Where did you watch Tesis? I can't seem to find it anywhere and I typically avoid pirating due to paranoia but it intrigues me so I'd consider pirating it

I'm glad I convinced you to watch tesis bc of Chema (literally look at his face!!!). At least here in Spain it's available on Netflix and then some other platforms (but you have to pay. I wouldn't tbh.)

Not sure if anyone’s familiar with Teatro Lope de Vega’s production of Les Miserables (Los Miserables) that was in Madrid in 2011. But I cannot recommend it enough. It’s professionally filmed and available on Youtube (it is in Spanish, but like…it’s really good…so)

I’ve been watching it today, and one of the things I adore about it is how their not afraid to let actors touch

A medida que pasa el tiempo, te das cuenta de que el bartender está muy ocupado. Miras a tu alrededor y ves a tres chicos guapos, pero hay uno en particular que llama más tu atención. Te das cuenta de que no son mexicanos; tienen un acento argentino. Sin embargo, el chico que estás mirando tiene un acento muy peculiar.

Sigues disfrutando de tu trago, y el chico se acerca a ti, diciendo: "Disculpa, eh... es que mis amigos me retaron a que te hablara, porque te ves hermosa y, en realidad, no sé cómo hablarte. Ah... ¿te apetece un trago en la terraza y una pizza? Veo que no has ingerido ningún alimento", dice con timidez.

Sonríes y le respondes, repitiendo sus palabras: " 'No has ingerido ningún alimento', suena muy formal, ¿no? Es que cuando estás tomando un trago, la comida va al final, like the end," dices, terminando en inglés.

"Bueno... arrancamos con un traguito, supongo que eso es un Moscow Mule, y al final nos mandamos una pizza," dice con un toque coqueto.

"¡Vale! Nos vamos pa' la terraza y charlamos," le dices, esbozando una sonrisa pícara.

Cuando suben las escaleras hacia la terraza de La Valentina, te quedas asombrada al contemplar el paisaje nocturno, con una iglesia colonial antigua como telón de fondo y las coloridas calles de Tlaquepaque. Las luces de la terraza crean un ambiente relajante y romántico, y a tu lado está el chico, y comienzas a admirarlo. Sus ojos tienen un toque de caramelo, pero debido a la oscuridad de la noche, se ven intensamente cafés puya. Su nariz es prominente, al estilo de Adam Driver, y su piel tiene un tono moreno, como café con un toque de leche. Alto y hermoso. Era simplemente perfecto.

Entonces, él te mira y se presenta diciendo: "Che, creo que debería presentarme. Soy Enzo, de Montevideo. Resulta que acabo de laburar en una película, o mejor dicho, soy actor, y..."

Sin embargo, lo interrumpes diciendo sorprendentemente: "¡Oh! Con razón ese acento. Me preguntaba de dónde eras. Anyway, me llamo (tu nombre) y soy de (tu país), pero llevo casi toda una vida viviendo en los Estados Unidos".

"Y... ¿por qué estás aquí?" él dice intrigado.

"Amo viajar, y la verdad es que no soy tan amante de Estados Unidos, así que decidí recorrer América Latina. Pronto me iré a España, ya que tengo amistades en Madrid. Quizás me quede allí y trabaje como maestra de inglés," respondes.

Enzo te mira con interés y te dice: "Me encanta que hagas eso— viajar y conocer el mundo. De verdad que sos muy afortunada. Ojalá te vea en Madrid, ya que laburo bastante por allá."

"Gracias, y tú, eres muy afortunado. Yo pienso que la actuación es un trabajo de talento y valentía," le decís orgullosamente, dejando un toque de coqueteo en tus palabras.

Mientras Enzo y tú están inmersos en una conversación sobre logros y conociéndose, entran los amigos de Enzo, visiblemente tomados. Un chico guapo y argentino le dice a Enzo: "Che, yo pensé que te habías desaparecido con la boluda," mientras otro chico le pregunta a Enzo: "Pero, ¿quién es esta chica, Enzo? Preséntela." Tú te ríes ante sus comentarios disparatados.

