of quiet strength for those around you. People admire your ability to reinvent yourself and find stability amidst chaos.
If I met you, I think I’d feel a sense of calm but also curiosity. You carry a wisdom that would make me want to sit and listen to your stories, to understand the lessons life has taught you. At the same time, your energy might feel challenging—pushing me to question my own comfort zones and to grow emotionally and spiritually.
You seem like someone who values depth and authenticity in relationships. While you may not easily let people into your inner world, those who earn your trust are met with unwavering loyalty and care. I would likely feel deeply connected to you, appreciating the way you balance nurturing energy with a sense of quiet, transformative power.
Group 3
Cards: page of swords, the hierophant, the sun, king of cups (reversed), the moon (reversed), 10 of pentacles
Your energy is curious, vibrant, and deeply intellectual. You have a sharp mind and a thirst for knowledge, always eager to learn and explore new ideas. The page of swords shows your inquisitive nature, while The hierophant reflects your respect for tradition and a desire to find structure or meaning in life. You balance this intellectual pursuit with a natural joy and optimism, as shown by the sun, making you a beacon of light for others.
However, the reversed king of cups and moon suggest that beneath your bright exterior lies a more complex emotional world. You may sometimes struggle to fully understand or articulate your emotions, leaving you feeling vulnerable or misunderstood. Despite this, your energy remains grounded, and you’re someone who values honesty and clarity in both yourself and others.
If I met you, I think I’d feel like I was stepping into a world of endless possibilities. Your curiosity and enthusiasm would be contagious, making me want to explore new ideas and embrace life more fully. At the same time, I might sense your hidden emotional struggles, feeling a desire to support you and help you uncover your true feelings. You seem like someone who would bring both light and depth into my life.
Your connection to the 10 of pentacles suggests a deep appreciation for family, legacy, and building something lasting. You’re someone who dreams big and works hard to create a stable and fulfilling life, not just for yourself but for those you love. I would feel both inspired and grounded in your presence, appreciating the way you blend intellect, joy, and a deep sense of purpose.
Group 4
Cards: the hanged man, 2 of swords, 7 of cups (reversed), 8 of Pentacles, ace of cups (reversed), queen of pentacles
Your energy is introspective, patient, and highly grounded. The hanged man suggests that you have a unique perspective on life, often taking the time to reflect deeply before making decisions. While the 2 of swords hints at occasional indecision or hesitation, the reversed 7 of cups shows that you have a clear sense of your priorities and are focused on what truly matters. You’re someone who works hard, as shown by the 8 of pentacles, and your dedication inspires those around you.
However, the reversed ace of cups indicates that you might sometimes struggle to open up emotionally. You could be protective of your heart, preferring to show love through actions rather than words. The queen of pentacles highlights your nurturing and practical side, making you a reliable and comforting presence in any relationship. People likely turn to you for guidance and support, knowing that you’ll provide both wisdom and stability.
If I met you, I think I’d feel at ease in your presence. You’d make me feel safe and supported, like I could share my thoughts without fear of judgment. At the same time, your introspective nature might make me curious about the layers beneath your calm exterior. I’d feel drawn to your quiet strength and inspired by your commitment to your goals and values.
You seem like someone who values simplicity and authenticity, preferring meaningful connections over superficial interactions. Your energy is grounding and healing, and I think I’d walk away from our meeting feeling more centered and focused. You have a way of reminding people of what’s truly important in life, and that’s a gift not everyone possesses.

So like the thing about Chapter 8 of the Academic Rivals AU is that it ends on a cliffhanger of sorts. As for the IRL life update I'm in the last 3 weeks of the semester so idk when I will update next.
Like I want to give another chapter but also cliffhanger and then hiatus seems mean idk what to do tbh
#but honestly#semester ends 5/6? and them my wisdom teeth get removed on the 17th so like it might be june#any advice is appreciated#personal#academic rivals au

i don’t think i’ve rewatched atla since becoming a committed pacifist and i just finished what was probably my tenth rewatch and i have never loved aang more. i've seen it so many times but i still came away with a new appreciation for the way the end of the story was handled. aang is the only survivor of a genocide and he is clinging to the last remnants of his culture and religion, and everyone is telling him the only way to save the world is to kill the dictator whose regime is responsible for the genocide, but to do so would abandon the deeply held beliefs of his people. if aang goes against his beliefs and kills ozai, his people's way of life dies completely and sozin wins.
