ocean life and aquatic animals in general! i know the most about ornamental fish, but right now i am researching humboldt squid!
🦑 did you know that not only can they grow to be the size of a human, but that they are also known to actively hunt humans? this makes them super dangerous! there are many recorded attacks of humboldt squid packs attacking and devouring humans within minutes of them falling into the water! this is usually only while theyre feeding, though, so just stay away from the sea at night (yes, night! most squid species that i know of are nocturnal, including this one!) and you should be fine. they also react aggressively to flashing or bright lights. i guess you could say they get really hangry really fast ...
anyways! apologies for getting carried away! tagging @vintage-wanderers @franken-loser @frankenfartstein @hantu-burung and anyone else who wants to join! /nf ofc :3
cute thing im coming up with
this picrew of yourself and your current hyperfixation !!

rewatched black clover then saw your event and now i'm thinking how would Finral, Gauche and Leo introduce their fiance to their siblings. for the sake of this req let's say their siblings had no idea they were getting engaged (for Leo maybe his sis knew but brother didn't? idk i cant imagine neither of them knowing)
Ringtober Masterlist
Notes: sorry for the delay!
Warnings: n/a just fluff
Characters involved: Finral Roulacase, Gauche Adlai, Leopold Vermillion
Fem reader, you/yours
Finral Roulacase
His brother needs a minute.
Literally just points at Finral then you and goes you actually managed to convice her to fall for you?
Might make fun of Finral a bit but Finral can tell he's secretly happy for him.
Langris is more interested in the ring than you, he is glad to say that his brother has good taste in jewellery.
They end up discussing family matters after that and what's going to happen with certain pre established marriage agreements.
Overall Langris doesn't really care much, sure he's happy his brother found someone but it's kind of a 'meh' moment for him.
He isn't interested in getting to know you either, in his head you're like the Black Bulls—someone his brother likes but he doesn't particularly care for.
Don't expect to see much of him around either, although he does expect a wedding invite even if he might snark on about not attending.
He does in fact attend.
Gauche Adlai
His sister is so excited it's honestly adorable.
You've already met in the past since Gauche had to introduce the two most important girls in his life to each other, but she gets very excited at the prospect of having you as her future sister.
Gauche has to roam around with tissues because he keeps getting nosebleeds at the idea of the three of you living together like a happy lil family.
Once she finds our you're going to be her future sister in law his sister constantly asks about you when Gauche visits. He almost can't visit her without you because she sometimes seems sad and then Gauche feels very bad.
This one time the two of you got into a fight and she asked about you and told Gauche something along the lines of you better not take my sister away from me and to this day he does his best to never argue with you.
Overall your relationship is really sweet. Since Gauche is kind of like her father figure anyways you sort of become a maternal figure for her.
Leopold Vermillion
Fuegoleon is so genuinely surprised he doesn't even know how to react.
Their parents called all three children to the house for dinner which was surprising in itself, so when he sees you there he is pretty confused.
You're a close family friend, and ever since you were children it was sort of a given that Leo was yours and you were his. You two were just fated to be together.
But Fuegoleon presumed that his parents would at least give him of all people some forewarning before an engagement.
He ends up finding out that Leo actually proposed out of nowhere, you accepted and told both families a few days ago.
So why was Fuegoleon so late to the party?
His sister finds the entire situation funny and doesn't miss a beat before teasing Fuegoleon for being slow and not seeing the signs. Like how Leo suddenly decided to visit their grandfather (for a ring that was pre decided) the day he proposed.
Fuegoleon is honestly very pleased with the entire ordeal. You were always like a little sister to him anyways, but now that relationship is just solidified.
He does however tease Leo quite a bit about being a man and the responsibilities that come with marriage.
He's kind of surprised that Leo is going to be the first of the three of them to be married. That's Fuegoleon biggest concern rather than the sudden announcement.
Mereoleona definitely teases him about how their little brother has a better love life than him.

Please I’m begging for a Gauche Adlai x reader who is relatively strong but has trouble with self image and can easily get jealous they don’t mean to but sometimes it just happens (yes I’m kinda describing myself here) take your time if you wish I don’t really mind
Hiya~! I'll admit that Gauche is a bit of a puzzle still for me as a character. So this was a nice study of him. Hopefully you like it! It turned out into a kind of a love confession fic ^^'
Pairing: Gauche x gn!reader Genre: ...hurt-comfort??? There is a happy end Fanfic type: Oneshot Length: ~1.4k Contains: themes of jealousy and uncertainty, love confession, Gauche is hesitant too, doubts of being good enough, a happy end
Tumblr media
Gauche was someone who had never preferred the prime light, and did much better while watching people from the sides. And he did observe the entire squad, simply to see what kind of people they were; what kinds of people he’d be going out on missions with. What he should know, and what was irrelevant.
That was also when he became aware of your strength. And how you didn’t seem to exactly believe in your own strength. But also how... sometimes, when he’d do something nice, courteous, dutiful, to someone else in the squad, he could see you frowning at it. Maybe sometimes make a remark of it. About how he had been helping someone else. Specifically, someone else.
Most seemed to brush off the comments. The frowns and the gazes. But he had made a note of them.
He hadn’t said anything, but he had made a note of them.
Not that you knew him to see it, and note it. Because he very much appeared to be his stoic self. Someone who minded his own business.
Up until that one day, when it seemed to boil over for him. Seemingly over nothing.
Maybe it was over nothing. Or just him having watched it all from the sidelines for too long. Him developing suspicions about why it was such a big thing to you. When he did things for others. Even if it was something as small as pick up something from a shelf and hand it down. While he knew that he wasn’t the most personable, getting a noticeable reaction was... it made him think.
And that was why he grabbed you by the arm after that one mission, and gave you a look.
“What are you doing?” He sounded almost accusatory, but it was just the way he spoke. It was a tone of demanding an answer.
“Going home,” you replied, somewhat confused.
“That’s not what I meant.”
“Then what did you mean?”
He let go, and put his hands into his pockets, and tilted his head, as if to ask if you really didn’t know what he meant.
“Don’t give me that look and say what you mean,” you remarked, slightly irritated.
After all, it wasn’t like he had just offered a hand to Nero during the mission, which, yeah sure, was just helping a squad member out, but... It irritated you. Gnawed at you. While there was no real for you to be jealous, because you and Gauche were just squad mates too, but still! Did he have to? And then act all like he didn’t know why you were being a little irritated and snappy at him.
“Why are you acting like that?” He asked.
Oh boy, it really sounded like he was fishing for something. An admission. Of a kind at least. Or maybe a confession.
You didn’t know.
You didn’t know what he was after.
“You watch me, when I do things for others,” he stated. “And I know, because I see you watch me. You also tend to frown, whenever I do. Unless, it’s to you,” he was being blunt. But it was accurate enough. “That why I...” he trailed off, leaving you guessing.
“And that’s why I...” you repeated, trying to encourage him to continue the sentence.
“I think that you like me.”
Another very blunt statement.
But... it wasn’t a wrong one.
Which was even more obvious from the way your chin lowered and eyes averted, fell to the ground next to you because... does anyone really watch the person saying such a thing into the eye. At least all the time. Throughout the expression that might be given. The seconds that would tick.
Does anyone really watch the person who says that they think you might fancy them?
“That’s something I don’t get about you,” he said with a slight frown; furrowed brows.
Your eyes stayed down, and you could feel a lump rising to your throat. Because the way he had worded it, sounded a lot like rejection. Something you say before telling that you’re not interested.
“You’re tough. You’re strong and you can get through a lot and-,” he hesitated.
When you lifted your gaze to look at him, you saw that his eyes were down in turn, and he was biting down his molars. Almost like it pained him. Like something... something was hurting him.
