Had a lovely chat with Sarah Geogh this morning! We've been trying to arrange it for a while, but it's tricky for two adoptive Mums to find time between parenting, writing books and all the other chaotic things we have going on! Like me, Sarah has written children's books about adoption, so we had a lot to talk about! If you don't follow her already, check out her page @the_flamingofamily 馃Ι . #adoption #adoptioncommunityuk #adoptionuk #adoptionsupportuk #adoptionukcommunity #adoptionbuiltus #adoptiveparents #adoptivemums #adoptivemoms #adoptionbooks #adoptionresources #adoptionreadinglist #socialworkresources #socialworkreadinglist #writingcommunity #authorssupportingauthors #authorlife #childrensbooks #childrensbookauthors https://www.instagram.com/p/Coe3Ptytgta/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#Repost @adoption.books 路 路 路 路 I believe it is just as important for our transracially adopted kiddos to have experiences and resources that explicitly discuss adoption and transracial families, as it is to have experiences that implicitly ormalize" adoption (because although it's not normal and ideal, our kids need their reality validated). This could include books, movies, art, everyday conversation, therapy, interactions with other adopted and fostered children. it's important that they see and hear a wide variety of examples, instead of understanding adoption from just one narrative. We all need to know we are not alone! We should be intentional about the messages our kids hear (or maybe don't hear) about adoption. These four books written by Robert Munsch, all feature transracial families. The parents in each book are white and either have a child of colour, or children of various races. None of them address adoption at all. So they are great examples simply awesome picture books that broaden the world's definition of "family". Descriptions of each book in the comments. ***Disclaimer 2 of these books should be carefully evaluated before reading. This evaluation must include hearing a variety of adult adoptees share how they feel about being refered to as "gifts" or adoption related fees. In one, the children wrap themselves up as gifts on Chirstmas morning, and in another a daughter is mistaken for a doll, given a pricetag and dad can't leave the store until he pays. These are triggers for MANY adoptees. I do not take these references lightly.*** #robertmunsch #bookreviews #adoptionbooks #fostercarebooks #diversebooks #blackgirlmagic #adoption #fostercare #transracialadoption #transracialadoptee #adoptee #adultadoptee #adoptioniscomplicated #adoptionislove #adoptionishard #adoptionislove https://www.instagram.com/p/BrTNmf_BmBM/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1lytc7x7spp5q

Loving life at Aylesbury library, signing books after our book reading today. Lots of people wanted to talk to Zoe or ask her to sign books today, so that was lovely. I love that I get to share these fun events with my amazing daughter. 鉂わ笍 . #booksbooksbooks #books #library #libraries #read #readbooks #readmorebooks #reading #adoptionbooks #aylesbury #aylesburyparents #goals #careerchange #livingourbestlives #livingmybestlife #livingthedream #nationalstorytellingweek #familyliteracyweek https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn-K4rhs0NL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

We were quite excited to see this outside Aylesbury library when we got there for our book reading and signing event today! 馃槀馃摎 It is the crossover day between Family Literacy Week and National Storytelling Week (which is actually 9 days as a sort of nod to bookends - who knew authors were so hilarious? 馃槀), so this was a very appropriate day for a book reading event! Turnout was brilliant (you'll have to trust me on that as I didn't want to share photos with children's faces in who aren't my child, so the photos I share will be zoomed in and cropped!) and lots of lovely people came over to chat with us or buy books and have them signed. We had so much fun! 鉂わ笍 Thank you to Aylesbury Library for hosting us in your lovely library! . #booksbooksbooks #books #library #libraries #read #readbooks #readmorebooks #reading #adoptionbooks #aylesbury #aylesburyparents #goals #careerchange #livingourbestlives #livingthedream #nationalstorytellingweek #familyliteracyweek https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn-JhVTsL3B/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Honoured that Delly Duck has received such kind words from the amazing @annaandersonbooks in her recent article for Shepherd.com! I am a huge fan of her autobiographical book about her adoption, "Survival Without Roots," so am thrilled that she thinks Delly Duck is a valuable resource for adoptees growing up! 鉂わ笍 You can read the full article at https://shepherd.com/best-books/growing-up-adopted . #adoption #adoptionuk #adoptioncommunity #adoptioncommunityuk #ukadoptioncommunity #ukadoption #adoptionbooks #adoptionresources #adoptionstory #adoptionstories #survivalwithoutroots #socialwork #socialworkresources #socialworkreads #socialworktoolkit #socialworkreadinglist #adoptionreadinglist #adoptionprep https://www.instagram.com/p/CnPSBV3sC-b/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I was asked to write an article for Shepherd.com a few weeks ago about my top 5 book recommendations for adoptive parents, and it was published today! These autobiographies by adoptees and birth parents were a tough, emotional read at times, but they all changed me for the better, and I highly recommend these books to any adoptive parents. You can read the article to see why I recommend these books at https://shepherd.com/best-books/helping-adoptive-parents-be-better-parents . #bookreview #bookrecommendations #autobiography #memoir #adoptionbooks #adoptionreadinglist #adoptionresources #adoptionrealities #selfimprovement https://www.instagram.com/p/CmFI17OsJC8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It's a pretty awesome experience walking into a library with your child and seeing your book on a shelf! My son didn't really understand why I was so excited, because we have those books at home. 馃槀 . #authorlife #library #books #booksbooksbooks #booksbooksandmorebooks #bookish #bookishlife #childrensbooks #childrensbookauthor #libraryplus #libraries #booksthatteach #inclusivestories #inclusivebooks #inclusivebooksforkids #inclusivechildrensbooks #adoptionbook #adoptionbooks #fostercarereadinglist #adoptionreadinglist #adoptionresources #kinshipcarereadinglist #adoption #fostercare #kinshipcare #specialguardian @northantslibraries https://www.instagram.com/p/ClloMbhM98B/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

