“I didn’t come running all this way for your condolences,” Adelaide huffs. “I would like something a little more substantial.”
Robert’s brow furrows. “Substantial…?”
“Sir Robert Blyth, I’d like to propose a marriage.”
If Adelaide could bottle up Robert’s surprise, she’s absolutely certain she could make a killing. Unfortunately, she’s no magician; the power of it all is reserved just for her, in this moment, and will live on only in her memory.
(In which Miss Morrissey settles her own affairs, seeing as no one else sees fit to leave things as they are.)

The last bit is deeply reassuring to me, whose first thought after finishing book three’s epilogue was “this was perfection and I love this group of seven queer radicals” and second thought was “oh god WWI is in FOUR YEARS.”
Hello! I just finished reading A Power Unbound, and firstly I wanted to tell you that I love this trilogy so, so much. I recommend A Marvellous Light to basically everyone I meet, and I was SO excited for this last book upon learning Ross and Hawthorn were the main couple. It did not disappoint!! I'd loved Hawthorn from his first scene in AML and him getting his own book and romance made me so happy. So THANK YOU for these wonderful characters and beautiful books, I'm very much looking forward to your future writing!
I did have a couple questions, if you had answers you're at all willing to share. Hawthorn stan that I am, I'm also fascinated by the drama that is Edwin/Hawthorn lmao, I think that sort of doomed relationship is so delicious. Have you written or would you ever write anything prequel-y about them? A short story or the like? If not, is there anything you brainstormed up about them that didn't make it into the books?
Secondly, do Edwin and Robin ever find out that Ross wrote the Roman books? Because that would be such a funny scene.
Thank you again, and thank you for answering the asks about this series you've gotten here, I love reading your responses and learning more about the books/your writing process :D
hello! thank you so much!
I'm skipping a few asks ahead in the queue to answer this one, because I think my answer will apply to (and hopefully anticipate) some other asks: if it's not in the books or any other Official Published Content, then I'm mostly not going to comment on events that happened offpage or may happen offpage in the future*.
as a fanwriter myself, and as an author who's made the decision to engage with readers on a predominantly fannish platform... I prefer not to come down all Word Of God and deny readers or fans the pleasure of coming up with their own answers. whether you intend to write fanfic about it or just happily develop your own headcanons: the text is out there, so it's yours now!
so the answers to 'what was edwin and jack's relationship like' and 'do edwin and robin ever find out about alan's books' are both: whatever you want it to be. whatever the next fanwriter wants it to be.
*the only exception to this is: yes, they all survive world war one, I'm not a monster

Summary:
Christmas, 1909.
Alan was doing his level best to hide it, but his teeth were chattering. Jack could hear it like typewriter keys. He had his usual cap pulled down tight on his head, and a scarf that was clearly homemade tucked over his chin, so that his beautiful, insolent expression was all Jack could see of him. He looked like the world’s most indignant owl, and Jack had the ludicrous desire both to laugh and to become every branch on every tree, that he might perch upon.
He settled for draping his arms over Alan’s shoulders and pulling him into his chest. Far more sensible.
“Comfortable, your lordship?” Alan mocked, coat-muffled, as Jack’s cheek rested against the rough wool of his cap.
“Hardly. I’m liable to develop a wretched crick in my neck.”

Read recently: A Power Unbound by Freya Marske
What I was looking for: Because I was interested in the magical mystery, I wanted to give this series another shot even though the second book was a DNF for me. Though I nearly stopped right after the first sentence (“Elsie Alston’s running feet hit the grass like pale secrets” – what is that supposed to mean?).
Thoughts: The book suffers from all the things that annoyed me in the first two books: boring language (e.g. the author only knows two words for penis, the people only refer to sex as fucking – too much crude language is not exciting to me but uninteresting), the couple dynamic is always the same (I get bored with all the couples always arguing as the only means of adding (sexual) tension). Strange similes and metaphors with baffling use of adjective-noun combinations (probably the author tried for flowery language “... despite her dark skin she had an accent you could see your reflection in.”). Also, of course Alan also has some super-special powers relating to the magical world (everybody has to have a special power).
But the magical mystery was interesting enough to keep me going. And while, as other reviewers pointed out, the new magic system is still deeply unfair and rooted in class, I did like the resolution in general. The house search in Spinet House was fun to read and I liked Cheetham Hall and the walks around the land. However, within the (old) magic system, the secret bind spell is just totally overpowered. Only one magician needs to apply it, it did not seem to cost that magician too much (not more than other spells), it kills the recipient before they can reveal the secret and there is no way to get rid of it?
I cannot speak for the accuracy of the other things in the time period, but to me the people acted extremely 21st century regarding their sexual orientation. I cannot believe that they would all be so extremely open and sometimes even public about their same-sex attractions. Though I do understand that this would have made for a rather different set of books if these things would have been addressed more. Still, it did not felt very accurate to the time period. I assume the “dark times to come” that are hinted at several times refers to the Great War, as this prophecy is not further addressed in the current set of novels.
The highlight of the book, as with the first novel in the series, was again Adelaide Morrissey.
Conclusion: I read the book, I finished the series. I would have enjoyed it much more if not for the romance plots.

I'd argue it's worth reading. Historical context, magic, gay people, spice, semi-sentient houses. Oh and just. Adelaide Morrissey. Is herself a selling point for the series.
is it weird that my closing thoughts on book one are that i need to introduce piper to sutton cottage from tlb and see what those two houses do to each other?
I'm sorry, I understand none of that lol
