decided to do an island-design challenge and i instantly messed up(kinda, only a little)🌝⛺️

🌼first big oopsie was def being too impatient! i did not spend enough time grinding for nookmiles and unlocking things from the huge cataloge on the original island! i didnt get cooking and its buggin me!! (one fruit at a time is so 1.0 lol), also didnt get the camera update and i really miss that too..

🌼another thing - its very hard to keep the villagers tents! you might need to keep your game on one of those very first days for the entire time you are decorating if this is your goal!? it was my goal at first but i instantly messed up and ofc the placement of my villager homes, that were meant to be for tents, is now where their houses are placed and i cant move them..

(Small side-note but i actually thought of a way that you can maybe cheat this system! maybe by making your terraforming/waterscaping character into the second character on the new island and just never playing the original rep, never upgrading the resident rep from a tent to a house and kinda putting the “story” on halt? you might be able to keep the tents and still progress and play daily?!? just a thought tho i would have to test it i guess)

🌼something i did spend a lot of time doing while my character was still on the first island was upgrade my house! this was not at all needed bc you can just do that on the new island with tom nook(the only reason to do it on the first island would be to fill your storage with things from that island, something i 100% could have done but didnt bother to so lol)

🌼i also spent my hard earned nook miles on the in-game pathing only to find out that you can just get that from the nookmiles shop on the new island(had no idea, and also dont really see how i could have known so im not mad about it) all the hair things are also available on the new island btw..

🌼I decided to keep all my custom codes from the original island bc i thought it would be too much work to get all the new ones and then change them all back once i moved the new character away, but honestly i should have done that🥲 you can get ables on the new island but i really dont want to, it doesnt go with the look u know.. i love the codes i have but i’ve now used them on two islands so im sad i cant get new ones👀

this isn't like, meant in a negative way I just want to keep playing acnh but run out of ideas, but you said you'd been playing every day since launch. what do you Do in there once you've completed everything

Good question! On busy days I'm chatting with my villagers, doing some rounds and maybe getting some coffee at The Roost. Not much, sometimes just a few minutes. On days (usually evenings actually) where I feel like playing more I like to vibe in the game taking in the environment, listening to the hourly music (especially amazing with good headphones) and doing some light decorating. Sometimes I do some gyroid projects in HHP too. Just a bunch of stuff that puts me in a nice mood :)

It's a bit harder to vibe in the game when I feel like it's too much of a mess though so I look forward to start from scratch making something simple and geared towards daily gameplay. I also love collecting stuff so I'm looking forward to filling out my critterpedia again. And watching my island slowly develop from day to day. So still creating my own fun but with some tangible goals.

Animal Crossing memories, part 2

It's brand new day, time to get back to it! I'm going to toss in some of my favourite ACNH screenshots between the paragraphs. Stuff that I wasn't able to fit in previously, most of it silly, some pretty. They don't have anything to do with what I have to say, but I'd like to share them somewhere & I don't want this post to be a plain wall of text either. Let's go!

So what is my overall opinion on the game? I think it's awesome. Like I mentioned in my previous post, I didn't get around to experience any of the previous AC instalments, so I have no way to compare. I know that some of the faithful fans of the series aren't necessarily thrilled with New Horizons & looking at their criticisms, they raise good points! Personally I enjoy the game for what it is: there's no wrong way to play it and there is no pressure to do it one way or another. I keep coming back to the Sims and Minecraft for the exact same reasons.

When I opened New Horizons on my birthday this year, I finally took the time to check out all of the features they added over 2 years ago. Better late than never I say! They were met with a mixture of excitement and disappointment, haha. Mostly that first one, thankfully. Cyrus' customisation workshop is hands down one of the best things ever - you no longer have to hunt down your desired item variations on Nookazon or beg your friends for them. There are so, so many new objects in the game. Some of the prices were reduced. You can customise your home inside and outside as well as expand your storage. Froggy chair is back!

Let me tell you though, I was appalled when I found out that bulk crafting wasn't implemented. Why, Nintendo. Why! I know they're still adding minor patches to the game, but I'm afraid it's safe to assume that we're never going to get that at this point. I understand why it wouldn't apply to big items, but fish bait? Come on. We can already buy stuff in bulk. Same thing applies to Nook Miles tickets, why the heck can't we print several at the time? Or fly from one mystery island to another, skipping the airport? Eugh. I heard that Nintendo is notorious for not taking the voices of their fanbase into consideration, so I believe we're stuck forever with these pesky mechanics!

But I don't want to be a negative Nancy. I will stand by my words: the game is awesome. I'm thankful for what we got! I believe New Horizons truly deserved its success and I hope the next instalment in the series will receive a warm welcome just like this one. Unlike some players, I don't think another major update is necessary. Of course it would be great, though the game feels finished to me - with all the events, items, recipes, customisation options, it's a solid title. I can safely say it's one of my favourites as far as all games go.

