Naveen Andrews (“Lost”): de Perdidos al Bollywood.

La gran mayoría de nosotros conocimos a Naveen Andrews como el iraquí Sayid Jarrah, uno de los supervivientes del vuelo 815 de Oceanic. Posteriormente participó también en las series Once Upon a Time in Wonderland y Sense8, y también en la película de 2013 Diana.

Naveen Andrews es un actor británico hijo de inmigrantes procedentes de Kerala, India. Tuvo una adolescencia conflictiva, marcada por la rebeldía y el rechazo de sus padres a su vocación artística, lo que provocó que a los 15 años le echaran de casa. Asistió a la Guildall School of Music and Drama, donde fue compañero de los actores Ewan McGregor y Daniel Craig.

Pero hoy nos vamos a centrar (por interesante que sea su turbulento pasado) en las apariciones del británico en el cine de la India. Como Andrews no aprendió a hablar hindi de pequeño, las películas de Bollywood en las que aparece son de habla inglesa, coproducciones británicas por lo general.

Naveen Andrews e Indira Varma en la película Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love.

En 1996 protagoniza el romance histórico Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, junto con Indira Varma (Juego de Tronos), Sarita Choudhury (Sinsajo Parte II, La Joven del Agua) y la famosa actriz hindú Rekha. La cinta, estrenada en el festival de Cannes, ganó el Independent Spirit Award por mejor fotografía en 1998 y fue nominada a la Concha de Oro en el festival de San Sebastián.

Dos años más tarde se estrena la comedia Bombay Boys, que sigue a tres jóvenes hindúes que vuelven a la India después de crecer en occidente. La película fue objeto de gran controversia debido a la homosexualidad presente en ella y a considerarse “profana”, y por tanto la crítica reaccionó de manera negativa.

Bodas y Prejuicios, adaptación de Orgullo y Prejuicio al más puro estilo Bollywood.

Quizás Bodas y Prejuicios sea la más conocida en España, ya que la han emitido varias veces en televisión. Esta adaptación de la novela Orgullo y Prejuicio la dirigió Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham y Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging) en 2004, y cuenta con Aishwarya Rai, Martin Henderson, Daniel Gillies (Vampire Diaries), Anupam Kher (The Silver Linings Playbook), Indira Varma, Marsha Mason (Frasier) y Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls), además del propio Andrews.

En esta película Andrews se marca un baile totalmente “Pita del” que resulta ser de los mejores momentos de la cinta. Personalmente, me parece muy sencilla de ver y tiene puntos bastante simpáticos, aunque no resulta una maravilla a nivel técnico ni interpretativo.

Naveen Andrews es el marido maltratador de Aishwarya Rai en Provoked.

En 2006 protagoniza el biopic británico Provoked, que cuenta el proceso penal al que hizo frente Kiranjit Ahluwalia tras asesinar a su abusivo marido. Aunque recibió críticas negativas por su dirección y ritmo, se alabó la actuación de Aishwarya Rai como Kiranjit, así como la importancia del trasfondo de la película.
