Something that I've noticed ever since the Smiling Critters were introduced is that they can so easily be paired off into complementary duos, ones that are specifically designed to teach children fundamental lessons about life and self-care from two different angles. It's really interesting to me.

Like obviously you have Dogday and Catnap, with their sun/moon, dog/cat dichotomy, that stress how important it is to have fun and get things done during the day, but also that it's important to wind down, relax, and get a good night's sleep.

Bubba Bubbaphant and Craftycorn were introduced as a duo in the Smiling Critter show's intro, and their dichotomy is quite obvious. They are basically the right and left sides of the brain personified. Bubba is the left side of the brain, logical, analytical, focused on math and science. Craftycorn is the right side of the brain, creative and imaginative, focused on the arts and self-expression. They represent learning and academia in all its forms, the different ways people engage with and understand the world.

Hoppy Hopscotch and Kickin' Chicken form the sportsmanship duo. They are both portrayed as enjoying sports and the outdoors, but in different ways that highlight the different ways sports can be played and enjoyed and also what it entails to be successful at them. Hoppy Hopscotch may be loud and impatient, but she is also a team player, shown in her willingness to slow down her fast pace to make sure none of her friends are left behind. Kickin' Chicken, on the other hand, is laid-back, relaxed, and chill, the described "cool kid" of the group, but he's also described as having a ton of perseverance, more of a "slow and steady wins the race" type of person.

This leaves Bobby Bearhug and Picky Piggy as the last pair. Fittingly, these two are all about how to meet the fundamental needs of yourself and others. Bobby teaches children how to nourish themselves emotionally through showing and receiving care from others, while Picky teaches them how good food is important to nourish the body and soul. Depriving oneself of either of these things only makes oneself and therefore everyone around one miserable, because those fundamental needs are no longer being met.

Like fr, this is some pretty genius marketing right here. You have enough characters that every kid will have their favorite, but not so many that any would get lost in the shuffle, because the lessons each one of them would teach would be integral to the group as a whole. It really makes me that much sadder we saw basically nothing of the Smiling Critters during the game itself, because Mob Games struck gold with this concept, only to ultimately do nothing with it. :/

The differences between each Mega is something I love and appreciate, plus it's also fun to compare them side-by-side for it.

I think it's really amusing how they start with robots that slowly reach near-human traits, and then there's a straight-up human. Albeit, he is merged with a non-human being.

And then there's Volnutt. I know he could probably be narrowed down to an "artificial human", but I like the idea of tying him to his celestial origins as Trigger that are still half a mystery.

Such is my running-joke with him. He is just... Volnutt (currently).

I'll rant about Zhanyi for a minute

Honestly such a shame that OX refuses to do anything with Zhanyi.

I'm not even talking about them not being the main couple anymore, but the lack of progress on their relationship overall.

In the beginning, they had a really cool concept of Jian Yi being this lovable childhood friend who hides behind smiles and jokes, that suddenly disappeared and came back years later with no explanation. Then we go to the past, and there's some angst about the intensity of Jian Yis's feelings, the mysteries of his family, his kidnapping, etc. And their dynamic was really good, with Jian yi being a very carefree but also intense person, and Zhan Zheng having a short fuse in a kind of childish way (as he is a teenager at the time), being extremely loyal and intensely confused about his feelings towards this friend of his, who he spent most of his life with.

Jian Yi kept pushing and Zhan Zheng was this un-movable force where he just decided fuck it, whatever the kind of love I still love you no matter what and I'll fight for you. From the dangerous adults around them to the people who had crushes on Jian Yi, Zhan Zheng refused to let him go. They had depth and a lot of development at the start.

It could be such a great dynamic, and could lead to so much angst with Jian Yi's disappearance.

And they even had some great comedic moments of teenagers figuring out their sexuality, so a lot of them being caught doing or saying weird stuff to one another and getting flustered about it.

But it's like OX just GAVE UP ON DEVELOPING THEM

LIKE GOD DAMN

Their dynamic pre and post disappearance is exactly the same, it didn't get any deeper or more explicitly romantic, it feels like they are the same people, no changes at all. They're not upset, Zhan Zheng didn't acknowledge he has sexual/romantic feelings towards Jian Yi (which was great back then, but how is it still the same), Jian Yi has the exact same personality - no shiftyness about his experiences being gone, no serious moments, no growth. Yes they do have this "I'll stay and take care of you forever" but they've had this same dynamic FOR YEARS (in universe), how has it not developed? How has it not sowered or changed after Jian Yi disappeared??

