#adelaide writers' week
Link
In footage of his virtual appearance at Adelaide Writers’ Week that was shared on the Israellycool blog, El-Kurd suggested he uses the loaded term to describe Israel because of the weight it carries in terms of shaping public opinion and admitted he is “less concerned with the accuracy of the word”:
I think what the word itself as a word — I’m not even talking about the legal definition of the word ‘apartheid’; I’m not talking about about the crime against humanity — but the negative word that is ‘apartheid’ and the negative connotation it carries in the psyche of the public. I think it’s capable, and it has been, engineering and establishing a cultural shift in the way people approach and talk about Palestine.
But I’m less concerned with the accuracy of the word. You know, me and my friends have these arguments about like, ‘it’s settler colonialism,’ ‘it’s apartheid,’ ‘it’s police brutality,’ ‘it’s ethnic cleansing, ‘it’s this, it’s that.’ I don’t care. As long as there is a conversation happening in which the villain is portrayed clearly, I think that’s good.”
The admission, which was made in front of a packed audience at the Australian arts festival, confirmed what many of us have long suspected: pro-Palestinian “activists” like El-Kurd do not care one iota about the truth when it comes to Israel — they are happy to spread demonstrable lies if doing so furthers their twisted anti-Israel agenda.

"Criticism of Israel is not the same as anti-Semitism, it is not a form of racism" and "Holy fucking shit, do you realize how insane you sound when you call Zelensky a Nazi-promoting Zionist, and this is totally fucking anti-semitism" are things that don't contradict each other.
In other news, an Australian Adelaide's Writers Week would rather host one Palestinian writer spewing Russian propaganda on social media than three Ukrainian writers that were forced to flee the war in Ukraine when Russia attacked.
Yeah, I dunno about you, but I would be more than just find it "uncomfortable" to have a "discussion" with someone who regrets you and your people just don't die fast enough to prevent WWIII. It's not an exchange of ideas when other side is justifying your genocide.

Have you read HR with the hero or heroine wearing glasses?
Yeah for sure!
Never Seduce a Duke by Vivienne Lorret--I think this one actually has a little poem about how the duke wears glasses lol.
Married by Morning by Lisa Kleypas--Catherine Marks wears glasses and Leo naturally wants to fuck her constantly. In Tempt Me at Twilight there's a moment when he fantasizes about her spread out naked and wearing her glasses after he's railed her. Then of course it goes "he decided to bother her" because it's them.
Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas--Sara wears glasses, and Derek Craven steals them because he's a freak like that.
(Also.... I need people to get reading comprehension because while I don't expect everyone to love this book, I recently brought this moment of as an example of how Derek is clearly stuck on Sara and doesn't understand the feeling and takes the glasses because he's obsessed and wants something of hers... And someone goes "I just thought he did that to be a tool". Jesus Christ people. Read between the lines, I fucking beg. Again, you don't have to like him, but for the sake of writers please try to understand subtlety and nuance lol.)
Lord of Darkness by Elizabeth Hoyt. Godric wears glasses, and also wears a sleeping outfit that sounds like he's Ebeneezer Scrooge.
One Good Earl Deserves a Lover by Sarah MacLean. Pippa wears glasses and is a general scientist type. I think Adelaide may wear glasses at points in Heartbreaker as well?
The Truth About Cads and Dukes by Elisa Braden. I'm not 10000% certain, but I think Jane wears glasses. Either way, dude, Harrison is ready to bend her over a table at any given moment.
A Week to Be Wicked by Tessa Dare. I can't remember if Minerva wears glasses or is just a massive nerd, but I think she does wear them.
The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian. I think Kit wears glasses.

A reintroduction to writeblr
Callista Van Allen is a professional speechwriter near Washington, D.C. Between her personal and professional life, she's been writing for more than a decade. Alrighty, let's go with "🍦 ⇢ name three good things about a character you hate" then, and also "🕯️ ⇢ on a scale from 1 to 10, how much do you enjoy editing? why is that?" because that was a really interesting ask! And, to round it out: 🍄 ⇢ share a head canon for one of your favourite ships or pairings
YESSSSS these are good ones! Thank you so much!!
