Day 2
Today's Objectives:
Kana Practice: 5 minutes
Anki: 10 new, 0 review
Grammar: 3 videos
Active Immersion: Something came up so I couldn't get around to it :( I'll be watching mozuku's ACNH tutorials w/o subtitles as listening practice
Not much to say other than WHY did I study this early, this was stupid, don't be like me start studying when you feel like a person. I should've used the early morning for passive immersion. Self-study is an adventure and I am merely along for the ride.
Kana Practice
Usually I wouldn't have anything to say with kana practice, but this is just a mental note for myself not to do it this early in the morning. My issue wasn't retention it was just a lot of really silly minor typing errors and missing dakuten LMFAO.
Anki
So...I couldn't trust my memory of 兄 being older brother and said that どれ was "where" (which is どこ) instead of "which". Again, probably just the fact that I decided to study stupid early in the morning. Don't be like me.
Grammar
Nothing really of note today! Here are my notes, though. I think I'm going to start incorporating 5 minutes of て-form practice into my dailies.
Summary
Overall, having less time for immersion aside (again I'll be making up for it with listening practice so I'll still be getting some in just not with Precure), I did pretty well today I think! :) Uh, in the future I will NOT be studying at the buttcrack of dawn LMFAO. Lesson learned.

Day 1 (Again)
Today's Objectives:
Kana Practice: 5 minutes
Anki: 10 new, 0 reviews
Grammar: 3 videos
Active Immersion: 1 episode (subtitle tutor method)
Anki
Yeah, so the kana site I'm using sadly doesn't offer stats like the one I used to does. This is fine with me, though, as kana isn't really my focus. That's more just for fun than anything at this point—hiragana and katakana are ingrained in the crevices of my brain. I'm not even having trouble with my old nemeses, マ and ム, so, uh, character development.
Anyway, here are my Anki stats for today (they're not exciting because this is a new deck, and are even less so because I knew 9 out of the 10 words already).
I'm trying out the FSRS feature so we'll see how that goes.
The only word I didn't know today was 勉強. It was actually kind of a jumpscare because it was surrounded by like. 私, あなた, 日本語, and stuff like that. Things I knew before I even started the deck. XD So it was kind of weird getting hit with Completely Unfamiliar Kanji. I don't even know if I'd seen that in Core 2.3k LMFAO. Anyway.
Grammar
Once again, going over things I already knew. が is the Japanese equivalent of 42 (i.e., the answer to life, the universe, and everything), the null symbol is precious to me, the difference between は and が is actually deceptively easy, stuff like that. I actually typed this before even typing out the new notes lol.
Anyway, here is a link to the PDF of my notes for today (I spent way too long trying to figure out how I wanted to do this before remembering that print to PDF today.
Immersion
I rolled a one on the die today and honestly I'm super tired so I can live with that.
So last time I did this I actually started mining a bit early. I don't think I added words of the day (cba to check whoops) but if I did, I'm not doing that today! Not until after I'm done with Kaishi. :P If I ever have anything notable to add re: immersion, I'll add it here in the future, but there probably won't be so this section will likely be omitted in the future. (Almost forgot to update AniList. Y'all I'm a mess /lh)
Summary: Yeah, not much today. Whoops. XD

We are so back
A small accountability post for myself
This is, as mentioned, more for myself than anything, but if you read it then thanks.
So I had a small (😬) mental breakdown in April and, uh, needless to say I have not been actively practicing my JP since then. I won't go into any detail because I don't know who'll see this, but TL;DR, my mental health takes priority over my JP learning, and I did not have the resources (i.e., time or energy) to continue my learning. I'm holding myself fully accountable for the months that I went without doing anything at all.
So, uh, here we are. I have a new deck, a new doc for my Cure Dolly notes, a new kana site, but pretty much the same routine. I'll be posting here for the sake of accountability in the same format as I was posting before, though it may be less extensive some days—especially on the first days because I'm rehashing things I already know.
I'll be uploading:
My Anki stats for the day
My grammar notes
My AniList account (not necessarily in posts, but it'll always be in my pinned)
So, uh, yeah! We'll see how this goes. Day 1 starts today so wish me luck. 🫡

Haven't posted here in a while bc I've been busy, but I just read most of the sentence 「同じ顔のMiiを2人さがせ!」 on my own (the only part I missed was さがせ but I was able to figure that out through context clues because I'm watching a Japanese Wii Play TAS) and considering how hard I was working before it got to be a little too much, I'm SO proud of myself actually. Can't BELIEVE I knew most of this AND I read it right.
(It's "Find two Miis with the same face!" btw)

sometimes i'm really glad that i love learning grammar and am really determined to learn JP bc this was a Time to get through
btw the full sentence is アリスは空っぽの瓶でも下へ落としては悪いと思った。
also hi i chose to stop doing daily posts bc holding myself to that while managing my illness and trying to be a person and doing my lessons and doing other things like D&D is hard but i will still post about my journey!!
anyway, about these notes: they aren't even that long but i needed to do that breakdown for myself lol
shoutout to my bestie ∅ i love zero pronouns bc i wish that was me i want no pronouns and to be Void
but jokes aside i don't always write them out like this but i needed to understand the sentence. i've since put parentheses in the translation where the zero pronouns would be
#; citrijp#; shenanigans#langblog#langblr#language learning#japanese langblr#learning japanese#languages#i hope this is still interesting i'm so sorry that i wasn't able to keep up#idk why i'm apologizing i'm doing this for myself#but maybe i'll post like weekly goals and recaps and stuff :}#also i figured out how to add furigana to my notes#so what i do is#if it's a word that hasn't popped up in lessons OR in anki#i do furigana on it ONCE#bc it's easier than trying to type out the hiragana every time#i never add furigana to the same word more than once it's LITERALLY only meant to save time

learning about Japanese grammar has weirdly helped me understand parts of English grammar. for example: anything can be an adjective if you're not a coward
#; shenanigans#langblr#japanese langblr#learning japanese#“hat-wearing” is an adjective for example#which like. duh. but idt i ever thought of it as one#hours later edit: and smth like “who-sang”#as in “the person who sang”#“who sang” is an adjective describing the person if you're not a COWARD

hi sorry for not doing days 9 and 10, it's been. a really hellish few days. power went out last night into this afternoon and i've been really stressed and fatigued. i'll be doing day 11 tomorrow but kinda treating it as day 9. i did anki both days at the very least (!!), but i've reduced my new cards per day for core 2.3k to 10 definitively. so that'll look different in the objectives for tomorrow.
#; shenanigans#trying to learn a language when ill is really hard but i'm goddamn determined to do it

Heads up to not use Duolingo or to cease using it
In December 2023 they laid off a huge percentage of their translation teams, replacing them with ai and having the remaining members review the ai translations to make sure the translations are “acceptable” (Note how they use the world acceptable and not accurate)
Link to the tweet that informed me of this:
https://x.com/rahll/status/1744234385891594380?s=46&t=a5vK0RLlkgqk-CTqc0Gvvw
If you’re a current user prepare for an uptick in translations errors as I’ve already seen people in the comments say they’ve noticed
