So I had a phase a couple of months ago where I was watching a lot of Adventures with Purpose videos, which is a channel on YouTube of divers who travel the US with boats and sonar trying to find and recover vehicles and their drivers from bodies of water (until I remembered that I am deathly afraid of deep water and watching those videos at night started influencing my intrusive thoughts and giving me nightmares). One of the comments that always pops up on every single one of their videos is “why didn’t the first responders look there?” And it’s a reasonable question; the vehicles they do locate are often in areas that were known to have a lot of accidents, in areas that had been mentioned by the families or even by the police/first responders as areas of interest, or in areas literally adjacent to areas that had been searched. One vehicle of a teenager who committed suicide was found exactly where his mother said it would be after 8 months of the police refusing to look there (and they were subsequently very hostile to the divers when they found and identified it). And the answer to the question is always the same: lack of resources. The first responders lack the equipment, training, or manpower to do extensive water searches. Which is true and it’s not. It is true that rural communities often rely on volunteer first responders who often lack the necessary training and don’t have access to specialized dive teams. But at the same time, AwP is a team of 3-4 volunteers driving around in a camper van with a trailer using an inflatable boat, a fishing sonar, and a bunch of magnets and buoys. So the cold cases from 40 years ago, yes, I fully believe the technology and resources weren’t available. But recently missing teenager whose mother knew exactly where he would have gone? Absolutely should have been found by the cops within a matter of days, not by volunteers months later.
Just something I’ve been thinking about as we watch the government mobilize millions of dollars of military infrastructure to try and find a group of billionaires who were doomed the second their craft touched the water because their own hubris and limitless pockets allowed them to cut corners and dodge regulations.
They don’t look this hard for regular people.

Last week I revisited the raw footage of a show we produced a long time ago. It's our first episode of Adventures with Purpose, the one about Egypt.
At the time, we'd been using a lot of classical music from music libraries. This series, though, no matter what genre of music it lent itself to wouldn't be able to paint with such broad strokes like that. The script pivoted too much within sequences so the music would have to be highly crafted.
Okay two things:
The first is that whether library or original, the music we used never pivoted because the narration for a particular place never pivoted. We would have music for a church. Music for boat ride. Music for a particular kind of museum.
The new series wasn't as wedded to places as it was ideas. And the script for a particular location might juggle two or three of these, each with its own vibe.
The second thing's that during the previous summer I was introduced to music loops by teenagers at camp (believe it or not). Loops are individual phrases of music from any and every instrument (or sound effect) that, when you Tetris them just so, create pieces of music.
With those two ideas swimming in my head around the same time, I decided I wanted to have a go at creating a soundtrack for an hour-long travel documentary. Having read the script for the first episode, Egypt, it seemed to me that, more than anything and quite legitimately, I could lean into sound design with loops and create an atmosphere rather than a melodic sound. After all, when you're exploring pyramids and tombs and temples and speaking a lot about death and the afterlife as conceived by ancient Egyptians, crafting a mysterious, ethereal, sometimes creepy design for the sound holds a lot of appeal. I even recorded myself slowly whispering various Egyptian names and playing them backwards with a lot of reverb. In the show, you get a sense of words being spoken... but no idea at all what those words are.
I loved it.
And I loved the way that worked through the entire show.
So then last week I revisited the raw footage of that show to fashion some clips for Instagram. Again: pyramids and tombs and temples and speaking a lot about death and the afterlife as conceived by ancient Egyptians.
For a minute I thought about underscoring it with something orchestral, cinematic. But pyramids and tombs and temples and speaking a lot about death and the afterlife as conceived by ancient Egyptians. You know?
It just begs for mysterious, ethereal, sometimes creepy, and words you can barely sense but can't understand.
Unfortunately, of all the music I composed back then, I don't have any of that music. I don't know why. Where it should be on my drives... it's just not there. So over the last week I crafted some new pieces from scratch.
I can only imagine how much fun I must've had the first time with the amount of work that had to be done. My process starts with a bit of trial and error, listening to likely sounds from particular loop libraries I bought for the occasion and still possess. Once I settle on one or two as the basis for the sound design, then I have a pretty good sense of what I need to add. Of course I don't know exactly what to add and how to add it... which is where the fun comes in. It's trying a bit of this color here, that color there. More reverb. Less reverb. Removing some earlier elements. Futzing with volumes. Getting the timing of everything just so. Dialing in delay if I want it. Running a sound backwards.
It's a lot of fun to play with. To imagine as the sound of exploring tombs in the Valley of the Kings. To imagine what would make it creepier here. Mysterious there. Ethereal as we move on to the afterlife? And then, once imagining it, making it happen and listening all over again later because I picked at this, tweaked and tweaked, over the course of a few days until it was all just so.
And those backward whispering voices? I don't have the exact ones anymore but I do have some from another show. And I'm using them backwards. Know what I mean? It largely doesn't make a difference what the words really are. Also, if I really wanted to, I could record new sound with my Zoom Q2n... but what I've got absolutely does the trick.
So long as no one, you know, plays it back in reverse. 🤔