(from the Writers Truth & Dare Ask Game)
I have pictures for the good things about a character I hate, so I'm going to save the Show & Tell for the end. I don't want my other answers to get lost in the crowd :P
▪ On a scale from 1 to 10, how much do you enjoy editing? Why is that?
I LOVE EDITING!!! These days at least. I never really hated it in the past... but I also rarely got far enough in the writing process to reach the editing stage 😬
Because see, I used to try and combine the drafting and editing processes into one. It's taken me FAR TOO LONG to finally grasp that writing is done through layers. You can't write third draft content and quality the first time around. You just can't! And understanding the layers and having a full year (plus) under my belt of witnessing the editing process in motion has really made me fall in love with it.
And on the flip side, it's also made me love drafting more! Or at the very least made it less stressful for me because I don't have to worry about missing information or wording or capturing the emotions accurately. I can just dump the information from my brain and spend the next two weeks cleaning it up. It's great! 10/10 big fan of editing! 😄
▪ Share a headcanon for one of your favorite ships or pairings
Hmmmm......... I'm trying desperately to think of headcanons for my past ships that Tumblr cares about, but it's only Lucifer in my head right now.
My Warehouse 13 opinions and feelings haven't changed in the last decade which means my headcanons haven't either. This is a problem if I was ever going to go back and write canon fix-its like I did with Doctor Who because I still don't know how to solve the puzzle of Helena. What do we do with her after the S3 finale? What's the long-term plan for her? I can see Regent for her, like many have suggested, but that's never been my favorite option. A field agent again? Maybe, but can she ever really heal still working for the warehouse in that capacity? I'm not sure. But we can't remove her from the warehouse altogether (at least if you're a Bering and Wells shipper) because Myka's not leaving ever. She's going to take over as head agent one day when Artie (very reluctantly but also a little proudly) becomes the first agent -- possibly ever! -- to retire from the warehouse alive.
So then what do we do with Helena????
I still don't have an answer to that. The best one I have is the same one I thought of ten years ago which is to make HG the resident inventor eccentric who only goes out into the field when she's absolutely needed. Think Claudia in S1, except staying in is by choice and not mandated by Artie for being too young and inexperienced.
But I also really like HG mentoring kids. As much as Instinct otherwise sucks, I did really, really love her with Adelaide so idk what future fits her best ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
.
AND NOW FOR THE SHOW AND TELL!!!!!! Which is 100% about the TV show Lucifer and I won't apologize for that because no other show has a character I hate more.
▪ Three Good Things about Cain from Lucifer (TV) Despite Me Hating His Guts
First of all, who is Cain from Lucifer (TV)?
Tumblr media
IT'S THIS BITCH RIGHT HERE!!! And no I don't hate his guts because he's the villain of S3. I HATE HIM BECAUSE HE'S BORING AS THE VILLAIN! Like yeah yeah yeah, the guy invented murder. BUT HIS BIGGEST CRIME IS BEING BORING!!!!
He also canonically dated (and was even engaged to) Chloe for all of four episodes total (maybe?) and it was PURE TORTUROUS HELL, but I attribute that crime to the writers more than Cain. IDEK what the fuck they were trying to do with that storyline but I want to fight them in a Denny's parking lot over it. With knives.
And now that we've established why I hate him so much, here's some good things about Cain.
1. He has a rock collection
Tumblr media
I am not being snarky in the slightest when I say that I absolutely ADORE that he canonically has a giant ass rock collection. And when I say giant ass rock collection, I do not mean that piddly sample you can see in the screencap above. I mean, every flat surface in his house is covered in rocks. You walk into his kitchen? His counters are probably rocks. They're everywhere! But they're also nicely displayed??? He has stands for some of them to better show them off! He probably has a whole system surrounding which rocks get grouped together. And given how much he moves around since he's a cursed immortal being, he has to pack all of these fucking rocks up, move to the new place, and then re-set them all up again. THAT'S HYSTERICAL TO ME! What a fucking fixation to give him! They should've fully committed and leaned into this bit instead of just barely slipping it into this one episode.
Also 1000% fact, the rock he used to kill his brother is in that collection somewhere. I don't know which one it is or where he keeps it. But it is DEFINITELY there!
