here's something I wish more people understood:

the police are never required to read you your Miranda rights.

"but if they don't then the arrest is invalid!" no. false. stop saying this. Miranda rights only apply to questioning. if you haven't been properly Mirandized, the police can't use your statements in court.

they are still allowed to question you! they can still write down what you say and go investigate it. they just can't use it in court, but maybe they don't care, because you gave them a tip they were able to use anyway.

there are also times when they aren't particularly interested in questioning you right away, so you can just sit in jail without being told a damn thing and that's legal. there's a time limit on how long they can keep you before charging you, but once they've got a charge they don't exactly have to be in a rush.

now a lot of times cops will go ahead and read you your rights at arrest because then it's over with, but people seem to have concluded from this that it's illegal to arrest someone without Mirandizing them first, which just isn't true.

I feel like even a lot of people who don't trust cops are not aware of how much unacceptable shit is perfectly legal for cops to do. Like, you think it must be illegal for them to lie and coerce and mistreat people but it's actually much worse than that. They're violating human rights with the full consent of the law.

Bestfriend/Ex Costia (not that Clarke knows who this disconcertingly effervescent beauty is)

All she knows is that she seems... fun.

Like annoyingly fun, at least as far as Clarke can tell in those early weeks after having just moved to town. In that pocket of time when she tells herself that the only reason she keeps walking past the holistic shop on the corner every morning is because it's on the way to the local bakery that the strange little shopkeeper happened to mention has the best blueberry muffins (she doesn't even eat breakfast.)

(She doesn't even particularly like blueberries)

In the pocket of time when, oddly, the highlight of her days is that 2.5 second interaction - if it can even be called that - when the said exceedingly pretty shopkeeper glances up from her book where she reads behind the counter and smiles at Clarke as she passes.

Sometimes tossing in a mouthed, "Hi."

Sometimes just a soft wave as she passes.

Except of course for the days when she walks past and "Lexa" (or so says the business card Clarke has looked at enough times that the edges have kinda started to curl 😕) is too preoccupied chatting and laughing and smiling and, again, laughing (like a lot. Like a concerning amount simply because no one is that funny) to notice Clarke at all.

Not to mention the days when she passes by and the pair is huddled together by the register in the back, a rogue arm slung over one or the other's shoulders, heads pressed together tight as they seem to read from the same book.

Not that it even matters or causes any kind of bizzare drop in her stomach or anything because Clarke is not even interested.

She's too preoccupied with figuring herself out to even feel anything that she can put a tangible name to when she happens to take a stroll down to the pier just to turn right back around and go home when she spots Lexa and her... whatever, sitting on the exact same bench her and Lexa had just eaten lunch at for the first time the day before.

The girl just seems nice.

And funny.

And it is kind of odd that Clarke sees her hanging around semi-frequently, and yet her new friend never seems to mention the woman at all.

Not that Clarke does either.

Anyway it's certainly not jealousy that she feels. Because that would be insane. She barely even knows Lexa and their fledgling friendship is just that: a friendship. And so it absolutely does not feel like a warm little victory on the friendship-front when she asks Lexa to take an afternoon walk with her in the woods, just to be asked to hang on a second while she makes a quick call because Lexa has to "cancel plans with someone."

After almost two years of planning, I finally went to my first Creation Con. And what a joy it was. #ChiCon 2024 was incredible, not only for the onstage twirling of Jared across Jensen's shoulder's, (which I did see and will never forget), but for all of my obsessive planning paying off in the best way possible. Thanks to eBay, Red Bubble, and one dedicated woman at Wayward Plaids, I was prepared to go to the con dressed as Sam. With my jelly bracelets, the purple dog t-shirt, the iconic blue and gray striped shirt, and the brown Puma's (which fit me and I did indeed wear). As I walked up for the first picture, which was J2 with Baby, I went completely non-verbal, which was slightly problematic as I needed to at least be able to say hello to them. But one of the fellow con goers had suggested I take the shoe off and have it in my hand, which I did. And Jared, being the incredible human that he is, gave me the biggest smile, took the shoe from me, and remarked that it was the real one. All I could do was smile and nod as words were completely gone. He then commented on both shirts, and as I had apparently forgotten pictures needed to be taken, he turned me around so that I was facing the camera. It was then that I remembered what I had also forgotten to do, and turned to give a huge smile to Jensen, who smiled back, said hi, and I am quite certain I melted a little. They pulled me in for a double one-sided hug, and Chris took the picture. Which turned out better than I had hoped it might. Standing between J2, wearing one shoe, and having one socked foot on display.

The next day, I had the J2 inside photo op, and as I was a little less terrified, I actually managed a few words, or more specifically, a request. I walked up to Jensen and asked if I could please have a double squish hug. The man smiled at me and said, "Sure thing, darlin'." In his amazing soft Texas drawl, and I ended up getting my second amazing photo of the con. While I never would have known without getting the digital copies of the pictures that feature the uncropped versions, I was ever so glad that I had spent the extra ten bucks. Because I was given this incredible gift...

His foot, up on the toes, just tickles me. Plus, the actual squish hug was amazing! Last but not least, was the photo that I had planned everything around. My version of Sam meeting Jared and getting a hug. It was the third time that he had seen me, and I might have stood out a little. I walked up, grinning like a loon, and asked for a hug, please. He said, "I love your outfit, darlin'", and then pulled me in.

For me, this was an amazing highlight. For Jared to have actually seen me. For him to have noticed all that I had done and all the effort I had put forth, it gave me such joy. And while I may never go to another con, the memories from this one will keep me smiling for years to come.
