S - Slings and Olive Branches by Gibraltar - The first tale of the Starship Reykjavik. If you love awesome characters with many layers and also some supremely badass moments, Sam's the author you wanna read. Every bit as skilled at character, world and plot building as any professional, Gibraltar's stories of the Reykjavik are funny, heartfelt and Nandi Trujillo will just win you over literally in this first, short story.

L - Land of Song by @b-radley66 - Generally, you know that when B writes anything, it's going to be plot-heavy, dense and guaranteed to require at least one spreadsheet. But the ability to keep all of that not only in-line but also moving forward is a skill not many authors can claim, and B is an expert at it. Plus, his OCs are so good that you'll be hunting various wikis going, "But wait, they're not canon??"

W - When the Lights Come On by @btwxsixesandsevens - A beautiful little original tale set in the Star Wars universe. I love the atmosphere of this one; the way that it correlates so much to memories of my own childhood. Some things are pan universal, I think. And the author is a master worldbuilder who did stunningly cool things with zabrak culture that I still think about regularly.

A - A Higher Power When You Look (Also on Ad Astra) by @daraoakwise - An absolutely, mind-blowingly epic retelling of a lot of the Original Series cast's tales for the AOS. Dara takes a lot of the sillier premises in the AOS line and makes it all make sense. Her character work and world building and plotting are out of this world.

L - Lost… and Found by @shadowmaat - SURGE SQUAD!! Shadowmaat's OC clones (and jedi!) are incredibly charming and this is where the tale begins. Guaranteed if you read it, you'll knock out the whole series and want more. (And I am still excited for the Blackbirds crossover that will one day happen!)

K - Kaminoan Copyright by independent_variables - Awesome world-building, which seems to be a thing for me. LOL! But it's a short, punchy tale about what the chips entailed for the clones and how things change when Anakin -- of all people, but it makes perfect sense! -- finds out about them and word spreads. Sweet ending, too.

E - Every Moment a Step Forward by alyyks - Bail/Bre/Maul is one of the ships/tags I pioneered, so it's an outright thrill everytime someone writes it. And alyyks is an awesome author in general, so not only do you have an awesome author writing my own faves, but the story's excellent. It touches on a Maul who is very much living with his damage, and how important the steady love and support of a family is to his quality of life. Just a psychologically excellent tale.

R - Rest and Ruckus (archive locked) by @sharpest_asp - A gift that made me beam, this one is Corry and Scotty going camping up in the woods of Maine, with all the inherent chaos that usually accompanies those two. Sweet, funny, in-character and atmospheric, it's a quick and lovely jaunt with a bunch of excellent mental images.

honestly I find some of the anti-ai art stuff ridiculous in the rhetoric they use, like people saying it's cheating at art, devalues art, or lacks soul. Photobashing, collage, relying too heavily on a reference and with some people using any reference at all, have all been called cheating at art. I never heard people call it cheating when people used computer programs to make photomosaics.

Art has already been devalued, ordinary artists had been able to make a decent living in the 70s, now it's really hard to make a living through art. There's loads of old dramas where people are like, failed artists, and yet they still have a place to live. It's just not a very nice place. Nowadays even pretty good artists can find it a struggle to not have to have a roommate or a rich partner or something. Also people have been saying that something means that art lacks a human touch for ages, humans have drawn clipart, or made vectors from photographs, and those have been considered lacking a soul or w/e Like the valid points people have tend to be that like companies are going to use generative art to replace artists, that's true, but expanding copyright will always protect the companies not the artists. Producing a right to remix would protect individuals better, it's not people like you who are the problem, it's people like Microsoft Activision Blizard. Secondly the consent in generative works isn't good either, nor is the processing power used, but I'm sure ya'll about ethical works are talking about that. Also personally I think if an individual doesn't make any marks on a piece of generative art, or doesn't produce any code, only keywords and choice I think it would be better to say they're a guider or generationist or something. It just feels more descriptive towards the image making, like how a painter isn't a sculptor, but someone who just does found object art is still basically an artist, but they're not someone who sketches.