They still feel like the same teenagers that are very close but aren't together. Every time we could get a serious moment, or progress on their sexual/romantic feelings we just get another vague "no mater what, we are besties" or goddamm comedic relief.

(Teenagers on the left, adults on the right) Like, we got this same situation so many times already, where Jian Yi does something dumb, Zhan Zheng reacts and they get caught doing something that is misunderstood. (The bug bite photo Jy sends Zzx, Zzx drying Jys pants, Jy tearing Zzx pants on the subway, jy touching Zzx chest in public, Jy wearing the skirt, this update with Zzx spanking Jy, I can list this forever) it's always the same concept/situation, and their reactions are always the same, there's just never any progress.

And don't get me wrong, I very much understand and came to terms that 19 days is not a plot focused story, and let's be honest the time-line has been a bit of a nightmare lately, but I feel at the very least we have some very good and fun progress and character depth with Tianshan. Zhanyi did progress from the very beginning, but overall it feels like that just stopped.

Like, we still didn't get to see Mo realizing he tian is gone or anything from that period, but their dynamic changed SO MUCH from when they first showed up. From when they first meet to when Ht leaves (after beating up SL) their relationship deepens, their characters gain layers. And since 19 days takes time with its plot we are still at the very beginning of their post leaving dynamic and we've already got some pretty obvious change on how the intensity of their relationship changed (Ht basically proposing sex during their last update).

But it just feels like Ox doesn't want to do anything with Zhanyi, not even just forget about them, but freeze them in the same state. Maybe OX is just leaving them frozen until they finish Tianshan's story and then go back to focus on Zhanyi, but like, it just feels like such a let down to continuously see Zhanyi stay the same.

We got to here, we got JY admitting his feelings and ZZX accepting them but being vague whether he felt the same or not, and then we got them several times dedicating their futures to each other, and that's it. Nothing else changed or advanced from their teenage years.

I think it's why Tianshan became so much more popular, because they never got stuck in time. Zhanyi had around the same level of potential (don't come for me, I love Tianshan and HT is my favorite character from 19D so I can't say it's exactly the same lol) and could have such a great intense dynamic, but it keeps not happening.

Maybe I'll have to re-read their chapters, and the progress is just super nuanced, but hopefully, OX will do something with them now that they are really testing the limits of Chinese censorship, lol

TLDR: Zhanyi relationship and characters had so much potential but now feels frozen in time, their relationship lacks depth because OX keeps making them repeat the same situations and have the same reactions. Hopefully this will change.

TIMELINE OF XI’S KEY EVENTS

(These are some events that drastically affected XI’s life but by no means are his adventures with others less important to him or are they everything he's done because we'd be here forever)

Being the Doctor has never looked so complicated.

Pre-Time War: Identical to usual considered for the Doctor of Doctor Who canon.

Central/End of the Time War: Gallifrey was presumed destroyed with a weapon known as the Moment. The Doctor discovered this weapon aboard his TARDIS in later years and realised his planet had not been destroyed at that point in time. He still became the War Doctor as per canon universe.

(Following in approximate Earth years and/or the Doctor’s age depending on event)

2005 – Facing off against the Daleks aboard the Game Station, the Doctor absorbed the energies from the heart of his TARDIS and became the Bad Wolf. He destroyed the Dalek race reaching back to the end of the Time War itself. Unable to control the power, he killed his companion, Rose Tyler, and failed to resurrect neither her nor Jack Harkness who had already fallen. In rage and grief, he sealed himself inside the TARDIS and poured the energy back before regenerating. His biodata severely damaged by his mistake, the Doctor regenerated wild, aggrieved and somewhat insane.

2006 – While tearing around the universe in a frenzied blur, the Doctor drew the attention of Dr Martha Jones. He took her on as his companion of sorts though he behaved in a debauched and irresponsible manner. Instead of giving up on him, she fell into corruption and put up with his sexual and flippant attitudes. The Doctor’s weakness at this time allowed him to be the perfect instrument for Rassilon’s escape from the Time War. Instead of choosing the Master to be his vessel, Rassilon retrospectively planted the signal of drums within the Doctor’s head, waiting to surface at the opportune moment. It drove the Doctor wilder still and the universe began to dread his name.