“So why?”
He sounded out of breath. Almost as if he was... struggling.
“Why can’t you-, tell me? Am I not worth it? Being told?”
What...? You found yourself thinking.
“I don’t think I have ever seen you not act during a mission, so why...? Am I just not... You see me, and think that I’m not worth acting on those emotions?”
...
So that was it.
He had been waiting. Because he didn’t think himself worthy of taking the first step. Because he didn’t think that anyone might like him. Not that he had, for many years in his life, longed for it. Hoped for it.
He had had other things on his mind. More pressing things. But now... now that it was right in front of him, he had dared to hope that someone might like him for him.
Only that it seemed like he wasn’t, in his mind, worth of being approached; nothing but a passing fling.
“So you... you... like me... too?” You managed to ask through the haze and the wonder and the turmoil of thoughts bouncing through your mind.
There was a pause.
It must’ve lasted only for a few seconds, but it felt much longer.
“Isn’t it obvious?” He asked, turning his head further away.
“No,” you whispered, and inhaled. You must’ve been holding your breath.
He took a few steps where he stood. Just a couple. As if he needed to move, or couldn’t stay still. And rubbed the back of his neck. Stood there and stared into the distance with his side turned to you.
“Well, I do, so...”
His side was still turned to you, as you tried, tried, to process his words. The fact that he hadn’t only been watching you feel all the things you did, though not always very pretty emotions, because jealousy wasn’t such by any means, but he still, still did like you and saw that emotion of yours as nothing more than an indicator of you liking him. But you still didn’t walk up to him, or making it clear to him that you did like him, so that maybe the two of you would make something out of it. Rather you stayed in the side lines, feeling all the things you did within yourself. It was just the small indicators here and there that spilled out. So... so...
You took a few steps closer to him, and placed your hand onto his shoulder.
“I... like you,” you spoke with a hushed tone. “Too,” you added.
His head was the first to turn towards you. His body followed as he again took steps in his place, only that this time he turned towards you.
“..So...?” You continued, eyes flickering down and to him. “Do you-, even though I’m-, kinda the jealous type, you wouldn’t mind... dating someone like that?” You hesitated, because you were very aware of your unpleasant trait. Even if it was only human.
He turned his head again, and chuckled under his breath as the corners of his mouth were tugged up.
“You know I’m an ex con, right?”
“Well yeah-“
“And you’re asking if I mind a little bit of jealousy?”
“Well... yeah...” you looked away, realizing how silly in comparison it sounded.
“Look I... get jealous too. Sometimes.” The last words was spoke under his breath. As if a secret.
“So... we’re like two peas in a pod?” You gave him a look, delivered with a careful smile.
“Yeah, I guess we are...” he smiled, just a little but he did.
And in that smile, there was hope. A whisper of happiness. An inkling feeling of things to come.
But most of all, there was a hint of something that wished, wished oh so much that it could blossom into an emotion as grand, as love. And perhaps, it would be allowed to.

Gabe Fleisher at Wake Up To Politics:
Last night, one of America’s two political parties gathered in Illinois and heard from a former CIA officer and several military veterans. They waved American flags and chanted “USA” while homage was paid to John McCain and Ronald Reagan. A sheriff spoke about increasing police funding; a Tea Party lawmaker opined on what it means to be conservative. The party’s presidential nominee, a former prosecutor, promised to toughen border security and protect American freedom. No, it wasn’t a Republican convention. Just a new political reality. The Democratic convention in Chicago showed a party finally addressing a core contradiction of the past half-decade. Electorally speaking, the Trump years have been good to Democrats, with victories in 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2023 raining down like manna from heaven. But from a messaging standpoint, the era has been one stumble after another, with the party bouncing around the ideological map in search of a narrative that clicks. The persistent sense has been that the Democrats have won more for being the “not Trump” party than due to any positive association in voters’ minds.
Polls show that the party has a brand problem — one they may be able to overcome while Trump is on the ballot, but which will surely be lurking afterwards. But conventions are nothing if not branding exercises; the Democrats’ this past week reflected a party trying to forge a new identity. So what if it meant pissing off some members of their coalition and cribbing several major Republican talking points? The convention showed a party was a party that wants to win — not just against Donald Trump, but after him too — and is willing to remake itself to do it. The Democrats appeared keenly aware of their worst stereotypes and came prepared with carefully calibrated, poll-tested responses to each one.
Soft on crime? “After decades in law enforcement, I know the importance of safety and security,” Vice President Kamala Harris said, in an acceptance speech that returned repeatedly to her experience as a prosecutor. Weak on national security? “I will never hesitate to take whatever action is necessary to defend our forces and our interests,” she declared. Afraid of military might? “I will ensure America always has the strongest, most lethal fighting force in the world,” Harris said. Judgmental? Nearly ever major DNC speaker took pains to offer grace to conservatives, instead of scorning them, from former President Barack Obama noting that when “a parent or grandparent occasionally says something that makes us cringe, we don’t automatically assume they’re bad people” to Oprah Winfrey promising that “we are not so different from our neighbors.”
Unpatriotic? When Harris walked onto the stage, the crowd didn’t chant “Kamala” or “We’re not going back” or any of the other slogans in their arsenal. They chanted “USA.” In fact, “USA” chants were heard every night of the convention, often during almost every speech. Attendees held aloft “USA” signs and American flags; later, when they were handed long “Kamala” signs ahead of her acceptance speech, many delegates stuck the American flag on top of them, so that when they cheered for Harris, the floor remained a sea of flags. Many of these epithets are labels that have haunted Democrats for decades, stretching back into the 1970s and in some cases even earlier. In that time, Republicans have reliably been the party that has wrapped themselves in the flag and projected a tough image on national defense and law and order, so much so that the scene from the United Center sometimes seemed straight out of an RNC. Harris also seemed to determined to break with the long Democratic tradition of condescension, from “egghead” Adlai Stevenson to “elitist” Hillary Clinton and her “basket of deplorables.” This convention was one of the first times they seemed conscious of it, and actively tried to move in another direction.
The whole event was a far cry from 2020, when Democrats allowed themselves to become the party of “defund the police” and the academic alphabet soup of DEI and CRT. In just four years, the party went from declaring in their platform that “Democrats believe we need to overhaul the criminal justice system from top to bottom,” because “police brutality is a stain on the soul of our nation,” to pledging to put “more police officers on the beat” in the 2024 version. “We need to fund the police, not defund the police,” the party’s platform now reads. Attendees cheered when a sheriff made that same point on Thursday, something that would have sounded unbelievable to 2020 ears. (As would the nomination of a former prosecutor.) It was also a departure from 2016, when identity ruled the day as Hillary Clinton reminded delegates that she was the first woman nominated for the presidency. Harris never once referred to the fact that she was only the second female nominee, and first Black female nominee, allowing the delegates wearing suffragette white to serve as the lone nod to her history-making nomination.
Other typically Democratic elements were airbrushed from the speech as well. Issues that poll well, like abortion, were emphasized. Issues that poll poorly, like climate change and transgender issues, were mentioned once and not at all, respectively, by Harris. (Democratic fears of yet another label — “woke” — were clear.) These decisions angered some activists, as did the exclusion of a Palestinian-American speaker, but after years of attempting to please every segment of their varied coalition, Democrats have made the cold calculation that the voters they truly need to target are the plurality in the middle. Just as they pushed out Joe Biden in service of chasing victory, evincing little emotional attachment to an aging leader, the party seems newly willing to spite its fringes to save its power.
