Fight
Hailey upton x Rome Green-Upton
Summary: while Rome is undercover he get a call from torres telling him his wife was missing dropping everything he leaves and goes back to Chicago to help the team find his wife
Hailey was at her locker, packing her stuff, when her phone started ringing, making Hailey look at her phone with a small smile when she saw Rome's name. Rome and Hailey have been communicating, but sadly, not as much as they wanted to.
"Hey," Hailey said as she answered her phone. She grabbed her bag and walked out of the locker room. "Hey!" Rome said, sounding tired. "You sound tired," Hailey said, causing Rome to chuckle a little. "Yeah, I am, but how is the training going? Is it helping you sleep?" Rome asked, knowing that Hailey had been having trouble since he and Jay left. He felt guilty that not long after Jay left he had to go undercover, which he didn't really have a choice of.
"Not really," Hailey said with a sigh as she reached her truck. "I will be home soon, before you know it," Rome said. "I know," Hailey said. Rome went to say something but was cut off when he heard knocking on his door. "I've got to go," Rome said, sitting up. "Me too; I'll talk to you later tonight," Hailey said. "Night," Rome said, hanging up.
Rome didn't know that after that call, after a few hours, Hailey went missing.
~~~
A day later
Hank walked into the tech room, where the team was sitting. "All right, tell me we've got something we can use." Hank said, stopping behind the chair and looking at the screen. "The footage is too grainy to make out much, except for the stats of our offenders." Trudy told Hank There's no sign of the offenders' vehicle in the footage, and there are too many blind spots on PODs. I mean, I can't follow them." Kim spoke in a stressed tone. "OK, what about him, the victim?" Hank asked and pointed at the screen. Kim zoomed in, saying, "That's not enough, not for facial rec." kevin said
"All right, then her car, cell towers, witnesses, and forensics." Hank said he was walking to the other side. "We've got nothing we can use, boss." Adam said as Dante walked in. "I think I got him. I pulled Upton's cell records," Dante stated as he reached the others. "The last incoming call was from a phone registered to Lee Byers," Dante said, handing everyone Lee's file. "The duration of the call was two minutes, and then minutes later, her phone was off. Multiple priors for drug possession. He was arrested six years ago by Jay Halstead and Rome green. Two days after he got pinched, all three charges were dropped." dante continued
"So Halstead and Green flipped him." Hank said, "Guy's a CI." Hank added, holding the folder up. "Upton must have taken over as his handler; she was meeting him for a tip, and one of them was followed." Trudy said, putting the dots together, "All right, so get his phone dump, grab his CI file, run everyone this guy ever informed on, met, talked to, or ever walked by." Hank said, and the team started to move around. "We got an LKA on this guy?" Hank asked Torres. "He lives with his girlfriend, Jessica Owens, down on Humboldt." Dante answered
"Search her place. Bring her in." Hank said he was making the team, but Dante stopped. "Should we call Rome?" Dante asked, making the team stop and look at Hank. Hank turns around and nods his head.
~~~
Rome had been undercover for months, and he was starting to get tired of it. He missed Hailey and his team, and all he wanted was to be with Hailey. What sucked is that Rome was only 2 hours away, but he was dealing with a really dangerous situation and didn't want to put her or the team in danger, so he kept away.
Of course, they talked when he got to his apartment.
Right now, he was at the bar working to get more information when his phone rang. He saw that it was Dante. "I've got to take this," Rome said, not letting them answer, knowing that if Dante was calling something wrong, Rome would answer the phone. "What's wrong?" Rome asked with a worried tone, "Hailey is missing," Dante said, making Rome freeze for a few seconds. "I'll be there soon," Rome said. "Okay," Dante said, and they hung up.
1 hour later
Rome got to the district, rushed in, and saw Trudy waiting for him. Rome mumbled a hello before rushing upstairs to see the group, minus Hank, who was in his office waiting for Rome to arrive. "We've got anything?" Rome asked as the group turned around and looked at him as Hank walked out of his office. "No," Kim said, sadly shaking her head. Rome closed his eyes and sighed before opening his eyes and looking at Hank. "What happened?" Rome asked. "She went to meet Lee Byers when they were taken," Kevin said, making Rome look at him. "Lee Byers?" Rome asked, and Kevin nodded his head. "We have his girlfriend in interrogation," Dante said. Hank walked to Rome. "Let's go," Hank said, walking toward the interrogation room.
Rome and Hank walk into the room. Rome sets a picture down. "That's your boyfriend right there," he says, sliding the picture towards her. "In case you're wondering why you haven't seen or heard from him,He was abducted last night," Hank said, causing Jessica to look up at Hank.
"Did you know that?" Rome asked, leaning against the wall. "No, I did not know that." Jessica said, slightly shaking her head ."No?" Rome asked. "Then why won't you talk to my “officers?Hmm?" Hank asked, sitting in the chair. “You won't give them access.to your phone, your tech.You won't even answer a basic question.Why not?" Hank asked."Because I don't want to be involved." Jessica said, "You already are," Rome said.
"Involved in what?Do you know why he was taken?" Hank asked "No," Jessica said."Do you know who took him?" Hank asked "No," Jessica said, causing the room to be silent for a second."You're lying to us." Rome said, walking to the table, pulling the chair out, and sitting down."I'm telling the truth," Jessica said. "Then answer my questions." Hank started "What is Lee into?Why would he be followed?beaten, and abducted?" Hank asked Jessica, but she didn't answer.
“OK, let me explain something to you.Lee wasn't killed.He was taken.You know what that means?That means they want something from him. "Our guess?" Rome said. "They are going to hurt him until they get it." Hank started "Now, what is Lee involved in? You want him to be hurt?" Hank asked “I'm not trying to hurt him. I just don't know anything.Look, he's an addict. I got him clean, but this would not be the first time. Then he relapsed,and did something stupid. But that's not on me. I have no idea who would have taken him." Jessica said, causing Rome to glare at her .
~~~
Lee looked at Hailey tiredly. "You know, Rome always talked about you." Lee started, causing Hailey to stop what she was doing. "Yeah, I would ask how the wife was doing, and he'd just have the biggest smile on his face." Lee said with a small chuckle, causing Hailey to smile a little.
Lee stopped talking. "Hey. you still with me?" Hailey asked as she looked over, seeing Lee's eyes closed, "You've got to keep your eyes open." Hailey added that she was trying to break the other support bar but stopped when she heard the guys coming back, making her turn her head to the door.
"That can't have been an hour," Hailey said, moving to sit by Lee. "OK. We're going to do this nice and clean. OK? You got it. You know what to say?" Hailey asked, "Yeah." Lee said as the two men opened the door and walked in.
"Hour's up. Where's my money?" Mark asked, "He's going to take you to it." Hailey said, slightly nodding towards Lee, "I hid it." Lee said, "OK. Where?" Mark asked, "He's going to take you to it." Hailey said, "That's not what I'm asking." Mark said, getting irritated now, "Where is my money?" Mark asked again. "I hid it in a safe place, downtown. I'll take you to it." Lee said it tiredly.
Mark looked at Elijah, causing Elijah to look at him. Mark pointed the ax at Hailey and said, "Grab her." Mark said Elijah walked toward Hailey and said, "No, no, no! He's gonna take you." Hailey shouted as Elijah came closer, "No, no! No, no, no, no, no, no!" Lee shouted, "He's going to take you to it!" Hailey yelled
"No, no, no! She doesn't know where the money is." Lee shouted as Elijah lay hailey on the ground, "No, no, no! Please! We're going to get you the money. We're gonna take you to it." Hailey yelled terrified, "Don't hurt her!" Lee yelled again. "She doesn't know where the money is!" Lee shouted, causing Hailey to look at him for a second before looking back at Elijah. "Please! Please! Look at me!" Lee yelled, trying to get their attention.
Mark walks over to Hailey, looking down at her. "So do you want to keep your right hand or your left?" Mark asked, "Please! Please! Don't hurt her! Look at me! It's my fault! It's my fault!" Lee shouted, "I have friends who have money. We'll get you the money." Hailey said loudly, "Do you want to hear her beg, Lee?" Mark asked slightly, looking at Lee, "I can't help. Please! Please!" Lee begged, "Chop it." Elijah said, "Let's go with the right." Mark said, raising his ax.
"No, no, no, no!" Hailey yelled as she saw the ax come down, but I was stopped when Lee got up and shoved Mark away from Hailey, causing Elijah to tackle him into the wall. Mark pins Hailey to the ground as a gunshot goes off, causing Hailey to look over. Lee slowly slides down the wall with wide eyes.
"What the hell? What were you thinking?" Mark asked as Hailey crawled over to Lee, putting pressure on Lee's wound. "He was going to shoot me!" Elijah yelled at Mark.
"You idiot!" Mark yelled, hitting Elijah's arm. Elijah hit Mark back. "He fell on me! He was going to shoot!" Elijah yelled. "He had one hand!" Mark yelled out as he left the bathroom. Hailey gazes into Lee's eyes and says, "It's OK. It's OK." Hailey said "I'm sorry." Lee said, meeting Hailey's eyes, "It's OK." Hailey reassured, "She spent it." Lee said, "What?" Hailey asked, "It's all gone. The money's all gone." lee said His head falls down as he stops breathing. Hailey stares at him.
