Zelda woke all at once, pulled out of a dream she couldn’t remember, but it left her with an anxious feeling in her chest that was only worsened by her unfamiliar surroundings. She made to sit up, and then felt the hilt of the knife still in the palm of her hand under the pillow and the memories of the previous day came rushing back.
That made her bolt up as she looked for Lilith, and to her relief she found herself to be alone in the room. Then she withdrew the knife from under the pillow then and tucked it back into her sleeve, taking the time to look around more carefully. True to her word, the captain had given her the bed to herself, leaving the other side completely untouched, though as far as Zelda could tell everything else in the room was also unchanged, making her wonder just what the captain had done all night.
Not that she should complain about being left alone. Lilith seemed true to her word that she wasn’t going to harm her, or at least not in cold blood. But Zelda couldn’t figure the woman out, and that bothered her, like an itch in her mind she couldn’t quite shake. She had a knack for knowing people, knowing their motives and their behaviors better than themselves within minutes of meeting, but Lilith was the exception, always stepping left when she expected her to go right. While that was infuriatingly confusing, her expectations of outright cruelty being contradicted did make her chest relax a little.
Like she’d been summoned by Zelda’s thoughts, Lilith suddenly strode in, looking cheerful. Her hair was even more unruly than it had been the day before, no longer tamed by the captain’s hat, and she carried a plate and large mug. “Good morning, precious.”
Zelda sneered, her brief comfort with the woman overtaken by anger. “Must you call me that?”
“I didn’t manage to catch your name in the excitement of it all, precious,” Lilith stated quite frankly, and Zelda’s anger spiked again. “And it seems rude not to address you by anything.”
“There are plenty of other polite titles to refer to me by other than my monetary value to you.”
“Then what would you like me to call you, precious?” she said with a faux innocent look, a slight, sharp smile on her lips.
Zelda knew the nickname was meant to aggravate her, but that fact didn’t temper her frustration. “My name is Zelda Spellman,” she bit out, and the captain’s teasing gleam left for a more interested look.
“Zelda Spellman,” she repeated, rolling the name on her tongue like a fine wine. “Suits you.”
She wanted to ask what Lilith meant by that, but before she could Lilith set the plate and mug down, then sat in the chair across from it. “I saved you breakfast.”
Indeed she had – Zelda could see the plate loaded with cheese and bread and, miraculously, what looked like eggs. She stood slowly and made her way to the table, taking a careful seat. She studied the captain for a moment, who looked back at her mildly, before picking up her fork and taking a small bite of the eggs.
“Do you keep chickens on board?” she asked, remembering her brother mentioning that live animals would sometimes be brought on larger ships for long journeys.
“Yes,” Lilith said, and sighed. “It seems such a shame to leave the creatures to starve on the ships we raid, so we take them. They provide eggs for a while, and when they stop, they provide a nice dinner.”
Such a genuine answer from the captain surprised Zelda, even when tempered with practicality, and she ate the rest of her meal in silence, attempting again to figure the woman out while ignoring Lilith’s heavy gaze.
The food was good, and the mug of ale even better, and she pushed the empty dishes away when she’d finished. Lilith stared at her a moment longer before she stood, looking at her expectantly. “Come, let me show you around the ship.”
Zelda blinked, shocked by the captain, and it took her a moment by her words. “You won’t lock me in this room?”
“Did you think I would?” Lilith asked flatly, and her lack of emotion had Zelda’s anger spiking again.
“How am I supposed to know when you declined to tell me anything yesterday?”
“You never asked.” She turned up one corner of her mouth then. “Besides, as fun as it is to bring you your meals and watch you eat, I have other things to do with my time.”
As if it was such a burden, Zelda thought, but held her tongue. Not being locked up somewhere meant she’d have chances to explore the ship. She wasn’t sure how that would help her, but more information could never hurt, and perhaps what she found would help her form a plan on what to do the closer they sailed to England.
She stood, wordlessly, and the captain turned and opened the door, gesturing for her to go first. Zelda did, stepping out and onto the deck, blinking rapidly against the glare of the sun. As her eyes adjusted, she saw she was standing on a tall deck near the back of the ship, tucked away a bit, but from her vantage she could see nearly everything. Blood red sails billowed on three masts before her, and there were stairs on either side of the deck leading up and down, where the sounds of the crew working could be heard.
Lilith guided her down a set of stairs, showing her the galley and introducing her to the cook and other crewmen working in the kitchens. She was very formal, to Zelda’s surprise, referring to her by her proper name instead of some demeaning pet name.
They left the galley, Lilith guiding her down a second set of stairs, which brough them to the largest deck of the ship.
“This is the main deck,” Lilith told her, leaning against a barrel sitting next to the staircase. “It’s the center of the ship – you can get near anywhere from here, and the crew tends to congregate here.”
Indeed, there were more men here than Zelda had seen thus far, doing tasks or heading to another part of the ship or just milling about.
“Over there are the crew quarters,” Lilith pointed straight across to a door, “though I doubt you’ll want to spend much time there. Up the stairs you’ll find the deck with the first mate and quartermaster cabins.”
Zelda nodded, taking it all in. Just then boots sounded on the stairs behind them, and Zelda turned and moved out of the way as three men came down, holding a large coil of rope, cheerfully calling “captain” as they came down.
The men stared at Zelda, though she didn’t feel any malice coming from them. They just looked curious, their stares not uncomfortable, and Zelda made an effort to memorize their faces – they could be helpful. At the very least, not her enemy.
After they had passed, Lilith pushed off her barrel and stepped forward, guiding Zelda to a trapdoor. She flung it open and quickly descended the short ladder down before turning and looking back up at Zelda, holding a hand out. She clambered down, ignoring the hand, and turned to look into the bowels of the ship, blinking to see in the dim light.
There were rows of cannons on either side of the ship, with crates and casks and other armament scattered about. A few men wandered through the rows, doing something to the cannons, but many of them stopped when they caught sight of her and Lilith. There were quiet murmurs of “captain” and a few nods, but there were many more lingering eyes.
The hair on the back of Zelda’s neck stood up. The stares of these men were nothing like the men above – these felt predatory, dangerous, and it was suddenly very obvious to her that she was a woman in man’s clothing.
Zelda nearly jumped at Lilith’s light touch on her lower back, but she eagerly followed when she gently pressed her forward, escorting her towards the back of the room. She stood as tall as she could, but as they entered the tight walkway between the cannons, she had to fight the urge to shrink and bow her head. Though the men pressed up against cannons to give them room to pass, some didn’t give them nearly as much space as they could have, and Zelda felt a bit like she was walking into a snare.
The door shut firmly behind them as they entered the next section of the ship, which was empty, much to Zelda’s relief, and Lilith’s hand dropped from her back.
“That was the weaponry deck, as I’m sure you guessed. Below is our main cargo hold, where we keep goods, water casks, and livestock—”
“Stolen goods?”
Lilith gave her a look, though didn’t seem offended by her accusation. “I prefer relinquished, but yes. This is our second cargo hold,” she continued on, ignoring Zelda’s comment. “We keep our main stores of food here, and some other essentials. If you’re ever in need of something, you’ll most likely find it here.”
Lilith pressed her forward before Zelda could say anything, guiding them back towards the door they came from. As they entered the weaponry again, the men eyed her as they had minutes before, and the oily feeling in her stomach returned.
Zelda never thought the captain’s touch could be reassuring, as wary as she was of her. But Lilith’s hand was on her back again, and in the face of the men, that touch was calming, comforting even, in the moment, and Zelda had to stop herself from pressing closer to Lilith.
Back in the sun on the main deck, Zelda sighed and shivered despite the heat, feeling the lingering stares of the men still on her skin. She wanted to bask in the warmth a moment, let it erase the dark from the bowels of the ship, but Lilith pressed her towards the stairs next to the crew quarters.
They went up two sets to the top deck, bringing them to one of the highest points of the ship, the sea stretching out before them. Zelda couldn’t help but gasp a little at the sight – it was like she could see the whole world, the shimmering water unending and hypnotic. She drifted towards the railing almost unconsciously, feeling as though she could touch the horizon, if she just took one more step.
“This is the forecastle deck,” Lilith spoke quietly behind her, and Zelda blinked, forgetting she was there. “The best views are up here,” she continued, leaning her forearms against the railing next to Zelda. “I come up here often, just to take it all in. The dawn, especially. You feel like you’re Apollo himself, bringing the sun for the start of the new day.”
Zelda looked down Lilith, brow quirked. “You know Greek mythology?”
Lilith gave an amused little hum, still staring out at the sea. “You sound surprised I have a basic knowledge of the world.”
There was a long pause, only the sound of the wind and the snapping of the sails reaching them, and all of Zelda’s uncertainty, her fear, her anger, her trepidation, felt muted up here. Like it was blown away on the wind, and she was just on an adventure, far from her past life and all its troubles.
“The view on the tallest deck on the Azul wasn’t anywhere near this,” Zelda said, unsure why she was telling the captain. “I don’t know what’s different, on your ship. But it’s…”