[...] For me, one of the most enduring images of the convention will be the two young men standing near me who looked like they could have been straight out of a Barstool video — a demographic Democrats have struggled with — screaming “USA” with a fierce intensity. In reality, though, these young men are a Democratic minority: only 29% of Democrats told Gallup they are “extremely proud” to be Americans last year; 60% of Republicans did so. I think back to the conference of young Democrats I covered last year, when a speaker asked how many attendees are “patriotic” and only a scattering of hands went up. [...] The Democratic convention showed a party playing to win, unlike the Republican convention in July, which showed a party that believed it already had. The DNC also showed a party preparing for the future — parading its bench, shaving down its harsher edges to position itself for campaigns against post-Trump opponents — in stark contrast to the Trump-centric RNC. At the same time as Trump appears distracted, Democrats have never seemed more laser-focused on pursuing victory.
Gabe Fleisher wrote in Friday’s Wake Up To Politics newsletter on the Democratic Party’s image makeover that was on display at the DNC by taking the freedom and patriotism mantle and ran with it, while jettisoning or downplaying themes prevalent in the 2016 and 2020 editions.

Okay, I've read a lot of election analysis over the last few weeks and I've been thinking about the concept of a political mandate, but I haven't heard anything yet about the "shark attack voters". Indulge me, would you, for a LONG RANT (TM).
SHARK ATTACK!
So this is still disputed in the academic world (and trust me, there's a ton of great arguments and counter-arguments out there if you're interested), but there was a 2002 paper that purported to show that Woodrow Wilson's vote total dropped in several New Jersey counties in his 1916 re-election when compared to his 1912 election because that region had suffered a rash of highly publicized shark attacks that severely damaged its major industry, tourism. Since Woodrow Wilson clearly had no ability to control shark attacks, this is frequently referred to as an example of voters punishing a politician for something over which that politician had no control.
As I said, this case is not exactly definitive and there's lots of research pouring cold water on its exact conclusions, but the basic premise, that voters are not particularly good about rewarding or punishing politicians for things that they actually have direct control over, is something that's actually fairly well backed up by a ton of research. There's even some really solid research that came out in 2019 showing that, not only are voters not good at punishing or rewarding politicians for things they actually do, the types of things politicians do are not the kinds of things that actually make significant differences in the 2-4 year spans in which voters judge them in the first place!
So yeah, despite the fact that the specific study isn't as definitive as it claimed, I think the term "shark attack voter" is an evocative name and I'm going to use it to describe voters who match what a bunch of other research is finding. Specifically, the shark attack voter has a very simple approach to the polls, if they feel badly, whatever the reason, they vote against the guy in charge.
A MANDATE
What do we mean by a mandate? Well, in a democratic system, a mandate would typically come from the people. It would mean that the voters have approved a candidate in such a way that it is clear they want him/her to carry out his/her promises. This would typically come about in two ways; first, we would see that candidate clearly and convincingly win the election and, second, we would see that people in exit polling clearly favored the things the candidate promised to do.
That first part is interesting, though, because I wrote fairly recently in a thing examining Trump's vote total about how no one has clearly and convincingly won the presidency in quite some time. We used to have clear and convincing wins, Eisenhower beat Adlai Stevenson by more than 15% in 1956, Nixon defeated McGovern by over 20% in 1972, and Reagan defeated Mondale by over 18% in 1984. Lately, though, the margins have become much closer. The margin in 2024 was less than 2%, 2020 was less than 5%, and the winning candidate in 2016 lost the popular vote by more than 2%. In fact, the only time in the 21st century that a president won with a margin of greater than 5% in the popular vote was Barack Obama in 2008.
The second part… yeah, the second part is interesting. In 2008, for example, Obama ran on an explicit platform of reforming American health care, so one would think that his reasonably sizeable victory could be considered a mandate for that. Except that only 9% of voters in a Pew poll conducted immediately after the election noted health care as a top issue (compared with 63% who named the economy). By the time polling began on the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare), it was basically even on the approve/disapprove polling and turned negative before passing. Did Obama have a mandate to do the thing he'd most clearly promised to do? I'd honestly say it's questionable, and probably even more so for all the other president-elects who've won by significantly smaller margins.
Why does this matter? Well, let's go back to the shark attack voter. A shark attack voter isn't voting for a candidate because of their policy, they just don't like the way things are going right now for some reason. So if your margin is close enough that it was probably shark attack voters that put you over the top (I'll spare you the details, but I calculate them at about 2% of the electorate, so a potential margin of 4% against the incumbent party), then there's no reasonable way to claim a mandate for your positions and policies even if you were clearly running on said positions and policies.
THE LAST SEVERAL ELECTIONS
What does this mean for us? Well, there's probably a lot of shark attack voters out there right now. As I said, I've calculated them at 2% of the electorate on average, but that may be an undercount since Americans have gotten more and more dissatisfied in the last few decades. In the late 90s and early 00s, between 50% and 60% of Americans were satisfied with the direction of the country; since 2005 it's mostly been between 20% and 30%. That's not remotely normal, by the way, the only other times it's dipped that low in Gallup's polling history are for brief periods in the early 80s and early 90s; there's certainly no other period of that kind of pessimism sustained over two decades.
I also have to take a closer look at Obama's 2008 win (again) because it has interesting implications for my shark attack voter theory; specifically the estimate that they compose 2% of the electorate. Obama won in 2008 by over 7%, the most decisive electoral win in this century. One of his primary policies, that he campaigned on loudly and openly, was to revamp American health care. However, as I noted above, when he started to push for the Affordable Care Act, which, remember, he had loudly and openly promised to do as a candidate, it immediately became horribly unpopular and his approval rating quickly sank below 50% as a result. In other words, it seems very likely that more than 2% of the electorate didn't vote for him because of the policy that he promised to enact.
Given this, I'm comfortable saying that no less than 2% of the electorate are shark attack voters, but I'm not confident that there aren't significantly more than that.
THE THING ABOUT SHARK ATTACKS…
However, as much as we examine policy and deliberate actions on the parts of presidents, we have to remember that one of the defining features of the shark attack voter is that they're not actually reacting to any of that, they're reacting to how they feel about how things are going generally; whether or not the president has any control over it or has done anything to affect it at all. Sure, the rancor of the Obamacare debate probably sunk through to them and certainly didn't help the feeling that things were on the wrong track, but a lot of them were probably also reacting to the fact that the US was still mired in the depths of the Great Recession which was deeper and lasted longer than anyone anticipated. Could Obama have done more about it? Probably. Did he really have a ton of control over it? Not really.
We saw this in the most recent election as well. Inflation was pretty bad in 2021 and 2022, but by mid 2023 it was back down to quite reasonable levels and wage growth has been growing well above the rate of inflation since then as well. Prices haven't gone down, but they also tend not to do that unless things are really bad (look up "deflation" if you want to know more about that). In other words, inflation was pretty much under control by the 2024 election, but polling, both exit and regular, is clear that voters punished both him and Harris for it regardless.
On an even bigger scale, it's also important to note that Biden seems to have had very little to do with inflation in the first place. Inflation was first pushed upwards by supply disruptions during the pandemic and then received a further kick from supply disruptions due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and sanctions related to that conflict. Of countries in the developed world, in fact, the United States has actually seen among the lowest inflation due to these factors. Could Biden have done more about inflation? Maybe, but it's also been a world-wide phenomenon which the United States has ridden through better than any other developed country.
In other words, the type of voters who decide elections these days, either by switching sides or by staying home, may not only be punishing presidents because they don't feel things are going well, they may also be punishing presidents for things over which they have literally no ability to change.
THE BROADER IMPLICATIONS
The simple fact is that I'm not sure any president in my adult lifetime has actually had a mandate to enact any sort of major policy upheaval. No president has been elected with a clear majority that's greater than "I don't like how things are going under the other guy" and no president has been re-elected with anything more than "I guess I'll stick with the devil I know."
