I can't believe it's been five years.

I remember watching this stream. On the way to work, at work, falling asleep to it, waking up to post teeth gang nonsense. Seeing Cher and Neil Gaiman tweet about it.

Harry's second channel has the whole thing. Every year on the anniversary I watch it. Every year I'm awake for different parts of it. One day I'll see all of it.

Before this stream I had lost hope. My local community had been devastated by anti trans and anti gay legislation and mainstream radio/news. We faced a world that was openly hostile to us. We still do, but we had much less visible solidarity out there. Hbomberguy and his stream brought me so much joy and life over those few days, I dined out on that feeling for at least a year. It was a beautiful thing to watch unfold.

This thing was epic. Not only did he raise money but he built community and solidarity and with a chat containing folding ideas pio Shaun sterling AOC paris Adamruinseverything Chelsea Shannon crystal & philosophytube to name a few (plus a variety of trans and non-binary people just getting to go on and tell their stories and talk and share) plus there was a skeleton!

People came together to bring joy back into the world.

My heart grew three sizes that day.

So if you only know him from his Somerton or Tommy videos, at least watch the talk above, maybe dip into his other videos, do the yearly re-watch of the stream if you feel like it, perhaps donate to mermaids or Trevor project or whatever local charity or community you have in your area.

Adam Ruins Everything and Crash Course

When I am looking for some quick hits of knowledge along with something lovely to look at visually, I am always drawn to two places:

Crash Course, which is a YouTube channel that was started by The Vlog Brothers from way back when if you’re that old to remember. If you’re not, it was started by that Author that wrote The Fault in our Stars. Yeah, yeah yeah, you’re saying the name and I’m agreeing. HANK GREEN! There it is.

I go to Crash Course when I want to refresh my history. There’s just a great overview of world and then American history. I suggest starting with world. And there’s also an excellent mythology section that groups religions together according to their commonalities. For example, when discussing death, you can discuss all religions’ views on death. It’s fantastic, and I learned so much. We don’t talk about religion in that way very much.

There are also other sections, but I find myself turning to these because I enjoy the subject matter (I am Autistic, after all), and I can immerse myself in these and start to retain the information as well as enjoy the little jokes.

And the other place is watching Adam Conover on Adam Ruins Everything. I know it might seem cheesy--white dude explaining stuff, but it scratches a really great itch for me. Distilling down complex information into entertaining bits that educate and keep people wanting to learn more. I love the show on a meta-level--that it cites its sources on screen during the how and has experts on as guests. I love it.

It also covers a wide range of topics, so I can feel like I know a little bit about a lot of things. That makes me a good teammate on a trivia team.

Anyway, that’s just a tiny bit about me, an #actuallyautistic Adult, and parent.
