[11:49AM]
Sitting in the intelligence unit provided an indescribable feeling. Once Dante first made it upstairs, Seraphina remembers questioning how it felt to simply be in that space (knowing how hard he worked for it, although she never would have chosen police work for him. She acknowledged Dante’s dedication to the force) along with having his own desk. When he told her, she’d have to feel it for herself…she never imagined she would be here years later sitting face to face with Hank Voight and side by side with Deputy Chief Reid.
Reid made it his mission to shut Dante out as he, Seraphina, and Dante entered the area. That certainly didn’t sit right with the buzz haired officer and it seemed that the rest of the team members that watched in silence, waited to see how Dante would handle that. He had to keep his cool and there was a glint in Reid’s dark eyes that seemed to bait him.
It wasn’t until his eyes shifted to Seraphina that he made his decision not to fight this. Dante didn’t have doubts that Seraphina couldn’t handle herself on her own in a room with two very calculated men, he just felt like she shouldn’t have to.
Not when he was right here.
Dante dips his head, stepping back as Seraphina and Reid continue to Voight’s office. It was more of a shun as Reid closed the door behind them, along with the curtain on the back of that door but they could all still see between the gaps of blinds from the other window.
Dante doesn’t take a seat, choosing to lean against his desk and cross his arms as he almost glared at the direction of Voight’s office.
“What the hell is happening?” Adam is the first to question it, although they’ve only got bits and pieces from Kevin (thanks to Seraphina’s warning) before Voight confirmed that Reid would be on his way in and that Coty would be with him.
Dante doesn’t answer, gaze still on the office, wishing he could be in there and figure out what Reid’s true angle was here.
“Dante,” Kim moves to stand to his left, “Care to fill us in on what you know since you came in with them? Kev only told us that this most likely has something to do with someone from Coty’s past?”
That gets Dante to move his gaze right to Kevin who’s seated in his chair, eyes already locked on his team member.
“…why would she tell you instead of coming to me? And the fact that you sat on this and didn’t say anything to me about it, is foul.” Dante kept his voice leveled but it was evident that he was iritated about this.
Adam and Kiana both shared a look from across the room before looking back at the two men. Kevin takes a deep inhale, leaning forward in his chair as he pressed his elbows into his kneecaps.
“Respectfully, that doesn’t have anything to do with me,” He starts making Dante tilt his head to the side, furrowing his brows in confusion, “Coty needed to vent at the time and I’m glad I was able to be a listening ear, since she often feels like a burden to you.”
Dante runs a hand over his face, not liking Kevin’s honesty right now, especially when he could have provided that weeks ago when Coty most likely told Atwater this.
Adam chips in, “You could have given us a little something before hand though…I mean it’s feelin’ like this could be big.”
Kevin side eyed the honey brunette who stops fiddling around with a pen but raises his hand in no offense, although Adam did not find his commentary to be wrong, he then decides to blow out a breath at the heated stare before continuing to spin from side to side in his own chair.
“Oh it’s big alright,” Kiana says nudging her head towards the office hearing the voices inside pick up.
Voight tightens his stare at Reid who sits comfortably in the chair to the right with his hands clasped.
“You mean to tell me there’s chemical weapons being brought into my city and you want to use Coty here to help put an end to this.” Voight summarizes, “Not only that, you also want my team involved.”
Reid nods his head, “That about covers it, yeah.”
Voight flicks his eyes back to Coty, who’s sitting with her shoulders back yet her elbows were leaning hard into the arms of the chair to the left. “What’s your connection to the suspects?”
“Reid thinks I still know how Camila, one of the suspects, operates.” Seraphina keeps herself poised, “I’ve been in this city all my life up until recently and I haven’t seen the girl in years.”
Reid cuts in, “You must have some idea…considering you took a field trip to the old pawn shop you all got arrested at when you were kids. It also looks like you retrieved something from there too with your new pal, Sutherland.”
It was as if watching an avalanche occur in Serpahina’s brown eyes as she stared at Reid. Of course he had to be following her and Peter, it wouldn’t be in his nature to just see how things go without having his hands somehow in majority of the steps.
“Who the hell is Sutherland?” Voight quips, hand moving into the air.
Reid answers before Seraphina could give anything away, “Another source of mine. We need all hands on deck for this, Hank. This will be our own Armageddon.”
The expression on Seraphina’s face was enough for Hank to let out a small laugh, sitting back in his chair with a force is rocked back and forth, running a finger over his bottom lip afterwards.
“What exactly did you and this Sutherland person pull from the pawn shop, Coty?” Voight quizzed, although he has a feeling that Reid already knew.
The woman lets out an exhale, “It’s a diamond that Camila and Bayo stashed there, that he’s somehow transforming into not your average bullet. It’s apparently what they’ve been up to in Sierra Leone. I’d have to get into a lab to confirm that but I wouldn’t be surprised…just based on the files I’ve seen.”
Voight continues, “And do we have any idea where they would be lying low or where they would hit?”
“The worker that Sutherland and I spoke with, mentioned City hall but I’m not sure what the motive would be to hit there.”
Reid nods as if this is all pleasing to him, “That’s where your team comes in, find the details and fill out the blanks. Seraphina will deal with the lab and intelligence will put a stop to what’s possibly going to go down.”
Voight is silent at this.
He had no problem getting his hands dirty, what he did have a problem with is Reid making demands and expecting it all to go one way when it most likely wouldn’t.
“How’d you get intel on this?” Voight decides to come right out with it.
Reid blinks, “I’m Deputy Chief. Of course I would have leads.”
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
Reid snickers, leaning forward as he responds, “It doesn’t matter, Hank. Just do what you’re told.”
Seraphina widens her eyes at this yet she had a feeling this wouldn’t be an easy conversation.
“That’s very telling Chief,” Voight huffs, “And I’m getting the sense that you didn’t just get Coty wrapped in this because of her career.”
Here comes the intense eyes on Seraphina and Voight’s eyes tell her that he knows she’s being manipulated into doing this. The difference between Voight seeking Coty’s help previously for a case was she wanted to be involved, this time it was for Reid’s own benefit and Voight was going to find out exactly why.
Reid lifts his shoulders, “It sounds like to me you want to get out of doing what’s being asked of you.”
“Oh, you think so? I’ve never been one to shy away from a hard days of work but I just hope you know what you’re signing up for.” Voight’s gruff tone, holds something to it that actually makes Seraphina’s heart rate spike.
Reid holds Voight’s gaze for a while before letting out a laugh, “We’ve worked together before, we all know how we operate, so let’s keep that in mind.”
“Meaning what?” Seraphina asks, while the two men are silently telling each other something with their eyes.
Reid saw the intelligence unit as an opportunity whereas Voight didn’t trust a snake that hid its rattle.
The wavy haired man slowly turns his gaze to the short haired woman beside him, flashing her a coy smile, “That as a team, we conquer what targets us.”
She frowns, “Talking in metaphors again doesn’t really work as your selling point, I don’t know if you know that or not but this is me reminding you.”
“I’m not trying to sell you anything.”
Voight nods, “Nope. Just make demands.”
Reid glances between the two in the room, “As beautiful as this banter could be, we don’t really have much time to waste. This was courtesy bringing you this case Hank and this is also to show what’s still in you, Coty. So let’s get out there and inform the rest so we can get to work before it’s too late.”
He gets to his feet, not leaving much more room to debate this.
“Courtesy would be, not controlling the narrative. So just come out with it!” Voight pushes his chair back, getting to his feet.
Reid exhales as he stands with his hand on the door, “We’re friends Hank, there’s no underlining secrets here. It’s just a case.”
Seraphina hums at that, showing that she wasn’t really believing this either. Not when Reid tried to throw Dante’s situation in her face and plot to ruin her life if she didn’t help with this case.
“Nothing is ever just a case, you understand?” Voight argues, “Whatever this is, it’s going to come out so it’s best you don’t bullshit me. Not if you’re going to have my team tied to it.”
Reid peers over his shoulder, taking in Voight’s words, “…I’d never steer a friend wrong, Voight. I can clear things up for you but I’d prefer laying it all out on the table in front of your team. This way there’s no confusion on one’s ears.”
Which also felt like another jab to Seraphina as she took in Voight’s facial expression. Reid leaves them with that, stepping out into the main area and claps his hands together to get everyone’s attention. He immediately tells Cook to get the whiteboards out, asks Dante for the files that belonged to Seraphina that were given to her by Peter. Reid wastes no more time placing pictures on the board and handing over a marker for Kim to write down what he verbally knows.
Seraphina also gets to her feet, being stopped at the door by Voight while keeping his ears open on Reid’s raspy commanding tone.
“What’s he got on you, Coty?” Voight doesn’t hold back and that’s something Seraphina can appreciate.
She looks at the graying man who lets go of her arm, “Just what you expect. Dante’s relationship with Perez.”
He gives a stiff nod.
That would mostly be on intelligence than Seraphina but he knows there’s more to it.
“He’s also using my mom’s addiction against me, trying to make it look like I distributed to her this time around based on what happened when I was a teenager. And now this chemical weapon situation. Since I knew Camila, it’s now my job to also take her down.” Seraphina lets it all out, although her throat feels dry telling it to a man who most would call the devil.
Somehow she felt more comfortable with Voight than Reid. Perhaps it had to do with the whole kidnap thing awhile back or maybe it’s because Voight polished his skeletons rather than shield them.
[1:36PM]
“Are you ready to come clean now?” Seraphina utters with her back to the inclosed lab, her eyes focused on a microscope.
A throat clears and it makes her sigh.
She turns to Manny who stands with his hands in his pockets. His dark aurora lights for eyes hold a seriousness in them, no ounce of humor crinkling at the corners just yet. It’s an odd thing to witness but it’s there. From around him behind the glass, Seraphina can see Peter appearing distracted as he points in Manny’s direction while Weaver keeps her eyes mainly on the two inside the lab.
Manny suddenly attempts to make light of this, “About what? I’ve got friends in the right places…that last thing I would want is you and Peter going with your original idea, breaking into your old lab and potentially ruining your chances of working at any other.”
Seraphina peeks at the red numbers on the wall, mentally keeping track of time.
“That’s not what I was really aiming at and I don’t know if me saying thank you would be genuine, since I don’t want to do this, all while I feel like you’re keeping secrets of your own.” Seraphina describes, making the bearded man awkwardly rub at the back of his neck, “Is Reid also one of your friends? Because I’m still confused on how you found out where I was staying?”
Manny could spin this, if he really wanted to, throw Dante in Seraphina’s face, especially since he barged into the hotel room hours ago and the fact that he crossed a line. Yet Manny could read the room and knew that wouldn’t be his best approach. He also wasn’t the type of man to do tit for tat, even if his mind may think it from time to time.
“He’s really a friend of my dad’s…” Manny clarifies, “I don’t necessarily agree with his ways but…I’m here, for you.”
Seraphina scoffs out a laugh, “Can I believe that? How do I know that you’re not working for him? Are you really who you say you are? Did you really come into that bar just because you were in town for work or was that all Reid’s doing?”
He frowns, “No. I would never play with your feelings like that. That was real divine timing.”
“Then what’s this?”
“What do you mean?”
“Why lie about you knowing Charlie Reid?”
Manny blows out a breath, “I didn’t intentionally lie to you about him. I knew once he started coming around more—which normally isn’t always the greatest feeling—I know…so what would I look like saying that my family knows him well after he’s got you wrapped up in this? You would think I’m a red flag too.”
“Well that’s what it’s kinda looking like.” Seraphina’s admits.
Manny lifts his chin and slowly nods his head in offense, “Wow. So you get to be untrustworthy with Dante but the minute you see something you don’t like, I’m the only one in the wrong? That’s not how this works.”
“Please tell me how it does?” Seraphina throws her hands up in the air, “I never said I’m placing all on the blame on you. I came clean about my wrongs and I wish you would have done the same. I’m showing you that suddenly I’m uncomfortable because you know a guy that has underlining motives.”
“How do you know that though?” Manny inquires, “All this could be is you having a part in the case. He’s not asking for much more. We agreed on that.”
Seraphina tilts her head to the side at Manny’s slip up, “You agreed?” She presses, “What else did you agree on when it comes to me? Why does Reid have you hanging around Weaver all this time? Are you a night agent too, Manny?”
Manny immediately shakes his head, “Nah. There’s too much going on in that field for me, I’m quite fulfilled working in Philly’s school district. I’m just a family friend.”
Is he really?
“If I hear the world friend one more time I’m gonna scream.”
Manny shakes his head, “Please don’t do that, you know I got sensitive ears, baby.”
“Don’t call me baby right now.” Seraphina snaps, making the dark haired man raise his hands in surrender.
She gets off the stool and starts pacing, while Manny continues giving her space.
“Tell me what you’re thinking.”
“I don’t know what to think! A lot of this doesn’t make sense and I’m overwhelmed. This is exactly why I left this city because it’s always something. I can’t escape this madness no matter where I go.”
Manny sighs, “I’m sorry I added to that. That’s never what I wanted to give to you. It’s just not what you think.”
Seraphina sets her gaze ablaze on her boyfriend. If she could even still call Manny that! Someone that she felt an instant connection to and slowly built something with. No one could ever say she wasn’t open to giving people a chance—despite her having a shell up—part of her still gave herself away even if it was only in pieces. This was fresh, new and supposed to be secure but right now it all felt like it was slipping through the cracks.
“What does he have on you?” Seraphina suddenly decides to ask, figuring that must be the only explanation for this.
A timer goes off, making Seraphina break eye contact with Manny. She steps away, tapping on the button to cut the beeping noise off. Grabbing her mask, she secures it around her head and face before waving Manny to step out. Carefully she heads over to a small inclosed refrigerator section, waving through the clouds to open up the compartment where the diamond was once placed in solution.
Seraphina’s eyes go wide at her findings and quickly steps out to securely close the cold area shut behind her. Her breathing felt like it was wheezing a little bit despite having the proper attire on but nonetheless she makes her way over to the glass, knocking on it to get the attention of the three on the other side.
They’re immediately on alert, making Peter and Manny move towards the entrance but a shake from Seraphina and Weaver calling out for them to stop their movements, they focus back on what Seraphina is trying to tell them. Quickly she moves to create condensation on the glass and writes with her gloved finger.
files are right. diamonds = lethal.
