I still remember adding smiling and the confused/thinking expression to my repertoire

Aged 8-12 me could only consciously grin & thought smiling was weird. But learned it anyway and it has been a smashing success.

Also teachers in school bother you less if you look like you're thinking and you won't look like a freak standing 4 minutes in the exact same space in the cereal aisle

In other words, socialization has been achieved

Third person limited, where the detail has to be important enough to the pov character as well or it couldn't/wouldn't be there

One of the things about writing that feels the silliest is when there’s a detail in the scene that the character doesn’t think is important but you know the reader will know it’s important because otherwise it wouldn’t be there, so you’re just sort of making eye contact with the reader over the character’s head and whispering “don’t tell them”
