the magnus archives: horror podcast abt the head archivist of an institute researching experiences w the supernatural. protagonist is canonically biromantic asexual, in a mlm relationship in s5, and there is another canon bisexual character, as well as (iirc) a canon wlw couple - yall know ive been so into tma lately its so so good, obviously if you dont like horror its not for you but if you do.. 👀

sanders sides: youtube series abt a gay dude working out his emotional problems via personified aspects of his personality. all the characters are gay cuz thas what thomas is baby! - i was hesitant abt putting this cuz thomas is a person not a character lol but if u haven't seen sasi i recommend it its like free therapy but theres songs sometimes

julie and the phantoms (netflix remake): musical show abt a teen girl rediscovering music after her mothers death w the help of three ghosts who were in a 90s band. canon gay character w a slow burn romance (not yet canon bfs but s2 lets go) - its very cheesy and the musical segments can drag on a bit but its p good overall

lucifer: detective show abt lucifer abandoning his rule of hell to buy a nightclub and beginning to solve murders w the lapd. lucifer is canonically bi/pan, as is his demon pal mazikeen, but queerness rly isnt a focus of the show its more casual rep - that being said its a good show overall, if a little predictable now n then (s1-3 on amazon prime, 4+5 on netflix)

kipo and the age of wonderbeasts: fantasy cartoon set in a future filled w mutant intelligent animals, kipo finds herself lost and has to get home w the help of her friends. canon gay character as one of the mains, canon nb side character - its a rly good cartoon! lots of fun, excellent soundtrack, and the main characters are all poc which is rly nice to see

the dragon prince: cartoon abt two princes and an elf assassin returning a dragon egg to its mother. canon mlm couple, several canon wlw characters, canon nb character - i havent seen the show myself but ive heard very good things abt it!

i am not okay with this: netflix show abt a teen girl discovering she has superpowers and hating it. protag is canon wlw (i THINK shes a lesbian but i havent watched it in a hot sec), developing wlw relationship - ianowt slaps! sad that s2 got cancelled but s1 is real good its a touch spooky and theres a bit of gore/blood so watch out lol

schitt's creek: sitcom abt a rich family who lose all their money and have to move into the motel of a town they bought as a joke. canon pansexual character and canon gay character w one of the sweetest mlm relationships - a rly good witty show w excellent character development for every character!

good omens: show abt a demon and an angel trying to stop the end of the world. every celestial character in it is nonbinary, + crowley and aziraphale have a nonexplicit (ie no on screen pda lol) romance - good omens is such a good queer show none of the characters care abt gender in the slightest lmao, plus the show in general is fantastic (the book is also very good)

movies!

the old guard: a group of immortals fight an organisation that wants to capitalise off their immortality. canon mlm couple - another one i havent seen yet (i will!) but apparently very good

it chapter 2: horror sequel to It, w the main characters returning to derry to defeat pennywise for good. canon gay character in unrequited love - i only say chapter 2 because his queerness isnt referenced at all in the first film, again its big horror and theres no gay romance just gay tragedy but its a good film

love, simon: romcom about a closeted gay teen falling in love w someone over emails. do i even need to state the rep? - honestly if u haven't seen love simon yet what are you even DOING its so good proper fluffy queer romcom, the book (simon vs the homosapiens agenda) is also really good!! so is the sequel (leah on the offbeat) where the protag is a bi girl + it focuses on a wlw romance

the way he looks: brazilian coming of age film abt a blind teen boy falling for the new kid at his school. canon mlm relationship - this doesnt seem to be on (british) netflix anymore so idk where youd find it with subtitles but i rmr liking it a lot!

games!

night in the woods: 2d platformer abt a young woman (well. cat) dropping out of college and coming home to live w her parents + discovering spooky happenings in her hometown. canon mlm couple and i believe the protag is canonically bi? - i will recommend nitw to literally anyone who will listen its one of my all time favourite games, deals w a lot of mental health issues and its absolutely gorgeous w a brilliant soundtrack and rly good dialogue thats witty and serious and realistic (its on steam + switch for sure dk abt other platforms, abt 15 quid i think?)

tell me why: adventure game abt twins returning to their childhood home + findin Secrets. canon trans male character - i havent got around to buying + playing this yet but it looks really good! (its in three chapters + on steam, not sure on price)

the art of being normal: slice of life novel abt a young trans girl discovering herself. main characters are a trans man and a trans woman. - a good novel! trigger warning for transphobic actions including descriptions of a transphobic attack on the guy, and its certainly not without its faults otherwise, but i thought it was pretty good

the adventure zone: dungeons and dragons podcast by the mcelroy brothers. idk specifics but theres a lot of canon queer characters in it! - i havent listened to taz yet but i know a lot abt it, inc that its good and funny and has plenty of queer rep

I adore Nikolai but I'm new to the games. Why does he have two different names? Nikolai Zinoviev and Nicholai Ginovaef? Does using one or the other really matter?

I’m gonna try to explain it as simple as possible, because I’m not even sure I know where all the confusion came from at first, but it’s definitely there. The first problem seems to be that Nicholai Ginovaef is a weird ass transliteration of his name that goes back to the original game - his surname was never addressed in game, but subtitles always showed his name as Nicholai (I can vouch for the Spanish subtitles, haven’t seen any others!). 

