7. Is there something that could cause your oc to question their identity? What?

An excellent question! Hmmm, how to best answer this...

Xaja -- thought she was straight for years, then got hit on by a couple of women on Carrick and realized she liked it. She still tends toward men, but she can definitely appreciate women as partners -- she's openly bisexual. As far as her gender identity goes, she's pretty solidly a cis woman -- I'm not sure what would get her to consider another identity! She's a bit of a tomboy, but is definitely in touch with her feminine side.

Korin -- I don't know that he's ever questioned being a cis male, but he's definitely been down for sexual experimentation since he was a teenager with a vivid imagination and an insatiable curiosity. He found out pretty quick that he's bisexual. He did not like the situations where he had to try and embrace his feminine side though -- he appreciates and admires women, but definitely does not consider himself to be one.

Sorand -- He's had the most questions, I think! Gender-wise, he's mostly male with a bit of a squiggle. He self-identifies as male, but I think he's had some questions, since he's more in-tune with traditionally feminine things, like sporting long hair and being more soft-spoken and diplomatic. Sexuality, I assumed he was straight when I rolled him up 10 years ago -- when the idea of flirting back with Shara's original writer felt super squicky, I wondered if he was gay and so far in the closet he's in space!Narnia. But, the idea of flirting with a guy felt super wrong with him too -- so, he's ace! I think he's pretty comfortable with that identity now.

Reanden -- Honestly, I'm still not sure about him. He's definitely a cis male, that's never been in question! I think he's played around with his identity over the course of his career with the SIS and Imperial/Sith Intelligence, but he's come out of that pretty confident he's a straight man. Could he be swayed over for the right guy? Probably. But is he very content being married to Mairen and not inclined to look anywhere else? Definitely.

"No need to thank. I hope if my little sister happens to be in a situation like this she'll meet someone decent, too." He shrugged earnestly, waiting patiently as she snapped a picture of the vadd. It was a fucked up world, sadly it was out of his control, and it was unfair that he had to worry more about his sister getting stranded in the middle of a road that  any of his brothers. Taking the license back, Carrick snickered at her observation. "Not the first time I've heard that, especially here.'" He admitted then returned the shake. "Nice to meet you, Ella. Let's get going before it gets dark. Do you have any luggage? I can put it in the back." He offered, nodding to the car, walking at a polite distance from her and motioning the passenger door for her to go ahead and get seated. "We're about half an hour from the town." He informed as he got inside too and buckled up. "Twenty when I'm in a hurry." He added with tease. As he turned on the engine the stereo came to life too and the classic rock Playlist he'd been listening to picked up with AC/DC. "This was your destination or did you still had more hours to drive?" He asked to kick off the conversation as the car started moving.

It wasn't that Ella didn't want to trust this man, but she was in a strange place and for all intents and purposes he was, in fact, a stranger. But he was also the only person who had stopped to help, and as she turned to look toward the sun, it wasn't like she had much time for some other good Samaritan to deicide to show up before she was stuck stranded alone in her car. And that seemed like a much worse fate. A light chuckle left the dirty blonde as she nodded slightly. "Well, I can't lie, this situation definitely feels like I've earned a drink." she teased. She listened to his suggestion and nodded slightly. She could call her sister and let her know what was going on, stay connected with her so she could let the police know if something did happen. She couldn't deny it was a bit helpful when he offered his driver's license. A small smile lifted the corners of her lips further as she took his license. "Thank you." She took a picture of his license before texting it to her twin to let her know what had happened before taking another look at the license and then handing it back. "Carrick, that's an interesting name." she commented before keeping her hand extended once he'd taken the ID. "I'm Ella."

My resolution for 2022 was pretty simple - all I wanted was to keep track of the books I read over the course of the year. I tracked them all over on Instagram as I finished each book, and last night I finished book #24 (ETA I was able to get one more book in for 2022 and added it to the list).

Nearly all of these books were found through the Queer Science Fiction and Fantasy database, which is an excellent resource for finding books with prominent queer characters. Some of them are just from authors I already liked, but happened to have queer characters anyway, which was nice. I think books 10, 11, 17, and 23 are the only ones that don't have explicitly queer representation, though I have seen people online suggesting that the protags of 17 and 23 are aro/ace.

I also was able to get nearly all of these books through my local library, as well (technically, I could include the two books I already owned, since they are both rereads that I got originally from the library).

The Raven Tower, by Ann Leckie - this had a ton of elements that are extremely my jam, and I enjoyed reading this book a lot.

Together We Will Go, by J. Michael Straczynski - JMS has been destroying me emotionally since high school. I loved this book, but I needed something much, much lighter afterward.

The Sorceress and the Cygnet, by Patricia A. McKillip - this, and its sequel, are favorites of mine since middle school. I realized during this re-read that the character of Lauro Ro might be read as being aromantic, though I think it would be hard to say definitively.

When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain, by Nghi Vo - this and The Black God's Drums are both closer to novellas, but I'm still counting them. When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain was excellent, and I read it in one sitting while at the laundromat.

Winter's Orbit, by Everina Maxwell - it took a bit for me to get into, but I dug it - my kind of sci-fi, but not quite as much of a popcorn read as Scalzi, if you get my meaning. A bit heavier.