All eyes go wide at this before Seraphina makes a call motion with her hands, telling them to inform intelligence and whoever else needed to know.
[3:19PM]
Most would agree that this day was dragging. However Reid felt like they were all just getting started, he did the honors of showing the footage Seraphina managed to film for them about how Camila and Bayo were able to transform the blood diamonds into bullets. She unfortunately had to make a trip to the hospital for thorough oxygen treatment, further proving that once the bullets were passed through the air, they can cause respiratory issues to bystanders first before ever hitting its target, followed by other traumas.
The intelligence unit was able to officially meet Catherine Weaver whereas Peter and Manny stayed with Seraphina until she was cleared.
“So we know Camila and Bayo’s main line of work is in Bayo’s origin country: Sierra Leone. They’re smuggling these chemical weapons back to Chicago to target city hall. We have no known locations of where exactly they’re smuggling or how much they’re transporting into the city. What are we missing here?” Voight urges while Reid keeps his hands clasped in front of him, eyes scanning each face.
Reid turns to Dante, “Torres…how well did you know The Cartagenas?”
“I didn’t.” He shrugs resting his tatted arm against his desk, “I knew of them. Didn’t really interact with them before I went to juvi. That was mostly Coty’s crowd while I was away.”
It felt odd talking about Seraphina like this. As if she was some sort of chess piece, when Dante didn’t think she needed to play more into this case than she needed to. Especially since she took the risk being exposed to chemical weapons. Of course she’s been exposed to many harmful chemicals before working in forensics but after cutting ties for awhile, it felt better, safer that she kept out of it.
Weaver speaks up, “I interviewed Camila’s older half-sister Amaia and she’s made it clear that her and Camila don’t see eye to eye. Never have. She always felt like Camila was too clingy so she thought pushing her away would make her grow up and do better.”
Kevin can’t help but to throw out there, “And now her ass is a whole criminal.”
Adam covers up his laugh with a cough but also adds, “Are we positive that she hasn’t had any contact with the nephew despite Amaia’s efforts to keep Camila out of her life?”
Kim says, “Well he’s not that old, maybe five or six? He can’t really talk to his aunt on his own without Amaia knowing right?”
“Yeah but he’s old enough to go to some type of school? That would be the perfect time for her to sneak up on him?” Voight replies, “Someone find out where and someone needs to check in with their CI’s and see if they have any info on how Camila and Bayo got here, where they’re staying, and why they’re smuggling the weapons in.”
Reid’s got a sparkle in his eye at Voight making his own demands. “I’m going to talk with Coty. Since she knows Camila better than all of us, maybe she can figure out if there’s any other stomping grounds Camila may go to with Bayo.”
Dante speaks, “Hey, Deputy Chief. Maybe I can be the one to call and check in on Coty?”
‘Since it sounds like you’re not really concerned about her well being in the first place.’ Dante thinks to himself.
Reid pauses, “Sutherland would reach out if there’s any new updates. I’ll handle this. You should focus on Camila and Bayo’s socials or their lack of.”
In response Dante sharply inhaled, dipping his head to let the chief know he hears him before going back to his desk. Once Reid takes his exit down the hall towards the interrogation and locker room, Dante makes quick work sending a text to Seraphina.
D: ease my mind and tell me you’re alright?
N: I’ll survive. Feels like I have brand new lungs to continue to exhale out the bs! Currently waiting on discharge papers is as entertaining as watching paint dry.
That brings a small smile to Dante’s lips.
D: glad to hear it! Speaking of exhaling the bs…Reid’s going to keep hounding you about Camila just a heads up. I couldn’t give him much since you know, wasn’t my crowd.
N: Yea, Thanks. I knew it wouldn’t be as simple as doing the lab work…he’s calling me now. Talk soon.
And just like that Dante has to push his main worry to the back of his mind and see what else he can contribute.
[5:08PM]
Thanks to one of Atwater’s CI’s they were able to get info that has the unit springing into action. That there were talks in the streets that there was some, “Black Panther lookin’ dude with a Frida Kahlo look alike on his arm, that were making promises of showing certain gangs a type of product they’ve never had before but would definitely like to have their hands on.”
Which led to searching an old abandoned factory that Camila’s mother used to work in and died on the job when Camila was around five years old. It made perfect sense to stash the weapons there but what they didn’t expect was the factory had its own underground path that led to…City Hall.
Trudy exits the building meeting the force out front. “Voight, Weaver, and I talked to security, there’s no evidence that Camila and Bayo ever stepped foot into City Hall in the last week. They do have evidence that Bayo tried to get his son’s birth certificate in hopes of getting him a passport but was denied. We’re seeking the blueprint of the building to see how we can get access to the basement since the state claims it was sealed two years ago due to flooding.”
Cook asks, “Where does that leave us?”
“For now we want all units surrounding the building until we get eyes or more info on their whereabouts.” Trudy informs telling multiple officers to spread out and get ready to lock down certain perimeters.
Just as Trudy turns back to the intelligence unit, she halts as Reid announces his arrival with Seraphina in tow. Dante furrows his brows itching to meet her half way but the two quickly make it over to the group.
“Deputy Chief,” Trudy greets, eyes briefly glancing at Seraphina, “What’s going on?”
Reid tells, “I had contact with Bayo. He and Camila are already inside of the building. They want to meet with us.”
That makes everyone snap their heads towards the building, eyes glancing from almost every window in hopes of spotting where the couple were located.
“Us as in…” Trudy trails off, wondering how the hell Reid was able to get in contact with their suspect within these short span of hours.
It sounded as sketchy as it looked.
Reid jams a thumb at Seraphina, “Coty and I will go in. Once we navigate which floor they’re on, Weaver will request two of you on certain floors to box them in.”
“We’re going in blind?” Kim questions, frowning, “We don’t even know long they’ve been in the building, while we’ve been here for a while with no sight of them from other workers.”
Dante’s jaw is clenched as he peers over at Seraphina who meets his gaze. He completely agrees with Kim. Camila and Bayo automatically have the upper advantage.
Reid blinks and states, “No. Bayo and I have come to an understanding, to talk this through.”
“Why is Coty going in there?” Atwater is confused.
Reid doesn’t miss a beat, “Camila wants to see her.”
“So what?” Dante feels the words pushing out of his lips full of venom, “And we’re just gonna offer her up on a silver platter because she said so?”
Reid shakes his head and he steps closer to Dante to look him in the eye, “Of course not. She’ll be protected, she’ll be with me and Weaver. In fact an officer is getting her a vest as we speak.”
Dante shakes his head in complete disbelief, not finding comfort in the deputy chief’s words at all.
Trudy takes control of this now, “Coty…are you comfortable going in there?”
“You mean meeting with a gang member and possible militant terrorist? Not at all,” Seraphina lets out a humorless laugh, “I’m already in it and they’ve also targeted my family now too if I didn’t so.”
Adam peeks at Dante who has his brows raised so high they might fall off his face, and speaks, “Wait a minute, what do you mean target your family?”
“And what do you mean too?” Dante pressed, although his eyes are on Reid.
It would only make sense that Reid was threatening Seraphina over all of this. When it came to Seraphina in the work field, Dante knew how she worked. She was just as dependable as the rest of the intelligence unit, steady, methodical, and if given a task, she knew what to do with it.
She closes her eyes for a moment before dropping this information on them all, “Not only are chemical weapons involved but there’s also bombing involved. TSF didn’t like that Sutherland and I collected their latest blood diamond, I was their best option to pick so they have a bomb currently set at my parents’ in Kansas City.”
“Oh hell nawl.”
Dante doesn’t hold back now, pulling Seraphina tightly into his arms. She’s tense against him but her nose buries right into his shoulder, eyes closing tightly as her heart raced.
“Bomb squad has been contacted out there and it’s being dealt with.” Reid assured, “Right now we need to have our head in the game and be on alert for any possible bombing here. SWAT and Chicago’s bomb squad has also been contacted for our own safety. Where’s Voight?”
Trudy points at the building, “Inside.”
Reid walks off, letting Dante have his moment with Seraphina.
When Dante pulls back from the short haired woman, she doesn’t meet his eyes, using her knuckles to wipe away any moisture underneath her eyes. Trudy reaches out to squeeze Seraphina’s shoulder being telling the rest of the unit which side of the building to take. Once giving them their tasks, she turns to make her way back inside the lobby as well.
“Nina, you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. We can figure out another way.” Dante tried to persuade Seraphina, holding onto her shoulders.
Seraphina shakes her head, dejected, “I can’t back out of this…not for my parents and not for you.”
“…what do you mean not for me?” Dante tried to catch her eyes.
Seraphina sighs as she can see Ruzek offer to take a vest from another officer to bring over to the two. Atwater, Burgess, and Cook all hang back some talking in hushed tones but can’t help but to let their eyes linger on the main two.
“We need Coty, Burgess, and Cook inside now.” Voight’s voice comes in through the walkie.
Cook answers, “Copy that, Sarge. On the way.”
Cook glances at Dante one last time, before Kim whispers something to her and they walk off together, knowing Dante needed another minute.
“Dante…we got to get her ready.” Adam’s tone isn’t pushy but there is a hint of urgency, “She’ll be good with Weaver. Stick close to Weaver.” He tells Coty who takes a breath.
He makes a motion with his finger for her to turn towards him but Dante snatched the vest from Adam’s hands instead.
“Alright then,” Adam mutters sending a look to Kevin who simply shrugs and he takes his leave to circle the back of the city hall building.
It’s evident that Dante is upset as he pulls some straps off the vest, “Arm up.”
The weight of the vest almost makes Seraphina want to tumble over but she keeps her head up in that moment. She needed to turn her worries off and get through this…she just hopes it doesn’t end in devastations.
Making sure it was tight to Seraphina’s chest, it’s her turn to reassure him, “It’ll be fine.”
“I should be the one in there with you.” Dante says, “None of us know what Camila’s mindset is.”
“I know but there’s not many options here, Tay.” Seraphina replies, “We all do what we gotta do, and get what we get as a result.”
Dante swallows, “But what does that result look like?”
“…I guess we’ll see.”
Dante doesn’t like that answer but he takes her hand, bringing it to his lips to press a kiss there. She squeezes his hand back, “Please, be careful in there.”
“You too,” Seraphina offers a small smile that doesn’t reach her eyes and begins to walk away, making his chest tighten.
Their fingertips brush against each other before distance is created. She sends a two finger wave to Kevin, before fully carrying on with a purpose although her heart is drumming right in her ears.
“C’mon man, we’re not gonna think the worse here.” Kevin tried to ease his partner’s mind.
Dante puffs out a laugh, “Well I’m thinking it, bro. This is a lot, I-I can’t lose her for good too.”
“I know but you can’t think like that.” Kevin squeezes his shoulders, “We’re gonna do our damn best to make sure everybody is alright at the end of the day, like we always do.”
“Just like you made sure Nina was alright when she first told you about what Reid was putting her through.” Dante can’t help but to throw a jab, “Look how well that worked out. If we would have gotten ahead of this—
Kevin shakes his head, “I get that you’re in your feelings right now, so I’m gonna ignore you trying to put this off on me instead of the real person you’re pissed off with. I did my part as a friend to that girl and I’m also doing that now out of respect for you. I’m here. Go take a breather because we ain’t got time to start some beef, what’s done is done and we’re here now.”
Dante scoffs, eyeing the taller man up and down, shoving off Kevin’s hand from his shoulder, before walking off himself to where he was told to scope out the area.
[5:43PM]
The fifth floor is where all hell breaks loose.
Weaver secretly receives information from Peter (through an ear piece) that Reid has previously been in touch with Bayo before, seeking his own chemical weapon as soon as they touched down in Chicago. When Weaver receives news of this, her gaze going to Reid, he already suspects that she figured something out that would ruin this. With a swiftness, Reid chooses to whip the butt of his gun against her forehead, knocking the woman to the ground and takes her weapon.
“I’d give this to you but…I hear you’re not a fan of guns.” Reid taunts, aiming Weaver’s gun at Seraphina who keeps her hands in the air, “Let’s go, we have a meeting to get to.”
He roughly turns Seraphina around, pressing Weaver’s gun to her spine.
“I thought we were friends,” Seraphina sarcastically says as Reid leads her down the hallway, “This isn’t how friends treat one another.”
Reid laughs, “There’s levels to friendship, Coty. You shouldn’t just be realizing that.”
He shoves her to the right, around another lengthy corner.
Before she knows it, they make it to a room full of cubicles before seeing two figures and a bleeding mayor tied to a chair. They’re all in front of the large window, which is facing the back of the city hall building.
“Glad you two could join us!” Camila greets, her tone nasally, “Seraphina…it’s been ages. I heard about your little mishap at the university’s lab, it’s good to see that our little gift didn’t take you out before we could meet again.”
Seraphina scoffs, “If you were so concerned about what I’ve been up to, there’s this thing called social media, where you can keep up with people.”
“Well yeah but that would ruin the element of surprise, duh.”
Seraphina feels her eyes roll at the darker haired woman. The only thing that was different about camila was the darkness of her eyes, before there used to be an ounce of light in them but now it just felt like peering into an endless abyss. Camila is dressed in simple outerwear, peacoat with tan trousers and would blend in well just roaming the streets—which was most likely her goal.
Her hair is as long as ever, square jawline with a tiny beauty mark on her chin, thick brows that almost connect at the center, lengthy lashes, and a nice golden undertone to her usual fair skin. She still looked like that little girl Seraphina once knew.
“This reunion is nice and everything but did you bring what I asked for?” Reid interrupts, making Camila barely glance at him before speaking to Bayo over her shoulder.
Bayo, who stood at least 6’5 with the prettiest of ebony skin was the quietist in the room, steps away to grab a steel suitcase while Camila keeps causally chatting, as if she didn’t have the mayor bleeding out in a chair.
“Why are you working with them, Reid?” Seraphina nostrils flare as she glared back at the dimpled man, “What kind of deputy chief works with people that harms others?”
Camila laughs, “Oh honey…you’ve been around Dante too much that you must have forgotten that cops aren’t saints. Reid has an agenda here, he wants to play the field. If he has what we have, he’ll be untouchable. Isn’t that right, Charlie?”