Yet, despite that, we're very clearly in an era where both parties want their politicians, not just their presidents, to make major, foundation-shaking change. Republicans want to dramatically cut our country off from the world, both in terms of trade and in terms of immigration, and they desperately want to go back to the days when people who straight, white, Christians disapproved of would go back into hiding rather than making their presence felt in public. Democrats, on the other hand, want the state to take a much larger role in providing a floor of well-being for every person instead of leaving everything up to the market.
It's fairly reasonable to say that the rapidly shifting political landscape we've seen in the 21st century, with the presidency alternating regularly between the parties and majorities in each house of Congress lasting for an average of only 4-6 years at a time, reflects a situation where the median voter would like a sense of stability and/or prosperity while both political parties only offer different visions of significant change. Both parties have been punished for failing to provide what I guess we can refer to as "good vibes" and, with the current profit-driven media landscape that prioritizes conflict as a driver of engagement, it's a pretty good bet that that is likely to remain unchanged for the foreseeable future.
More importantly, the incentives of each party are also likely to remain unchanged. Think about it, if there's nothing you can do to make people feel better and you're guaranteed to lose the next election or the one after that anyways, why wouldn't you try to just accomplish whatever you think you can while you have the power to do so? I don't see a strong incentive for either party to moderate given that the voters who decide elections will just keep swinging the pendulum of power no matter what they do.
CONCLUSION OR TL;DR:
There seems to be a critical mass of voters these days that's just upset and frustrated with how things are going generally. These voters, who I call "shark attack voters" for reasons that I explained above, tend to vote solely on how they think things are going in general without any regard for whether the politician in question had any ability to do anything about it. They're largely responsible for the dramatic swings we've seen in elections in the 21st century, with power moving wildly between the two parties every 4-6 years.
Unfortunately, this provides very little incentive for the parties to do anything but follow their own agendas. After all, if they're going to be kicked out of office in a few years for something over which they have very little control (and let's face it, even the president and Congress together have very little control over the movements of the global economy except for drastic actions they could take that would make things massively worse), they may as well accomplish a few things for their base while they're in office.
It seems likely that this is it for the foreseeable future. The world is changing in ways that are going to continue to affect our country and even the greatest set of presidents and congresspeople will be able to do little more than gently bend that arc over a period of decades. I'm predicting continued quick shifts in partisan control of the government and politicians who continue to prioritize partisan projects during their relatively short stints of control. Until something shifts to give one party a more permanent advantage or until the median voter becomes more discerning about how they vote, that's just how it's probably going to be.

Gauche x Grey (Greyche analysis) PART 1
(not me promoting my art as the cover)
Tumblr media
Heyaa So, the purpose of this analysis is just...I don't know I was bored KQKQOWK and I’ve been wanting to make an analysis on these two with manga and anime info (besides personal opinions) for a while now; It's just my take, you don’t need to agree with anything I’ll be saying. I just wanted to talk EDUHUEID- This will have two parts, since the first part is pretty much a non romantic analysis and it already is too much text to deal with EIUDIOEDHDH shit gets serious on the second part. Of course there will be spoilers for anime and manga- (NOTE: I won't go into terms and name meanings since I believe it's already talked a lot so yeah. Sorry if there's any mistakes, I'm just a bro talking about Greyche) WELL TO GET STARTED, BRIEF INFO ABOUT THEM:
Tumblr media
Gauche Adlai, member of the Black Bulls, fallen royal, ex convict, possesses Mirror Magic and has an extreme obsession with his younger sister Marie Adlai. This obsession often leads to comedic or just cringe situations. (or just people starting to hate him in general) I think his "character purpose/lesson" (idk how to put it) is about "trust" and "protect". Especially about learning to trust others and creating bonds with other people, because not everyone will betray him. People aren't the same, and I get the feeling of trauma where you are backstabbed and therefore your defensive levels rise and your trust levels lower. It's fucked up and with his background is even more fucked up. But it’s all a life learning experience on “how he can trust others besides himself (and Marie)”. Well he a tsundere mf MAKQLQOW just joking (or not) I also think his "character purpose/lesson" is about "taking a look at others besides himself (and Marie)". [inserts mirror brigades]
Tumblr media
Grey, true name unknown, member of the Black Bulls, Cinderella backstory, shy and socially awkward that struggles with self-esteem af. But it is understandable do to her back story. She was believed to possess Transformation Magic, but later on Owen called it "Transmutation Magic". Personally I like to call it "Fairy Godmother Type of shit" I think it suits it pretty much. Well, she used to hide her true form and walk around as a big ass scary dude, because she feared to not be accepted by others due to her true appearance and so on, so she chose/embraced that appearance because it maybe reflects on how she sees herself after all. I think her "character purpose/lesson" is like about overcoming her insecurities and actually let herself see her true self for what she truly is and not what her fears, her abusive family and insecurities showed/show her to be. Basically "taking a better look at herself".
Tumblr media
I think both of them have their issues just so rooted since they were younger and that's why it's so current on them. Gauche's obsession and trust issues and Grey's terrible self-esteem and lack of confidence. Both MIRROR (hehehe) their "character purpose/lesson": Gauche needs to "take a better look at others besides himself" and Grey needs to "take a better look at herself"; Besides of course how ironic it is for Gauche to have Mirror Magic and Grey having a complete messed up pov of herself. I can see both trying to be the best versions of themselves. Grey always trying to improve, and Gauche working on his rude behavior and actually showing to trust and protecting others. And of course they pretty much mirror each other in moods. So, before talking about their moments of this first part, I just wanna say: 1) I'mma cover their moments but I won't do a complilation of all their frames together just... breathing side to side. I do want to state that they are framed together A LOT so keep that just in mind; 2) I also wanna say that I have a little theory that Gauche might have ironically self esteem issues too (not so high like Grey but there's something sus there). Like he seems conscious of his attitudes and on how he is a bastard that “shouldn’t even be saved” by his friends. Like he seems to feel guilty about it idk. Besides that, something caught me and it is probably nothing BUT he states that he has been hiding his left eye before he used the mirror tool for the first time and I can't stop thinking that he finds it creepy idk why. Also I wonder the story behind that mirror tool. 3) And finally about their Grimoires, I do see the mirror detail on Grey's but Gauche's, I don't see at all that theory where it is a "wrapped present" or something like that. I don't have a firm opinion on what his Grimoire detail might symbolize but I think both are mirrors, Grey's has no reflection and Gauche's has. But I’m not really sure.
WELL NOW LET'S BEGIN
Before the Seabed Temple arc, I don’t think there’s something relevant at all to be talked between them as that Grey’s true form wasn’t even revealed yet. If I'm wrong and something relevant happened comment on it please iujiorfjrf- However at the Seabed Temple arc:
(Chapter 66) I think their fight agaisnt Zarick (the aftermatch) is really funny and showed good dynamic and partnership between them even if Gauche ordered around. A funny first actual interaction to show us DEHUDHE Also thanks Grey for giving us goofy Gauche.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also I love how Grey is willing to kill UDEIIDHIUED YES SIR LET'S DO IT The piggyback ride is also iconic Okay now the highlight that is "actually relevant", the compliment and the infamous "Gauche blushed" "He nosebleed before pulling the picture" and yara yara
Tumblr media
Well, Gauche compliments Grey's magic which makes Grey go doki doki, since she probably didn't get complimented at all before. She of course took to heart that compliment to her magic, but since it came from Gauche (due to all the backstory where he is envolved) she takes it even more to heart. Also It's funny whenever Gauche is sincere he looks away from everyone udieuduh I just wanted to comment on that because same.
