on the one hand, i am glad “bingo baggins” didn't make the final cut and frodo's name turned out to be frodo.
on the other hand, i'm very upset gandalf calling him “Bronwe athan Harthad” (“endurance beyond hope”) did NOT make the final cut bc it is truly such an apt description of frodo.

More Dwobbit Frodo! This time it’s baby Frodo with his adad! I was given on discord the idea dwarves wearing baby wraps to carry their babies with them and I loved it so much I just knew I had to draw Thorin carrying Frodo in one. In the first one Frodos maybe 1 years old? His crazy amount of hair is explained by his dwarven genes lmfaoo. In the second one he’s maybe a few months old. Anyway- I love the trope of a tough guy with a small babe, that’s literally them.

I love how entirely guilty Boromir feels after trying to get the ring from Frodo. The way he calls out to him after realizing what he’s done, the way he falls to the ground and cries. He was more than this moment, and he bravely defended his little friends, making them seem important to the cause and keeping them alive. I love him. He’s imperfect, but noble. He was more than that moment. He was all the moments before, and the moments after.

elrond through the ages based on one glorious panel from chapter 95 of Black Butler (hopefully i got that right....). in the context of this sequence, i always thought it was sad to think abt how many people elrond has lost throughout his life alongside how remarkable he is to remain "as kind as summer" still by the time the hobbit rolls around 🥺
i redrew elrond's poses based on ciel's in the original panels BUT i forgot what page exactly the original panel sequence is... however!! if you scroll down to the middle half of this blog post you can find the original reference pic :D warning that it includes heavy spoilers for the black butler manga so u could just alternatively google 'ciel phantomhive running' and it'd probably be one of the first results that pop up haha

I would have gone with you to the end, into the very fires of Mordor.

Somebody give me the rights to the LOTR cinematic productions so I can create a coming of age dramedy taking place during the seventeen years between Bilbo's 111th birthday party and Frodo leaving the Shire. I'd call it "The Shire Seventeen". It would not only include the Conspiracy as a backdrop but also a bunch of the development and growing up that was probably done within those seventeen years, that is entirely unrelated to the Ring.
It's a whole seventeen years worth of low-stakes hobbit Shire drama and shenanigans, guys-- I need that cozy comedy content.

The Conspiracy is so beautiful. Like.
Frodo is acting restless and his friends are afraid he's going to run off with no warning like Bilbo had done. Do they talk to him about their concerns? NO! CONSPIRACY TIME!!
Merry going up to Sam, the gardener who none of them have really spoken to much before, to be like "Hey do you want to help me spy on your boss? It's because of friendship."
THIS WORKS.
Sam gets super caught and has the fear of Gandalf put in him but he just bats his beautiful eyes and goes "Oh, I listened because I couldn't help myself!" and plays up the simple salt-of-the-earth thing to keep from giving away that no he was absolutely spying on purpose.
this ALSO works
But he won't tell the other Conspirators what he found out, which must drive Pippin *insane*.
Frodo spends the next six months thinking he's being very secretive but also wistfully sighing "Shall I ever look down into that valley again, I wonder?" every time he goes for a walk
Honestly it is AMAZING that Pippin didn't crack
At some point Merry and Pippin get together to filk the Misty Mountain song because having topical music is of course a vital part of any escape plan.

thinking about how frodo probably had an idea of his fate (or at least that he might be forever changed by this experience, if he didn’t already think about how he might not be coming back) from the moment he said “what must i do” back in the shire after gandalf explains about the ring.
when he and sam see the elves in the forest, making their way to the docks to sail west, “never to return,” sam says “i don’t know why…it makes me sad.” And frodo doesn’t say anything. he’s the one telling sam that the elves will never return, and he just watches them silently.
and then in rivendell, sam is packing to go home, and frodo teases him saying that he thought sam wanted to see the elves more than anything else. which sam insists he does, he did. But now he’s ready to go. and frodo agrees: “i am ready to go home.” but his tone isn’t very convincing. and this is after teasing sam about wanting to cut their adventure short, about wanting to go home already. already i think frodo knows that even if/when they go home, he won’t be the same (physically, already, he’s changed because of the stab wound from the morgul blade).
and then the penultimate moment, seeing everyone fighting at the council over who will take the ring to mordor, and he knows. he knows he must be the one to take this burden on, even though, looking around at the other members of the council, he must surely be thinking he’s not the best person for the job. he’s not a warrior. he’s not a wizard. he’s not the most cunning or experienced person there. nevermind him being a small hobbit in a very large world against even larger foes.
he doesn’t even know how to start this journey. but he asked at the beginning of it all, what must i do. he accepted the responsibility with barely a second thought for himself. what must i do shifts to a i will do what i must. (“i know what I must do. it’s just that…i’m afraid to do it.”) i will do what i was tasked to do, what I volunteered to do, though i know i will not be the same by the end of it.
and so he says, “i will take the ring to mordor. though…i do not know the way.”

George Martin, 2013: "In a very basic level winter is coming for all of us. I think that’s one of the things that art is concerned with: the awareness of our own mortality. “Valar morghulis” – “All men must die”. That shadow lies over our world and will until medical science gives us all immortality… but I don’t think it makes it necessarily a pessimistic world. Not any more pessimistic than the real world we live in. We’re here for a short time and we should be conscious of our own mortality, but the important thing is that love, compassion and empathy with other human beings is still possible. Laughter is still possible! Even laughter in the face of death… The struggle to make the world a better place… We have things like war, murder and rape… horrible things that still exist, but we don’t have to accept them, we can fight the good fight. The fight to eliminate those things. There is darkness in the world, but I don’t think we necessarily need to give way to despair. One of the great things that Tolkien says in Lord of The Rings is “despair is the ultimate crime”. That’s the ultimate failing of Denethor, the Steward of Gondor, that he despairs of ever being able to defeat Sauron. We should not despair. We should not go gentle into that good night".
JRR Tolkien, 1962 : "One reviewer once said, this is a jolly jolly book, all the right boys come home [...]- this isn't true of course, he can't have read the story. [...] Human stories are practically always about one thing, really, aren't they? Death. The inevitability of death. . . . . . (He quotes Simone de Beauvoir) 'There is no such thing as a natural death. Nothing that ever happens to man is natural, since his presence calls the whole world into question. All men must die, but for every man his death is an accident, and even if he knows it he would sense to it an unjustifiable violation.' Well, you may agree with the words or not, but those are the key spring of The Lord Of The Rings".
"Lotr is all rainbows and unicorns and Asoiaf is nihilistic and grimdark". Wrong, and wrong. In all its hope and radiance, lotr often gets very dark, and despite all the death and suffering, the hopeful moments in asoiaf shine bright. The meeting point of these two is this: having hope while in despair, and even better, refusing to give up because you have to go on despite not having any hope left.
