i have decided to make this animal crossing notion page everyone's problem actually (she will be public when she's done bc i want more to come out of this thing than just my friend + i using it)
u can only add up to 100 items into a database n i wanted to have a thing where u can mark which villagers u have + another of which villagers u want right ? theres like nearly 450 villagers.
my brilliant solution to this is a google spreadsheet instead that has (what i've deemed) the relevant info for every villager so that u could copy + paste that shit onto the notion. the plan is to also make images + upload those to a google drive folder so u could add them to make shit look nice in the gallery view.
i have yet to do much progress on the databases for critters n other collectibles, n i have much more planned. i am so very normal
#text#insane acnh notion log#(relevant info is name/species/personality/birthday)#im not expecting to finish this soon but i like having a long term project to work on its nice :]

going off that capitalism tangent, this reminds me of how when nookazon came out, and animal crossing players JUMPED to being greedy and charging millions of bells on the most basic items. i know on ebay and other sites people paid ACTUAL money. the acnh community has always touted itself to be chill, cozy, relaxing, but you go on nookazon and theyāve completely given up on that notion to be a pixel billionaire. or should i say bellionaire. anyways, this tweet surmises it all
it is interesting seeing so many people complain about stardew valley being stressful and having āstrict time restraintsā bc I feel like the main source of stress for players is largely self imposed bc the people i always see saying shit like āi thought this was supposed to be a chill slow paced farming game!ā are always the people minmaxing and trying to speedrun events like getting the greenhouse or finishing the community center year 1 and generally trying to make the MOST amount of money as soon as possible even though those tasks are not inherently necessary to the core of the game like you are grinding for absolutely no reason!! you have an infinite number of years on your farm, itās okay if you pass out in the mines.
like you donāt actually HAVE to rush through your tasks. thereās no punishment for not completing something. and the timed quests for the community board like delivering a quartz for shane in 2 days arenāt that big a deal.
thereās a lot to be said i guess regarding the capitalist work ethic that we canāt seem to shake even in video games that donāt have specific rules about productivity. like CA has said before that you can play the game however you want. and thatās what i do, personally. itās interesting how a lot of people heard that and decided no, im gonna try to be a millionaire in game as soon as possible! at the end of the day, if this game causes you more stress than in your daily regular life, either adjust your habits or maybe play something else idk! and i know that stress is not inherently negative and that people like the busywork of stardew, but im mainly talking about the ppl who are genuinely like frustrated.

š get to know people game š
tagged by @seashrine, been awhile since i tried something like this :0c!
Current Time: 1:45 PM
Anything you intend to do later: work on more self-improvement stuff, like start using the notion app to organize to-do lists better, get my stuff together to maybe draw and post online more again, hone my storyboard skills, etc,, esp for video essay or silly nuzlocke ideas i have various ideas w both experimental visuals and Tone/"writing" to consider, but also like. Do the thing, not just hypothesize about
Anything you recently watched or played: replaying lies of p's demo (my first shot trying to Get Into a soulsborne game and mechanics to boot, the lore compels me!) and the original pinocchio story to see what adaptations the game is doing, i love creative reinterpretations/expansions upon the source material stories can do! aside from that, trying to relax w acnh and mp100 as always, along w satoshi kon's filmography
Anything you want to watch or play: kh4 more like khiv drip--kidding, aside from my terminal kh affliction and frustration w the lack of news of either kh4 or missing link atm, the full lies of p game when it comes out! aside from that, i think i want to properly decorate my acnh island, it's v barren and i still haven't done much decoration... for media to watch, i still have a huge backlog of animated media to watch for both relaxation and storyboard analysis (the owl house, monkie kid, rottmnt, etc), my affliction w storyboard and animation is just as terminal
not gonna tag anyone bc i don't want to peer pressure, but esp if you're a mutual/friend reading this, feel free to do it too!

01. techo kaigi 2022
wanna try out actually blogging on my blog!! chatty post under the cut. itās about journals for next year and how i use them!
for a while now, i keep on joking that iāll drop everything and become a stationery youtuber. in reality iām too shy, self-conscious of my voice, and my desk setup is too messy for my liking to take a video of LOL...Ā but iām still fairly interested in the journaling community and peopleās thoughts about planners. iām a big lurker, but i really enjoy talking about things i like! so i kinda want to try using tumblr to talk about my interests! twitter is a pretty social platform, but thereās only so many tweets i can thread before feeling likeĀ ānow iām really talking too muchā and then i stop LOL
anyways, i thought that a good first stationery blog post would be about my planner lineup for 2022!