“A bit of magic to it, yes?”
Boots sounded on the stairs behind them, and Zelda turned to see a tall, dark man walking up. She’d seen him when she’d first been captured, he’d been the one the captain had told to ready the lifeboats, and a bit of anxiety settled in Zelda’s stomach again.
“Captain,” the man spoke, and Lilith straightened, gesturing towards him.
“Zelda, this is my first mate, Ambrose. Ambrose, this is Ms. Spellman.”
The man – Ambrose – gave a polite nod of his head. “Ma’am.”
Zelda gave a small nod in return, surprised by the properness of his manners. Lilith stepped forward then and murmured something to him that Zelda didn’t catch. He nodded, then gave a small bow to Zelda before turning back down the steps. Lilith leaned back against the railing again, pointing to the other end of the ship.
“The tallest deck there is the observation deck, and below it with the ship’s wheel is the sterncastle deck. The view there isn’t half bad either, but there’s nothing quite like the bow of the ship.” She waved her hand then in a dismissive way. “I could go on and on about all the parts of my ship, but I’ll spare you. Should you be curious, however,” she said, and gave an affectionate pat to the railing, “there’s not a thing about her I couldn’t tell you.”
Zelda nodded but didn’t question, hoping that would placate the captain enough to keep her from rambling.
Lilith pushed off the railing then and took a few, slow steps forward. Zelda followed, not thinking much of it, and peered down at the main deck below. Men were congregating there; it looked as though the whole crew could be there on the deck, and Zelda looked around, wondering what was going on.
“Apologies in advance.”
Zelda’s stomach dropped. “What—”
Lilith grabbed her waist, tugging until Zelda’s back was pressed against her front. Zelda struggled and clawed at the captain’s arm, making her hiss when she caught flesh, but then Lilith wrapped her other arm around, pinning Zelda’s to her sides. She took a step forward, pressing Zelda tight between her and the railing. She was caught, trapped by the woman who was her enemy, as kind as she has been, and panic swelled her throat and her chest.
“Gather ‘round, boys!”
Lilith’s voice was loud in Zelda’s ear, her grip tight, and the railing was hard and unforgiving where it dug into her hips when she squirmed. The men turned and looked, and Zelda felt the blood rush to her cheeks.
“See this pretty young thing?”
The crowed murmured, some sounding confused, others excited, and the few whoops and whistles made Zelda want to scream.
“I’m sure you want her, hm?”
Lilith nearly purred, and the louder cheers and whistles made Zelda’s blood turn to ice.
“Then listen up, because I’m only going to say this once: she’s mine.”
The world came to a stuttering halt. Hers?
It crashed back into motion when the captain slid a hand up to her breast, squeezing it lightly. Zelda thrashed, though Lilith’s grip was too tight, and she tried to stomp on her feet regardless of the railing pinning her legs. Lilith tightened her hold, and she angled her head towards Zelda, her lips brushing her ear when she murmured, “Quiet, precious.”
Her voice was mild and even, saccharine almost, but Zelda fell still as though she’d growled. She’d been right about the woman, Lilith was a pirate through and through, concerned about nothing more than her next bit of gold and pleasure, and Zelda was her plaything, unable to stop her from doing whatever she wanted.
Lilith’s voice was loud again in her ear as she continued to address the crew. “If any of you animals touch her, paw at her, or even look at her wrong, you’ll be killed by my bare hands, and so slowly that by the end you’ll be begging me for the sweet relief of my sword in your heart.”
The murmurings of the crowd below suddenly died, and the ship became an eerie, uncomfortable quiet, Lilith’s chest pressing into her back with every breath as she allowed the silence to settle.
“You will treat her with the same respect you treat me. I hear otherwise, and you’ll be tied to a cannonball and thrown overboard before you can finish your Hail Mary.”
The tense quiet settled again, though the rushing heartbeat in Zelda’s ears nearly overpowered it. She stared down at the crew, all shuffling feet and adverted eyes, and Lilith’s voice loud in her ear again startled her.
“Don’t you have something better to do?”
The men rushed off, returning to their chores with their heads down, looking at anything but where she and the captain stood. Only Ambrose remained in his spot in the crowd, staring at them with a curious look on his face, before turning and making his way towards the stern.
Lilith had let go of her by now and stepped back, though Zelda barely noticed, her mind still trying to sluggishly catch up with events. Hers. She was the captain’s pet, claimed in front of all, and nothing more to do about it than to hope she stayed in a good mood for the remainder of their journey. Otherwise…
“Why don’t I take you back to my quarters? From there you can do what you’d like.” Lilith murmured behind her, and Zelda slowly turned to look at her.
She looked the same as ever, her hair and tunic ruffling the slight breeze as she stared at her as though nothing had happened.
As though she hadn’t just branded her as her whore.
Rage bubbled up in Zelda stomach, quickly melting the icy fear left in her veins, but she nodded curtly anyways. At least in her room she would be alone, away from the men, away from the captain, and she could curse, she could plot, she could avoid them all until they landed onshore in five weeks, or until the captain decided it was time to perform her duties.
Zelda shoved off the railing and made for the stairs, not bothering to wait for the captain, though she quickly caught up and walked a step behind her. They went across the main deck, and the men there jumped out of her way, bowing their heads and murmuring polite remarks as she passed; as nice as the courtesy was, that rage in her stomach was all consuming.
Lilith, with all her promises and assurances, was nothing more than a snake, but worst of all, Zelda had fallen for her lies. She’d started to believe the captain when she said she wouldn’t hurt her, like a fool, and had even began to consider the woman would respect her. She’d let her guard down, and now she was hers.
Zelda threw open the door to the captain’s quarters and strode in, Lilith following and closing the door behind her. The latch had barely clicked shut and Lilith turned when Zelda reached out on impulse and slapped the woman.
The sound was loud and Zelda’s hand burned, but she didn’t care. Lilith stumbled back a bit, surprised, and put a hand on her cheek. “Alright, I suppose I deserved that—”
Rage boiling over, Zelda didn’t hear. She slapped Lilith again, just as hard, but then Lilith was grabbing her wrists, spinning her around until she was pressed against the door and her wrists pinned above her head.
“I’ll take the one for groping you, but I won’t be struck again for saving your life.”
“Saving me?” Zelda scoffed, and tried to wiggle in Lilith’s grip. “I’m the captain’s whore now thanks to you.”
Lilith tightened her grip, eyes burning, and pressed impossibly closer to Zelda. “You may be, but now you’re amongst pirates who won’t lay a finger on you. I claimed you out there, and do you know what pirates do to the captain’s whore?” She spit out the word and leaned closer until their lips were mere inches away. “Absolutely nothing.”
Zelda seethed and bucked in Lilith’s grasp, tugging at her wrists until the captain let go and took two steps back. She glared at Lilith, absolutely hating that she could see her logic – there had been no stares, no leers, no prickle at the back of her neck when she’d walked past the men. It was clear that the men obeyed their captain, and by branding her as off limits, she’d be safe on the ship.
From the men, at least.
Lilith was staring at her, expression unreadable, and Zelda pushed off the door and went further into the room, not wanting her back to a wall. “You shouldn’t have groped me.”
She turned to look at Lilith, who did nod and blink in acknowledgement. “You’re right. I apologize.”
She should’ve just ignored the captain, but there was a question niggling at the back of her mind, and she couldn’t stop it from slipping out. “Why did you?”
“Grope you?” Lilith asked, and gave a small smirk. “I thought it would make my point clear, in the moment.”
Zelda sneered. “No, why did you save me?” she clarified, and her anger flared again. “Why bother with it? Why not just leave me to the mercies of your men? It would certainly be easier – give your men a new toy to play with while saving you from having to look after me.”
Anger filled Lilith’s eyes to match her own, and she took a slow step towards Zelda. “I would never leave a woman at the mercy of the lusts of men.” She spoke slowly, her voice low, and looking more serious than Zelda had ever seen her. “While I hope that my crew wouldn’t do such a thing, I know they would never disobey their captain.”
“You wouldn’t leave me at their mercies, but you’ll put me at yours?”
Lilith raised an eyebrow and took another slow step towards Zelda. “Like it or not, as you are a guest on this ship and I her captain, you are at my mercy. How you choose to define that is up to you.”
And with that, Lilith turned on her heel and walked out the door.
Zelda stood rooted to the spot, stomach turning. She had half a mind to follow Lilith and demand that she explain herself further, tell her to stop the cryptic behaviors and the contradictions and just tell her what to expect as her guest, as she so put it, but a sudden wave of exhaustion washed over her. Going out and confronting Lilith in front of her crew, who saw her as the captain’s toy, was an overwhelming thought, and one she didn’t want to deal with just now.
She sat on the edge of the bed, taking the knife out of her sleeve so she could easily scrub her hands over her face. Was it really just this time yesterday she was first boarding the Demoness? It felt like a lifetime ago, and yet a part of her still felt.
It was early in the day, barely into the afternoon, but Zelda couldn’t bring herself to care. Her exhaustion seemed to run bone deep, and her anger and confusion with the captain only added to it. Sliding the knife under her pillow like she had before, she laid down and closed her eyes, focusing on the slight rocking of the boat beneath her.
Perhaps this time she’d wake at home, or back on the Azul, or, she thought with a wave of melancholy washed over her, anywhere from here.