Reid nudged Seraphina towards Bayo but Camila holds her hand out, “You don’t have to man handle her, Charlie. I’m sure us girlies can have a civil conversation while you two men chop it up, huh? Go on.”
Reid grits into Seraphina’s ear, “Don’t even think about doing anything stupid.”
The woman glowers at his back before settling her eyes on Camila’s amused one’s. She leans her elbows along the edge of the chair, completely ignoring the man slumped over in front of her.
“So Manny, really? I thought you would have been married to Dante Torres by now! What I remembered, I always assumed there was something there. Then he did that thing which led to clink clink and that deprived you of making it work romantically, then he’s back on the scene, you basically just said fuck us, but in the end, you chose Manny because Dante didn’t choose you. You settled.”
Seraphina spits out, “Everyone seems to be so invested in what I’ve got going on. I don’t know how you know Manny but what I do know is, you chose your sister’s boyfriend. Let’s talk about that.”
“What’s there to talk about,” Camila shrugs, “She didn’t want him anymore after he got her pregnant. Didn’t want a better life for her and my nephew so…I stepped in.”
“And you don’t see anything wrong with that?”
“Wrongs are a matter of opinion so…No?” Her eyes wonder at the judgement placed on her, “I have a fantastic life and can provide better for my nephew than my own sister can.”
“Is that why you’re here?”
“You’re getting warm, sis.”
“Not your sis, your sister is the one you screwed over.”
“You and Amaia didn’t even fuck with each other like that!” Camila outbursts, “She bad mouthed your devotion to Dante all the time behind closed doors! The puta was jealous and once she got a great love, she tossed it in the trash. Don’t feel sorry for her, she doesn’t deserve it. You and I could have been great friends but you overstepped.”
“Did I? Or did you purposely leave that diamond there for someone to find?”
“Nope. I got that diamond from France and was planning to auction it off. It was worth over a mill and you destroyed it snooping around in my business, which means you took money out of my bag so now…I have to get even.”
“And how do you plan to do that?”
“Either you join TSF again or I’ll blow your family the fuck up.” Camila beams, “Or better yet…maybe I’ll have one of my men take Torres down. Put you out of your miserable suffering so you can actually be in love with Manny. He seems like a great guy. Full of potential.”
Seraphina steps to Camila now who stands up straight, hand on her waistband now in warning. “Is Manny part of TSF?”
Camila lets out a cackle, “Don’t give him that much credit, he’s simply a pawn in this and we’ve got him exactly where we want him.”
She’s not sure what that means but the wheels are turning.
“So what do you say Sera? Want to take a walk down memory lane?”
“I say…if Reid didn’t bring you to my attention at my parents’ house weeks ago…I would have never remembered how much of an obsessive, pathetic, and scared little girl you are.”
The smile on Camila’s face drops, as she roars shoving the mayor in the chair to the floor to get to Seraphina. When Seraphina’s eyes move from the mayor back to Camila, all Seraphina sees is Camila’s backhand which draws blood.
“How dare you, bitch? I try to give you an opening and this is how you treat me?” Camila yells, “You actually looked out for me as a kid, was better to me than my own dumbass sister and here I was trying to do your ungrateful snobby ass a favor!”
Seraphina spits blood at Camila’s designer boots, her mouth stinging as she uses her sleeve to wipe at her busted lip, “Guess what, Cami girl? We were never friends and I definitely wouldn’t want someone like you being my friend now.”
And her fist goes flying to Camila’s nose, sending her head back with a crunch before Camila drops to her knees. Seraphina circles around camila, reaching for her waistband as Seraphina cradled her now injured hand to her chest, while searching for Camila’s gun. Both women hear the sound of two rounds being fired, followed by the sound of screaming and glass breaking.
Camila’s nose is leaking blood while she watches in horror as Bayo was shoved out the window by Reid who stands by the edge of broken glass. He slowly turns around, best villain stance on before the room engulfs in light seconds later, followed by the loudest noise that could knock the sound out of your ears for good.
It happens so fast as the ground beneath them all collapses. Seraphina’s eyes close waiting for impact but open through the dust, feeling herself wheeze again until she realizes that she’s holding onto Camila’s pants leg, who’s holding onto a black steel pipe that’s sticking out of the plaster.
“Camila!” Seraphina calls up to the younger woman, who snaps her attention down to meet her eyes, “Hold on.”
Camila’s hair falls like a curtain around her as Seraphina dingles from Camila’s pants leg. A crooked smile appears on her lips then as she stared down at Seraphina, “Enjoy the ride down, Sera.”
And with that being said, Camila sends a fast kick to Seraphina’s shoulder, then another to her face, making her easily lose her grip, and with satisfaction Camila listens to the thud beneath her, followed by more cracking and dropping of debris.
Camila swings her body upward, dragging herself back to what’s left of the fifth floor. She rests on her back, letting out a laugh for a second before double checking her pockets for her remaining detonator. With a groan she shoved it back into her pocket, and gets to her feet and steps into the unstable hall.
Unbeknownst to her she’s not aware that someone witnessed what transpired just a minute before the bombing.
“Camila Cartagena, stop right there!” Catherine Weaver’s voice calls out, as she uses the wall for support, blood dripping down to her eye.
Camila’s eyes go wide as she makes her way over to the elevator but second guesses that, choosing to look for the door for the stairs. Just as she eyes it and starts moving towards it, she feels something stick right through her calve, almost sending her to her knees again.
She lets out a scream and winces, glancing down to see a pocket knife sticking out from the back of her leg. It’ll slow her down enough for someone to get her if a concussed Weaver can’t. Camila yanks the knife out from her flesh and throws it down the opposite hall before limping to the door.
The long haired woman pulls open the door and disappears from Weaver’s sight, who’s world is spinning.
[7:09PM]
The thud of Dante’s heart is in sync with the ringing that takes over the sound in his left ear. There’s something warm and wet that touches the side of his neck. He’s been knocked over onto his back into the street, there’s gravel and rocks that’s digging beneath his buzzed hair. His eyes fight against the smoke and dirt that’s present in the air and it doesn’t take him long to start moving, followed by a deep groan that his body protests.
“Dante.” It’s muffled but it comes from his right as hands latch onto the sleeves of his jacket.
His body aches and he’s sure there’s a cut on the back of his pulsating head, he blinks hard focusing in on a bruised Atwater who’s helping him to his feet.
There’s a twing of something at the sight of the older man…anger maybe? However the throbbing in his body overshadows that in this very moment.
“Hey, hey. You good?” Atwater checks Dante, steadying him, while his eyes scan over his team member.
Quickly Dante coughs into his opposite wrist, a tickle in his throat by the mucus mixed with something metallic. It’s stuck in his throat and he’s grateful nothing is present on his sleeve, deciding to just clear his throat a few times and manages to give a nod to Atwater but even that motion feels heavy. He can’t hear what else Kevin is saying to him but there’s a pull to bring his eyes to search through the smoke towards the city hall building.
Where he was once standing much closer to.
His breathing hitches, taking a moment to pick up on the sound of multiple car alarms going off after the explosion. Through the dust of fog it appears as if they all stepped into some apocalyptic scene and it’s anything short of a pleasant sight. He moves to step towards the damaged building and Kevin follows him, his hand almost tightening and not leaving Dante’s jacket as he moves with him. Dante’s eyes are in slits as he waits for the smoke to clear more, trying to get a better look at the destruction.
“Torres, Atwater come in. What’s your status?” Voight’s gruff tone crackles over the walkie.
Kevin does the honors since it’s taking Dante a little longer to figure out what just happened. “Sarg. Torres and I still located north of the building. We’re good, banged up, but good.”
Last Dante remembered was Voight and Ruzek were taking the back of the twelve story building, whereas Burgess and Cook were inside taking floor four and six. A frown now appears in between Dante’s brows as another crackle came through both of their walkies.
“Burgess here.” Kim announced, “I can confirm that the explosion occurred on floor five…taking all of the floors below down with it. I’m hurt…but able to move. There’s at least two fatalities that I’ve counted but any other civilians I find, I will proceed with an escape route—if possible.”
Dante shares a look with Kevin, already aware that this didn’t feel over and can only imagine how Adam was feeling.
“Copy.” Voight answers first on his end.
It’s not long beyond the blurring car alarms that the fire truck sirens can be heard in the distance. Dante feels the urge to get closer to the building, the cloud in his brain is fighting hard for him to remember who else is missing.
The next crackle stops Dante in his tracks, “…This is Cook, located on floor six. I have eyes on where the explosion occurred. There is minor damage to one section of floor six, no casualties.”
Adam is the one who manages to respond to this, yet it is evident that his voice is slightly shaky.
A minute goes by until Dante feels a familar buzz in his back pocket. His response is slightly delayed but he pulls his phone from his pocket, “Torres.”
“Dante!”
It’s Peter.
“There’s a second set of chemical weapons in the basement of the city hall county building!” Peter’s information is rapid on the other line, “Bayo was found deceased on the south end of the building. Catherine reported that she witnessed Reid shoot and then push Bayo out of the window. Bayo also fired his gun at the same time and set off the explosion on the fifth floor. We believe Reid has connections to TSF as well.”
Dante exhales, “…Where are you now?”
“In the basement.” Peter states as if it’s obvious, “I want to make this clear: Reid is not working alone.”
It comes back to Dante in pieces: his disagreement with Seraphina going into the building to confront Camila, him snatching the vest from Adam to strap Seraphina into the bulletproof protection to Reid pulling him aside to share his last words of reassurance to Dante…that Reid would be with Seraphina every step of the way.
Which was far from comforting with that man’s crooked dimpled smile.
“…where’s Nina?”
“Dante…she was on the fifth floor with Reid.” Peter reminds, his tone empathic.
Dante doesn’t feel the phone slip from his non-bleeding ear but he does feel his blood run cold. His chest is tight, the back of his neck burns, and the environment in front of him feels as if he’s on a merry-go-round. He stumbles back but thankfully Kevin was there to catch him.
“Whoa, hey! What’s happening, Dante?”
Voight’s voice comes back into the walkie, “Be on the lookout for Camila. Cook says she last saw her fleeing—
It was as if the polluted air guided Dante’s jaw towards the right, his eyes tightening as he panted trying to find his breath but he ends up finding much more.
A silhouette that he knows is the prime suspect.
The adrenaline that arrives is much more powerful than anything else that his entire being wants to feel.
Dante doesn’t want to think the worst so he buries it.
His instincts say it’s Camila Cartagena so he snatches himself from Kevin’s grasp and begins to move towards the figure that’s a great distance from them all.
“Hey!” He calls out and clears the tickle in his throat away, watching as her head snaps up. Her long dark hair is whipping in the air and it’s clear that there’s fear in her frame.
Kevin is frowning, hand waving the remaining smoke out of the way to see what his team member got his eyes on.
‘I’ll be damned.’ He thinks to himself.
Dante’s hand goes to his waist band as he starts charging over the debris, being careful not to trip as he calls out one last time, “Chicago PD! Hands in the air, Camila!”
Which only invokes her to set off into a run, which is more of a gallop as it appears that she’s also injured and Dante doesn’t hesistate to run right after her.
She caused this and Dante had no problem doing what he had to do.
Atwater is not too far behind the buzzed haired officer, calling it into Voight on the walkie while he also chases after the two.
It has been proven that it was going to be a crazy shift but lately…it’s just any other day with the intelligence unit.
Something they’ve all been built for.
[7:14PM]
Dante is hot on Camila’s heels, chasing after her as she limps into a nearby alleyway. His gun is aimed right at Camila and yells to her again, “Camila, stop!”
She doesn’t, still trying to get to the end of the alleyway which holds a vehicle at the end of it, there’s a man standing by the side of the dark blue van, dressed in all blue, fitted cap, and shades but the beard is a dead giveaway.
Dante’s eyes falter to Camila tripping over a can of tomato soup, ankle rolling as she collapses to the ground onto her stomach. She reaches out her hand in the direction of the man who’s shielding himself from who he really is.
“Manuel!” Camila calls out, confirming just what Dante was suspecting.
In that moment Dante doesn’t care that his body wants to fall apart, he starts running again just as Manny scrambles to get back to the car.
“Atwater!” Dante calls over his shoulder.
Atwater makes it seconds after Dante calls out his name, tending to cuffing Camila while also watching as Dante pushes himself to run to the end of the alleyway. Gun aimed, slightly blurry, vision zoomed in, he breathes as he shoots directly at the tires causing the van to swerve right onto the sidewalk and into the corner of a brick building.
Lowering his gun, Dante walks over to the steaming car, adrenaline getting the best of him as he pulls open the driver’s side, smacking the hat off Manny Castillo’s head, along with yanking the shades from his eyes as the man tries to adjust to what just happened. Dante grips onto the collar of Manny’s jacket, dragging him from the car and shoves the man to the ground.
“W-wait, man! I can explain!”
That doesn’t stop Dante from cocking his arm back and sending his fist right to Manny’s face. One hit doesn’t feel like enough, not even the blood that splatters onto the ground, gets him to stop beating the man. Even when Manny puts his arms up to defend himself, Dante doesn’t even see a person beneath his fists and that’s always a dangerous thing.
It isn’t until hands lock around his arms, pulling them behind his back and yanking him away from a bleeding Manny, that his vision comes back in specs.
“GET OFF ME!”
“Not until you calm your ass down, man.” Ruzek’s voice barks, “Do I need to get medics to sedate you? Huh?”
“No!” Dante roars, “He’s been playing us all this time!”
“I know brother,” Adam gently says as Voight is on a knee looking at Dante’s damage, “But we still need answers. We got Camila and now we got Manny, just try and cool off.”
Dante says nothing but he’s puffing away and stops fighting against Adam’s hold. Once Adam feels like it’s okay, he lets him go and Dante doesn’t even bother to look behind him, going back the way he came.
“Trudy, Torres is headed your way.” Voight warns the salt and pepper haired woman.
Trudy’s voice comes in, sounding a bit croaky, “Copy that.”
When Dante gets back to the street that contains the city hall building, he notices that the fire department has made their way here. A good amount of firefighters are seen escorting those from the lobby.
Trudy meets Dante before he can get to the front doors. “Torres, look at me. You’re not going in there.”
