For the whole Penguins of Persona thing, I could be these being the POM villains and Persona Main Antagonists for each one Dr. Blowhole and the Strega Group for P3 Officer X and Tohru Adachi Savio and Shido
and you already got one on with Dave and Maruki
Thanks for sharing this! Truth be told, I haven't thought about that at all (for now I'm thinking about how to combine so the au any makes sense). I'm not sure if I'll use it, but I'll remember that :3
Also I made a Dr. Blowhole Persona 3 sketch from that, I needed to

I find myself wanting to write more about the Echo x Adastra x Persona idea. And while we're at it... what about adding more?
I'm separating the whole casts into 4 categories:
Phantom Thieves: The Phantom Thieves sans Violet, Crow, Sophie, and Wolf, and the main Adastra cast. Amicus is a bit hesitant about allying with thieves, even if they're good people all around, while Marco being Marco has not let his rebellious streak die down at all the past 8 years. Alexios is given weird looks as the group gets to know each other, especially once he awakens to his fighter-masquerading-as-a-Navigator Persona. Everyone else is just trying their best to acclimate to the new world, with varying results. Their part of the plot revolves around taking down the Palace-like distortions wherever rumors start to amass.
Investigation Team: The Investigation Team + Marie, all on their lonesome. While one team may be better suited to traveling the Metaverse and the other terrifying at dispatching Shadows, the Inaba crew have a god and Shadow Self experience. Even during the slowest apocalypse ever, people continue to be horrible and even try to spin the situation into their advantage, which inevitably backfires as their own Shadows creep up on them. It's their job to help these fools face themselves while tracking down who - or what - is causing the fusion in the first place.
Shadow Operatives: The Shadow Operatives old and new, and the main Echo cast. With the latter group's more intense familiarity with one half of the overarching forces attacking the Persona world, they take a more passive role protecting the common folk from upsurges of rumor-stirred hysteria panics and the Shadow leaks that follow. Aigis in particular is interested in Flynn, since she is more fine-tuned to time distortions (because robot, and who wants a repeat Abyss of Time am I right?) and can feel something very weird from him whenever he uses his Persona.
Hikari Studios: Hikari, Sho Minazuki, Labrys, Adachi, Akechi, Sumire, Maruki, Zenkichi, Sophia, Ichinose, Toshiro, Guernica, Jose, the important route side characters of Echo sans the ghosts, Bjarni, Brunis, and Magis from Interea, and the main cast of Socially Awkward (haha surprised you didn't i?!). Jose's van has become rather large as he comes into his own as one who governs power! And with some hasty modifications to Maruki and Zenkichi's rides as the cognitive dimension starts to fuse more drastically with the real world, Hikari leads a behind-the-scenes B squad against the smaller but no less dangerous threats across the land, with only the fragmented memories of Q2 and her determined heart to lead the unlikely group! Hijinks naturally ensure as the side Echo and SA crews share notes between their worlds and become increasingly concerned for this group's mental health with 6 (former) antagonists among their number.

Okay for @bobbinoknows
So pretty much all the adachi ships looked like this
Tumblr media
With the acception of Adachi x Izunami
Tumblr media
Sae and Tae:
Tumblr media
Maruki and Kawakami (my dearly detested, I don't think I've mentioned it before but I'm indifferent to Maruki on the best of days and Kawakami is an attack on site predator)
Tumblr media
Tae and Kawakami
Tumblr media
Mitsuru and her wife Yukari <33
Tumblr media
So no shade to anyone who ships the protags, you guys enjoy some of the stuff from it is super funny and the art is always stunning, that one comic about Yu, Minato and Ren from the dancing game where the older two try to be the best at flirting in hilarious but personally I read them as brothers and their weird murder sister so both Joker and Yu and Joker and FeMC look the same
Tumblr media
Iwai x Dojima
Tumblr media
Rise x Naoto
Tumblr media
I wanna elaborate a lil extra because they are really cute, but the idea of Naoto and Kanji being together, Yu and Yosuke, and Chie and Yukiko all being together and Rise like 0.0 is really, really funny to me.
Alice x Ann (my girl Ann deserves better than a predator, the way Alice talked about Joker gave me the ick)
Tumblr media
Thank you, this was a lot of fun!

Megaten wiki update.
Working on making pages atm, even tho they are just stubs.
P4MC’s page is (for the most part) formatted how MC’s need to be formatted. FeMC is next.
IT each have their own stubs and gallery stub. Feel free to have at it there. (Galleries I’m trying to format them as Games, Mangas, Animes, Stage Plays/Live Action, Special Events, Other, They aren’t fully labeled how I’d like but that is the rough order they are in atm)
Persona x Detective has a stub created
I’m going to try to expand as much as I can on Souji (and other stubs of P4MC tabs), P4 manga, Femc, and then P3 manga.