Well, the transformation starts to go off, Gauche believed Grey was just that big ass scary dude walking around, and then PUFF Grey's true form revealed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Truly I don't think Gauche either blushed or nosebleed at her before pulling the picture. idk how debatable is that but to me he just didn't. And it is okay HIEUDHIUEHD. If he pulled the picture as an excuse? I don't know, I don't believe it either... only when I see it. I think it was too early for something and well Charmy comments on how he isn't looking at Grey at all. At this early point in the story not even Grey wanted Gauche (or anyone really) to look at all at her as she says (or admits to herself) later on. So I think it's pretty much "balanced" for something in it's early stages?
Tumblr media
If it matters he was at least listening to the conversation but that still doesn't say anything at all (at least to me), it's sus of him caring enough to listen? A bit, but mf was right there so yeah it would be natural for him to hear. I just think they were still building up just partnership, and it's totally fine. If you disagree and Gauche showed interest, it's fine too <3 After that in the anime they are there, but it's not relevant at all. And for this arc is basically it. At the Royal Knights Arc, during the exam in the anime, they are pretty much just there or framed besides each other but that's pretty much it, honestly they play a bigger part later on. But I felt like mentioning.
(Chapter 138) We are now taking a look at the AWKWARD TRIAD
Tumblr media
Again it's all about more partnership rather than any romance or such between them. And of course partnership is impoortant as fuck too. Which is nice to me see that partnership before anything else, sorry if I like the slowest of the slowburns. Well Gordon and Grey struggle to well… socialize as they are the three "equality quiet friends" (As Gordon refers it, but to me they are just the AWKWARD TRIAD). In Grey's anxious pov, she states how she should try to be more herself since her comrades see her as one of them. Then she says in a smaller speech that "Even Gauche" complimented her, and that's basically an encoragement for her to try to be herself since even THAT STONE HEARTED GUY complimented her DIUEDHIUHDIHE kidding Since Gauche is rude and has a defensive posture towards everyone in general it is kind of a "reassurance" for her that if even him said something nice, then it must be okay. Grey pretty much sees a good side to Gauche despite his behaviour that himself sees as something bastard of nature.
Tumblr media
Well Grey picks up her big balls and tries to make conversation with Gauche. Gauche is just... Gauche and well it's funny UDEIUDHe
Tumblr media
Then shit is about to get real at the hideout,
Tumblr media
and we all know what happened next. Gauche won't be playing anymore after that. also I wanted to state that
Tumblr media
Mf just didn't went to bathroom through the whole thing UEDUDIU sad ;-;
(Chapters 139-140) So shit breaks out at the hideout and we have the awkward triad working together. We have just mainly small Greyche moments of them. Like the fact that (as we knew) Grey took to heart what Gauche said and that made her learn really quickly another spell. (It took her 5 years to learn her first one) And so on, I also think (I hope I'm not mistaken) that in the anime they talk at the same time a few times but I'm not sure, however it's just funny nothing really OMG.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also this is also funny:
Tumblr media
(Chapter 141) We have Gauche encouraging Grey. She is of course doubtfull she can transform something big as that salamander and Gauche reasures her that it will be fine and they look at each other. I was going to say "He tells her to look at him" but "they looked at each other" sounds more meaningful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
aaah the brigades. We have one of the first Grey Mirrors Brigades, since he seems to mirror brigade her a lot through the story. I feel like I've seen it 20 times which I know i didn't but it's the feeling. Which in strategic purposes it's great and all but this is a ship analysis so SUS
and that's pretty much it for this arc Elf Reincarnation Arc:
(Chapter 149)
Tumblr media
I just wanna comment this small detail. On how sus it is to put Grey there in frame. Not to say that it means a lot because to me things weren't really romantic until the timeskip, but it's just sus. And I wanted to comment on that. Doesn't make sense at all to include her if it wasn't something to become sus. Maybe Grey was framed there just because, but it wasn't necessary at all specially since Gordon would look more likely to be framed there at that distance. It's just sus, it bothered me while reading IDEIUHDEIUDH. I WAS VENTING
Tumblr media
BUT HEY
Tumblr media
THEIR FIRST KISS UHDEUHDH It's just so funny to me also sus that he should have hit Gordon's forehead SINCE HE WAS IN HIS FACE, but hey here's their first kiss. Thanks for stepping back Gordon, you are a true bro.
Tumblr media
Well moving on (and yes I'm not talking about the fight at all because well sure Grey was fighting for him like everyone else and she didn't want to lose any of her friends) Here's the thing, where Gauche thinks of himself as a little bitch that should be left behind. And despite that they still consider him basically family, and of course despite not being shown, we know Grey still sees a good side to him too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and next, the main panel that makes me say that his "character purpose/lesson" is to look at others, especially those 3. I find it meaningful Asta saying "Look at us" since "Look at me" is Gauche's line.
Tumblr media
Well for that arc it's basically all, after the last thing mentioned they are just framed side to side.
However when they return, I DO KNOW the Return episode, is filler but I really wanted to comment on how Grey called Gauche a wall for her to hide EDIUDHEIUHD And he took it personally IDHIUEHD
Tumblr media
Okay MOVING ON For the last part of this first part of the analysis
(Chapter 223) Well Yami implied them all are friends or get along at least, (I know if I don't mention it somebody might point it out) On the anime, Gauche comments on things Grey says like the fact that she is feeling overwhelmed at the thought of being cursed by someone she doesn't know, but focusing of the "person she doesn't know "part and he is all like "THE PART OF BEING FUCKING CURSED DOESN'T SCARE YOU?" Now at Gordon's House Gate, Grey clings to Gauche and he doesn't seem to be comfortable at all, but well it doesn't matter since later on it's just another day for him EUDEdh And Grey clings and hides behind him whenever she needs. I like the fact that in the anime Asta looks at them all like "What the fuck is going on here?", you can still see him looking at them in the manga but he looks so awkward in the anime IEHDIUEHDH
Tumblr media
Then at the Agrippa family dinner I find it hilarious that Gauche feels awkward (such an achievement) and he whispers to Grey telling her to say something, like she would even talk UDEIDHEUHD on the first place EIDIHE well at least in the anime he took care of the weird shit Gordon's sister gave Grey.
Tumblr media
Well here's a cute panel
WELL GUYS we've reached the end of the first part. The second part will include actually more analysing on things since shit starts to get serious from now on. I wanted to look at things from the early stages and since they are a side ship there's not that much to look at before what's upcoming so yeah. (I mean there's A LOT to look at since they are framed a lot together, but actual things happening it a bit less on this part at least) NEXT UP -Episode 150 -Rest of the storyline until chapter 368 -The Movie -Probably me just rambling about them
I hope you liked this It's just for fun <3

The Golden Thirteen were the thirteen African American enlisted men who became the first African American commissioned and warrant officers in the Navy. Responding to pressure from First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Assistant Secretary of the Navy Adlai Stevenson, in January 1944, the Navy began an accelerated 2-month officer training course for 16 African-American enlisted men at Camp Robert Smalls, Recruit Training Center Great Lakes in Illinois. The class average at graduation was 3.89. Throughout the history of the US until the end of WWI, the Navy had enlisted African Americans for general service, but they were barred from joining from 1919 to 1932. From 1893 onwards, African Americans could only join the Navy's Messman's and Steward's branches, which not only segregated African Americans from the rest of the Navy community but precluded them from becoming commissioned officers. All sixteen members of the class passed the course, but only twelve were commissioned in March 1944: John Walter Reagan, Jesse Walter Arbor, Dalton Louis Baugh Sr., Frank Ellis Sublett, Graham Edward Martin, Phillip George Barnes, Reginald E. Goodwin, James Edward Hair, Samuel Edward Barnes, George Clinton Cooper, William S. White, and Dennis Denmark Nelson were commissioned as Ensigns; and Charles Byrd Lear was appointed as a Warrant Officer. The reason why only 13 gained rank, despite all the men being successful in training was never explained, but it is noted that this rate brought the pass rate down to the level of the average class of white candidates. Because Navy policy barred African Americans from being assigned to combat ships, the first class of African American officers were assigned to command shore logistics units, small tug, and tender ships, and training African American enlisted. President Harry S. Truman desegregated the military in 1948. At the time of the Golden Thirteen's commissioning, approximately 100,000 African-American men were serving in the Navy's enlisted ranks. Frank E. Sublett, the last living member of the group, died in 2006. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm9AfgSrxDf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

My US Voting Record:
I made this with the help of wikipedia, google and posts like voting guides which I found online.