His eyes are wild but they blink back to the older woman that holds him in place. He’s glad to see that she made it out only covered in dust and maybe a few cuts but there’s still people missing.
His person being one of them.
“Burgess, Cook, Weaver, Sutherland, and Nina are still in there.”
Trudy nods her head, “I understand that. We have to let the firefighters work just like we worked to do what we needed to do, right? I heard you got Camila, which is already a win. You need to get checked out by the medics and let the firefighters do what they do best, okay.”
It wasn’t a question but Dante tried to juke the woman but she moves with him. She raises a brow at him, asking him to try her again and this time she wouldn’t be so nice about it. Taking his shoulders she spins him and shoves him towards an ambulance, “Take care of yourself first.”
He meets a doctor named John Frost who’s helping out the medics but anything else after that is a blur.
[8:10PM]
With a bandage covering his ear, dissolved stitches to his scalp, and being diagnosed with a minor concussion, Dante is back on his feet. He doesn’t care that he was told to take it easy because people were being taken out of the building but there was no sight of the people they were all looking for.
“No Reid?” Adam whispers to Kevin who makes a noise to confirm that.
He decides to check in with Kim and then Cook, who all seem to be doing alright. Since the lobby was mainly crushed in debris, the firefighters had to seek another way in to the other floors.
By using the aerials.
It was nerve wrecking being confined to the grounds but Dante was going to stay busy. He made his way over to one of the cop cars that held Camila and pulls open the door.
“You’ve got more chemical weapons stored in the basement…is that all of them?”
Camila who has her head resting back, dried blood appearing like a waterfall underneath her nostrils she sighs, “A magician never reveals their secrets.”
“Oh yeah? and you must also think that your act is not running out.”
Camila smirks, “What makes you think yours isn’t?”
Dante tightens his stare but he had no fear in his heart at her words, “Where’s the rest of your crew?”
“All over.” Camila flicks her hair out of her face with her hands still behind her back, “I bet it’s burning you up inside wondering what Manuel’s involvement with TSF is or even Charlie’s. That you couldn’t protect the one woman who loves you to death. I had the power to set both of you free and it looks like we’re both single now huh, Cariño?”
The way Camila runs her tongue over her teeth as a way of being sexy makes Dante recoil. He steps back and slams the door right in her face, disgust taking over his features.
“You doing alright, Torres?” Adam inquired as he falls into step with him.
Dante muttered, “As good as I can be right now. You? How’s Kim and Kiana?”
Adam shrugs, “Hanging in there. I think Cook will be out first since everything happened below her floor. The firefighters will then work their way down. It’s going to be long night.”
Dante doesn’t doubt it.
[8:33PM]
Dante is telling the remaining unit what he’s learned from Peter about Reid, which makes Voight sneer at this revelation. He makes his way over to Chief Pascal, telling him to tell his firefighters that if they see the Deputy Chief, that he’s armed, dangerous, and they shouldn’t trust him.
Soon Dante spots Peter handing multiple cases off to SWAT and some of the members running in the direction Peter tells them. He makes his way over to the auburn haired man.
“Torres…you look like hell.”
Dante shrugs, “Just another day at the office…how many cases did you find?”
“At least twelve.” Peter sighs, “Did you catch her?”
Dante nods, “And Manny too.”
Peter chews on his bottom lip, “I fucking knew it! He was too clean. I tried to tell Weaver to take another look at a sealed case of him that occurred in Long Island, NY. She just assumed I was paranoid.”
“I did a background check on him before,” Dante frowns.
Peter doesn’t hide his smirk, “I’m sure you did but PD doesn’t have the same tools as us, sorry to tell you, man.”
He lightly pats his shoulder, trying to steer his mind right. Peter slowly turns to face the same direction as Dante who’s staring up at the partially destroyed building. “Coty will pull through, she’s a fighter.”
“I know…it’s just something Camila said.”
Peter snorts, “From of what little I know of her, she gives the impression that she likes to bite off more than she can chew.”
“Sutherland.” A SWAT member gets his attention, making him excuse himself from Dante’s side.
[9:43PM]
Cook and Weaver are escorted from the south end of building. Dante and Cook both squeeze each other’s shoulders, glad that one another is okay, being able to walk away with minor bumps and bruises.
“Sarge, I’ll get down to the district, keep an eye on Camila and Manny.” Cook decides to help in that way, which Voight approves of.
Voight and Weaver shared a hushed conversation with Peter later joining them, most likely talking about their findings when it comes to Reid, leaving Dante, Adam, and Kevin to assist any other way they could on ground.
[10:07PM]
Kim and more workers are escorted out of the building. She’s got a nasty bump on her head, she’s pale yet sweaty and a puncture wound to her abdomen, that requires a hospital visit just in case. Adam gets instant clearance to leave the scene, leaving with his fiancée and telling Kevin to keep him posted on everything else, eyes lingering on the back of Dante who stands firm with his hands in his pockets peering up at the city hall building.
[10:34PM]
A tug to Dante’s chest, after helping lift another worker into the ambulance makes the buzzed haired officer turn in the direction of the tug.
“I need a stretcher!” A firefighter, a young man with blue eyes calls out as he hands off a person to Trudy’s husband.
The medics rush over as Mouch lifts the person onto it.
Dante is shoving his way through a crowd of patrol officers, barely mumbling an apology afterwards as he gets a better look of the person they’re putting an oxygen mask on. A flashlight is being shined into their eyes as Dante chokes out, “Nina.”
His heart squeezes in his chest, breath getting trapped as he awaits for some sign of life.
Just at the sound of his voice, her eyes seem to open. Even tried to sit up but her dislocated collarbone makes it difficult.
“Nope. You need to lay down or you’re gonna make it worse,” A paramedic says, Novak, Dante thinks her name is.
Dante can tell Seraphina is mouthing off behind the mask and that gets a chuckle out of the man. Her good eye sets back on Dante and her fingers on the hand that isn’t clutched to her chest, reaches out towards him.
Novak does the honors of starting to roll the stretcher forward. There’s easy smiles on both of their faces, a sign of relief to be back near each other…is also short lived.
“Shots fired!” A voice rings out as many start to take cover.
“Go! Go! Go!” Another medic, an Asian woman, Violet, Seraphina vaguely remembers her introducing herself as, quickly rolls the stretcher towards the ambulance as more shots ring out.
Opening her eyes, Seraphina arched her head back, ignoring the pain in her body as she stares upside down watching in terror as Dante holds onto the space right underneath his jaw, convulsing as he lay on the ground.
Her screams are deafening beneath the mask as Violet and Novak briefly witness the situation, quickly rearranging the stretcher around to get inside the ambo. More shots are fired and they’re coughing themselves before racing to climb inside the vehicle, sirens sounding as defensive shots are returned.
[12:22AM]
Even if Novak didn’t have to sedate Seraphina in the back of the ambulance, she was sure she would still be numb as she sat in a wheelchair barely blinking at the sight in front of her.
None of this should have happened.
Dante Torres shouldn’t be lying in a hospital bed with a ventilator down his throat.
His mother shouldn’t be balled up in a chair, rosary almost embedded into the skin of her hands, jumping at every sound, waking her from her much needed slumber with tear stained cheeks.
None of this should have happened.
Seraphina touches his hand, it’s still warm to the touch and he should be squeezing her hand back. His spring eyes should be open, staring at her and holding onto every word she shares. Those same eyes should be rolling as she tries to put him in a patterned shirt when she drags him out to “run errands,” with her.
Her person shouldn’t be so still.
Thanks to the morphine, it doesnt hurt as much as she manages to place a kiss by the corner of his eye.
And when she tells a nurse she’s ready to be brought back to her room, it’s already been decided, Seraphina Coty was checking herself out tonight.
[1:15AM]
Voight holds onto the chair as Seraphina makes her way into the interrogation room with a crutch.
She is careful as she sits, not wanting to tear the stitches that hold her thigh together.
Camila lifts her head from the cold table, eyes widening in surprise at the view of Seraphina. Her hair is scrapped back into a messy ponytail, there’s a scar on the corner of her mouth that camila gave to her, exhaustion all over her face, one eye bruised purple, a sling on one arm, and a cast on her hand.
“Well…you’re not what I was expecting.”
Seraphina hums, “A lot of things aren’t gonna be what you expect from now on, girl.”
“Ohhhh,” Camila sits back suddenly entertained still having gauze shoved up her nostrils, “I have to tell you, I’ve seen it all. Nothing you or these pigs in suits can do will ever put fear in my heart.”
Voight watches from behind Camila, eyes flicking back to Seraphina whose face immediately goes dark.
“That remains to be seen,” Seraphina tells the younger woman in front of her before letting a sinister smile take over her features, “Especially since you’ve just made an enemy out of me. You’re just not that girl and I think you need reminding.”
Camila swallows but knows how to push the button, “Aw…Dante didn’t make it huh?”
Which makes Seraphina jump at her, easily making Camila suck in a breath and even flinch in her chair.
A pointed look is sent Camila’s way as Seraphina taps her nails against the table. Her gaze turns to Voight who’s watching her every move. Seraphina stiffly moves her body to the right in search of the camera, eyes flicking back to Voight’s who nods his head at her.
“You’re not going to make it if you don’t tell us what we need to know,” Seraphina argues, “See, I know exactly what Bayo used to make those bullets that harmed many people. And if I wanted to, I can make a replica and set it off in this exact room. And I know you’re not ready to die…you want to live for your nephew. So what makes you think, you deserve to outlive other people who didn’t do a damn thing to you?”
Camila looks away from Seraphina, her words clearly having a effect on her.
“You’re lucky I’m letting you sleep on it,” Seraphina leans forward so Camila has no choice but to look her in the eye, “But make no mistake, this isn’t me giving you a choice. You’re going to give your remaining crew members that came here with you up, including the exact one who hurt Dante. You wanted my attention so bad…well…you’ve got it, friend. I’m awake.”
Voight knows to give Seraphina a minute as she finds a moment of quiet in the intelligence unit’s locker room. He gives her that time, taking Camila back downstairs to lock up while she’s seated on the bench face to face with Dante’s locker. It doesn’t take her long to figure out the combo, a mini Bible is right on the first shelf among other items that belong to him. There’s an old photo of him and Momma Catalina when he was a baby taped right on the inside of the door. Seraphina spots the extra white shirt that’s underneath the mini Bible and brings it right underneath her nose.
It almost feels as if he’s right behind her, catching her in the act, the warmth of his eyes, tells her that she doesn’t have to hold it in.
The sob rips through her from somewhere deep in her chest that she has to feel around to plop back onto the bench, or else she might curl up into a ball on this very floor.
Voight eventually makes his way back upstairs, hearing the cries from outside the locker room. He leans against the wall, folding his arms and lets his head rest back against the wall.
Seraphina Coty liked to say she didn’t bury her feelings once she truly cared. At times she knows she can be too reserved with her emotions, appeared closed off to those that didn’t know her, yet she felt that things take time but for the right person she wouldn’t dare neglect what deserves to be felt.
And right now?
She was feeling it all.

Fight
Hailey upton x Rome Green-Upton
Summary: while Rome is undercover he get a call from torres telling him his wife was missing dropping everything he leaves and goes back to Chicago to help the team find his wife
Hailey was at her locker, packing her stuff, when her phone started ringing, making Hailey look at her phone with a small smile when she saw Rome's name. Rome and Hailey have been communicating, but sadly, not as much as they wanted to.
"Hey," Hailey said as she answered her phone. She grabbed her bag and walked out of the locker room. "Hey!" Rome said, sounding tired. "You sound tired," Hailey said, causing Rome to chuckle a little. "Yeah, I am, but how is the training going? Is it helping you sleep?" Rome asked, knowing that Hailey had been having trouble since he and Jay left. He felt guilty that not long after Jay left he had to go undercover, which he didn't really have a choice of.
"Not really," Hailey said with a sigh as she reached her truck. "I will be home soon, before you know it," Rome said. "I know," Hailey said. Rome went to say something but was cut off when he heard knocking on his door. "I've got to go," Rome said, sitting up. "Me too; I'll talk to you later tonight," Hailey said. "Night," Rome said, hanging up.
Rome didn't know that after that call, after a few hours, Hailey went missing.
~~~
A day later
Hank walked into the tech room, where the team was sitting. "All right, tell me we've got something we can use." Hank said, stopping behind the chair and looking at the screen. "The footage is too grainy to make out much, except for the stats of our offenders." Trudy told Hank There's no sign of the offenders' vehicle in the footage, and there are too many blind spots on PODs. I mean, I can't follow them." Kim spoke in a stressed tone. "OK, what about him, the victim?" Hank asked and pointed at the screen. Kim zoomed in, saying, "That's not enough, not for facial rec." kevin said
"All right, then her car, cell towers, witnesses, and forensics." Hank said he was walking to the other side. "We've got nothing we can use, boss." Adam said as Dante walked in. "I think I got him. I pulled Upton's cell records," Dante stated as he reached the others. "The last incoming call was from a phone registered to Lee Byers," Dante said, handing everyone Lee's file. "The duration of the call was two minutes, and then minutes later, her phone was off. Multiple priors for drug possession. He was arrested six years ago by Jay Halstead and Rome green. Two days after he got pinched, all three charges were dropped." dante continued
"So Halstead and Green flipped him." Hank said, "Guy's a CI." Hank added, holding the folder up. "Upton must have taken over as his handler; she was meeting him for a tip, and one of them was followed." Trudy said, putting the dots together, "All right, so get his phone dump, grab his CI file, run everyone this guy ever informed on, met, talked to, or ever walked by." Hank said, and the team started to move around. "We got an LKA on this guy?" Hank asked Torres. "He lives with his girlfriend, Jessica Owens, down on Humboldt." Dante answered
"Search her place. Bring her in." Hank said he was making the team, but Dante stopped. "Should we call Rome?" Dante asked, making the team stop and look at Hank. Hank turns around and nods his head.
~~~
Rome had been undercover for months, and he was starting to get tired of it. He missed Hailey and his team, and all he wanted was to be with Hailey. What sucked is that Rome was only 2 hours away, but he was dealing with a really dangerous situation and didn't want to put her or the team in danger, so he kept away.
Of course, they talked when he got to his apartment.