Now, with all that said, what does the future hold for my little island of Pan? Well... the days of Pan are numbered. After some back and forth, I decided it's time to delete my save file and start fresh. I will take a hot minute to explain why (so bear with me if you're curious), but first I want to say why it was a tough choice. Pan is nearly dang perfect for me. Great layout, long pier, blue airport, oranges as my native fruit and windflowers as native.. flowers! I have quite a few items & board drawings that I hold very dear because they came from friends. I like all of my villagers a lot. I love how the island looks. I have so many memories. After all, it's my true and only Pan.

What's wrong, then?! A lot, man. A lot. Even though I'm proud of how the island looks, it's not fun to play on and that alone is a big deal breaker for me. I (mostly) finished it around the time when heavily-terraformed and decorated islands were all the rage & unfortunately developed that unhealthy mindset of comparing myself to all those much more skilled players. For whatever reason, I wanted to live up to somebody else's standards. Not anymore! My next keyword would be "less": less decorations, less flowers, less trees, less cliffs, less waterfalls. (Seriously. They are so frickin' loud)

Admittedly, Pan doesn't have nearly as much clutter as some other islands do, but it's still a problem in many different ways. The whole central part lags and it drives me nuts every time. I'm pretty much confined to walking on paths as there isn't a lot of open space anymore. Said custom paths flicker a lot. Performing some of the daily tasks can be difficult. Wanna catch a fish? There ain't no space. Shoot down an airdrop? Nope, no space. Build a Snowboy without the snowball getting obliterated 10 times in a row? No. Space.

I know there's always an option to declutter, remodel or flatten and start over - I did these and considered them again! But each and every one seems so daunting now. This brings me to my next point: I miss so many things from the early stages of the game. The spacious, natural feeling of a brand new island. Darting around the place like there's no tomorrow. Slowly building everything from scratch, making your own way through it all. Catching all the critters, searching for fossils, getting scammed by Jolly Redd. Heck, even paying off all the effing debt!

I'm always a strong advocate for a second playthrough. It's true that I love jumping into games with as little knowledge about them as possible, hardly anything can replace that fresh, first experience! But it's so much fun to rediscover too. I pay a lot more attention to detail whenever I replay because I already know the main story and I'm ready to take in all of the smaller things. There is no real story in Animal Crossing, just progress and I hope to take it a little at a time. When the game came out, I had a bit of an unhealthy obsession with it, haha. (Who didn't, though?)

I never visited any of the famed treasure islands, but I did time travel quite a bit. Both things can be absolutely okay if they're exactly what you're looking for. Not sure if that was the right choice for me. I played for hours on end, grinding so hard that I think I just burned myself out much sooner that I wanted to. I couldn't bring myself to touch New Horizons for a long time after that. I believe many other players experienced something similar. That and also all the dramas that inevitably erupted with an introduction of so many new players to the AC community. The game kind of faded into obscurity after its prime. Folks were collectively tired.

Many aspects of that initial hullabaloo were great, not gonna lie! Jumping on the bandwagon, sharing our adventures, making memes. Still, it feels nice to come back after it all subsided - to a game that is, after all, supposed to be relaxing and mellow. I've mellowed down over the years too. Not only that, but I also don't feel the need to rush through it as there is no fear of spoilers anymore, I already know all the unlocks, I know what happens in the game. I'm looking forward to getting back into it with a fresh, blank canvas to have fun on and a more open mind.

This little fictional land meant so much to me (and I can't even fully explain why I get so attached to stuff like that). I even don't know why I just spent so much time talking about Animal Crossing. Perhaps it's easier for me to talk about games, cartoons and fictional characters than my personal life? It is easier for sure!

Negatives:

I got a little giddy over the fact I know why 良かっ�� is 良かった now. いい is good, and 良い is its older form, which gets hit with all of the adjective stem changes that いい normally would. So the て form is 良くて, the negative is 良くない, and the past tense is 良かった. It's used in several ways ("Thank goodness", "What a relief", stuff like that) but I LOVE knowing why things are the way they are heheh.

I ALSO understand why ではない is ではない:

で = te form of だ

は is a topic marker as always, marking "= pen" as the topic

ない is an adjective describing the state of non-being

Also shoutout to ichidan verbs. Godan verbs are easy too (you literally just changed the -u stem to an -a stem, i think for う it becomes わ. So like. 買う, 買って, 買った, 買わない) but I love that you just. Boom, 出来ない (I learned 出来る in Anki today heheh), bam, 食べない, pow. I know four whole verb forms now y'all 😤😤😤

And now I know how to say "I was eating spaghetti"—私がスパゲッティを食べていた。—which is different from "I ate spaghetti"—私がスパゲッティを食べた。Turns out いる is also an ichidan verb and I'm blowing it a little kiss.

