If you are involved in climate activism and if you work in town planning and purchasing, or anything similar, I am begging you to please, *please* start thinking about disabled folk, elderly folk and parents with young kids when you are talking about walking and biking to places.
Cycles are absolutely inherently more pedestrian-friendly than cars, but they are still perfectly capable of injuring or even killing pedestrians, particularly frailer people, small people, and pets.
A lot of pedestrians, especially elderly and disabled people, have developed this instinctive terror of cycles and cyclists purely because poor planning so often shoves cycles into pedestrian spaces that aren’t actually even that ideal for pedestrians, and people who already have difficulties - elderly and disabled people, dog walkers, parents of small children - in those spaces start accumulating experiences of injury or even a succession of near-misses, which are perfectly capable of producing trauma even if physical injury is avoided.
And that only plays into the hands of polluters and governments who are in their pockets as well as increasing the marginalisation of already-marginalised people.
I can’t blame cyclists who are too afraid to ride cycles on the roads along with motor traffic. It’s terrifying and incredibly unsafe. Cycle paths, Cycle lanes, and other specific spaces for cyclists are absolutely essential, with as little need to share space with motor traffic *or* pedestrians as possible. Even in wide city boulevards, laid-out cycle paths and spaces are essential. They literally only need paint! And let electric scooters back on them in the UK too.
If you are providing any form of public rentable cycles, please, *please* accommodate elderly, frailer and disabled people too. We tend to be the ones who are in the most need of alternatives to get places, but traditional bikes are inaccessible to frailer people and most people with balance and fatigue issues. Please buy a selection of bikes, including adult-size tricycles, scooters with seats, and bikes with seats and tow options for small children. Parents exist, and are mostly desperately in need of transport as they have small humans with short legs and limited energy, and most prams and buggies are incompatible with traditional cycles.
We know so damn well how right-wing governments and corporations benefit from setting us against each other, and how adept they are at using marginalised people to distract the majority of exploited workers from the larger issues said governments are doing poorly or not tackling at all.
Disabled and elderly people, and parents of small children, are very vulnerable to climate change and the issues it causes. We are not the enemies of the climate movement; but we equally need to be *included* in it and *accommodated* by it.
If you are only looking for solutions that work for abled, healthy young adults, you are, frankly, not doing your job effectively. Listen to disabled people, older people, and parents. If you are doing large-scale planning work, invite us into the planning process *early*, not at the end when any changes will seem too burdensome and expensive to make, and, honestly, pay us for our time and expertise.
Oh, and if you make or sell bikes or electric bikes, sell more accessible options like adult trikes and ones with child seats and towing options too, please. And don’t charge enormously more for them than standard bikes. Financing options would be good too. Most disabled people can’t afford to run a car, and your bikes are often more expensive than that, if you offer them at all.

I thought of something that I think is very funny for post-established-relationship-in-wartime Eragon and Arya but I'm unsure about posting it because it is very thinly veiled spicy joke.
Iunno if yall want it or not, I just had a mixed amused-disturbed-amused epiphany about elf strength and the danger a cunning linguist could be in.

actually you know what don't talk to me if you've never been embarrassed to be a pedestrian in your own city.
blah blah it's only a 30 minute walk. okay where are the fucking sidewalks then?? I'm not walking on the road with cars going 60-70 km/h in a 40 zone are you insane? and you can't walk on private property that's been drilled into us since we were children. so explain where are we supposed to walk???
okay let's bike there. first we're assuming it's not winter because the cities give fuck all about cyclists and pile snow into the bike lanes. second do you know what bike lanes look like in most of Canada and the USA? they're painted lines on the road, there is no barrier between cyclists and cars. it's so laughably unsafe.
fine let's take public transit. you know that half hour walk we were talking about earlier? yeah that's gonna be at least 45 minutes on the bus, not including waiting for it. that's if they even have a public transit system in the first place.
we're driving because that's the feasible, easy option. it's the one that's the safest. I guarantee you, pick any major city in Canada or the USA and go away from downtown or into its suburbs, you will be the only pedestrian for miles around. suburbia is a place for cars and pavement, concrete, and six lanes of traffic. it's not built for people.