If anyone has any special interest stub they want created so they can expand on it, just comment or shoot me an ask and I’ll get the ball rolling (or if someone knows how to make the stub they can go for it obvie)
Researching on the best way to deal with spoilers. Mostly in concerns with Naoto (gender reveal, cause that is a spoiler), Adachi, Izanami, Goro, Sumi, Maruki, Ikutsuki, Ryoji, Yaldy/Igor, (and Teddie?). I’m trying to figure out what’s the best course of action. A warning? Is there a way to have a spoiler page and then a non spoiler page? (ex: if it’s  non spoiler, Naoto is referred to as male, but then in the spoiler page it changes to female pronouns. Or the best way to deal with the Kasumi/Sumire situation....) However, below is my idea to make it so the wiki is friendly with people who don’t want to be spoiled (see below for my rough)
Ideas for Spoilers (subjected to change):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So as you can see, there is a non twist spoiler page, you’ll write it as if you believe she’s Kasumi, up until the twist. Then if you click on spoilers, it becomes Sumire, and if you want the real Kasumi, then you click on the other tab (or can return to the fake version).
I’m not sure if this is the best way to go about it, but I want to try to save people from being spoiled on the first page like people were complaining about with Sumi when P5R first released on the other wiki.

More Notes:
The 'Wild Cards' in this just have really good partnership/Resonance abilities with everyone in their groups, so they can work with any of the Weapons in their groups (and even outside of them a lot of times... looking at Ren and Loki for an example. xP) uncannily naturally.
The Navis in this are all Witches, but good-natured ones, and use their magic to support their respective groups/help make the world a better place. For example, Futaba would probably be able to 'hack' souls somehow with her magic, and also her reclusiveness in this would be at least in part due to being terrified of people finding out her true nature as a Witch. I'm not sure how welcomed/persecuted/the general climate of Witches are/is in this AU yet though.
The Arisato twins and Ryoji are all children of Death in this, with Ryoji being the older sibling and the twins being twins. Death is still Death like he is in SE-OG in this AU, more or less.
Ryoji and Aigis tend to float between Minato and Minako as their secondary partners, though Aigis tends to stick more to Minato as his primary partner and much less often swaps to Minako, while Ryoji shifts between his two siblings more frequently. Yukari swaps about as much as the rest of SEES's Weapons do among their Wild Cards, which is more or less situationally or for fun. Despite this, Aigis and Ryoji still don't get along particularly well with one another, only putting up with each other for their Meisters' sakes.
Strega did exist in this, though I'm not sure yet what their aim was, or the fate of its members. At the very least, they were some kind of rogue antagonist group, and Takaya used to be the Meister of both Jin and Chidori. Chidori ends up defecting to DWMA though, or whatever organization Junpei is a part of.
Aigis, maybe Ryoji?, Mitsuru, Labrys, and Minazuki are all Weapons that can fight without Meisters. Loki and/or Robin Hood might also be among them? I'm undecided.
Originally, I was considering having the cast have their Personas as their Weapon-partners, and just have them have personalities based off of their Shadow-selves' but more aligned with their accepted-selves, but I decided against it in the end. Akechi gets to be the exception, because he's Akechi.
Speaking of Akechi-- Robin and Loki are very powerful Weapons in this AU. Loki's 'chaos magic' would become an incredibly chaotic/maddening soul-wavelength that most others wouldn't be able to handle contact with on its own, as well as perhaps some Madness magic or abilities of some kind? Robin's soul meanwhile would be much calmer and help to counteract/cover-up Loki's from those who can sense souls, as well as perhaps provide some tactical abilities; I'm undecided on that for now. I'm not sure who's side Akechi would be on in this AU yet, like if he was being manipulated by a Shido-like person or not, and for what reason if so.
As for Robin and Loki's personalities and appearances in this... Well, the latter would be somewhat similar to their Persona forms probably, including some of the less-human traits given OG-SE characters (*stares intensely at Excalibur*), and the former would also be somewhat based off of those, as well as sort of how Akechi acts in relation to both of his 'masks'? So Robin tends to be calmer and more polite, though he still possesses a small amount of vengeful desire or bloodlust, whilst Loki is a lot more chaotic, hot-blooded, and very vengeful/aggressive. Both share a tendency towards showiness however, and sometimes get in small competitions with one another to up the other to impress their Meister or be the better Weapon among themselves (since they both might think already that they're superior to other Weapons in general? Unsure).
Also speaking of manipulated and abused children, Sho and Minazuki, alongside Ikutsuki, more or less replace Crona, Ragnarok, and Medusa in this. Not fully 1-for-1 however. Ikutsuki is very much a human, albeit a Mad or power-hungry one (still kinda looking to create a Kishin or otherwise bring about some kind of catastrophic destruction), and Minazuki is a separate Weapon, as opposed to how Ragnarok is Crona's Black Blood. Minazuki and Sho might be twins however, just with one a human/Meister and the other a Weapon. They look almost identical physically in this AU, even down to haircuts, but Minazuki lacks the iconic X-ish shaped face scarring that Sho possesses (and overall the two have a different patterning of scars across their bodies), and Sho's irises appear to be more gray while Minazuki's appear to be more blue. Weapon-form-wise, Minazuki looks like Sho's OG katanas, just in different colors and as a singular blade rather than a pair.
Ikutsuki is still forcing Sho and Minazuki to become stronger in similar methods to Medusa in some ways however, such as going out and obtaining/consuming great amounts of human (and maybe even Witch) souls.
Sho's a little less messed-up than Crona is, due to Minazuki being supportive of and dedicated to him as opposed to bullying him into submission like Ragnarok does to Crona. That being said however, I don't yet know why Minazuki hasn't yet defected from Ikutsuki. P: Other than that, Minazuki is kind of like Sho's impulse control and logical reasoning at times, due to being able to control when he transforms into his Weapon form and thus deny Sho access to his weaponry in times where he's being reckless or unreasonable. Soul-wavelengths-wise, too, Minazuki's soul just in general helps to keep Sho's soul/wavelength more stable probably?