I guess it’s because it comes initially from the Japanese katakana (ニコライ・ジノビェフ) into romaji, aka the Latin alphabet (Nikorai Jinobaefu), since katakana usually copies the pronunciation of foreign words. So, when transliterating the surname, they just changed the “Jinobaefu” into “Ginovaef,” because it sounds the same. Using Nicholai instead of Nikolai seems to be because they went for the Nordic spelling instead of Slavic (it was @hereswhatsarasaid who made me aware of this, because I had no idea there was such a difference, I just thought they used “ch” to transcribe that sound, like in words such as “alchemist” 😂.) 

But since it’s a Russian name, apparently the actual transliteration of his name from the Cyrillic script (which, according to my trusty Lexilogos, is николаи зиновиев) should be Nikolai Zinoviev. I have no knowledge of Russian, though, so maybe any native speakers can confirm if this is correct? I’d trust their take on this over anyone.

The thing is, I haven’t seen “Nikolai Zinoviev” used in canon material ever? In Operation Raccoon City, it shows up as Nicholai too. The only places I have seen it transliterated like that are fan-created websites, like the Wiki and such. I might have missed something, of course!

I actually prefer Nikolai Zinoviev’s spelling to Nicholai Ginovaef because it seems to be the accurate one, but Nicholai Ginovaef is the official localisation and I’d rather stick to it to avoid confusion. I was the crazy person who contacted the OTW so they would fix AO3′s tags for him, because I suspected this confusion would go on, and I also understand that each fan prefers to use one version or the other - especially if Russian is their mother tongue, I guess? I know I would write names like Ramón Salazar or Bitores Méndez with the proper accent marks, even if they are not in the original game. Though I also understand that’s very minor compared to completely different spellings.

Capcom is super weird with names, and they don’t always do their research for this kind of stuff (I’m looking at YOU, Resident Evil 4), so I can totally see them butchering the whole Nicholai/Nikolai and just going on with the wrong one for the rest of their lives, instead of fixing it 😂

Anyway, anon, sorry for the long rant. Languages are my business so I find this all strangely fascinating. But tl;dr, this is where the confusion may come from - but the actual transliteration of the name in Capcom approved material is Nicholai Ginovaef, and the remake just doubled down on that.

"Andrei Rublev" (Criterion)

It's funny how classic directors can ebb and flow into the national conversation. I feel like I've heard Andrei Tarkovsky's name more in 2018 than in many recent years. Some years everyone thinks everything is "Hitchockian" or "Kubrickian." Perhaps Film Twitter is expanding its auteur vocabulary because I've seen several recent films, including "Annihilation" and "High Life," compared to Tarkovsky's work. Did Criterion somehow know this was going to happen, thereby timing their HD upgrade of his epic "Andrei Rublev" for late September? Probably not, but you never know. As for the release, it's a beauty, including both versions of the film, a few documentaries, and new interviews. Some of the Criterion upgrades are merely that (imports of special features with an HD transfer) but this is more like a brand new release. After all, Andrei Tarkovsky has never been hotter.

"Leave No Trace"

Debra Granik's first film since "Winter's Bone" remains one of my favorites of 2018 and loses none of its remarkable power on second viewing at home. It's just as phenomenal as I remember when I saw it at Sundance. This is a gentle, truthful tale about a father and daughter growing apart, a division deepened by his severe PTSD. Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie gives one of the most genuine performances of the year, and Ben Foster nearly matches, finding a more subtle register than the one for which he's most well-known. This is a beautiful movie, one that I hope everyone gets a chance to see.

"The Naked Prey" (Criterion)

Academy Award nominee Cornel Wilde stars in this adventure film, which he also directed and produced, reportedly based on the life of John Colter, an explorer chased by Blackfoot warriors in Wyoming. The script for "Naked Prey" was Oscar-nominated but if you're thinking this is a relatively obscure choice for Criterion, especially when compared to the other two films in this column, you're not wrong. The company often includes at least one film a month that you probably haven't heard of or at least haven't seen in a very long time, to go with it's more widely-acknowledged collection of classics. Such is the case with "Naked Prey," a film that reportedly earned mixed reviews on its release but is now considered influential both in its focus and brutality. "A Raisin in the Sun" (Criterion)

When Lorraine Hansberry wrote A Raisin in the Sun in the '50s, do you think she had any idea it would become a staple of American theater, and regularly adapted for film and television? The play has really stood the test of time, and it's still produced in near-constant rotation around the country, but Criterion has gone with the original, and still-best, film production of it, starring Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, Claudia McNeil, Diana Sands, and Louis Gossett Jr. Regular readers of this column know that I'm always curious about the timing of Criterion releases. So why "Raisin" now? Well, it's clear that the themes of the play still resonate today, and perhaps the company is responding to criticism that their collection is largely full of white filmmakers telling white stories. Whatever the reason, "A Raisin in the Sun" remains essential to the story of American theatre in the '50s and '60s and this is a great way to bring this seminal work to a wider audience.