How are we going to get our money back now, huh?" Mark asked, looking at Elijah, "You idiot!" Mark said, snatching Elijah's gun from him, "What did you want me to do?" Elijah asked Mark to turn to Hailey. "Get up!" Mark said loudly, "He's dead." Hailey said, taking her hand from his wound, "Yeah, I can see that. Get up," Mark said as Hayley slowly got up.
"I know where your money is." Hailey said, looking at Mark, "No, you don't." Mark said, "He told me. We were trying to both stay alive, so we were going to take you to it." Hailey said, "You're lying to me." Mark said, "I'm not." Hailey said, "Tell me where it is then, or..." Mark paused and looked down at the gun. "I'll shoot you right here, right now." Mark said, "No. You'll shoot me as soon as I tell you." Hailey said, looking at both the guys, "He stole it for his girl. I know where she lives. I'll take you, and you can let me go." Hailey said Mark walks closer to Hayley, towering over her. "How about I just beatt it out of you?" Mark said, "That's worked well so far." Hailey said, looking at Mark with a deadpan look.
~~~
Rome sits on the bench in the locker room, looking at a photo of him and Hailey. Rome blames himself for Hailey getting kidnapped. Maybe if he was still working here, it would have been him, and he was okay with that. He wished it was him instead of Hailey. He was taken out of his thoughts by a soft knock on the locker, causing him to turn around to see Kevin. "Hey man," Kevin said, giving him a nod. "Hey," Rome said softly "you okay?" Kevin asked, although he already knew the answer. "No, but I will be," Rome said as his phone rang, making him look at the contacts, then turning his phone off and putting his phone into his pocket. Rome looked at Kevin.
"It's my handler trying to reach me, but I'm not going to answer until I know Hailey is safe," Rome said. "It's not your fault," Kevin said, leaning against the wall. Rome scoffed at that, not believing him. "That should have been me, not her; Lee is mine, and Jay CI," Rome said, standing up angrily. "If I didn't have to go undercover, I would still be here working in this unit, and Hailey would've been here and okay." Rome yelled, and Kevin knows he is not yelling at him; he is angry and worried, as everyone was. "It's not your fault," Kevin said softly, causing Rome to look at Kevin, but before he could say anything, Dante walked in with Hank behind him. "We've got something One of them popped at a traffic cam two blocks from an abandoned motel. He used to work there.” dante say as all four of them walk down the hallway
“The place is empty?” Hank asked “Set for demo in two weeks. She's gotta be there.” dante said as they walked into the bullpen Kim handed Rome his jacket and they set off.
~~~
The team gets to the motel, all getting out of their cars and jogging towards the motel. Rome, Hank, and Dante stopped at door number six while Kevin ran to another door. "Go!" Hank said into his radio. "Copy," Kim said, causing Adam to kick the door. "Chicago PD!" Hank yelled as he kicked the door open. All three of them stormed in to see no one until they reached the bathroom.
"Body!" Hank yelled, causing Rome to rush in, but let out a relief breath when he saw it was not Hailey Dante rush in. "It's Lee." Dante said when he saw who it was. Hank crouches down, examining everything. "Where the hell is she?" Dante whispered. Rome looked at the body; some caught his eye in the blood. "Home" was written in it. "Home!" Rome said, rushing out of the motel room. "She's taking them home," Hank said, standing up and leaving the bathroom with Dante behind him. "Get a BOLO out of Mark's other vehicle. Let's go!" Hank spoke into his radio as he left the motel room.
~~~’
Rome and Hank were sitting in Hank's car in front of the apartment building. "All right, everybody stay low. We got anything?" Hank asked into his radio "The back is clear," Kevin said, looking around. "All clear on the east end." Adam said "All right, just stay back. Stay hidden We’re going in." Hank reported to the team as he and Rome stepped out of the car, looking around, pulling down their jackets, hiding their guns and badges, and walking over the railing towards the apartment.
~~~
Hailey in a truck has her hand tied up behind her back and tape over her mouth she bends her knees toward her face getting her hand from behind her back to infront of her she takes the tape from her mouth and brings her hand up the metal bar inside of the trunk rubbing the zip ties on it after a few second the snapped apart. Hailey searches the trunk for a way out
~~~
Rome and Hank walk out of the apartment building. "Does anybody have eyes?" Hank asked into the radio, asking the team. "Still nothing. All clear." Adam responded, shaking his head. "Come on, Hailey, where are you?" Rome whispered to himself. Hank looked at Rome, "They should have been here by now." Hank said, as his other radio went off, "5021, you got your ears on?" the dispatcher asked.
Go for 5021," Hank said as Rome looked up. "Be advised of your BOLO hit. " The camera spotted the vehicle westbound on Fullerton at Ashland two minutes ago." dispatched said, "Copy you." Hank said, "That's only six blocks." Rome said he was picking up his speed. "That's only six blocks out, but they're heading the other direction. Let's go!" Hank said to the radio that his team was rushing to catch up with Rome.
~~~
Hailey feels around the trunk. She presses on a carpet panel. She rips away the edge to see inside the car. Hailey pauses, looking around, before looking down at her sweatpants. She pulls the drawstring from them and wraps it around her knuckles. She pushes the trunk access door down, crawling into the backseat.
There's an entrance to a park about five miles up." Eli said, "It's secluded." Mark said as Hailey fully got out from the trunk, wrapping the string around Mark's throat and choking him, causing Mark to let go of the wheel to the string. They drive off the road into a patch of dirt, barely missing a tree. Eli tries to reach Hailey, causing her to kick him. Mark still has his foot on the gas, making the car go faster. "No! No! No! No! No!" Eli yelled, "See the concrete wall, hailey ducks!" as they hit it.
Eli lays halfway out of the car hood covered in blood as Marl passes out laying on the steering wheel. Hailey stirs awake in the back seat; she crawls half of her body from the trunk, sitting up half way, groaning as she looks at the men unconscious. She reaches for the car handle. She struggles a few times before she finally gets it open. She crawls out of the car on her hands and elbows. She groans as she full-on reaches the ground and starts to crawl but is stopped when Mark pulls her back to the car, flipping her over. He gets on top of her, wrapping her hands around her throat. Haley fights, trying to get him off of her. She turns her head to the right and sees a broken piece of Mark's car. She grabs it and stabs it into Mark's throat, blood splattering on her face as he falls off of her. Hailey coughs as she finally breathes. A cop car pulled up. "Chicago PD! Ma'am, are you OK?" A female police officer yelled, "I'm police!" Haley yelled, still lying on the floor, looking up at the sky.
The team gets there to see Hayley on the floor. Rome jumps out of the car before Hank can stop it. "Hailey!" Rome yelled. Rome reaches Hailey, who crouches down gently, grabbing her hand and saying, "Hailey, can you hear me?" "Rome," Hailey said, closing her eyes.
~~~
Hailey was sitting at the edge of the hospital bed as Rome came in with clean clothes for her to change. "Hey," he said, which made Hailey break out of her thoughts and look at him with a small smile. "Are you sure you want to leave?" Rome asked, handing Hayley her clothes. "Definitely," Hailey said as she stood up, grabbing her pants and pulling them up over her gown. "I'm sorry, Hailey," Rome said, causing Hailey to stop grabbing her shirt. She looked at Rome, confused. "For what?" Hailey asked, confused, as Rome walked closer. "For not being here, I wanted to be here. I really did, but I couldn't. I should have been. This wouldn't have happened if I were just here," Rome said. "It's not your fault," Hailey said, pulling Rome into a hug. Rome hugged her back, kissing her shoulder, and they just stood there.
~~~
Rome took Hayley back to the district and said, "I'll be up in a few; I've got to call my handler." Rome said, leaning against his car. Hailey nodded and walked away. Hank walks into the bullpen to see Hailey sitting at her desk. What are you doing? I thought you were staying at the hospital tonight." Hank asked, "Uh, I had Rome bring me back here." Hailey said, "They didn't want to keep you." Hank asked, "They didn't need to. I'm fine. The team was crowding the hospital, and Rome needed to talk to you, so I just came." Haley said, causing Hank to nod, "Where is he?" Hank asked, looking around, "Outside, talking to the handler, but anything on Jessica?" Hailey asked, causing Hank to shake his head.
"Does the doctor say you're allowed to drink?" Hank asked, putting his finger up and showing a little bit. Hailey smiled, causing Hank to smirk and chuckle as he walked to his office.
