on the shroud parents helmet thing, I'm pretty sure Idia's mentioned before that his ancestors (including his parents) use magic tech to deal with their curse and the blot or something like that. In which case, my theory is that's what the helmets probably are?

It does make me wonder then, if the curse also transfers to whoever marries into the Shroud family - seeing as Both Mama and Papa Shroud wear the helmets.

In 6-42, Idia actually says that his dad and grandma (not his mom) use technomantic devices to enhance their own magic. The reason for doing this is not to better handle their curse or their blot; the Shroud family curse is such that their bodies naturally burn blot (in which case, they wouldn’t need additional help burning through it unless maybe they were very distraught (as emotional state contributes to blot) and/or accumulating blot as a magical byproduct at an extremely rapid rate like Idia did before his OB).

So it could be that Grandma Shroud and Mr. Shroud have low levels of magic and felt that they had to supplement what they were able to do via other means, OR they have pretty normal levels of magic but needed or wanted their magic enhanced for the sake of performing certain tests or procedures. The latter would compensate for general STYX staff having low levels of magic (a safety precaution to minimize the blot they accumulate). The same is not true of Idia, who is magically inclined enough to attend a prestigious school, so we can infer that low magic levels don’t necessarily apply to members of the Shroud family on staff.

The curse seems to only be applicable to those in the Shroud bloodline; it originated as a means of punishing the first head of the Shrouds for rebelling against the Jupiter family. Not only was the first generation cursed, but it extended to their descendants. (If we think about it, the Shroud blood thins with every subsequent generation so… either it’s possible the curse wears off once the percentage of Shroud blood drops below a certain number, or the curse is such that even a single drop of Shroud blood dooms you.)

Pulling in outsiders that marry into the Shrouds seems… logistically dubious (even if we dismiss it as “it’s magic, so it doesn’t need to be explained”)?? Like, how does the magic for the curse even know when the marriage is technically “official” and it’s time to inflict itself on the spouse… Because laws for marriage change all the time, not to mention a couple could still be in love and have kids without technically being married. Would the S/O be cursed even if they don’t produce a child with their Shroud partner or never hand hold get physically intimate? Is just loving a Shroud enough grounds to be hit with the curse? But then how does the curse define “love”? What if they fall out of love or divorce/break up with a Shroud, is the curse revoked? Or is the S/O just kind of screwed? Why would the Jupiters even weave the curse to punish people not even remotely related to the original uprising? (It’s still unfair that the Shroud descendants also get cursed, but at least it can be argued that it follows the theme of “the sins of the father are the sins of the son”.) To hurt the Shrouds more by dragging their romantic partners down with them? But isn’t the original curse enough, why rub more salt into the wound? If you make them afraid to get close to people because the curse might pass to them, then doesn’t it defeat the purpose of continuing the line and thus prolonging the curse? Am I boring you yet 😂

Curses have rules and conditions outlined (like when Vil uses his UM) to govern how the magic behaves and how/when it releases. If the Jupiters spun such an elaborate curse to cover all their bases, we might need an attorney that’s well-versed curses and blessings on the case/j

To close off, I’ll share a funny idea a friend pitched! They said that if the helmet is really what Mr. Shroud uses to enhance his magic, then Mrs. Shroud must have decided to also wear a helmet to be supportive of her husband’s decision and/or to be a cute matching couple 💕

Climate neglect is destroying entire cities in Brazil

The bleak scenario in a state devastated by extreme rains brings a reminder to the world: acting now will be much easier and cheaper than when the worst impacts of the climate crisis arrive

May was a month of sadness and dismay in Brazil. Extreme rainfall left two-thirds of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, which has a territory larger than that of the United Kingdom, underwater.

To date, 161 people have died and 81 are missing due to flooding caused by the unprecedented flooding of rivers and lakes in this state in southern Brazil, bordering Argentina and Uruguay. Almost 600,000 people lost their homes and more than 80,000 had to be rescued from rooftops, on boats or in security force helicopters.

Besides, more than 12,000 pets had to be saved from death by rescue teams, including a horse that was left stranded on a roof and became a symbol of the surreal impact that a tragedy like this represents.

