Common Mistakes in Acne Treatment (And How to Avoid Them)
Avoid the most common acne treatment mistakes that could worsen your skin. Learn practical tips to optimize your routine and achieve clearer, healthier skin.
Acne is a universal challenge that affects people of all ages, but the path to clear skin often involves trial and error. With so much conflicting advice, it’s easy to make mistakes that hinder progress. At Nakery Beauty, we believe that treating acne doesn’t have to feel like an uphill battle. By avoiding common missteps and embracing targeted, effective solutions, you can unlock the radiant, healthy skin you deserve.
In this guide, we’ll dive into the most common mistakes in acne treatment and how to avoid them—empowering you with knowledge, confidence, and actionable tips to care for your skin.
Overwashing Your Skin
The MistakeMany people believe that washing their face frequently will keep acne at bay. However, overwashing does more harm than good. It strips the skin of its natural oils, which are essential for maintaining a healthy skin barrier. This triggers the sebaceous glands to overproduce oil in an attempt to compensate for the dryness. The excess oil can clog pores, leading to even more breakouts. Overwashing can also cause irritation, redness, and sensitivity, further aggravating acne-prone skin.
How to Avoid ItTo maintain a healthy balance, stick to cleansing your face twice a day—once in the morning to remove sweat and oils produced overnight and once in the evening to wash away dirt, makeup, and environmental pollutants. Using a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser is crucial. Nakery Beauty’s Cleansers are specially formulated to effectively remove impurities without disrupting your skin’s natural balance. If you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, opt for a cleanser infused with calming botanicals to soothe irritation.
Pro TipAfter cleansing, always replenish your skin barrier with a hydrating product to lock in moisture. Don’t forget other areas of your skin—your lips and body also need care. Consider adding Nakery Beauty’s Lip Care products to keep your lips soft and hydrated, and extend your routine with effective Body Care to prevent dryness in areas prone to irritation.
By keeping your routine gentle yet effective, you can reduce the risk of over-cleansing while promoting clear, radiant skin.
Relying Solely on Spot Treatments
The MistakeWhile Spot Treatment products are effective at reducing inflammation for individual pimples, relying solely on them won’t address the underlying causes of acne. This approach often overlooks the importance of treating the entire skin to prevent future breakouts.
How to Avoid ItAdopt a comprehensive routine that includes cleansing, exfoliation, hydration, and targeted treatments. Start with a gentle cleanser to remove impurities, followed by Nakery Beauty’s Serums, which deliver potent, active ingredients to reduce inflammation, fade blemishes, and prevent new acne from forming. Pair this with nourishing products like Nakery Beauty’s Body Care and Lip Care essentials to ensure that both your skin and lips remain hydrated, healthy, and radiant throughout your acne treatment journey.
Misunderstanding "Purging" vs. Breakouts
The MistakeStarting new skincare products can sometimes trigger a temporary increase in breakouts, known as purging. This is often mistaken for irritation, leading many to abandon products that might actually work.
How to Avoid ItUnderstand the difference: Purging usually happens in areas where you already experience breakouts and subsides within 4–6 weeks. Irritation, on the other hand, causes redness, dryness, or breakouts in new areas. If irritation occurs, reassess your routine and opt for gentle yet effective formulations. Nakery Beauty’s Skin Treatment products are designed to calm and balance your skin during this transition. To fully support your journey, consider extending care to other areas like Body Care or hydrating your lips with Lip Care for a holistic skincare routine.
Ignoring Post-Acne Care
The MistakeMany people focus solely on clearing active acne but neglect to address the scars and hyperpigmentation that remain. These post-acne marks can linger for months, affecting your skin's overall radiance and tone.
How to Avoid ItIncorporate Brightening treatments and products specifically designed to promote skin renewal. Ingredients like niacinamide and vitamin C are powerful allies in fading dark spots and improving skin clarity. Additionally, Nakery Beauty’s range of Collagen-boosting products can accelerate skin repair and enhance resilience. These formulas work to reduce the appearance of scars while revitalizing your skin’s natural glow. With consistent use, you’ll see a smoother, more even complexion over time, helping you feel confident and radiant.
Using Unsuitable Makeup Products
The MistakeUsing heavy, pore-clogging foundations can worsen acne, especially when not removed properly at the end of the day. This can lead to buildup of makeup, dirt, and oil that clog pores and aggravate existing breakouts.
How to Avoid ItTo prevent this, choose non-comedogenic makeup products like Nakery Beauty’s Foundation, which is specially formulated to enhance your natural beauty without contributing to acne or skin irritation. Our foundation provides full coverage while allowing your skin to breathe, helping you maintain a flawless look without clogging pores. Always follow up with a high-quality Cleanser from Nakery Beauty to ensure all traces of makeup and impurities are completely removed. A proper cleansing routine is key to clear, radiant skin, setting a solid foundation for the next step in your skincare routine.
