“He is lucky to have survived the attack. The wounds that were inflicted upon him were quite deep. I am still not quite certain how he lived.”

The voices murmured from the other room, and Dimitri was just conscious enough to comprehend what was being said as he drifted on a cloud of pain and some form of drug that he was given while the Medics and Chirurgeons worked to stop the bleeding.

“It was the most barbarous attack Ser.” A second voice said. “I have been out to see where it happened. I am still in shock that this was done by teenagers of our beloved Empire. I cannot fathom where they learned to be so savage.”

“The others that were with him? Did they survive? I did not see that in your report.” Dimitri could feel his stomach churn, there was a sickness there one had never felt before. Whether it was the potions he had been given or the words he was starting to understand it didn’t matter to him. The only thing that did matter was that something had happened, something he didn’t quite remember but he had been part of it.

“I did not want to go into details in the report Ser. I was saving that for the team cleaning the site. It was quite difficult to take in all of it, there was so much blood. We are not quite certain how many were involved or if the boy we saw running was one of the teenagers involved. What we do know is their camp had been completely looted of everything they had with them. If it wasn’t nailed down it is gone now. We are going to need to place guards around the perimeter from here on out. I doubt they will come back, but just in case. We cannot have this happen again.” There was a clear of the man’s throat, it was obvious to Dimitri even in his haze that he was struggling to talk about all he had seen, likely not Garlean or one that had a weak stomach since he recoiled from describing the scene of whatever it was they spoke of.

“This is quite the mess.” a woman said, She sounded like she had an Ishgardian accent from what Dimitri could tell, it didn’t sound like Lucia Junius but this voice still carried an air of importance to it. “Has anyone reached out to the Forum contact yet? I doubt that the Sharlayans are going to be thrilled to hear about the death of three of their envoy members and a fourth lying in recovery. What about the others that came with them? Have we checked in on them and offered them comfort? These are people's friends and family gentlemen. I know emotions run shallow here in Garlemald but they do not on the rest of the Twelve forsaken Star.”

“Death” the word hit Dimitri and he felt himself reel. Before he knew it he had turned his head and the sound of retching was heard throughout the building and it didn’t stop until he felt like every organ in his body had passed through his mouth onto the cold and snowy floor. It was all there then Saewara’s screams, Zehex’s shouts, the clattering of steel, and Azane’s vacant eyes looking up at him as he tried to fight off Lucas’s friends. He could even feel the blades as they sliced through skin and muscle, the heat of the blood that poured from the ones on his lower back. Then there was blackness, and in the distance the sounds of voices talking about making an example of Weland so the outsiders knew who was in control. This was an attack of malice, of pure hatred and there was no other explanation. The hardest part for Dimitri as he began to lose consciousness again was the knowledge that his friends were gone, and it was because of him that they had died to begin with.

The Sharlyan had no idea how long he had been out when his eyes finally opened again, and there at the end of the bed as the blurriness cleared was his Father in heavy Forum Robes standing vigil over his bed. “Water.” It was the only word he could think of at first, his mouth was dry and his tongue felt like sandpaper on top of it.

“Medic, he is awake.” Leopold called out to whomever was listening, there was compassion on his face as he glanced back to Dimitri “They will be here with it soon. You have been asleep for the better part of four days. We almost lost you, and infection had started to set in. They believe the knife or dagger you were stabbed with was either rusted or exposed to something that made it toxic to your system. The Alchemists were able to produce an adequate cure for the malady but you will need to take the potion for a sennight or two. The wound will heal, and we are allowed to take you back to Old Sharlayan as soon as you feel well enough to travel.”

By the time Leopold finished speaking, the Medic had entered the room with a canteen of water for him to drink from. “Here you are, slow sips, please do not gulp from this.” The man said, he too was an Elezen with an Ishgardian accent, Dimitri noted and somewhere in his mind he found it interesting that none of the Garleans were here to receive him when he awoke. A near casualty of their own people.

“I wish I wouldn’t have,” Dimitri said in a hoarse voice, his head lifting to receive the first sips of water he remembered having in what felt like forever to him, small beads of it even slid down the slide of his mouth on to the gown that he wore leaving a wet spot. “I already know they are gone, I heard it when I was awake the last time.” The Medic frowned, but then so did Leopold. “It should have been me, not them. I am the one that put them in danger.” He stopped again to take a few more sips of water, his throat was sore which made talking harder than he expected, and he had this feeling of guilt washing over him.

“You have been through something very traumatic Dimitri, something not of our culture or our way of life. When we get you back to Old Sharlayan we will find you someone to talk with about your feelings.” Leave it to Leopold to pass something this important off to someone else. He had a knack for being there for everyone else except when his own family needed him and this moment only proved that more as the older Elezen shifted from foot to foot careful not to disturb anything about his stately appearance.