"Solo: A Star Wars Story"

If you ask a certain sector of the movie-going public, they'll tell you that "Solo: A Star Wars Story" was a massive bomb. They'll claim that negative feelings about "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" caused a backlash against "Solo" and the box office reflected that, leading to the lowest-grossing "Star Wars" film of the modern era (and that includes the prequels). The truth is that "Solo" likely wasn't as impacted by "TLJ" as it was over-saturation. There was a time when a "Star Wars" movie was an event, which is inherently more difficult when one is practically still playing in theaters as a new one comes out. There's also the fact that, sorry, "Solo" isn't very good. One can see the struggle behind the scenes that led to Ron Howard being brought in to helm the pic, and the result is a film that's only sporadically entertaining (and horribly under-lit). The Blu-ray is solid, as they often are for "Star Wars" films, but I think the lesson to take from "Solo" is that any universe loses its luster if we visit it too often and the best thing this franchise could do after "Episode IX" would be to go away for a little while. Absence makes the Wookie heart grow fonder.

"Three Identical Strangers"

2018 has been an amazing year for documentaries. Films like "RBG," "Won't You Be My Neighbor?," and now "Free Solo" have become surprising arthouse hits, finding devoted fans. I'm hoping that the trend brings people to one of the best docs of the year, a hit at Sundance and the Chicago Critics Film Festival earlier this year, "Three Identical Strangers." This is one of those WTF documentaries that keeps unfolding new secrets and revelations as it progresses. Without spoiling anything, the craziest part of this story is not what you think it is. It's not merely that three identical triplets found each other after years apart. There's more to this tale than any writer could possibly devise. Check it out and see for yourself.

"X-Men Trilogy"

The MCU may be thriving but the "X-Men" franchise is in a weird phase. The "Dark Phoenix" trailer dropped last week only for the movie's release date to then be pushed back. People just don't seem as excited about "X-Men" as they used to be, but that shouldn't stop superhero fans from going back to the beginning, Bryan Singer's wildly influential first film about Wolverine, Storm, Magneto, and company. Christopher Nolan gets a lot of credit for influencing where the market is now, but Sam Raimi and Bryan Singer deserve just as much, if not more, for creating the templates for the modern superhero movie. The first two films in this trilogy are phenomenal, and they hold up beautifully in these new 4K editions. The third film? It was horrible then and it's horrible now, another film that can be used as a template for what NOT to do in the superhero genre.

Skam Italia episode 1 reaction

I was on the fence to whether I would watch/react to this one, because a) some of the production choices turned me off, namely the Sana casting and b) this will be the fourth time I have seen S1 unfold and like, what more can I say about it, really

but I decided to watch because all of these remakes have been helping me learn about film-making and storytelling and how the same material can play differently depending on cinematography, music, acting, editing, etc. for better or worse. and well, I had a lot of thoughts on it.

Clip 1 - one day this monologue will simply be Jonas reading the lyrics to All Star by Smash Mouth

For a moment I wondered if the opening monologue wasn’t going to be Eva’s writing, and she was reading it to Jonas (Giovanni) and he was going to give her some kinda condescending mansplain-y constructive criticism. Turns out it wasn’t but that might actually be an interesting way to adapt that scene (although the idea of watching this scene for a fifth time is not ideal).

Honestly I’ve seen so many conflicting takes about the opening speech that I’m just going to accept it’s something that I can’t get the significance of as a non-Italian and leave it at that. I do appreciate that they did change it to be something that’s specifically Italian.

This Eva is very … cute? I don’t mean that in a derogatory way. Her personality seems a little meeker and marshmallowier than Emma’s or even OG Eva or Hanna. 

@skamremakesfromhell mentioned this in a post that Skam France and Skam Italia make it more obvious that the Eva and Ingrid characters were once friendly and OG Skam and Druck keep it more ambiguous. Most people I’ve seen react to Skam initially assume that Ingrid and Sara are like the school’s mean girls/popular clique rather than girls who have a history with Eva. Personally I prefer the ambiguity because it subverts expectations (especially when you’ve seen a million teen dramas featuring the requisite clique of popular bullies) but I guess you always learn by the end of the episode that Eva and Laura have a history so they don’t drag it out too much.

Eva waving at them is charming, but maybe a little much, though that’s kinda why I think she’s a cuter character. She’s the only one of the Evas trying to get a reaction out of the other girls. It makes you wonder what she thought would happen. Did she want a wave back? She really wants Laura to still like her. Also, notable that it’s the Sara character (I think) who gives her the finger, not Laura.

Also Giovanni is the only one of the Jonases to not notice Eva looking at Ingrid/Laura despite her being the only one to wave. Depending on your POV, it’s because he’s so wrapped up in explaining himself that he doesn’t notice Eva’s little moment of distress, or that his back is turned to Laura so he simply doesn’t notice. Or a combo of both.

I did like the visual choice of having Martino behind the bars (trapped in the friend zooooooooone) as well as his line, which according to the subtitles, is something like “in a couple there are no secrets but there also aren’t secrets between friends” which is some decent foreshadowing.

The banter seemed like Eva was more cool with them teasing her without that undertone of ganging up on her, or at least she played it like she was very amused by it. 

Clip 2 - chilling at home

I liked seeing Eva going about her evening alone, rummaging for food, that kind of casual solitude when you’re on your own.

Good job making that video chat look realistic.

No hate toward the actor himself but how old is Martino IRL … I think he’s fine performance-wise so far and he and Eva had some nice friendly chemistry in this conversation, but that dude just does not seem like a teenager. Which means some of the stuff he does later is going to look worse coming from someone who seems old enough to know better.