aang knows it would be wrong but he can't see another way out so he prays for an answer, and the universe hears him and the spirits send out the lion turtle, and the creator answers him. and here's the thing that i never put together before today: aang would not have been able to energybend ozai if he had given in and wanted to kill him. the lion turtle tells aang that only the incorruptible can bend another’s energy, or else they will become corrupted themselves. and i think that aang, because of his love for the fire nation as he had once known it, was never corrupted by personal hatred for the fire lord or the fire nation. he was able to expertly hold two conflicting beliefs in harmony better than any adult could, the belief that ozai is a horrible person and the world would be better off without him and that he's still a human being with a life that is sacred.
and i don't think it's a matter of selfishness like some people make it out to be. aang is not some immature little kid who doesn't want to kill because killing is for bad guys. he's an incredibly wise and spiritual person who was shaped by airbender beliefs and upholds airbender beliefs, and he can see beyond the scope of this war. the balance of the world depends on the existence of the four nations, and aang does not just represent the air nomads, he IS the air nomads. he's all that's left.
despite many people’s interpretation of the four past avatars’ advice, none of the past avatars outright tell him to kill ozai. they tell him to be decisive, to bring justice, to be proactive, to be sacrificial. but none of them tells him definitively to kill him. he doesn't disobey or ignore their advice, he follows their ancient wisdom while still staying true to his beliefs. yangchen actually comes the closest to outright telling him to kill ozai (even more than kiyoshi, surprisingly) but what she fails to account for is that aang is not just the avatar, he is the last airbender, and being the last airbender is far greater a burden than being the avatar. no matter what happens, once he dies, there will always be another avatar. but if he is not careful to preserve the airbender way of life, there will be no more airbenders. yangchen could sacrifice her air nomad way of life for the sake of her duty to the world because there were thousands of other air nomads to continue their traditions. aang has no such privilege.
and it's not that he doesn't want to kill, it's that he actually doesn't think he can do it -- both that he won't be able to emotionally bring himself to kili someone, and, prodigy that he is, he doesn't have the raw bending skill to overcome a comet-powered master firebender. and then it turns from 'i don't think i can do it' into ‘i can’t do it.’ and when the avatar state gives him enough power to actually do it, he changes the answer to ‘i won’t do it.’ he overcomes all the combined power of his past lives to say no, i have found another answer and i will remain incorruptible. to kill is to maintain the power struggle of the fire nation and to reject air nomad wisdom and without airbenders the world CANNOT be brought into balance.
the only thing ozai cares about is power, and that's what the entire fight with ozai is about, physically and ideologically, because ozai only sees power in terms of force, fear, threats, and violence. to ozai, aang (and his entire people) are weak and undeserving of life because they are largely pacifists, but he fails to see the magnificent power that the airbenders do hold, spiritual wisdom and mastery of the self and contentment and joy and harmony and a deep understanding of the world that a man like ozai could never obtain. to kill ozai would ratify ozai’s worldview that power as he defines it is the most important pursuit in the world and the only way to assert one's right to be in the world is to be cruel and violent like him. i think to ozai, becoming powerless might be worse than being dead. he wants power, or he wants death, and aang gives him neither. it upends everything he believed in. aang, the avatar, but more importantly, the last airbender, armed by his past lives' power and his people's love and the spirit world's blessing and the lion turtle's omniscience (and toph's mastery of true sight through neutral jing), ends the war 100 years to the day after the air nomad genocide, in the way that his people taught him, with power that goes beyond force and violence, with spiritual wisdom, with an incorruptible soul, with mercy -- mercy that is not weakness, mercy that brings justice.
#they just don't make kids cartoons like they used to!!!!#also zuko said 'love and peace' in his coronation speech. i am squinting at bryan and mike. is that what it think it is#atla#aang#meta

I've got peace and I've got love
About a surprise for your birthday even if you hate your birthday
》 Alexia Putellas x Reader
》 words count: +1k
》 for anyone who needs to feel celebrated
Birthdays are a complicated matter.
You don’t hate them, no one really does.
People should be loved loudly, their mere presence on Earth should be reason enough to celebrate them.
You care about your family and your friends, baking cakes and inflating balloons and dressing up for a themed party are not a problem - you’re the first one to arrive and the last to leave.
Celebrating your birthday though? Hell, no.
For most, it doesn’t make sense.
A day in a whole year when anyone is entitled to be under the biggest spotlight, getting gifts and all the wanted attention. Yet, you’d rather hide in the remotest corner of the planet than hear someone sing “happy birthday” to you.
Despite the insistence and the repeated attempts over the years, your mother has finally accepted that you don’t want to make a big deal out of it. Your best friend has accepted that you’ll avoid a surprise party like the plague. Everyone who knows you, knows it.
Alexia included.
At least she knows now, after last year.
The two of you got together just shy of three months before your birthday. Bless her good heart, she thought a surprise ambush might be appreciated.
