Best records 2022 - part two

So, in the latest episode of De Algemene Verwarring, #84, I mentioned that I put a list of what I think are the best records of 2023 on my personal Facebook page, and that is a bit of a pity for Facebook users that are not connected with me and even more for non-Facebook users, as someone pointed out. Some listeners are curious, but honestly, if you’re a regular listener of the show you should probably be familiar with most of these. And it won’t surprise many of you that there are quite some Swedish records in there. So, here we go. 5 to 1.

5.The Shifters - Open Vault (Adagio830) - The Shifters didn’t release anything new since 2020, and this compilation of demos, live tracks and home recordings was already put online on their Bandcamp page in that same year on one of those Bandcamp Fridays, I downloaded it back then and have been waiting for a vinyl release ever since.  Really hoping on actual new material from this band in 2023. I wanted to post the track The New Bleached Fuhrer, but I can only find the full album on the youtubes, so here it is.

4. Myriam Gendron - Ma Délire, Songs of Love, Lost and Found (Les Album Claus) - I was completely blown away by the track “C’est Dans Les Vieux Pays” when I first heard it on the Dynamite Hemorrhage podcast. Here’s another track that I really really love and like to singalong to.

3. Luster - Luster (Morc Records) - There are not a lot of bands where I tolerate the flute as an instrument. Luster is one of the bands I tolerate. Amazing record by this six-piece of Belgian experimental music scene stars, folk and shoegaze and drone.

2. Treasury Of Puppies - Mitt Stora Nu (Discreet Music) - the difficult second album from the Göteborg duo. Everyone likes their debut better. I don’t. Brilliant album.

1. Amateur Hour - Krökta Tankar Och Brända Vanor (Appetite) - this is the third studio album from the Swedish trio of Dan Johansson (Sewer Election Neutral, Enhet För Fri Musik Heinz Hopf,...), Hugo Randulv (Enhet För Fri Musik, Skiftande Enheter, Typical Girls) and Julia Bjernelind (Typical Girls), and not everyone think it’s their best one, but I do. This ideal mix between pop music, shoegaze, Cocteau Twins era goth music, and noise makes Amateur Hour a unique band and one that combines the best of all worlds that I like. Posting the track here with the best title of the year, 15 minutes of sheer beauty.

KINDLING No Generation LP + MONTPLAISIR S/t LP

Discrètement, avec autant d’amour que d’assiduité, mon pote Julien Paget, via son label Echo Canyon, construit une oeuvre discographique aussi passionnante que cohérente en enchaînant des sorties se voulant le reflet de ses goûts en constante évolution, d’un émo hurlé habité à un rock plus mature et posé. 

KINDLING regroupe en son sein un ex-FOREIGN OBJECTS (Andrew Farr) ainsi que deux boulimiques de la scène skramz (Andy Kelly et Stephen Pierce, ex-AMPERE / THE LAST FORTY SECONDS / RITUAL MESS / WOLVES / MONTCALM / AEROSOLS... Ca va, les mecs ?), rassemblés autour d’une douce chanteuse appelée Gretchen (à l’image de cette jeune Allemande blonde comme les blés dont j’étais tombé amoureux lors de mes vacances en Crète, il y a 27 ans de ça). Le quatuor ainsi formé balance six nouveaux titres sur ce joli maxi rose, faisant suite à un album assez solide (et bleu) sorti l’année dernière chez No Idea. Aucun surprise pour qui y aura déjà jeté une oreille, c’est toujours de l’excellente pop sonique et planante, shoegaze dans la production, indie dans la composition. La galette tournant en 45 tours, ça file excessivement droit au but. Même pas le temps de te remettre de ces émotions vocales que le disque est déjà terminé. Du coup, tu le repasses. En boucle. Tout le contraire de ceux des PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART, si tu vois ce que je veux dire.

MONPLAISIR, en revanche, y’a quelque chose de moins immédiat. Moins pop. Mais ça m’accroche carrément plus l’oreille sur le long terme. Je comprends que Julien ait eu envie de presser cette démo dans un format plus approprié en la découvrant. On y retrouve Pierre, guitariste-chanteur-pieuvre chez ONZE et ONE OPTION OCTOPUS, ainsi que des membres de SPORT et STONEFISH. Si je ne connais pas ces derniers, l’évocation des trois noms précédents devrait suffire à te mettre l’eau à la bouche. Tirant son patronyme d’un quartier branché pour jeunes dynamiques lyonnais, le groupe va pêcher les bulles de sa musique à la source de la triangulaire noisy-rock new-yorkaise, ie le SONIC YOUTH de Daydream Nation, Experimental Jet Set, Trash & No Star et Rather Ripped (Restless, Crystal Palace). On retrouve également de discrètes influences 90′s à la CHOKEBORE dans la mélancolie de certains passages, des riffs que n’auraient pas reniés les math-rockers déviants de ROCKETS RED GLARE et ROADSIDE MONUMENT ainsi que des ambiances proches de la musique prog-post-rock moderne (au hasard, le Mélasse de KITTY EMPIRE, mais bon faut vraiment que j’arrête avec ce disque). Au final, MONPLAISIR me procure ce même sentiment de plénitude et d’extase que lorsque j’écoute ce putain de groupe dont je n’arrive plus à me rappeler du nom, bien que j’ai présentement toutes ses chansons qui se bousculent clairement dans ma tête (je sais pas si ça t’arrive souvent... Moi ça me le fait tout le temps et ça me rend fou).

Bref, en attendant que ça me revienne : juste écoute ce disque.

CYLS 43: Perfect Future "Old Wounds: Warmth in the Winter of 1914-1915" Release date: 4/21/2012 Format: 12" Vinyl/Digital Pressing Info: 100 Black 150 Tan 250 White Co-release with ADAGIO830 & Sea of Tranquility Records I think one of the most interesting aspects of Perfect Future that not nearly enough people talked about was how political they were. How many other bands wrote political records that were involved in the Emo Revival? I'm trying to think and I'm honestly coming up blank. That side of Brendan really shows his off early hardcore roots- a genre that really put a message in their music. I think that maybe it's more prominent to me now in the current political climate. Perfect Future took this step a further. I mean, this album is literally a concept album about the horrors of World War I. How many bands wrote political records about World War I, regardless of genre? That's a question I would have to research, but I'm guessing it's a pretty small amount. Old Wounds was designed to be a collaborative effort, heavy on guest appearances from their friends- and boy did they deliverer on that concept. This album featured vocal contributions from @twoknights, @warrenfranklinmusic, The Ground is Lava, The Island of Misfit Toys, and @eeiwale. Some bands added more than vocals. The following bands added guitars, vocals, etc. Sleep Bellum Sonno, PULLING TEETH, The birds are spies, They report to the trees, Wits End, The Christmas Lights, Symbiosis, Dogjaw, and Jon Felton and his Soulmobile. This was also their new guitarist Ted's first record and that line-up would end up lasting until Perfect Future's final show. This was the third Perfect Future release on CYLS. I remember coming through Frostburg, MD and Brendan showing me the album and getting me to record a guest vocal part.