I looked him up and he’s like 20-21 in real life, and color me surprised. Not a teenager, but not as old as I would’ve guessed.

Martino being like “aw come on let me see” when Gio shows up, lmao you obviously do not want to see what happens next, bro. A girl is going to be a turn off for you.

Tiny changes of little importance - the first Sara to get a septum instead of fake lashes, and the first Jonas to enter through the front door like a normal person rather than climbing through the window/balcony.

I think it was a nice detail that they established that Eva is deliberately avoiding events and parties because of Laura. It adds to her loneliness and lack of friends, and it’ll be a bigger step of character development when she starts going out.

How long were the boys at Elia’s? Or did they go over there two days in a row? Because the first clip is definitely meant to be Friday and this one is Saturday, unless it was originally supposed to be the same day and they changed it for whatever reason. Gio not answering his phone during that time period is way different than not answering for like 5-6 hours. 

Giovanni calling her a koala is cute. Is this a specific Eva-and-Gio thing, or is this typical slang, like do Italians call each other koalas? That’s adorable.

Gio, they teach you in Lying 101 not to give more details than you need to.

His acting is a little odd here and I’m not sure if it’s shaky acting or a decent job of portraying someone lying out of his ass. For now I’ll be generous and go with the latter.

I thought the chemistry between them was a little off, but well, at least they seemed cozy when they were about to get it on. 

I was kind of confused as to why they showed the phone lighting up at first except, duh, it was to show Gio was lying about his phone dying. Not sure how I feel about that shot? Seems like too much POV breakage/hinting to the audience. I think it’s a good idea but maybe they could frame it in a more subtle way, like Eva and Giovanni are going at it in the frame and only eagle-eyed viewers would spot the phone.

Also I see that it’s Martino trying to get in touch, so I find that better and more subtle than if it were like … Laura. Martino texting in itself is NBD, it’s just that Gio’s phone is not dead.

Clip 3 - theater kids

This is not a relevant observation in the slightest but I’m entertained by the little details, like when Eva snacks on that cracker/cookie thing you can see a giant-ass crumb fall down her sweater from a distance, or in the previous clip there’s some fuzz stuck to her foot when Gio wraps it around her waist. It’s really really small stuff and probably not intentional, tbh, but I do like when Skam keeps things not perfect. Life is full of crumbs and fuzz, embrace it. 

I love the theater kids and their quirks in every version. These two are giving off middle-aged office manager vibes. 

Again, it is nice for Eva to consider a social event in line with her avoiding them because of Laura.

Clip 4 - Giovanni ruining the couple’s getaway 

I think this is the first time an Eva has called out a Jonas for being boring and not partying. Which, I mean, depending on the company I would probably prefer doing something mundane with some good friends than going to a party with a bunch of assholes.

And I thought Druck made it more obvious, Skam Italia just blatantly says Martino’s mom is crazy.

The acting is weird because I wouldn’t say it’s stiff, exactly, but a lot of it is very … acting. The handshake between Eva and Gio is cute, though.

Clip 5 - party time

Eva, I hope you charged your phone before you went out (9%).

So the getting dressed scene definitely felt, uh. A little male-gazey in a way that the other versions haven’t. Not Michael Bay making Transformers movies one-handed level of male gaze, just enough that I noticed. In those other getting ready scenes, the Evas were shown in varying states of undress, but it felt like a practical thing and not for titillation. This time around, there are definitely some pans up Eva’s body clad only in her bra and underwear and some full body shots (and it’s in shadow but there’s one shot where I thought she was completely topless, though in context I don’t think she is). Not a huge fan of that. At least it didn’t last long.

This is unrelated but this is something I deeply appreciated about Skam, I would not have said the girls were sexualized. Even in scenes, for instance, when Eva and Noora were shown in their underwear and T-shirts, it was casual and not sexy. I’m pretty sure the only nudity on the show was dudes and something like Even walking out of the hotel room naked is the total opposite of a sexualized moment.

Eva’s mom comes home mid-montage. I can’t quite get a read on their relationship yet? Eva is not open with her about where she’s going, but her mom still lets her go out. But Eva having both her parents in the picture is a significant change.

Oh God I love that fucking theater guy who dresses and acts like your car salesman uncle on a family wedding dance floor after a few drinks.

I know Laura’s words are chosen for cruelty not accuracy, but Eva’s eyeliner doesn’t seem particularly excessive, except for being smudged.

Well, Eleonora, that was gay. That was really, really gay. The gayest Noora intro yet. A round of applause.

Why did you fuck off home immediately after gently touching a stranger’s face instead of making further conversation, though? Or is that part of your red-lipped allure? Now I’m imagining Eleonora just constantly fixing girls’ hair and brushing eyelashes off their cheeks whenever she’s in line at McDonald’s or buying toilet paper, then vanishing and leaving a trail of broken hearts across Europe. 

The shot of Eva in front of the mirror, all fractured into multiple Evas, is some good stuff. Eva giving Vilde (Silvia?) a hug was also nice. Again, this Eva’s a marshmallow.

Legitimately one of the best parts of all these remakes is seeing all the Chrises/Alexes/Sams/Fedes be thrilled and bond instantly over their shared names.

Oh but she makes up for it by having Boy Fede call her a dick tease in front of Laura and Sara.

Boy Fede was kind of hilarious in a douchey way.