š¤ hobonichi a6 - crane cover (from sakurahandcraft on etsy)
my main journal for memory keeping and scrapbooking! iāve been using a hobonichi since 2019 and i think itās been really helpful for me. i didnāt vibe with the a6 hobonichi covers this year so i went with a cover from an indie shop! people are super creative with designs. i really liked this cover because i felt like itād look nice with the hobonichi weeks cover (also..... mail bird...... oc content.....)! iāve been matching my a6 and weeks covers for the past few years so i feel like i canāt get out of it haha.
the way i use hobonichi is pretty straightforward - i try to incorporate a little bit of journaling every day, so the one page a day works really well for me. iām comfortable with the smaller a6 size, the empty space isnāt as intimidating to me. prior to hobonichi, i tried bullet journaling, but i realize... i HATED having to write the date every day LMAOOO so i feel more ready to just jump right into journaling.
some other things i use the a6 for: habit tracking! i track things like going to bed early, drinking a certain amount of water, etc. i like using rainbow highlighters because itās satisfying to see a full row filled up!!
(plant stickers by @/itskleine, washi by me)
admittingly i slacked off on doing these monthly doodles because i wasnāt feeling well (i think... this is the only month i had completely filled outĀ šā), but i rly enjoy seeing these filled! i want to try and do better next year on these because itās cool seeing a month in review.
sometimes i miss pages, or i donāt really know what to write on some days, and thatās ok! when iām at a loss, i tend to write out quotes, stuff that resonates with me, or horoscopes lol. (the above acnh image is actually a shop promo image, so i use my empty pages accordingly LOL)
š± hobonichi weeks - dandelion pappus
(stamp washi by @/blueludebar, boat washi by @/anguiculus on twt)
iāve been enjoying hobo weeks the past few years, but not sure if iāll use it moving forward since i started a new job! regardless i still got one because i like using it for both work/art-related things and other miniscule tasks.Ā
(egg sticker by @/kaiami, washi by me)
as you can see i keep the exact same layout every week LOL, which i think is fine! it works for me! i put general goals for the week on the blank page so that i can remember what i want to get done over the course of the week. i also like separating the columns and pages for personal stuff and for art stuff.
for monthly pages in the weeks, i put in events or outings. i used to indicate my spending but now i use notion for that!
Ā šĀ leuchtturm1917 a5
(stickers by @/missdurianne, @/kinwamonster, @/karakanani on ig, @/superaenbow on twt)
this is something new iām trying out! admittingly blank right now but iām hoping to put art iāve made in there and also log achievements/nice things that people say to me bc... my brain fogs and i donāt remember good stuff as much as i do the badĀ šš iām hoping that itāll be a positive notebook when i have a bad day!
š¶ midori pocket diary b6 - dog
iāve been using the midori diaries to track my health (both physical and mental). itās really helpful for me because my memory has been very bad (esp with pandemic etc etc), and itās very useful for whenever i have doctors appointments. the inside pages are already decorated, so i donāt have to focus too much on it looking nice, which i really like.
š± chococat blank notebook
admittingly i donāt know the specs of this notebook because..... itās from 2005 LMAOOO?? this is myĀ āmorning pagesā / stream-of-consciousness notebook. itās a habit iāve been doing for a few years! yumi sakugawa made a good post explaining morning pages here. whenever i write, i try and pick a notebook that isnāt too expensive or an old notebook i never used. it doesnāt super matter because itās just a space for me to write unfiltered thoughts, so it really doesnāt have to be pretty haha. i donāt really want it to be because itās a vent notebook!!! tbh i donāt really look back on this notebook, but itās very helpful for me to have a space where i can let out thoughts without being judged - i like doing this in the morning so i can start the day with a clear head!
...and thatās it!! (i say, as i write a long post HAHA) if anyone is also journaling or buying planners for next year, i always love to hear what other setups are out there! i always get a little melancholy and existential at the end of the year, but planners and stationery helps cheer me up so that i can look forward to the new year, a clean slate.

