Comparing Disney's Sleeping Beauty to the classic Fairy Tale
The retcon of Maleficent as Aurora's maternal figure hits me really hard because in the 1959 disney film Malefocent said "beloved by all who know her" which should have affected Maleficent as well. More adaptations could take liberty with the gifts from Fairies or wise women because they were very vague. The original film was pulling from the Perrault and Grimm versions, While I believe the Maleficent movie referenced a modern ideal of "health and happiness" that was not present in the Perrault or Grimm versions. In the Grimm version one of the twelve fairies (actually wise women in this version) bestowed virtue, beauty, riches, and whatever there is in the world to wish for. The gift of health and happiness was added in contemprary editions of Sleeping Beauty that I could only find in school materials.
Using the logic of the original movie to create a twist was very fulfilling and provided enough material for a new film. Ultimately making Aurora's biggest opposition her greatest protector.

Grow in grace, grow in beauty, beloved by all who know her, and on her 16th birthday she would prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die - from Maleficent

The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood by Charles Perrault
...the fairies began to bestow their gifts upon the princess. The youngest ordained that she should be the most beautiful person in the world; the next, that she should have the temper of an angel; the third, that she should do everything with wonderful grace; the fourth, that she should dance to perfection; the fifth, that she should sing like a nightingale; and the sixth, that she should play every kind of music with the utmost skill.
It was now the turn of the aged fairy. Shaking her head, in token of spite rather than of infirmity, she declared that the princess should prick her hand with a spindle, and die of it. A shudder ran through the company at this terrible gift. All eyes were filled with tears.
But at this moment the young fairy stepped forth from behind the tapestry.
"Take comfort, your Majesties," she cried in a loud voice. "Your daughter shall not die. My power, it is true, is not enough to undo all that my aged kinswoman has decreed. The princess will indeed prick her hand with a spindle. But instead of dying she shall merely fall into a profound slumber that will last a hundred years. At the end of that time a king's son shall come to awaken her."
Sleeping Beauty (Little Briar Rose) by Brothers Grimm
...the queen bore a daughter so beautiful that the king could not contain himself for joy, and he ordained a great feast. Not only did he bid to it his relations, friends, and acquaintances, but also the wise women, that they might be kind and favorable to the child. There were thirteen of them in his kingdom, but as he had only provided twelve golden plates for them to eat from, one of them had to be left out.
...the wise women stood forward to present to the child their wonderful gifts: one bestowed virtue, one beauty, a third riches, and so on, whatever there is in the world to wish for. And when eleven of them had said their say, in came the uninvited thirteenth, burning to revenge herself, and without greeting or respect, she cried with a loud voice: "In the fifteenth year of her age the princess shall prick herself with a spindle and shall fall down dead." And without speaking one more word she turned away and left the hall. Everyone was terrified at her saying, when the twelfth came forward, for she had not yet bestowed her gift, and though she could not do away with the evil prophecy, yet she could soften it, so she said: "The princess shall not die, but fall into a deep sleep for a hundred years."

Children of Heaven
Remember this? This was one of the better movies by Jack Neo right? I haven't seen this because it's an adaptation of a Iranian movie titled "Children of Heaven" and I remember watching this late at night on TV when I was about 12 years old.
Watch "Children of Heaven"!

That's all that's left. Fifty-seven pages of research, two bottles of morphine and one ticket back to the Capital. The train departs at dusk.
An illustration for a Patho AU inspired by Bulgakov I'll probably never write properly but it's been worming in my brain for over two years now.

6 Key Ways the Schizoid False Self Varies Among Individuals
The concept of the "schizoid false self" is a fundamental aspect when seeking to understand the dynamics of schizoid personality disorder, schizoid adaptations. Essentially, the false self is a psychological facade that individuals develop as a protective mechanism. It acts as a social persona, enabling a person to engage with the external world without exposing their true self. This mechanism is particularly common in individuals with schizoid dynamics, who often feel a disconnect between their internal experiences and external social interactions. In this article, we explore the various ways the schizoid false self differs from one individual to another, highlighting the diversity and complexity of this psychological phenomenon...
1. Background and Upbringing:
The formation of the false self in schizoid individuals is heavily influenced by their early life experiences. Factors such as family dynamics, parental styles, and early social interactions shape how the false self develops. Growing up in a more socially diverse or socially supportive environment may lead to a more socially adept false self, whereas a more challenging socially deprived upbringing can result in a false self that has greater difficulty adapting to different social settings.
2. Adaptive Functionality:
There's a wide range in the adaptability of the false self among schizoid individuals. Some may possess a highly versatile false self, capable of navigating various social scenarios with ease. These individuals will be adept at interacting socially with a 'covert schizoid' presentation. Others might have a more basic version of false self social functionality, which can restrict their ability to adapt socially and increase feelings of isolation. These individuals will be more apparently disconnected from others socially, and have a more 'overt schizoid' presentation.
3. Cultural Influences:
The cultural context plays a significant role in shaping the schizoid false self. In cultures that prize individualism, the false self might be more distinct and individualistic. Conversely, in societies that emphasize conformity, the false self may be crafted to blend in seamlessly with societal norms.
4. Alignment with the True Self:
The congruence between the false self and the true self varies. When there's close alignment, the false self serves as an effective medium for social interaction, this means having a false self that is 'ego-syntonic'. However, a significant disparity between the two can lead to internal conflict and a profound sense of living a dual life, indicating a false self that is 'ego-dystonic'.
5. Social Exposure and Experience:
The nature and extent of social exposure influence the development of the false self. Varied and positive social experiences tend to foster a more flexible and resilient false self, while limited or negative social experiences might result in a more inflexible and vulnerable false self.
6. Impact on Relationships:
The influence of the false self on relationships differs widely. For some, it acts as a hindrance to forming deep connections. For others, particularly when the false self aligns with their genuine interests and values, it can be a bridge to meaningful relationships.
In summary, recognizing these variations helps in understanding the intricate nature of the schizoid personality dynamics. The false self is not a one-size-fits-all facade but a multifaceted and dynamic construct that reflects the unique ways individuals navigate their inner and outer worlds.

I get why they had Gran Gran give Katara the scroll, it fits narratively while getting it to her quickly and without needing a pirates side quest.
I also get that the writers and showrunner had no control over episode count and target runtime and there's already not enough room for the show to breath.
But... cutting out Katara stealing the scroll while ALSO cutting out the Haru and eartbenders plot AND cutting out her teaching Aang waterbending along the way (which i dont get they could have shown that with like just a few short scenes in a couple episodes so we knew it was happening) meant that she doesn't really do much until she gets to the North. Except for the Jet interaction,
"That wasn't you.. that was me" (golden, thats my girl)
She just didn't have a while lot of purpose or drive until the end, and the end was great but I wanted more.
I really hope they get an increased episode count for Book 2

All I wanted was a semi faithful adaptation of the Percy Jackson series, and I really gave this show a chance, but after episode 6, I have to admit that this isn't it. Where was the creepy, mind numbing fun of the casino? Where was the casino that could make even the most powerful demigods forget everything? Where was the trio's interaction with the casino? Why was there so much exposition? What possible reason was there to change it so that the trio MISSES the deadline? Rick Riordan sold this show as a more faithful adaptation to the books and it's not.