The text message afterwards has Eva downplaying the party’s shittiness to Gio, btw, saying she left after she saw people doing the train/conga. Sparing herself further embarrassment.

General Comments:

I’m not happy with casting an actress who is apparently both white and non-Muslim as Sana. Like all Skams I’m watching this on Google Drive/unofficial websites, but if this were say, a film showing in theaters, I wouldn’t buy a ticket for it on that basis. If it were a show I could watch or stream legally I wouldn’t give it the views. It’s really not excusable. Actually one of the most obnoxious things is that they also had this Sana wear a hijab. That annoys me even more than if they’d just said she was a Muslim who chose not to wear one. Probably because a hijabi actress has like … barely any opportunities for roles that will let her wear one.

Unpopular (?) opinion: if we give them the extreme benefit of the doubt that they searched and searched and just couldn’t find a single Muslim actress for the role (and I doubt this is what happened but going along with this hypothetical situation), then it probably would have been better if they rewrote the Sana character to be another racial, ethnic, or religious minority, played by an actress from that group. Because Muslim representation is of course important, especially in the current political climate, and I don’t mean to minimize that at all, but there are other minority groups who could have their stories told accurately, which is part of Skam’s importance. 

Also, there’s one thing I want to address about the use of offensive language and whether it’s justified because it’s realistic/accurate. I am not commenting directly on the stuff seen in the Skam Italia trailer because we don’t yet know the context and whether it’ll be called out, and I’ve also seen some conflicting translations of it. But on a general note, I don’t think that “realism” should be an automatic get-out-of-jail-free card for characters saying offensive things. It depends on how it is handled within the text. I am sure that there are Norwegian teenagers who say much, much more offensive things and use slurs more frequently than the main kids in Skam. But Julie chose to present our protagonists as largely open-minded and willing to grow. For all we talk about Skam’s focus on realism, it often presents an optimistic, even idealistic worldview. Feuds end in peaceful dialogue and understanding. Worst case scenarios are averted. Friends usually support each other in times of need. Hardly anyone is a true villain. It’s debatable how much of that is realistic. But it’s hopeful, and it’s the model that teenagers need. 

Think of it like this, an admittedly extreme example: Julie could choose to set American Skam in a conservative town and made all the characters Trump supporters - because hey, realism!  That is an accurate representation of certain parts of the United States. But I’m guessing most of us wouldn’t enjoy watching the version where Trump fans are our heroes and they’re never challenged on their beliefs. There are some shows where I can tolerate, even enjoy terrible people being terrible, but that’s never been the appeal of Skam.

Anyway that’s my limit of hot’n’spicy discourse for now. I’m trying to stay in my lane but I had to get that out since the Sana thing especially is unavoidable.

Overall the show felt distinct enough that I had some thoughts on it besides just being the 4th version of these scenes that I’ve watched. 

The acting is a mixed bag for me so far, some moments worked and some didn’t. I thought Martino was decent and the non-Eva girl squad was fine. Not sold on Gio yet. Eva herself had some moments I enjoyed but when it got more serious it fell a little flat. I do think she has a likeable personality, though.

The visual style of the show is certainly striking. It’s flashier than OG Skam but I like the colors and the energy.

I’m a completionist so I will probably keep watching because that is how my brain works.

 Updated gif-making tutorial: 

making and using actions to make hq gifs quickly and efficiently, watermarking, adding text/subtitle, sharpening, coloring for natural base coloring on videos

I do not use .ts files for kpop performances (just .mp4 720 or 1080), nor do I use topaz to sharpen. 

You will need:

A computer (I use a PC so the hot keys i’ve listed aren’t the same as on macs)

A video editing program that can split your video into smaller sections (DVDvideosoft’s free studio is what I use, but anything similar will do)

Photoshop CS6 extended or a more recent version (you need to have the video timeline function)

a half hour or an hour to make your first set with all the actions specific to your blog url, afterwards full 4-8 piece gifsets should take around 15 minutes or less to make (if your computer is cooperating lol)

We will make actions to:

watermark

convert to timeline and smart object

add a text box with stroke and drop shadow for both 268px and 540px wide gifs for w/e font you want to use

video used // link to finished gifset // there are some images to help in the tutorial, you can ask if you have any questions!!

after the first run of the tutorial where you make your actions, your process should be:

Cut your video into a clip short enough to import into photoshop

Import your frames

Split your frames into multiple documents, one for each gif in the set

crop and resize your gifs

Color your gifs

watermark (action)

convert to video timeline and smart object (action)

add text (action)

sharpen (action)

save for web

1. Cut your video into a clip short enough to import into photoshop:

For most youtube videos which are either 24fps or 29fps you can import up to 15 seconds at a time, for those that are 60fps the limit is around 7 seconds

2. Import your frames:

If you’re making gifs from a performance or a short drama scene, it’s faster to import all of your frames onto one document at once and then copy the frames on to multiple separate documents for the multiple gifs in the set

file -> import -> video frames to layers

make sure that the “Make Frame Animation” option is checked 

3. Split your frames into multiple documents, one for each gif in the set

select the frames you want for your first gif (click first frame you want -> hold shift and click the last frame you want)

copy frames (go to the drop down menu for the timeline window -> copy frames)

duplicate any layer from the first document onto a new separate document (right click any layer -> duplicate layer -> document: new -> name the document “[your gifset name] [gif number]”

create frame animation on your new document (timeline window -> create frame animation) (if it says create video timeline instead, use the dropdown menu next to the button to change it to frame animation)

paste the frames onto this new document (timeline drop down menu -> paste frames -> replace frames)

change your frames’ timing (select all frames -> click the time under one of the individual frames -> other -> put your time) for 24 or 29 fps video I use .06; for 60fps I use .03

delete the frames from the original document, repeat for the next gif within the remaining frames on your original document

