Siegfried: ‘You know he’s got seven gates?! Seven!’

I just love how domestic they are, Audrey knows Biggins will be one of Siegfried's pet peeves to moan about, and she just knows he will tell everyone in the house about the Seven Gates incident 🤣 And Siegfried delivers his tale as soon as he has the opportunity to. 'Seven!'

One of my favourite Siegfried moments this series.

Just a quick thought about the time jump between ACGAS series 5 and series 6

I will probably stay out of discussions here on tumblr because I am still in my five stages of grief

at this very moment I am absolutely not a fan of it for several reasons

one reason being that I love the slow pace of ACGAS and the was they slowly developed the characters from series 1 to series 5. The peeled off layer after layer of Siegfried's grief and gave Audrey the confidence to seek a divorce. We were blessed by being witnesses to that

with a time jump we will lose years of slow burn and character development and for me personally this feels wrong because I'd feel robbed of all the small moments everyone shares, especially Audrey + Siegfried's progress / development

what if nothing has changed between them? Stagnation after 5 years of visible progress? That would be so unrealistic

what if everything has changed between them? 5 years of hoping for the first time he calls her Audrey or another handhold, a hug, a kiss and then we weren't allowed to witness them?

and last (but I might come up with more): it always seemed as if the team did not want to go the same way as the old series and make a time jump and tell the story gradually

there are of course also reason why it is necessary: they might have thought that 3 more years of war related stories could feel repetitive or dragging

they might not have wanted to continue the slow burn between Audrey + Siegfried but also not to speed it up and in order to resolve it they create a gap during which it all happened off screen so that they are now finally ready for one another

another series of Helen being pregnant might have felt too boring

and finally, things I need so this does somehow work for me and doesn't ruin it for me

a proper connection between 5.7 and 6.1 (I have something in mind already) so that we have continuity between these episodes and therefore soften the impact of the time jump

Audrey + Siegfried finally being properly acknowledged and visibly moved forward

if they use flashbacks please only in one episode where it makes sense because that's a tool that should never be overused. If you cannot tell a story without it, then the way you tell your story is wrong.

develop the character in a way that makes sense and from where we have left them. Don't suddenly introduce a girlfriend for Tristan we have never met or some flirt for Siegfried (a time jump should save us from those!!!)

Can we talk about how Siegfried, who is a profoundly emotional being, became a beacon of steadfastness, a quiet presence ready to serve, keeping vigilant, swallowing his own fear so he could be there for her?

How he knew too much about war to offer hollow niceties and false hopes that would strike her down if proven untrue but braced himself to become the unfaltering force that would keep her upright if it came to it?

How he was grateful to Tristan for being the counterpoint to that and staying optimistic because he also knew it was what she needed?

How he crumbled with her when the coast was clear, therefore revealing how much he he had been affected all along, because his own sense of self has long merged with her and if she falls he will hold her up but will be doing so on his knees because her pain is his pain?

CAN WE TALK ABOUT THAT?

ACGAS deleted scene (5x1)

This scene occurs at the 30 minute mark. For anybody who doesn't know, the Channel5 version doesn't include some scenes which do appear on the PBS Masterpiece version. From what I've noticed there's about 5 minutes of extra content per episode!

4.7 Uncle Siegfried & Auntie Audrey

I do enjoy how the Audrey and Gerald relationship has developed because it's exactly what she needed. Audrey needed a relationship away from Skeldale House, something that was solely hers and one that could develop romantically without the added complication of being employee and employer.

As much as I am an Audrey and Siegfried person, I can see how Gerald and Audrey would have a happy life together and Gerald has been equally supportive and kind to Audrey, never pushing too hard and respecting her boundaries.

It's very clear that Audrey and Siegfried care about each other, and their relationship will become romantic. However, in any slow burn love story there are always the people and relationships that help the lovers come out of their shell romantically; before realizing that relationship isn't quite right and the person they actually love was standing in front of them the whole time. I'm happy that we get to see Audrey rekindle this romantic side of her openly with someone because it means she's thinking about what she wants and looking to the future.

I'm probably in the minority with this opinion, but if Siegfried has romantic feelings toward Mrs. Hall, not acting on them over Christmas was definitely the right call.

If he had made a move at that time he would have been taking advantage of her fragile emotional state. He would have shown that he didn't care about her feelings or respect her emotions in any way. He would have been saying that she shouldn't care about her son as long as someone finds her attractive.

By NOT making a move, he's allowing her to have the space that she needs. He's respecting her as a person with feelings and as a mother who is terrified for her child's safety.

Even after she finds out that Edward is alive, it will still take time for her to process her emotions and move past the fear that she had lost her son.

Offering quiet support was the best way for any of the other characters to show their love for Mrs. Hall, and that includes Siegfried.

No romance was the right choice for this episode.