Note: I would have been a Monarchist during the Revolutionary War, but I'd probably still vote if living in America (No matter how displeased the revolution made me, I'd probably still always be willing to vote). But to show my dissatisfaction, every vote until 1824 is a protest vote:
1788: Nobody (I refuse to vote for George Washington). Maybe a write in protest vote for King George III?
1792: Nobody (I refuse to vote for George Washington). Maybe a write in protest vote for King George III?
1796: Maybe a write in protest vote for King George III?
1800: Maybe a write in protest vote for King George III?
1804: Maybe a write in protest vote for King George III?
1808: Maybe a write in protest vote for King George III?
1812: Protest Vote for King George III (I can't vote for anyone after the War of 1812 got started)
1816: Protest Vote for King George III (again, I don't know if I'd be able to forgive anyone after the War of 1812)
1820: Protest Vote for King George IV (I can't support Monroe after he helped fight 1812 against Canada and the British).
1824: Henry Clay/Nathan Sanford
1824 Contingent: John Quincy Adams
1828: John Quincy Adams/Richard Rush
1832: Henry Clay/John Sergeant

1920: Eugene V. Debs/Seymour Stedman
1924: Robert M. LaFollette/Burton K. Wheeler
1928: Al Smith/Joseph T. Robinson (although Herbert Hoover and Charles Curtis aren't bad either. I might've been a prohibitionist then, considering I hate the taste of alcohol. But Smith opposed lynching. So he gets my vote).

1936: Norman Thomas/George A. Nelson
1940: Norman Thomas/Maynard Krueger
1944: Norman Thomas/Darlington Hoopes

1976: Gerald Ford/Bob Dole
1980: Jimmy Carter/Walter Mondale
1984: Walter Mondale/Geraldine Ferraro
1988: Willa Kenoyer/Ron Ehrenreich (I hear Michael Dukakis went to high school with the guy who founded the Judge Rotenberg Centre, which is a terrible place. So I can't vote for Dukakis. Can't take a chance on him with that history).

1996: Ross Perot/Pat Choate
2000: Ralph Nader/Winona Laduke
2004: Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo
2008: Ralph Nader/Matt Gonzalez
2012: Barack Obama/Joe Biden (Beginning in 2012, I'd probably start voting for Democrats more often because I felt I had no choice. But I'm still a bit unhappy with them. Haven't been since 1988 or 1992).
2016: Gloria La Riva/Eugene Puryear
2020: Joe Biden/Kamala Harris (My heart says Howie Hawkins/Angela Walker, however).

What the hell is the Second Epistle of Judas? There IS a Gospel of Judas which wasn't actually WRITTEN by Judas, but there isnt even one Epistle of Judas??? wtf
This book is quite notorious among demons, as you might have noticed from my previous post [put a link there], but it has never been released to the general public until parts of the Tindall version of the translation were leaked in 2004.
As Judas committed suicide out of despair, he was subsequently accused of turning away from God. It is quite notable that Judas himself stated on multiple occasions that his betrayal of Christ did not serve as a deciding factor in his judgement, not only because Judas did not commit asked for forgiveness of Christ and confessed to his sins multiple times, showing his repentance. Neither was his suicide, as suicide was named a sin solely by man -to reduce suicide rates among people who believed they would go to Heaven as martyrs for dying at someone's hand. The true deciding factor was his lack of belief in Jesus's forgiveness and his despair that led him to suicide.
Therefore, as his only unrepented sin was considered minor, Judas was sentenced to Limbo and the celestial version of service public service. He is the force behind the establishment of New Akeldama, as well as great help to Cain and Abel in their work in Hell. (For context to those who lack it: Abel was not sentenced to Hell, but eventually his bleeding heart led him to come to Hell and help his brother in his work; God allowed it and thus Abel currently lives in Hell by his own volition. Both of those events are contributing facts to Lucifer and Satan accusing God of favoritism and unjust behavior when they were voicing their grievances with him.)
During his servitude, Judas was called upon by Jesus and had written down multiple epistles from his words. The current estimations point at no less than three and no more than six epistles, although only two have become available. Note that while Jesus isn't welcome in Hell, we can do little in the way of stopping him.
The first Epistle was released nigh immediately, and is quite a read, as while it is clear that is the message is not meant to be taken seriously. It's a word-for-word retelling of Jesus's words, but due to there being no doubts as to its canonicity, which brings us one of at least six lies in the Bible. Not counting many obvious contradictions in it, of course, which could be considered falsehoods, but are not facts and therefore cannot be considered lies.
The second Epistle, "God's Will To His Errant Sons", takes quite a turn in tone as it is a collection of rewritings of Jesus's advice to demons by Judas, who is decidedly not a good writer. He attempts to keep it in contemporary at that time Bible verse, but sometimes fails and resorts to prose, which is the way in which the original Gospels were written, or even defaults to pesukim-like writing. He separates the writing into four chapters, the first two addressing Lucifer and Satan accordingly, the third one intended for other Fallen, and the fourth one for all of demonkind. As the epistle is written in Aramaic and riddled with metaphors, more literal translation techniques such as spells fail to produce coherent results. Multiple attempts have been made in the 17th century, but due to natural decay and poor management by Judas, not much of it remained and it was sealed in stasis until restoration work was done by the team consisting of Eleanora Tindall, Charles Adlai Levy and Dai Ike Roshanee. After parts of that version of the translation were leaked by an unknown individual (presumably a member of Lucifer's family or one of many restoration consultants), the partial restoration of the last two chapters from 1600s was released to the public in 2008 in its original form, which was written in a mix of Early Modern English and Latin, and translated the entirety of the writing as one block of text with blanks in place of words or sentences the translator did not understand. In 2018, the Judas Epistle Project combined all the information we have from both releases and translated it into modern Hell dialect of English, as well as replaced parts of the third and fourth chapters with Tindall's translation whenever possible. It's currently available online for all citizens of Hell who can confirm their identity through a hell.gov integration. Otherwise you might have to find a demon to check it out for you.
P.S. Judas has been heard mentioning that part of an unreleased epistle he had to rewrite himself, as the words used in it fell out of fashion and would not be in place in the mouth of Jesus. He has also confirmed that the Gospel of Judas is an entirely fabricated piece of writing that came long after his death.

Failed Nominees pt.3
1912 saw the re-emboldened Theodore Roosevelt run again- but after failing the Republican nomination, he ran under the Progressive Party- an act which quite notoriously split the vote, and allowed Democrat (and famous racist) Woodrow Wilson to clinch the presidency. If things had gone differently- T.R. could have joined Cleveland in having non-consecutive terms.
An interesting example of the exact opposite phenomenon comes in the Republican Party during the presidency of FDR- in every election, from 1932 to 1944, they nominated a different nominee, each time failing before Roosevelt.