4. crop and resize your gifs

select the crop tool

chose your dimensions

crop all your gifs to the same dimension ratio

resize your gifs (ctrl + alt + i) for 3 columns it’s 177,178,177; for 2 columns it’s 268px, for 1 column it’s 540px

5. Color your gifs

I usually color to make everything as neutral as possible before doing anything specific so this is just telling how to make a neutral coloring.

make a curves layer on top of all your other layers (layer -> new adjustment layer -> curves)

color adjust for black click the black eyedropper on the curves layer and then find a spot on your gif that should be black and click it (if it becomes too dark, hold alt and click on a spot that comes up black until most of the image is now white) (image below)

color adjust for white do the same with the white eyedropper (if it’s too light, hold alt and click the white areas until the image is mostly black) (adobe’s tutorial to help you out if you need)

make a brightness/contrast layer (layer -> new adjustment layer -> brightness contrast) and add a little bit more contrast depending on your image

add vibrance (layer -> new adjustment layer -> vibrance/saturation) boost the vibrance slightly

(personal taste to make skin tone clearer and the whites of eyes brighter) make midtones warmer; highlights and shadows cooler (layer -> new adjustment layer -> color balance -> adjust layer according to your image) 

brighten highlights and darken shadows (layer -> new adjustment layer -> selective color -> blacks: add black -> whites: subtract black) 

group all your coloring layers together (select your coloring layers -> create group -> leave the name as “group 1″)

duplicate this group onto all of your open gif documents (right click -> duplicate group -> document: [your next gif file name] -> repeat for all)

6. watermark + recording your watermark action

people on tumblr suck, people on the internet suck, people on other websites suck, weheartit sucks, etc...... you want to have your url on the things you make so people don’t steal your work right?!! we’re gonna watermark EVERYTHING we make ever

(this is going to be the first action we make!! woo hoo!! you don’t want to have to be remaking this layer every time you make gifs do you)

making the action:

open your actions window (window -> actions)

create new actions set (click the icon that looks like a folder on the actions window -> name this set “gifs” or something else you’ll remember)

make sure you’re not on the first frame of your animation, any other will do

record new action (hit the circular icon on the actions menu -> name this action “watermark”) 

select first frame of animation

create new text layer at the top left corner (click the text tool -> click the top left corner of your canvas)

type your url in an nice and easy to read font (I use myriad pro semibold italic at 9px height)

click the check on the text editing panel to finish making the layer

change the opacity to 30% in the layers panel 

stop recording the action (click the square on the actions window)

using the action: 

click the “watermark” action in your “gifs” action set

make sure you’ve selected your top layer (which should be your color group)

click the play button in the actions window (now your watermark is on your first gif)

duplicate this layer onto the rest of your gifs, always as the top layer

7: convert to timeline and smart object (action)

we’re gonna be making another action to this (yay less work for future us)

making the action:

before you make the action make sure you’re not on your first frame

record a new action, name it convert

select all layers (ctrl + alt + a)

deselect your watermark layer (ctrl + click the text layer named [your url])

select your first frame

convert to timeline (click the convert to video timeline icon at the bottom of the timeline window)

convert to smart object (right click your layers -> convert to smart object) 

stop recording, you should be left with a timeline animation with two layers, one is the animation smart object which will now be named “group 1″ and the other is your watermark layer on top

using the action:

play the action (that’s all)

you should be left with a timeline animation with two layers, one is the animation smart object which will now be named “group 1″ and the other is your watermark layer on top

do this on every document for your gif set

8. adding text (action)

make the action for 268px gifs:

on a 268px wide document with a video timeline make a guide at 134px vertical (view -> new guide -> “134px” vertical)

start recording the action, name it “text 268″

create a new text layer on the guide at the top of the box, centered text, 12point font (I use myriad pro semibold italic with tracking at 50)

double click the layer, add stroke at 2px, add drop shadow

stop recording

make the action for 540 px gifs:

on a 540px wide document with a video timeline make a guide at 270px vertical (view -> new guide -> “270px” vertical)

start recording the action, name it “text 540″

create a new text layer on the guide at the top of the box, centered text, 12point font (I use myriad pro semibold italic with tracking at 50)

double click the layer, add stroke at 2px, add drop shadow

stop recording

using the actions:

use the appropriate sized action for what you’re making, play the action after steps 1-7 of your gif are done 

use your text tool to put in the text for your gif

hold shift and click to slide the subtitle to the spot you want either at the top or bottom of your gif while keeping it centered

9: sharpening: 

everyone sharpens differently, so you might want to change this up a bit and make a new sharpen action on your own, but this is mine [download]

there’s a low opacity motion blur layer in there so it adds a bit of softness to the edges 

to use the one that I included a download of, select the smart object named “group 1″, return to the start of your video timeline, play the action on all the documents for your gifs

10. save for web

file -> save for web

set looping to forever

save all the gifs

Hellboy film in Russia replaces Stalin with Hitler

The latest remake of Hellboy hit Russian cinemas on 11 April. Directed by Neil Marshall, the film features a demon who switches satanic allegiance to protect humanity from evil.