Also in terms of replacing SE cast and plots; The IT replaces Maka et al for the sake of the main story most likely, with SEES being their upperclassmen or alumni and the PT being their underclassmen, if they even attend DWMA at this point anyways.
Lotsa dead people in OG are alive in this AU; Minato, Minako, and Ryoji, Shinjiro, Kasumi, etc.
Speaking of Kasumi; she fights kind of like Sumire does in Royal, that being making use of their gymnastics and priorly-athletic builds. Both sisters are gymnists in this still.
Alternatively, Sho and Minazuki's situations almost ended up reversed, leaving a highly impulsive/aggressive Weapon-Sho and a Meister-Minazuki who would have the kinda backwards idealology of trying to protect his Weapon partner in times where it would be best left to the Weapon to defend their Meister, but also really good at getting Sho to focus when wielding him as a weapon/in resonance (and can in general reign him in to some degree while others can't), making them an exceedingly deadly duo. I kind of prefer Minazuki as the Weapon however, as fun as the reverse could be, as it gives Ikutsuki a bit more leverage over Sho's situation I think? Also in that vein, it would make a lot of sense, given OG, for Minazuki to be more like a Black Blood entity like Ragnarok; however, I like Minazuki being able to have his own body in this, so that can be left for another AU perhaps. xP
Ikutsuki would infiltrate/be trusted by the DWMA in this AU at first, like Medusa was, but eventually get outed for his true intentions most likely. He might be a teacher or other kind of faculty rather than a nurse however?
Maruki meanwhile gets to play the role of school nurse in this. He's not a few screws loose like his Royal counterpart is though, he's just a humble nurse. However, he does still have his interest in researching dangerous subjects, though I haven't yet decided if that would be magic, Witches, Madness, Kishins, or what. It could potentially put him in knowing-contact with the Navis, if they aren't already known to be Witches by the DWMA anyways.
I'm not yet sure on what to do with Adachi or Nyx yet. Nyx might be some kind of Madness-related catastrophe, power, or individual perhaps however?
Rei and Zen are probably just civilians in this. Zen just happens to be really devoted to protecting/looking after(?) Rei still. xD
I'm undecided on if Marie should be amnesiac about her Witchhood or if she should be more like Izanami-no-Mikoto from OG in this.
Yusuke is still obsessed with artistry and beauty in this, so you can imagine what he's like as a Meister. He is still capable as a fighter and dependable when needed... more or less, but is also still easily distracted by, and places higher priority on, such things.
Ryuji kinda gets the short end of the stick because I didn't particularly know who to pair him with or what really to do with him at the moment. Mishima's a big tentative as his partner as a result of that, though I think it could prove to be an interesting relationship potentially.
I'm hoping to add more SL/Confidant and secondary/tertiary/background cast peeps eventually into various roles, but I'd need to do more refreshing/research on them first. I also haven't decided on if I should include Metis in this or not.
If the SE info is inaccurate, it's because I haven't seen the anime or read-up on it in like years. I might do clarifying/fact-checking research some day, but for now, nah. xP

persona users and their arcanas
i compiled a list of all confirmed persona users (p1-p5s) and sorted them by arcana out of curiosity to see where most of the users are. the list goes in order starting with fool and ends with the unnumbered arcanas, and i believe i got every user we see, but i could definitely have missed a minor character or two.
some notes: - fool, magician, lovers, and fortune are tied for highest amount of users. temperance is the least with no users. - the only attendant that was counted was elizabeth due to her confirmed wildcard status in p4a2, which slots her as a persona user on level with aigis and other protagonists. - i tried to list any major discrepancies between arcanas. mainly, aigis (for having 3 different confirmed ones across wildcard, persona, and slink), akihiko and shinjiro (persona and slink), and adachi (arcana switches midway through). - arcanas that share numbers were merged, like magician/councillor and strength/hunger. - reverse persona users are also noted - sho is not a persona user, so he was not listed. minazuki is. labrys and shadow labrys are also separate entries for the same reason.

For Day 2 of @personararepairweek, I was planning on writing a Coffee Shop AU fic, but it’s not done yet, so I thought I could share an excerpt of my Adaruki Angel/Demon AU in the meantime. This is an excerpt from a WIP; I’ll post the entire fic on AO3 once it’s finished :)
Hope you enjoy!
#
Maruki heaved a sigh, basking in the warmth of the last ray of light as the sun sunk in the horizon. He really wished Adachi could be by his side to experience it with him…
As of today, it had been seventy years since Adachi left.
It had been seventy years since Adachi suddenly up and left, without a warning, without an explanation, and without saying goodbye, leaving Maruki all on his own.
Maruki hadn’t been there when it happened. He had been away on a solo assignment that required his full, undivided attention. It was only when he got back when he was informed that Adachi had been expelled from Heaven, much to his shock, so he had to put the pieces of the story together by himself to try to find out what had happened to the loyal, well-intentioned Adachi he thought he knew.