Keeping my fashion dreamer rambles in this thread. It has the potential to get kind of long so I'm gonna give it a special tag so people who don't care can blacklist it

First impressions on the game from someone who has never played Style Savvy but wanted to as a child:

-very short game. I beat it in a few hours.

-there isn't really a story at all. You play as a fashion influencer in some kind of virtual world

-for a game about designing clothes and making outfits, it's kind of sad that you can only change colors and not patterns

-the art style is gorgeous

-gender locking /neg

-WHY is the credits scene 12 MINUTES LONG and UNSKIPPABLE

-a very casual game

-lots of different clothes but not a lot of customization. It does have an HSV color picker so that's nice!

-ngl I think ACNH offers more detailed customization but far less clothing options overall. It also has a bigger community by far.

-all in all I like it so far but it has its Quirks

Anyway I should really make some collections bc like. Not enough type B/masc model clothes or a lot of more masculine leaning type A/fem model clothes. I'm thinking maybe a pride collection and then something Splatoon inspired? I'll need to unlock more clothes first though

Just got fashion dreamer the other day... not what I expected but I am easily entertained. Wish the clothes weren't genderlocked though. You can put facial hair on the feminine model but the masculine one can't wear skirts?? Make it make sense

I think about Orville a lot... He's such a sweetheart but it's unfair to him that Nintendo made him the clearest example of their poor design decisions. I wish we could travel through a menu instead of endless dialogue that has to start over from the beginning if you make a mistake. Then maybe the dialogue with him could be made into something pleasant and less like a chore

The Problem with New Horizons’ villager mechanics

So in new leaf it wasn’t even possible to invite a random camper when you already had the full 10 so i agree that this is an improvement!! But NH definitely falls short in a lot of ways in terms of annoying villager RNG. That said, the most dedicated players will always find a way around it and there’s little Nintendo can do, despite the fact that this is clearly not the way they want their game to be played

Resetting to get a camper to say someone specific is just one of those things that wasn’t intended, but technically is possible. similar to using NMT after NMT until you find a specific villager, especially with cats. Nintendo intended us to go through the dialogue, see the one villager the random camper wants to replace, assess the trade-off as it’s given to you then accept or decline. That in itself wouldn’t take too long, but it could come with losing a beloved villager or missing out on a dreamie because of this.

They intended you to use a few, maybe like 10 nook miles tickets that you’ve redeemed yourself, see who you meet and invite someone you like the vibe of. But there’s a good chance you can go for like 100 tickets without seeing someone you would even consider. Don’t even get me started on the mystery island RNG, god knows why they did it like that. If anyone’s unfamiliar with how all that works I can explain it to you but the gist is, some villager species are a lot rarer to find on NMT islands than others.

But the game doesn’t save during dialogue, so if you’ve got the time you’ll always be able to use a random camper to kick out whoever you want eventually, and get the final say on who stays and who goes. and if you have enough tickets you can time travel, keep a plot open and go to like 1000 or even more islands to find the specific cat you want. And if it’s possible without hacks, the majority of players are absolutely going to do it so they have more choice over their gameplay experience and can get their dreamies without paying real money for amiibo. Like if I hadn’t been so lucky with Raymond that one time I probably would’ve caved and tried to hunt for him eventually. Cats being so rare is actually one of the main factors that caused all the Raymond drama last year - so many players wanted him, no one could find him through tickets so they turned to trading sites. As we all know from the Raymond situation, people will do whatever it takes within the game, trading ridiculous amounts of bells/NMT to get the villager they want, even if it’s not at all how Nintendo wanted/predicted their game would be played.

I’m not even getting into the move-in queue here. I don’t know enough about it (I doubt anyone does tbh) to be able to talk about the issues surrounding it with enough confidence. It is definitely another problem though, so if you’re curious let me know and I can try and explain all that is known about the move-in queue that dictates who moves in when you autofill a plot.

Don’t get me wrong, this game did so many things right and took some amazing steps to being able to have more control over your town - I will constantly gush about how much I love it but it goes without saying that the mechanics and villager RNG work in less than convenient ways and need some improvement. But we have to cut Nintendo some slack because new horizons was so different than anything they’ve attempted before with an ac game- this is the first animal crossing game with villager hunting, swapping out villagers using random campers, literally having any control at all over your villager lineup without amiibo. Ultimately, although it may take a lot of patience, you decide who stays and who goes and that’s never really been a thing in a mainline AC game before. NH has introduced so much amazing stuff and I’m sure they’ll listen to our feedback and do even better with the mechanics next time. This is not meant to be an attack on Nintendo or anyone in the community, just my thoughts on the game and some of its mechanics