However, audiences in Russia discovered that in their version of the film a reference to Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin had been changed to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

Please note there are minor spoilers below.

In a line of expository dialogue, the film’s titular character reveals that one of the supporting antagonists, Russian folklore character Baba Yaga, once attempted to resurrect the spirit of Stalin.

The original line, uttered by Hellboy upon confronting Baba Yaga, is: “I recall you tried to raise Stalin’s ghost from a necropolis.”

In the film’s Russian-language version, according to small independent TV channel Dozhd, the line goes: “I want to remind you, you tried to raise Hitler’s spirit from a necropolis”.

Theatres screening the English-language version of the film complemented it with Russian subtitles. During this scene, the audio for Stalin’s name was bleeped, while the subtitles said “Hitler”.

The only other word censored in the film was a Russian curse word uttered by another supporting antagonist, Russian mystic Grigory Rasputin. All English swear words were left untouched.

In Russia, the film was aired to audiences of 18 and older. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) gave it an age rating of 15.

This is not the first case of Stalin-related censorship in Russian film theatres.

In 2018, the Russian Culture Ministry withdrew the film distribution certificate for the UK comedy film Death of Stalin.

The film was described by Russian officials as “disgusting” and “extremist”.

Russian social media users were unappreciative of the name substitution in Hellboy.

“Level of idiotism in the situation: 1953 per cent,” one Twitter user said, referring to the year of Stalin’s death.

“Apparently, in Russia, Stalin’s name cannot be taken in vain,” tweeted another.

“It’s just that, I am sure, Germans would not change Hitler’s name to Stalin,” a comment on popular Russian social network VK says.

‘Why would Baba Yaga resurrect Hitler?’

Film industry news website kg-portal.ru described the story as “seemingly very funny”.

“Turns out, we are now censoring Stalin’s last name. That’s one. Turns out, Hitler and Stalin are approximately the same thing, if you look at the problem from the distributor’s point of view. That’s two,” the website said.

The film’s antagonist and would-be resurrector of Stalin, Baba Yaga, is a Russian folklore character.

She is usually depicted as an elderly hag living in a hut standing on giant chicken legs, a trait that made it into the film. Her role in Russian fairy tales is often left ambiguous, as she can both hinder and support the protagonist on their journey, depending on her own motives.

“Why would Baba Yaga resurrect Hitler? There is no sense! She is Russian!” kg-portal.ru wonders.

According to a recent poll conducted by independent public research organisation Levada Centre, 70% of Russians believe that Stalin played a positive role in Russia’s history.

The poll also showed that 6% of respondents regarded Stalin with sympathy, 4% with admiration and 41% with respect.

MEGOGO Distribution, the film’s distributor, did not respond to a BBC request for comment.

Rumor: Resident Evil 8 to be called Resident Evil 8: Village

We recently informed you regarding some new details of the upcoming Resident Evil 8. According to BHd, the title will feature the subtitle, Village.  This is possibly a working title, meaning it could end up being different.

BHd also provided some information about the characters. First of all, the protagonist will probably be the same guy from Resident Evil 7. You know, Ethan, that guy no one knows. Chris Redfield is also back, and he will have an integral part in the game.

Chris appears in flashbacks surrounding Ethan and his girlfriend. You know, Mia, that crazy bitch that stabbed you and cut off your freaking hand. Thank god for convenient surgical staplers.

Ethan and Mia now have a baby, but it is unclear what the baby has to do with the narrative. Also, Chris doesn’t look the same as before. This time he looks less heroic than he usually does. He can be seen shooting at Ethan and Mia in a flashback sequence. Don’t worry, I’m pretty sure the baby survives.

Lastly, it looks like Capcom is playing with the concept of inventory management yet again. According to BHd, Capcom is testing both a Resident Evil 7 style UI alongside a Resident Evil 4 style.

So maybe Resident Evil 4 is also getting a remake? Maybe, but until then take everything with a grain of salt. We will make sure to let you know if anything else comes up.

Despite being over 40 years old, M*A*S*H is still considered to be one of most popular television shows out there.  With memorable characters and surprisingly serious moments amidst the comedy. Though the comedic elements weren’t always great by today’s standards, it was a unique show that hasn’t truly been replicated since.

At a glance, what the road-sign in this meme claims sounds ridiculous and even creepy.  But it’s made funny by the superimposed presence of Corporal “Radar” O’Reilly from M*A*S*H peeking out from behind the bushes near the road, making a pun out of the sign as a result.  Though in reality, speed checks using radar scans aren’t entirely far-fetched. 

According to Mental Floss, police officers will fly over stretches of highway in small aircraft and either “Use VASCAR systems” which are basically radar guns or stopwatches to clock a vehicle’s speed before radioing a ground officer to pull the vehicle over if it goes over the speed limit.  Nevertheless, that hasn’t stopped the Internet from turning this concept into a hilarious meme.