The Best News of Last Week
1. A branch of the flu family tree has died and won't be included in future US vaccines
Tumblr media
A type of flu virus that used to sicken people every year hasn't been spotted anywhere on Earth since March 2020. As such, experts have advised that the apparently extinct viruses be removed from next year's flu vaccines.
The now-extinct viruses were a branch of the influenza B family tree known as the Yamagata lineage. Scientists first reported the apparent disappearance of Yamagata viruses in 2021.
2. Hospitals must obtain written consent for pelvic and similar exams, the federal government says
Tumblr media
Hospitals must obtain written informed consent from patients before subjecting them to pelvic exams and exams of other sensitive areas — especially if an exam will be done while the patient is unconscious, the federal government said Monday.
New guidance from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services now requires consent for breast, pelvic, prostate and rectal exams for “educational and training purposes” performed by medical students, nurse practitioners or physician assistants.
3. Germany approves new law that will allow adults to carry up to 25 grams of cannabis for their own consumption and store up to 50 grams at home.
Tumblr media
Germany's upper house, the Bundesrat, cleared the way to partially legalize cannabis on Friday. Adults aged 18 and over will be allowed to carry up to 25 grams of cannabis for their own consumption.
4. Tick-killing pill shows promising results in human trial | Should it pan out, the pill would be a new weapon against Lyme disease.
Tumblr media
Tarsus Pharmaceuticals is developing a pill for humans that could provide protection against the tick-borne disease for several weeks at a time. In February, the Irvine, California–based biotech company announced results from a small, early-stage trial showing that 24 hours after taking the drug, it can kill ticks on people, with the effects lasting for up to 30 days.
5. Thailand moves to legalise same-sex marriage
Tumblr media
Thailand has taken a historic step closer to marriage equality after the lower house passed a bill giving legal recognition to same-sex marriage.
It still needs approval from the Senate and royal endorsement to become law but it is widely expected to happen by the end of 2024, making Thailand the only South East Asian country to recognise same-sex unions.
6. French Revolution: Cyclists Now Outnumber Motorists In Paris
Tumblr media
Official measurements have found that Paris is rapidly becoming a city of transportation cyclists. In the suburbs, where public transit is less dense, transport by car was found to be the main form of mobility. But for journeys from the outskirts of Paris to the center, the number of cyclists now far exceeds the number of motorists, a huge change from just five years ago.
7. 'Miracle' operation reverses blindness in three-year-old girl giving her 'promising' future
Tumblr media
A three year old with a genetic condition that causes blindness is doing incredibly well after unique pioneering operation to restore her sight.
The UK is the only country performing keyhole eye surgery to inject healthy copies of a gene into sufferers’ eyes. It is being used to reverse blindness in children born with a rare condition which means they can only distinguish between light and dark. And it has given little Khadijah Chaudhry, born with Leber congenital amaurosis-4, a chance at seeing properly again.

I have to know now who else were your 10 year old you gender envies, if any
I would say that gender envy for me ~10 was more about male role models than guys I wanted to look like. This was an age when I was figuring out my brand of masculinity. These were my earliest blorbos that I really internalized. I have behavioral quirks today that I can trace back to each of the below.
Tumblr media
1) The big two: Granada Sherlock Holmes and Watson. Watson was brave, caring, and clever in his own right, despite making mistakes. (I do want David Burke's Watson outfit from The Solitary Cyclist, tho.) Holmes was all about his elegant gremlin energy, plus his own brand of kindness.
I used to daydream about being Holmes' nephew, being sent to board with him and Watson for a summer. I would annoy my IRL friends with the Dancing Men cipher.
2) Book!Siegfried Farnon (I did not see the 1980s All Creatures Great & Small show until very recently). Clever and kind, despite some very big flaws. I used to picture him a bit like David Niven.
Probably the first blorbo I projected on. It's ironic that as a kid, the flaw of his that I identified most with was his short temper (I had problems regulating my emotions). Now as a much, MUCH chiller adult, I see some of myself in his brand of ADHD and self-contradictions, lmao.
Tumblr media
3) Mr. Badger, Wind in the Willows. Curmudgeon, but kind. Always prepared to lend a hand and open up his home, despite generally wanting to be left alone. Also a lot of daydreaming here, had a fox Willowsona and everything who was a pastiche of Badger and my other blorbos at the time.
As a trans man who "always knew" it's interesting to reflect upon my earliest attempts at processing gender feelings via fictional characters. Most of what I valued in masculinity then has changed little now, and while I am not immune to toxic forms of masculinity, I feel lucky that kindness was such a common thread to all these guys.