The images and testimonies of those affected are heartbreaking. At 350.org, we also had employees and partners personally affected by the disasters. An indigenous leader who, two years ago, played a fundamental role in the fight to end a coal mine project in the region and thus helped prevent the environmental degradation of a huge area, lost her home and saw her neighborhood destroyed. A freelance colleague in the Communications area had to hurriedly leave her apartment, on the first floor of a building in the state capital, because the water level accumulated in the street rose so quickly that it reached the height of her doors and windows. Fortunately, both of our friends are safe, but the scare and damage caused to them – and the hundreds of thousands of people affected ��� will last a long time.

The individual effects of the tragedy are also reflected on a collective scale, and the economic impacts will be felt not just at the state level but nationally. One of the country’s main financial analysis companies, MB Associados, estimates that the disaster will reduce Brazilian GDP growth by up to 0.5 percentage points in 2024, due to the massive destruction of infrastructure and the loss of goods and services in Rio Grande do Sul. Company analysts say a climate event has never caused so much economic damage in Brazil.

And it is worth remembering that, as often happens in times of great collective loss, poor communities and families made up of black and indigenous people were disproportionately harmed. Environmental racism and climate injustice have once again become clear.

Letter: School in the time of COVID-19 - Published Sept 5, 2024

We can disagree on many things, but all of us should be able to agree on this simple fact:

Once again children and youth in B.C. are returning to school during a COVID surge.

Needless to say what will follow is predictable. Sadly, it was preventable, had we prioritized the rights of children to life, health, safety and education and child development during an ongoing pandemic.

Make no mistake, the emergency phase may be over, but COVID-19 is not.

B.C. preschool and school children, their families and teachers will yet again be infected with COVID-19 this fall. That is, unless they were recently infected, or they are part of the minority of families who continue to use all available layers of protection to avoid a (re)infection.

Last year in B.C., updated COVID-19 vaccines became available only after Thanksgiving.

By then, infections had already peaked. This year again, unless things change, the newest COVID-19 vaccines will likely only be available too late for many B.C. school children, their families and their teachers.

B.C. is not alone. The other provinces and territories are also failing children with schools restarting when the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is high and yet another more contagious sub variant, KP.3.1.1, is spreading freely.

However, If you are in B.C., you’d be hard pressed to find up to date COVID-19 information.

As of May 2, the BCCDC declared the respiratory virus season over and switched its COVID-19 Situation Report from weekly to monthly. It’s as if someone thought limiting data in the summer would make COVID-19 disappear, or perhaps help it become seasonal.

Thankfully, the Government of Canada has continued to report Respiratory virus trends. As shown in the graph below, unlike RSV and Influenza, SARS-CoV-2 does not stop spreading with the arrival of summer (surveillance week 25). Maybe your family has already learned this.

The reported laboratory test positivity rate as of Aug. 24 was 17.9 per cent in B.C., same as last year when school reopened. This number is an under estimation of the true level of infections in B.C. communities given testing is restricted to healthcare settings (EDs, hospitals and congregate settings outbreaks) while community rapid tests results are not being recorded.

By comparison, BCCDC’s last reported COVID-19 Situation Report is from July 27, 2024, too long ago to be of much use to parents and teachers. The next one is out today, Sept. 5, after B.C. schools’ resume. It’s really difficult to manage one’s risk of COVID-19 without any timely and easily accessible data.

Thanks to Dr. Tara Moriarty, an infectious disease researcher and associate professor at the University of Toronto, faculty of Dentistry, the Canadian COVID-19 Forecast for Aug. 31 to Sept. 13, 2024, now confirms that B.C. is in the severe category, with estimates of about one in every 27 people infected or roughly 196,900 - 224,800 infections this week.

This is higher than the national COVID-19 forecast and represents the highest hazard level of any Canadian province and territory during this time period. As B.C. schools restart, this translates to likely one person infected in a class of 26 students plus a teacher.

This is a rinse and repeat of last fall and the ones prior during this ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. How long can we keep on re-infecting school children and teachers?

There is another way. It involves cleaning the air that our children and their educators share and breathe. The accumulated evidence is there, “respiratory viruses” are breathed in.

Worth reminding that even though SARS-CoV-2’s enters via the respiratory tract, it is a vascular virus that can impact every organ system of the body, and its effects can last well after the acute phase of the illness is over. This is true for adults, adolescents and children, though the presenting symptoms may differ.

This school restart should have been different.

In April, the BC Green Caucus introduced the Clean Air Act. A private member bill, it “proposes that both indoor and outdoor environments be monitored and regulated for air quality, especially in places frequented by vulnerable groups such as children, students, and the elderly.”