9 Trying To Sleep

Being the company clerk for the fictional 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital stationed in South Korea during the Korean War, Radar had to keep track of a lot of things (which is another reason why the previous meme is funny).  So naturally, he got easily worried and because he wasn’t the most self-confident character in the cast of M*A*S*H that made him susceptible to suggestions from more charismatic characters like Captain “Hawkeye” Pierce.

Hence, this meme is appropriately funny by having Radar personify a person trying to go to bed while Hawkeye is whispering something to him as the personification of the person’s inner fears about how everything can possibly go wrong.  It’s not only fitting of their characters but their facial expressions fit the meme’s subtitles quite well.

8 Closed The Garage

In keeping with the theme of hilariously appropriate facial expressions, we’ve got Major Margaret Houlihan making this face which can only be described as being mildly confused yet clearly preoccupied about something.  Hence, we have a tagline that seems like the most specific yet relatable scenario that would lead her to make this kind of expression thus making it funny.

Then like the previous meme, this one also fits Margaret’s character as she was arguably one of the most well-organized officers in M*A*S*H.  This is despite the fact that she was constantly flirted with by the guys and actively had an affair with a married man.

7 Let’s See

Aside from his charisma and tendency to make witty remarks, Hawkeye didn’t usually play by the rules at the 4077th MASH camp.  In fact, he was even downright lazy at times as his facial expression in this meme indicates.

This notion is further assisted by the meme’s funny tagline which lists various chores that have to be done with an abrupt stop by the ‘Or’ part of the sentence.  While it’s not explicitly implied what’s going to happen instead, it probably has to do with drinking since we see Hawkeye holding a full martini glass which makes sense as he had alcoholic tendencies in M*A*S*H.

6 Surgery Is Finally Over

Since Hawkeye was the 4077th MASH camp’s chief surgeon, he was almost always involved in most of the surgeries that happened when wounded and/or dying soldiers were flown in.  Because surgery is an intensive and delicate process, it’s not only stressful but also exhausting.

So the joke in this M*A*S*H meme is that after Hawkeye performs surgery, he falls into a deep sleep.  Then what makes the meme funnier is that the person featured in this meme is “Dan” Avidan from the two-man music group Ninja Sex Party and the increasingly popular YouTube video gaming channel Game Grumps, who was either sleepy or on the verge of sleep in several videos of Game Grumps.

5 Reposting

By its definition, a meme is an image that is repeated over and over again regardless of its original context.  However, in an age where people’s attention spans are growing increasingly shorter a meme can become ‘old’ by Internet standards pretty quickly.

That concept in turn serves as the basis for the humor in this meme, which uses a notably hilarious still-frame from the third season M*A*S*H episode “Adam’s Ribs”.  In it, Hawkeye gets fed up with the food served at the camp and starts chanting “We want something else!” making it the perfect metaphor for this meme’s tagline about what it feels like to see the same thing reposted multiple times.

4 Beaver Biscuits

Though Hawkeye was known to make sarcastic remarks that ultimately came off as hilariously witty in relation to the situation at hand, Colonel Sherman T. Potter often made exclamations that were funny in of themselves.  An example is the one this meme uses, which sounds so strange on its own that it becomes funny in combination with Potter’s angry face.

Of course, this was just one of many hilarious exclamations that Potter used in duration of his time on M*A*S*H.  After he replaced Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake as the 4077th MASH camp’s commanding officer, he quickly became one of the most popular characters on the show and his strangely funny exclamations may have had something to do with it.

3 I Am Hawkeye

Because Hawkeye is such a distinct name, it’s hard to forget.  Yet who people associate it with has changed across several generations, as various characters in movies and TV shows of varying genres have been called Hawkeye.  This meme highlights a few examples with Hawkeye from the 1992 remake of The Last of the Mohicans at the top, followed by the superhero Hawkeye from The Avengers, and then ending at Hawkeye from M*A*S*H.

The main humor of this meme comes from the subtitles, as each guy claims to be the ‘true’ Hawkeye with M*A*S*H’s Hawkeye pointing at himself and implying he’s the one the others got their name from.  While this is true time-wise as M*A*S*H predates The Last of the Mohicans 1992 movie, let alone The Avengers, the book The Last of the Mohicans was based on was written in the 1800s making its protagonist Hawkeye technically older than the others.  Still, this meme is funny for its references and truthfulness to an extent.

2 Ermahgerd

One of the Internet’s most popular memes, “Ermahgerd” is an exaggerated misspelling of the phrase “Oh my god” to coincide with the girl in the photo’s excited expression which is so cringe-worthy that it’s funny to look at.  Now in the original meme, the girl was holding up books from the horror series Goosebumps with the tagline “Gersberms / Mah fravrit berks” according to Know Your Meme.

In this meme, though, the book covers have been replaced with M*A*S*H DVD covers.  Yet the effect is the same as this meme’s tagline has the same exaggerated misspelled words as the original meme, and the girl’s face makes it all the more funny.

1 Scared, Potter?

Much like Hawkeye, the name Potter has changed in terms of association with different fictional characters among various generations of people.  While most people today associate it with the titular protagonist in the Harry Potter franchise, Sherman T. Potter from M*A*S*H predates the former by at least two decades.

So the humor of the above meme comes from mixing the association of these two different characters by having a still-frame of the Dueling Club scene from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets intercut by M*A*S*H’s Potter making one of his weirdly funny exclamations.  This in turn makes it hilarious for older and younger generations of M*A*S*H fans.