Hailey and Hank sit and talk. Hailey rests her head on her hand. "The rest of the evidence we got off of Jessica's WhatsApp. She had multiple accounts. And Lee was hooked on one of them. But that's where they planned it. As far as I can tell, the robbery was her idea. She definitely pushed him to steal the cash. Hank explained, causing Hailee to scoff and shake her head. "Is she admitting to it?" Hayley asked.
hank scoffed "No, she lawyered up." Hank said, "But... I mean, we got her." Hank said, nodding his head. "Lee did it for her." Hailey said "Mm." Hank hummed "He wouldn't give her up, not even to me." Haley said, leaning against her seat, as Rome came upstairs with a sigh, rubbing his face. Hank looked over to see Rome. "Hey, want some?" Hank asked, raising his glass up. "Yes, please." As he reaches them, he leans against Adam's desk. Hank poured some for Rome, handing it to him. "He's mad?" Hailey asked, "Oh, he's pissed." Rome said, taking a sip, "When do you go back?" Hank asked, "I don't," Rome said as he drank the rest in one gulp. "What do you mean?" Hailey asked as Rome put the glass down. "They're coming here to Chicago," Rome said, looking at Hailey and then at Hank.
Headcanons
Tumblr media
Pairing: Hailey Upton x Single Father! Former FBI profiler! OC! Kristoff "Kris" Aller
Summary: here
Author's note: these are just some ideas I gathered until I can't come up with the first chapter. I hope you like it
First Stake-out
“You know, you can ask me anything” He seemed comfortable in the passenger’s seat, his voice was serene and low. The night was perfectly still, his slow-moving chest and words being the only proof of life in the whole block. Unlike her, he felt easy, and his breathing was silent and light. His gaze was on the streets, focused but unpreoccupied. Hailey, on the other hand, froze for a second, and her breathing stopped when he suddenly spoke. “It’s easier than following me around, you know.”
She quickly turned to him, and their eyes finally met. Her widened look found his cool expression.
“Why did you do it?”
"I'm uncomfortable with this partnership" Hailey admitted with a sharp voice
"This isn't a partnership." He replied almost immediately. "I'm here for a case. Only one. Then you don't get to see me again."
Hailey sustained their shared gaze — she analyzed his features as he grew unsletted before her light blue eyes.
"I don't think you mean that. Any of it." She stated. " It's useless to ask you anything if you're going to answer with lies."
Kris snorted. "Are you serious?"
"Everything about you seems fake." She argued back "So, yes, I'm serious."
"Hmm." His eyes were burnings hers; his annoyance was clear "Why is that?"
"You have a juvenile record, but almost none reports from the police academy. Several promotions, only compliments, even Platt likes you...On paper, you're a perfect cop, but—"
"I turned it all down." His semblance softened; he shook his head slowly as if her suspicions were perfectly reasonable. "Do you wish to know why?"
For a second, Hailey saw his eyes water, and she was ready to say 'yes' — but Kris turned his face away in reflex. "Someone's here." He whispered, now analyzing the empty streets.
They were not alone.
Context
• At first, Hailey didn't like the idea of Kris becoming her new partner; Technically, he wasn't even suppose to know about the case. For some reason, however, Voight trusted Kris — yet, it didn't mean Hailey would trust him
• "C.I Bishop" that's what Ruzek called him. No long after, Hailey figured out why he had this title: during his patrol days, Kris assigned more C.Is and got confessions for many cases. Suspects would talk to him as if he was a priest in the confessional. No wonder he was selected for the first team of the Special Investigations Unit. Few years later, FBI itself selected him and took him to N.Y
• Voight and Platt treated him with respect and warmth; it was unusual to see Trudy being chatty and asking about his daughters nearly every time Kris passed by; Voight would do the same thing, and worse: many times, he would take Kris to his office for some sort of secretive conversation. Hailey could only watch them
• Adam was willing to be his partner; Torres was making up theories Kris very often agreed with; Voight trusted him completely — and it was clear that Kris wasn't excited about getting a desk for himself. But the Sargent teamed him up with Hailey, and the man occupied Jay's former table with discomfort. They both had to admit, it was awkward
Partnership
• There was something off about him, Hailey could tell. No one could possibly be so balanced, light headed and calm as Kris . No true profiler or police officer could be so easy going while watching and analyzing the most horrible scenes she has ever seen. He looked like a pshyco, staring at the crime scenes and victims with a totally blank face. Another odd thing: he didn't come up with any theories on the first days, even though this was his only job
• He looked, sounded, and behaved like a lie, a fraud. And this case was too important for him to mess everything up. Hailey felt she had no other option: she started to investigate him
• It didn't take long until she figured out: his wife suspiciously passed away four years ago; he left FBI for unknown reasons; he has the guardianship of two girls: Amber, 6, his daughter, and Tessa, 14, his niece. She could find nothing about Tessa's mother. He had brilliant ratings and few complaints. On the paper, he was one of the best police officers Hailey has ever known — who suddenly gave up everything to work at a rehab center. He was either an angel or a demon running from his past
• Another problem: he had a juvenile reccord, which required autorization to be accesed. He came to Chicago when he was 17, and got in trouble just a few days after arriving. The only thing Hailey could discover: Voight took care of his case
A bit more about the plot:
"I have a clue." He spoke out of the sudden as soon as the shift began. His eyes shone with an unsettling energy. "A theory, more precisely." He walked over to the board. "The animal-based accelerator, the abandoned factories and now companies. It's evolving, growing like a story-line." The whole unit looked at Kris with confusion. "I looked up the first arsons again. All the buildings once were public places, hospitals, secretariats, stations and so on." They asked how the companies buildings would fit into that, and he went on "They don't aim at the people, but at what the place symbols. At 3 a.m, they go to old community centers, lock whoever is in up, and set fires to it." Silence again. "Mission-oriented type of serial killers. I'm just missing their manifest." "Why you keep saying them?" The team asked. "It's a group. Probably white, young men, trying to make a statement for the whole town to see." Adam, Kim and Kevin glanced at each other, all of them confused and surprised. Voight, Torres and Upton stared straight at Kris. "I made up a list of possible next targets. They might act tomorrow." Then, without questioning, Voight said "So let's get ready."
Summary: Everyone is introduced to the uncle and niece duo.
A/N: The ending of this was very rushed because it got really awkward and I didn't want it to get to long. I dont really like this but I am posting this in celebration of me getting my first job!!!!
*****
Jay hummed to himself, idly scrolling through his phone reading some messages while he took the occasional sip of his coffee. He managed to get a full night sleep without getting woken up by someone calling about a crime scene, allowing him to wake up earlier than usual.
Making sure everything was clean and clear, Jay clipped his gun and badge to his belt, slipping on his jacket but before he could open the door on his own accord, his doorbell rung, confusing him as to who would be at his apartment at this time.
With caution, Jay opened to door and was surprised to be met with a frantic looking Will. The doctors hair was a total mess, bags under his eyes, his coat haphazardly put on over his scrubs, his bag just about sitting on his shoulder with his hand clutching a smaller hand.
"I am so sorry but I need a really big favour man." Will said, panting as he just about managed to get all his words out. He looked like hell but his little girl on the other hand, no a single hair of hers was out of place.
Looking back and forth from the father and daughter duo, Jay eventually connected the dots, sighing as he did so. Going through all the possible scenarios in his head as to what the worse would happen if he went forward with this really big favour.
"The daycare at Med isn't open and no one is available to babysit but I had no idea you were working. You know what? Leave it, it's fine, forget I ever asked." Will rambled, only now noticing that Jay was leaving for work.
"Dude, it's fine." Jay shook his head, huffing as though he was hurt at Will trying to leave. "I'll take her to work with me. Everyone will love her and it'll be our first official time hanging out together."
"You sure?" Will replied, apprehensive as he let go of Faith's hand, letting her hold Jay's instead. "I owe you man."
"Nah, it's fine." Jay shook his head again, smiling down at his niece. "We'll have fun at the precinct."
"Alright Faith, be good for Uncle Jay Jay, okay? Make sure he stays out of trouble." Will said, bending down so he was eye level with his daughter. A smile she inherited from him plastered her lips as she bid her goodbyes, pressing a loving kiss on his cheek as she waved him away.
"Bye daddy! I love you too much!" Faith shouted down the hallway, watching Will hurry into the elevator, not wanting to be late. "I love you!"
"I love you too baby!" Will shouted in reply, enthusiastically reciprocating her wave which totally contrasted his completely messed up appearance.
With the elevator doors closing, Jay and Faith were left alone for the first time in both their lives. Looking down at the three year old, the three year old craning her neck to look up at her thirty something uncle, she gave him a toothy grin sending this weird feeling in Jay's gut. All of a sudden, he felt this strong urge to protect this little being with all his livelihood no matter what the universe sent this way. It was weird.
"Okay, let's go to work."
*****
For the entire car ride, without being prompted to, Faith was rambling on about anything that came to mind and Jay was intently listening even though he struggled to make out a few words. Faith spoke about her toys, her amazing father and how excited she was now that she was three since it was her birthday a month before Will suddenly showed up in Chicago.
With her much smaller hand in his, it was weird as to how something so small could exist but it was a miracle it could, the uncle and niece duo walked into the 21st precinct. Jay patiently held her hand at all times as she took one step at a time, the steps were much bigger than the normal ones she was used to but she denied any of his help.
Before Jay could make a clean escape, making a dash towards the metal gates, he was stopped by a very familiar voice causing him to come to a halt, screwing his eyes shut at the impending doom he was about to face.
"Chuckles, what do you have here?" Trudy projected, her hands on her hips when she noticed the tiny human being accompanying one of her detectives.