The other angels warned him that Adachi was a lost cause, that any attempt to reason with him now was a fruitless pursuit, and that he had strutted out of Heaven, with a smirk on his face, without any regard for anyone else’s feelings. He had quickly built a successful “career” as a demon -- way more successful than his “career” as a guardian angel ever was -- and he had even amassed a reputation for being ruthless, having a short temper, and doing whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. Lust, wrath, pride, sloth, gluttony, greed… you name it. If it was condemned in the Bible, Adachi was probably guilty of it.
Most said that it had been lust that had finally made Adachi snap, since it had been an act of lust that got him officially barred out of Heaven.
Some argued that what, from an outsider’s perspective, seemed like raw lust was, in fact, Adachi acting out of wrath in a way that could be misconstrued as sexual desire.
Others said that it was a combination of the two. Narukami, for one, was convinced that the act of lust that got Adachi banned from Heaven had been but the culmination of the wrath, sloth, and pride that had been festering under the surface for a much longer time.
Maruki didn’t know for sure. Maruki had never noticed any of that.
And he was supposed to be Adachi’s right hand man.
How pathetic.
To be fair, though, Maruki wasn’t sure who to blame for this turn of events. Should he blame Adachi, for giving in to temptation? Or should he blame himself, for failing to notice that something was wrong with his longtime partner and not doing anything to help him?
In any case, Maruki was determined to find out. He had been dutifully showing up at the Samegawa day after day ever since he learned of Adachi’s departure, hoping to run into him again and get some kind of closure. Of course, he wasn’t eager to see him, not after he had basically spat on everything Maruki believed in and then proceeded to ruin the life of countless innocent mortals for fun, but he needed to know where he had gone wrong. Was there anything he could’ve done to save Adachi from the path he’d chosen? Or was it completely out of his hands?
Maruki wanted to think that it wasn’t. He wanted to believe that he could’ve helped Adachi in some way or another, because he would much prefer to be careless rather than useless.
A swooshing sound jolted Maruki out of his thoughts. A sudden gust of wind ruffled his hair and feathers, sending a chill down his spine, and a pull of negative energy made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on edge.
Every fiber in this body screamed at him to run away. He could sense the danger right behind him, but he fought his instincts and looked over his shoulder to locate the source of the disruption.
It was a demon.
More specifically, it was Adachi. As a demon.
Maruki stared in shock, blinking in quick succession, convinced that this must be a trick or some sort of hallucination.
This couldn’t be real. This couldn’t be Adachi. It was impossible.
He just…
He couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
Black, skin-tight pants.
A bloodied jacket that reached Adachi’s knees.
His wings, once white and pristine like pearls, were now charcoal black.
A pair of horns protruded from Adachi’s messy brown hair, curling into themselves on either side of his head. They were pitch black, darker than his wings, and they contrasted with his hair in a way that made it look a shade lighter than it actually was.
A tail. Adachi had a tail. Long, smooth, and black, with a pointy end. It gracefully swung from left to right while he walked, just like a cat’s tail. The movement looked natural, almost involuntary. It was hard to tell, but Maruki reckoned that, if held upright, it’d probably be long enough to reach Adachi’s head.
Maruki could barely recognize him in his current state. But, really, what surprised him the most wasn’t how much Adachi had changed, but how much it seemed to fit him. In a way, Adachi played the textbook demon much better than he ever played the part of the flawless angel. His white robes had always seemed three sizes too big, the color palette didn’t match his dark hair and eyes, and the overly bright halo never seemed to want to stay in place, like it was never meant to be worn on Adachi’s head to begin with.
It was obvious, in hindsight. As an angel, Adachi had never been comfortable in his own skin.
But, as a demon…
A smirk creeped onto Adachi’s face. “Like what you see?”
Maruki swallowed around the lump in his throat. Adachi was here, Adachi was truly here, so close to him that he could reach out to touch him, and all he could manage was a choked mumble of “A-Adachi…?”
He slowly stood from the ground, trying to resist the urge to run towards Adachi and wrap his arms around him, while, at the same time, fighting the urge to escape while he could. He gave the demon a once-over, but no matter how much he told himself that this couldn’t be happening, he knew that it was all as real as it could be.
“Yup! It’s the same old Adachi!” He grinned. “Did ya miss me?”
“What…?” Maruki averted his eyes, ashamed of himself but unable to lie. “Of course I missed you. I’ve been waiting for you, as a matter of fact.”
“I know. Why else would you be wandering around this shithole?”
Adachi sauntered past Maruki and towards the riverbank, slipping his hands into his jacket pockets without a care in the world. His glowing golden eyes scanned his surroundings, with a condescending expression, as if revisiting a stage in his life that he’d gotten over a long time ago, looking down on anyone who was still stuck there. It was clear that he didn’t see Inaba with the same nostalgia-tinted lenses as Maruki.
Maruki stared at the demon, unsure of where to start. There were hundreds of things he wanted to tell Adachi, thousands of questions he needed to ask him, and a myriad of emotions that clouded his judgement every time he took a peek at Adachi’s face. Nostalgia, heartbreak, betrayal... emotions that he had barely ever felt before and which he couldn’t even begin to understand, all meshed into a single ache on his chest that hit harder when he saw how lightly Adachi was taking this whole situation. The most prominent feeling was probably anger, but he couldn’t dwell on it too long in fear of giving in to wrath.
Maruki breathed in sharply, even though he didn’t need to breathe at all, and swallowed his raging emotions.
All feelings other than happiness were dangerous. He had to keep that in mind.
