Ooooouuuggghhh, that line hit me hard, Bruce and Alfred watching over baby Dick Grayson in the early days, when he's still so young and so angry, that it comes from love, but he has so little experience wrangling that rage yet. And how much must this twist at Alfred's heart? To see another young boy--one with such dark black hair and bright blue eyes, one who clearly was so full of compassion and love, but has been cut to the bone by loss and rage has been filling his heart back up--and see what it does to Bruce. How much must this absolutely terrify Alfred, because he can see everything happening again, the withdrawal, the loss of heart, the obsession with fighting crime, that another young boy will be eaten by the same things that ate Bruce, the boy Alfred feels he couldn't keep from this life? How much must this worry Alfred, seeing Bruce hesitating on the ledge of possibly being a father to this young boy? Something that may have seemed so impossible before this, that Bruce would ever accept a family again, that he must feel torn between seeing a light at the end of the tunnel for these two boys, to find family and light and laughter with each other again, but also to worry that Bruce might reject that role out of fear, because he's closed himself off from ever losing family again? How much must this be devastating, watching another child lose the ability to just be a child, knowing it has to hurt Bruce was well, but also knowing that, if anyone can relate to this kid, it's someone who never had much experience being a child for the exact same reasons, and that that connection might be able to help more than anything else in the world? How much must it still haunt Alfred that Bruce never got to be a child, but also how much hope must there be in this moment, that all that grief and pain Bruce went through might be able to help save this second bright young child from the worst of it? How much hope must there be that Bruce's grief and pain might have a purpose that isn't just fighting villains on the street, but instead to be put towards helping Dick Grayson heal and that, in turn, will help Bruce heal, to have something that brings light and love to his life, instead of just more bullet wounds and broken knuckles? Because Alfred knows that letting Dick fight alongside Batman will tie him to that life forever, may even get him killed because he'll take chances he shouldn't, but maybe Bruce's experiences can help put caution into this child and that won't make all the pain and grief of the Waynes' loss worth it, but it will make it better.