Enzo te mira medio avergonzado y suelta: "(Tu nombre), estos son mis amigos del alma y compatriotas, Matías, Agustín y Simón. Son más locos que una cabra en patines, pero los banco a muerte".

"Un placer," decís tímidamente, mientras Matías suelta con su típico humor: "Che, vos sos muy guapa, Enzo, me la cogiste, pero como amigo te la doy." Agustín te dice: "(Tu nombre), te dejamos a vos y a Enzo tranquilo, nosotros nos vamos para una discoteca. Enzo, me mandás un mensaje para saber que vos estás vivo. Y sí, vente chico’, que nos vamos, ciao." Todos se despiden de manera cómica y se encaminan hacia la discoteca.

Tú miras a Enzo riéndote, y él, medio avergonzado, te dice: "Los quiero, pero a veces se pasan." Tú te ríes aún más y le dices que no te preocupes. Después, Enzo te dice: "Vos tenés una sonrisa hermosa," y luego, como disculpándose, agrega: "Es que es verdad."

Después de la risueña conversación, Enzo te mira y sugiere: "¿Qué te parece si caminamos un poco por la calle? Seguro encontramos algo interesante." Asientes con entusiasmo, y juntos se aventuran por las coloridas calles de Tlaquepaque.

Enzo y tú se encuentran con unos mariachis que entonan “Y…” de Javier Solís. Sin dudarlo, Enzo te toma de la mano y te invita a bailar cómicamente en plena calle, siguiendo el ritmo apasionado de la música mexicana. Ríen y se divierten, creando un momento inolvidable mientras los mariachis continúan su serenata. La noche se llena de risas, música y la magia de ese encuentro espontáneo en las coloridas calles de Tlaquepaque.

Mientras caminan, se cruzan con una parada animada de tacos. Enzo sonríe y te propone: "(Tu nombre), ¿qué te parece si paramos acá y nos mandamos unos tacos? Y, obvio, los acompañamos con una Coronita." La idea te parece re buena, y los dos se acomodan en la parada, compartiendo risas y sabores locales.

Son las dos de la mañana y de repente llegan los tres amigos de Enzo, caminando en zigzag debido a la borrachera, y le gritan a los dos: "¡Enzoooo, boludo! ¿Nos vamos?" Enzo te mira y tú le dices: "No te preocupes, ya tienes mi número." Él te dice: "Me escribís cuando llegues a casa, y nos vemos mañana por un café, ¿vale?" Tú le respondes: "Claro, ¿cómo no?" y le das un beso, a lo cual Enzo responde profundamente. Mientras tanto, los chicos están gritando: "¡Enzoooo, ya cásate, cabrón!" La noche termina con risas, besos y la promesa de un encuentro al día siguiente.

💢 Rueda oculta los expedientes de los contratos a dedo de la Xunta con la empresa del cuñado de Feijóo

▪️ En el circo mediático y judicial que se ha instalado en España, asistimos a la tragicomedia diaria de Alberto Núñez Feijóo, quien no pierde oportunidad para pedir la dimisión de Pedro Sánchez por una causa prospectiva sin pruebas tangibles que afecta a su esposa. Mientras tanto, la Xunta de Galicia, bajo el mando de Alfonso Rueda, escamotea información sobre los contratos de emergencia durante la pandemia, contratos que benefician curiosamente a familiares y amigos del propio @NunezFeijoo.

El Bloque Nacionalista Galego (@obloque) ha alzado la voz contra esta opacidad vergonzosa. Solicitaron, como es su derecho, acceso a los expedientes de estos contratos. ¿La respuesta de la Xunta? Un espectáculo de ocultación digno de los mejores trucos de ilusionismo: los diputados del BNG fueron citados a ver documentos fragmentados en la pantalla de un ordenador, bajo la estricta supervisión de altos cargos, sin posibilidad de llevarse ni una sola hoja.

Entre las joyas que se ocultan tras este velo de secretismo están los contratos con Universal Support, empresa dirigida por Ignacio Cárdenas, cuñado de Feijóo, a la que se adjudicaron cerca de 20 millones de euros en plena crisis sanitaria. No olvidemos a Sibucu, la empresa del empresario cercano al PP que vendió mascarillas con sellos falsos y que, a pesar de la retirada del mercado de sus productos, continuó recibiendo contratos tanto de la Xunta como de la Comunidad de Madrid. Y para rematar, los contratos con Mapé Asesores, vinculados al novio de Isabel Díaz Ayuso, investigado por presunto fraude fiscal.