“Adachi. I…” He paused, trying to make sense of the jumble of words inside his head. “I’ll be upfront with you. I’ve already been informed of the things you did while I was gone, and I’ve come to some conclusions of my own, but I am willing to give you a chance to explain yourself.”
Adachi scoffed wryly. “What’s there to explain? I made one tiny mistake, everyone got up in arms, and the man upstairs kicked me out of Heaven as punishment. It’s that simple.”
“What you did was no tiny mistake. Your actions were absolutely repulsive!”
“Geez…” Adachi stared at Maruki, weirded out by his uncharacteristically stern expression. “What crawled up your ass and died? It’s not like I caused a genocide or anything.”
Maruki bit his lip to stop himself from saying something he would regret. He really needed to calm down… He had to remember that he was walking on eggshells, trying to communicate with a demon who might fly off the handle at any given moment. Even though he really wanted to give Adachi a piece of his mind, he couldn’t afford to do anything that would upset him and cause him to turn away from him, not after he had waited so long for an opportunity like this.
“Maybe not,” He said, “But what you did was still unforgivable.”

And thus, today marks the day you sold your soul for a snack. Or Maruki’s smile. You’re not sure which one it is.
So, here’s another one of my self-indulgent Persona AUs! This one has actually been on my mind since I finished playing Royal. That’s a lot of time for four drawings and an unfinished fic in my drafts, so I’m really excited about finally being able to share these!
Of course, I used the DDLC chibis as base, so I can’t claim full credit, but I’m very proud of these came out. I hope you like them too!

[Cheat Code to Happiness AU]
This is completely unfunny, but I like the dynamic between these two and I’m happy with how the drawings turned out, so... Adatakurumi love triangle, anyone?

Let’s pretend that this meeting is possible, okay? Maruki actualized the cops guarding Namatame’s room or something. Please just roll with it.
#
Inaba Municipal Hospital had become like a second home to Takuto Maruki, who was, by this point, almost as well-acquainted with the barren rooms of ashen walls as the hospitalized patients themselves. Whether he liked or not (he didn’t), the chilly air, the smell of antiseptic, and the pitiful glances that other visitors shot his way before rushing down the hall had all become a regular part of his routine, so much so that, in a strange, morbid way, stepping into the building felt like coming back home; a home that filled him with dread and tied his stomach into knots, but home nonetheless.
It had been a couple of years since he had stopped visiting this place on the regular, but he had made up for it over the last couple of weeks, as he had showed up almost every day since Nanako’s return. There was not much to do there other than hinder the doctors’ work, but Maruki found an unlikely source of comfort in pacing feverishly down the busy halls, wondering if he should enter Namatame’s room or not, turning the question over and over in his head until he got tired and decided to go home. There was nothing he could do to help Nanako, her father, or even Namatame, but some sort of primal instinct urged him to be there, to be ready to spring into action just in case something happened. Just in case.
His little visits never amounted to much, but there was nowhere else he would rather be, not while Namatame was hospitalized, so he filled his afternoons with long sessions of standing around, watching nurses come and go, seeing visitors pass by on their way in and out, and averting his eyes from patients because he simply couldn’t take any more pain or he would break down for good.
He had already lost count of how many times he had seen Dojima being led away by nurses, with defeat burned into his eyes; of how many times he’d been stopped by Adachi, who was too agitated to greet Maruki and instead jumped directly to asking if he’d seen Dojima around; of how many times he’d been startled by Narukami, who stood outside of Nanako’s room as still as a statue, only having enough energy to force a lifeless smile upon seeing him.
As of today, Nanako had been hospitalized for fourteen days.
And it was only now that Maruki had finally worked up the courage to enter Namatame’s room and confront the man who had started it all.
Maruki closed the door with a soft click, taking some time to consider his next steps, and sunk his hands into his pockets. He turned around to see an image that had long since been ingrained in his memory; the person he loved, sitting alone on a hospital cot, in a too-white hospital gown, staring forward with dead, empty eyes, with a horrified expression on their face.
It was, all of a sudden, November of 2010 and February of 2008 at once.
Maruki sucked in a breath and clawed into his arm, urging his brain to latch onto the here and now, to take him back to the present and focus only on what was happening around him. Here and now.
November 20th, 2010.
In the hospital.
With a murderer.
The room was cold like a fridge, suffocating like a furnace, and Namatame’s ragged breathing was the only sound that filled the room. For once, Maruki would’ve far preferred silence.
He took a few tentative steps forward, crossing the way-too-large room and making his way towards the only bed in the room that was occupied. He kept his guard up, his shoulders tense, and his gaze sharp, as the scrawny figure on the bed shook uncontrollably, clutching the covers with a trembling hand. Wide grey eyes tracked every single one of Maruki’s movements, flickering as if had a chainsaw in his hands.
He might as well had.
Maruki’s steps were slow and light like a cat’s as he approached the criminal in question. He came close but not too close, but Namatame jerked back regardless, clutching the covers up to his face with a pitiful whimper. “T-Takuto...”
Maruki tugged at his collar, swallowing around the knot in his throat. He stared down, fiddling with his fingers -- a nervous habit that Namatame had likely caught onto during their many outings over the past few months.
Once he had torn his gaze away from his hands, he took in a sharp breath and glared at Namatame through narrowed eyes. His voice came out in a hiss. “How could you.”