Anyway Cain's rock collection: 12/10 A++ no criticism from me XD
2. This Caincore tumblr post
Tumblr media
I just reblogged it yesterday too. LOOK! Does it have anything to do with the tv show Lucifer? Technically, no. Is it hilarious though? Absolutely yes! Also it says Cain's name so that makes it the second best thing about Cain 😜 😂
And finally....
3. He has the hottest mother in the history of humanity
Tumblr media
EVE!!!!!!! 😍 My beloved!! 😍 Definitely hands down one of the best things I can say about Cain? HIS MOTHER IS GORGEOUS!! *swoons*
Her son can't do anything right, but Eve? Oh Eve can do no wrong 💜💜💜 (Yes, that includes dating Lucifer and then accidentally-definitely-on-purpose starting a demon mutiny when he dumps her. LET MY GIRL HAVE FEELINGS OKAY! Geez!)
And that's all three good things I can say about Cain in the TV show Lucifer. The only other thing I could possibly say is he's dead, but I'm not sure that's in the spirit of the question LOL

The F@tT Fic Marathon: 141-160
Tumblr media
Despite having two essays due next week, and generally much more going on my life right now than I did last week, I'm starting to get into a rhythm of roughly 10 fics read per day! several marked-unfinished fics in this batch, notably including like THREE collections of snippets from authors that have plenty of completed fics elsewhere in the tag. I'd honestly recommend skimming through those collections to see if there's anything of interest to you, as there are some nice bits in there, but otherwise here are the stand outs:
my knives and my heart up my sleeves by Yellow - this hit a good sweet spot of pre-canon samsam being in love and messy and also casually terrifying via godly power. I enjoyed it, so check it out!
it's a bit funny to me that this project keeps getting me to share and recommend smutty/explicit fic but- well. that's how it is sometimes
as the hours draw down by shipyrds - hella focused with both hella/adaire and hella/adelaide
where we last left off by placentalmammal (biglizard) - fascinated by the background implied by this one, amusing and hot
walk all over you by mercutioes - btw shout out to mercutioes to writing 20% of the fics from this set! most of it is smutty so this is an appropriate rec to celebrate and shout out a specific author
(if you've been paying attention to reocurring authors we've got a pretty healthy set of regular fatt writers by the latter half of 2017, and I think I've recommended at least one thing from most of them by now)
words read: 58,302 (442,726 total)
works remaining: 1,745

Solarpunk Writing Prompts #6
Here you can listen to original podcast
Here is the source of the podcast's transcript you can read below
Solarpunk Prompts - The Experts
Hello world. I'm Tomasino.
This is Solarpunk Prompts, a series for writers where we discuss Solarpunk, a movement that imagines a world where technology is used for the good of the planet.
It seeks to answer and embody the question, "what does a sustainable civilization look like, and how can we get there?”
In this series we spend each episode exploring a single Solarpunk story prompt adding some commentary, some inspirations, and some considerations.
Most importantly, we consider how that story might help us to better envision a sustainable civilization.
If this is your first time here, I'd recommend checking out our introduction episode first, where we talk about what Solarpunk is, why you should care, and why this series came into being.
Today's prompt is: "The Experts"
There is a community of very specialized experts. Only a handful exist in the whole world. They are normally hermits, focused on maintaining long-forgotten infrastructure. But their community exists across the internet. They consider themselves a family, even if each of them speaks a different language, and comes from a different culture. And once a blue moon they can even physically visit each other.
Over the last three years many of us have faced some level of undesirable isolation. And with that barest taste we can start to imagine the great sense of loneliness felt by those who work alone for weeks, months, or years at a time.
These people exist in our world today. Jessie Panazzolo was a 26 year old conservationist with an honors degree from Adelaide University who had been working in conservation since she was 14. After a particularly difficult 6-month assignment, she returned home distraught, alone, and defeated. While having drinks with another friend from the conservationist community she found a kindred spirit suffering in the same ways. She thought, “if I’m a lonely conservationist and she’s a lonely conservationist, how many are out there in the world?" And so she started a blog. Lonely Conservationists. In a year it brought in more than 2,500 members. One member called it "global group therapy that you can always access". They share job postings, memes, mental health posts, and support.