I know some artists are scared and feel like they shouldn't bother doing art because the computer can do it, but like, people are still mathematicians even though computers are great at calculations. We might not have human calculators any more, but the field is still very important. On either side of things at very least we should be fighting capitalism and not each other. Like fuck adobe, fuck disney, they can make technically ethical systems from their own massive image libraries, but it's their artists who will suffer the most. We need to provide incomes and housing for everyone, and full union support, to ensure that techology benefits humanity, rather than it benefiting only the capitalists.

Also btw I say this as someone who has done professional art both digitally and physically, and I've not used any generated art for any of it, though I have done a paintover and I really like sketching "this horse doesn't exist" and using "this human doesn't exist" for oil painting practice

Is it Ranpo or Rampo? PSA since the spelling is different between subs:

The real life author Edogawa Ranpo/Rampo was a very cool person. There are lots of fun stories about him, but the thing to know is that he liked Edgar Allan Poe and could speak English. (He liked Poe's mystery stories specifically, Poe having created the proto-Sherlock in his stories about character C. Auguste Dupin).

Why RaNpo: The original author based his pen name on Edgar Allan Poe. Because of the Japanese phonetic system, the first O is considered "soft" and can be skipped over when talking fast, and the W sound is so soft it's often omitted from translation altogether. The Rs are a little more complicated but for the purposes of this explanation I'll just say that soft Rs at the ends of English words are often omitted in their Japanese counterparts (i.e. "computer" is pronounced "computa"), and Japanese doesn't have an L sound exactly, so the R in Ranpo is a stand-in. Thus:

Edgar Allan Poe -> Edga aran po -> Edgaa ranpo -> Edogawa Ranpo -> えどがわ•らんぽ ->　江戸川•乱歩

So this makes it seem like a no-brainer to spell it Ranpo. I'll give another point in Ranpo's favor: Japanese does not have a stand-alone character for M. Each Japanese character has at least two letter sounds in it and one is always a vowel (thus "do" instead of just "d" in Edogawa). Vowel-only sounds are an exception to this rule. They have characters that represent solo A, E, I, O, U sounds - and one for N. ん is just the letter N. They do have the M sound of course, and Ranpo is written "Ra-n-po" so this must mean it's Ranpo, right?

Why RaMpo:

Now it gets complicated. As previously mentioned, Edogawa Rampo could read and speak English. He couldn't write it, however, and so in the 1950s he collaborated with a translator to translate his works into English. His chosen romanization of his pen name? Edogawa Rampo.

Now we KNOW he knew better. He can read English and he's a huge Poe fan, he knows this isn't how Allan is spelled. I haven't been able to find anything on his reasoning, but nobody in the US even realizes this is a play on Poe's name upon hearing it, so I doubt copyright had anything to do with the spelling (and they got way fewer claims for that in the 1950s anyway). I will say that I've seen quite a few Japanese people choose handles related to things they like in German/English and then choose to spell it differently in the romanization, so it might just be for fun. But whatever the reason, the fact remains that Edogawa Rampo himself spelled it Rampo.

On the use of ん, a translator friend of mine once explained the phonetics of the ん character to me. If you're an avid weeb you might have seen "senpai" spelled "sempai" on occasion. You know how the letter A has long and short pronunciations (denoted by "ā" and "ă" respectively)? Similarly, ん has 4 different pronunciations depending on the sounds around it. The most common one is indeed the N sound English-speakers are familiar with, but if ん comes before a sound where your lips press together (such as M, B, or P) it's pronounced like an M. Rampo has one of these sounds following the ん. Certain style guides advise using the letter M in this case.

Since these style guides are prevalent in Japan, it's possible that Edogawa was just following one of those in his chosen translation. Or he might have been being artistic. Someone out there may know but I sure don't.

As a final note for Rampo, all of the official Japanese merch uses the M spelling. I take any and all official merch spellings with a grain of salt, but in this case it's very consistent. Funimation's written romanization has been Rampo (check season 2), but Yen Press has used Ranpo.

So what's the answer?