In the 1944 election, the Republicans would nominate Thomas Dewey- who would lose in the face of Roosevelt's wartime momentum. However, he would be nominated yet again in 1948 against Harry Truman (who had conventionally been seen as unpopular, but would win after a hugely popular campaign). Notably, Dewey was expected by almost everyone to win- somewhat infamously, newspapers printed front pages announcing his victory before all the votes were even in. It came as a surprise to many that Truman secured a term in his own right.
Seeming to repeat the whole thing with the 1896 and 1900 elections were the 1952 and 1956 elections- both of which saw Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower face off against Democrat Adlai Stevenson. Eisenhower's post-war popularity, having commanded the allied armies in ww2, saw him through both elections.
Somewhat infamously, the Republican nominee in 1960 was Richard Nixon. Nixon's 1960 campaign was muddy- JFK was a master campaigner, by comparison. Nixon would see the light of day, however. After a Republican loss in 1964, Nixon was back up as nominee in '68- an election he would win off of the general disunity of the Democratic Party, and the splintering of the 'Dixiecrats'- who found themselves in noted segregationist George Wallace's American Independent Party. Nixon would once again win in 1972, after his campaign had meddled in the Democrats' candidate selection process, getting them to choose relative unknown George McGovern, who was easy pickings.
Since Nixon, the closest we've come to this sort of situation happening with the Dems was with Hillary Clinton, who nearly won the Democratic nomination in 2008, and did win it in 2016. For the Republicans, Trump is a great example- He won in 2016, lost in 2020, and is seeking a win in 2024.
In today's political world, losing candidates don't get re-nominated much. It's just not how the party system works anymore. But I hope this series helped you learn at least a little about an interesting feature of American politics.

“Come on! Are you really that out of practice?”
Lisa waved her hand, dismissing the worry, her breaths about four seconds behind her racing heartbeat. “I-I’m fine-” she managed to say, her lungs feeling like two deflated balloons. They had only been in this joint training session for 15 minutes, and she was starting to get tired. Damn it! She thought, frustrated. All that time doing nothing while I was injured hurt my stamina. She drew in one more deep breath before straightening up again. This is what I get for being reckless, I guess.
Sei watched Lisa recover, blinking a few times in the bright sunlight. Suddenly, someone bumped into him, sending him stumbling a few feet. “Hey! Watch it!” he snapped, looking up to see Finral Roulecase, one of the knights from the Black Bulls squad, on the ground where he had fallen. The Crimson Lions were conducting a joint training session with the Black Bulls, hoping to foster more unity between sects of the organization. The Black Bulls did not have the… best reputation, but they were getting along with Sei’s squad.
“S-Sorry, Sir!” Finral stuttered, jumping to his feet before turning angrily to his opponent. “Asta! Maybe hold back a little?”
The short, grey-haired kid gave his senior a goofy smile. “SORRY! I’ll try! It’s hard to hold back with this ol’thing!” He swung his gigantic black claymore over his shoulder, letting out a loud laugh. Sei couldn’t help but stare at it for a moment. Fuegoleon’s greatsword, the Leo Rugiens, was dwarfed by that thing. It wasn’t the biggest he had ever seen, but for a claymore, it was monstrous. Yeesh. He seems too short to wield a sword like that.
“OUCH! Hey, what was that for, you twerp!”
“AH! I’m sorry!”
Sei turned around to see a tall, brown haired Black Bull marching towards Leo, Fuegoleon’s younger brother, with fury in his eyes. There was a bruise upon his cheek, where Leo had hit him with the blunt side of his blade, but the younger boy seemed to be more terrified of his foe. Sei quickly moved between them, sensing that this could get ugly. This is Gauche Adlai, right? He thought, glad to see that Guache halted at the sight of the senior knight. “Hey! You two, you’re not actually supposed to kill each other during this practice. It’s practice after all, right?”
Gauche scoffed, rolling his eyes before turning away. “Whatever. I’m not the one who hit me in the face with a sword.”
Sei wanted to deck the guy in the face, but held himself back. Instead, he just sighed and turned to scowl at Leo. “It was an accident! He was strongarming my blade, and it slipped-”
“I know, I know.” Sei patted the boy on the shoulder. “Go switch out with Finral and fight Asta. The poor guy needs a break.”
Leo’s eyes lit up. “Yessir!” he shouted before running off to face the other energetic boy.
Geez, I wish Fuegoleon didn’t have that stupid meeting, Sei thought to himself, crossing his arms before turning to survey the scene once again. The air was full of the sound of blades clacking and knights grunting. But among the sounds of fighting, there was also laughter and happy chatter, despite the occasional sore loser. It’s only me looking after this bunch. Yami’s at the same meeting, after all.
......................................
“This is supposed to be Patri? Doesn’t look like him at all…”
Yami Sukehiro, captain of the Black Bulls, chewed on his pipe as he stared down at the paper he had just received, along with the 8 other captains. This meeting had only just begun, but he was already tired of it. Joint training is today, he thought. I wish I could beat up some of those Crimson Lions along with my squad…
“Trust me, this is accurate.” Yami looked back up as Julius spoke. He was standing at the head of the table, crown and cape discarded in favor of a more casual outfit. The older man looked troubled, but determined to set a plan in motion that would end the threat posted by Patri and his followers. “I saw him with my own eyes, after all.”
Yami raised an eyebrow. “Even the pointy ears? He looks like an elf.”
“Yes, even the ears.” Julius sighed. “He was experimented on and tortured while in captivity. Subjected to things that… changed his very body.” His brow furrowed, his heart pained by the thought.
“...that’s the reason why he wanted to hand you over? To gain his freedom?” Charlotte Roselei, captain of the Blue Roses, asked, her eyes lingering on the picture. “Why didn’t Diamond just send one of their own assassins?”
“They’d rather have someone else do their dirty work,” Fuegoleon answered before Julius could answer. “It’s cruel… but that doesn’t forgive his actions.” Under the table, he clenched his fist. Because of Patri, Lisa and Sei both got hurt. I could have lost both of them. I’m thankful that it wasn’t more serious, but still… It would have hurt to see someone as young and promising as Lisa be killed, and Fuegoleon couldn’t even begin to comprehend how he would suffer if he lost Sei.
“...If his goal is truly to escape Diamond for good… then why don’t we just extend a pardon?”
Everyone’s heads snapped towards William, who sat at the other head of the table. As the captain of the Golden Dawn, the most decorated and illustrious squad in the Kingdom, he was highly respected by all, but right now the others weren’t sure that they believed he would suggest that.
Julius sighed, closing his eyes for a moment.
Patri…
He couldn’t help but remember the day Patri joined the squad, alongside William, Yami, Nacht, and Morgen. They were all so bright-eyed, so eager to prove themselves.
I failed all of them… in the end, I couldn’t protect Morgen, and I let Patri be taken away.
“It’s more than just escaping Diamond… Patri blames his pain entirely on me.”
As he should.
“To him, as long as this Kingdom survives, with me at the helm, his pain will never be avenged. This is larger than just me and him… we can’t let him continue. A pardon will do nothing but add insult to injury.”
Opening his eyes, Julius stared out at the captains, determination gripping his heart.
That’s right… I can’t let myself wallow in guilt. There are too many people depending on me, I can’t give up. I’m not innocent, but neither is anyone else.
And besides…
Lisa looked so beautiful in the moonlight.
I have a future now. One I need to preserve.
“You will make sure that your squads are all familiar with this man’s face. He can’t leave this kingdom, he has nowhere else to go. We know the names and faces of a few of his associates, as well, so it won’t be long before we corner the Eye of the Midnight Sun.”
The captains nodded, eager to find the man who had almost robbed them of their King.
“Julius! One moment!”
Julius turned around from where he had been saying goodbye to the captains as they filtered out of the conference room and left down the hall. Now, none other than Augustus was waddling towards him, beckoning him away from the door.