"Sargent, this is my brothers daughter Faith. Remember Will? The doctor?" Jay replied apprehensively, crossing his fingers he wouldn't get reemed in the middle of the district.
"Sure, anyways, Faith is an amazing name for such an adorable girl." Trudy, shrugged it off, leaning over the desk as she started gushing over the toddler. "I see your uncle missed out on those beautiful red locks, disappointing really."
Faith smiled, giggling despite not understanding what Trudy meant but Jay did and he felt slightly offended. "Okayy and that's enough for one day, we'll be upstairs if you need us sarge."
"It's time to say bye now Faith. Say bye Trudy!"
"Bye Bye!" Faith smiled, waving at the older woman who unbeknownst to her had become the most amazing person in the three year olds eyes.
*****
Whoever came up into intelligence, their footsteps could be heard against the wood flooring, allowing all the detectives to know who was coming up based on the force or speed but this was confusing.
There was definitely more than one person, one being bigger than the other but both going at the same slow pace. No one was able to make out who it was till they made an appearance.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, Jay and Faith made it to the top of the staircase and were in the bullpen. For Jay, it was nothing amazing and he was here everyday, it was basically his second home but for Faith, it was both scary but amazing.
"Woah! Who's incredibly adorable kid did you kidnap?" Adam teased, a smirk on his face, being the first to notice the little girl that no one knew. Getting up from his spinning chair, he set down his coffee and leaned against his desk to get a better look at the duo.
"Jay, you never told us you had a daughter." Erin said accusingly, also smirking as she joined in the teasing. She was slightly shocked but easily hid it along with her confusion and slight irritation.
"Her name is Faith and she's my niece." Jay said with some pride, introducing Faith to all his colleagues. "My brother put me on babysitting today, so I expect all of you to be on your best behaviour."
"Sir yes sir." Adam's smirk didn't falter, walking towards the pair, bending down so he could offer his hand. "It's lovely to meet you Faith, I'm Adam."
"Hi." Faith replied, taking his hand confidently but she didn't move, simply holding it. She smiled at him, flashing a toothy grin in his direction. "Are you a superhero like Jay Jay too?"
"Indeed I am, aren't you smart?" Adam said rhetorically, pushing himself up so everyone else could talk to you. "We're gonna get along great."
"So Adam's already introduced himself." Jay rolled his eyes, pointing at Adam who stood proudly with his hands in his pocket. "This is Antonio, Erin, Al and my boss is Hank. They're all detectives like me."
At his last five words, Faith's whiskey coloured eyes automatically brightened and everyone noticed. She shuffled on her feet, her eyes sparkling in wonder as she looked at them all.
"Hey, you wanna hear a funny story about your uncle cause I've got too many." Antonio spoke up, smiling at the widening smile on the three-year-olds face at the mention of stories. Without a second thought, her hand was out of Jay's grasp and she walked straight to the Latino who picked her up, sitting her on his desk.
Besides Hank and Al, Antonio had the most and probably best experience with children and it definitely showed.
With a soft smile, Jay watched as the senior detective divuldged into a most likely embarrassing story before he walked away, slipping past Erin and moving towards Hank who he had much to explain to.
*****
Thanking all the forces in power today, Jay's brows scrunched in confusion at the purple hair tie that had somehow ended up around his fingers, a cute plastic flower cheaply glued to the front of it.
Throughout the day, Faith had been given a tour of the bullpen and even had the chance of manning the front desk with Trudy when intelligence went out.
It was just after lunch and Faith had woken up from a very good nap, the painless indentations on her face proving such. But, her hair had gotten completely messed up and Jay was now stuck.
Faith giggled at the confusion painting her uncles face, the adorable sounds washing away any of the impatience Jay just had. It was crazy how the toddler made him feel, even though she wasn't his own child.
"You know what, you look great Faith." Jay shrugged, tucking her red curls behind her ears, patting down the uncontrolled frizz all around before picking her out of her carseat and gently setting her on the ground.
For the billionth time today, Faith found herself in awe of the firehouse. She had only ever seen them in her cartoons and despite her excitement, she could feel the nervousness bubbling in her stomach at how big everything was in real life.
As if sensing her miniscule amount of anxiety, Jay scooped the toddler into his arms dramatically and walked up the apron and into the firehouse where he could see squad sitting at their table.
Jay's sudden action shocked her, sending butterflies in her stomach as she shrieked, laughter easily following suit when he wouldn't set her down despite her poor pleas.
The sound of childish laughter interrupted any conversation happening at the squad table, all their heads turning to find the source and to say they were confused was the least they could say.
"Hey man, you good? Whose baby did you kidnap?" Kelly asked, getting up from his chair, giving the detective a typical bro hug while minding the toddler perched on his hip.
"You remember my brother right, he's a doctor at med." Jay said, continuing when the lieutenant nodded. "This is his daughter Faith. Faith, this is one of my friends Kelly, he's a firefighter. Can you say hi?"
"Why do you have a girls name if your a boy?"
Her innocent question shocked them all. Jay's eyes went wide as he stared at his niece, Kelly was a mix between laughter and shellshock while the three squad members immediately began laughing.
"Faith, I what-"
"Oh my gosh! Who is this beauty?" Sylvie said, preening at the sight of the girl as she exited the ambulance. "She looks exactly like the new doctor at Med you know. Oh yeah, did you know that he has the same surname as you Jay, crazy."
"That's my brother Sylvie and this is his daughter Faith." Jay replied with ease, a smile on his face at the rambling paramedic.
Before she could address the fact that he had a brother, she frowned as she cast eyes on Faith's unruly hair.
"Does she have a hair tie?"
"Yeah, it's here, why?"
"Give her here."
And with that, the blonde paramedic disappeared into the firehouse with his niece and her cheap hair tie gone from his wrist.
"Boden's waiting for you inside his office Jay."
"Oh yes! I actually have work to do. Thanks severide."
Beyond the Badges
The ongoing series based on "Hank Voight and the Crackhead Detective." Co-Authored by @creativeimagination206 and @andgry4, with included drawings by @andgry4.
If you haven't read "Hank Voight and the Crackhead Detective," now is the time to jump into this series from the beginning - Follow Hank, Trudy, Al and their misadventures from their academy and beat days. Then, see how their lives intertwine with that of Katelyn Meyers, leading up to the story that started it all, as well as the fate of these characters after that story ends. :)
Find the full AO3 synopsis and link below the cut:
The universe around the story that started it all - "Hank Voight and the Crackhead Detective."
This universe will dive into headcanon of the "three shits" [Trudy Platt, Henry Voight, Alvin Olinsky] and their early (mis)adventures together. Their past intertwines closely with that of the original "crackhead detective," Katelyn Meyers.
Katelyn herself has her own story to tell - how she came to be the "crackhead detective" and why it's so important to her that she sticks with Trudy, Hank and Al, even after the "torture" is over. She is found in all sorts of situations, both before and after the original story. She falls in love with Adam Ruzek and the two create a life together, despite hardships that are thrown their way.
This story is a comprehensive timeline of the lives of these characters, but not only that, it is a story of hope, that your life can be something more than what is written in the stars. Your life isn't defined by the cards you're dealt - it's how you play those cards that matters the most.
On the brink | Part 4
Masterlist
Tumblr media
When a case hits too close to home, is Jay able to keep it together or is he going to lose everything.
Summary: With Lily in the hospital because of Jay, the team has to wrap up the case without the two partners. But the most important question is, are they able to overcome this disaster?
Trigger Warnings: OCC, OC Lilian Grace Harper, asthma, past child abuse, protective Intelligence, Jay fucks up his friendship, canon divergence!
Word Count: 2.4k +
A/N: Here is the next chapter of my first Chicago PD fic, thanks for reading. This is more on the slower side but don't be afraid there's some more drama on the way :) thanks for reading
Will has to keep his rage in check after Ruzek told him what had happened earlier. He can't believe that his brother hurt the only woman who was always by his side, no matter what. She caught him after his bad heartbreak with Erin, she helped him during some bad episode of PTSD, she's his best friend and she could have been so much more, but he fucked up, royally. He has to help his brother to fix the broken pieces of this friendship but when he enters the treatment room and looks at Lily, shaking and absolutely broken in the hospital bed he doesn't know if they will be able to fix this ever.
With cautious steps to not startle the strawberry blonde further he draws closer until he takes a seat beside the bed.
"Hey, Lils. You're okay. Everything is going to be okay." Will grabs her hands and gives her a gentle squeeze.
"Will…" A heartbreaking sob is leaving her mouth. "I couldn't help him. I- I should've have tried harder…"
But the red haired doctor interrupts his friend immediately. "Lily, look at me, please. There's nothing you could've done. We both know Jay. He's a stubborn asshole. HE should be the one apologizing to you. He hurt you physically and I'm probably right when I assume that he also hurt you mentally the last weeks."
"But…" Lily tries to intervene.
Will stands up from his position on the uncomfortable hospital chair to sit down beside the shaking woman on the bed, gathering her smaller frame into his chest.
"No buts, Lily. He's to blame. I know he's your best friend and you would do everything to protect him, but this is on him. But we will fix this, HE will fix this. You're going to be okay."