Description: Aloth’s courting a Watcher of a clerical persuasion, yet by his own admission doesn’t particularly care for her god. A brief scene expanding on some in-game dialogue.
Why you should read it: Even if you don’t enjoy watching Aloth squirm his way through some awkward dialogue, the story is fairly sweet and quite short.
Kitchen Shift

The galley of a ship was always a busy place; most of the time that Irrena was on duty, it felt like she was doing at least six or seven different things at once. Peel the vegetables and cut up the pineapple, attend to the stove, add spices, pile the dishes for setting the table… Hel, cooking dinner could have kept three people busy! But when it came right down to it, she couldn’t say she really minded; in her book, doing a thing too many always beat doing a thing too few, just as having company always beat being by herself.

Description: Pallegina saves Irrena’s day by offering a helping hand.
Why you should read it: This story gives the spotlight to Irrena and Pallegina. It contains some cooking, good intentions, and general Vailian camaderie, so what’s not to like?
Tie Breakers (working title)
Quotation:
”We made some progress over the winter and spring, getting most of the repairs done,” Edér said over a tankard of ale. ”Bearn’s been the real problem. Sometimes I think he’ll turn around, but other times… well, you just can’t tell what he’s thinking in that head of his.” He took a large sip of his drink and wiped the foam off his moustache. ”But what of you, though? You haven’t gotten into any mischief without me, have you?”
Askildr shrugged. ”We saw Rekke home.”
”Aye, and a right adventure ’twas!” Iselmyr added. ”Them coxfithers would nae even let us in at foremaist, an’ whin they did they hud all o’ us except for Rekke an’ the Watcher locked in a cell, an’ we had to break oot.”
”Yeah, that sounds eventful, all right,” Edér said with a chuckle. ”So now it’s just the two of you, then?”
”The three of us,” Askildr said.
”That’s, uh, that’s what I meant.”
”And Uslaq.”
Aloth rolled his eyes. ”And the cats and the dog and the entire crew...”
”Yeah,” Edér said, ”though sometimes you can be kind of alone, even in a crowd.”
Description: This started out as a ”Three times an argument was broken up” -story, exploring the relationship between the Watcher, Aloth and Iselmyr. Then Edér showed up, and it morphed into a ”Let’s visit Edér in Hasongo” -story. And then Aloth decided he was just about done with this whole arrangement, thank you very much, and I don’t really know what it turned into after that...
Why you should read it: Should I ever manage to wrestle this story into a readable shape, it ought to have some banter, friendship, and romance… plus the worst proposal ever. ;)

Text
The Letter.
The wind was brisk that late afternoon, as Captain Imraldera Starflower trod the deck towards the debarking Dauntless, recently returned from a covert mission.  She smiled and saluted the departing soldiers and crew, scanning the crowd for one target in particular.
Folding her arms and moving to the side, she smiled to herself.  The Maelstrom would often hire mercenaries, as did the Immortal Flames of Ul’dah.  This particular one was usually pretty easy to spot, and she scanned the heads about her for golden hair.  Then she tilted her head a bit, thinking, and reminded herself to also search for black hair. The Bard was a puzzle, but she owed him a lot.  She partially owed him for new life and career here in Limsa.  The Azim Steppes and the Ruby Sea were the only places she’d ever known before.  She’d fallen in love with the Eorzean Sea, she’d fallen in love with this Western world. She owed him for the whirlwind adventure that had brought her here, and, most of all, she owed him for her voice.
Getting impatient, she finally noticed her target, dark hair and all, shouldering a duffel and jauntily making his way down the gang plank.  She absentmindedly checked that she had her messenger bag once more then inhaled and called out, “Eanrin Farthestshore!”

The Miqo’te paused at the sound of his name, and the deep feminine voice that called it like a clarion across the pier. Following his ears, he spied the one red jacket among many; and his was not the only head that turned.  Many men and women actually stood at attention and saluted before they realized they were not the target of the Captain and returned to their duties.

The preoccupied look on his face was replaced by a wide grin, and the man began shouldering his way in her direction.  
“My Lady Starflower!” Eanrin bowed happily when he finally reached her.  “I haven’t seen you in months!  How are you faring?”
The Xaela smirked.  “Very well, thank you.  And yourself, Master Bard?  I see and smell you need a good shower, so spare me those details.”
Laughing the Miqo’te turned and grinned.  “Causing trouble, as always.”  He said flippantly, shifting his duffel to the other side as he turned to walk beside her down the dock.  “Someone has to babysit your men.  And the Grand Admiral always does pay well.  Though the timing was a bit off with this call… I’d really rather wished it could have been delayed.”  His eyes were troubled.
She frowned a bit and decided not to waste time.  “I have a letter for you.”  She announced as she stepped off to the side again a bit further out of the way.
Eanrin’s eyebrows rose in question.  “You weren’t demoted to postmaster while I was away?”  The smirk at the corner of his mouth made her want to either laugh or slap him.  Maybe both.
“Of course not.  I’m a Captain now, thank you very much.”  She stood, her hands on her hips as she jokingly tipped her head back and forth. “No, actually, this letter was delivered to you a day before you left, but we couldn’t get it to you in time.  Actually, the private who accepted the letter wasn’t quite sure what to do with it, due to the fact that it looked a… a little sinister in nature.  He brought it to me, but I was away on a command mission.”  She began digging in her messenger bag.
“Private Mrywdllyr reported receiving it from a young Elezen girl.  He was quite startled, as she arrived and departed quite abruptly.  Upon examining the letter, he wanted to chase after the girl, but, since he was on duty, he could not leave his post.”  She found the letter and watched the change in his face at the mention of an Elezen girl. He looked like he was sea sick and yet hoping the galley cook was serving dessert all at the same time. She held the parchment up to him, and he stood there for a moment, before slowly taking it from her.
She watched him frown further as he flipped it over and back, focusing on the wax “seal,” if you could call it that.  It was merely regular candle wax, with the imprint of a finger on it.  The part that really caught your attention was the now browning stains mixed in.
“Is that blood?”  Eanrin queried, looking even more apprehensive.  He stood there, holding the paper for about a full minute before he finally seemed to steel himself and he worked open the letter.
She watched his face darken as he read it. It didn’t take much time.  His breathing grew heavier and his yellow eye seemed to glow brighter.  Before much more could be done, he seemed to reign himself in.  “Thank you for bringing this to me.”  He said shortly, and bowed to Imraldera.  It was jittery and abrupt and entirely out of his normal character.  “If you would pardon me, Dera.”  He said, even as he made a sudden about-face and hastened back towards the sea.
She watched the denizens of the dock scatter before the dark cloud that was a Miqo’te.  Frowning in concern, she picked up her pace and followed in the direction he had gone. She followed the protesting crowds until she eventually found him standing next to a fountain, looking out to sea.  His right hand was clenched tight, the other held the letter which was flapping in the breeze.  His shoulders were hunched, and he stared down at the water below him.  She noted the gold that had been present at the tips of his hair had singed away to a dull gray.  Walking up to him quietly, she saw from his face that he was far away somewhere.  She settled herself down next to him until he came back.