This bill addresses pollution, wildfire smoke and infectious aerosols. It passed first reading, but when the second reading will occur is anyone’s guess.

In late May, the Healthy Environment and Climate Change (HECC) team of VCH Public Health co-produced with Fraser Health a guidance document on Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality for Schools and Childcare Facilities.

It marks a significant departure from prior BC public health COVID-19 recommendations and states, “Many respiratory infections are transmitted through the air from a person infected with a virus or bacteria. Ventilation and air filtration may help to reduce transmission of respiratory infections, particularly in crowded, poorly ventilated spaces.”

Many of B.C.’s schools are” crowded and poorly ventilated spaces”, especially the portables and schools without any mechanical HVAC.

In June, at the Educational Facility Managers Association BC’s Annual Conference, Stephen McNichols, the engineer on the Ventilation Technical Advisory Panel for the Ministry of Education and Child Care, presented the latest ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers) Standard 241, Control of Infectious Aerosols.

This standard was issued by ASHRAE in June 2023 to establish equivalent clean airflow requirements to reduce the risk of disease transmission through exposure to infectious aerosols in buildings and spaces (e.g. schools, hospitals, residential homes) during an epidemic or in a pandemic like COVID-19.

Then in early August, the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care updated its HVAC guidance to school districts and included ASHRAE’s Standard 241.

These slow steps towards addressing clean air in schools and in childcare facilities gave me hope that this year, B.C. schools restart would actually look different.

Unfortunately, so far none of these new guidances have translated into any meaningful improvements to the indoor air quality in B.C. schools.

Until today, Suzy Mah, a Vancouver School Board Trustee, was herself unaware of the new VCH/FH guidance on Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality in Schools and Childcare Facilities. Meanwhile the pandemic continues, and parents still have no idea what is the quality of the air in their school children’s classroom.

History will not be “kind” to the adults charged with keeping kids healthy and learning in school in the time of COVID-19.

Look at the latest rumors that his new permanent girlfriend may be pregnant, and the divorce is not even finalized and the issue of custody is still being resolved, this is the kind of scandal, if it is true. And by the way, this is not the first rumor about his girlfriend after the divorce, who was maybe pregnant and the other is more younger. And his fans swallow even such trash and try to fight back and justify joe. That's why they attack Sophie, they try toslander her so that joe can be better in the public yeys. But I'm sure all their attempts are poor. And it's so funny that they think joe is more popular than Sophie. It's funny, she's famous all over the world, she's a popular actress, and he's just a mediocre musician with his brothers, his fans should kiss Sophie's feet and worship her like a goddes, if it wasn't for her there wouldn't be a jonas brothers reunion and if it wasn't for Sophie joe now although he might not be popular, he is popular only because he was the husband of Sophie Turner herself and always followed her by the tail to all her events, but she was at his events only a few times, much less often than he was at hers, and he always called her to some of his interviews, etc., so that she would appear at least for a moment and increase his views, etc. etc. That's why his fans are poor mind. Twitter can be a very toxic place, indeed. I don't use it that much. I barely post. I only check the Sophie Turner hashtag to read the news. I mean the movies announcement for example first started on Twitter.

I don't really want to talk about the pregnancy rumors. It only started because of a picture she posted on Instagram. I find it extremely weird when people (fans) start commenting on people's body. Honestly, they should talk about the fact Stormi started dating a minor, then married him and had a child with him. That's such a weird thing.

Oh yes, he was very much a fan of Game of Thrones and while I understand being overjoyed your girlfriend is on the show, it was always weird. Like his birthday cake on which he was sitting on the Iron throne and Sophie was just there by his side. And he was very happy going to LV shows with her. (I remember his family suddendly wearing LV when they started dating). He was her plus one at the MET gala too. Nick kinda did the same with Priyanka. But he seems far more respectfull towards her. But I don't know much about them.

The Jonas brothers got back together because Nick wanted to. It's Sophie being closed to her brothers that inspired Joe to accept. I remember him saying it in an interview. And Sucker was so damn successful because Danielle, Priyanka and Sophie appeared in it. Even the brothers know it. Their fans obviously less so when they claim Joe made Sophie popular. They probably don't even care that the Jonas brothers have a hard time selling the tickets for their concerts. It just shows they're not as popular as they were when with Disney...