Tobias / Casey:

Casey is listening to this and dancing (really badly) all around their townhome. She's bopping around thinking she looks soooo sexy, and it's kind of not... but it's so damn adorable, she gets the desired reaction from Tobias anyway. Like when doesn't she get that reaction from him anyway? lol

Tobias is a huge Frank Ocean fan, and this is one of his go-to songs for when he's feeling a little 😏😏😏. I mean, it's Valentine's Day every day in the Carrick household, so they're gonna go big or go home on the actual day. (And yes, of course it works! lol)

Trystan / Carolina:

Carolina has been trying to introduce Trystan to Latin music, and since Luis Miguel was one of her father's favorites, he's one of hers, as well. This song isn't a typical Valentine's Day song because it's about longing and heartache, but that's kind of Carolina's vibe, even when she is madly in love.

Trystan is a Wham! stan. Sorry, it's canon. lol I think he's got a whole dance routine planned out... tight jeans, leather jacket, unbuttoned shirt, sunglasses... the works. And he ROCKS it. Carolina can't stop laughing, but this is why she loves him.

Ethan / Kaycee:

Kaycee is never leaving her Taylor era, and she really doesn't care that this song was written for Joe (Joe who???), and this little song reminds exemplifies her relationship with Ethan, so it's definitely on replay this Valentine's Day.

So, this ties into the Valentine's Day fic I'm finishing off for these two. But Ethan found her really likes this album, and this song in particular has a special place in his heart. I think it will become a Valentine's Day standard in their home.

Have you guys read the Rook and Rose trilogy by M.A. Carrick? One of the protagonists (and also one of my favourite characters of all time) is aro but not ace. There's a minor subplot about the guy he's sleeping with wanting a romantic relationship and him not understanding it at all, but the rest of the focus on him is completely centered around his platonic relationships and how he grows into them and heals to an extent. And they are given the same weight a romantic relationship would, as in there are subplots about problems in platonic relationships and emotional denouements of the same - actually all kinds of platonic relationships are treated with the same weight as romantic relationships all throughout the series, even for the allo characters, and it's really refreshing. It also has all kinds of queer rep in general and was written by actual queer people, and it also has a good quality of plot and characterization across the board.

I don't know if you're interested in books rather than shows (this is a complicated fantasy series that really throws you into the deep end with the worldbuilding so a far cry from Stephen Universe and whatever else you're talking about I'm not really a shows person tbh), but I wanted to point it out because it's my favourite queer rep of all time and I don't see many people talking about it.

I would trust allo people more with shipping Aromantic characters if they actually treated it as an aromantic relationship instead of an allo relationship. You can't honestly think I'll believe when you say "They're still aro when i ship them!" and then show no signs of understanding or exploring how their aro identity affects their relationship outside of "I like dating and kissing" You can't honestly expect me to trust you actually support aromantic people when the only time you throw out support for aros is when you're saying "Aros can still date and enjoy romance!" because you want to ship an aro character.

I would trust Allo people more with aro characters if they stopped treating them like allo characters the moment they wanted them to kiss someone.

The ever present serene smile that Pem usually wore spread into a radiant eye-crinkling expression with every word. "Thank you for that, Carrick. You paint a perfect picture. I think a lot of people don't realize how much it means to be given words for the color of the world around us." She leaned her elbows on the bartop, resting her chin on her hands as her head swiveled, following the sound of Carrick's voice as he spoke. There was a wistful expression on her face as she told him, "It sounds fun. Are you any good at it?"

Pembe blushed at his question. "I've heard of AC/DC but if I've heard their music I didn't know it was them. I like all types of music, but I think it just depends on what I'm making at work. Right now I've been listening to a lot of Ghostly Kisses, but I went through a rock phase when I was making steins for groomsmen gifts not that long ago. Maybe you can play some while I'm here bugging you?"

"The surface is green, there are nine solid-colored balls, white, black, yellow, orange, blue, green, red and purple and brown or maroon. The other seven balls are called striped because it's the same colors I mentioned with a white stripe." Carrick explained slowly, he couldn't help but feel he was mans planing, but he didn't know how much Pembe remembered about it, and she had asked to describe objects. "It's not distracting, don't worry." He reassured her. "The white ball starts the game, one person tries to hit all the solids into the pockets, the other all the striped and once that's done, the first who pockets the black one wins." He finished. At her question of a favorite song, Carrick hummed in thought as it wasn't something he got asked a lot, strangely it felt a lot like a first-date question. "I don't think I have one but I'm a big fan of anything from AC/DC, I'm mostly into rock but I have some moments where I can enjoy some country. How about you? What do you like listening, Pembe?" Carrick asked back.

I don’t wanna hijack the last post I reblogged because it’s specifically about trans representation in scifi/fantasy/historic fiction, but I am once again begging people to check out the Rook & Rose trilogy by M.A. Carrick, which has some of the best LGBT+ representation I’ve read in the world building.

Same sex marriages, asexuality, trans characters are simply part of the story and an expected part of society. There’s no drama about couples being same-sex, a guard being a trans man, or a leading astrologer being more interested in the stars than sex. (All of these characters are secondary main characters who play major roles in the plot.) It was refreshing to read and really nice to see how seamlessly everything was worked in.

That said, I’m white and I know that I can’t speak about how race relations are handled; I’ll let others speak on that and how the writers did. But as an ace who NEVER sees representation in books where the character’s lack of desire is treated as anything other than a quirk at best or a flaw at worst, I really loved the R&R books.

Also they’re just a ton of fun, think Scarlet Pimpernel set in fantasy Venice/Orlais and the Fade.

The first two books are out (The Mask of Mirrors and The Liar’s Knot) and the last one comes out next spring/summer! I also highly recommend the audiobooks, they are *fantastic*.