Darkness. 
He was surrounded by it.  He couldn’t see anything.  His right eye burned most, his head just a little less.  Everything hurt.  Well, everything that he could feel did.  He couldn’t feel his legs. He was pretty sure he was bleeding internally.  He didn’t know where he was, and he was terrified.
He heard noises around him.  Something was prowling in the dark, the presence like a giant wild animal.  He heard it’s breathing.  It would pause from time to time and then return to its pacing.
“What to do with you, boy?”  The presence finally spoke.  He didn’t understand the words at first.  They seemed to translate themselves in his head.  He realized then that his unseen adversary was a dragon. The voice was deep and sounded as old as the rocks themselves.
“A mortal with your power, making it to your age without any alliances.”  The dragon muttered curiously.  “How did you slip through the cracks, little one?”  The thuds of footfalls around him continued.  It paused, as if listening.  “You’ve been running.  Running all your life.”
“You are a mess.”  The voice echoed across the void.  Fear spiked through Eanrin as he felt himself laid bare before this unseen being.  A light flared into existence, blinding him.  He flinched as he realized it was a great eye.  It swerved and bobbed as the dragon continued his pacing.  The eye never losing its focus on him.  
“Deep down, you have a good heart.”  The light disappeared and Eanrin found himself relieved.  “You bear scars.”  At this, many of the scars on his body seemed to glow in the dark.  “You’ve taken many a blow meant for others.  Some on behalf of others.  I can see you are very caring.  It’s exhibited in your display at the banquet.”  The voice growled, and the sound reverberated in the nothingness. “You are also very disrespectful. I am almost as old as Midgardsormr himself.  I demand respect.  I will not tolerate being dishonored in front of so many beings.  If the farmers had come to me directly, I could’ve saved face and you wouldn’t be bleeding out on your friend’s floor!”  It almost roared.
Eanrin writhed a bit, and with his eyes still closed and his hands over his ears he shouted.  “They couldn’t get an audience with you directly.  They are mere farmers.  You live in Sohm Al.  They would be lucky if they could’ve reached Tailfeather!”
The dragon growled, continuing to pace.  “Nevertheless.”  It snapped, two eyes resting their painful light upon the ailing Miqo’te.  “You reek of selfishness; self-loathing, self-pity, pride, and self-indulgence.”  The voice ruthlessly analyzed.  “You have blood on your hands.  You let your emotions rule you.  You are broken.  Hopeless.” The last brutal word rang through his ailing head.
 There is no hope.
 Eanrin curled in on himself, his hands still on his head.  Every word the dragon said was true.  He didn’t deserve to live.  He wanted to die.  To end the pain.
“Father.”  A new voice rang out.  “I will stand for him.”  The voice sounded breathless.  Two smaller lights appeared in the distance.
“Aethelbald.”  The ancient dragon said fondly.  “Eldest son. Why would you stand for this mortal?”
“I have witnessed many of his acts with mine own eyes.”  The younger voice rolled across the distance.  “I too have seen his heart and I declare it worthy of being saved.  I will stand for him.”
Visions of a bird in a tree watching him as he danced with Giselle’s little girl.  An afternoon he had spent playing with and then feeding what he thought had been a stray hound.  The hound, sitting among the crates in a bloody alley in the Brume.  A cat scurrying by as he brought a smile to Zui’s face when she couldn’t figure out how to repair a project.  Bounties and beasts he took care of on behalf of the Ishgardians.  Various faces of people whose moods and hearts were changed from listening the songs he wrote, bearing his heart.  Rayn and Mallo nestled together with him while he glared away a passing wolf when they went camping one night.  So many visions, and he wondered how many were from his heart and how many this dragon had actually seen.  His heart felt wrung out.  Despite all that he saw, he still knew his heart.
 There is no hope.
The bright lights drew nearer, and the young dragon turned and bowed his head to his father.  “I will stand for him.”  Aethelbald was clearly out of breath.  He extended a talon and placed it over Eanrin’s head.  The pain immediately lessened, though it didn’t lessen entirely.  
The eldest dragon’s voice rumbled across the black. The words were not translating now, and the two dragons alternated speaking. His very body vibrated with their discussion.  The youngest never moved his paw off his head.  The pain was returning.  Tears were running down his face.  He had a feeling he was dying.  Soon. Soon he could step into the welcome arms of oblivion.  Maybe Ama was waiting for him; the thought flitted faintly across his mind.  He didn’t even notice when the roaring stopped.  He was as all alone in the dark.
 There is no hope.  
 Was it his imagination, or was it getting hard to breathe?  “There’s always hope.”  The young dragon was back.  He sat down next to Eanrin.  The conviction in his voice was like iron.  “I believe in you.  Will you believe in yourself?”
Eanrin’s hands slid from his ears to his face.  “I just want to die.”  He cried.  “Let me die!”
With tears in his eyes, the dragon rested his head on the Miqo’te’s chest.  “Just as the clouds cannot extinguish the sun, darkness cannot quench the light. We are not bound to what we’ve done. The choice remains: to stay in the shadows or step into the light.”
“I’m not bound?”  Eanrin’s reply was hateful and a bit skeptic.  “Life is nothing but bondage and loneliness.  I am through with it.”
“What about Zui, Giselle, Sybelle, Merrin, Orion…” Aethelbald’s list ran on and on, capping off with “Mallo, and Rayn?”
Eanrin’s eyes closed in pain.  “There is no hope.”  He whispered. But deep down, he knew it wasn’t true. Didn’t want to believe it was true. The smallest part of him didn’t want to die.  It seemed to be shouting.  And in the silence, not even that small part could be ignored. And the dragon heard it too. And he looked long and hard at Eanrin.
Aethelbald sat back on his hind feet and extended a talon. “Let’s get you back up on your feet. I will help you.  You will never be alone. There is always hope.  Let me prove it to you.”
Eanrin extended his hand.  The dragon clasped it, and the world erupted into light.

The setting sun was in his eyes.  He blinked hard and focused back on where he was standing.  The paper crinkling in the wind, the salt in the air… he turned and saw Imraldera staring quietly at him.
“Welcome back.”  She smiled gently.
Shaking his head, he ran his hand down his face.  “Dera.”  He spoke as he sighed.
“Must’ve been something written in that letter to send you so far off.”  She turned and watched a seagull fly over.  “Are you okay?”
“Yes.  It was just a bit of correspondence with a girl here in Limsa.  I said something and she disagreed.”  He was picking the wax off the paper, warming it with his hands and forming it into a ball.
Imraldera’s eye twitched.  “You used the Maelstrom to correspond with a girl?”  Her voice was flat.  “Was she sending you a death threat?”  Her voice was a little wry.  Eanrin jumped a bit and turned around.
“It isn’t like that.  It was important.”  His voice was adamant.  “I promise, Dera.  You know I wouldn’t use the Maelstrom like that.”  He pulled out one of Zui’s pens from the duffel he’d let drop behind him. He tapped the pen and laid the slightly crinkled paper down on top of the rock wall.

