What is Hardware? What are external and internal hardware?

Hardware is a physical circuit board inside an electronic device. Hardware is generally used to run commands or instructions specified by software.

External and internal hardware

Hardware for computers can be divided into two. Internal hardware is located inside the computer and enables the computer to work. 

External hardware,  on the other hand, is the hardware that increases the user’s experience and is used depending on the need.

Internal hardware

As the name suggests, the motherboard is the most basic hardware of the computer. No computer will work without a motherboard. The motherboard has all the hardware on it and enables them to communicate with each other.

Processor

The processor ( CPU ) is one of the most important hardware of a computer, which performs most of the mathematical operations in the computer, also called the brain of the computer. The processor consists of two parts:

Control unit

Most computers are managed by the control unit ( CU ). The control unit uses a binary decoder to convert pre-coded instructions into timing and control signals. 

Arithmetic Logic Unit

With its English definition  , ALU is the unit of the processor that performs arithmetic and logic operations. This unit is indispensable for all processors, from the simplest to the most advanced. 

RAM

Random Access Memory (RAM) is hardware that provides temporary storage services within the computer. Since it is a randomly accessible memory, the data in it is reset when the computer is turned off and on again.

Hard Disk

It is the storage unit of the computer. It is the hardware where all the programs and files installed in the computer, including the operating system, are stored. Since the Hard Disk is a mechanical disk, the reading and writing speed is also low compared to today’s technology. In addition  , HDD  is also susceptible to physical damage. SSD  disks are more durable and faster storage units.

Display card

The external graphics cards in the computer are hardware similar to the processor. Also known as GPU  ( Graphics Processor Unit ), these hardware are externally plugged into the computer to perform graphical operations. External graphics cards are used in computers that need graphics performance.

If the computer does not have an external graphics card, graphical operations are performed by the graphics unit on the processor. Not all processors may have a graphics unit.

Monitor

The most basic external hardware required to use the computer is the monitor. Without the monitor

 it will be difficult to operate on the computer and nothing can be displayed.

It is preferred by players to play video games more comfortably. It is not mandatory to use, games can be played with keyboard and mouse.

Keyboard

It transmits the inputs to be made by the user to the computer. The keyboard has keys that represent letters, numbers, and some computer commands.

Mouse

It is the user input hardware used to move the cursor on the computer screen. Classic Mice have two buttons and a wheel. The wheel allows pages to be scrolled up and down.

Components that extend functionality

Some hardware can extend the basic functions of computers. Printers  and  scanners  are used to print or scan photos or documents  . 

With portable hard drives, a lot of information can be easily transferred from one computer to another or old files can be archived. Video and sound cards can also be added for multimedia, which may allow connecting more peripherals depending on the computer’s capabilities.

1.) I passed my thesis with my college buddy and subsequently graduated. 3 1/2 months before my graduation last May wasn't easy for me. I remember when one of my groupmates backed off because he wasn't cooperating. So, my college buddy and I decided to finish the thesis without our other groupmate. After several rejections on our paperworks and some technical difficulties on our hardware, we passed the thesis. My buddy and I cried tears of joy and graduated from college with ease.

2.) Football in the summer (not for me though). June-July were exciting because of the World Cup. It was full of surprises. Filled with drama and action. I didn't expect that England equalled their best achievement in the WC since 1990 (par their maiden victory in '66) and France went on to win their second WC after 20 years. The whole tournament was MAGICAL and could rewatch any of the matches anytime.

3.) Miss Universe 2018. I was watching this with my family - all rooting for our country's representative, Catriona Gray except for my dad who rooted for Miss Vietnam H'hen Nie (sorry Dad, you lost). That famous slow-mo twirl, that walk, that final 3 answer that goes like this: "...If I could teach also people to be grateful, we could have an amazing world where negativity could not grow and foster..." Everything about her is just... stunning! I remember when the host announced that the Philippines won (no mistake at all), my mom, my nephew and I shouted for joy. The whole nation was proud of her being crowned its fourth Miss Universe. Talk about Filipino pride here. 🇵🇭

LESSONS LEARNED

1.) Put my mental health first. It's okay not to be okay. I was very stressed during me and college buddy's thesis project. After we finished the thesis, I took a long rest and reflected a lot. Same thing back at early October (I also lost my Internet connection so... double advantage).