---
The car ride to the young woman's house was quiet. With her raging headache and aching lungs she tries to concentrate on her breathing. Adam on the other hand occasionally casts worried glances in her direction. He doesn't want to leave her alone after being injured, with a concussion and after her bad asthma attack but he's needed at the precinct, with her and Jay down, cause Voight sent him home.
"Sunshine? Please stop worrying. We got the prick, it's over." Adam reassures her. At least they can close the case, the Jay-problem is the only thing they have to work out and Adam will move heaven and hell to get the two back on track. Out of the corner of his eyes he can see her nodding tiredly.
"I talked to Voight, you're off for the next days. Will is going to check on you later or tomorrow. But please call one of us if you're getting worse. Our doc wasn't too keen to discharge you that early."
A nod is all he gets from the woman beside him. Lily is clearly under shock. Not that she got injured in the line of work, she misses her partner. She needs Jay's closeness and she can't help it, she blames herself for the outcome of this whole dilemma. That's what she is, always protective of the people she is close with, blaming herself for their mistakes. She's the best cop in their unit, Adam thinks and softly strokes her left hand which limply laying in her lap.
"We gonna be okay, sunshine!"
---
The silence in her house is so loud with all the thoughts running in her concussed head. Memories of her childhood, insults of the guys in her old unit, happy moments with Intelligence, cuddly Sundays with Jay, everything is morphing into a painful chaos raging inside her brain.
Curled into a small ball on her couch she's staring into space when a loud knock is bringing her out of her thoughts. She doesn't want to open the door. She doesn't want to see anyone. Why can't they just leave her alone like everyone did in her past? She closes her eyes to shut the world out. But another round of knocks now louder are echoing through her silent living room. Lily pulls the blanket over her face, not ready to face another human being.
---
What has he done? He destroyed everything. The only person on this earth despite his brother who is family for him is hurt because of him. Lily is hurt and he doesn't even know how she is doing. How severe her injuries are. Is she still at the hospital? Is she alone at home or is Adam still with her? Jay fists his light brown hair into his hands when he hears keys jiggling in the lock and his front door slowly being opened. He looks up from his bent forward position on his couch. There are only two people who have a spare key to his apartment and one of the two is probably still in the ER because of him.
"Thought you wouldn't open the door if I would've knocked. Got something to eat for us." Will announces as he enters his brother's living room, taking off his thick coat and boots before making his way over to the brunette detective. Jay doesn't answer the red haired man, he sure as hell knows what happened today. Maybe even treated his partner in the ER.
"Cat got your tongue?" Will says as he lets himself plop down beside his brother.
"What do you want, Will? I got a shitty day and want to be alone" Jay replies annoyed not in the mood for the shit his brother is probably going to give him.
After Will finished his shift at Med he thought about going straight to Lilian but he wanted to talk to his brother first, after all Adam messaged him that the young female detective is safe and sound at home and resting, so he wanted to give her a bit more time to let the whole situation sink in and maybe sleep off her shock.
On the way to Jay's house he had to downscale his rage against his brother. He understands that this case hit too close to home for him. Ruzek told him a bit about the last days and that today was just the sad peak. He needs to talk some sense into him, Jay needs to fix this and that fast.
"Yes I know. That's why I'm here. Lily has a minor concussion, had to glue a laceration on the back of her head. She had a bad asthma attack but Ruzek was able to help her administer her spray at the scene before bringing her to Med."
Will saying his partner's name makes Jay immediately looking up. She has a concussion because of him? She even had an asthma attack because of his previous actions. Despite the huge tension in the last days he noticed that she looked sick. He knows the signs and under normal circumstances he would've forced her to take a break, but he was in his own head for too long. The dead veterans were more important than his partner, his best friend, the woman he loves.
"Is she still at Med?" The brunette man asks with a shaky breath.
"No. She wanted to go home. I was not happy to let her go, her lungs didn't sound as clear as I like them to be, but she insisted. Adam took her home, texted me a while ago that she's resting." Will tells Jay while showing him the message of the other detective.
"Jay, Ruzek told me. Are you fucking out of your mind? Lily is the best that ever happened to you. I thought…" But the redhead can't continue his speech when the man beside him suddenly jumps up and starts to pace in front of the coffee table.
"You think I don't know that?" Jay shouts at the older man who's patiently sitting on the couch. He knows what he did and he hates himself for that and not only for what happened today. His behavior the last days is disgusting him now. When Lily only wanted to help, to cheer him up and be there for him, what did he do? He pushed her away both figuratively and literally.
"Jay, stop it. JAY!" Now it is Will’s turn to shout at his brother. As much as he is pissed at the other man he is also there to calm him down and help him to face his demons. Jay stops pacing and for the first time since Will's unannounced arrival he looks at his brother, a tear slipping down his cheek.
The red haired doctor pulls the detective into a tight hug. "It's gonna be okay, man. You'll fix this. WE are going to fix this. But first of all, let us eat, before the take out gets even colder. Then we gonna talk about a plan how to fix this mess."
"IF I can fix this." Jay breathes in defeat.
"Look at me." Will grabs his brother's shoulders in a tight but not painful grip. "Lily loves you, you know that. She blames herself more than she blames you. She needs you just as much as you need her."
Jay needs some seconds to respond. After he dropped his gaze he now looks his older brother deep into his warm brown eyes. "That's the problem, Will. She is way too good to be true…"
---
"I know that you're at home, Lilian. Open the door or I will kick it down." The raspy voice of her sergeant can't be ignored that easily and Lily knows he will keep his threat and destroy her front door if she won't open it in the next seconds.
On shaky legs and a heavy head she makes her way to her front door. The cool air hitting her when she's greeted by a worried looking Hank Voight. In an attempt to make him some room she takes a step back but a wave of dizziness is hitting her hard. Two strong hands immediately grab her forearms to steady her swaying body.
"You good, kid?" Voight rasps in a soothing voice. After shutting her door with a thud he leads his youngest detective to her couch where she camped out the last hour.
"Lilian, you good?" He repeats his question clearly growing more worried each passing second the woman in front of him is not talking to him.
"Hank… Yeah, sorry. Just a bit dizzy. Got a tiny little concussion. Nothing too serious." She looks up at the older man crouching in front of her still holding her steady with her arms in his gentle grasp.
"I should've killed Halstead…" He mumbles as he makes his way over to the kitchen to fetch a glass of water for Lily.
She didn't know how thirsty she was until the cool liquid hit her tongue.
"Why did they discharge you when you're clearly not fit?" Voight asks rather annoyed as he takes a place beside Lily on the couch.
"I insisted, I wanted to be home, Hank. Will - Dr. Halstead is going to check on me." The strawberry blonde answers in great hope she can convince the older man that she's not as bad injured as he might think.
"Halstead? So now we're trusting that other Halstead guy when his brother is the reason for you being at Med in the first place?" Hank said in an annoyed slightly aggressive tone.
"No, no, no. It's my fault…" But her attempt to defend her partner is interrupted by a violent coughing fit. The urge to cough takes her by surprise causing her to bend over slightly in her seated place on the couch. She can feel her sergeant's worried eyes glaring into her hunched over form.
"Easy, kiddo. Do you need your spray?" The Intelligence Sergeant asks ready to jump up into action.
Lily shakes her head no and tries to calm down her painfully fast breaths. When she's calm enough to form a coherent sentence the young woman looks up at her boss beside her in an attempt to get the elephant out of the room. "How's Jay? You need my statement, don't you?"
Of course his first reason to drive to the house of his female detective was to check on her and see for himself that she's doing okay after being discharged. But he also needs her statement of the incident. He needs to know how he should handle the whole situation. He could suspend Halstead for his stunt, have his badge, let him go on patrol for the next weeks. But he wants to talk to Harper first.
"It - it was an accident. I slipped, that’s what will stand in the report." Lily looks up from her trembling hands in her lap. "I don't want Jay to get into trouble. I guess you already had his ass, back at the station."
"Lilian, he crossed a boarder. In my unit, we look out for each other. He didn't have your back. He hurt you…" The older man knew beforehand how Lily wants to handle this. Her protectiveness over people she's close with is nearly indestructible.
"Yes, he hurt me. But he's my partner, my friend. The closest thing I have, had to a family. Even if this is not going to work out anymore, I don't want to destroy his career. Please Hank." Her eyes are filled with unshed tears, the whole situation slowly sinking in. Will they fix their work and private relationship? A long time ago she vowed to herself that she will never be a victim of abuse again. But it was just the difficult case they had, Jay would never hurt her.
She feels Voight's hands on her shoulder squeezing slightly giving a bit comfort in that confusing situation. Her head starts to pound painfully and her glazed over eyes are the last straw for the sergeant to know that he needs to leave his young detective.
"Rest, kiddo. We can talk in the next days. Call if you need anything."
When she's finally alone again the adrenaline wore off, her whole body starts to ache and the cold is back in her bones. Too weak to make her way to her bedroom she lays down on her couch, snuggling into the soft cushions and into the thick blanket her partner gave her for her birthday last year.