Dera glanced down and caught the single sentence scratched viciously into the center of the page.  There is no hope.
She watched as he scratched “There is light. Be brave.”  Underneath it.  Then he signed his name with his typical flourish.
“Thank you for bringing the letter, Dera.”  He said quietly as he placed the ball of bloody wax in the center.
“Any time.” Dera replied.  “Is she going to be okay?”  The Xaela sat forward and watched as Eanrin began to fold the paper.
“I honestly don’t know.”  He frowned. “It looks pretty dire.  And I don’t know how to help her.”  His hands moved with practiced ease until he held a small Doman wishing crane in his hands.
Eanrin closed his eyes, holding the bird in his hands.  Then he opened them and took a deep breath and blew on the bird, his breath manifesting in blue, aetherial wisps.  They wrapped around the paper bird and consumed it in flames. When the flames died away, a small snowy dove stood and shook itself before leaping from his hands into the sky.
Dera watched with sparkling eyes as the bird flew back around to them.  She extended a finger and the bird landed on it. “You rarely use dragon magic.” She said quietly.
“Yes.  I don’t.”  He answered quietly.
Dera leaned her head down and kissed the bird on the forehead before releasing it back into the sky.
“How long will it last?”  She inquired.
“I don’t know.”  Eanrin replied.  They both watched the white bird fly until it was no more.  “It’s a prayer.”  Eanrin said finally.  “That someone will stand for her.”
Imraldera nodded.  Eanrin picked up his duffle.  “I need to get home.  I have to get to Ishgard as soon as possible.”
The burdens Eanrin shouldered sometimes broke Imraldera’s heart.  But she knew he wasn’t alone.  She put her hand on his shoulder and walked with him back to the airship landing.  “Why’d you choose Lavender Beds anyways?”  She joked. “What’s wrong with the Mist?”
“And be that close to you?”  Eanrin shot back.  She elbowed him in the side.  “I’d never be able to breathe properly again!”  He wheezed.
“Speaking of breathing properly… you really should take at least a little time to clean up before you travel.  Even if it’s an airship… with air... people might thank you for it.”  Dera grinned.
Eanrin’s shoulders slumped in mock defeat.  “Fine.  A shower. And how about dinner?  My treat!”

Royal Fortune is the most likely to cause a spectacle and the least likely to kill someone in a plunder/raid
Adventure Galley can electrocute people on contact; she is the most likely to maul someone during a plunder (usually by claw)
If you're up against Mary Celeste, chances are they won't find your body.... then they'll keep finding it washed ashore and strung up on palm trees
Whydah usually plays mission control, but if she's on the field stay away from her tentacles unless you want to be drowned
Despite her appearances, Golden Hind is best at hand to hand (especially with kicks). Her reflection also has the ability to move independently and affect the world to some degree, so stay out reflective surfaces' line(s) of sight so you don't get tag teamed
Sao Martinho has actual claws (Galley's is a sick as hell magic prosthetic made by Whydah) and her teeth are incredibly sharp; she isn't above biting and clawing if you manage to disarm her. The eyes on her wings are also functional, so it's incredibly hard, if not impossible to sneak up on her

A GURPS story
Day 1 - Our pirate adventure
The Rhumham
On the port of thier hometown the adventurers looked at each other and at the contract thier now retired captain had given them. Thier new captain, Jigar, holding one of the parchments in his one good hand was now glowing and standing proudly on what was his and friends newly acquired ship. Thoughts of future riches now closer to him than ever before!
Watching his new captain and long time friend's expression, Obu, slowly considers his own ambitions. As his lips and mouth starts to water Obu carefully begins to plan out his ships menu. Calculating in his mind the proper space, cost and availability of all the necessary items to fit his galley.
Today will be a day none of them will forget. And that was certainly felt by Rashid. Seeing his crewmates and friends expression, he couldn't help but notice how much excitement he too felt. His whole body clenched, flexing as if building energy. His mind racing, fantasizing about swinging crystal chandaliers, slides across set marble tables and eyes on foreign under skirts and ample bussoms.
Minutes go by as reality sits in and the group begins to discuss shares in the treasure and trades. Starts in gathering supplies and checking sternposts. And ensuring the ship is fit with the proper cordage and crew.
Naturally, Obu's brother Oshi would be coming. His play on swordsmanship on par with his lute could be useful and the ship would need more than three to man. Other allys for the journey are being considered and now as the days sun is to set and the long list of gettables are gotten celebration is in order.
Jagir's ear now ready to be sent on a wild ride down rumor lane. The crew heads to the where the drink is. Surely they'll be told where fame and fortune will be waiting for them. The Grizzly Shark, or the Great Sail is where they can swayed into sailing towards those seductive seas. Out of eye shot of the island and into waters unseen.
The crew meeting the captain there late after finishing thier work, they see Jigar already drunk. The former captain of thier ship and his old crew and townsmen cheering for him! And while songs are sung and the ale is flowing Obu and Rashid join them and the lot of the sully themselves properly on the eve of their adventure!
Then one sentence is shouted out that quiets the tavern! And as the silence after delivers the moment whete everyone waits on the answer from the captain: what will be the name of the ship now?! And while looking down into his mug filled with drink and smelling the pork cooking in the kitchen Jirgar confidently stands up and shouts: The Rhumham!! At that moment the tavern fills with laughter and cheers, as Jirgars friends can't help bust a gut many of the townsfolk cheer him on, roaring out and repeating the new name: Rhumham! Rhumham!! Rhumham!!
For hours they drank and danced and sang.
Classic songs and stories from thier home island being shared amongst each other until the crowd thins and many family folk and retirees calling it a night. And while the crew begins to set off themselves the captain, Jigar, in a drunken slurr declares: a flag! Quickly grabbing a quill and paper at near desk he begins to draw what would be the image of thier respected and feared flag. A pig and crossbones was decided, and as quickly as it was a mascot came to mind. As you could guess it, a pig was was needed. And before they leave port in the morrow to follow tradition.
With the retired Captain's help and some of the remaining men with the crew they all sets off to one of the closer farms. While Obu with a different intention heads to the ship to begin cooking preparations. As he slowly get to the ship the rest of the group makes it to a local farm and begin to quietly eye the muddy sty. Trying to pick the perfect pink pig and hog tie it to bring to the ship. One of the young men who joined up with them from the tavern helps Rashid rangle it and after a short struggle begin to steal the farm's animal and chrisen thier new home, the Rhumham with thier mascot!
Finally returning to thier masted home they meet up with Obu who becomes quickly disappointed that thier plump pink shipmate won't be an early breakfast. Together they decide to build a fenced area for Kevin Bacon, who's name was given by the still sullied Captain Jigar. And with most of the pieces in place they each look on over the deck of the ship. The clouds shimmering with orange yellows. A telling of a new beginning. And as the sun began to break through the horizon so did the first day of The Rhumham and crew's adventure. To be wealthy. To eat luxuriously. And to show boat and fight like no other as Pirates ever did!