ACNH: Colonial Desires in the Context of Quarantine
Since finishing up my undergraduate studies in June, one of the major things I've been doing with my free time is playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons (please don't @ me but I've already logged something like 400 hours). As much fun as the game is, one of the things that's really stood out to me is how much AC:NH depends on and reifies colonial logics, and how important it is to unpack this in the context of the game's popularity and the ongoing pandemic.
One of the first ways I want to address colonialism in AC:NH this is through the way I was first introduced to it, namely through its connection to my thesis and what I refer to as the "terraforming imaginary". Before I started playing or had even decided to buy the game, I was working on my thesis "Constructing New Worlds: An Investigation of Climate Change and the Terraforming Imaginary" (which, shameless self plug but if you're interested you can check out my 10 minute video presentation for symposium at Johns Hopkins University here). During this time I was talking about my thesis pretty non-stop with anyone who would listen and as a result probably about half of my friends independently sent me this meme
[ID: meme from @animalcrossingmemes which shows two children; the one on the left is smiling and looking off into the distance with the label "daydreaming about terraforming" while the child on the right looks stressed and upset with the label "actually terraforming". Beneath this meme is text from @kaijuno which reads "I realize this is an animal crossing meme but as an astrophysicist I was really excited for a second that someone was finally seeing the light on how fricking difficult an a huge waste of time it would be to try to terraform Mars". Beneath this text is another meme with four hands gripping each other's wrists to make a circle. In the center is the initial animalcrossingmemes image and each arm is labeled, respectively, "Minecraft Players," "Sims Players," "Animal Crossing Players," and "Astrophysicists apparently"]
Although my thesis addresses terraforming in the context of space exploration/colonization, AC:NH's engagement with "terraforming" (alongside other aspects of colonial practices and desires) helps to expand on the stakes of this. The reason I put "terraforming" in scare-quotes is becauseā¦technically, there isn't any terraforming in AC:NH, given that terraforming is "the operation consisting of rendering other stellar bodiesāmainly planets and eventually asteroidsāappropriate for human life" (FrĆ©dĆ©ric Neyrat, 46). While I'm all down for an interpretation of the Animal Crossing world as a non-Earth planet and the villagers as aliens, the island is already suitable for human life and the use of "terraforming" in the game is generally more readily identifiable as geoconstructivism: players redesign and restructure their islands, shaping waterways and topography to create idealistic spaces (as opposed to making the island literally livable). Either way, it speaks to the terraforming imaginaryāthe underlying set of logics and desires conducive to the imagining and desiring of āterraformingā, ie the logics and desires of colonization. Even though AC:NH's terraforming isn't technically terraforming, it is an embodiment of the terraforming imaginary, centering desires for the "civilizing"/"cultivating" of a space into an orderly, colonized ideal. On even a very surface level it is useful to think about this through the island rating system: islands are ranked out of five stars, with deductions made for things such as having "too many" weeds or not "cleaning up" by leaving items lying around rather than placed with intention.Ā
Another, perhaps more obvious, way in which AC:NH embodies colonial logics is through the "Nook Miles Tickets". Players trade in Nook Miles (an achievement based currency) for tickets which they can take to the airport and use to visit other, uninhabited islands which they can destroy to extract all of the resources slash-and-burn style. Players also have an increased likelihood of catching rare insects, fish, and sea animals to display to their own island museum or sell. As Wilbur, a dodo pilot, explains about this process: "we run the 'finders keepers' protocol here. Lumber, fruit, fish, whatever? Yours if you can carry it", going on to emphasize the importance of not leaving anything behind as there will be no returning; they "burn the flight plans" after each flight.