Technically both are "right," it just depends on your style guide (and, personally, I like Ranpo better), so the answer is... use whichever you like! Such is the way of romanization in anime fandoms.

i admire her for sticking to her guns and i hate that he didn't get the chance to sing it.

i don't know if you've seen the film, but they subtly reference this (and were planning to do so even more directly with austin singing it in the scene). it's astonishing to think what an indelible song it would become almost two decades later when memorably covered by whitney. elvis connecting to it given what he felt at that time is very poignant and understandable, and i wish so much that he had been able to record it, it would've been stunning. (do not get me STARTED on my rage towards that man and the way he intentionally held him back and the countless opportunities and songs E missed out on because of his greedy parameters and general lack of vision. he nearly didn't get to record suspicious minds because of this too, though they fortunately worked that out, but the things he could've done in his career are probably incalculable and it makes my heart ache.)

Yes and also unpopular opinion but I think some of the flaws (or at least the social-justice-related flaws) found since her views came to light are a bit overexaggerated e.g. people saying that her giving characters of color ethnic names instead of, like, "fancy British wizard names" or w/e is racist (ironic given two of the characters of color cited are the Patil twins and they would have found an obvious problem the other way if she'd given Indian characters British-sounding names) and extending that to even saying that black characters Dean Thomas, Lee Jordan and Angelina Johnson have stereotypical black names (as if their first names were, like, Jamal, Tyrone and Monique or something (I swear 90% of the Token Black Girls in properties from that era meant for the same age group as Harry Potter were named either Monique or Aisha)). They even said it was supposedly anti-Semitic for her to give the major Jewish characters (sure Anthony's a side character but his ancestors are mains in the Fantastic Beasts movies) the last name Goldstein because "it means "gold stone" so it must reference the anti-Semitic stereotype about Jews and money" (when Goldstein is an actual Jewish last name)

But anyway that aside I do still love the series (favorite book OOTP despite, y'know, how it ends, and not just because my favorite character's Luna) and love it enough that I wish there was some way for someone else (even if it's not my vision of a fandom collective crowdfund) to get the rights from her but still not have that mean she gets money to use for potentially dangerous purposes (perhaps part her from said money another way) so we could enjoy the series guilt-free without having to unalive her in Minecraft iykwim and then wait until the copyright expires

so i've been sus about all these infinite channels on youtube popping up lately with tons and tons and tons of videos churning out with music and music mixes only for these channels to be less than 1k subs and existing for only a couple weeks and i've definitely suspected them of using ai for both their thumbnail art and music bc most of them say their shit is copyright? or created? by their own channel. some i have seen crediting a site called epidemic sound (which.. is a weird name) for copyright free music. to which i was like sus just bc of the business model of it all... it's not even like copyright free, FREE music like some musicians have offered in order for people to like use music in their stuff without getting dinged but it's like you have to pay sub fees and there's certain rules such as u can only use for one channel etc etc which is a weird model to me.. imo. who's like. tracking down who's channel is using what and so on and so forth. but the fact that there's no way to freely like figure out who a composer or musician is (so far as i can tell without wanting to see what a free trial entails only to forget to cancel it later or w/e) it was just weird. i was like this seems like ai gen music with a weird sub monetization on it cos yes let's keep exploiting creatives for everything they have while we make bank before people start to put the ban hammer on ai shit. welp. i found this.

so yea. guess i'm not wrong in feeling sus. but also. this shit is deceptive as hell. i think that's my biggest gripe (other than the obvious, plagiarism machines people have created now) is that people aren't required to disclose that their shit has ai generated things in it and try to pass it off as their own which should be illegal. you didn't make these things. you can't copyright the thumbnail arts or music just by putting in your description boxes 'copyright by me even tho i created 0 of this'. that's not how it works. even sourcing this site as credit feels shitty cos i was just watching a sewing video that had some banger music but it's from this site so it's prolly just stolen from a real person who made some bomb ass music that i can't support now.

Nicki Minaj flipped her lid on Twitter after she saw a clip of herself in an uncanny deepfake parody video where she plays wife to Tom Holland while they have a dispute with neighbor Mark Zuckerberg, with both men also portrayed with deepfakes.

"HELP!!! What in the AI shapeshifting cloning conspiracy theory is this?!?!! I hope the whole internet get deleted!!!" she tweeted on Sunday.