Neglecting Your Neck and Body
The MistakeMany skincare routines focus exclusively on the face, leaving the neck, chest, and back untreated. These areas are just as prone to acne, irritation, and dryness, and they deserve the same level of attention and care. Ignoring your body’s skincare can lead to breakouts in areas that are often harder to treat, and a lack of hydration can result in dry, rough patches of skin.
How to Avoid ItTo achieve clear, smooth skin from head to toe, extend your routine to include your neck, chest, back, and arms. Nakery Beauty’s Body Wash is a luxurious, sulfate-free cleanser that gently removes impurities without stripping the skin. For more targeted care, try our Bodycare Bundles, designed to cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate. These bundles address body breakouts while keeping the skin soft and rejuvenated, ensuring your skin looks radiant and feels healthy all over. Don’t forget that caring for your body is just as important as caring for your face.
Overlooking Lifestyle Factors
The MistakeTreating acne without considering the impact of diet, stress, and sleep often leads to incomplete results. It’s not just about using the right skincare products; your overall lifestyle plays a significant role in maintaining clear skin. Foods high in sugar and dairy can cause inflammation and spike insulin levels, which in turn may trigger more acne breakouts. Chronic stress releases cortisol, a hormone that can increase oil production, while sleep deprivation prevents your skin from repairing itself properly.
How to Avoid ItAdopting a holistic approach to skincare means addressing lifestyle factors like stress management, quality sleep, and a balanced diet. Managing your stress with activities like yoga, meditation, or simply taking time for self-care can have a positive impact on your skin’s health. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night to allow your body and skin to rejuvenate. Nourish your skin from the inside out by consuming a diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins that promote skin health. Additionally, avoid sugary drinks that can spike insulin and worsen acne.
Pro Tip: Stay hydrated with water, herbal teas, or antioxidant-rich beverages to support your skin’s natural glow. Lifestyle changes like these, paired with the right skincare, can work together to keep your complexion clear, glowing, and healthy.
Skipping Sunscreen
The MistakeSome people believe sunscreen can cause acne or that it’s unnecessary when dealing with breakouts. However, skipping sunscreen can lead to long-term skin damage, hyperpigmentation, and even worsen acne scars. Sun exposure can trigger inflammation, making your acne worse and prolonging the healing process.
How to Avoid ItUsing a non-comedogenic, broad-spectrum sunscreen every day is essential in any skincare routine, even for acne-prone skin. Look for formulas that won't clog pores and are designed to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Additionally, pairing your sunscreen with Nakery Beauty's Tanning products can help you achieve a glowing, sun-kissed look without the harmful effects of UV exposure. Protecting your skin from the sun’s damaging rays is key to preventing dark spots and maintaining a healthy, radiant complexion in the long run.
Not Moisturizing After Acne Treatments
The MistakeAcne treatments often contain drying agents like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, which can strip the skin of its natural moisture. Skipping a moisturizer after applying these treatments can lead to irritation, excessive dryness, and a compromised skin barrier, which may worsen acne.
How to Avoid ItAlways follow acne treatments with a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer to restore hydration and protect the skin. Nakery Beauty’s Body Butters are the perfect solution, providing deep hydration without clogging pores. These luxurious formulations nourish and soothe, helping to restore your skin's natural moisture balance. Whether you're targeting your face or body, using a moisturizing treatment after acne care helps promote healing and prevent further breakouts. Your skincare routine should balance treatment and hydration to keep your skin feeling comfortable, healthy, and glowing.
Using Too Many Active Ingredients
The MistakeCombining multiple active ingredients like retinol, AHAs, and salicylic acid can overwhelm your skin, leading to irritation, dryness, and even more breakouts. When used in excess or without proper layering, these potent ingredients can strip the skin’s protective barrier, causing sensitivity and further disrupting your skin’s natural balance.
How to Avoid ItSimplify your routine by introducing active ingredients gradually. Start with one product containing a key ingredient and allow your skin to adjust before adding another. Nakery Beauty’s curated Skincare Bundles are designed with a harmonious selection of products that work together to treat and support your skin’s needs. These thoughtfully paired treatments ensure you’re not overloading your skin with too many actives at once. Whether you’re looking to target acne, brighten, or boost collagen, these bundles offer effective solutions that are gentle yet powerful, delivering real, lasting results without overwhelming your skin.
Ignoring Professional Treatments
The MistakeDIY skincare can only go so far. While at-home treatments are effective for many, ignoring professional advice and treatments can lead to prolonged acne struggles. Without expert guidance, you may miss underlying issues or use products that don't suit your skin type, delaying progress and exacerbating breakouts.