In a career of passion work often for little to no pay, with grueling work in sometimes harsh conditions, these people provide a vital service to underfunded NGOs the world over. Their staying power is built upon their compassion and personal drive and belief in their work. But even the most passionate person has struggles, doubts, and experiences the draining loneliness of isolation. So communities like Jessie's are not just a place to relax or talk about their work. They're a vital piece of the infrastructure of that domain. They are a scaffolding that allows connectivity to the unconnected.
Caroline Woodward writes from the Lennard Island Lightstation near Tofino, B.C.
Here is a small excerpt from a piece she contributed to the Globe and Mail in 2020:
Since 2008, I've been paid to watch clouds, among other things, and the criteria for my reports are precise: clear, partly cloudy, cloudy, overcast, partly obscured or obscured. No mariner or aviator needs to hear about white horses flying as high as the stars or the grumpy giants I see among the cirrus and cumulonimbus. Or to know I heard the first saasin, Nuu-chah-nulth for hummingbird, among the salmonberry blossoms yesterday. I file weather reports to Prince Rupert Coast Guard Radio every three hours based on the state of the sky, the sea, the wind, intensity of rain, density of fog and the possibility of showers glowering on the horizon.
But if we didn't have access to the internet, I could not write and work at a lighthouse in the 21st century. That’s my deal-breaker.
She is the author of Light Years: Memoir of a Modern Lighthouse Keeper a book you didn't know you wanted to read until this very moment.
There are others: rangers, anti-poaching activists, and so many more who live their lives in the fringes of society, set apart, alone. And for more and more, they are finding new kinships and community within the internet.
The heart of this prompt isn't the isolation of these experts, but the way they've created a new type of family across vast distances and in spite of differences in language and culture. In a science fiction setting we hear the word isolation and we think of Andy Weir. We think of the Martian or Project Hail Mary, and how science triumphs in these lonely settings. But I caution you, and remind you of our first guideline for Solarpunk. "Community as protagonist".
You see, community is community, whether it's around a camp fire, or across a terminal. The opportunity for us as writers is to make that something the reader can feel. How do you feel close, intimate even, with people who rarely, if ever, see each other's faces?
We can look to the gut-wrenching personal blog posts on the Lonely Conservationists, sharing mental health challenges, eating disorders, financial struggles, and more. These posts are not just stories, they are counseling, they are therapy. They give each other hope, or cry together. In some cases they survive because of one another.
It's the shared challenges that unite them. The shared experiences of hardship.
When we take that into a Solarpunk context and think about how this might be told, there are a few hooks that stand out. Any work that these experts are doing which is oriented toward making humanity live in balance with their ecosystem is on theme. If they are establishing or maintaining infrastructure vital to this mission, then we see a direct illustration of our second guideline: Infrastructure is sexy, but there are no simple solutions. Like Caroline you too can bring the poet to the machine. Show the reader the sublime beauty in that work, in the mundane, and in nature. And in their struggles we will see that cost, willingly paid.
The aspect of the story which holds the most potential, though, is the internet community. Play it straight and explore the hows of the connectivity, or the origins of why. Was it for something else, but now has been converted to this purpose? There's much to explore.
Or, alternatively, we can play with the reader's expectations. Perhaps our future lightkeeper is leaving notes for the day shift, only for us to find much later that day shift is 4,000 miles away.
How does that community empower the individuals? How does it feel to be a part of it?
Thanks for being part of my community and joining me for these episodes. How are they affecting you?
I'll talk to you soon on the next Solarpunk Prompt.
Music in this recording is Twin Dragoon - Hidden in brightness from Global Pattern's compilation Solarpunk: A Brighter Perspective

Biography
In 2015 I was awarded first place in the prose section for the Young Writers Award held by SAETA. I wrote a piece called "My Old Friend" which you can read here.
I graduated from St Aloysius College in 2020 with an interest in fashion, photography, writing and art. I also excelled in Stage 1 and 2 French, and even got to participate in an exchange program in 2018 where I spent 7 weeks in Paris!
In 2022-2023 I began studying a Diploma of Graphic Design at Torrens University, however I only completed two semesters due to a change of interest in career pathways. I decided I wanted to pursue writing instead of digital design, which leads me to the Bachelor of Creative Industries at UniSA.
