This is Woolly Bush (Adenanthos sericeus), a popular plant for parks and gardens in Australia, originally from the south coast of Western Australia. I call it "Rude Bush" though because whenever I see it I feel it is giving me fingers, hundreds of fingers... 🖕️

Cee’s FOTD-Coogee-9 December
Here is another leafy entry for todays Flower of the Day, there are microscopic red and yellow flowers on the Adenanthos and little white ones on the Sedge. At Coogee on Respite while Jessica was having very dangerous and risky Throat Surgery, (to remove a Thyroid cyst and Barr blocking her epiglottis) expecting the worse I wasn’t quite in the mood for respite, consider my surprise when the Ward…

Clarence goes through which Australian native plants thrive in pots. Subscribe 🔔 http://ab.co/GA-subscribe
Clarence has been out collecting a few Aussie natives. They can do pretty much anything in the garden, from providing shade, providing habitat, a beautiful feast, or just looking good. Even if you don’t have a place to plant in your garden, you can always pop them in a pot. There are lots of species more suited to grow in containers, and dwarf cultivars are a great choice for pots with their compact forms.
Many of our most beloved plants can be found in dwarf forms. Things like bottlebrush, Westringia, and some of our more spectacular Banksias, such as Birthday Candles. They all look sensation in compact forms.
Groundcovers don’t just have to grow on the ground! Things like scaevola or prostrate grevillea look great in a low-profile pot. Why not elevate them onto a wall or table where you can enjoy the habit even more. Planting a full-on floral display in a container means you can move them into view when they are at their peak. Things like kangaroo paw and paper daisies produce an abundance of blooms and are perfect for a sunny spot.
Its important to remember that even the hardiest species are completely reliant on you when you put them in a pot. Make sure you use a good quality free-draining soil mix and keep the watering up. It takes a lot of energy to produce these flowers, and even one day without water can make them droop or fall.
If you have your heart set on a particular plant for a pot, it will be fine if it responds well to pruning. There are lots of species to choose from, things like tea tree and woolly bush with their fantastic foliage are particularly well suited to a good prune. The trick is to prune early when they are nice and young, and prune regularly. Watch out for possums, they might try to do a bit of extra ‘pruning’! Tip pruning regularly is key, this can be done straight after flowering and again during main growth flushes.
When it comes to native containers, you don’t have to be contained! Grab a few of your favs and get potting.
Featured Plants:
COASTAL ROSEMARY  - Westringia fruticosa ‘Smokey’
BANKSIA  - Banksia spinulosa ‘Birthday Candles’
PALE FAN FLOWER  - Scaevola albida cv.
PROSTRATE GREVILLEA  - Grevillea lanigera cv.
KANGAROO PAW  - Anigozanthos cv.
PAPER DAISY  - Xerochrysum bracteatum cv.
WOOLLY BUSH  - Adenanthos cv.

Bum Rock from Healing Beach. Lots of 4wds on the tracks today, so I kept to the blocked off tracks and the Bibb. I enjoyed sitting on the warm granite above Healing beach beside the resilient white sticky tailflower bushes that can grow in the slenderest fissures in the rock. Their leaves are sticky and the flowers are aromatic, maybe these plants extract nurtients from passing caprtured small insects. As going to Bum Rock involves deeply furrowed 4wd tracks I set off west instead, following the blocked off tracks, on a quest to find the bunny orchid with the most blooms per stem = my record is eight (or six flowers and and two buds; or seven flowers). Adenanthos are so intriguing close up - we have three species all beloved of honey possums. Not too many hibbertia in flower right now, but insect life is thriving with ashy looking crickets #bibbulmuntrack #bumrock #lowlandsbeach

#1467 - Adenathos obovatus - Jugflower
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A red-flowering bush in the Proteaceae, endemic to the SW corner of Australia -  first described by French naturalist Jacques Labillardière in 1805, after collection by collected by Archibald Menzies in 1791.
Found on sandy soils in seasonally wet lowland areas, as well as on hills and dunes. It has anunderground lignotuber, from which it resprouts after bushfires. Pollinators include our wide range of honeyeaters, particularly the western spinebill, which can access the nectar with their long curved beaks, and the silvereye, which punctures the flower tube because it’s a thieving little bastard. Honey Possums are known to feed on the nectar, as well.
The most commonly cultivated Adenanthos species in Australia, and alsp harvested for the cut flower industry. Unfortunately, it’s also massively susceptible to Cinnamon Dieback, Phytophthora cinnamomi, and is also recorded as vulnerable to the fungus Armillaria luteobubalina .
In bushland in Hammond Park, Perth.