“Yes, of course.”
Julius quickly moved to meet the man. “How are you?”
“Fine, fine!” Augustus replied quickly. He seemed to be rushing to get to some point, almost too jovial. “Even better, now that I have a moment to chat with you!.” He chuckled, and Julius inadvertently bristled.
...he’s up to something, isn’t he?
“About the ball… I was worried at first about this woman of yours, but after talking to your cousins about her and her family, and then seeing her-” Augustus laughed again. “She was quite enchanting… you’re a lucky man, Julius.”
Julius chuckled nervously, wondering why Augustus had waited almost a week to bring this up. It was true, everything had gone according to plan; at least, that was what Augustus was letting on. Julius couldn’t help but wonder if the man was secretly suspicious still; the thought made his pulse quicken.
If Augustus knows something, then Lisa is in danger-
“In fact, you’re a little too lucky.”
Julius blinked, Augustus’s words grounding him once again. “...what do you mean?”
Augustus narrowed his eyes, twirling his pathetic little beard between two fingers. “I mean, don’t you think it’s improper for you to court a woman more beautiful than the one I am engaged to? I mean, my fiancee is pretty, but like I told you before, she’s tall, and pales in comparison to- er- what was Lady Payne’s first name?”
“...E-Elisabeth-” Julius replied slowly.
“Elisabeth! She’s simply divine… so…” Augustus finally smiled again, deviously. “I propose… the two of us trade. I marry Elisabeth, and you can take my fiancee.”
Julius sucked in a breath, immediately starting to get angry. “Switch? Augustus, that’s absurd-”
“I don’t think it’s absurd!” Augustus interrupted. “It’s more absurd for you to walk around with a pretty young wife on your arm while I’m stuck with a homely spinster!”
“Augustus,” Julius clenched his teeth, willing himself to stay calm. The mere fact that Augustus had been drinking Lisa up that evening like she was some sort of eye candy was enough to make him scream, paired with his willingness to cast aside his own fiancee on a whim. But he couldn’t lose his temper now, not when things were so delicate. “Our relationship is different. It wasn’t arranged, we are in love with each other.”
“That’s not a problem! Listen-” Augustus stepped closer, lowering his voice and reaching up to pat Julius’s shoulder. “It would really only be in name… you can see Elisabeth whenever and wherever you’d like! We would share… That’s what friends do, right? She would belong to you and all that… although...”
Julius looked down to see Augustus lick his lips slowly. It looked like some wretched slug was poking its head out from between his lips.
“She would still be my wife-”
It was instinctual. Julius’s hand reached up and grabbed Augustus’s arm, prying his hand off his shoulder. Augustus yelped at the pressure, trying to yank himself free. But he couldn’t; Julius’s grip was like a vice. Augustus looked up into the man’s eyes, and for the first time in his miserable life, felt true fear.
“...we aren’t friends.”
Julius’s voice was flat in comparison to the anger that swirled within his eyes. He looked down at the little man, and his grip clenched again. Augustus was too scared to cry out.
“Don’t ever bring this up with me again. It’s out of the question. And if I catch you looking at her… well. I’ve killed men for less.”
Julius didn’t want to say anything else, he didn’t even want to be in the man’s presence anymore. His grip loosened, and Augustus took many steps back. The man panted lightly, still in shock of what had just been said to him. But for the first time in his life, Augustus couldn’t find anything to say. He just stood there and watched as Julius stormed off down the hall and out of sight.
Share…
Today had been a relatively good day so far, despite the stressful meeting. Not only did they have to discuss the Eye of the Midnight Sun and Patri, but plans were made for a very important upcoming visit from the royal family of the Spade Kingdom. Everything ended up being squared away, but now Julius’s good mood was ruined.
Share… SHARE?!
He stomped up the stairs to his room, slamming the door behind him. Finally, he had some peace and quiet, but his mind was plagued by the interaction he just had. With a groan, Julius collapsed face-first into his bed, exhausted both mentally and physically.
Not only do I have to protect everyone in this Kingdom, but now I have to protect Lisa from that creep.
Even if everything went well, and Lisa came here to live with him as his wife, she wouldn’t be safe. Not 100%. Julius was never going to forget what Augustus said today.
Maybe I should go see her tonight.
He rolled onto his back, his head turning to look out the window. Seeing her would be the comfort he needed; To know that she was safe in his arms, the only place that he knew he could protect her all the time.
Of course, she didn’t need to be protected all the time, as Lisa often told him herself. She was a knight, after all.
........................................................
“Wraith’s here! Dinner time!”
All the Black Bulls suddenly dropped their weapons and ran to the front door of their barracks, all jostling against each other in the entrance trying to get in. Lisa blinked, standing awkwardly with the other knights from her squad, not sure if they were invited.
“Hold on! There’s enough for everyone! Haha-”
A short man had appeared, dragging a cart behind him, loaded with every vegetable you could imagine. The Bulls obviously all knew who he was as they swarmed around his cart. At one point, he looked up in time to spot the other squad standing there. “You guys come get some, too! You’ve all been working hard, after all.
“Awww we have to share?” the blonde young man with a perpetual smile, Luck, whined. Wraith shot him a warning glance before turning to smile at the Crimson Lions again. “Come on! I just harveseted these this morning. You can stick ‘em on a skewer and roast them over the fire pit if you want.”
“Go on. I’m sure you’re all hungry,” Sei encouraged, and his squad finally moved to join the Bulls around the cart. He smiled a bit before walking up next to Wraith. “Thanks for doing this.”
“No problem, this is supposed to be inter-squad bonding, right?” Wraith said. “There’s no better time to bond than over a meal.”
“Right.”
Lisa smiled to herself as she sat with the others around the fire pit, watching the skin of her sweet potato start to wrinkle as it was roasted. Everyone was in a good mood, still energetic from their vigorous training session. The light from the flames flickered pleasantly across their faces, the sky above them slowly shifting into night.
“Guess who?”
A pair of big hands suddenly reached out of the darkness behind Wraith to cover his eyes. He let out a yelp of surprise. “Yami?”
He turned around and grinned when he saw that Yami was back, a smug smile on his face. “Captain! Welcome back!” the Bulls chorused.
“Here- I saved some for you.” Wraith handed Yami a skewer as the man squeezed in next to him, one of his arms draped casually over the back of Wraith’s seat. “How was the meeting?”
“Boring. And top secret.” Yami winked. “I have news, though. The Grinberyall family is coming to visit this weekend. Something about signing a new defense treaty. But security is going to be tight.” His eyes glinted a bit in the flames as he looked at the faces of all those seated around him.
“The Grinberyalls? All the way from Spade?” Sei repeated in disbelief.
“And their whole court, apparently,” Yami added. “Julius said that each squad should send some knights to help keep everything under control.”
“OOOH! I want to go! Captain! Pick me!” Asta suddenly shouted, raising his hand and nearly bounding out of his seat. His mouth was still full of food.
“...we’ll see.” Yami rolled his eyes, suddenly spotting something interesting. “You there… what’s that creepy thing on your head?”
It took Lisa a moment to realize that she was being spoken to. “H-Huh? Me? OH-” She sat up straight, nearly choking on a bite of sweet potato. “Er- uh- it’s a birthmark- sorry if it’s creepy, sir-”
“Hey! Leave my squad members alone,” Sei cut in, kicking Yami in the leg. “That’s my job.”
“Fine. At ease,” Yami jokingly said, his eyes lingering on Lisa’s mark for a moment longer.
Lisa nodded, quickly redirecting her attention to her sweet potato. As the night went on and the fire dimmed, her mind shifted to a new set of thoughts.
I hope I get to go to the gathering…
