BACKSTORY. Losing their family to a demon in their childhood, Shiori spent some time in the entertainment district, having been left there by their uncle – much to the dismay of their cousin, Rai – as he claimed he had too many mouths to feed already. Taken in by a house, they kept away from the customers generally, unless they were bringing one up to see someone else, though they were taught some of the traditional skills that the girls were taught as well. However, they were not in the house for too long before the owner of a Wisteria House of the Demon Slayer corp bought out their debt.

They were far happier living within the Wisteria House and helping demon slayers, even more so once they were taken in by Rengoku Ruka, wife of the Flame Pillar, Rengoku Shinjurou. They worked for the Rengoku family as a medical aid to Ruka, but in truth they were treated so close to family that one who was unfamiliar with the family would hardly think otherwise. It was only after Ruka’s death that Shiori went on to see training in the art of slaying demons from the former Wind Hashira, Takemoto Noriko.

Joining the demon slayer ranks, they stayed until an unfortunate turn in a mission against a lower moon resulted in a severe internal injury that led to their retirement as a slayer. However, they did not leave the corps in any official manner as they instead went back to their former Wisteria House to take time in determining what it was they wished to do. Dedicating themself to the growth and cultivation of the wisteria blossoms surrounding the shrine, as well as forming charms and perfumes made of the wisteria for those with marechi blood to ward demons, they continued to practice their breathing forms, but now with metal fans and hairpins sharp as knives with wisteria poison compartments inside.

They work often with the Butterfly mansion in sharing information about wisteria poisons and extracts, and as such were gifted with a pair of fans with razor sharp retractable 'teeth' made of nichirin steel that the Demon Slayers use, though crafted with their use of poison over sheer strength in mind. The breathing style they use now is Petal Breathing, a form that focuses on dexterity and poison, similar to Insect Breathing, but as they use fans and hairpins as their weapons, that is where the main difference lies

I also think a lot of the Shiori Hate™ comes from her portrayal in Adolescence. Now, while I understand the conclusions that peoole come to based on this, I don't think it's entirely fair to Shiori's character as it doesn't really take into consideration the context of Adolescence and the role that Shiori plays in the narrative.

Adolescence of Utena (regardless of whether you interpret it as a direct sequel, a standalone reimagining, or something in-between) clearly serves as a synopsis of the events of the series, just with details cut-out, changed, or condensed to support the movie's length. For example, the Student Council arc is instead condensed into a single duel with Saionji, as is the Apocalypse arc with Juri.

I would argue that Movie!Shiori, rather than being 100% representative of the real Shiori, is instead meant to serve as a stand-in for the Black Rose Duelists as a collective. The Black Rose Arc in RGU is vital in showing how victims of the system are turned against one another in order to keep them distracted from their real oppressors (this idea is also embodied in the series by Nanami, who is missing from the movie). It also demonstrates several examples of how Ohtori Academy's patriarchal system has fostered unhealthy and toxic relationships between various characters. I believe that Shiori is meant to serve as the embodiment of these themes in Adolescence of Utena, in lieu of the Black Rose Arc.

In Adolescence, Shiori has a very unhealthy and toxic relationship with Juri. She wants to force Juri to be her prince forever, so that she, by extension, can gain power within the system. This is in much the same way that the Black Rose Duelists make their respective student council members into rose brides by forcefully pulling swords from their chests, all in order to gain power and agency within the system. Shiori also plays a major antagonistic role in the movie as she is the one who exposes Anthy as the one who "killed" Akio, and she later attempts to stop Anthy from escaping to the real world (its a big mistake to think you're the only one who can turn into a car). I would argue that this represents how the Black Rose Duelists are convinced by Mikage to kill the Rose Bride, believing that it will solve their problems- which in itself represents how victims of the system are turned against other victims in order to keep them from rising up against the real oppressors. I think that this shows how Shiori's motivations within the movie more closely align with the general motivations of the Black Rose Duelists as a whole, rather than her original motivations within the series (which are worthy of an analysis all on their own).

Tl;dr Movie!Shiori shouldn't be taken as a true 1:1 representation of Shiori's character, because she actually represents the entire Black Rose Arc and all its themes as a whole, just in condensed movie format.