Right now, he was at the bar working to get more information when his phone rang. He saw that it was Dante. "I've got to take this," Rome said, not letting them answer, knowing that if Dante was calling something wrong, Rome would answer the phone. "What's wrong?" Rome asked with a worried tone, "Hailey is missing," Dante said, making Rome freeze for a few seconds. "I'll be there soon," Rome said. "Okay," Dante said, and they hung up.
1 hour later
Rome got to the district, rushed in, and saw Trudy waiting for him. Rome mumbled a hello before rushing upstairs to see the group, minus Hank, who was in his office waiting for Rome to arrive. "We've got anything?" Rome asked as the group turned around and looked at him as Hank walked out of his office. "No," Kim said, sadly shaking her head. Rome closed his eyes and sighed before opening his eyes and looking at Hank. "What happened?" Rome asked. "She went to meet Lee Byers when they were taken," Kevin said, making Rome look at him. "Lee Byers?" Rome asked, and Kevin nodded his head. "We have his girlfriend in interrogation," Dante said. Hank walked to Rome. "Let's go," Hank said, walking toward the interrogation room.
Rome and Hank walk into the room. Rome sets a picture down. "That's your boyfriend right there," he says, sliding the picture towards her. "In case you're wondering why you haven't seen or heard from him,He was abducted last night," Hank said, causing Jessica to look up at Hank.
"Did you know that?" Rome asked, leaning against the wall. "No, I did not know that." Jessica said, slightly shaking her head ."No?" Rome asked. "Then why won't you talk to my “officers?Hmm?" Hank asked, sitting in the chair. “You won't give them access.to your phone, your tech.You won't even answer a basic question.Why not?" Hank asked."Because I don't want to be involved." Jessica said, "You already are," Rome said.
"Involved in what?Do you know why he was taken?" Hank asked "No," Jessica said."Do you know who took him?" Hank asked "No," Jessica said, causing the room to be silent for a second."You're lying to us." Rome said, walking to the table, pulling the chair out, and sitting down."I'm telling the truth," Jessica said. "Then answer my questions." Hank started "What is Lee into?Why would he be followed?beaten, and abducted?" Hank asked Jessica, but she didn't answer.
“OK, let me explain something to you.Lee wasn't killed.He was taken.You know what that means?That means they want something from him. "Our guess?" Rome said. "They are going to hurt him until they get it." Hank started "Now, what is Lee involved in? You want him to be hurt?" Hank asked “I'm not trying to hurt him. I just don't know anything.Look, he's an addict. I got him clean, but this would not be the first time. Then he relapsed,and did something stupid. But that's not on me. I have no idea who would have taken him." Jessica said, causing Rome to glare at her .
~~~
Lee looked at Hailey tiredly. "You know, Rome always talked about you." Lee started, causing Hailey to stop what she was doing. "Yeah, I would ask how the wife was doing, and he'd just have the biggest smile on his face." Lee said with a small chuckle, causing Hailey to smile a little.
Lee stopped talking. "Hey. you still with me?" Hailey asked as she looked over, seeing Lee's eyes closed, "You've got to keep your eyes open." Hailey added that she was trying to break the other support bar but stopped when she heard the guys coming back, making her turn her head to the door.
"That can't have been an hour," Hailey said, moving to sit by Lee. "OK. We're going to do this nice and clean. OK? You got it. You know what to say?" Hailey asked, "Yeah." Lee said as the two men opened the door and walked in.
"Hour's up. Where's my money?" Mark asked, "He's going to take you to it." Hailey said, slightly nodding towards Lee, "I hid it." Lee said, "OK. Where?" Mark asked, "He's going to take you to it." Hailey said, "That's not what I'm asking." Mark said, getting irritated now, "Where is my money?" Mark asked again. "I hid it in a safe place, downtown. I'll take you to it." Lee said it tiredly.
Mark looked at Elijah, causing Elijah to look at him. Mark pointed the ax at Hailey and said, "Grab her." Mark said Elijah walked toward Hailey and said, "No, no, no! He's gonna take you." Hailey shouted as Elijah came closer, "No, no! No, no, no, no, no, no!" Lee shouted, "He's going to take you to it!" Hailey yelled
"No, no, no! She doesn't know where the money is." Lee shouted as Elijah lay hailey on the ground, "No, no, no! Please! We're going to get you the money. We're gonna take you to it." Hailey yelled terrified, "Don't hurt her!" Lee yelled again. "She doesn't know where the money is!" Lee shouted, causing Hailey to look at him for a second before looking back at Elijah. "Please! Please! Look at me!" Lee yelled, trying to get their attention.
Mark walks over to Hailey, looking down at her. "So do you want to keep your right hand or your left?" Mark asked, "Please! Please! Don't hurt her! Look at me! It's my fault! It's my fault!" Lee shouted, "I have friends who have money. We'll get you the money." Hailey said loudly, "Do you want to hear her beg, Lee?" Mark asked slightly, looking at Lee, "I can't help. Please! Please!" Lee begged, "Chop it." Elijah said, "Let's go with the right." Mark said, raising his ax.
"No, no, no, no!" Hailey yelled as she saw the ax come down, but I was stopped when Lee got up and shoved Mark away from Hailey, causing Elijah to tackle him into the wall. Mark pins Hailey to the ground as a gunshot goes off, causing Hailey to look over. Lee slowly slides down the wall with wide eyes.
"What the hell? What were you thinking?" Mark asked as Hailey crawled over to Lee, putting pressure on Lee's wound. "He was going to shoot me!" Elijah yelled at Mark.
"You idiot!" Mark yelled, hitting Elijah's arm. Elijah hit Mark back. "He fell on me! He was going to shoot!" Elijah yelled. "He had one hand!" Mark yelled out as he left the bathroom. Hailey gazes into Lee's eyes and says, "It's OK. It's OK." Hailey said "I'm sorry." Lee said, meeting Hailey's eyes, "It's OK." Hailey reassured, "She spent it." Lee said, "What?" Hailey asked, "It's all gone. The money's all gone." lee said His head falls down as he stops breathing. Hailey stares at him.
How are we going to get our money back now, huh?" Mark asked, looking at Elijah, "You idiot!" Mark said, snatching Elijah's gun from him, "What did you want me to do?" Elijah asked Mark to turn to Hailey. "Get up!" Mark said loudly, "He's dead." Hailey said, taking her hand from his wound, "Yeah, I can see that. Get up," Mark said as Hayley slowly got up.
"I know where your money is." Hailey said, looking at Mark, "No, you don't." Mark said, "He told me. We were trying to both stay alive, so we were going to take you to it." Hailey said, "You're lying to me." Mark said, "I'm not." Hailey said, "Tell me where it is then, or..." Mark paused and looked down at the gun. "I'll shoot you right here, right now." Mark said, "No. You'll shoot me as soon as I tell you." Hailey said, looking at both the guys, "He stole it for his girl. I know where she lives. I'll take you, and you can let me go." Hailey said Mark walks closer to Hayley, towering over her. "How about I just beatt it out of you?" Mark said, "That's worked well so far." Hailey said, looking at Mark with a deadpan look.
~~~
Rome sits on the bench in the locker room, looking at a photo of him and Hailey. Rome blames himself for Hailey getting kidnapped. Maybe if he was still working here, it would have been him, and he was okay with that. He wished it was him instead of Hailey. He was taken out of his thoughts by a soft knock on the locker, causing him to turn around to see Kevin. "Hey man," Kevin said, giving him a nod. "Hey," Rome said softly "you okay?" Kevin asked, although he already knew the answer. "No, but I will be," Rome said as his phone rang, making him look at the contacts, then turning his phone off and putting his phone into his pocket. Rome looked at Kevin.
"It's my handler trying to reach me, but I'm not going to answer until I know Hailey is safe," Rome said. "It's not your fault," Kevin said, leaning against the wall. Rome scoffed at that, not believing him. "That should have been me, not her; Lee is mine, and Jay CI," Rome said, standing up angrily. "If I didn't have to go undercover, I would still be here working in this unit, and Hailey would've been here and okay." Rome yelled, and Kevin knows he is not yelling at him; he is angry and worried, as everyone was. "It's not your fault," Kevin said softly, causing Rome to look at Kevin, but before he could say anything, Dante walked in with Hank behind him. "We've got something One of them popped at a traffic cam two blocks from an abandoned motel. He used to work there.” dante say as all four of them walk down the hallway
“The place is empty?” Hank asked “Set for demo in two weeks. She's gotta be there.” dante said as they walked into the bullpen Kim handed Rome his jacket and they set off.
~~~
The team gets to the motel, all getting out of their cars and jogging towards the motel. Rome, Hank, and Dante stopped at door number six while Kevin ran to another door. "Go!" Hank said into his radio. "Copy," Kim said, causing Adam to kick the door. "Chicago PD!" Hank yelled as he kicked the door open. All three of them stormed in to see no one until they reached the bathroom.
"Body!" Hank yelled, causing Rome to rush in, but let out a relief breath when he saw it was not Hailey Dante rush in. "It's Lee." Dante said when he saw who it was. Hank crouches down, examining everything. "Where the hell is she?" Dante whispered. Rome looked at the body; some caught his eye in the blood. "Home" was written in it. "Home!" Rome said, rushing out of the motel room. "She's taking them home," Hank said, standing up and leaving the bathroom with Dante behind him. "Get a BOLO out of Mark's other vehicle. Let's go!" Hank spoke into his radio as he left the motel room.
~~~’
Rome and Hank were sitting in Hank's car in front of the apartment building. "All right, everybody stay low. We got anything?" Hank asked into his radio "The back is clear," Kevin said, looking around. "All clear on the east end." Adam said "All right, just stay back. Stay hidden We’re going in." Hank reported to the team as he and Rome stepped out of the car, looking around, pulling down their jackets, hiding their guns and badges, and walking over the railing towards the apartment.
~~~
Hailey in a truck has her hand tied up behind her back and tape over her mouth she bends her knees toward her face getting her hand from behind her back to infront of her she takes the tape from her mouth and brings her hand up the metal bar inside of the trunk rubbing the zip ties on it after a few second the snapped apart. Hailey searches the trunk for a way out
~~~
Rome and Hank walk out of the apartment building. "Does anybody have eyes?" Hank asked into the radio, asking the team. "Still nothing. All clear." Adam responded, shaking his head. "Come on, Hailey, where are you?" Rome whispered to himself. Hank looked at Rome, "They should have been here by now." Hank said, as his other radio went off, "5021, you got your ears on?" the dispatcher asked.
Go for 5021," Hank said as Rome looked up. "Be advised of your BOLO hit. " The camera spotted the vehicle westbound on Fullerton at Ashland two minutes ago." dispatched said, "Copy you." Hank said, "That's only six blocks." Rome said he was picking up his speed. "That's only six blocks out, but they're heading the other direction. Let's go!" Hank said to the radio that his team was rushing to catch up with Rome.
~~~
Hailey feels around the trunk. She presses on a carpet panel. She rips away the edge to see inside the car. Hailey pauses, looking around, before looking down at her sweatpants. She pulls the drawstring from them and wraps it around her knuckles. She pushes the trunk access door down, crawling into the backseat.
There's an entrance to a park about five miles up." Eli said, "It's secluded." Mark said as Hailey fully got out from the trunk, wrapping the string around Mark's throat and choking him, causing Mark to let go of the wheel to the string. They drive off the road into a patch of dirt, barely missing a tree. Eli tries to reach Hailey, causing her to kick him. Mark still has his foot on the gas, making the car go faster. "No! No! No! No! No!" Eli yelled, "See the concrete wall, hailey ducks!" as they hit it.
Eli lays halfway out of the car hood covered in blood as Marl passes out laying on the steering wheel. Hailey stirs awake in the back seat; she crawls half of her body from the trunk, sitting up half way, groaning as she looks at the men unconscious. She reaches for the car handle. She struggles a few times before she finally gets it open. She crawls out of the car on her hands and elbows. She groans as she full-on reaches the ground and starts to crawl but is stopped when Mark pulls her back to the car, flipping her over. He gets on top of her, wrapping her hands around her throat. Haley fights, trying to get him off of her. She turns her head to the right and sees a broken piece of Mark's car. She grabs it and stabs it into Mark's throat, blood splattering on her face as he falls off of her. Hailey coughs as she finally breathes. A cop car pulled up. "Chicago PD! Ma'am, are you OK?" A female police officer yelled, "I'm police!" Haley yelled, still lying on the floor, looking up at the sky.
The team gets there to see Hayley on the floor. Rome jumps out of the car before Hank can stop it. "Hailey!" Rome yelled. Rome reaches Hailey, who crouches down gently, grabbing her hand and saying, "Hailey, can you hear me?" "Rome," Hailey said, closing her eyes.
~~~
Hailey was sitting at the edge of the hospital bed as Rome came in with clean clothes for her to change. "Hey," he said, which made Hailey break out of her thoughts and look at him with a small smile. "Are you sure you want to leave?" Rome asked, handing Hayley her clothes. "Definitely," Hailey said as she stood up, grabbing her pants and pulling them up over her gown. "I'm sorry, Hailey," Rome said, causing Hailey to stop grabbing her shirt. She looked at Rome, confused. "For what?" Hailey asked, confused, as Rome walked closer. "For not being here, I wanted to be here. I really did, but I couldn't. I should have been. This wouldn't have happened if I were just here," Rome said. "It's not your fault," Hailey said, pulling Rome into a hug. Rome hugged her back, kissing her shoulder, and they just stood there.
~~~
Rome took Hayley back to the district and said, "I'll be up in a few; I've got to call my handler." Rome said, leaning against his car. Hailey nodded and walked away. Hank walks into the bullpen to see Hailey sitting at her desk. What are you doing? I thought you were staying at the hospital tonight." Hank asked, "Uh, I had Rome bring me back here." Hailey said, "They didn't want to keep you." Hank asked, "They didn't need to. I'm fine. The team was crowding the hospital, and Rome needed to talk to you, so I just came." Haley said, causing Hank to nod, "Where is he?" Hank asked, looking around, "Outside, talking to the handler, but anything on Jessica?" Hailey asked, causing Hank to shake his head.
"Does the doctor say you're allowed to drink?" Hank asked, putting his finger up and showing a little bit. Hailey smiled, causing Hank to smirk and chuckle as he walked to his office.