2008 – The signal grew worse in the Doctor’s mind. Martha abandoned him but he no longer cared. Instead, he went in search of the only companion he had truly loved – Sarah Jane. The Doctor abducted her at an age not long after he had left her so many years before and tried to convince her to stay with him. Realising him to be mad and dangerous, she refused and demanded to be returned home. Eventually he relented but the loss of her pushed his apathy further. He discovered his old nemesis, the Master, had been living as a human in Leadworth having crash-landed in the garden belonging to Amelia Pond. The Master’s latest incarnation had reverted to being known as Koschei and had settled down with Amy as his wife, together having a half-Time Lord child, Melody Pond (River Song). The Doctor and Koschei fought. Koschei lost. The Doctor buried his nemesis alive and kidnapped his daughter.

2010 (aged 907) – When the signal reached its height and the Final Sanction came, the Doctor helped Rassilon up until the realisation that everything was to turn to dust. He balked and attempted to flee the damage, managing to fall through a rift in space and time though not before the Sanction damaged several layers of his TARDIS, including the control room with him inside. Barely alive, he smashed through into a new reality and regenerated. His prisoner, River Song, was safely contained deeper inside the ship.

(907-1098) – The Doctor spent much of this period of time sealed away aboard the TARDIS, barely able to function after the assumed collapse of his own universe. Without the drums he was lost and broken, his only social contact with River whom he eventually unfroze from stasis but kept restrained. He tested experimental gadgets on her, though not with intent to harm, and managed to refrain from sexual assault though his actions were still amoral. Eventually he began to explore his new universe and became a nuisance to its resident Doctor. He began to find pleasure in life again in all of its forms.

(1098) – Met another Doctor with his previous face whilst testing out a prototype mech on a habited planet. Coincidentally, this Doctor had also fallen into this reality after escaping his own. The two continued to run into one another over the years, causing mischief, getting into fights. They chose to give themselves the signatures ‘X’ and ‘XI’. Fighting evolved into flirting and their time spent together increased. Toward the latter end of this time, XI probably aged 1107, they were sexually intimate. The first incident ended badly, with XI offending X and winding up with a deep scar running from hip to just beneath his left heart. River was also eventually discovered by X and accidentally released.

2011-2012 (aged 1108/1109) – Teething troubles overcome, the two Doctors grew amiable toward one another and chose to partner up, sharing their TARDISes.  Around this time X’s abusive ex-lover, an alternate Jack Harkness, arrived on the scene and attacked XI. They spent time running from Harkness and battling the hiccups in their relationship. XI’s growing affection was admitted as love and eventually X expressed a similar sentiment.

2013 – In partially an attempt to escape Harkness, X and XI hid upon a planet amusingly named ‘Hellifyno’, a place teeming with a variety of impossible species. Their TARDIS grounded and unable to leave the orbit of the planet, they remained there for a year. The two nurtured relationships and XI’s compassionate ’Doctorish’ nature began to return in small amounts. Unfortunately, Harkness found them and he blackmailed X into an on-off relationship to preserve XI’s safety.

April 2013 – In a bitter argument, Harkness stabbed X. The wound was mortal and X found his way back to XI, too shocked and vain to regenerate. The nature of the world on which his lover died gave XI the unique opportunity to retrieve X’s essence from a hell dimension. He rescued X, but he was different. A demonic mark appeared beneath X’s left eye and strange incidents plagued them for years to come.

May 2013 – XI was hijacked by a Cyber Planner. X managed to defeat the entity by smacking XI in the face with a gold ring, with which he had intended to propose. The two got engaged. Soon afterward, they found a way to bind their TARDISes together into a hybrid not only able to get them off the planet but allowing them to travel the Void without damaging universes. They became free to meet people across the multi-verse.

23rd November 2013 – X and XI were married.

December 2013 – XI met a man who would become one of his arch nemeses: Kyrian.

April-May 2014 – X became possessed by his first demon. Fortunately the creature burnt itself out and X was restored.