“Talking will not bring them back Father.” The emotions were rising in him, and the sick feeling began to grip his stomach as he talked. “I trust the boy, Lucas, was his name. He had stayed with us for weeks! I thought he was.” his voice trailed off and he shook his head looking towards the healer for a few more sips of water which he was provided quickly.

“You behaved like a diplomat and a Sharlayan, Dimitri. You took in a boy you saw struggling and you put your faith in him. This is what life is made of Son. It is trial and error. You did not know that he would cause all of this, you believed him to be in need of your help and a kind soul. You are not at fault for that.” Leopold was stern in his words, ever the Forum member and leader that he was known to be.

“They knew Father. Zehex, Weland, and even Saewara did not trust him. We were barely speaking because of the fact I let him stay with us and I did it for Azane. She thought he was just a young man affected by all that had happened here. I chose her side over theirs. I made the choice to off him Sanctuary. They are dead, Father, because I could not resist the puppy dog eyes that Azane gave me when she asked me for help.” Dimitri’s voice had grown so loud by the end that others were looking in the door to his makeshift room and the Healer beside him had placed his hand on his shoulder to keep him in place.

“Ser, your wounds. I need you to lie still so you do not tear the stitches. You may be out of danger, but torn stitches never bode well. You could end up bleeding out.” Dimitri found himself gazing towards the healer, and despite his desire to yell something the man’s eyes settled him back onto his bed, though he looked like he could jump from it at any moment.

“I could care less if I bleed out.” He murmured, likely loud enough that only the healer could have heard him. “I have lost everything dear to me out of my own foolishness. Just leave me here, both of you, let me die and join them. I have no purpose left on this Star. Not without them.”

Leopold had begun to speak again, but the Healer raised his hand and shook his head “When you feel stronger Ser, they would like to take a statement from you of what happened, at least how you remembered it. I will pass along the name Lucas, though I am certain that is a rather common name in this shit hole of a place.” Then he left, the swish of healer robes announcing his exit and right behind him he heard Leopold’s heavy footsteps as well. As soon as Dimitri knew he was alone, he finally lost it. His beautiful sea-green eyes filled with tears that slid down his face.

but fr, the gods are just sooooo much more fleshed out in ToA. they're more complex, and have these layers to them that pjo and hoo just Did Not convey (and really, only conveyed those things post publication of ToA, which came with the tools on how to decode the gods and read between the lines).

and i'm not even talking about Apollo here. he is by far the most fleshed out god we have because he's the pov character, but i also mean all 12 of the other olympians - they're just so juicy!!

like okay, sure, in pjo and hoo we get glimpses that Dionysus may care more than he lets on, but ToA CONFIRMS this, but not in an 'in your face' way - but in the 'Dionysus picks at Apollo like a little brother would' way, and in that FIRST interaction between Apollo and Dionysus, we can SEE what their relationship was like!!

Hermes is another VERY layered god, ESPECIALLY with pjo's context. but that context ONLY gains its own importance BECAUSE of the story ToA gives us - we would NOT have 'resigned to fate' Hermes without it. or embittered at his favorite brother Hermes. we love this Hermes eheheheheheheh

Artemis also gains more character, and is no longer just the stoic cool badass #Girlboss she's largely presented as - she's scared, she fears for Apollo, so much so she SPLITS. she comes RUNNING to help him in TTT as soon as she could, giving her a softer side, while simultaneously expands on her previous appearances and allowing us to see how she is unconsciously enabling the abuse Apollo's experienced. LAYERS !! !! !!

Do you know how crazy it is to be a non-American 40 year old conscious human being and intentionally use racist & violent American imagery in a fic for an incredibly minuscule character played by a Latino man of color who’s the child of political refugees? Do you know how crazy it is to also have a reader-insert acknowledge the confederate flag, and still fuck the person that hangs it in their space? Like do y’all see how fucking crazy that shit is? It’s insane just typing that out. When I said y’all move like the feds in this fandom preaching about inclusion & community in one breath while doing the very thing that jeopardizes and harms those that are excluded from said “community”, I meant that shit, and I was right.

As much as we like to deny it, writers have their own motivations and intentions for creating and sharing the projects that they do. If you as a writer actively choose to add racist themes in your writing to intentionally make a character problematic, it’s a reflection of who you are, because you didn’t need to do that and yet you still decided to do it anyway. Would you as black American want to read a fic where the reader insert fucks a racist? No. Then why do you as a white person, especially a non-American, think it’s okay to do the same? Would you fuck a racist? By the way some of y’all keep dismissing the intentions, that’s up for debate because a lot of y’all would rather fetishize the shit out of that man than have a lick of common sense.
