Sherlock and Co.

So I just listened to the latest episode, the conclusion of A Case of Identity. I have to say, it was deeply disappointing. For the most part I've been really enjoying Sherlock and Co. It's been fun and engaging. The actors are great. It's a solid new take on "Sherlock Holmes but in the 21st century". I love that they're going through all the stories of the original canon and giving them modern updates. So many Sherlock Holmes adaptations seem to have the basic trappings of the characters and premise without any interest in the original mysteries. This show is clearly being made with love and deep attention to detail. Also, on a personal note, my heart melts every time it explicitly (and even casually!) confirms that Sherlock is autistic and that that is a DISABILITY for him. He gets overstimulated. It gives him an often restricted diet. He hurts people's feelings from not picking up social cues and feels bad about it! There's also a lot of hints that Sherlock used to struggle to interact with others FAR worse than he currently does, to the point where he has never graduated from any school he attended. And John is kind and supportive, understanding the situation as a friend and a doctor, while also having his own understandable limitations. He gets annoyed with Sherlock sometimes and they need to hash things out. It's not perfect between them, but I can see how they're growing closer as they come to understand each other. John Watson is also handled very interestingly in this podcast. He's clearly got some issues of his own he's going through. There's some obvious PTSD from his time in Afghanistan, but also more mundane issues. He feels unappreciated by his mother and still grieves the father that died when he was ten. He's clearly massively insecure, as he constantly expresses jealousy of other people's wealth, good looks, and success. He seems to perk up every time he hears of an idea that could, in theory, make him rich or successful. He constantly second-guesses himself in any social situation because he's so afraid of looking foolish. I even think the reason that he himself decided to call their detective/podcasting business Sherlock and Co. (rather than Sherlock and Watson or something more evenly balanced) is because of his profound insecurity. He doesn't think anyone would care about the role he plays in the business. Clearly Sherlock is the only interesting person there.

But for all of that, I think this is the most competent, helpful, and good Watson I've ever seen. (ACD's Watson is excellent, but the stories almost always really downplayed his role in the crime-solving.) He is shown, again and again, to be an excellent doctor and more than that, one who is very calm and capable under extreme pressure. (Which makes perfect sense with his history as an army doctor.) If someone gets shot at your wedding, Dr. John Watson is the one who will have the skill and the presence of mind to use an expired condom as a tool to save their life. And he's also a good co-detective. He regularly helps Sherlock see connections that Sherlock might have missed. Things relating to pop culture, to social norms, to anything medical, not to mention all the support and encouragement John offers. And Sherlock genuinely appreciates it! These two are an actual, real team! It's excellent! (I have a soft spot in my heart for Nigel Bruce's Watson, but I can't deny that he inspired a real line of idiotic, totally a sidekick, why-are-you-even-here Watson portrayals. Granted, we've gotten away from that in most modern portrayals; Liu, Freeman, and Law were also very capable, though I think Liu was easily the smartest. It's just refreshing to have a Watson I can respect.) But all of that is a pretty roundabout way of getting to my point of what disappointed me with A Case of Identity. So, in the original Case of Identity story, a woman comes to Sherlock and Watson saying that her fiancee has disappeared. The eventual solution is that everything about this fiancee was a lie. He was actually her evil stepfather in disguise "wooing" her with the intention of disappearing mysteriously and leaving her too heartbroken and loyal to think of marrying anyone else (and thus depriving her stepfather of her fortune). The Sherlock and Co. adaptation has a solid update to the story. It's now about a rich, though insecure, man who's being cat-fished. He loves "Angel", even wants to marry her, and has given her tons of money for two years now. He's only going to Sherlock at all because he has a friend who thinks the situation is sketchy. In a parallel to the original story, it turns out that "Angel" is actually Des, the client's stepfather. It started off as a scheme from Des and the mother, Clara, to keep Miles from dating women they didn't approve of. Then Des went behind Clara's back to keep the charade going and get more and more money, consequently getting more and more intimate with his stepson the whole time. I was already a bit nervous at that point, because Des was coming dangerously close to playing out a transphobic stereotype. Being a man who pretended to be a woman for personal gain, and willing to completely betray and deceive the people closest to him. It also didn't help that John had made a point of saying that there was nothing wrong with being a Tory mere minutes before. (Which to me read as more of his insecurity and need to not alienate the in-universe listeners but certainly wasn't interrogated.) But I tried to be optimistic and kept listening. Unfortunately...it was even worse than I'd feared. Des turned out to not only being grifting his stepson through a semi-incestuous cat-fishing scheme, but he had a split personality. Angel had become real through Des having a mental health crisis. And she could spontaneously take over, which she did in order to grab Clara and hold a knife to her throat when the truth came out. Finally, Angel/Des tries to kill themself, which is something the show has the audacity to make a joke about before the audience knows if Des lived or died.