Early June 2014 – Met an alternate version of River Song, but one so very close to his own. She had been abducted by a crueller Doctor who referred to himself as ‘the Predator’ or ‘Notchy’. XI resolved to help her to atone for what he had done to his own River.

Mid-June 2014 – A vengeful spirit deity whom XI had angered back on Hellifyno made her move. Teaming up with Kyrian, the kitsune known as K’treya captured XI and stole a century of his memories. She gave him to Kyrian who pretended to be his lover and kept him for several months. X eventually saved him but not before Kyrian had managed to sabotage XI’s contraception and caused him to impregnate a female slave.

1st July 2014 – XI’s daughter, Gwenllian (Gwen) was born, after he accidentally got their occasional companion, Amelia, pregnant the previous October.

September 2014 – Kyrian revealed that XI was a father again and attempted to blackmail him into staying with him for the sake of baby Killian. When XI refused, Kyrian returned at intervals with the child having aged and weaned with golden time energy. When Killian was 10 years old, Kyrian allowed XI to take him home. Over the next month, XI decided to find Killian a good home that could care for a child with his abilities and needs.

October/November 2014 – An entity referring to itself as Hyde took over another Doctor with whom the pair had made friends. Hyde abducted several of their companions and tortured them. XI locked up his still pregnant (time travel is wibbly) friend, Amy, to keep her safe and arranged a plan with X to save the others. X gave himself up in exchange for the kidnapped women while XI prepared for confrontation. Clad in an Iron Man-like suit designed to draw Hyde from its host, XI succeeded in destroying Hyde. Amid the chaos, X was stabbed by Hyde and XI rushed him back to the TARDIS. X regenerated, keeping the same face, for both of them had undergone a procedure allowing them to do so. With residual regeneration energy, X healed the scar he had inflicted upon XI years ago. The two made love and, oddly, this jolted X’s voice into permanently sounding Scottish.

25th December 2014 – An alien device disguised as a Christmas tree bauble flew into X and XI’s room and took samples of their DNA. They chased it to the architectural reconfiguration system only to find the bauble merging with the system. Between the TARDIS and the strange device, a baby was born out of the emerged sac, perfectly created from their DNA. X and XI named their son Felix.

January 2015 – Cursed by K’treya, XI temporarily became a woman. One night he forgot his Vortex Manipulator while visiting a friend and bumped into Kyrian. Believing himself to be protecting his friend from harm, XI lured Kyrian to a hotel and slept with him. It was the last time he ever intended to do so but the fallout with X over the matter took time to get past. Following this, Kyrian’s obsession with XI took a new turn. Making a deal with K’treya, he fused an imprint of XI’s personality into the captured Doctor, Notchy, and made the creature who would call itself Caliban.

February 2015 (aged 1112-1128) – In order to protect Felix, X and XI agreed to timelock themselves away while he grew up. They allowed Amy and Gwen to visit occasionally but to the outside world it seemed very little time passed. They were timelocked for 16 years, with interspersed trips outside to stave off boredom as well as to prevent Felix from being quite as sheltered.

April 2015 – Once again X was possessed by a demon, and this one stayed for a long time. Despairing at the loss of his love, XI did everything he could both to remove the demon and at the same time prevent it from leaving. The creature chose to name itself Cake and developed a strange attachment to XI and the convenience of his life.

May 2015 – With the help of K’treya, the Cyber Planner made another return, taking advantage of XI’s weakened state. This time the Planner did very little but gloat and upset XI’s family and friends, awaiting further orders from K’treya. Felix destroyed the Planner though the entity chose to leave information in XI’s mind that would help him defeat the kitsune. XI discovered that K’treya had abducted Killian and intended to make him a powerful acolyte for her cause.

June 2015 – Armed with the knowledge from the Cyber Planner of K’treya’s location and using armour harnessing the power of accumulated psychic belief in XI’s abilities, XI and Cake faced the kitsune goddess and rescued Killian.

Early July 2015 – Harkness returned and kidnapped Felix, the specific damage caused unclear as to whether it was experienced or simply planted. As with facing K’treya, Cake also assisted XI in retrieving his son though it barely felt a victory at the time. XI shot Harkness in the head, but since his enemy is immortal, the punishment was short-lived.

Late July 2015 – Having gained a level of affection for XI sufficient to become painful as well as discovering that its hold upon X was going to slip, the demon Cake gave up its possession and slipped back into darkness, allowing X to claw his way back to control.