When driving in and around residential areas or anywhere there might be pedestrians, always drive extra carefully, be more mindful of following the speed limit, be extra careful about going around corners or approaching anywhere with pedestrian crossing especially if there's low visibility due to things like bushes and trees. In short, don't be afraid to drive like a little old grandparent anywhere residential where there might be pedestrians.
Speed limits are lower in residential areas for a reason, and that's because it reduces pedestrian injuries and deaths when you drive more carefully when people might be around and crossing the street. You never know when a small child chasing a ball or a pet who broke loose from the house might run into the street, and your abiding the speed limit and driving mindfully could be the difference between life and death in these scenarios. Even if a fully grown adult is just walking or biking to the store they deserve to do so safely without being injured or killed by a speeding car whipping around corners without looking where they're going.
This all also applies to other motorized forms of transportation, such as electric scooters, as you're also at risk of hitting and injuring or even killing pedestrians and cyclists.

On the 31st of May, 2014, two twelve-year-old girls, Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser, lured their friend, Payton Leutner, into the woods in the quiet suburb of Waukesha, Wisconsin. Once there, they brutally stabbed her nineteen times. The motive was their belief in Slender Man, a fictional supernatural character born from an online meme.
Slender Man originated from a 2009 internet contest on the website Something Awful, where users were challenged to create creepy images. Eric Knudsen, using the pseudonym Victor Surge, contributed a black-and-white image of a tall, faceless figure with tentacle-like appendages, lurking behind children.
This character, quickly dubbed Slender Man, went viral, spawning countless stories, videos, and fan art that fueled its mythos. The character was often depicted as a sinister entity that stalked, abducted, or traumatized children, becoming a staple in online horror communities.
Weier and Geyser had become deeply engrossed in the Slender Man mythos and believed that committing a murder would make them Slender Man’s proxies and allow them to live with him in his mansion in the woods. This delusion drove them to plan and execute their attack on Leutner, whom they considered a necessary sacrifice.
On that fateful day, the girls played a game of hide-and-seek in a nearby forest, where they turned on Leutner and carried out the stabbing. Miraculously, Leutner survived the attack, managing to crawl to a nearby road where she was discovered by a passing cyclist who called for help. She was rushed to the hospital and, despite the severity of her injuries, eventually made a full recovery.
The aftermath of the stabbing led to a highly publicized legal battle. Both Weier and Geyser were charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide. Given the severity of their crime, they were tried as adults, a decision that sparked debate about how to handle juveniles in the legal system, especially those with mental health issues.
During the trial, it was revealed that Geyser suffered from schizophrenia, a condition that likely contributed to her inability to distinguish between reality and fantasy. In 2017, Weier was sentenced to 25 years in a mental health institution, while Geyser received a maximum sentence of 40 years in a mental hospital.

I headcanon that if War arc!Thorfinn were a teenager in the 21st century he'd definetly be a motor cyclist.
Like he's already reckless with his life during his time in the viking band, and if he were the equivalent of a viking in 2024 is basically a gang member, which doesn't necessarily equate to motorcyclist, but the intersection in the Venn diagram is significant enough.
Tumblr media
My man would unironically do the akira motorbycicle thing and think he looks so cool
As an adult he'd be so embarassed and never use bycicles again

there was a weekend recently where i was feeling particularly overwhelmed with yknow the state of the world and all that and at one point an adult i know was saying something about how people have preconceived notions about what type of person wears spandex when really he wears spandex because he's a cyclist and he was like "it's beautiful! there's so much diversity in the spandex community!" and it really made me stop for a moment and realize that there really is so much beauty in this world

Bruce Wayne has bradycardia
So I'm re-reading the first Justice League tpb [the one from the early aughts, just after Infinite Crisis] and there's this little tidbit that Clark drops about Bruce:
Tumblr media
Bruce's normal resting heart rate is less than 40 bpm. 40 bpm is excited for him; it's a noticeable change. Now, either our writer did not bother doing a bit of simple research, or this says kind of a fucking lot about Bruce and the kind of training and restraint he's learned over the years.
A 5-second google search tells me that the 'official' average resting heart rate for an adult human being is anywhere from 60-100 bpm, with the real numbers [according to Harvard Health] being more like 55-85 bpm. This is a resting heart rate. This is the average range of how fast your heart should be beating when everything is normal and chill.
Bruce Wayne's is noticeably less than that. Now, this isn't unheard of; another 5-second google search gives me the Wikipedia page for bradycardia - which honestly I'd never heard of before today - and the note that the lowest heart rate ever recorded on a healthy human being is 26 bpm. A pro cyclist is recorded as having a resting heart rate of 28 bpm. Given Bruce is one of the top martial artists and overall athletes in the world, I 100% believe his resting rate could well be that slow but even so.
Holy heart rates, Batman

An important example of how adultism harms adults is that riding a bike is rarely respected as a legitimate mode of transportation and bikes are often treated as "children's toys" rather than real vehicles. There's a general assumption that the only reason an adult would ride a bike as their unironic primary mode of transportation is that they can't afford a car. And street designs prioritizing drivers over cyclists and pedestrians makes everyone less safe.