“I… I…” Namatame croaked. “I’m sorry...”
Had Maruki been told five months ago that this was the same Namatame who was known for being charismatic and full of drive, he would’ve been shocked, maybe even terrified, at the sight in front of him, and he would’ve hurried to the man’s side, frantically calling for an ambulance. This Namatame looked thirty years older, three times more skittish, and thrice as fragile, like he would break if Maruki were to poke him. If he hadn’t known better, he would’ve thought that Namatame had been overtaken by a terminal illness, that this old man was laying on his deathbed, putting all of his effort into confessing his final regrets.
It was almost hard to believe that this was the same man who had killed two women in cold blood and hung their corpses upside down for everyone to see. Almost.
“What were you thinking?” Maruki said. “Have you seen all of the pain you’ve caused Nanako-chan and her family?! Taro, she’s only six. Who will take responsibility if something happens to her?”
“N-no, please, I didn’t…!” Namatame cried, his tone desperate and barely comprehensible. “I didn’t mean to harm her, I swear!”
How someone could snatch a six year old from her house and expect her not to get hurt or traumatized was beyond Maruki’s comprehension.
Taking in a deep breath, he looked away, slowly shaking his head, and let out another sigh.
“I don’t know if I should trust your words anymore...” He muttered.
Maruki could’ve very well been the only moron in Inaba to still believe in Namatame, aside from the sad sack’s own parents. In a town where no one dared to approach him and instead chose to talk behind his back, spreading rumors about his relationship with his wife and his affair with Mayumi, Maruki had not only been one of the few who had been willing to give Namatame the benefit of the doubt, but the only one who actively seeked him out to give him his condolences and offer him a helping hand.
Since he had heard about his rock solid alibi, Maruki didn’t suspect Namatame for Mayumi’s murder, so he pitied the man for the rough treatment that the town was giving him during such a hard time in his life. While Maruki didn’t approve of his adultery, it wasn’t hard to realize that he was little more than a broken man who was unhappy with his marriage and had seeked comfort in a woman who did love him, only to be unjustly torn away from her and blamed for the tragedy.
Even if Namatame was sunk in such a state of depression that he could barely eat or sleep or, at times, even function at all, he had always been adamant about wanting to find the murderer and bring them to justice, not for sake of clearing his name but of finding some closure. And, although he had first approached Namatame out of selflessness, Maruki couldn’t deny that he had also found solace in the delivery man's presence, as he was the only one in this town who could truly understand what he was going through and commiserate with him for the murder for Rumi’s parents and their subsequent breakup.
Finding out that Namatame had been the one responsible for Mayumi’s death all along was nothing short of a betrayal. It was absolutely revolting to think that, over the past few months, Maruki had unknowingly been hanging out with the same kind of repugnant human being that had slaughtered Rumi’s parents in front of her eyes… And having to confront the fact that he had shared his vulnerabilities with a child kidnapper and a murderer, no less, while said man easily tricked him into trusting him by pretending to agree with his morals, shattered the little illusion of companionship that he had desperately clung onto during the past few months to try and relieve the sting of isolation.
But, right now, Namatame wasn’t acting much like the murderer or child kidnapper that Maruki had been expecting, much less like a manipulator who would’ve willingly deceived a grieving man just because he could.
Honestly, the sight was just… sad.
It was hard to gather the strength to kick this man while he was down.
“Takuto, please! I-It’s true!” Namatame cried, tears welling up in his eyes. “I had no idea I was putting them in such danger...! I was too much of a coward to try and find out for myself…”
Maruki tore his gaze away, mentally cursing at himself. If Namatame began crying, that might be the last straw that would cause him to break into sobs too, despite how hard he had been trying to keep himself from falling apart over these past couple of weeks. While this wouldn’t be the first time he let his defenses down around Namatame, like he had done time and time again when he invited him over to his house, where they would drink in an attempt to drown their sorrows only to end up near passed out in each other’s arms, his perception of Namatame was already skewed enough due to his involvement with him, so he didn’t need any more reason to feel bad for him.
Maruki couldn’t allow himself to feel pity for a murderer of all things. God, he didn’t even want to do this in the first place. He didn’t want to be here, he wanted to be anywhere but here, he wanted to be away, far, far away, and forget all about Namatame and about Nanako and about the murders, forget all about Inaba and pretend none of it ever happened. Be alone. In silence. Peaceful at last, without having to worry about Rumi, his patients, his students. Or about anything at all.
Maruki dug his nails into his wrist, squeezing his eyes shut. He sucked in another breath.
November 20th, 2010.
In the hospital.
With a murderer.
Murderer.
Somehow, the title didn’t stick.
While there was no doubt that Namatame had been the one who kidnapped Nanako and caused her to be hospitalized, the image of Namatame grabbing Mayumi, killing her, and hanging her body upside down in the dead of the night completely clashed with the idea of Namatame that Maruki had had until now. In fact, he had never even thought that Namatame would be capable of murder, let alone that of his lover.
Maruki had been witness to Namatame’s love for Mayumi, which was true love if Maruki had ever seen anything like it. Although he had only gotten close to Namatame after Mayumi’s death, it was easy to see how much he cared about her, how much of his happiness had been ripped away from him along with Mayumi’s life, and how hard he wished he could give everything he had in exchange for her wellbeing. It was very noble of him, even if he practically worshipped the ground she walked on, and it was evident that he would’ve never laid a hand on his dear Mayumi, no matter what. In fact, he wouldn’t have let anyone cause her harm if he could’ve helped it -- he had no reason to do a 180 at the last minute and kill her in a fit of rage.