Early August 2015 – On an idiotic whim, XI used the psychic circuits of their TARDIS in an attempt to pay a cheeky visit to a younger version of X. He accidentally wound up on Gallifrey when X (known as Theta then) was barely more than a teenager. Worse still, the ne’er-do-well young Theta proceeded to lure XI home and drug his drink. Though he did not know it, XI took X’s virginity. Panicked, XI encouraged Theta to fall asleep with a psychic nudge and then fled back to his proper time.

August 2015-October 2015 – The Time Lords returned. With the means to locate XI across the multi-verse, the High Council hijacked the TARDIS and dragged XI back to Gallifrey, the planet having survived the Final Sanction, along with his universe. Rassilon was locked in the Dark Tower and Earth had been destroyed with Gallifrey in its place. The Doctor (XI) was put on trial for his crimes and friends, family and enemies alike were brought to the stand. During this time, XI made a deal with Kyrian that he would allow him to take Killian away for a while in exchange for retracting his damaging statements against him and if he would fix his son without harming him. An older version of Theta also visited XI in custody, furious that he had been abandoned. Using an attack from a lone Dalek to his advantage, XI convinced the Council to change his sentence from a thousand years of time-locked imprisonment to a thousand years ruling Gallifrey as Lord President with the intent to fix what he had broken. His friends convinced the High Council that he was sound of mind and remorseful. XI learned that it had been with the help of Sarah Jane Smith and the remnants of Torchwood that the universe had survived.

31st October 2015 (aged 1128) – On the verge of XI being crowned 425th Lord President of Gallifrey, the Master (Missy) made a surprise appearance and shot him in revenge. She also claimed to be saving the Doctor from an excruciating forced regeneration, something the Council intended to do to XI in order for him to receive a full set of lives, by taking away the one he had remaining. XI channelled his excess energy into the Sash of Rassilon and regenerated in X’s arms. He was then appointed Lord President of Gallifrey.

November 2015-January 2016 – In between the many tasks of his position, XI took it upon himself to modify the TARDIS into a special gateway that would pinch the fabric of all reality together and allow all universes to connect at one point. This was doable only with the knowledge granted to him by the updated Matrix Circlet. Part of his agreement with the Time Lords was that the TARDIS would only be able to make one trip at a time before bouncing back to Gallifrey and logging a destination, for the safety of himself and the planet. Amid receiving visitors and venturing out, XI travelled back to see X’s younger self again in order to make amends for the pain he had caused. This of course, made his relationship all the more complicated. In the meantime, X had stern words with both Missy and Sarah Jane in their attempts to communicate with the Doctor. He became XI’s personal advisor and consort following being his defense during the trial.

January 2016 - March 2016 – After a long absence, Kyrian resurfaced, more powerful than ever. He revealed that he had consumed the life force of XI’s son, Killian, along with a child of his own. In fury and grief, XI enacted an ambush he had long since planned in the event of his enemy’s return. He imprisoned Kyrian in the most secure cell ever built. XI sought the means to destroy Kyrian once and for all, appalled with his view of the universe. Aside from a few mishaps involving genetic manipulation tricks via Missy and the curious new Clara who had been popping up on Gallifrey, XI’s attention became focused on the balance of affection given to both Theta and X.

March 2016 – During his search for a weapon powerful enough to solve his problems - the Gauntlet of Rassilon - XI ventured into the Dark Tower and accidentally fell into a trap set by a manifestation of ancient Time Lord consciousnesses known as the Dark Matrix. It infected his mind and pushed him into megalomania. XI planned his great ‘Practice’, an effort to rid the multi-verse of ‘evil’, allowing him to fix things as the ‘ultimate Doctor’. Failing to find Rassilon’s Gauntlet, he fashioned himself a gauntlet of his own that he could use in conjunction with the staff he used to defeat K'treya.