San Diego is one of the best places in the world to be in the summer season whether you live here or are on a San Diego vacation. During the summer of 2019, things to do in San Diego with kids include some new events in addition to our usual, seasonal ones.
It’s by no means a complete list so if you have ideas, please leave them in the comments.
1. Watch an Outdoor Movie (Parks, Beach, or USS Midway)
This summer, make it a plan to watch one of our outdoor movies. The Summer Movies in the Park initiative began several years ago to draw attention to local parks. It’s been such a huge success that venues like the USS Midway are participating. What a unique opportunity to watch a movie from the deck of a famous aircraft carrier!
Other opportunities to watch a movie al fresco include a series shown on the Botanical Lawn by the San Diego Museum of Art that highlights themes incorporated into recent gallery installations.  
Watch a movie at the beach, hosted by Hotel Del Coronado. Sit on the sand or arrive early to secure a Del Beach chair rental. VIP Movie packages include s’mores, two Del Beach chairs and a Del Beach day bed (reserve in advance, $300).
2. Grab Tickets for the San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights
Bayside Summer Nights is the San Diego Symphony’s outdoor summer concert series (Summer Pops) at the Embarcadero Marina Park South. I can’t tell you enough how much I recommend this experience for the entire family as it’s one of our favorite summer activities in San Diego. You’ll see a beautiful sunset over the San Diego Bay during the concert while sipping wine or noshing on gourmet fare.
Concerts this year feature the likes of the B-52s, Chaka Khan, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and more. Grab your friends with kids and go for some fun family time (Or, go for date night). Tip: Bring glow sticks for the kids and check out their new ticket packages.
3. Explore the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park
La Jolla is home to a unique underwater park that is full of marine life. The San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park is outlined by seven sea caves, including Sunny Jim, the only sea cave in the West that is accessible by land (via the Cave Store on Coast Blvd.). Their history is an interesting one as some were used to smuggle booze during prohibition.
Take a guided snorkeling tour or rent a kayak at one of the vendors in La Jolla Shores.
4. See the La Jolla Leopard Sharks
La Jolla is home to the largest aggregation of leopard sharks in the world and it’s possible to enjoy them in even knee-deep water. Females come to incubate in warm waters near The Marine Room restaurant on La Jolla Shores beach.
Yes, they’re safe to be around. Numbers peak in July and August so plan to paddle out on SUP or kayak for a look. You can also snorkel and swim among them (minimize kicking to avoid scaring them away).
In honor of annual leopard shark season, Birch Aquarium offers multiple opportunities to snorkel with a Birch Aquarium naturalist.
5. Go Grunion Running
Yes! The grunion are running on various days all summer long. Grunion runs occur late at night so the activity suits tweens and teens best. Check the calendar and note when its open or closed season. Closed season means that there is no fishing allowed. Open season means you can actually catch them with a valid fishing license. Tip: It’s more fun with a headlamp to see the fish versus risking your phone over water or sand.
6. Sleep at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, USS Midway Museum, or Maritime Museum
Looking for a cool overnight thing to do in San Diego with kids this summer? Did you know that you can glamp with the animals at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park?
Themed overnights provide an opportunity to sleep (safely) near animals, enjoy educational programming, and participate in special close-up encounters. Don’t stress about having camping gear as it can be provided. The Roar and Snore Safari offers several tent options (including deluxe cabins with beds). 
Sleepover at the USS Midway Museum during youth, family, and movie night Overnight Adventures. You’ll dine like crew in the galley, sleep on sailor bunks, and participate in unique behind-the-scenes activities.
Join the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s Family Overnight on the Star of India on June 22.  
7. Ride Water Slides at Aquatica San Diego
San Diego’s seasonal water park is open on select dates from May 24–October 6. All ages have something to do at Aquatica San Diego between high-speed thrill rides and a special area for kids no taller than 48″. Reserve a private cabana or lounger, eat funnel cakes and California-inspired food (craft beer and frozen margaritas for 21+), and lounge in the lazy river. There are several ways to buy discount Aquatica San Diego tickets.

8. Look for Special Theme Park/Museum Experiences
So, maybe you already have an annual San Diego Zoo membership or a Balboa Park Explorer pass. Scour their websites to find additional programming to take advantage of as these attractions offer many, many edutainment opportunities led by experts in their fields.
Fleet Science Center has Saturday Science Club for kids on the second Saturday of each month.
Join Birch Aquarium for their long list of summer camps.
San Diego Museum of Natural History offers hikes, toddler story time and more. Check their family event calendar.
The list goes on.
9. Visit Balboa Park on Friday Nights
Be sure to check the Balboa Park event calendar for a Food Truck Fridays between May 31–September 27 where several museums stay open late, food trucks line Plaza de Panama, and musical performers entertain.   
10. Explore a New-to-You San Diego Museum
Why not visit a museum that you haven’t been to before? Many San Diego museums also offer extended summer hours. Visit the San Diego Museum Council’s list of museums and pick one that is new-to-you.
Don’t forget about Residents Free Tuesdays where San Diego residents receive free admission to a rotating list of Balboa Park museums on Tuesdays. And, if you expect to visit two or more museums or attractions within 30 days, consider the Build-Your-Own Go San Diego Card.
11. Hike Torrey Pines
The trails of Torrey Pines State Park are fantastic for those who want a bit of outdoor exercise but they are easily explored at a leisurely pace with kids. The views of the Pacific are fantastic and between the flora and fauna, there’s quite a bit of fun stuff to look at.
Food isn’t allowed but you could picnic on the beach or grab a sandwich at the Torrey Pines Gliderport afterward.
12. Ride a Surrey
Have you ever seen those multiple passenger bikes cruising down San Diego boardwalks? These surreys are available for the public to rent by the hour in front of the Hilton San Diego Resort (Mission Bay), Hotel Del Coronado, Loews Coronado Bay, and other resorts mostly via Action Sport Rentals. It’s another fantastic and fun way to explore.
13. Ride an Aquacycle on Mission Bay
Speaking of fun rentals, wouldn’t the kids get a kick out of riding an aquacycle with you on top of the water. They basically look like a giant floating tricycle. We haven’t done it, so it’s on our list for something to do in San Diego with kids this summer.
The same venues that offer water sports rentals also usually offer stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, Jet Skis and other fun things to do in the water. You may also try jetpacking. Carlsbad Lagoon rentals on Agua Hedionda lagoon also has aquacycles.
14. Fly a Kite
Kite flying is not a lost art and it’s a great free thing to do in San Diego with kids this summer. Find green space (there is plenty) around Mission Bay, South Carlsbad State Beach, Dog Beach (when not crowded), or a park near you to fly a kite.
REI has kites but you could always head to a kite store like Kite Flite in Seaport Village. Make sure that the kite is kid-friendly and that you are careful not to fly it over roads, over people or near power lines.
15. Go on a Picnic
Enjoy the great outdoors by going on a picnic with family and friends. Pack a lunch (or, heck, grab some awesome sandwiches for takeout) and head to a local park with picnic facilities, the beach, Balboa Park, or wherever you like to eat outside.  
Bundle this activity with kite flying and other outdoor fun to knock several to-do’s off your summer bucket list at once. My picnic to-do includes nabbing one of the green huts along Ellen Browning Scripps Park in La Jolla in time for the sunset.
16. Attend an Outdoor Concert
A number of cities throughout San Diego County (Del Mar, Carlsbad, Coronado, Santee, El Cajon, Mission Hills and more) offer summer outdoor concerts that are free to attend. There is usually plenty of space for the kids to run around, food for sale, raffle prizes and more.

17. Attend Raptor School (La Jolla, Ramona, and Alpine)
This is one of the more unique things to do in San Diego with kids this summer though it’s available year-round. Total Raptor eXperience offers owl encounters and falconry classes for all ages at the Torrey Pines Gliderport in La Jolla and their main facilities in Ramona.
We’ve taken a basic falconry class with Sky Falconry. They offer hawk walks, falconry classes, and more at their ranch in Alpine. These classes not only provide unique interactions with raptors but also teach you about how our actions impact amazing animals like these.
18. Support San Diego’s Only Rollerskating Rink
It’s been in business for over four decades and the historic building is threatened by closure. So, get out there and roller skate with the family at Skateworld. It’s great exercise, gets kids off their electronics and its super fun. They’re offering rollerskating camps, too.
19. Take an Electric Bike Tour
This idea will suit the teens in your life (typically ages 16 and older) but an electric bike tour is an excellent way to see San Diego. This summer, I’d like to take the SoCal Riviera Tour of La Jolla and Mount Soledad with San Diego Fly Rides. I see these riders cruising my neighborhood on occasion and it looks like so much fun. Plus, there is way less pedaling (if you want) on an electric bike.
20. Visit a California Mission
This tip is especially relevant when kids are studying missions in 4th grade. But, it’s just as easy to pop a baby in a carrier for a nice walk around a new place.
San Diego County is home to the largest of the 21 California missions, Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside. It is open daily for self-guided tours of the onsite museum and grounds, but do check their calendar for a list of events including behind-the-scenes tours, retreats, cooking classes, and workshops.
Mission San Diego de Alcala, which overlooks Old Town San Diego, was California’s first mission. Visitors can explore the grounds, attend mass or sit for quiet reflection in the gardens. An audio tour is available.
Or, it is incredibly easy to take an Amtrak train to San Juan Capistrano. The mission there is within a very short walk of the station and such a cool day trip.
21. Tour the Stuart Collection
Take kids on somewhat of a scavenger hunt to find the various sculptures and art installations in the Stuart Collection, a public art display that is sprinkled throughout UC San Diego. Stop into one of the casual campus restaurants that are open during summer for lunch or a snack. Read more about the Stuart Collection.
22. Have Afternoon Tea
If the kids are feeling fidgety in the late afternoon and you’re not feeling like an outdoor activity, how about a proper afternoon tea with scones, tea sandwiches, and sweets? Choices include:

23. Attend a Luau
The Catamaran is hosting its annual summer luaus on the beach on Tuesdays and Fridays. The buffet menu includes a long list of Hawaiian favorites such as Kalua Roast Pig. Enjoy live music, lei making, and more without the long flight.
24. Take a Surfing Lesson
San Diego is home to some truly awesome summer surf camps that you can sign up for on a weekly basis or book for a half-day. They’re great for kids ages 5 and above (sometimes, even a bit younger) and adults can join in the fun, too. This is something I always encourage families who are visiting San Diego to look into. Try Surf Diva Surf School in La Jolla or San Diego Surfing School in Pacific Beach.
25. Tour the San Diego Bay
Get out on the water with the family with one of these suggestions:
Take a Seal Tour in the amphibious bus-boat that goes from land to water in a snap
Drive your own mini speedboat on a tour with Speedboat Adventures
How about Flagship Cruises harbor cruise?
Take the Coronado ferry between downtown and Coronado
Zoom around the bay in the high-speed Patriot Jet Boat
26. Pick a Pier
When was the last time you took a walk on one of our piers? Whether it’s Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach Pier, or Oceanside Pier, they’re fabulous places for ocean views and sunsets. Did you know that Oceanside Pier is the longest wooden pier on the West Coast?
27. Plan a San Diego Staycation
I’m a huge fan of being a tourist at home. Visit a part of San Diego that you’ve never actually explored before. Popular staycation hotels include:

Omni La Costa Resort and Spa
Hotel Del Coronado
Rancho Valencia
Cape Rey Carlsbad
Pier South
28. Go to the Beach
While this is an obvious thing to do in San Diego with kids this summer, it has to be mentioned. Top beach picks include Coronado Municipal Beach, Law Street beach, La Jolla Shores beach, Del Mar beach, and Moonlight beach for family-friendly amenities.
Go luxe at the beach by renting a cabana at Del Beach in front of the Hotel Del Coronado. You’ll love the margaritas while the kids will love the shade and food. You don’t have to be a hotel guest to book one either.
29. Join a Beach Cleanup
Check the calendars for I Love a Clean San Diego and San Diego Surfrider Foundation for opportunities to join an organized beach cleanup. Summer equals more people on our beaches, and inevitably more trash.
30. Do Volunteer Work at Home and Elsewhere
San Diego is full of opportunities for kids to get involved in community service. 
San Diego Humane Society needs kids (and adults) to make various DIY projects like no-sew blankets for dogs, pom-poms for cats and more at home.
The San Diego Food Bank offers a myriad of ways for small groups and individuals to volunteer.
Feeding San Diego offers opportunities for ages 6 and older to fill backpacks for kids in need, sort food and more.

Lonely Planet began life in 1973 when Tony and Maureen Wheeler made the trip of a lifetime – a honeymoon from London to Australia, across Europe and overland through Asia – with nothing but a car, a few dollars in their pockets and a sense of adventure. Perhaps a lesser known fact is that Tony Wheeler also created the Lonely Planet logo and turned his hand to illustration in the early days. We delved into the archives and caught up with Tony to learn more about the legacy of the logo.
Tell us about the first guidebook…
Our proposed book was too big for Tomato Press’ small printing press in Melbourne, but they put us in touch with David Bisset who had a larger press in his basement and agreed to print 1500 copies. I drew maps of the countries we’d visited, crudely drew illustrations, and we pasted up the typeset galleys to produce a book which came out to precisely 96 pages.
We needed two more things – a title for the book and a name for our fledgling publishing house. The title was easy; the book was about travelling across Asia on a tight budget, so we called it Across Asia on the Cheap.
Where did the name Lonely Planet come from?
Finding a name for our publishing business was less straightforward. We ran through dozens of names over bowls of spaghetti and glasses of cheap red wine in a small Italian restaurant on Oxford Street, London before inspiration hit. I’d been humming the opening line from the Matthew Moore song Space Captain, sung by Joe Cocker in the classic rock and roll tour film Mad Dogs & Englishmen. ‘Once while travelling across the sky,’ I sang, ‘this lonely planet caught my eye.’
‘No,’ said Maureen, ‘you’ve got the words wrong. As usual. It’s lovely planet.’
She was right, I always got the words wrong, but lonely planet sounded much nicer. I sometimes wished we’d come up with a more business-like, more serious name, but it’s certainly a name people don’t forget.
When did you draw the logo?
I sketched it for Across Asia on the Cheap in 1973, the same year Lonely Planet was founded. It was the first Lonely Planet title ever published. The book was hand stapled and trimmed in a basement flat in Sydney. I also drew the sketchy illustrations that feature on the front cover.
How has the logo changed since you first sketched it?
In 1975 I redid the logo with Letraset, a typeface that I thought looked good, and it really hasn’t changed that much over all the subsequent years. I’m proud of how it’s retained its original identity!
When you sketched the Lonely Planet logo did you have any idea would last so long?
No, I had no idea the logo would survive so long! It’s a bit like the Nike Swoosh which I think somebody sketched in a couple of minutes and was paid $20 for it.
If you could change anything about the logo, what would it be?
Nothing! I think at some point they did pay somebody real money to improve it, they might have made the circle a bit thicker or something, but no real change.
Do you still get a buzz seeing your logo lined up on bookshelves across the globe?
Absolutely. Who wouldn’t?!
Do you still sketch while travelling?
No, I take far too many photographs but I do keep a diary every day and carry a little notebook for when I can’t note something down on a phone or iPad. I love taking out-the-window aerial photographs, some of which can be seen here. I keep thinking, however, that sketching would be a good thing. The last time I can remember actually sketching something was because we stayed in the very flash Al Maha Desert Resort an hour or so out of Dubai about 15 years ago; our room came with an easel and a bunch of coloured pencils. You can see the sketch below.

Chapter 5: The City of Blades
Our intrepid adventurers have so far escaped drow captivity, witnessed the razing of a city by a powerful demon lord, travelled for days through endless caverns, losing and finding friends along the way, and are now sailing towards Gracklstugh, the City of Blades…
In the boat:
The cunning gnome JimJar
The thoughtful wizard Sariel
The brave dwarf scout Eldeth
Your pal Adrik the bard
The kindly cleric Miri
Poor Bree the halfling, lifeless but for her freaky, twitching arm
Stool, shivering in fear and clinging to
Akta, the sensitive but deadly tiefling rogue
Hemeth Ironkeel, a duergar rescued from Sloobludop,  
And an empty seat where your fearless dragonborn friend Torinn should be.
Alone on The Darklake
The rescued duergar claimed that Gracklstugh, his people’s city, was 5 days sail away by boat. The group quizzed him cynically about his intentions, his history, and the nature of the city, demanding to know whether he could secure their safety.
Hemeth explained that Gracklstugh is an industrial city, its forges kept alive from the fire of a red dragon called Themberchaud. To the group’s concern, he also mentioned slavery and hard labour in the metalworks. 
Most of the city is off-limits to non-duergar, and the city is policed by The Stone Guard, an elite private militia who have pledged to protect the city and its leader, the DeepKing Horgar Steelshadow. Indebeted to you, it seemed all he wanted was to buy you a hearty round of drinks.
Suspicious, but hopeful that they could find some way to the surface, and keen to head in the other direction from the newly awoken demon, the group sailed on.
The boat narrowly avoided rockfalls and dangerous underwater obstacles, thanks to some mysterious but highly effective transmissions from Bree.  
Miri used powerful magic to speak directly to her, learning that she was hiding in a forest on another plane of existence, a savage wilderness filled with fiends and monsters that whispered the name Demogorgon. She was able to make out a three-towered fortress in the distance, topped with fanged skulls.
True to form, Akta gave her no advice or reassurance whatsoever, but was satisfied by the idea that Bree could somehow warn the group of possible dangers ahead.

