As usual, Jaden came in to the echo of locks turning. Unlike usual, he didn’t speak for a while. Dale slowly stared the man down, eyes locked with his. There was nothing behind that gaze. Nothing Dale could pull apart, nothing he could use to force Jaden to remember they were human.

“Alright,” Jaden said, finally breaking his silence. “One of you three is coming with me.”

His heart leapt into his throat.

“Talk among yourselves or whatever. One of you is coming with me.” “Me.” Dale ignored the heavy stares of Thom and Summer and preempted them, cutting them off at the pass and almost talking over Jaden in his haste.

“Dale, no!” Summer snarled. “Don’t!”

“First come first serve.” With those flat, ominous words, Jaden strode deeper into the room and grabbed Dale by the arm, yanking him halfway to his feet- only halfway. Dale hated leaning into Jaden, this crude mockery of support as Jaden took his weight from his broken leg, but it was better than the alternative. Surprisingly though, the motion wasn’t as painful as he was expecting. His leg actually felt steadier than he’d assumed it would be.

That by no means meant he would let Jaden know this.

Jaden, who hadn’t said a word, even as he latched - one, two, three, four of five locks, and ignored Summer and Thom’s shouts, and the solid sounding thud as Summer - Dale assumed it was Summer - threw herself at the door.

“Let us out, you bastard!”

Yes. It was Summer.

He expected some sort of comeback, some sort of snarky response, but Jaden’s silence continued. His posture was nothing like it had been when he had forced the kiss on him, and Dale’s anxiety continued to rise as Jaden half-carried him to the bathroom. At this angle, and without Jaden paying him much attention, Dale had a good view of the basement.

There were three doors in the narrow hallway, including the one they’d emerged from. Their cell was situated directly across from another door at the end of the hallway, next to an overflowing bookshelf- on the opposite end, their goal.

The same awkward hold as last time- Jaden’s arm holding him tightly around the waist, Dale’s own arm slung across his shoulder- saw a return as Jaden split his focus to opening the door.

Of all things, Dale was not expecting a bathroom. A rather well furnished one at that, with a large tub shower, steel fittings, towel racks, the works. Stacked on the toilet, two six packs sat, and behind them, two plastic cups.

Stunned into quiet curiosity, Dale didn’t fight as Jaden set him down on the plush bath mat and turned to close and lock the door.

It seemed the pair holding them captive were quite fond of locks.

Jaden turned to face Dale and slid down the wood. Dale stared back, and watched as the other man slowly peeled two cans from the plastic rings, cracked the seal, and held the open one out to him.

Questioning with his gaze alone, Dale didn’t dare disobey the tacit demand. The last time Jaden and alcohol mixed was still crystal clear in the back of his mind, though there wasn’t a gun this time.

“I knew you’d volunteer,” Jaden said flatly once Dale accepted. He opened his own and took a small sip. “To protect Thom and Summer. You’re really… annoyingly predictable like that, Dale.”

“I will protect them as long as I --”

“Blah blah, very noble. Drink. Sorry this discussion has to be in the bathroom, but space is limited at the moment and I didn’t install an acorn stairlift yet.”

That made about as much sense as Jaden ever did. “Okay. Fine. Alright- what discussion?”

Jaden waited for Dale to take a drink before he spoke again, and surprisingly, he took a sip at the same time as him. “You and I will be negotiating some things. Living arrangements. The inn is full up but things can change.” Despite the obvious joke, the delivery was bland and emotionless. Coming from the usually overly animated man, the living caricature, it was shockingly unnerving.

Yet again, as Dale took another swig from the can, Jaden matched him. Was this an attempt to mimic his behavior and create some approximation of rapport? Mirroring was a common manipulation tactic. But no, as Dale tested his theory with a too quick sip, Jaden didn’t seem aware of his own action. Interesting. He could use that, if only he knew exactly how the younger man reacted to inebriation.

“What is on the table for discussion?” Dale asked carefully. Already, he was thinking over what he could ask for, and trying to determine what Jaden would be most opposed to, and what Dale could even offer in exchange.

“Creature comforts first. You’re all weaker than you ought to be- not enough protein or fat in your diets.”

Dale swallowed his bitter comment and another sip of bitter beer.

Jaden made a face as he did the same. “Look- yeah- well, whatever, that will change. Next, water. Twice a day. I have a job other than you guys.”

Well that was a surprising bit of information. Dale nodded his thanks and drank his beer. On an empty stomach, it would hit sooner, but he at least knew how to handle beer better than hard liquor, and Jaden’s last dredges were a little sloppy.