The Saregeant's Daughter - Chapter 14 Madeline
Tumblr media
"Congratulations on the divorce"
-
Tonight, me Maria Noah, and Javier were going out for drinks to celebrate Javier's divorce from his ex-wife Cassie. She always had it out for me and Maria especially me, I never knew why Javier tried to ask her many times but she just ignored the questions.
After Javier left her two months ago he's been much happier, and we couldn't be more happier for him and his son Ricky.
Work was an easy slow day we didn't have any rush in the emergency today which is great, it felt nice to be able to breathe and have our actual 30-minute break.
Walking out of the hospital with Will behind me as I held the flowers in my hands, "You joining us at Molly tonight?" He asked.
I shook my head, "No, I'm going out for drinks with some friends but have fun at Molly's and take a shot or beer for me" I said sending him a smile.
"All right, get home safe please," he said ruffling my hair.
We both let out a laugh before saying our goodbyes.
-
I stood in front of my closet looking at all my clothing that was hung up from my dresses to jeans to skirts to my shirts.
I was unsure of what to wear tonight in this Chicago winter, I tried on many dresses but couldn't seem to find the right one for the weather or it didn't look hot.
I ended up choosing a black dress with some black lace leggings to help a bit with the cold, for makeup I did a warm brown eyeshadow with some eyeliner and a nude lip. I grabbed my chunky thigh-high boots and just straight my hair.
I grabbed my back and threw everything I needed in their before grabbing my long black fancy coat that stopped mid ankle then rushed out of my apartment to the bar we would meet up at.
-
"So Javier how does it feel to be a single father now?" Noah asked him as he drank his beer.
Javier placed his beer down on the table, "honestly great, I don't have to worry about dealing with mad women anymore just my son" he said chucking.
"Okay, let's make a toast!" Maria said grabbing her beer.
We all grabbed our beers and clinked our beers together, "Congratulations on the divorce" I said chugging my beer.
He let out a small chuckle and shook his head in laughter.
"Amen to that sister," Maria said giggling.
"Are you ready to get back into the dating world yet?" I asked him as I asked for another beer.
"Honestly, not really I wanna enjoy my son by myself a bit longer maybe when he starts first grade I will get back into the dating world," he said looking around the bar.
"Hey man you got two years which will go by quickly before you know it," Noah said pulling out a cigarette.
"You?" Javier said turning to face me," You getting back into the dating world yet"
I let out a giggle, "I'm not sure, I have a date with this hot detective tomorrow night" I said shrugging my shoulders.
"You mean fucking tomorrow night," Maria said smirking at me and she drinks her beer.
"Who said he is hitting second base tomorrow, his boss is my uncle, so imagine if he finds out I'm seeing with one of his detectives," I said rolling my eyes.
"As long as he doesn't find out there shouldn't be a problem," Javier said.
"Yeah, but you guys know that I like to post my relationship or always mention them," I said laughing.
"I know we do, but this one has to be kept down low till you guys take the next step in dating and tell him"
We all talked a bit longer and had more drinks before we all called it a night since we had work tomorrow.
-
Standing outside my apartment door with a drunk Javier next to me.
"Ya! Javier why did you have so much to drink if you knew you had work tomorrow" I said digging through my purse and looking for my keys.
"Madeline let it go! I just got out of a long-time relationship. I found my wife cheating on me with her boss" he said crying out in pain as he kneeled.
My heart broke in half for him as he cried, Javier didn't deserve that he was the biggest sweetheart and always put others before himself. He spoiled the fuck out of his wife and son and he gets this in return.
"Oh babe, I know you didn't deserve that nobody should go through that pain," I said kneeling next to him and rubbing his back.
"Six years down the drain! She threw out our family for her fucking boss! What did he have that I didn't" he yelled out.
"Javier calm down, why don't we talk about this inside since it's already late hmm," I said helping him up.
I finally managed to find my keys unlocked the door brought him inside, and helped him lay on the couch.
I grabbed some extra blankets and pillows from the closet. I fixed the couch for him removed his coat and placed it on the empty side of the couch.
I hung up my coat and threw my hair up into a bun, I stood in my kitchen drinking some water and getting ready for bed.
-
"Morning sunshine," I said looking at Javier who stood next to me as I sat at the kitchen island eating pancakes for breakfast.
"That smells so good," he said leaning down to smell my food.
I hit him in the head, "Get your pancakes!" I shouted at him.
"Fucking asshole" He mumbled.
"I heard that!"
"Good, you were meant to!"
Whatever It Takes¹
Hailey Upton x Upton! Brother Oc
Summary: With JJ uncle being in trouble with a gang. His uncle Tom asked for help with getting the money. With JJ working for the gang giving Tom more time to get the money. What he didn't know was Hailey and her unit were looking into the gang and her uncle.
JJ walked into his uncle Tom's house and asked, "Uncle T, are you here?" JJ called out after a few seconds, "Out back," and Tom called, leading JJ to walk outside to the backyard. When he got there, Uncle T was cutting up some wood. "Want a beer?" Tom asked, walking to the cooler. "Uh, yeah, sure," JJ said, taking the beer from Tom. JJ looked up at Tom to see that he had a black eye. "What the hell happened?" JJ asked, setting the beer down on the table. "I got into some trouble; nothing to worry about," Tom said with a shrug. JJ is rolling his eyes. "With who this time?" JJ asked, crossing his arms. "Mason Davis," Tom said, causing JJ to throw his hands in the air. "Mason Davis out of everyone," JJ said, taking his hands and rubbing his face.
Mason Davis was a low-life drug dealer and probably did a lot of other things. "I needed to score," Tom said, which made JJ scowl. "You were clean," JJ said, getting angry now. "How much?" JJ asked, looking at Tom. "5k," Tom said, "damn it, uncle T, how many times have you visited him?" "A few times, but I didn't have enough, so we made a deal, but I'm late on it," Tom said. "I need your help," Tom said, making JJ think about it before nodding. "Yeah, yeah, whatever it takes," JJ said, causing Tom to smile.
3 months later
Hank walked up the stairs to see everyone but Kevin. Hank walks next to the board. "Alright, are we getting anywhere on Mason Davis?" Hank asked, pointing to the picture of Mason Davis, which was next to five people which he had killed. The team knew that Mason had killed them. They all had the same brand tattoo on them. Everyone shakes their heads as Jay's phone rings. He gets up and walks out of the bullpen. Hank looks at Adam, who has been undercover with Mason and his gang for a week. "You got anything?" Hank asked. Adam shook his head. "No, he seems pretty close to the kid and has him under his wing," Adam said, leaning back in his chair. "You've got a name?" Hank asked before Adam could say anything. Jay walked back in and said, "Another one died." Jay said with a sigh, sitting on Hailey's desk. Hank nodded with a sigh, looking at Adam to see if he could answer his question.
"He goes by JJ and can't be older than 17." Adam said, "Any records or social media?" Kim asked, "He has no record or social media." Adam said, looking at Kim. "First name, last name?" Jay asked, "I heard someone call him Justin." Adam said, and Hailey turned to look at Adam. "If we find out who that kid is, we can flip him," Jay said as Kevin walked in. "I've got a location; one of my CIs saw the logo," Kevin said as he gave a sticky note to Hank. "Alright, let's go," Hank said, making everyone grab the jackets.
Hailey grabbed her phone, going to her photos. "Adam, wait," Hailey called out, making Adam stop and turn to her. "Is this what Justin looks like?" Hailey asked, showing a picture of her and JJ; they were both smiling in the picture. Adam looked at the picture for a second, noting that Justin looked a little younger, but nodded his head, making Hailey sigh. "You know him?" Adam asked as Hailey put her phone in her pocket. "He's my little brother," Hailey said, walking away, leaving Adam behind, who had an unreadable look.
15 minutes later
The unit arrived at the house beside Adam, and Hailey and Jay went to the back while the others went to the front door. "Chicago PD?" Adam shouted, breaking the door down and making everyone run. A hooded figure ran toward the back. "You've got one heading out," Kim radioed to Hailey and Jay. The hooded figure got outside and ran past Jay and Hailey. They both ran after the figure. "Police, stop running!" Hailey yelled. The figure hopped over the fence to get tackled by Kevin. "Get up," Kevin said, lifting the figure up and taking his hood off, showing JJ. Hayley saw JJ, "Damn it, JJ," Hailey said, making JJ look at her as well as Jay and Kevin. Haley let out a sigh, not wanting to believe his brother could be in a situation like this.
40 minutes later
Hailey was in the viewing room with Hank and Jay. "So he's your brother?" Hank asked, causing Hayley to nod. "Yeah," Hayley said as all three left the viewing room. "He's a good kid, Sarge," Hayley said as they reached the bullpen, where the others were. "What do we know about the kid?" Hank asked, "We got his school transcript; he was a straight A student until two months ago." Kim said, handing one file to Hailey and another to Hank. "Yeah, he started failing his class and quit the football team. We talked to the teachers, and they said he hasn't been showing up," Kevin said. Hailey rubbed her eyes and sighed. Hank nodded. "Okay, Jay Hailey, go talk to him," Hank said, causing both of them to nod.