Es realmente esquizofrénico ver cómo la vara de medir cambia según quién esté bajo el foco. Si el protagonista es @sanchezcastejo, los medios y la oposición se lanzan al cuello con ferocidad, aunque las pruebas brillen por su ausencia. Pero si se trata de Feijóo o Ayuso, la tibieza y el encubrimiento reinan. El Consello de Contas de Galicia ya ha expresado serias dudas sobre la legalidad de estos contratos, pero parece que la indignación y el rigor desaparecen cuando los implicados son los amigos y familiares de la derecha.

En este contexto, la justicia y la prensa en España no son más que actores de una farsa que se representa día tras día, dejando claro que aquí la ley no es igual para todos. Los ciudadanos, perplejos, contemplamos cómo la decencia y la transparencia se desvanecen en el humo del engaño y la manipulación.

Marisa Paredes

Spanish star of films by Pedro Almodóvar, Guillermo del Toro and Roberto Benigni, and a champion of leftwing causes

The actor Marisa Paredes, who has died suddenly aged 78, was renowned for her elegance and “calm grace, that gentle cheerfulness that she ignited with one look of her pale eyes”, in the words of Gilles Jacob, former president of the Cannes film festival. She is best known for her roles in six films directed by Pedro Almodóvar.

After seeing her in a play, Almodóvar cast her as Sor Estiércol (Sister Manure) in Entre Tinieblas (Dark Habits, 1983). Later, she starred in his surreal melodrama Tacones Lejanos (High Heels, 1991). For her performance as a writer of romantic novels in his slightly more sober La Flor de Mi Secreto (The Flower of My Secret, 1995), she was nominated for a Goya best actress award. She also featured in Almodóvar’s Oscar-winning Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About My Mother, 1999).

She became one of Spanish cinema’s great figures, but was also outspoken throughout her life in support of leftwing causes. As president of Spain’s film academy from 2000 to 2003, she attacked the participation of José María Aznar’s Conservative government in the planned invasion of Iraq. Her televised speech at the annual Goya awards in 2003 helped mobilise mass demonstrations: “There is no need to be afraid of culture, entertainment or freedom of expression, and much less satire or humour. We should be afraid of ignorance and dogmatism. We should be afraid of war.”

In the 1980s Paredes built a solid reputation in Spanish cinema, working with up-and-coming young directors, such as Fernando Trueba in Ópera Prima (Debut, 1980), Jaime Chávarri, Jaime Rosales and Agustí Vilaronga in Tras el Cristal (In a Glass Cage, 1986). Her performance in Vilaronga’s macabre anti-Nazi film was her own favourite. For José Sacristán’s comedy Cara de Acelga (Like Death Warmed Up, 1987) she was nominated for a Goya as best supporting actress.

In the 90s, her leading parts in Almodóvar films broadened her career into international cinema. She worked with Alain Tanner in France, Manoel de Oliveira in Portugal and shot two films with the Mexican Arturo Ripstein: Pintura Carmesí (Deep Crimson, 1996) and El Coronel No Tiene Quien le Escriba (No One Writes to the Colonel, 1999), a successful adaptation of a Gabriel García Márquez novel. She was in the Italian Roberto Benigni’s La Vita è Bella (Life Is Beautiful, 1997) and Guillermo del Toro’s El Espinazo del Diablo (The Devil’s Backbone, 2001). Over her six-decade career, she acted in more than 70 films.

The youngest of four daughters, Marisa was born in Madrid, in the block of flats on Plaza de Santa Ana where her mother, Petra (nee Bartolomé), was the concierge. Her father, Lucio Paredes, worked in the El Águila beer factory. These were years of hunger after the civil war (1936-39) and her family was poor. From the age of six, she told her mother she wanted to be an actor: the Teatro Español, one of the city’s main theatres, just across the square from her home, inspired her. Reasonably, her parents opposed this insecure career: they aspired for her to become a secretary. Paredes was always proud of her working-class origins. “My elegance comes from my grandfather, who was a farm-worker,” she would say.