Pushing himself to his feet, Jaden grabbed the two cups and began filling. His grip visibly tight around the glasses, he snapped, “You’re meant to alternate, aren’t you, when drinking long term?”

“No, that’s correct,” Dale assured him softly, watching how that tension eased slightly and Jaden’s expression lightened as he offered the water. It hit with an abrupt sense of absurd humor that this monster that had so much control over their lives also knew nothing about how to function. Dale couldn’t drain the cup fast enough- despite his guilt knowing Summer and Thom were not getting the same water he was. Jaden frowned and took the cup back and refilled it.

“They’ll get a couple bottles after, it’s whatever. Free water and Nestle bad and- whatever. What next?”

What next. Even though he’d just drained an entire glass, his mouth became dry. What next indeed. How much could he push for? Dale asked, “What about blankets? Pillows? Clothes?”

“Hey, old timer, one at a time.” Jaden quietly chastised him over the lid of his cup. A faint smirk pulled at his lips. “We have hours, kiddo.”

At the unexpected burst of venom in Jaden’s voice, Dale froze. He couldn’t even bring himself to breathe, afraid that this whole ordeal was an elaborate test and Dale’s failure would negatively affect Thom and Summer’s chances.

Icily, Jaden glared at Dale and finished his water in a few long swallows, immediately moving to open two more beers.

“Never pegged you for an actual drinker,” Jaden said. His tone was softer, contemplative, and the earlier vitriol was gone. “Color me surprised. College?”

“When I started drinking?” Dale asked.

Jaden nodded over the lip of his beer.

“Then, yes. College.” There wasn’t much harm in revealing that much, and every small scrap he offered Jaden seemed to want and fed into this quasi-friendly atmosphere, this illusion that they were nothing more than a pair of drinking buddies.

“Cheers, then.” On cue, Jaden took a long swig, his attention locked on Dale as he drained his can of a few too long sips, as if wondering if he would say anything. Dale wouldn’t. “You asked about clothes.”

“I did.” Dale pretended to take another sip, faking his swallow and cringe at the flavor, and watched Jaden follow suit. “Undergarments, shirts, pants.” Poor Thom was still pants-less. Dale’s shirt had been sacrificed to keep Summer’s dignity intact. “Two sets, at least, unless you want to do laundry.”

He was getting bold, pushing just a little, but the color in Jaden’s cheeks was encouraging. As was his thoughtful nod.

“Yeah, sure,” Jaden said easily. Too easily. Dale’s skin prickled. “Clothes. Got it. Blankets too?”

“Yes.” The basement was temperature controlled, thankfully, but it would go a long way to making their unfortunate stay more comfortable. Plus they could hide things that way, if they had the fabric to cover it, and if this became more common, perhaps they could grab something. As it was, the water bowl was sturdy, as his broken nose could attest, and if Dale could get upright, then maybe they could work on trying to escape…

“Hey. Hey. Dale? You can’t be that out of it yet.”

Dale snapped back to reality, rather than his daydream of bashing in Jaden’s skull, and a wave of cold washed over him at the realization that he was disappointed he couldn’t hurt him yet. He wasn’t a violent man, he prided himself on keeping calm, on not reacting with his immediate instinct and instead determining what would actually help. It seemed this manchild that didn’t even know how to drink at an appropriately leisurely pace knew exactly how to get under his skin and fill his mind with dark fantasies.

“Yeah, sorry,” Dale mumbled, not even fully sure why he was apologizing. “Blankets and pillows.”

Jaden snorted in amusement and sucked down the last few swallows of beer. “Sure. Bedding, a wardrobe change, and more dinners and water. Anything else?”

His attention darted to the tub. “Showers. Regular bathroom breaks.”

“Yeah, that’d go a long way to feeling more human, wouldn’t it?” Jaden murmured. Dale fought down a rush of frustration, because yes, that was exactly it. Either not noticing, or not caring, about the flash of irritation that crossed Dale’s features, Jaden offered his hand.

“That’s it?”

“Do you have anything else you want?”

“No- no, what do you want in exchange?”

The grin Jaden gave him could only be considered sharklike. “Isn’t that the bitch. You’ll figure it out, but you’re not asking the world here.”

Because you’ve set the bar underground, Dale thought, but didn’t dare say. It isn’t some achievement to finally reach the bare minimum.

Jaden wagged his hand expectantly, reminding Dale that he had to finalize the deal. Obligingly, Dale shook a monster’s hand.

He felt surprisingly dirty after the fact. Even more so when Jaden smirked.