Sooooo, yeah. That's incredibly offensive on so many levels. Angel, while not quite a trans character (I think?) plays into transphobic rhetoric beat-for-beat. It's also an incredibly cliche representation of split personality disorder that plays into extremely tired representations of people with mental illnesses being violent dangers to society. And that's especially disappointing because of the attention Sherlock and Co. usually pays to portraying mental health issues with sensitivity. What the fuck, Sherlock and Co.? Did you get a new writer for this one? Did they time travel directly from the 1950s? This is cheap drama that hurts. It hurts trans women. It hurts people with mental illnesses. And it hurts the wider queer and disabled communities. Which, if you're trying to get popular with the most vocal Sherlock Holmes fans today, are largely the exact people you most want to like you.

Cards on the table, I've been really hoping this show would finally be the adaptation where John and Sherlock would become an actual, explicit couple. It's something fans have longed for for literal generations and now that all of Sherlock Holmes is in the public domain it can finally definitely happen. I felt like Sherlock and John had good chemistry and were maybe even flirting in previous episodes, but I'll save those theories for now. My point is that this is a show where I believed that could happen. I trusted Sherlock and Co. to be respectful and thoughtful. And I'm not saying that all my goodwill is gone now. But it has taken a hit. Sherlock and Co. has been overwhelmingly clever and interesting, finding creative ways to recast the classic stories while still keeping their hearts. I love the acting, I love the action and mysteries, and I haven't even come close to expressing how much thought I've put into what overarching plot threads might be getting established in each episode.

But I won't be able to continue to enjoy those parts if I come to spend my time listening more concerned about if a plot twist is going to leave me feeling attacked. I don't know who writes for this show and I don't know if you read any reviews on Tumblr, but I hope you do. And I hope you do better in the future. An apology and some good trans representation in the future would be nice. Please, I really want to be able to obsess about your show peacefully!

Hi! I love Elementary, and specifically the addition of Kitty Winter in season 3. I feel like that arc was a fairly unique addition both for a procedural and for a Sherlock Holmes adaptation (so much so that I actually wrote my undergraduate thesis about it!). Having also read The Illustrious Client, I know that Kitty isn't necessarily an obvious choice to turn into the character she became. Or, at least, no more so than any other client Holmes and Watson helped in the ACD canon. The original story is honored and used, but Kitty also has a strong presence of her own. Do you know why Kitty was picked, specifically, or what about her story felt the most compelling way to follow up the season 2 finale?

We discussed using Kitty for a while. To us, and especially to Rob, she really stood out in canon, and she left a much bigger impression than "any other client." She throws acid in Gruner's face! We also were interested in the idea of a "ruined woman" and what it would mean to update that patriarchal Victorian concept to the modern day while preserving the fiery nature of ACD's original character.

We played with several different ways to bring Kitty into our story, then Rob hit on the idea of making her a new apprentice to Sherlock, as way to show how much he'd progressed through his relationship with Joan. His idea was also that she'd be a bit of a surrogate daughter to Sherlock and Joan, with the accompanying conflict brought on by their coparenting. We were extremely fortunate to get the wonderful Ophelia Lovibond to play her and the rest is history.

Since I'm juggling college, it can sometimes vary and may be up for discussion, but generally I will take up to two weeks to write the first 1k words, and a week per 1k words after that. I will however take twice as long for NSFW fics as I do for SFW fics (I'm asexual and sometimes sex-repulsed, so believe me when I say this is for the quality of the writing more than anything else).

I'll give regular updates, and snippets if you like, of the fic's progress

You'll have to pay half the amount upfront, and then I'll start working on the fic! Currently I only accept PayPal.

Life Update.

Finally caught up with Sherlock & co again! Got busy with my exams, etc., so couldn't post much for a while.

I'll be live-blogging the episodes that come after The Red Circle (that is from Tuesday, tomorrow).

Briefly speaking, The Red Circle was lovely. I just loved how action packed it was and how Sherlock and John were characterised. The technical issues did get a little overwhelming and too irritating, but I enjoyed it equally even when I was just going through the transcripts of it from the official website.

Bonus Boxing Sherlock and John's sword fighting!Hell yeah!! :D

Not so fond of The Three Students though. :P It was well-written, but I was kinda underwhelmed by the twist in the end. Didn't find it very memorable in the original version either (when I was reading ACD canon).

Loved how The Lion's Mane ended. Lots of deviations from acd canon, but the ending was tied to its Doyle story counter-part. The narration was smooth, plot was intriguing as hell. (I actually think they did a better job than the original story. I don't say this about a lot of episodes of the podcast. Just this one.) Loved the banter and characterisations of our three leads too!

May I interest you with something a bit different? it’s more an ACD story than a first prince story in a sense that it’s a sequel to the canon but told as a political story rather than a romcom/drama story. Alex’s political career is at the very center of it and, even if his relationship with Henry is very sweet (they’re married, have a daughter and more doggos) but it’s on the side rather than at the center of the storytelling.

That being said, it’s a beast and the work put in there is alone worth acknowledgment. It’s a compelling story and i was in the middle of reading it when i’ve listened to Taylor talk about what a character like Alex could do with a political career and what an irl Alex could do in our lives. A semi realistic semi hopeful what if that is interesting to entertain for a while.