June 2016  - August 2016 – Discovering that Kyrian had vanished, Caliban responded to XI’s challenge. He faced off against the Lord President on the wastes outside the Citadel but was not powerful enough to win. Unbeknownst to XI, his husband and Missy had formed an alliance to stop him. X distracted XI with the announcement that he was leaving him, giving Missy the opportunity she needed to rip the Dark Matrix from XI’s mind, using the very Gauntlet of Rassilon he had been seeking. That done, Missy released a swarm of kitsune spirits upon Caliban, trapping his essence in the box that had assisted in his creation, and restored the Time Lord known as the Predator (Notchy) to his body. XI fell into a coma. With the power of the Gauntlet and the Dark Matrix combined, Missy took the opportunity to free Kyrian from his prison on the condition not to harm the Doctor. Though Kyrian temporarily kept his word, he kidnapped River Song and discovered she was pregnant with Caliban’s child. Furthermore, he lured Notchy out of prison. All the while, friends and enemies alike contacted XI in his dream state in an attempt to wake him.

August 2016 - After months of healing and resolving his fears, XI woke with the help of a joint visit from Theta and X. As yet unaware that two of his best friends were pregnant and one of them kidnapped by his enemy, XI began to catch up on what his husband had held together while he slept.

November 2016 - After discovering that River had been taken by Kyrian, X and XI exchanged the box containing Caliban’s essence for her return.

December 2016 - Missy emerged from her hiding place in the Rani’s empire to plunge Gallifrey into a persistent winter. Determined to make the most of this ‘gift’, XI allowed a month-long festival to take place in and around the Citadel and kept the snow in check. He threw a winter ball in honour of his daughter, only to find that he was to gain another daughter as the mysterious Gallifreyan, Laila, revealed herself to be his and X’s child from the future. To add to the surprises, the Doctors received an announcement from Amy and Koschei that they were to have a baby.

During the winter fair, Notchy made a return. Barely clothed and no longer immortal, he sent a secret message to River to meet him. With him being the last remnant of her home universe and the closest thing to the father of her child she agreed to meet him. River made the mistake of offering him her vortex manipulator forcing an arrest by the Chancellery. They were brought before XI who scolded them but he eventually agreed that Notchy could remain in River’s custody on pain of castration or death were he to harm her or anyone else on Gallifrey.

Strange happenings including talks of ghosts in the outer city limits began on Gallifrey. Rumours started circulating about something called the Grandfather.

March 2017 - August 2017 The Arcadian Tear. From the ruins of Arcadia sprang a rift in time and space, a double helix of gold light that marked the passing of something powerful, at the very least the death of Caliban. It opened up a path to another universe, one ravaged by a Time War. This event, combined with the active Gateway, caused XI’s universe to become susceptible to small bursts of rift activity, paving the way for trouble to come.

In response, XI called for a full lock-down on Gallifrey. The Gateway was sealed but for authorised travel and all off-worlders encouraged to return home. This included Theta, who was forcibly removed by his older incarnation, X. A heartbroken XI made to get the situation under control in order to make Gallifrey safe once more.

At present the High Council of Gallifrey are at a loss for being able to close the Tear and the only person capable of doing so has vanished, if she would even bother to help. Reports of blocked communications and attacks from strange creatures have been pouring in. Close friends are being affected by anomalous and dangerous influences. Two of his best friends are on the verge of giving birth.

August 2017 - A brief and happy time ensued where the Doctors enjoyed peace and spent time with family and friends where they could. The happiness was not to last, however. Whilst X went on a quest to hunt down Missy in order to seal the Tear, XI was captured by the Cyber Planner, this time in the body of Theta. Tragedy was not done with Gallifrey either. A hair-line fracture of the Tear opened up in the workshop of Amy Pond’s home, swallowing the existence and memory of the joyful life she had found. Whilst it is a small, painful blessing that Amy and Gwen do not remember, with Time Lords it’s not so certain. 

In more bizarre news, it seems the Doctors’ combined TARDIS, tired of staying put as a Gateway instead of the travelling she desired, has manifested into a body (see Chaya).

January 2020 - The Cyber PA was defeated and Theta rescued. Leading up to this time, the Tear continued to ravage realities. X and XI made a pact to fix it, along with adding a few extra resolutions to the mix. They performed Big Bang 2, the 2020 patch update. With XI’s Earth restored and Gallifrey moved, he relinquished the mantle of Lord President and resumed travelling with his husband. He visits his friends and family whenever he can, but spends a lot of time now in clusters of universes strangely filled with superheroes and villains. Whatever they get up to, the Doctors’ adventures continue!