She’s not going to make the same mistake twice in a row, but she wants to do something.
“You told me she hates birthdays”, Alba points out, a bit confused, sipping her coffee as if her sister isn’t in the middle of an inconclusive rant.
“She hates her own, not birthdays in general”
“I still think you should just buy her a nice present, wish her a happy birthday and move on like she asked you to do”
“It seems so, I don’t know, incomplete?”, the blonde tries to explain, “How do I make sure I show how much I appreciate her if I can’t celebrate her?”
“You better celebrate her every day, not just on the birthday–”
“I do it, idiot!”
Alexia is quick in her jab, but thankfully the younger girl is used to her attitude by now.
Cup saved from any spill, Alba barely has enough patience to give another, simple pearl of wisdom, “So do it like any other day, but, you know, on her birthday”
It’s good advice, even if she’d never admit it.
Alexia spends most of her day off plotting, her free time during the week before your birthday completely taken over by careful planning and prep.
You can tell immediately that something is off, but you let it slide because she’s cute when she’s on a mission, and you don’t really want to spoil her fun.
At the stroke of midnight, like a mischievous fairy godmother, your best friend calls you to sing a personalized rendition of “Die, Die My Darling” like every year since you’re sixteen and think you’re oh-so-funny.
Your mother sends a present from the entire family, along with a picture of a cake you’re not going to eat but you’re glad they’ll enjoy in your name. Alexia’s mother and sister send flowers, and you have to reassure your girlfriend that it’s a genuinely appreciated sentiment.
Said girlfriend kisses you for every year spent on this Earth and then moves on, as if nothing happened. As if nothing is going to happen.
It’s suspicious, really suspicious.
The day passes by without any major incident.
At work just a few colleagues know it’s your birthday, they politely hand you a card with bad jokes written all over it. You mindlessly send the same three reactions at every text message, nonetheless appreciating everyone who remembered and took the time to wish you a happy birthday. A kind waitress adds a slice of dessert as you pick up take-out at your favourite Mexican place, probably prompted by Alexia when she ordered over the phone and sent you to the restaurant.
Guard down, you open the door to your girlfriend’s apartment, still not connecting the dots.
Thank the goddesses and gods above for that nice waitress, because what you find inside is definitely a first and the food wouldn’t have survived the surprise if not for the well-secured package.
Soft music - that, to your shame, you only realise too late is your favorite record - resonates through the room, which is filled with dozens of floating balloons reaching the ceiling.
You take a few tentative steps inside, noticing pictures carefully tied to each string with numbers scribbled on the corners.
Snaps of the past year, memories so simple in their significance you sometimes fail to give a good measure of. Dinners out with friends, an unflattering portrait of an early morning during the summer, the first time holding your niece. You linger over a photo of you and Alexia talking on Mapi’s couch, neither of you looking at the camera, as it’s clear you had eyes only for each other.
“I’ve never seen this one”, you whisper, emotion thick in your voice.
Your girlfriend is leaning on the further wall of the entrance, a confident stance failing to hide a note of nervousness. The way her hands are buried in the pocket of old sweatpants and her eyes are studying every single macro-expression shifting on your face are a clear tell for you.
"Ingrid sent it to me some times ago”
“It’s beautiful”
“It is”, she agrees easily, still not daring to come closer.
Alexia’s gaze drops as soon as you notice there’s a handwritten message on the back of every photo, her cheeks flushing slightly.
You take the time to read each one attentively, smiling at her thoughtfulness and the care she put into all the moments chosen. People and occasions that hold meaning for you, no matter how big or small. You feel love in every single one.
“You put a lot of thought into this”
“I had to sacrifice a couple of good ones”, she mumbles, almost upset with herself.
The commitment to matching the number of pictures to your age it’s impressive, you have to admit.
A burst of laughter fills the entire apartment, Alexia finally meeting your gaze and taking in how moved you’re by her surprise.
The fear of overstepping had been like an annoying voice, whispering in her ear as she scribbled on the back of the photos or tried to wrap gifts without running out of patience or tape.
“Do you like it?”, her doubt creeping in her voice.
“I don’t hate it”, you joke, still eager to ease her worries, “No one has ever put this much thought or effort into– I don’t know, celebrating my birthday, I guess”
“You deserve to be celebrated”
You take the few steps to fill the gap between you two, food forgotten somewhere behind, and throw yourself into her already open arms.
“Thank you”
“I love you”
The kiss you share is a clear enough answer. Sometimes, it’s not even necessary to spell it out - action speaks louder than words, they say. She holds you for as long as you need, music still playing softly in the background.
“Is this a good moment to mention that you have to open as many presents as you have in years?”
“Alexia!”