For Sophie, I like her new haircut too. It looks pretty. And it changes a lot from long hair. I believe we have to wait this summer for promo if Joan really gets released in September.

14. Heartfelt Sentiment

Reassigned to Fiores' former underboss position by the end of the week, Mordecai finds himself with very little free time, something he doesn't begrudge. Having recently severed all ties with his family and now his only friend, he's glad for the distraction that comes with restructuring an entire network of lucrative hustles, burying himself under the workload. Mentally exhausted by ledgers and body still healing, he's swift to pass out once he hits the mattress, barely able to ruminate on emotional detriments.

Once able to walk reliably, he borrows Mr Kovitz's cane and makes a point of visiting each establishment now under his management, both to familiarise himself with each business and obtain first hand experience of their functionality. He quickly realises that while Fiores introduced an overarching ledger system into all seven of his branches, he didn't train anyone specific to manage them, resulting in numerous sets of incomplete ledgers, lost stock and missing revenue.

Weeks are poured into fixing inconsistencies, repairing core infrastructure and generally reorganizing the staff to ensure each site had a single man responsible not just for stock or ordering, but for collating each employee's ledgers into one at the end of each night. This final ledger, along with all the individual ledgers from each employee, are then checked for errors and approved personally by Mordecai before being sent to Savage; a workload that keeps him exceptionally busy.

Finding himself in control of those enterprises' finances, not only does he instigate a similar commission system to the one he arranged with Fiores but increases the percentage for those who maintain final ledgers, ensuring they manage their time and men as effectively as possible in his absence.

The more enjoyable financial work is infrequently interrupted by interrogations summons, a branch of his duties Mordecai most detests, now he has more interesting engagements to attend. He resents every target for dragging him away from his management role and it shows in his methodology. The rumours spread suggest he's less patient with the obstinate, more violent with his persuasive techniques and often would inflict further harm after confessions 'to be certain' they'd shared all they had to offer before the session concluded.

There's also rumours he's personally executed targets after their torture sessions ended, but it remains pure conjecture; the Kosher Butcher won't discuss his work in the factory with anyone, not even Gabriel.

Weeks slip past without acknowledgement. After a second, painful visit from the brash nurse, Mordecai learns to clean and dress his own wounds and three weeks later, removes his own stitches with boiling water, scissors and a pair of pliers. All that remains is a slight indent in the muscle of his outer thigh, edged with a thin scar; no phantom pain, no loss of mobility, no compromised function. 

I got lucky, he thinks whenever the scar catches his eye. He often traces the edge of it with a claw in the shower, the fine line where no fur regrows, a reminder to be more diplomatic. With newly acquired spare funds and a livelihood worth protecting, he invests in his first handgun; a stolen piece an older enforcer sold for a quick buck, now slung at his hip. To ensure history does not repeat itself. 

With excess funds saved by managerial systems, Mordecai repairs the rundown launderette that's become his office and begins running the shop as an actual laundromat, which helps remove the increasing number of blood stains his suits accumulate when he moonlights at the factory. The small boost in revenue even allows the tom to pay enforcers to ensure he's never ambushed while finalising accounts.

In the launderette back room, surrounded by ledgers and a cup of Earl Gray in hand, it's easy to forget he used to have a life outside of the underworld. It's only on Sundays, when residual memory buried deep in his subconscious continues to wake the monochrome tom well before sunrise, that he remembers; a mother, two sisters, early morning prayers. An entire other life he's abandoned.

For almost a year, Mordecai rises and walks the dark streets as he did as a child, cloaked by twilight, as if ashamed of the ritual, his hat pulled low and hands deep in his overcoat pockets. The pistol taps his thigh with each step, a reminder of all he's committed to as he pauses at the end of the street and waits, hidden in the shadows until the remnants of his family sleepily file out of the home and head to the morning services.

Once they turn the far corner, he'll jog up the steps, slip an envelope of money under their door, and head home again.

His emotions are always conflicted as he walks home; with his eighteenth birthday, living alone and not having spoken to her for a year, Mordecai has no obligation to his mother's bills. He could keep his earnings, spend all his savings on a lavish lifestyle befitting an underboss, or move into a larger place in a better neighbourhood. He'd be self made; respected; feared; and alone in his peaceful apartment.