Hailey and Hank sit and talk. Hailey rests her head on her hand. "The rest of the evidence we got off of Jessica's WhatsApp. She had multiple accounts. And Lee was hooked on one of them. But that's where they planned it. As far as I can tell, the robbery was her idea. She definitely pushed him to steal the cash. Hank explained, causing Hailee to scoff and shake her head. "Is she admitting to it?" Hayley asked.
hank scoffed "No, she lawyered up." Hank said, "But... I mean, we got her." Hank said, nodding his head. "Lee did it for her." Hailey said "Mm." Hank hummed "He wouldn't give her up, not even to me." Haley said, leaning against her seat, as Rome came upstairs with a sigh, rubbing his face. Hank looked over to see Rome. "Hey, want some?" Hank asked, raising his glass up. "Yes, please." As he reaches them, he leans against Adam's desk. Hank poured some for Rome, handing it to him. "He's mad?" Hailey asked, "Oh, he's pissed." Rome said, taking a sip, "When do you go back?" Hank asked, "I don't," Rome said as he drank the rest in one gulp. "What do you mean?" Hailey asked as Rome put the glass down. "They're coming here to Chicago," Rome said, looking at Hailey and then at Hank.
Headcanons
Pairing: Hailey Upton x Single Father! Former FBI profiler! OC! Kristoff "Kris" Aller
Summary: here
Author's note: these are just some ideas I gathered until I can't come up with the first chapter. I hope you like it
First Stake-out
“You know, you can ask me anything” He seemed comfortable in the passenger’s seat, his voice was serene and low. The night was perfectly still, his slow-moving chest and words being the only proof of life in the whole block. Unlike her, he felt easy, and his breathing was silent and light. His gaze was on the streets, focused but unpreoccupied. Hailey, on the other hand, froze for a second, and her breathing stopped when he suddenly spoke. “It’s easier than following me around, you know.”
She quickly turned to him, and their eyes finally met. Her widened look found his cool expression.
“Why did you do it?”
"I'm uncomfortable with this partnership" Hailey admitted with a sharp voice
"This isn't a partnership." He replied almost immediately. "I'm here for a case. Only one. Then you don't get to see me again."
Hailey sustained their shared gaze — she analyzed his features as he grew unsletted before her light blue eyes.
"I don't think you mean that. Any of it." She stated. " It's useless to ask you anything if you're going to answer with lies."
Kris snorted. "Are you serious?"
"Everything about you seems fake." She argued back "So, yes, I'm serious."
"Hmm." His eyes were burnings hers; his annoyance was clear "Why is that?"
"You have a juvenile record, but almost none reports from the police academy. Several promotions, only compliments, even Platt likes you...On paper, you're a perfect cop, but—"
"I turned it all down." His semblance softened; he shook his head slowly as if her suspicions were perfectly reasonable. "Do you wish to know why?"
For a second, Hailey saw his eyes water, and she was ready to say 'yes' — but Kris turned his face away in reflex. "Someone's here." He whispered, now analyzing the empty streets.
They were not alone.
Context
• At first, Hailey didn't like the idea of Kris becoming her new partner; Technically, he wasn't even suppose to know about the case. For some reason, however, Voight trusted Kris — yet, it didn't mean Hailey would trust him
• "C.I Bishop" that's what Ruzek called him. No long after, Hailey figured out why he had this title: during his patrol days, Kris assigned more C.Is and got confessions for many cases. Suspects would talk to him as if he was a priest in the confessional. No wonder he was selected for the first team of the Special Investigations Unit. Few years later, FBI itself selected him and took him to N.Y
• Voight and Platt treated him with respect and warmth; it was unusual to see Trudy being chatty and asking about his daughters nearly every time Kris passed by; Voight would do the same thing, and worse: many times, he would take Kris to his office for some sort of secretive conversation. Hailey could only watch them
• Adam was willing to be his partner; Torres was making up theories Kris very often agreed with; Voight trusted him completely — and it was clear that Kris wasn't excited about getting a desk for himself. But the Sargent teamed him up with Hailey, and the man occupied Jay's former table with discomfort. They both had to admit, it was awkward
Partnership
• There was something off about him, Hailey could tell. No one could possibly be so balanced, light headed and calm as Kris . No true profiler or police officer could be so easy going while watching and analyzing the most horrible scenes she has ever seen. He looked like a pshyco, staring at the crime scenes and victims with a totally blank face. Another odd thing: he didn't come up with any theories on the first days, even though this was his only job
• He looked, sounded, and behaved like a lie, a fraud. And this case was too important for him to mess everything up. Hailey felt she had no other option: she started to investigate him
• It didn't take long until she figured out: his wife suspiciously passed away four years ago; he left FBI for unknown reasons; he has the guardianship of two girls: Amber, 6, his daughter, and Tessa, 14, his niece. She could find nothing about Tessa's mother. He had brilliant ratings and few complaints. On the paper, he was one of the best police officers Hailey has ever known — who suddenly gave up everything to work at a rehab center. He was either an angel or a demon running from his past
• Another problem: he had a juvenile reccord, which required autorization to be accesed. He came to Chicago when he was 17, and got in trouble just a few days after arriving. The only thing Hailey could discover: Voight took care of his case
A bit more about the plot:
"I have a clue." He spoke out of the sudden as soon as the shift began. His eyes shone with an unsettling energy. "A theory, more precisely." He walked over to the board. "The animal-based accelerator, the abandoned factories and now companies. It's evolving, growing like a story-line." The whole unit looked at Kris with confusion. "I looked up the first arsons again. All the buildings once were public places, hospitals, secretariats, stations and so on." They asked how the companies buildings would fit into that, and he went on "They don't aim at the people, but at what the place symbols. At 3 a.m, they go to old community centers, lock whoever is in up, and set fires to it." Silence again. "Mission-oriented type of serial killers. I'm just missing their manifest." "Why you keep saying them?" The team asked. "It's a group. Probably white, young men, trying to make a statement for the whole town to see." Adam, Kim and Kevin glanced at each other, all of them confused and surprised. Voight, Torres and Upton stared straight at Kris. "I made up a list of possible next targets. They might act tomorrow." Then, without questioning, Voight said "So let's get ready."
Uncle and Niece
Characters: Will Halstead x Daughter!OC, Jay Halstead x Niece!OC, Adam Ruzek, Kelly Severide, Sylvie Brett, Antonio Dawson
Warnings: Nothing
Summary: Everyone is introduced to the uncle and niece duo.
A/N: The ending of this was very rushed because it got really awkward and I didn't want it to get to long. I dont really like this but I am posting this in celebration of me getting my first job!!!!
*****
Jay hummed to himself, idly scrolling through his phone reading some messages while he took the occasional sip of his coffee. He managed to get a full night sleep without getting woken up by someone calling about a crime scene, allowing him to wake up earlier than usual.
Making sure everything was clean and clear, Jay clipped his gun and badge to his belt, slipping on his jacket but before he could open the door on his own accord, his doorbell rung, confusing him as to who would be at his apartment at this time.
With caution, Jay opened to door and was surprised to be met with a frantic looking Will. The doctors hair was a total mess, bags under his eyes, his coat haphazardly put on over his scrubs, his bag just about sitting on his shoulder with his hand clutching a smaller hand.
"I am so sorry but I need a really big favour man." Will said, panting as he just about managed to get all his words out. He looked like hell but his little girl on the other hand, no a single hair of hers was out of place.
Looking back and forth from the father and daughter duo, Jay eventually connected the dots, sighing as he did so. Going through all the possible scenarios in his head as to what the worse would happen if he went forward with this really big favour.
"The daycare at Med isn't open and no one is available to babysit but I had no idea you were working. You know what? Leave it, it's fine, forget I ever asked." Will rambled, only now noticing that Jay was leaving for work.
"Dude, it's fine." Jay shook his head, huffing as though he was hurt at Will trying to leave. "I'll take her to work with me. Everyone will love her and it'll be our first official time hanging out together."
"You sure?" Will replied, apprehensive as he let go of Faith's hand, letting her hold Jay's instead. "I owe you man."
"Nah, it's fine." Jay shook his head again, smiling down at his niece. "We'll have fun at the precinct."
"Alright Faith, be good for Uncle Jay Jay, okay? Make sure he stays out of trouble." Will said, bending down so he was eye level with his daughter. A smile she inherited from him plastered her lips as she bid her goodbyes, pressing a loving kiss on his cheek as she waved him away.
"Bye daddy! I love you too much!" Faith shouted down the hallway, watching Will hurry into the elevator, not wanting to be late. "I love you!"
"I love you too baby!" Will shouted in reply, enthusiastically reciprocating her wave which totally contrasted his completely messed up appearance.
With the elevator doors closing, Jay and Faith were left alone for the first time in both their lives. Looking down at the three year old, the three year old craning her neck to look up at her thirty something uncle, she gave him a toothy grin sending this weird feeling in Jay's gut. All of a sudden, he felt this strong urge to protect this little being with all his livelihood no matter what the universe sent this way. It was weird.
"Okay, let's go to work."
*****
For the entire car ride, without being prompted to, Faith was rambling on about anything that came to mind and Jay was intently listening even though he struggled to make out a few words. Faith spoke about her toys, her amazing father and how excited she was now that she was three since it was her birthday a month before Will suddenly showed up in Chicago.
With her much smaller hand in his, it was weird as to how something so small could exist but it was a miracle it could, the uncle and niece duo walked into the 21st precinct. Jay patiently held her hand at all times as she took one step at a time, the steps were much bigger than the normal ones she was used to but she denied any of his help.
Before Jay could make a clean escape, making a dash towards the metal gates, he was stopped by a very familiar voice causing him to come to a halt, screwing his eyes shut at the impending doom he was about to face.
"Chuckles, what do you have here?" Trudy projected, her hands on her hips when she noticed the tiny human being accompanying one of her detectives.
"Sargent, this is my brothers daughter Faith. Remember Will? The doctor?" Jay replied apprehensively, crossing his fingers he wouldn't get reemed in the middle of the district.
"Sure, anyways, Faith is an amazing name for such an adorable girl." Trudy, shrugged it off, leaning over the desk as she started gushing over the toddler. "I see your uncle missed out on those beautiful red locks, disappointing really."
Faith smiled, giggling despite not understanding what Trudy meant but Jay did and he felt slightly offended. "Okayy and that's enough for one day, we'll be upstairs if you need us sarge."
"It's time to say bye now Faith. Say bye Trudy!"
"Bye Bye!" Faith smiled, waving at the older woman who unbeknownst to her had become the most amazing person in the three year olds eyes.
*****
Whoever came up into intelligence, their footsteps could be heard against the wood flooring, allowing all the detectives to know who was coming up based on the force or speed but this was confusing.
There was definitely more than one person, one being bigger than the other but both going at the same slow pace. No one was able to make out who it was till they made an appearance.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, Jay and Faith made it to the top of the staircase and were in the bullpen. For Jay, it was nothing amazing and he was here everyday, it was basically his second home but for Faith, it was both scary but amazing.
"Woah! Who's incredibly adorable kid did you kidnap?" Adam teased, a smirk on his face, being the first to notice the little girl that no one knew. Getting up from his spinning chair, he set down his coffee and leaned against his desk to get a better look at the duo.
"Jay, you never told us you had a daughter." Erin said accusingly, also smirking as she joined in the teasing. She was slightly shocked but easily hid it along with her confusion and slight irritation.
"Her name is Faith and she's my niece." Jay said with some pride, introducing Faith to all his colleagues. "My brother put me on babysitting today, so I expect all of you to be on your best behaviour."
"Sir yes sir." Adam's smirk didn't falter, walking towards the pair, bending down so he could offer his hand. "It's lovely to meet you Faith, I'm Adam."
"Hi." Faith replied, taking his hand confidently but she didn't move, simply holding it. She smiled at him, flashing a toothy grin in his direction. "Are you a superhero like Jay Jay too?"
"Indeed I am, aren't you smart?" Adam said rhetorically, pushing himself up so everyone else could talk to you. "We're gonna get along great."
"So Adam's already introduced himself." Jay rolled his eyes, pointing at Adam who stood proudly with his hands in his pocket. "This is Antonio, Erin, Al and my boss is Hank. They're all detectives like me."
At his last five words, Faith's whiskey coloured eyes automatically brightened and everyone noticed. She shuffled on her feet, her eyes sparkling in wonder as she looked at them all.
"Hey, you wanna hear a funny story about your uncle cause I've got too many." Antonio spoke up, smiling at the widening smile on the three-year-olds face at the mention of stories. Without a second thought, her hand was out of Jay's grasp and she walked straight to the Latino who picked her up, sitting her on his desk.
Besides Hank and Al, Antonio had the most and probably best experience with children and it definitely showed.
With a soft smile, Jay watched as the senior detective divuldged into a most likely embarrassing story before he walked away, slipping past Erin and moving towards Hank who he had much to explain to.
*****
Thanking all the forces in power today, Jay's brows scrunched in confusion at the purple hair tie that had somehow ended up around his fingers, a cute plastic flower cheaply glued to the front of it.
Throughout the day, Faith had been given a tour of the bullpen and even had the chance of manning the front desk with Trudy when intelligence went out.
It was just after lunch and Faith had woken up from a very good nap, the painless indentations on her face proving such. But, her hair had gotten completely messed up and Jay was now stuck.
Faith giggled at the confusion painting her uncles face, the adorable sounds washing away any of the impatience Jay just had. It was crazy how the toddler made him feel, even though she wasn't his own child.
"You know what, you look great Faith." Jay shrugged, tucking her red curls behind her ears, patting down the uncontrolled frizz all around before picking her out of her carseat and gently setting her on the ground.
For the billionth time today, Faith found herself in awe of the firehouse. She had only ever seen them in her cartoons and despite her excitement, she could feel the nervousness bubbling in her stomach at how big everything was in real life.
As if sensing her miniscule amount of anxiety, Jay scooped the toddler into his arms dramatically and walked up the apron and into the firehouse where he could see squad sitting at their table.
Jay's sudden action shocked her, sending butterflies in her stomach as she shrieked, laughter easily following suit when he wouldn't set her down despite her poor pleas.