But this was a child kidnapper. Maruki wouldn’t put it past him to pull a 180 in a fit of rage and kill the one he supposedly loved.
“Takuto, please…! I would never do something so atrocious! Please… please, Takuto… I was trying to save her!”
“Save her?” Maruki echoed somberly. “Nanako-chan…? You were the one who caused her pain. What were you trying to save her from?”
“F-From the one who did such terrible things to Mayumi!” Namatame’s breath hitched. “I… I couldn’t let a little girl suffer that cruel fate...”
Even now, this criminal still spoke like the Namatame that Maruki thought he knew…
Up until Nanako’s kidnapping, it had been obvious to Maruki that Namatame cared much more about Mayumi’s safety than his own, so much so that he would’ve gladly taken her place up on the antenna to protect her. In fact, he would’ve given himself up as a sacrifice not only because he wanted her to be happy, but because he had no reason to continue living on, not after losing his wife, his job, his reputation, and the one he loved... It was a situation that Maruki understood painfully well, and he wanted to believe that Namatame had been sincere when he said that he had made it his new life mission to find the murderer and protect other potential targets.
That was a desire that Maruki wholeheartedly shared with Namatame, but he failed to understand how saving victims correlated in any way to kidnapping a six year old girl.
Still, Namatame hadn’t lied to Maruki once. He might’ve hidden part of the truth and even refused to answer Maruki’s questions at times, but he had never told a deliberate lie. Maruki had always vouched for the man’s honesty, even if no one believed him.
Well… Until now, at least.
Before Nanako’s kidnapping, Maruki would’ve trusted Namatame with his life. Despite not knowing each other for long, they had quickly forged a deep bond because they understood and accepted the other’s feelings like no one else could. Over the last few months, they had been each other’s refuge; Maruki was the only one in town who would listen to Namatame without questioning him or blaming him for Mayumi’s murder, Namatame was the only one who didn’t urge Maruki to move on from Rumi or to let go of his research, and they both needed someone to confide in, so their relationship progressed naturally.
They never intended their bond to be anything other than platonic, but, when Rumi and Mayumi’s absence had left them both starved of physical affection and the words of encouragement that they had depended on for so long, it was just a matter of time until a drunken Maruki impulsively kissed Namatame on the lips, only for Namatame to clutch his arms, pull him back, and make out with him until neither could breathe, before pinning him to the wall and planting needy kisses all over Maruki’s face like it was their last night alive.
They never defined their relationship, but, after that night, they had started calling each other by their first names without any prompting, mostly so they could mutter reassurances to the effect of “I love you, Taro” and “I love you too, Takuto” into each other’s ear, in a clumsy attempt to fill the emptiness left behind by their lovers, to try and ease the weight upon their backs, to try and mend their broken hearts, even when they knew they could only drag each other down and sink even deeper into their despair.
Their relationship was a fleeting transaction, an unspoken agreement, a simple coping mechanism: Maruki wasn’t ready to love anyone other than Rumi, and Namatame hadn’t yet mourned Mayumi properly, but Maruki needed someone to hold him and encourage him to continue his research, and Namatame needed someone to press kisses against his forehead and tell him that everything would be alright, even if he knew it wasn’t true, so they latched onto each other, taking in as much of their warmth as they could, like they would run out of it if they weren’t quick enough.
Since their relationship was built on the foundation of pain, it was doomed to fade away as soon as one of them found happiness. Maruki had hoped that Namatame would be the one to find happiness first… but, as of now, Namatame seemed to be suffering more than ever, if that was even possible.
Like always, things only seemed to be going downhill for Maruki.
“Please… please, you have to believe me.”
Maruki wanted to believe him.
He carefully stepped towards Namatame, who recoiled and pushed himself as far back on the bed as he could, taking the covers with him. A whimper escaped his lips as he watched Maruki come nearer with that uncharacteristically cold expression on his face.
“I’m not going to hurt you.” Maruki said, letting out a sigh. He placed his hand on the hospital cot, lowered himself, sitting down on the edge, and glanced at Namatame, before muttering, “You weren’t the one who killed Yamano-san… were you?”
Namatame shook his head weakly. “No.” He whispered, barely choking out the words. “No, of course not.”
It was obvious that he was making a huge effort just to speak without crumbling into pieces, as his breathing was loud and ragged and his chest moved shakily, his whole upper body quivering with each breath. His expression was contorted into a grimace, and his eyes, fixed on Maruki’s, were red and puffy, like he couldn’t stand to swallow back the tears any longer.
Those weren’t the eyes of a liar.
“Takuto.” Namatame’s voice cracked. “I would never--”
“Okay, okay.” Maruki said, taking Namatame’s hand in his, as he scooted closer to him on the bed. “It’s okay, I believe you.”