Yet he still pushes half of his wages under the door while they're at temple, perhaps too ashamed to face his mother, or perhaps too afraid of a confirmation rejection. Sundays are hollow and empty, every activity unfulfilling until he just goes back to bed, sleeping away the day and waking early to begin his week once more, a week full of numerals and victims, all exhausting and distracting, always busy.

This Sunday is supposed to be the same. He wakes early, dresses smart, slips his pistol into its holster and heads out with his overcoat collar popped, shoulders hunched, his old satchel bumping his hip. Arriving at the corner, he pauses to wait and checks his pocket watch, running his thumb across the embossed face before clicking it open. He's on time. They'll leave any moment.

Time passes, but his family doesn't leave. Brows knit into a frown, Mordecai once again checks his watch, holds it to an ear to check it still ticks and has not malfunctioned. Fifteen minutes have gone by beyond their latest former departures and yet this morning, there's nothing. He takes a tentative step closer to glance inside, but with the curtains drawn and lights off, he can't see any movements in the windows.

The monochrome tom deduces they must have left earlier - it's happened once before - and resumes his usual routine; extracting an envelope of cash addressed to mother from a breast pocket, Mordecai jogs up the steps, crouches down, and eases the wedge beneath the door.

Once content the envelope is safely inside, he straightens, adjusts his coat and has just turned to leave when he hears the door crack open. He freezes on the top step, ear turning to the sound as a slither of weak light illuminates the view to his left. Despite the opportunity being right there, practically begging him to engage, he just can't find the strength to turn and face whomever caught him delivering the money.

The door closes, leaving Mordecai alone once more, lost to the twilight of yet another Sunday. His shoulders sag, dark ears fold back and he holds the creaking metal railing as a ground for his emotions, unsure what he'd hoped to happen, but definitely discontent even his family couldn't talk to him. Emerald eyes close as he grips the railing tightly, his leather gloves creaking, forcing himself to breathe, to focus-

Mordecai stiffens, left hand immediately going to the handle of his pistol as slim arms encase his torso, drawing him into the small feline directly behind him and a warm embrace. It takes him a heartbeat to feel the pince nez dig into his back when a face presses between his shoulder blades, but he releases the pistol soon after, exhaling shakily as he rests a gloved hand on his sister's arm, relaxing just a little in the familial embrace.

"I miss you," Esther whispers into the dark, a secret lost to the developing sunrise. Her arms tighten a smidgen, pulling at his waist, the envelope of cash crinkling in her grasp just under his arm. "We all do. Come home. Please."

For once, the monochrome cat is lost for words, incapable of drawing any with adequate weight to feel fitting. Whether she's aware of that or simply accepting of his silence, Esther doesn't demand a response from her estranged brother. All she does his hold him, breathing him in, memorising the feel of embracing him for what feels like moments but is closer to minutes until finally, she releases him to the shadows.

Numbed nerves tingle as Esther wordlessly goes back into their childhood home, a brief slither of light once again cast onto Mordecai's back before a quiet click brings their private reunion to a close. It takes the tom a few minutes to find the momentum to leave. He jogs down the steps and heads to his own apartment, locking himself inside before spending the rest of the day trying to burn a restless energy deep in his bones, painfully nostalgic memories of his time at home constantly floating to the forefront of his mind

Inbreeding and asexual reproduction can both cause the accumulation of deleterious mutations, and that crazy person was relying on you not knowing that they do those things in different ways and at different rates to make their point. Their point was also to argue against a human movement that does not exist at all, but I wanted to point out the leap they’re making between the cited “evidence” and the supposed lesson it teaches us as well, to make clear the attempt at tactics here.

And now I’m going to take this opportunity to talk about genetics! Yaaaayyyyy!!!

Part 1, Inbreeding:

Inbreeding still involves sexual reproduction, and therefore still involves allele reshuffling, and this is actually key to how deleterious alleles can accumulate in these circumstances.

Because if a recessive allele (let’s call it “r”) exists in a family lineage, which is not harmful when an individual has only 1 copy of the bad recessive allele, and then 1 copy of the okay dominant allele (aka they are heterozygous, genotype “Rr”), but is “deleterious” or harmful when an individual has 2 copies or the bad recessive allele (aka they are homozygous recessive “rr”), then the chances of parents both carrying that bad allele without knowing it are higher if they are related.