If you've been following me for a while, you'll know that I mostly read books by adoptees and birth parents, to try to help me to be a better adoptive parent. The latest adoptee story I have read is "Reuben's Story" by Cai and Joanna Clifton. After his adoption was finalised, 8 year old Cai asked his mother to create a story that he could share with his friends, to explain his story, and Joanna has used his words to create this book. Some details have been changed to protect identity, for safety reasons and also so that he can choose whether to tell people how much this story reflects his own. I thought I'd share it here in case it's helpful for any of you with older adopted children, who may be able to relate to the story. Cai also created some sweet illustrations that make the story more accessible to young readers. It's a short, powerful story, told in the voice of a child called Reuben. He talks about the events that led to him being taken into foster care. I think it's best for readers who are emotionally at least 6 years old, but do read it first (it's a good read for adoptive parents too) and check if you think your child is ready to read it. I think it could be a really valuable tool for therapeutic life story work with children who were adopted at an older age. It's new out this week, available on Amazon. #bookreview #bookrecommendation #memoir #adoptionbooks #adoptionreadinglist #socialworkreads #socialworkresources #storiesthatmatter #adoptiveparent #adopteestories #adopteestoriesmatter #adoptioncommunityuk #lifestorywork #therapeuticlifestorywork #adoption https://www.instagram.com/p/Chmoy_hIWQg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

If you've been following me for a while, you probably know that I often read books by adoptees and birth parents. I hope that trying to see things from adoptee and birth parent perspectives will help me to be a better adoptive parent. The latest book I have read by an adoptee is this one - "Are You My New Mum?" by Astrid Peerson, who is @authorandmore on Instagram. It's a short, emotional story, which is hard to put down. I read it in one sitting and then spent the next few days thinking about it. Astrid talks about her upbringing and what led to her being taken into foster care. Something I haven't seen in other books is the discussion of sibling contact in foster care and after adoption. Astrid's story talks about her relationships with her siblings, throughout their experiences. It's new out this month, available on Amazon. #bookreview #adoptionbooks #adoptionreadinglist #socialworkreads #socialworkresources #storiesthatmatter #adoptiveparent #adopteestories #adopteestoriesmatter #adoptioncommunityuk https://www.instagram.com/p/ChO097XMiCQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I have had so much fun this morning at Chestnuts Primary School this morning, talking to a fantastic group of year 5 and 6 children about being an author, for their school Aspirations Day. Had a blast with Zoe at the @adoptionconnects #Summer BBQ today. I manned the lending library where people could browse the books that Adoption Connects have for them to borrow, including the children's books I have written. Zoe enjoyed showing a few people her illustrations, but was mostly playing or on the bouncy castle 馃槉 I donated some of my books and also my favourite books by birth parents to the lending library. Check out these two accounts if you want to know more about the books by birth parents that I recommend: @twogoodmums - "Baby of Mine" is written by Laura. The podcast is also fab. @annaandersonbooks - "Survival without Roots" (Anna is adopted, is a birth mother and has adopted). #adoption #adoptionbooks #adoptionstory #adoptionsupport #adoptionuk #adoptioncommunity #adoptionjourney #socialwork #socialworkmatters #socialworker #socialworkersrock #lendinglibrary #illustrations #books #bookworm #rainbow #adopcion #pflegemama #pflegefamilie #familledaccueil https://www.instagram.com/p/CfjoRvAs5H3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