The Sign of Four: In Quest of a Solution
You could find the back issues of most papers just by visiting a local library. Today, the British Newspaper Archive will, for a monthly subscription, allow you to look at a whole slew of vintage papers, including The Illustrated Police News for all your Victorian "true crime" reportage.
As mentioned before, a four-wheeler was a four-wheeled carriage with a driving seat on the top front and a luggage rack on the top; they costed more than the hansoms.
Doyle isn't very good with coming up with convincing Indian names, is he? Singh is the name used by a baptised male Sikh (Kaur is the female equivalent) i.e. a turban-wearing, dagger carrying one. Mahomet is a version of Mohammed.
The gas lights of London weren't hugely bright compared with modern street lights; you'd be able to find your way, but there's probably a decent chance you'd step in horse exhaust if you weren't careful.
The Lyceum Theatre, located on Wellington Street, dates back to 1765, but the current building is from 1834, rebuilt after a fire. It contains a balcony over the dress circle, a unique theatre.
GhostApple on Tumblr pointed out that Bram Stoker was the manager at that theatre at the time SIGN was released. The theatre at the time was run by Henry Irving and Ellen Terry, two of the biggest stars of their days, becoming Sir Henry and Dame Ellen later in life. Stoker based Dracula on Irving, but sadly Irving never actually played the Count on stage.
After a further rebuild, time as a ballroom, a demoliton threat and two closures, the Lyceum reopened in 1996 and is a Grade II* listed building, the second highest grade. Since 1999, it is the London home of The Lion King.
The normal garb of a coachman would be a top hat and a heavy double-breasted overcoat; they would be driving their vehicle in a vast array of weather conditions, sometimes on the same day as anyone who has lived in Britain can tell you.
The coach is going rather fast at this point, possibly dangerously so. The Offences against the Person Act 1861 created an offence of "causing bodily harm by wanton or furious driving"; which could mean that if a horse-drawn vehicle hit another vehicle or a person, the driver could get up to two years in prison. The offence remains on the books, being used against horse-drawn carriage drivers (still a thing, particularly in the Traveller community), motorists when not on a road or public land and cyclists, as the Road Traffic Act 1988 is not available in these cases - it is a Crown Court-only offence. In 2017, a cyclist riding at speed in East London with no front brakes hit and killed a woman; the jury found him not guilty of manslaughter, but convicted him of this offence, with the result he got a 18-month sentence.
Tiger attacks were very common in British India; tigers are known to attack humans when feeling threatened (human encroachment on their territory is a big problem)), injuries prevent them from going after other prey or they mistake a human for something else, or if one is riding a bike, their chase instinct may kick in. 33,247 people were killed by tigers between 1876 and 1912. In 2022, the Indian government recorded 112 tiger-caused deaths, up from 59 in 2021. Some tigers have ended up killing over 100 people before being shot dead.
For those having a go at Watson for shooting at a tiger cub, we don't know how old or how big the tiger cub was. A newborn tiger maybe less than 10 pounds and look adorable, but a ten month male could easily be over 100 pounds and looks rather like a full-grown adult. Especially in the dark.
This said, humans are a good deal worse than tigers. The British cleared vast amounts of their habitat for the timber to build their railways. Hunting tigers for "sport" had been a common practice for the Indian nobility and the British ruling classes liked doing it just as much, bringing modern firearms along. Remember Dr. Sterndale from DEVI? There's a chance Watson might have gone hunting himself, sadly.
The tiger hunting got worse post-independence as improved air travel made it easier for game hunters to get to India. The Indian government banned tiger hunting in 1972 and the Bengal tiger population is slowly recovering. The size of reserves have not kept up with the population and so some tigers have gone into human areas for food, usually livestock but sometimes humans. If a tiger starts killing people and attempts to tranquilise it fail, then lethal force will be authorised. In 2022, T-104, a three-year-old dubbed the "man-eater of Champaran", killed nine people before he was shot dead by the police, who conducted their search riding elephants.
The "Surrey side" refers to the southern bank of the river, the other being the "Middlesex side" referring to the now defunct county. Those terms remain in use for the Boat Races; with the Middlesex side being on the right as the crews row upstream. The two "stations" have various advantages and disadvantages; Middlesex helps at the start end, Surrey in the middle.
Vauxhall Bridge was in rather a bad shape by this point and would be replaced in 1906, five years late due to various construction and design issues. The modern bridge is notable for having the very distinctive headquarters of the Secret Intelligence Service next to its southern end.
"Hindoo" was a contemporary spelling of Hindu, today considered derogatory.
"Sahib" is the Indian equivalent of "sir" or "master"; "Mem-Sahib" is the female version. The Indians used it when speaking to white people (or about them, possibly sarcastically) and the British officers would use it with their Indian counterparts. It is less common now, but still widely used in the Indian Army and about people in positions of power.
"Khitmutgar" was a term for a male butler or underservant who would set the table for dinner etc.; during the Bengal Presidency, these would typically as opposed to Hindus.