JJ was sitting on the bench with his face in his hand. 'Don't say anything, or your uncle is dead,' Mason said to him before he ran. JJ heard the door open, not looking up, not wanting to see his sister's face with disappointment written on it. "JJ," Hailey said softly. JJ still didn't look "I can't, Hailey," JJ said, his voice cracking, looking up at Hailey, who was giving him a sad look. When JJ saw Jay, he tensed up, which they both noticed when he stood up. Jay sighed, putting the picture down on the table. "We have six dead," Jay said, which made JJ roll his eyes. Before he could say anything, Platt walked in with Hailey and JJ behind him. "Let's go, Justin," Tom said, looking at JJ before he turned his eyes to Hailey, not saying anything. Tom grabbed JJ's arm, taking both of them out of the room and out of the station. Hailey looked at Jay before following.
"Did you say anything?" Tom asked as they stopped in front of his truck, "No, I didn't." JJ said, "Don't lie." Tom said, "I'm not." JJ said, not believing him, and Tom pushed him hard into the car. "No, I didn't." JJ said, "Don't lie." Tom said, "I'm not." JJ said, not believing him, and Tom pushed him hard into the car. JJ looked at Tom with fear in his eyes as Haley rushed over, pushing her uncle away from JJ. "What the hell did you bring him into?" Hailey asked angrily, "This is none of your business." Tom said, getting in Hailey's face and clenching his jaw. JJ watched in fear, not wanting his sister to get hurt. "Uncle T, let's just go," JJ said, his voice sounding a bit scared. Tom, not taking his eyes off Tom, nodded and walked away, opening his door and getting in. Hailey looked forward for a few seconds before turning around to look at JJ. "I'm sorry," JJ whispered, turning around and getting into the car. Hailey got out of the way and watched them drive away. After a few minutes, Hailey turns around and heads back inside to join the others.
Pairing: Hailey Upton x Single Father! Former FBI profiler! OC! Kristoff "Kris" Aller
Summary:
Nine corpses, nine burnt buildings, nine victims --- no connections.
The Intelligence unit of District 21st had been unable to find anything. All the clues were dead ends, all the people murdered were different - there was no pattern, no connection.
The only thing in common in all the cases: the modus operandi.
More murders were happening as the unit remained stagnant -- the cases were increasing, and they weren't getting any closer to having even one suspect.
Voight had no choice: he called the most efficient criminal profiler that he knew - who had also left the Bureau after a terrible event.
Kris Aller didn't want to go back, he didn't want to look a monster in the eye ever again, not after what had happened to his daughters.
But the sergeant needed him. This case - all the murders - were linked to the tragedy of his life. A tragedy that Hank couldn't avoid.
A tragedy that only Hailey Upton would understand --- and uncover.
Chapter One: Benjamin Cooper
— God, I hate this song — the teenager complained in a grunt. Even though she was sitting in the passenger seat, she could hear the younger girl singing from the back. — Can you tell her to shut up?
— No way. — The man driving replied quickly. — Amber's expressing herself, I can't tell her off for that.
— So tell her to express herself with another song! I swear to God if I hear — the girl on the back sang loudly: I was good she was hot — Argh! — The teen grunted. — I gave up. My ears will bleed forever.
— Blackhawks won yesterday, let her cheer. — He looked at the girl by his side, worry present in his semblance. — Is there something—
— Billy's here! — Amber shouted, making both the man and the teenager flinch. He stopped the car.— Papa, can I go? Please, I need to talk to him—
— At least she stopped singing.
— I heard that, Tess! — He stared hardly at the older girl before turning to the other. — Yes, you can, Amber, but behave in class, ok?
— Thank you! — She freed herself from the belt, kissed and hugged her father, and held the door of the car. — Bye, papa. Bye, Tessa. See ya later! — she dropped off and ran into the school. Her shirt of the Chicago Blackhawks got the attention of some girls around but she didn't mind.
They watched the little girl go as they waited inside the car in complete silence.
— Oh, no. — Tess suddenly spoke. — Mother Alert, we gotta go.
A woman appeared on the horizon: it was too late, she had reached the car and was already asking for the teen to lower the window.
— you're a terrible getaway pilot. — she mouthed to the man before rolling down the glass and allowing the woman to come even closer.
— Kris! How good to see you! — the woman screamed.
— Hello, Margaret. — only Tess could tell his smile was fake. — How are you?
— Oh, dear, I'm suffering because of you! — Tess widened and moved away from the window. Being between the two now should be her punishment for complaining. — My boys won't stop asking for your pretzels! My house is a mess.
— I'm sorry to hear that. You haven't tried the recipe yet? — Kris kept his hand on the wheels. He wanted to leave as much as Tess did.
— I have, but I don't have the magic hands you do, dear! Would you like to stop by tomorrow and teach the boys how to make it? I think it's the only way to calm them down.
— Oh, no, I wouldn't like to bother you. — One of Kris' hands fell to the gearbox. — I'll bring some more to their training, don't worry. — the car started to move. — Sorry, I gotta go. See ya!
The woman was left behind in sidewalk as both Kris and Tess started to breathe easily again.
— Was she smelling? — Tess asked.
— Don't be mean. It was just some cologne...I guess.
— It's paradoxal, you know. The mothers love a single dad but are crazy to make you no longer single.
— This is the conversation you want to have right now?
Tess' smile faded away. Kris wouldn't miss a thing, would he?
— I don't want to talk about it.
— Okay.
— It's just silly stuff from school.
— If it's bothering you, then it's not silly — he started, and Tess finished the sentence with him, her voice was filled with impatience and discomfort.
— I know, I know. — she sighed. — Still, I don't feel like talking right now.
— Sure. — Kris kept driving. — Do you want to get some ice cream?
— I have class.
— It's okay, we have time. — He turned the wheel to the right and started to look for an ice cream parlor. They arrived at a commercial street very quickly. — Here it is.
— It can't be open.
— It is! — he parked without any problem. At this time in the morning, no one was driving or passing by a street like that, but, thankfully, the parlors and cafeterias were open — still empty, but open.
— So, — he turned off the car. — ice cream?
— I hate when you do this
Kris smiled.
— you hate many things but you love ice cream, don't you?
— yes.
— So let's go.
Kris made her smile — well, she was smirking but it counted —, and they approached the parlor with joy.
The man was about to crack a joke when a man showed up by the empty street corner.
Kris' steps slowed down, recognizing him immediately. He, however, didn't allow Tess to have the chance to look at the other man.
— Tessa. — He turned her over to him. — I'll be right after you, ok? Here, get the one you want. — Tessa noted something was wrong, but she obeyed and walked over to the parlor, keeping distance from the other man.
As she reached the shop, Kris waited for the man to come closer.
— Sergeant Voight. — Kris spoke with a tense voice. He already knew what this was all about. He knew what he was going to ask. That's why he didn't take any of Voight's calls. — How can I help you?
— You know how. — Voight was holding a file. — I need a profiling, off the books.
— The feds would be happy to help you with this.
— No. — Hank stepped closer, — they can't know. We still don't know the length of this and...
— Maybe one of them can be involved. — Kris grunted under his breath. He looked away and remained in silence for many minutes.
— We've got 9 victims so far. — Hank would say whatever he needed to convince the man. — It's a clear M.O but we cannot predict too much besides that. My team and I—
— Okay. — Kris spoke suddenly. This time, when he looked back at the Sargent, his eyes shone discreetly. — I'm in. — His look jumped to the girl in the parlor, now appreciating her ice cream. — With one condition. My daughters have to be safe , no matter what.
— Nothing will happen to them. — Voight handed him the file. — I already spoke with your boss, he said he'll take care of the center until you're done helping us.
Kris laughed.
— You're a step ahead, as always. — Kris walked away from the Sargent. — See you there.
Voight nodded and left.
And Tess was watching everything when Kris finally came to the parlor.
— You're getting back, aren't you? — Tess sounded suspicious. Her hands were squeezing the bowl of ice cream with strength.
— You don't have to worry about it. — Kris said, helding one of her hands in an attempt to calm her down. Her expression slowly softened. — I made sure you and Amber we'll be safe and... — He showed a mischievous smile. — you have your own high school drama to live now, forget about me.
Tess rolled her eyes at his words.
— I'm not telling you anything.
— Yeah? I doubt it. I think you will come up with five profiles by next week.
— God, you make me sound creepy.
Kris laughed proudly and loudly.
— What can I say? It's our family thing.
X
Arriving at the police station would never be discreet: as soon as Kris left his car, half a dozen officers turned to him. Some smiled, some widened their eyes, but the loudest of all was Ruzek, who cheered and shouted as he came closer.
— Can't believe you're here, man — Adam hugged Kris and tapped his back. — I always thought you'd come back
— Hold on, I'm not back — "yet", Adam whispered, interrupting Kris while they walked to the unit floor — Voight asked for help and that's it. Don't get too excited.
— I'm not, but Kim will be. She's been curious about you since Myk and Amber started playing together.
— But she already knows me… — Kris was confused, he couldn't understand the reason behind Adam's excitement in time
— But she doesn't know ‘Bishop’! — Kris grunted in distress — It's good to have you back, Bishop
Adam walked away laughing as they came upstairs and met with the rest of the unit. Voight, Upton, Torres, Burgess and Atwater stared at Kris immediately.