Focused on her ambition, she left school aged 11, defeated parental opposition to study at the Madrid dramatic arts school and pushed her way into small film roles at the age of 14. In 1962 she met Fernando Fernán-Gómez, anarchist and brilliant actor and director, who helped mould both her acting and her view of the world. She acted in his film El Mundo Sigue (The World Continues, 1965).

In the 60s and 70s she worked in many films without breaking through to leading roles. The story was different on Televisión Española, where she acted in around 80 plays, often dramatisations of novels. “I had the good fortune that, as I don’t look Spanish ... when television was cultured and broadcast plays, I was in all the dramas of Chekhov, Dostoevsky, Ibsen. I was the Russian soul,” Paredes explained. She was an all-round talent, acting not just in theatre and highbrow TV, but in musicals, comedies and even a spaghetti western.

With her height, aristocratic bearing and blond hair, Paredes was reminiscent of a classic Hollywood star. Yet she was not vain: she had a warm smile and generous nature, and had the enthralling gift of great screen actors of expressing emotion with a single look or grimace.

She won prizes for her theatre, television and film work, and an honorary Goya for her career in 2018.

Paredes supported #MeToo vigorously and campaigned in the July 2023 general election for Sumar, the junior leftwing partner in Spain’s coalition government. As recently as 30 November, she read the manifesto in a demonstration against Israel’s actions in Gaza. Need a tier list of Munks (I know there's one for Mistos)

So I was just thinking about a Tier List ranking for Mistos that I've seen out there, and now I'm wondering if someone did one for the various Munks (and they better have Gruber's Munk in S-tier at least). By the way, I was looking at the list of Munk actors on the Cats wiki, and I did NOT know that Geoffrey Garratt had played Munkustrap as well (back in 1992, apparently. Well now I need to see what HIS Munk was like now. Hand over the bootleg, please.

What other Munks would you put in a tier list and where would you rank them? Other Munks I can think of:

S Tier (absolute creme de la creme, my fave takes on the "Courageous, Imposing, Energetic" words): Michael Gruber (as hinted before), Steve Barton, Jack Rebaldi (I think you spell it like that? He's Madrid 2004 Munk), Alexander Auler

A Tier (not my absolute faves, but still got the character in a way I still love): Andy Huntington-Jones (2016 Revival), Robbie Fairchild (yes I'm including 2019 Munk, aka the man who launched a thousand Munkoff fics.), Paul Hadobas (Zurich 1991/2)

B Tier (I like them well enough, but don't capture Munk the way I prefer, for example maybe imposing but not very energetic, and so on): Darryl Robinson (1989 Vienna), Matthew Pike (the cover Munk in the Hamburg 1999 bootleg) (He's just too...mellow, for me. I need some energy here!)

I honestly can't think of any Munk that I'd rank below B tier (all Munks are good Munks to me, from what I've seen so far, I guess). What are others' thoughts?

Most of my characters (that had already appeared in my story) didn't have any references when I made them, and believe me, I made them with all of my heart, and imagination, and with love.

I have characters that were mentioned by name before, or still just listed in my drafts, and now that they needed to appear, and with no brainpower left to think what they look like, I thought of actors and actresses, and beauty queens and models, and used their likeness as references!

Do keep in mind that they won't be exact copies of the person I referenced to. There are times I can't get their lips, or noses, or cheeks right so I had to tweak it more, or less, or something else (😭😭😭😭)

So, in order of their CAS creation, these are some of my characters (that had already appeared) with their references:

Iris -> Glaiza De Castro (queen of full bangs i must say)

Mata -> Ruru Madrid (he also had that strip thing on his brows, and i didn't realized i also gave Mata those lol)

Beatrice Valderama -> Chelsea Manalo (our miss universe philippines 🥺)

Kashvi Argunas -> Charithra Chandran (confession: i have never read or watched bridgerton, but i've seen clips of her in the show and she's so beautiful, so demure, so yeah)