Jensen Ackles | Nashville Convention, Panel Highlights (December 18, 2022)
Tumblr media
(x)
Q for Jensen. Did he want Dean to die for closure? Jensen immediately replies that he didn’t want Dean to go out the way he did. Death on SPN is not a closure. In his mind they haven’t closed yet. #SPNNash (x)
Fave milestone birthday? Jensen liked the 40th. He felt like he needed to be an adult now, but the celebrations Danneel and friends planned were awesome. His 21th birthday was memorable too. He got 21 shots of assorted liquor. He went to puke in between #SPNNash (x)
#SPNNash #SPNNashville On his 21st birthday, Jensen got 21 shots of assorted liquor and drank them all.  “I couldn’t do 3 shots now without being face down on the floor.” (x)
Dean saying “SON OF A BITCH” after bela stole his lottery ticket was unscripted (x)
Jensen also improvised as Soldier Boy and Beau Arlen. He’s going to become the actor you can never fully write for but may get great stuff out of. #SPNNash (x)
Jensen: i get texts from the show runner in the editing bay like ‘did you mean to do this?’ and i’m like ‘i dunno!’ (x)
Jensen: “I’ve started jogging outside again. idk why. so stupid” (x)
Jensen started jogging outside again. He got into the middle line trying to start a new playlist. The cyclist coming his way told him to stay in his lane and Dean came out to yell back at him. #SPNNash (x)
some old guy on a bike yelled at jensen to stay in his lane when he was running and dean winchester enTERED HIS BODY AND HE WENT “LETS GO” he was ready to kill grandpa (x)
If you could throw cold spaghetti at anyone? Jensen: At Richard Speight. It would be very funny. (x)
Jensen: i took my kids to see a harry styles concert and im not a fan or anything… well i am NOW but. I just want to see what its like to do what he does night after night (x)
Jensen asked about what he would write: i would write about the anxiety that fills me up about this writing assignment (x)
But it would be interesting to explore how anxiety and coping with it evolved from generations, because Jensen didn’t have words to even describe the feelings back when he grew up. (x)
How do they feel about other people interpreting things about their characters than what they say, i.e. 15x18. Jensen explains that it’s not up to him to judge others. If his craft inspires us or makes us feel, that’s the whole point. Everybody’s different. (x)
Last question. Do they trade off with siblings or see it with their kids? Jensen doesn’t have any bartering with his siblings going on. (x)

For the Sherlock and Co. Ask Game:
🌟 ♥ 💎
Hi I'm so sorry I didn't answer this sooner, my life was on fire this week. Thank you for the prompts, these are all such good ones too!
🌟: I have got to go with Sherlock as my favorite main character. Sherlock & Co. has such an endearing adaption of Sherlock Holmes as a character-- Thomas the Tank Engine plasters? High fives? Brilliant and yet clearly human? I love him. If he has a hundred fans I am one of them. If he has one fan it is me. If he has no fans I am dead.
❤️: Hmm... this totally not a headcanon because it's essentially canon (although it has been awhile since I re-listened to the Gloria Scott episodes so correct me if I'm remembering wrong), but I am going to take this opportunity to talk about it anyways because I surprised myself! I wasn't expecting to be so fond of the idea of Sherlock & Victor as really close mates in school or roommates, etc. Now I fully recognize that this is surely left over from my time in the BBC Sherlock fandom, which often treats Victor Trevor as a traumatic relationship for Sherlock (both because of what happened to him in the show, and the copious fan content about Victor as an adult). That's neither here nor there, just a different Victor Trevor from a different Sherlock Holmes adaption. That's all to say that I just really like that S&Co. Sherlock had a healthy friendship in school such that he was worried about irreparably damaging that friendship while solving this case. It's very refreshing.
💎: Ahh I LOVE the entire episode the end of The Solitary Cyclist Part 2. Seeing Dr. Jonk Watson M.D. have his moment to shine was so exciting, and Sherlock is such a darling at the end when he congratulates Watson on his stellar work. It's absolutely precious and I totally re-listen to it when I need a pick-me-up.