So this “r” allele arises through mutation in 1 individual. They have the genotype Rr, and they reproduce with someone with the genotype RR. Neither of them experience the negative effects of the bad allele. They produce 4 offspring. Assuming that everything with these genes is pretty simple, then following Mendelian genetics, the expected genotypes of their offspring are this:

So we have 2 offspring that are homozygous dominant. They don’t express the effects of the bad allele cause they don’t have it and they can’t pass it to their offspring, lucky them! Then we have 2 heterozygous offspring. Just like Parent 1, they don’t express the effects of the bad allele but they can pass it to their offspring.

Now, since this is a new mutation that developed in Parent 1, then we can assume that the rest of these individuals’ population doesn’t have it, so if Offspring 2&4 go and breed with unrelated individuals, then they’ll make more carrier offspring, but no homozygous recessive offspring. If the overall population is very large, then this isn’t a big problem. If the chance of 2 heterozygous individuals reproducing together is very low because there are significantly more homozygous dominant individuals in the population, then everything is fine.

Even if, by chance, 2 heterozygotes do breed, the chance of any of their offspring being homozygous recessive (“rr”) is 1 in 4. The deleterious alleles would express themselves in that individual, causing them to have a harder time surviving and/or reproducing, resulting in fewer-to-no opportunities for that individual to pass down the bad recessive allele. Additionally, if that individual dies before they reproduce at all, that isn’t a huge hit to the population because that’s 1 individual out of, say, a thousand.

But what if something really bad happened just before this? Like a huge drought or a volcanic eruption or a forest fire? What if Parent 1&2 and Offspring 1-4 are 6 individuals out of… like.. 16? And what if some of those other surviving individuals aren’t part of the breeding population because they’re too young or too old? That brings our functional breeding population down to… let’s say 12.

Now, I could go on and show you how the chances of 2 heterozygotes breeding would increase by generation, but that would require more math than I’m willing to do right now, so let me just point this out: Parent 1 was a single heterozygote, and they had a 50% chance to produce another “r” carrier like themself. Depending on how many offspring a heterozygote produces in their lifetime, they can dramatically increase the number of heterozygotes in the population, and even more dramatically increase the percentage of heterozygous individuals if it’s in a small population.

But I’m gonna skip right to the chase so I can talk about energy investment a bit and say that, by chance, Offspring 2&4 breed, and produce 4 offspring.

Now, Offspring 2&4 have put in the energy to produce 4 offspring. If Offspring 8 dies before they reach sexual maturity, or otherwise does not reproduce, then from a population genetics/evolutionary biology analysis standpoint, they have used the energy necessary to produce 4 offspring, but only got 3. This is bad for them individually, and for the population, because they used resources from their environment that could have gone to producing more viable offspring, and when the population is small, every bit counts.

They also produced 2 heterozygotes, which pose a problem of potentially increasing the frequency of that bad “r” allele in the population, and only 1 homozygous dominant individual.

This has already gotten so fucking long, and I fear I’m getting very confusing, so I’m gonna jump ahead a bit and say that those 2 new heterozygotes, Offspring 6&7, each went on to breed with “RR” individuals and each produce 4 offspring, with genotypes that would be predicted by a punnet square (that table I’ve been showing you). And let’s say that in this newest generation the breeding population ends up being about 16. The offspring of #6 and #7 then make up half of this breeding population, and half of their offspring are heterozygotes. That means now that 1/4 members of the breeding population are heterozygotes.

That means there is a much higher probability of 2 heterozygotes breeding, using resources and producing inbred recessive homozygous offspring that are evolutionary-fitness-wise unsuccessful, and additionally producing the same number of heterozygotes and fewer homozygous dominant individuals than a RR x Rr breeding pair would on average.

This decreases the percentage of homozygous dominant individuals in the population, which because of how percentages work, increases the relative percentage of heterozygote carriers, and decreases the number of successful offspring produced for the same amount of energy and resources invested.

SO overall you see a slow steady increase in the frequency of this harmful, or more properly deleterious, allele over the generations.

Also if a homozygous recessive individual does manage to reproduce, then this is what happens:

RR x rr = 4 Rr individuals. So now we have 4 new heterozygote carriers.

Rr x rr = 2 Rr individuals, and 2 rr individuals. So now we’ve used the energy and resources required to make 4 offspring but for 2, and 2 carriers at that.

So yeah, inbreeding that occurs because of population bottlenecks that drastically decrease population size, can cause deleterious mutations to build up really quickly (in evolutionary terms) and decimate a population.