The sound of childish laughter interrupted any conversation happening at the squad table, all their heads turning to find the source and to say they were confused was the least they could say.
"Hey man, you good? Whose baby did you kidnap?" Kelly asked, getting up from his chair, giving the detective a typical bro hug while minding the toddler perched on his hip.
"You remember my brother right, he's a doctor at med." Jay said, continuing when the lieutenant nodded. "This is his daughter Faith. Faith, this is one of my friends Kelly, he's a firefighter. Can you say hi?"
"Why do you have a girls name if your a boy?"
Her innocent question shocked them all. Jay's eyes went wide as he stared at his niece, Kelly was a mix between laughter and shellshock while the three squad members immediately began laughing.
"Faith, I what-"
"Oh my gosh! Who is this beauty?" Sylvie said, preening at the sight of the girl as she exited the ambulance. "She looks exactly like the new doctor at Med you know. Oh yeah, did you know that he has the same surname as you Jay, crazy."
"That's my brother Sylvie and this is his daughter Faith." Jay replied with ease, a smile on his face at the rambling paramedic.
Before she could address the fact that he had a brother, she frowned as she cast eyes on Faith's unruly hair.
"Does she have a hair tie?"
"Yeah, it's here, why?"
"Give her here."
And with that, the blonde paramedic disappeared into the firehouse with his niece and her cheap hair tie gone from his wrist.
"Boden's waiting for you inside his office Jay."
"Oh yes! I actually have work to do. Thanks severide."
Beyond the Badges
The ongoing series based on "Hank Voight and the Crackhead Detective." Co-Authored by @creativeimagination206 and @andgry4, with included drawings by @andgry4.
If you haven't read "Hank Voight and the Crackhead Detective," now is the time to jump into this series from the beginning - Follow Hank, Trudy, Al and their misadventures from their academy and beat days. Then, see how their lives intertwine with that of Katelyn Meyers, leading up to the story that started it all, as well as the fate of these characters after that story ends. :)
Find the full AO3 synopsis and link below the cut:
The universe around the story that started it all - "Hank Voight and the Crackhead Detective."
This universe will dive into headcanon of the "three shits" [Trudy Platt, Henry Voight, Alvin Olinsky] and their early (mis)adventures together. Their past intertwines closely with that of the original "crackhead detective," Katelyn Meyers.
Katelyn herself has her own story to tell - how she came to be the "crackhead detective" and why it's so important to her that she sticks with Trudy, Hank and Al, even after the "torture" is over. She is found in all sorts of situations, both before and after the original story. She falls in love with Adam Ruzek and the two create a life together, despite hardships that are thrown their way.
This story is a comprehensive timeline of the lives of these characters, but not only that, it is a story of hope, that your life can be something more than what is written in the stars. Your life isn't defined by the cards you're dealt - it's how you play those cards that matters the most.
On the brink | Part 4
Masterlist
When a case hits too close to home, is Jay able to keep it together or is he going to lose everything.
Summary: With Lily in the hospital because of Jay, the team has to wrap up the case without the two partners. But the most important question is, are they able to overcome this disaster?
Trigger Warnings: OCC, OC Lilian Grace Harper, asthma, past child abuse, protective Intelligence, Jay fucks up his friendship, canon divergence!
Word Count: 2.4k +
A/N: Here is the next chapter of my first Chicago PD fic, thanks for reading. This is more on the slower side but don't be afraid there's some more drama on the way :) thanks for reading
Will has to keep his rage in check after Ruzek told him what had happened earlier. He can't believe that his brother hurt the only woman who was always by his side, no matter what. She caught him after his bad heartbreak with Erin, she helped him during some bad episode of PTSD, she's his best friend and she could have been so much more, but he fucked up, royally. He has to help his brother to fix the broken pieces of this friendship but when he enters the treatment room and looks at Lily, shaking and absolutely broken in the hospital bed he doesn't know if they will be able to fix this ever.
With cautious steps to not startle the strawberry blonde further he draws closer until he takes a seat beside the bed.
"Hey, Lils. You're okay. Everything is going to be okay." Will grabs her hands and gives her a gentle squeeze.
"Will…" A heartbreaking sob is leaving her mouth. "I couldn't help him. I- I should've have tried harder…"
But the red haired doctor interrupts his friend immediately. "Lily, look at me, please. There's nothing you could've done. We both know Jay. He's a stubborn asshole. HE should be the one apologizing to you. He hurt you physically and I'm probably right when I assume that he also hurt you mentally the last weeks."
"But…" Lily tries to intervene.
Will stands up from his position on the uncomfortable hospital chair to sit down beside the shaking woman on the bed, gathering her smaller frame into his chest.
"No buts, Lily. He's to blame. I know he's your best friend and you would do everything to protect him, but this is on him. But we will fix this, HE will fix this. You're going to be okay."
---
The car ride to the young woman's house was quiet. With her raging headache and aching lungs she tries to concentrate on her breathing. Adam on the other hand occasionally casts worried glances in her direction. He doesn't want to leave her alone after being injured, with a concussion and after her bad asthma attack but he's needed at the precinct, with her and Jay down, cause Voight sent him home.
"Sunshine? Please stop worrying. We got the prick, it's over." Adam reassures her. At least they can close the case, the Jay-problem is the only thing they have to work out and Adam will move heaven and hell to get the two back on track. Out of the corner of his eyes he can see her nodding tiredly.
"I talked to Voight, you're off for the next days. Will is going to check on you later or tomorrow. But please call one of us if you're getting worse. Our doc wasn't too keen to discharge you that early."
A nod is all he gets from the woman beside him. Lily is clearly under shock. Not that she got injured in the line of work, she misses her partner. She needs Jay's closeness and she can't help it, she blames herself for the outcome of this whole dilemma. That's what she is, always protective of the people she is close with, blaming herself for their mistakes. She's the best cop in their unit, Adam thinks and softly strokes her left hand which limply laying in her lap.
"We gonna be okay, sunshine!"
---
The silence in her house is so loud with all the thoughts running in her concussed head. Memories of her childhood, insults of the guys in her old unit, happy moments with Intelligence, cuddly Sundays with Jay, everything is morphing into a painful chaos raging inside her brain.
Curled into a small ball on her couch she's staring into space when a loud knock is bringing her out of her thoughts. She doesn't want to open the door. She doesn't want to see anyone. Why can't they just leave her alone like everyone did in her past? She closes her eyes to shut the world out. But another round of knocks now louder are echoing through her silent living room. Lily pulls the blanket over her face, not ready to face another human being.
---
What has he done? He destroyed everything. The only person on this earth despite his brother who is family for him is hurt because of him. Lily is hurt and he doesn't even know how she is doing. How severe her injuries are. Is she still at the hospital? Is she alone at home or is Adam still with her? Jay fists his light brown hair into his hands when he hears keys jiggling in the lock and his front door slowly being opened. He looks up from his bent forward position on his couch. There are only two people who have a spare key to his apartment and one of the two is probably still in the ER because of him.
"Thought you wouldn't open the door if I would've knocked. Got something to eat for us." Will announces as he enters his brother's living room, taking off his thick coat and boots before making his way over to the brunette detective. Jay doesn't answer the red haired man, he sure as hell knows what happened today. Maybe even treated his partner in the ER.
"Cat got your tongue?" Will says as he lets himself plop down beside his brother.
"What do you want, Will? I got a shitty day and want to be alone" Jay replies annoyed not in the mood for the shit his brother is probably going to give him.
After Will finished his shift at Med he thought about going straight to Lilian but he wanted to talk to his brother first, after all Adam messaged him that the young female detective is safe and sound at home and resting, so he wanted to give her a bit more time to let the whole situation sink in and maybe sleep off her shock.
On the way to Jay's house he had to downscale his rage against his brother. He understands that this case hit too close to home for him. Ruzek told him a bit about the last days and that today was just the sad peak. He needs to talk some sense into him, Jay needs to fix this and that fast.
"Yes I know. That's why I'm here. Lily has a minor concussion, had to glue a laceration on the back of her head. She had a bad asthma attack but Ruzek was able to help her administer her spray at the scene before bringing her to Med."
Will saying his partner's name makes Jay immediately looking up. She has a concussion because of him? She even had an asthma attack because of his previous actions. Despite the huge tension in the last days he noticed that she looked sick. He knows the signs and under normal circumstances he would've forced her to take a break, but he was in his own head for too long. The dead veterans were more important than his partner, his best friend, the woman he loves.
"Is she still at Med?" The brunette man asks with a shaky breath.
"No. She wanted to go home. I was not happy to let her go, her lungs didn't sound as clear as I like them to be, but she insisted. Adam took her home, texted me a while ago that she's resting." Will tells Jay while showing him the message of the other detective.
"Jay, Ruzek told me. Are you fucking out of your mind? Lily is the best that ever happened to you. I thought…" But the redhead can't continue his speech when the man beside him suddenly jumps up and starts to pace in front of the coffee table.
"You think I don't know that?" Jay shouts at the older man who's patiently sitting on the couch. He knows what he did and he hates himself for that and not only for what happened today. His behavior the last days is disgusting him now. When Lily only wanted to help, to cheer him up and be there for him, what did he do? He pushed her away both figuratively and literally.
"Jay, stop it. JAY!" Now it is Will’s turn to shout at his brother. As much as he is pissed at the other man he is also there to calm him down and help him to face his demons. Jay stops pacing and for the first time since Will's unannounced arrival he looks at his brother, a tear slipping down his cheek.
The red haired doctor pulls the detective into a tight hug. "It's gonna be okay, man. You'll fix this. WE are going to fix this. But first of all, let us eat, before the take out gets even colder. Then we gonna talk about a plan how to fix this mess."
"IF I can fix this." Jay breathes in defeat.
"Look at me." Will grabs his brother's shoulders in a tight but not painful grip. "Lily loves you, you know that. She blames herself more than she blames you. She needs you just as much as you need her."
Jay needs some seconds to respond. After he dropped his gaze he now looks his older brother deep into his warm brown eyes. "That's the problem, Will. She is way too good to be true…"
---
"I know that you're at home, Lilian. Open the door or I will kick it down." The raspy voice of her sergeant can't be ignored that easily and Lily knows he will keep his threat and destroy her front door if she won't open it in the next seconds.
On shaky legs and a heavy head she makes her way to her front door. The cool air hitting her when she's greeted by a worried looking Hank Voight. In an attempt to make him some room she takes a step back but a wave of dizziness is hitting her hard. Two strong hands immediately grab her forearms to steady her swaying body.
"You good, kid?" Voight rasps in a soothing voice. After shutting her door with a thud he leads his youngest detective to her couch where she camped out the last hour.
"Lilian, you good?" He repeats his question clearly growing more worried each passing second the woman in front of him is not talking to him.
"Hank… Yeah, sorry. Just a bit dizzy. Got a tiny little concussion. Nothing too serious." She looks up at the older man crouching in front of her still holding her steady with her arms in his gentle grasp.
"I should've killed Halstead…" He mumbles as he makes his way over to the kitchen to fetch a glass of water for Lily.
She didn't know how thirsty she was until the cool liquid hit her tongue.
"Why did they discharge you when you're clearly not fit?" Voight asks rather annoyed as he takes a place beside Lily on the couch.
"I insisted, I wanted to be home, Hank. Will - Dr. Halstead is going to check on me." The strawberry blonde answers in great hope she can convince the older man that she's not as bad injured as he might think.
"Halstead? So now we're trusting that other Halstead guy when his brother is the reason for you being at Med in the first place?" Hank said in an annoyed slightly aggressive tone.
"No, no, no. It's my fault…" But her attempt to defend her partner is interrupted by a violent coughing fit. The urge to cough takes her by surprise causing her to bend over slightly in her seated place on the couch. She can feel her sergeant's worried eyes glaring into her hunched over form.
"Easy, kiddo. Do you need your spray?" The Intelligence Sergeant asks ready to jump up into action.
Lily shakes her head no and tries to calm down her painfully fast breaths. When she's calm enough to form a coherent sentence the young woman looks up at her boss beside her in an attempt to get the elephant out of the room. "How's Jay? You need my statement, don't you?"
Of course his first reason to drive to the house of his female detective was to check on her and see for himself that she's doing okay after being discharged. But he also needs her statement of the incident. He needs to know how he should handle the whole situation. He could suspend Halstead for his stunt, have his badge, let him go on patrol for the next weeks. But he wants to talk to Harper first.
"It - it was an accident. I slipped, that’s what will stand in the report." Lily looks up from her trembling hands in her lap. "I don't want Jay to get into trouble. I guess you already had his ass, back at the station."
"Lilian, he crossed a boarder. In my unit, we look out for each other. He didn't have your back. He hurt you…" The older man knew beforehand how Lily wants to handle this. Her protectiveness over people she's close with is nearly indestructible.
"Yes, he hurt me. But he's my partner, my friend. The closest thing I have, had to a family. Even if this is not going to work out anymore, I don't want to destroy his career. Please Hank." Her eyes are filled with unshed tears, the whole situation slowly sinking in. Will they fix their work and private relationship? A long time ago she vowed to herself that she will never be a victim of abuse again. But it was just the difficult case they had, Jay would never hurt her.
She feels Voight's hands on her shoulder squeezing slightly giving a bit comfort in that confusing situation. Her head starts to pound painfully and her glazed over eyes are the last straw for the sergeant to know that he needs to leave his young detective.
"Rest, kiddo. We can talk in the next days. Call if you need anything."
When she's finally alone again the adrenaline wore off, her whole body starts to ache and the cold is back in her bones. Too weak to make her way to her bedroom she lays down on her couch, snuggling into the soft cushions and into the thick blanket her partner gave her for her birthday last year.
DANTE TORRES | PAGE FOUR — (snippet)
A/N: it’s rare for me to drop a snippet since I like to do the element of surprise and release it all at once but I guess the inspiration came on back some + the show is finally coming back on Wednesday! Had a little free time to write during this rainy gloomy spring day so i wanted to give a little teaser of what’s to come whenever I do write the next chapter in full! Enjoy 💛
<- don’t get a paper cut on page three here.
+ series masterlist can be found here.