When asked by an incredulous fan if the spectacle was even legal, Minaj tweeted, "I do not know! But as Queen of the British Monarchy & the commonwealth, I hereby abolish the internet. Effective @ 0900 military time tomorrow morning, 10th July, 20 hundred & 23. BON VOYAGE BITCH."

Minaj's anger and unease encapsulate the general wariness among some singers, actors, performers, and other creative people about how artificial intelligence technologies, such as deepfakes, are grabbing not just their faces and voices, but also their intellectual property, often without their permission. For another example, see author and comedian Sarah Silverman, who along with two other writers recently filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, for copyright infringement — with the trio claiming the company's AI models had used their published books as training data.

Fake Out

The video that ruffled Minaj's feathers was a promo from a new show called "Deep Fake Neighbour Wars" from ITVX, according to Vibe. A press release claims it's the "world's first long form narrative show that uses Deep Fake technology."

The press release states that celebrity impressionists were tasked to mimic famous people like Minaj while wearing very realistic AI-generated deepfake faces. The comedy show portrays celebs as ordinary Britons living in the suburbs. A trailer shows the likenesses of Idris Elba, Chris Rock, Kim Kardashian, Adele, and Olivia Colman.

Some of the faces are incredibly lifelike, such as the one featuring Minaj and Holland, while others are not so well done — such as Matthew McConaughey, whose face looks strange and rubber-like.

The legality of deepfakes remains hazy. The New York Times reported earlier this year there are few legal remedies to combat the AI-powered videos, which have been used for everything from disinformation videos to porn to scams.

One thing's for sure: as intimated by Minaj, the courts are going to be wading into unprecedented territory.

...Thinking about this tweet thread I hate, which yes got widely dunked on but also which a depressing amount of people on Tumblr seem to agree with, when you say "fanfic actively trains you to be a worse writer because it's just pushing other peoples dolls together," or w/e, you are aware that you are arguing against derivative works, right?

Like, even tho the Dante Is Fanfic talking point is; to be blunt; horseshit and ahistorical, Dante and fanfic both still are derivative works, and when the crux of your argument that fanfic is debasing to the writers and “makes you actively write worse” is hinged around its derivative nature you are arguing against derivative work.

A lot of assholes are quick to add it’s “because you’re playing in corporate sandboxes,” but that’s a fallacy of misdirection. If it debases your writing/writing skills to work with “other people’s” characters, the copyright status should be irrelevant. So either that argument is incoherent or it is insincere.

And like... I don’t have a dog in the fight regarding fanfic, I have plenty of mean things to say about Ao3 and the modern fandom-industrial-complex, and plenty of my own views on how to get people to expand their own limited comfort zones.

But I do care about the creative commons, and the thing that scares me is I have seen people use this exact fucking talking point in conversations to my face to say that copyright should be forever.

That the fact that derivative works debase an author and keep them from achieving true creativity is why copyright should be perpetual to incentivize people to stop doing it and just “make their own”. You know, the thing big fucking corporations like DIsney want, because their hegemony over our culture in a situation of perpetual copyright would drown out whatever “own” might might make.

And, this is a bit extreme as a scenario, not all people saying that shit agree with that, but the fact that they place so much of their argument on a contempt for the culture of derivative works as inherently degrading rather than; say; actually getting on fucking board with Team Creative Commons to actively fight hegemony, says a lot about where they’re coming from.

So, forgive me for being unsympathetic towards people saying derivative works are the death of originality. Forgive me for thinking it’s either at best the most maladaptive fucking expression of sincere burnout or at worst people who’re really horny for the fucking Frankfurt School wanting to be smug bullies.

Forgive me for thinking that it’s not only a fucking distraction from the actual problems of the need for an actual fucking creative commons or the creatively incestuous insularity of fanwork communities (Especially the “roving fandom” people, doubly-especially those that run Ao3), but at worst actively encourages the closing off of our creative commons to a perceived seething horde...

IA copyright lawsuit, or “The Wayback Machine is Under Attack”

So, the Internet Archive copyright lawsuit thing is more complicated than it appears. This is a good rundown of the legal questions involved, while this NPR piece describes the reaction to “National Emergency Library” that pushed things to the brink.