2.) Be decisive. Choose at your own risk.

3.) In general. It's okay if some people don't like you. You cannot please everybody. We have each other's opinions and perspectives in life. All you have to do is RESPECT.

HOPES FOR 2019

1.) All my fav football clubs/NT's must improve (not only this year but every year). Man United must push towards the top 4, keep clean sheets, and win silverware (the FA Cup is only our hope; CL? Let's see). Bayern must start keeping themselves clean sheets because their defence is aging. AC Milan? If their playing system backfires consistently, they might need an attacking manager the following season. England, Spain, and Mexico must push further in order to be qualified on their respective major continental tournaments for next year or two. Philippines? All I hope is they shall make their mark in their inaugural appearance in the Asian Cup. Let's go Azkals and Sven-Goran! Side note: I want Spurs to win the league this year. Poch has to prevail over the evil Scouse.

2.) Continue the Manchester United propaganda on Twitter, Instagram, and here. I will never stop supporting my first love in football.

3.) Work. I hope I'll be able to find a job after my six months of rest.

Philippines May 2019

Day 15 – Back to Manila

On the drive back this morning, Georgia spotted a nursery in the town of Naic, about half-way between Kawayan Cove and Manila. We stopped to buy more topsoil for Jonathan, her mother’s caretaker/gardener at the house in Manila. We purchased four 25-kilogram sacks of soil and a special bonus – two kamias trees and one guyabano! If you remember my “fruit of the day” description of kamias from our last trip, you’ll know that I’m not a fan, but it is an interesting tree. One day while driving out of our hotel in Puerto Galera, she noticed a house near the highway that had a kamias tree loaded with “fruit”. These strange things actually grow right out of the trunk and larger limbs, not among the leaves like any normal self-respecting fruit. Anyway, we had to stop and ask the people at the house if we could pick some – no problem (they probably don’t like them either and thought we were crazy) so we picked a kilo or two.

After relating the story of the kamias tree to the folks at the dive shop, the next morning the boatman presented Georgia with a huge bag of kamias! Enough to share with the whole world! I wish we could bring some back for all of you! 😉

I guess I got carried away about kamias. I was talking about caretaker/gardener Jonathan. He has quite a vegetable garden at the house in Manila, providing fresh veggies for himself and his girlfriend, and us when we’re here.

Whenever we come over we bring him seeds, and when we find it we buy topsoil as well as bring him used coffee grounds from Starbucks (they give them away free; they make excellent soil conditioner). Jonathan probably thinks that every time we come over he just gets more work to do…

Georgia and I are particularly interested in trying to grow a couple necessities here: good tomatoes (the local ones look and taste horrible), basil, and Haas avocados. I’ll tell my Philippines avocado story one of these days, maybe on the next slow day.

Tomato seeds we brought over in March are looking pretty good so far, we’ll see if they produce California tomatoes or if they get Philippinized.

A Haas avocado tree that sprouted from a pit we brought over is doing well in it’s paint can. We bought it a nice big plastic pot today at the Ace Hardware. Yes, a real Ace Hardware, my favorite store in Manila!

Basil doesn’t seem like something that would tolerate the heat but we’ve seen it grown in the open sun in a couple places over here. This looks like a good start. These were planted only 12 days ago!

Plants do grow fast here. Just before leaving for Mindoro we gave Jonathan seeds for squash, cucumbers, beets, various peppers, the basil, and a few others. Here’s the seedling tray, again just 12 days after planting. Look at the squash! That’s “Jack-and-the-Beanstalk” growth! Hopefully they haven’t swallowed the house when we come back.