Since graduating high school I have been working all over the 'hospo' industry in Adelaide, with my humble beginnings working the drive-through at McDonald's West Terrace, watching families grow at Local Crowd (a quaint suburban cafe just outside of the city), curating skincare routines for my friends as a Summer host at MECCA, slinging cocktails at 1000 Island (a tiki-cocktail bar), to now pouring wines from all over the world at Alt. (a wine bar in Hyde Park).

Hey MAMArtist* KELLY CERVANTES!
Tumblr media
What are the ages of your child(ren), and where do you live?
Jackson, 11 + Adelaide, would be 8yo but passed away in 2019 days before her fourth birthday + Anessa, 4. We live in Maplewood, NJ.
How do you describe your art practice?
I am an writer and public speaker. I write shorter blog pieces and have published a book. I also speak at events and for various companies across the country.
Who is your artistic crush?
Author, Christie Tate (Group and BFF). She is a brilliant writer who tells it exactly as it is - I've never read such honest and real writing before finding her books. She also happens to be an incredibly generous person who helped me along the way without ever having met me. Bonus - she is also a mom!
What is a superpower Mother+Artists have?
Well, you can always rely on a mother to sh*t done, and that applies to her work as an artist as well. But perhaps even more powerful is our empathy. Never underestimate a mother+artist's ability to love and understand another human's trial and then turn that into relatable art for all to experience and learn from.
You have something exciting coming up! PLEASE SAY MORE ABOUT IT! I just published my first book, Normal Broken: The Grief Companion For When It's Time To Heal But You're Not Sure You Want To, and it is a USA Today bestseller! Following the death of my daughter Adelaide from a neurodegenerative disease just days before her fourth birthday, I felt irrevocably shattered by the loss. I was broken. Through connecting with others and myself through writing I learned that not only is grief not linear, but we all grieve differently. It took me years to want to heal, which was the impetus for writing Normal Broken, because every other grief book I picked up assumed I wanted to heal and I didn't. I thought grief meant letting go of my daughter, or moving on without her. What I would eventually learn is that healing actually meant remembering and moving forward with her. That I would never be the person I was again before she died and that's OK. I would always be broken, but that I could learn to be Normal Broken.
How did motherhood directly, indirectly, oppositionally or integrally influence this project? Having lost my daughter (and a pregnancy at 21 weeks), this book is integrally tied to being a mother. However, it was important to me to write a book that was accessible to people grieving all kinds of loss: be it a physical person, parent, spouse, friend - or grieving a dream, job, or person who is very much alive but no longer in our lives. Grief is grief is grief. Comparing our trials and losses serves no one. So yes, I lost my child and this book wouldn't exist without my daughter - without me being a mother - but that doesn't make my loss greater or less than anyone else's.
What are you currently reading or listening to that is giving you thoughts, feelings and reactions?
I am currently reading Meghan Riordan Jarvis' End of The Hour, which is a stunningly beautiful memoir, and I am listening to Grief is Love by Marisa Renee Lee, which is exposing me to the ways culture and race can impact the way we grieve. So... lots of grief books, but mostly memoirs because I love learning as much as I can about the human experience.
Any message for Mother+Artists reading this?
I read something recently that spoke to how women often think that if they are able to accomplish something then it must have been easy. GIVE YOURSELF CREDIT FOR ALL YOU DO! Surviving as an artist is not easy, motherhood certainly isn't easy - combine the two of them and we should all be celebrating every achievement, no matter the perceived size, along the way. Take a dance break, pop the bubbly, announce it on social media, whatever you need to do to acknowledge and celebrate you! Because whatever it is you've done, it definitely wasn't easy.
BEST LINKS to find you and your work!

Happy 30th Birthday August!! It's my favourite mixed-race bisexual's birthday today!
Born on 31 August 1993, a week late, but still named after the month she was due. August Tandi-Andersen (she/her) is the child of Dr. Faye Tandi (she/her) and Mx. Alf Andersen (he/they).
She's currently a writer and literature tutor living in Adelaide, SA, Australia. She did finally release her short fiction collection about that fateful January summer break of 2011.
Under A Summer Sky In January is that summer break.
More about it HERE