— Team, that's Aller, former FBI profiler. — Voight introduced him — He’s going to help us with this case, so bring him up to date.
The man nodded respectfully and came closer as Torres stepped in and showed him the board.
— We have 9 corpses, 9 places and 9 crime scenes. All of these men were killed between 9 p.m to 3 a.m, with chains and inner burns.
Inner? Kris frowned at the words and stared attentively at the photos.
— They were cooked. — Kim explained with a choked voice. — Tortured during the whole night. We can’t get why, we don’t have any suspects…We don’t even have images. Only the bodies.
— And we don’t have much more of them, either…They had to be identified by their dental arch.
— It’s cruel. — Kevin said.
— It’s personal. — Kris spoke. — The victims had any enemies in common?
— No one. Nothing, to be honest. — Adam approached the board with the photos of the victims. — Different jobs, different homes, different colors and ages…But the same way of death.
Silence took over the room. Again, confusion and tension paired in the air as the new member of the unit stared at all the data, and all the other members watched him. He was totally still, eyes frozen on one name on the board.
— Benjamin Cooper. — Adam broke the silence with anxiety, pointing at the name that Kris so determinedly looked at. — No criminal record, but he testify years ago in—
— I know him. — Kris cut him off, and his eyes finally moved: his gaze landed on Voight. His expression, even though still as before, focused on the sergeant for too long. — He’s the reason why I’m here.
Voight looked away: the discomfort made him move around the room as Hailey watched them both suspiciously.
— Why do you mean? — Kim inquired.
— I…I worked on the case he testified in. — Aller explained. — Thanks to him…it all went wrong.
— I want you to talk with his family. — Voight demanded. — They know something, but didn’t tell us anything. They’ll talk to you.
Kris crossed his arms over his chest. He didn’t take long to agree with the sergeant.
— Is this a pattern? — He asked before walking away from the board. — The other victims were involved in the case too?
— No. None of them had ever testified. — Torres replied.
— Cooper was a dead loss, the testimony was the only thing that could get him killed. — Kris went on. — He might be our connection.
— You heard him. Investigate the man, make a timeline of the night he was murdered, discover every single contact of his and find a connection. Every little detail can be important. — Voight gave the orders as he followed Kris.
They were about to walk downstairs when a strong voice stopped them.
— If Benjamin was a ‘dead loss’ as you said — Upton spoke up — why waste our time on him? The killer might act again tonight and we have to—
— Do we have any better leads? — Voight’s voice was sharp, his reaction was abrupt and harsh. His voice would grow louder if Kris hadn’t held him. — What? — He screamed at Aller.
— Calm down.
— I am perfectly calm for this case, Kristoff, but I cannot bear to see another dead body because of him .
Kris’ expression went dark. He bended over Voight.
— You’re not thinking straight….— Kris whispered. — Stay here. Remember what we talked about. I’m going to talk with the Coopers.
Voight walked back to the unit floor, and, before going into his office, he ordered again:
— Upton, you go with him.
She opened her mouth to protest, but Hank had already shut the door close.
Hailey picked up her coat and walked away with Kris, in complete silence.
They went downstairs and passed by Platt's balcony with a quiet goodbye. Even though the Sergeant clearly tried to talk with Kris, the man walked across the entrance and ignored all her glances.
Again, Hailey watched his behavior in silence and kept her way to the car.
— I'm sorry about Voight. — Kris said before getting closer to the passenger side. — This case is…. complicated to him.
They got into the car and Hailey asked:
— Yet, he won't tell us anything about it.
— It's a confidential case. — He argued.
— So confidential that you think everyone involved in it's a target. — She started the car.
— You need a connection. That might be it.
— Is this your profile? Or just a guess?
Kris responded with a snort.
— You're better off without knowing much about this case, believe me. — He shrugged in his seat. — Are we going to the Coopers or not?
Hailey grunted and drove away from the police station.
X
The house of the last members of the Cooper family was simple and humble. The garden looked abandoned, the grass was tall and the fence was almost completely broken. The car parked in the open garage was lowered, with empty tires and cracked windows.
They did not look simply poor — they looked like they had given up on life itself.
— I think it’s better if you stay here. — Kris spoke before Hailey could exit the car. Luckily or not, she froze for a second, giving him time to leave and walk over to the house.
After collecting herself, Upton got out of the car and ran after him.
— Excuse me? — She grabbed his arm and made him turn to her. — Who do you think you are?
— Look, don’t make this personal. Just — He cut her off before she could argue back — Just look around. They won’t talk to you.
— But to you they will? You're as arrogant as any shrink who's never been in the streets.
Kris watched her speak in silence: with his hands in his hips, he only waited for the woman to be done.
She stopped talking very quickly — after all, it was useless to say anything to his blank, strained expression — and the man enjoyed the silence of the street before finally replying:
— They will talk to me because they know me. — He stepped back. — Now, if you excuse me…
Ignoring his arguments, Hailey followed Aller close behind. He didn’t utter another word to her, and finally knocked on the house’s door.
— Anna? — Kris called. — It’s Kristoff. Can we talk?
Unlike the reception Upton and Voight received a few days ago, the woman answered him quickly and promptly. Her eyes were widened when she opened the door, but she frowned at Hailey. Anna’s face dropped, and she muttered to Kris a few words.
Kris signed to Hailey and they both followed the woman into the house.
— Can I see Benjamin's room?
— She already did — Anna replied before Upton could — They took all his gadgets and notebooks.
— I know. — Kris smiled gently. — I just want to check one thing up
Anna stared at him for too long — her gaze was heavy, not suspicious, but, somehow, sad. It carried so much guilt that she eventually showed him the room.
— I'm waiting in the kitchen. — she told them before opening the door of Benjamin's bedroom.
Kris stepped in as Anna walked away.
— As she told you, we already searched in here. You won't find anything useful.
— Maybe not. — Kris replied with a whisper, his whole being focused on analyzing the room. The walls were empty, and so was the bed and the dressers. — Looks like a prison cell.
— Or he was just minimalist. — Hailey argued. — Cooper's never been in jail.
— Yes. — Aller came closer to a drawer. — But he also had three records for criminal harassment. He was a stalker. — Kris wandered through the drawer and collected a few flyers. — Here it is.
— What?
— Our connection.
He didn't give Hailey time to question — Aller stormed out the room and came to Anna.
— Thank you for your help, Anna — He held out his hand to her. — We're already leaving.
The woman shook his hand and blinked slowly, as if gathering courage to say something.
— I have to tell you something. — Anna admitted.
Hailey saw Kris' expression drop — he stepped back and prepared to leave right away.
— You'd already told everything you needed. — He tried to be polite, but Hailey purposely stood in his way. He stomped on the detective and was obligated to stop.
— I did thank you. — Anna came closer, but Aller didn't look her in the eye. — But I never apologized for leaving you there. I shouldn't—
— It's okay. — He cut her off. — You don't have to. It's already gone. I don't resent you.
He smiled at her for a brief moment — only enough time to make her feel forgiven and understood.
Then he shook his head and left the house after saying a quiet goodbye.
Hailey stood there without understanding much — where was 'there'? What was Anna talking about? why would she thank him?
Upton followed him keenly — she wasn't going to stay in the dark again.
The way to the police station was silent: the tension stretched the air, making the atmosphere too heavy to even breathe. Kris shifted in his seat, his eyes were either moving to the window or to the driver's side. Hailey, on the other hand, kept her gaze on the streets.
When they parked and got out of the car, Platt was already waiting for them — for him.
The look that the Sargent gave Hailey showed her why the garage was completely empty. Trudy was furious.
— Have you gone mad? — She stomped over to Aller, and the man stepped back immediately. — What are you even—
— I guess your best ability is pissing the sargents off. — Hailey’s smile dropped as soon as Platt's gaze landed on her.
Kris spoke before Trudy could shout.
— This isn't the best place to talk about this. — He made Platt look at him again. — And you don't have to worry about it. — He held the sergeant's shoulders. — No one does. No one knows.
— Voight shouldn't have called you. You shouldn't be involved in any of this—
— Trudy, please— His eyes, shining with exasperation, turned to Upton for a brief second. — Don't—
— You can't help him! — She screamed.
And Hailey was watching and listening to everything. Maybe the whole station was.
— I can. — Kris' voice was still low, stable. Serene, the complete opposite of his face. — I will. Please, you—
— Aren't you thinking about your girls? How can you? He did—what he did was monstrous! — Platt would not stop. She could not stop. — He spanked you.
— I know. — Kris whispered as his arms involved the older woman. She was trembling under his hands.
— He raped you. — Platt sobbed, her tears were falling nonstop. — And you're being used again, you're ruining your life again for what? For him?
— I'm going to be fine, Trudy. I can do it.
— Voight's using you. — She pleaded again: — You can't—
— It's okay. — He hugged her tighter. — It's okay.
They stayed in the garage until the Sargent was able to stop crying. Until she was able to stop trembling.
And Hailey stayed there too.
She now had — at least a few — answers for all her questions about him.