That's why I wanted to change the relationship we had. But what I did with him made me feel even more pathetic than before! I thought I wanted him for me! But now... Now, she and I are equal! No, I've beaten her! I'm the one who's always been there in her heart! I've beaten her in the end! Oh, what to do! Knowing my friend's secret makes me so happy I can't stand it! Petal Breathing

Rising as a combination between Flower Breathing & Wind Breathing influences, this form focuses on dance-like, flexible movements, and dual wielding bladed fans & small blades (such as the wakazashi, or thin hair-pin daggers). Often connected by a chain to increase the reach of the weapons - the fans are used to help influence the flow of air currents, for both defensive and offensive purposes, while the small blades are used less to decapitate demons, and more to deal quick and numerous slashes and puncture / thrust wounds, injecting the opponent with wisteria based poisons. This form was created by Yuuki Shiori, who learned both Flower & Wind Breathing techniques, before creating their own form to allow them to stay on relatively equal footing with their peers, even with their more delicate physical body. This form was one they would even be able to continue using after suffering from internal injuries and their semi retirement as a slayer, leading to their ability to contribute in the fight against Upper Moon Rank 3 - Akaza, and against Muzan in the final battle.

First Form: Sakura (Cherry) Piercing Sky; rapid thrusts of small blades, usually accompanied by rapid throwing of daggers or hairpins, cause numerous wounds for poisons to enter, killing the opponent within a few minutes from the dosages.

Second Form: Ajisai (Hydrangea) - Sudden Bloom; the paths of these consecutive blows with both weapons converge at sharp angles, all in the space of a single breath. If opponents do not move quickly enough, the act of extending the fans can also be used to cause swirling, circular attacks, catching enemies within the bounds of the chains and effectively catching, or at least tripping them.

Third Form: Lotus Petal Whirlwind; impressive bursts of speed define this form, allowing the user the ability to move across the battlefield in the blink of an eye, all while obscuring their opponents vision. It is especially used defensively by helping to get injured out of a direct attack, or by distracting the opponent enough that their attacks before far less effective (a trait shared by Mist Breathing).

Fourth Form: Gentle Wisteria Rising; low striking with the fan (especially slashes that travel in a diagonal upwards direction when close to the ground) causes blossoms to slice upwards in a cyclone.

Fifth Form: Higanbana (Spider Lily) Needlepoint Eye; users eyesight is maximized, ensuring they can see every detail of an individual being (a useful skill for determining an opponents weakness, or for aiding an ally, whether by covering their own weakness, or by using this sight to help heal internal injuries). Using this ability, especially for prolonged periods of time, can lead to blindness in one or both eyes.

Sixth Form: Honeysuckle Mirage; With the help of the Wisteria poison, this form is used to confused opponents by tricking their sense of sight, causing them to see the user as a mirage. This allows the user to move freely about the battlefield, whilst their opponent is confused (works exceptionally well against most demons, does not work against those who do not rely on sight, but when used in tandem with other slayers, this technique can even deceive members of the Twelve Kizuki).

Seventh Form: Shidekobushi (Magnolia) Blossoming Flood; simultaneously swinging both blade & fan, catching the opponent between them, and delivering as many slashes, thrusts, and poisoned projectiles as fast as possible is the goal of this form. The most offensive out of Petal Breathing, this form relies the most on quick, flexible movements, to allow the user to create a dynamic burst of attacks, without having to be rooted in one spot.

i think one of the most interesting ways to look at the differences between the series and the movie, is that the first is mostly from utena's and/or akio's perspective, while the latter is mostly from anthy's. and i like how this explains the drastic change in akio's character between the two. in the show he is more charismatic, more powerful, has a larger role in the story, because this is how he presents himself both to us as the audience and to utena. but anthy knows him and how pathetic he really is, and so when we see him in her narrative instead of his own, it becomes incredibly obvious. he can't drive his car, he doesn't have any real control over all the things he pretends to, he panics and kills himself the moment there's even the threat of consequences for what he does. it works doubly well if you read the movie as a sequel, because that's when anthy has truly lost all faith in him and the idea of the prince. he's dead the entire time because he's dead to her.