𓇢𓆸𓇢𓆸𓇢𓆸𓇢𓆸𓇢𓆸𓇢𓆸𓇢𓆸𓇢𓆸𓇢𓆸𓇢𓆸
The thud of Dante’s heart is in sync with the ringing that takes over the sound in his left ear. There’s something warm and wet that touches the side of his neck. He’s been knocked over onto his back into the street, there’s gravel and rocks that’s digging beneath his buzzed hair. His eyes fight against the smoke and dirt that’s present in the air and it doesn’t take him long to start moving, followed by a deep groan that his body protests.
“Dante.” It’s muffled but it comes from his right as hands latch onto the sleeves of his jacket.
His body aches and he’s sure there’s a cut on the back of his pulsating head, he blinks hard focusing in on a bruised Atwater who’s helping him to his feet.
There’s a twing of something at the sight of the older man…anger maybe? However the throbbing in his body overshadows that in this very moment.
“Hey, hey. You good?” Atwater checks Dante, steadying him, while his eyes scan over his team member.
Quickly Dante coughs into his opposite wrist, a tickle in his throat by the mucus mixed with something metallic. It’s stuck in his throat and he’s grateful nothing is present on his sleeve, deciding to just clear his throat a few times and manages to give a nod to Atwater but even that motion feels heavy. He can’t hear what else Kevin is saying to him but there’s a pull to bring his eyes to search through the smoke towards the city hall building.
Where he was once standing much closer to.
His breathing hitches, taking a moment to pick up on the sound of multiple car alarms going off after the explosion. Through the dust of fog it appears as if they all stepped into some apocalyptic scene and it’s anything short of a pleasant sight. He moves to step towards the damaged building and Kevin follows him, his hand almost tightening and not leaving Dante’s jacket as he moves with him. Dante’s eyes are in slits as he waits for the smoke to clear more, trying to get a better look at the destruction.
“Torres, Atwater come in. What’s your status?” Voight’s gruff tone crackles over the walkie.
Kevin does the honors since it’s taking Dante a little longer to figure out what just happened. “Sarg. Torres and I still located north of the building. We’re good, banged up, but good.”
Last Dante remembered was Voight and Ruzek were taking the back of the twelve story building, whereas Burgess and Cook were inside taking floor four and six. A frown now appears in between Dante’s brows as another crackle came through both of their walkies.
“Burgess here.” Kim announced, “I can confirm that the explosion occurred on floor five…taking all of the floors below down with it. I’m hurt…but able to move. There’s at least two fatalities that I’ve counted but any other civilians I find, I will proceed with an escape route—if possible.”
Dante shares a look with Kevin, already aware that this didn’t feel over and can only imagine how Adam was feeling.
“Copy.” Voight answers first on his end.
It’s not long beyond the blurring car alarms that the fire truck sirens can be heard in the distance. Dante feels the urge to get closer to the building, the cloud in his brain is fighting hard for him to remember who else is missing.
The next crackle stops Dante in his tracks, “…This is Cook, located on floor six. I have eyes on where the explosion occurred. There is minor damage to one section of floor six, no casualties.”
Adam is the one who manages to respond to this, yet it is evident that his voice is slightly shaky.
A minute goes by until Dante feels a familar buzz in his back pocket. His response is slightly delayed but he pulls his phone from his pocket, “Torres.”
“Dante!”
It’s Peter.
“There’s a second set of chemical weapons in the basement of the city hall county building!” Peter’s information is rapid on the other line, “Bayo was found deceased on the south end of the building. Catherine reported that she witnessed Reid shoot and then push Bayo out of the window. Bayo also fired his gun at the same time and set off the explosion on the fifth floor. We believe Reid has connections to TSF as well.”
Dante exhales, “…Where are you now?”
“In the basement.” Peter states as if it’s obvious, “I want to make this clear: Reid is not working alone.”
It comes back to Dante in pieces: his disagreement with Seraphina going into the building to confront Camila, him snatching the vest from Adam to strap Seraphina into the bulletproof protection to Reid pulling him aside to share his last words of reassurance to Dante…that Reid would be with Seraphina every step of the way.
Which was far from comforting with that man’s crooked dimpled smile.
“…where’s Nina?”
“Dante…she was on the fifth floor with Reid.” Peter reminds, his tone empathic.
Dante doesn’t feel the phone slip from his non-bleeding ear but he does feel his blood run cold. His chest is tight, the back of his neck burns, and the environment in front of him feels as if he’s on a merry-go-round. He stumbles back but thankfully Kevin was there to catch him.
“Whoa, hey! What’s happening, Dante?”
Voight’s voice comes back into the walkie, “Be on the lookout for Camila. Cook says she last saw her fleeing—
It was as if the polluted air guided Dante’s jaw towards the right, his eyes tightening as he panted trying to find his breath but he ends up finding much more.
A silhouette that he knows is the prime suspect.
The adrenaline that arrives is much more powerful than anything else that his entire being wants to feel.
Dante doesn’t want to think the worst so he buries it.
His instincts say it’s Camila Cartagena so he snatches himself from Kevin’s grasp and begins to move towards the figure that’s a great distance from them all.
“Hey!” He calls out and clears the tickle in his throat away, watching as her head snaps up. Her long dark hair is whipping in the air and it’s clear that there’s fear in her frame.
Kevin is frowning, hand waving the remaining smoke out of the way to see what his team member got his eyes on.
‘I’ll be damned.’ He thinks to himself.
Dante’s hand goes to his waist band as he starts charging over the debris, being careful not to trip as he calls out one last time, “Chicago PD! Hands in the air, Camila!”
Which only invokes her to set off into a run, which is more of a gallop as it appears that she’s also injured and Dante doesn’t hesistate to run right after her.
She caused this and Dante had no problem doing what he had to do.
Atwater is not too far behind the buzzed haired officer, calling it into Voight on the walkie while he also chases after the two.
It has been proven that it was going to be a crazy shift but lately…it’s just any other day with the intelligence unit.
Something they’ve all been built for.
Whatever It Takes¹
Hailey Upton x Upton! Brother Oc
Summary: With JJ uncle being in trouble with a gang. His uncle Tom asked for help with getting the money. With JJ working for the gang giving Tom more time to get the money. What he didn't know was Hailey and her unit were looking into the gang and her uncle.
JJ walked into his uncle Tom's house and asked, "Uncle T, are you here?" JJ called out after a few seconds, "Out back," and Tom called, leading JJ to walk outside to the backyard. When he got there, Uncle T was cutting up some wood. "Want a beer?" Tom asked, walking to the cooler. "Uh, yeah, sure," JJ said, taking the beer from Tom. JJ looked up at Tom to see that he had a black eye. "What the hell happened?" JJ asked, setting the beer down on the table. "I got into some trouble; nothing to worry about," Tom said with a shrug. JJ is rolling his eyes. "With who this time?" JJ asked, crossing his arms. "Mason Davis," Tom said, causing JJ to throw his hands in the air. "Mason Davis out of everyone," JJ said, taking his hands and rubbing his face.
Mason Davis was a low-life drug dealer and probably did a lot of other things. "I needed to score," Tom said, which made JJ scowl. "You were clean," JJ said, getting angry now. "How much?" JJ asked, looking at Tom. "5k," Tom said, "damn it, uncle T, how many times have you visited him?" "A few times, but I didn't have enough, so we made a deal, but I'm late on it," Tom said. "I need your help," Tom said, making JJ think about it before nodding. "Yeah, yeah, whatever it takes," JJ said, causing Tom to smile.
3 months later
Hank walked up the stairs to see everyone but Kevin. Hank walks next to the board. "Alright, are we getting anywhere on Mason Davis?" Hank asked, pointing to the picture of Mason Davis, which was next to five people which he had killed. The team knew that Mason had killed them. They all had the same brand tattoo on them. Everyone shakes their heads as Jay's phone rings. He gets up and walks out of the bullpen. Hank looks at Adam, who has been undercover with Mason and his gang for a week. "You got anything?" Hank asked. Adam shook his head. "No, he seems pretty close to the kid and has him under his wing," Adam said, leaning back in his chair. "You've got a name?" Hank asked before Adam could say anything. Jay walked back in and said, "Another one died." Jay said with a sigh, sitting on Hailey's desk. Hank nodded with a sigh, looking at Adam to see if he could answer his question.
"He goes by JJ and can't be older than 17." Adam said, "Any records or social media?" Kim asked, "He has no record or social media." Adam said, looking at Kim. "First name, last name?" Jay asked, "I heard someone call him Justin." Adam said, and Hailey turned to look at Adam. "If we find out who that kid is, we can flip him," Jay said as Kevin walked in. "I've got a location; one of my CIs saw the logo," Kevin said as he gave a sticky note to Hank. "Alright, let's go," Hank said, making everyone grab the jackets.
Hailey grabbed her phone, going to her photos. "Adam, wait," Hailey called out, making Adam stop and turn to her. "Is this what Justin looks like?" Hailey asked, showing a picture of her and JJ; they were both smiling in the picture. Adam looked at the picture for a second, noting that Justin looked a little younger, but nodded his head, making Hailey sigh. "You know him?" Adam asked as Hailey put her phone in her pocket. "He's my little brother," Hailey said, walking away, leaving Adam behind, who had an unreadable look.
15 minutes later
The unit arrived at the house beside Adam, and Hailey and Jay went to the back while the others went to the front door. "Chicago PD?" Adam shouted, breaking the door down and making everyone run. A hooded figure ran toward the back. "You've got one heading out," Kim radioed to Hailey and Jay. The hooded figure got outside and ran past Jay and Hailey. They both ran after the figure. "Police, stop running!" Hailey yelled. The figure hopped over the fence to get tackled by Kevin. "Get up," Kevin said, lifting the figure up and taking his hood off, showing JJ. Hayley saw JJ, "Damn it, JJ," Hailey said, making JJ look at her as well as Jay and Kevin. Haley let out a sigh, not wanting to believe his brother could be in a situation like this.
40 minutes later
Hailey was in the viewing room with Hank and Jay. "So he's your brother?" Hank asked, causing Hayley to nod. "Yeah," Hayley said as all three left the viewing room. "He's a good kid, Sarge," Hayley said as they reached the bullpen, where the others were. "What do we know about the kid?" Hank asked, "We got his school transcript; he was a straight A student until two months ago." Kim said, handing one file to Hailey and another to Hank. "Yeah, he started failing his class and quit the football team. We talked to the teachers, and they said he hasn't been showing up," Kevin said. Hailey rubbed her eyes and sighed. Hank nodded. "Okay, Jay Hailey, go talk to him," Hank said, causing both of them to nod.
JJ was sitting on the bench with his face in his hand. 'Don't say anything, or your uncle is dead,' Mason said to him before he ran. JJ heard the door open, not looking up, not wanting to see his sister's face with disappointment written on it. "JJ," Hailey said softly. JJ still didn't look "I can't, Hailey," JJ said, his voice cracking, looking up at Hailey, who was giving him a sad look. When JJ saw Jay, he tensed up, which they both noticed when he stood up. Jay sighed, putting the picture down on the table. "We have six dead," Jay said, which made JJ roll his eyes. Before he could say anything, Platt walked in with Hailey and JJ behind him. "Let's go, Justin," Tom said, looking at JJ before he turned his eyes to Hailey, not saying anything. Tom grabbed JJ's arm, taking both of them out of the room and out of the station. Hailey looked at Jay before following.
"Did you say anything?" Tom asked as they stopped in front of his truck, "No, I didn't." JJ said, "Don't lie." Tom said, "I'm not." JJ said, not believing him, and Tom pushed him hard into the car. "No, I didn't." JJ said, "Don't lie." Tom said, "I'm not." JJ said, not believing him, and Tom pushed him hard into the car. JJ looked at Tom with fear in his eyes as Haley rushed over, pushing her uncle away from JJ. "What the hell did you bring him into?" Hailey asked angrily, "This is none of your business." Tom said, getting in Hailey's face and clenching his jaw. JJ watched in fear, not wanting his sister to get hurt. "Uncle T, let's just go," JJ said, his voice sounding a bit scared. Tom, not taking his eyes off Tom, nodded and walked away, opening his door and getting in. Hailey looked forward for a few seconds before turning around to look at JJ. "I'm sorry," JJ whispered, turning around and getting into the car. Hailey got out of the way and watched them drive away. After a few minutes, Hailey turns around and heads back inside to join the others.
20 Questions for Fic Writers
Thanks for the tag @huntingingoodwill ! 🥰
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
None … I’ve never used that platform
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
None … because I’ve not posted any stories on that platform.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Peaky Blinders
4. Top 5 fics by kudos (I’ve also went but tumblr notes…since I’m not on ao3)
And I’ve got too many fics to check through, so I can’t give 5, but I know for sure that my top viewed fic is The Brother That Always Wins by a lot.
5. Do you respond to comments?
Absolutely yes. Receiving and responding to comments is one of my favorite parts of being a writer.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
It’s probably The Reckoning. … I’m not sure if the ending is angsty, but the fic most certainly is.
7. What’s a fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Oh my there’s too many to choose from … fluff’s my favorite thing to write.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
No, thank goodness. I think I’d leave/stop writing if I did … of course, I’ve gotten some comments disagreeing with what characters have done, but I wouldn’t consider those to be hate.
9. Do you write smut?
Nope.
10. Craziest crossover?
I don’t think I’ve written a crossover … but I have had ideas of possibly mixing 1923 with Peaky Blinders - idk where I’d even start with that, but the idea of having (Y/N) be with both Spencer Dutton and Tommy Shelby was (and still is) super tempting lol
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
No (not that I know of, at least).
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No, but I have had people ask in the past.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No…but I’m most certainly had some help on my fics from several of my amazing mutuals on here.
14. All time favorite ship?
Kim Burgess x Adam Ruzek on Chicago PD - if anything happens to them I’m done with that show.
15. What’s a fic you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I originally had grand plans for Birmingham, but they withered away as engagement dwindled … I don’t think I’ll ever pick it up again.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think I’m pretty good at writing dialogue … and fluff probably too.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
World building definitely - I feel like I struggle with descriptions of things … and also writing dialogue without dialogue tags to it.
18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
Oh 100% use it if it fits the situation!
19. First fandom you wrote in?
I think it was for Big Time Rush 🙈
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
That’s a hard one. Maybe I’d say my OC series To Be Alone because it’s what got me into this beautiful fandom.