How to Avoid ItConsult with a dermatologist or esthetician to address stubborn acne and receive a personalized treatment plan. Professional skincare treatments can effectively target deeper concerns like cystic acne or severe scarring. Complement these treatments with Nakery Beauty’s innovative Special Care products, designed to maintain your results and support skin health at home for lasting clarity and radiance.
Using Dirty Pillowcases and Towels
The MistakeBacteria, oils, and dead skin cells on pillowcases and towels can transfer to your skin, causing breakouts. Many of us focus on the products we apply to our faces but forget that the fabrics we come in contact with daily, like pillowcases and towels, can contribute to acne. Old pillowcases harbor bacteria, sweat, and dirt that build up over time, potentially leading to clogged pores and inflammation. Similarly, using a towel that's been sitting damp in the bathroom for a while can introduce moisture and bacteria that could irritate the skin.
How to Avoid ItTo ensure you’re not accidentally sabotaging your skincare routine, change your pillowcase every few days. Opt for a fresh pillowcase made from soft materials like cotton or silk, which are gentler on the skin and less likely to cause friction or irritate active breakouts. Silk pillowcases, in particular, are beneficial because they reduce the amount of bacteria that accumulate compared to other fabrics. Additionally, keep your face towels clean and dry. A good practice is to reserve a towel specifically for your face and wash it regularly to avoid transferring oils from other areas of your body.
Using clean linens is just one part of the equation—don’t forget to stick to a consistent skincare routine as well. If you're using acne treatments, such as Skin Treatments or Spot Treatment, remember that the rest of your daily habits, including your pillowcase and towel hygiene, can support or hinder progress.
Inconsistent Skincare Habits
The MistakeSkipping steps in your skincare routine or switching products too frequently can disrupt progress and aggravate your skin. Patience is essential when treating acne, but it’s easy to get discouraged when results don’t appear overnight. Constantly changing products or omitting certain steps can disrupt the balance your skin needs to heal.
How to Avoid ItCommit to a consistent skincare regimen and give products time to work—typically 6–12 weeks. Avoid hopping from one trendy product to another without giving your current routine a fair chance. Nakery Beauty’s all-in-one Bodycare bundles and Skincare bundles make it easy to stick to a routine that delivers results. Each bundle is carefully curated with the most effective, high-quality products, such as Cleansers, Serums, and Collagen-boosting solutions, to ensure a seamless, results-driven approach. Sticking to your regimen can help you see the full potential of the active ingredients while boosting your skin’s health over time.
Focusing Only on Quick Fixes
The MistakeMany seek instant results, leading to frustration when acne doesn’t disappear overnight. With the vast amount of acne treatments available, it can be tempting to try multiple products in an attempt to speed up the process. However, acne treatments that promise quick fixes may be harsh on the skin or fail to address underlying issues, leading to further breakouts.
How to Avoid ItPatience is key when it comes to acne treatment. While some treatments, like Nakery Beauty’s Lifting and Brightening products, offer immediate benefits, others take time to show lasting results. Trust the process and prioritize long-term skin health over quick fixes. Invest in products that nourish your skin, such as Body Butters, that help restore your skin’s natural balance. It’s important to keep in mind that sustainable improvements are often the result of consistent care.
Forgetting Self-Care
The MistakeStress and neglecting self-care can take a toll on your skin, causing hormonal fluctuations that lead to acne. High levels of stress not only impact your mood and well-being, but they can also trigger breakouts by increasing cortisol levels, which, in turn, stimulates oil production in your skin. Skipping self-care rituals can worsen this cycle.
How to Avoid ItDedicate time to pampering yourself. Treat your skin and body with Nakery Beauty’s luxurious Lifting + Tightening products, which not only enhance your skin but also offer a moment of indulgence. By incorporating Lip Care, Hair Care, and moisturizing rituals into your routine, you support your skin’s natural healing process. Taking time for self-care is an essential part of acne treatment that goes beyond the surface—it nurtures both your skin and your confidence. So, take a break, relax, and let your beauty shine through.

Was in the elevator with an oddly familiar face that I was positive I hadn’t seen before until he spoke and then looked at his badge and turned out he’s the tech guy I see relatively frequently it’s just the first time I’ve seen him where he wasn’t wearing a mask and the solidarity I felt at realizing we’re both bearers of the curse that everyone else swears isn’t a curse (both in our late twenties but are regularly mistaken as teenagers due to baby face and acne)
#my acne is clearing up actually#all I did was say fuck it and start just washing my face with soap twice a day#funny how that works ! it’s almost like every acne cream is lying!#I don’t mind having acne though I think it’s actually cute on people#anyway can’t do much about the baby face even my brother with a full beard had baby face#p