Namatame breathed out with a pained “aah…” and his shoulders sagged in relief, but he winced, as one of his wounds presumably acted up. Maruki held his hand and began to trace his veins and bony fingers, before moving on to draw circles over Namatame’s dry skin with his thumb. He had missed Namatame’s touch more than he cared to admit… He needed to treasure this moment, as it might be the last moment of intimacy they shared for god knows how long. Even if Namatame was proven innocent in regards to Mayumi’s murder, there was still a high possibility that he would go to prison for kidnapping, and, although Maruki knew that Namatame had to face consequences for hurting Nanako, he didn’t know how much longer he could hold on without Namatame’s support to rely on.
“I’m so sorry…” Namatame said. “I didn’t mean to hurt that little girl…”
Maruki only wished this could’ve ended differently.
He wished he had caught onto Namatame’s conflict before it was too late, that he had known about what he was planning to do behind his back before he went through with it, that Namatame had trusted him enough to confide in him, because then he could’ve done something to prevent the kidnapping, to talk him into reason, to find a way to help Nanako that didn’t involve tearing her away from her family and throwing her towards death’s doorstep.
Although he was great at reading people’s emotions, Maruki wasn’t a mind reader (not yet). There was no way he could have known what Namatame was thinking unless Namatame willingly opened up and asked for his help...
“I know it’s been hard since what happened to Yamano-san, but you have me, Taro.” Maruki leaned forward and gently pressed his face against Namatame’s chest, only feeling cold instead of the warmth he had been hoping to find. He closed his eyes, his voice becoming a murmur. “Please... let me help you.”
“I… I don’t know if you can…”
“I will.” Maruki furrowed his brows, giving Namatame’s hand a tight squeeze. “I will take away all of your suffering, Taro. I promise.”
If no one else had Namatame’s back, if one else stood by his side, if no one else could see him for who he truly was... then Maruki would.
After all…
What good is a savior if he doesn’t show compassion towards those who need him the most?

Wait just saw ur pinned post and now I HAVE to ask how maruki is being inserted into p4 ABDHDJFJ
SO GLAD YOU ASKED
Tumblr media
ASDFSHFG OKAY where to start?
I must have some kind of curse because whenever I try to write a fic I cannot physically resist the urge to put Maruki in it. So every time I start writing a P4 fic it feels like the how do you do fellow kids meme except it’s Maruki going “how do you do, fellow Persona 4™ characters?” This is funny in my head.
I also have tons of crossover ships involving Maruki and P4 characters (okay, they’re only three, but three crossover ships are three sources of pain too many), so it makes sense to put him in P4 so he can interact with them, right?
Usually, the way I put him where I want him to be is very basic. I just say that, after P5R, he moved to Inaba to get a fresh start in life. There, he meets Dojima and falls in love and gets married and becomes Nanako’s father and has a family of his own and they LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER.
(Hi there, hello, I’m the CEO of Dojiruki, nice to meet you :] )
But, well, using a post-canon setting ensures that neither him or the P4 characters can interfere with the main plot of the games.
HOWEVER, one of my fics, Tristitia, takes place during the main plot of P4 in an AU where everything is the same except Maruki is there and is dating Namatame. Well, they’re not dating, but it’s not really platonic either, it’s complicated. To be fair, though, Maruki doesn’t really affect the plot there, because he’s not close to any of characters (besides Namatame) and the whole fic is basically just Maruki reacting to Nanako’s kidnapping, combined with a bit of a character study and comparing and contrasting him and Namatame.
So, moving on. I do have an AU where Maruki plays a huge part in the plot of P4 and that is the Adaruki Roleswap AU, which is exactly what it sounds like. Maruki and Adachi are swapped, so Maruki is Dojima’s partner and the Inaba murderer while Adachi is Shujin’s counselor and can bend reality to his whim during the third semester. It’s the most elaborate AU in this list but it’s pretty half-baked, mostly because I cannot figure out Maruki’s motives for murder and Adachi’s motives to NOT murder the Phantom Thieves during the third semester.
Still, it’s a fun idea to toy around with, and I’ve written two fics about Maruki interacting with the P4 setting in this scenario, Credit Where It’s Due and Pink Alligator in a Forest of Green. I don’t consider any of those as strictly “canon” to the main plot of the AU, because that was just me playing around and seeing what I could do with the idea of Maruki being Dojima’s partner, but he gets to interact with six year old Nanako in the second one, so that’s nice :3
A similar AU that I haven’t talked about but that has been on my mind for a long time is the Dojiruki Roleswap AU. That one doesn’t change much in P4, only the Hierophant SL, but it’s also half-baked because I have no clue what to do with Nanako’s kidnapping since she’s not in Inaba but in Tokyo with Dojima. And, when it comes to the P5R side of things, Dojima’s reality bending shtick is a whole other can of worms. He should be easier to figure out than Adachi because at least he cares about people’s wellbeing, but that doesn’t mean it’s not gonna take a lot of planning too.
Maruki is still a counselor in this one, but I was thinking that Dojima could maybe be Akiren’s probation officer? We’ll see.
Oh, and I know we’re talking about Maruki and not Rumi, but I thought this might be relevant since we’re talking about P4 x P5R crossovers. In the Phantom Thief Rumi AU, the plot kicks off when Rumi moves out of her grandparents’ and moves to Inaba. But this AU is in its very early stages so I probably shouldn’t say much because else I might end up spoiling the whole plot :)
Anyways, I guess I just have a thing for putting Maruki and Rumi in Inaba and seeing how they interact with the setting and the other characters. Probably because P5R came out right in the middle of my P4 phase, haha :)