Adventures With Purpose came across my tiktok fyp again, this time with a more horrifying story than usual. (Read More line in case people need it.)
They found a car with the missing person hanging out of the back window. He was SO CLOSE and still died, probably snagged on some part of the inside of the vehicle.
All the comments were "so sad!" And "so touching!" (in regards to the crew getting him out)
And I'm here, watching in horror, thinking, "Drowning is one of my worst-case scenarios. To be that close to freedom and dying anyway?? Even worse."
So yeah. I got a window breaker/seatbelt cutter.
Am I still watching these videos?
Unfortunately, yes. It's like true crime but scarier. I can't NOT watch.

Ok. So, you know that TV show Ghost Adventures? Let's make it Danny phantom.
Danny, Sam, and Tucker are college age. Danny's studying astrophysics and astronomy. Tucker's studying engineering. And Sam's double majoring in occult studies and parapsychology. They're not in Amity Park, I don't know where they'd be but it would probably be a really haunted city/town. They need some extra money so they start a paranormal investigation group kinda like what Ghost Adventures is, but local. They post their findings on YouTube. They basically blow up overnight and get monetized after they get a few videos out there.
Danny is the "medium". (He's not a medium. He just has ghost powers.)
Tucker's the tech specialist.
Sam's the occult specialist.
But instead of provoking the ghosts and being rowdy and screaming all the time (don't get me wrong, the show is funny and I do enjoy watching it, but we all know they're not always respectful of the spirits.), they're actually trying to solve the problem the ghost is posing. They try to compromise with them and help them pass on.
Sam sends Danny into creepy basements by himself just like Zak does with Aaron. She also pulls the most obscure and random occult facts out of her ass. One time, she told the audience that it was possible to exorcise ghosts using music. She proceeded to play Riptide on a ukulele for the spirit of a pre-teen girl and it worked. After the episode is over, people go to look it up, and low and behold, there it is.
Tucker makes progressively more insane and less believable gadgets to contact and interact with ghosts. Their audience tunes in every week wonder what he'll have next. The last episode, it was some sort of ghostly etch-a-sketch. AND THE GHOSTS ACTUALLY USED IT. Did one of them draw a dick on it like a smart ass? Probably.
Sometimes Danny has full on conversations with no one on camera. He waves when there's no one else in the room. He scolded a poltergeist that tried to push him down the stairs. He consistently says that most ghosts just need a hug. Dark spirit? Hug it. Violent poltergeist? They need a hug. Ghostly child? HUG. The audience notices his eyes glowing in the dark. Is it special effects? No one knows.
No one can tell if they're serious or not. They had a literal gun that shoots ghosts. They play music for ghosts. They have ghostly etch-a-sketches. Unless you're from Amity Park, there's no way you're believing that.
But, people who have their properties investigated often say that the activity stops or de-intensifies or changes all together. People may have to change things, like hanging up a photo of the deceased, holding a memorial service, or stopping/changing renovations. But they make the ghost happy or even pass on. That way they stop throwing the good china out of the cabinets.

this is just a small thing but I really appreciate the attention to detail w finn’s body type in farm world vs in ooo
farm world finn has a very “dehydrated bodybuilder action star” look which shows that while he’s physically strong he probably isn’t the healthiest n doesn’t have very many recourses, what with living on the outskirts of a gritty post apocalypse town. meanwhile ooo finn has a strongman’s build n it’s really clear that he’s physically strong AND is taking care of himself thanks to the resources he has access to that farm world finn doesn’t. such a great subtle bit of environmental storytelling to show the differences between dimensions