Hemeth Ironkeel…
Four Doomed Dwarves
Working in shifts for 3 days and nights, Adrik’s magical campsites were extremely convenient, providing much needed water and recuperation.
Nevertheless, a senseless attack from a mad aquatic troll was fended off, thanks to JimJar’s fierce don’t-mess-with-me powers, Akta’s blinding shuriken, and a vicious mockery of words from Adrik. Hemeth also threw his javelin into the lake needlessly.
But Hemeth was to prove a worthy comrade on the following day, when he skewered an annoying bat-like stirge that was hassling the boat.
On the fourth day, another boat appeared on the lake. Eldeth was quick to recognise them as her dwarven compatriots, and they were in high spirits!  And dwarves they certainly were. Never before had the group seen such dazzling, lustrous red-haired beards flowing from the chins of these four women. 
The dwarves explained that they had left their hometown of Gauntlgrym, on a mission from King Bruenor to establish new trade contracts with the cities of the Underdark. 
So far, they had been unsuccessful. Eldeth, their scout, had been captured in Velkynvelve. The Duergar merchants of Gracklstugh seemed loopy and had kicked them out - although they had heard of a Dragonborn working there. And now Sloobludop had been destroyed? 
They didn’t believe your hallucinations about demons (”they’re just folk takes!”) but intended now to head for Menzoberranzan, the City of Spiders, before eventually returning to the surface via Blingdenstone.
They invited Eldeth to join them, but after some alarming hand-signals from Bree, she was convinced that should she do so, she would never make it back to the surface alive. And after all, she exclaimed, “these brave folk are my kin now!” They wished each other good luck.
An Ominous Arrival
The next morning, Adrik used his powers to confirm that Torinn was indeed somewhere in Gracklstugh. The air became warmer and thicker, and soon the sounds of clanging iron and steel were ringing in the wind.
A large city, set back from the shore, was ahead. On JimJar’s suggestion, the group decided to pretend to be traders from the Zhentarim Clan. The boat was abandoned by a “welcome” pier and the group set out on foot, Akta carrying Bree’s body with Stool’s help.
Approaching a massive bronze gate, six heavily armoured duergar suddenly appeared from behind. A harsh voice hissed from a nearby crossbow slit: “State your names and business!”
Despite some audacious attempts at diplomacy from Miri, Adrik and Hemeth, the guard was not convinced by any of their brazen lies. However, a cryptic message from Bree led JimJar to offer a dagger as a bribe. Despite her lack of discretion - “ooh, isn’t this dagger nice!” - the plan worked and the guard nervously accepted the offer. 
“Go to the Darklake Docks and find a duergar named Werz Saltbaron. Give it to him. Tell him that they are gifts for Gorglak. He’ll know. And I will check with Werz at the end of my shift! If it isn’t there, I will have you all arrested.”
He vanished, and Bree confirmed that some duergar have the ability of temporary invisibility.  
With a groan of heavy machinery, the inner gates opened and a gust of hot, ash and smoke-filled wind rushed in. Compared to the quiet of the Darklake, the roar of furnaces and the sound of hammers striking anvils was overwhelming. They had arrived in Gracklstugh.

The City of Blades…
Reunited in Room Eight
The group’s journey to the docks was not as straightforward as they had hoped. 
At the ramshackle Darklake Brewery, Hemeth learned that another Clan had taken over the Ironkeel business. He steeled for a fight but the group managed to stand him down. Bree alerted the team that the newly brewing kegs of ale were likely poisoned.
Inside Ghollbrorn’s Lair, an underground inn, they saw all kinds of races but few duergar. A serving lad explained that this was one of the two inns in the city that would serve “outlanders,” and rolled his eyes at the idea of days and nights. Here in Gracklstugh, time is measured in “rotations” of hourglass oil lamps.    
Another of Bree’s messages from the beyond was decrypted by JimJar, who set out with Akta to find Torinn in room eight. Meanwhile, Hemeth bought a round of ale, declaring a toast! Optimistically considering his debts repaid, and feeling conscious surrounded by non-duergar, he downed his ale and left abruptly. 
Before they could consider this, Torinn arrived, to great acclaim!

Dragons, clerics and other complications
The group were eager to hear how Torinn had come to be here in Gracklstugh. Similarly, he was overjoyed to once more be together with his companions!
Torinn explained that he had been kidnapped by Duergar who had forced him to work in the city’s forges, hammering out spiked rocks for its catapult defences. Fortunately, he had met The Keepers of the Flame, a group of powerful psychic clerics who had recognised him as a dragonborn.
The Keepers work for Gracklstugh’s leader, DeepKing Steelshadow, helping him crush any potential mutinies. They also manage Themberchaud, the great red dragon who keeps the city’s smelters ablaze. 
Every morning, The Keepers meet Torinn outside his lodgings at Ghollbrorn’s Lair, telling him if he is needed for work. And if so, they escort him to the dragon’s cavern and back, each timing crossing some kind of deep trench.
Poignantly, Torinn described how he had become very fond of the dragon, working as his assistant (though under constant watch from The Keepers). Torinn had learned that Themberchaud was tragically doomed to be slain before he grew too strong. The Keepers have been secretly nurturing another dragon egg. 
Shocked to see that Bree was no longer entirely alive, Torinn suggested that the Keepers might be powerful enough to revive her. 
Noticing that the oil lamps were burning down, the group set out for the Docks.
Assassins, interrupted
The streets became crowded as the group entered The Blade Bazaar, an intriguing market of treasures, weapons and armour. They counted ten stalls in total. 
Another message from Bree was interpreted: someone here might help the group to leave the city. But all this bustle was considered a distraction, and they marched on, soon feeling the cold air off the lake. 
A number of large galleys, and dozens of smaller sail craft were moored on the jetties. It was eerily quiet, but for a lone duergar at the end of a pier. Bree warned the group of assassins nearby, and Adrik indeed heard footsteps, but nothing concrete could be ascertained. 
So, very carefully, Miri called out to him, in such a delicate tone that the figure knew at once that she could be trusted. He started down the pier.
But before conversation could begin, two duergar clad in black cloaks appeared, cutting him off. They pulled out glowing blades and went to attack! 
He cried to the group desperately for help, and JimJar jolted the assassins long enough for him to confirm that he was indeed Werz Saltbaron. The group rushed to his aid. Eldeth held back, taking care of Bree.
Adrik stormed in with his mace, Sariel unleashed a cloud of daggers, and after Werz had been stabbed in the gut, Torinn and Miri stabilised him with spells of healing. Akta deftly seized one of the assailants by the neck, and soon the two would-be murderers were both unconscious. 
At the sound of approaching Stone Guard, Werz persuaded the group to flee, though not after Adrik had (rather uncharitably) stolen his wallet. Demanding that he quickly explain himself, the group learned that this was some kind of inter-clan quarrel, as both his and another clan were trading with merchants in Blingdenstone.
Werz was brought to the nearby Shattered Spire Inn, where Adrik paid for a private booth, and where the next move (and what food to order) was thoughtfully considered. And with Eldeth and JimJar now firmly part of the group, the BASTAM Adventurers were gloriously renamed to MajeStab.. (!)