If you’re interested, beware that it’s a wip and updates take a little time to be up (rightfully so as they’re really freaking long and aren’t probably easy to write).

A series of spooky incidents brings them together in a candlelit bedroom, the night ripe for revelations and facing fears.

The Babadook by CatieBrie (T, 6,886 w., 1 Ch. || Babadook Fusion || Post-TRF, Horror, Demonic Possession, Violence, Halloween, Grief, Angst with Happy Ending) – “A children’s book,” John mutters as he flips it open. The pages are scrawled with beautiful charcoal lines and thick black ink. The cover, bright red, edges the open pages and something tugs at the back of John’s brain. It’s a familiar feeling, black and tarrish and thick in his thoughts. He shakes it off and picks the book up off his bed, turning so that he can sit on the edge and spread the book out across his knees. If it’s in a word or it’s in a look, you can’t get rid of the Babadook. He turns the page, ignoring the pressure building beneath his chest. There’s a closet on one page; paper doors meant to be opened by the reader flutter as John reads the text on the other page.

The Spirit Child by VelvetMace (M, 7,287 w., 1 Ch. || Psychological Horror, Disturbing Themes, Horror, Gore) – A small wooden box filled with clay and feotus bones yields more than just clues to a violent murder. A Halloween Story. Read at your own risk -- and I do not say this lightly.

Were it Well by merelypassingtime (G, 7,496 w., 6 Ch. || Shapeshifter AU || Crack, Halloween) – When moving in with the world's only consulting detective John is concerned he won't be able to keep his secret. Turns out he need not have worried.

In the Shadows of 221B by CarmillaCarmine (E, 8,299 w., 5 Ch. || Halloween, Friends to Lovers, Spooky Smut) – On a stormy, Halloween night, Sherlock appears changed, but John isn't about to complain about anything Sherlock wants to do to him. Part 10 of the The Stories of Angst and Heartbreak series

i think my favorite addition to the canon holmes/watson dynamic across all the adaptations is when elementary holmes names a bee species after watson. it's such a small detail but it speaks volumes and is something canon holmes would absolutely do!! <3

do you ever think about how watson keeps mentioning how little holmes eats and how much that concerns him throughout the stories. and about how much this is telling us not only about holmes but about watson as well. watson cares so deeply about holmes as a doctor and as a friend that he tries again and again to help his partner follow healthier habits. watson is so desperate that he even uses his stories to get through to his friend, to tell holmes how much he cares and how much he wishes holmes would lead a healthier life

It does! :) This is my oldest WIP and one I’m very fond of, even though I’m really good at ignoring it, heh. It’s a BBC take on the canon story and I’ve mixed it up with the legend of the Buckland Shag, something I stumbled across by accident when I first starting working on this. The story follows canon loosely, in that John drags a recovering and reluctant Sherlock down to the countryside to relax. As in canon, their relaxing weekend goes sideways when they get caught up in a case, only this time it’s not as straightforward a solution.

Colonel Hayter is now Colin Hayter, a good friend of John’s from their days in service. William Kirwin is now Liam Kirwin, but his character diverges from canon as I like him too much. Annie Morrison, barely a mention in REIG, plays a much bigger role too. 

Colin Hayter was leaning against a black Land Rover parked in the narrow street in front of the station. His head was down, focused on the phone in his hands, and he didn’t see John and Sherlock as they walked out of the station.

“Oi, Hayter you berk, what kind of welcome is this?” John quickened his pace and jogged across the road to where Colin stood.

Startled, Colin looked up and grinned when he saw John. He tucked his phone away and stood straighter. “Watson, you wee bastard! What were you expecting, a hero’s parade?”

John snorted. “What else?” He stumbled in his haste and laughed some more.

“Still as graceful as always, I see. Come here, give us a cuddle!”

John dropped his bag by the side of the car and reached for Colin. “My friend, it’s good to see you.”

“Too long, John. It’s been too long.”

“I know, it has been.”

The two men hugged tightly.

Sherlock, who had taken his time crossing the street, stood off to the side and looked a bit unsure.

John squeezed Colin a final time and turned to Sherlock, who was watching them both with interest. John could only wonder at the deductions the man was making. “Sherlock, this is Colin. Colin, Sherlock.”

Colin stuck out his hand. “Sherlock, it’s excellent to finally meet you. I’ve been following John’s blog and expect to hear all about the stories that didn’t make it in there. I get the feeling our John keeps a lot off the page.”

Sherlock clasped Colin’s hand. “Don’t believe a word he says.”

Colin laughed. “Oh, you and I have some good tales to trade, I think.”

I have it set S1/S2 and it has lots of my favorite tropes: hurt/comfort, holidayfic, friends to lovers, competency kink. I have bits of John’s blog post about the case scattered throughout the fic. It’s my first (if I ever finish) chaptered work and right now I’m at 8036 words.