“You know,” Jaden drawled, opening his third beer. Dale side eyed the speed. He hadn’t even bothered with the water this time. “I’m not stupid.”

His heart climbed into his throat. Dismissing the abrupt lack of color in Dale’s face. Jaden continued after another long drag. The

He didn’t respond. Instead, he pulled his hand back and gripped his lukewarm beer.

“You’re just… playin’ nice so I don’t hurt your…” Jaden rolled his eyes and waved a dismissive hand, or maybe it was just an uncertain gesture. “Whatever you call Thom and Summer. Your kids or whatever, because somehow--” His rage built, clearly, but he forced it back, sullenly glaring at the can in his hands. “Whatever. You obey, but you don’t respect me. Not really.”

Surprised by the rant, Dale simply watched Jaden, unsure of what he could say, let alone what would diffuse the tension in the room.

Apparently Jaden had an idea. “Tell me about your wife,” he ordered.

So, Dale did. While he talked, Jaden drank, though he did resume drinking water between. After a little, as his own head lightened with the buzz of inebriation, and the longer Jaden went on without randomly switching back to his volatile mood swings or tirades about respect, Dale almost found himself relaxing.

Almost.

He could never forget what Jaden had done, and allowed to be done, to Thom and Summer, nor what he’d done to Dale.

Dale simply waited.

I found my mother in the gloom clutching a letter from Acorn Stairlifts. She was fixated on the offer of a £50 reward if she referred someone to get a stairlift. I said, “You don’t know anyone that needs a stairlift.” (She probably once did, but now they are mostly dead, or if not, already have one.) But she wouldn’t have it. Eventually, when I said I was going to put the shopping in the fridge, she said I should put the letter there as well. I said, “We don’t put letters in the fridge. We put food in the fridge.” “That’s true,” she quickly replied.

Later, the phone rang, and I soon regretted answering it as it was a woman named Monica with a thick accent saying that a warranty on my mother’s washing machine was up for renewal. I was straight away dubious that this was genuine, but I listened, reluctantly, to sales patter about policy benefits and a telephone no. for engineer call-out. Then she passed me over to a man who said his name was Johnny, and it was more spiel about benefits, and did I want to add any more appliances to the policy. Finally, he moved on to asking for card details. I said that I didn’t want to provide such details over the phone and could he put something in writing, but he said they only sent promotional material in the mail. I responded that I would need to discuss the matter with my mother, and he said that was fine and he could call back in 10 minutes. I said that I wouldn’t be there (checkmate), so he gave up, saying he’d call back some other time. If he does call and my mother answers it, she won’t tell him anything to his advantage as she doesn’t know the card no. or other details necessary for any scam to succeed. But no doubt it would cause her some anxiety, which she could do without.

Soon after I left the house, it began to rain heavily again, so I thought I’d go to the Wetherspoon’s on the High Road (The Holland Tringham). I had something to eat and a pint of Sambrook’s Junction (good). I originally only planned to have one pint, but an hour later it was still pouring with rain, so I thought I’d wait it out in hopes of the rain stopping, which it eventually did. There was a notice pinned on the wall saying all ales were reduced to 99p once more following the announcement of Tier 3 restrictions from Wednesday. For my second pint I had Ruddles bitter, which only costs £1.29 at full price, so not much of a saving, but it was very good – tasted fresh.

I’m a fan of Wetherspoon’s but the Holland Tringham not so much. It’s a bit dowdy and seems to attract a higher ratio of rather washed-up-looking, decrepit customers (of course, I’m not far off being one of them myself, so I shouldn’t complain). At a nearby table, two somewhat elderly women who had long finished their drinks (and, presumably, mandatory meals) were playing cards endlessly. One of them kept coughing, which made me feel slightly uneasy.

By the time I’d finished my beer, it was past 8.00 pm, so too late to walk all the way home. Not that I would have really wanted to, because I’d done 16 miles on Friday and 10 miles on Saturday and was wary of bringing on a bout of tendonitis, or whatever it is that I suffer from periodically (various pains in my right hip, knee and shin). Instead, I thought I’d just walk to Trafalgar Square, which would be around 8 miles, and I could get the bus home from there.

The rain had only just stopped, so the pavements were still soaking wet and dotted with puddles, plus the streets had completely emptied out to almost lockdown levels. That, and the fact I was slightly buzzing from the alcohol, meant the first four or five miles were quite exilharating, before I started to tire a little. I couldn’t be bothered to think of different routes, so I mostly just walked the same way as on many previous occasions:

Bus: 29 to Harringay

Weather: heavy rain in the afternoon and again in the early evening, but dry later; mild; light winds