Although the rampantly destructive extraction of resources is the most apparent embodiment of colonial logics, the centrality of the museum and the imperative to complete each wing by finding and identifying all of the bugs, fish/sea creatures, fossils, and artworks in the game is an equally significant connection to colonialism. Benedict Anderson argues in Imagined Communities that the museum, along with the census and the map, "shaped the way in which the colonial state imagined its dominionāthe nature of the human beings it ruled, the geography of its domain, and the legitimacy of its ancestry" (164). The specifics Anderson goes into differ of course, because he's talking about actual colonial states while AC:NH has the fluidity of embodying the underpinning desires which colonialism as process requires to function, but what holds true is that these specific forms of producing, organizing, and displaying knowledge which produced "a totalizing classificatory grid, which could be applied with endless flexibility...to be able to say of anything that it was this, not that; it belonged here, not there" (Anderson 184). Essentially, in AC:NH part of a player's ownership of the island occurs through a player's ability to classify and collect artefacts for the museum. Furthermore, this imperative to collect and preserve fossils, art work, bugs, fish, and sea creatures is part of the way the player's island is positioned as a place of value.Ā
The museum also implicitly functions to reify positions of authority, legitimizing a kind of monopoly of knowledge. In AC:NH, this primarily means the positions of the museum curator (Blathers) and, to a degree, Tom Nook (who selected and invited Blathers) are secured as the authorities on knowledge. When Tom Nook tells the player that the island(s) are deserted, we must take this as truth...yet fishing both on the player's island and the Nook Miles islands can turn up trash items like old tires, tin cans, and boots. Colonial logics depend on a management of who counts as "people" and what counts as "inhabited" and the myth of empty lands; Tom Nook's instance that these islands are all deserted is haunted by these lingering traces of some other inhabitation prior to the game's start.Ā
Okay, so you might be asking what does this all mean and why should we care? Let's talk about both the game's popularity and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which contextualized its release (and continues to shape daily life). Animal Crossing: New Horizons has not only received overwhelmingly positive critical reception, but is one of the best selling games both for the Switch console and the Animal Crossing series. According to freelance journalist Imad Khan's New York Times article "Why Animal Crossing Is the Game for the Coronavirus Moment," the game's appeal centers in its function as an escape to an "island paradise where bags of money fall out of trees and a talking raccoon can approve you for a mortgage". Khan quotes Dr. Ramzan (a professor of game narrative at Glasgow Caledonian University) who refers to it as "the universe youāve always wanted, but canāt get." Given the significantly decreased mobility and connection that has accompanied social distancing, as well as the increased stress and heightened inequality which have accompanied COVID-19, this probably isnāt particularly surprising. It makes sense that a cute, low-stress video game would be a valuable form of escapism.
Mobility is a particularly fraught discourse in this context: on the one hand, concerns surrounding containment/immobility are heightened in the context of neoliberalism and within colonial societies, which depend upon discourses of individualism and independence to demarcate the āfreedomā which comes from capitalist economies. At the same time, the desire for things like connection/community, movement, and spatial autonomy/sovereignty are not inherently colonial, even as colonialist logics frequently position colonial/capitalist/neoliberal expansion as the solution. Animal Crossing is heavily situated within this entanglement, simultaneously offering a very real form of connection (and even protest) for many people while also implicitly speaking to latent beliefs that colonization is a legitimate form of mobility and escapism. To say that AC:NH is the universe weāve always wanted but canāt get is to refuse to engage with the inherent contradictions of neoliberalism and reafirm the notion that colonial capitalist worlds are worth wanting; that the fantasy of individual wealth and success through destructive extraction and market freedom, when obtainable, is good.
None of this is to say that playing AC:NH is the same as colonization, because of course it isn't. However, the colonial undertones of the game reflect the pervasiveness of colonial logics and desires in our daily lives, subsequently further normalizing them. Journalist Kazuma Hashimoto, for example, emphasizes the importance of contextualizing AC:NH's colonial undertones within Japanese Colonialism in "Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Japanese Colonialism". As Hashimoto argues, "I am only asking that people familiarize themselves with Japanese colonialism and why something as innocuous as discovering a deserted island can be read as colonialism ā especially within the context of a Japanese game".
Inattentiveness to the more subdued, invisibilized manifestations of violence facilitates their internalization and acceptance; educating ourselves and paying attention to and challenging places where we feel comfortable with these kinds of escapist fantasies is an important exercise in critical thinking which can help us to continue to refuse their real life manifestations.Ā
#acnh#animal crossing#post-colonial theory#essay#media analysis#popular culture studies#one thing i dont go into here but which IS relevant to keep in mind is the role real life colonialism & imperialism plays in the production#of basically all technology/electronics (the reason i don't is bc i think it kind of becomes a bland 'there is no ethical consumption under#late capitalism take' which like *is* still important to keep in mindĀ i just dont have anything useful to add or analyze there#long post#anyways as always pls share your thoughts!

The people who have only played ACNH and only met the NH Tom Nook and say that he's a "greedy capitalist pig" have no notion of how spoiled they are, like do you have any idea how fucked up is in the older games when you told him "no" to a house update and like a typical empath he just says "I know that you won't be happy" AND UPDATES THAT SHIT ANYWAYS?!