TL;DR, the IA provides crucial archiving services (including the Wayback Machine), but they’ve recently started a large-scale illegal lending model that put their other services at risk. This is really disappointing to me and I’m going to write a long, dry post about it.

Essentially, the Internet Archive has historically only allowed books to be “lent out” digitally to as many people as the IA has physical copies stored. So if they have 2 copies of Mary Sue’s new book, only 2 people can be reading their PDF scans at a time. This was enough for many publishers and authors to look the other way (although groups like the Science Fiction Writers of America has been decrying the practice for years, since in many cases they were “lending” books they didn’t have licensing for.)

Because, while this is similar to the system used by libraries, libraries pay for each lending copy of their book (ensuring that the authors, artists, publicists, editors, etc are getting paid). the IA, from many accounts, did not pay for all of these books in the first place. but again, small-scale enough that nobody went after them for it.

Due to the pandemic, they removed the waiting list for these books, arguing it was in the national public interest to have access to knowledge. Great! I respect this ideology. Except that rather than paying ~$0 for two digital copies w/o author permission, they’re now paying ~$0 for unlimited copies w/o author permission. Writers who put years of labor into these books began kicking up a fuss (including Chuck Wendig, who’s receiving death threats because I guess he’s the most recognizable name involved?) and publishers sued.

So nobody’s goal is to get the Archive taken down entirely. Instead, the argument is that the damages claimed in the lawsuit could absolutely be large enough to cripple them. The IA ended the emergency lending program earlier than planned, so we’ll see if the suit goes through after all.

So, why is this complicated?

On the one hand, copyright law sucks right now and many are understandably infuriated at the idea of huge publishing companies suing a free library. 

On the other hand, they were not operating as a library, and creators were failing to be paid for their work. with the new lending model, Mary Sue Author (who, as an average author, receives wages below the poverty line) is worried that this change is actively preventing her from making a living. If she’s a new author, an impact to her numbers is enough to ensure that the publisher doesn’t buy her next book. 

If Mary Sue is a marginalized author, she’s especially at risk of economic insecurity. If Mary Sue and authors like her cannot afford to write books, writing remains a domain of privilege. 

(Also, there’s some legal argument that if Mary Sue fails to actively protect her copyright, she could lose it. I’m not an expert and won’t weigh in on this.)

But wait! (Common Counterarguments swirling on the Twitters):

“Writing should be a hobby anyway. If you care about making money for your art, you’re not a real artist.” Hopefully we are all familiar by now with how shit this argument is; we see it a lot around here flung at visual artists. Pay people for their work! Also, again: this is how you get a bunch of WASP authors and nobody else.

“It’s actually the publishers screwing the authors, so this is a punishment for the publishers.” Except it is...not. It is not. The people most likely to suffer would be the writers, not the publishers. 

“Libraries are closed, so what are we supposed to do about it?” This one is tricky right now, but I’d first check to see if your library participates in an e-lending service (many do). check out OverDrive or Audible, which do pay authors. Project Gutenberg has free classics in the public domain. Amazon has its own problems, but Kindle Unlimited allows access to many, many free books where the author is actually seeing payment. 

“Okay, but why should the digital library of Alexandria go down because some authors are mad?” I honestly really want to ask this question to whoever was making these lending decisions at the IA, because I also am very pissed about it. I don’t know why they thought publishers would ignore this very blatantly illegal thing (not even “grey area”--just under current copyright law, completely illegal). Regardless of whether copyright law currently sucks ass, it was a weird move! And now bad things are happening.

“Fuck off, everybody mad about this writes YA and science fiction, not real literature. Who cares if those guys get paid?” Seriously. This is a very common rebuttal on Twitter right now. Burn Twitter.

“Honestly you’re right but I just want free shit.” is it weird that this is the response I most respect

In case you skimmed all that, my point isn’t “copyright law is good, actually.” It’s that the issue is more complex than donation drive posts have portrayed it as.

Speaking as someone who's worked in academia, the main way my FYW office is tackling AI/plagiarism is through making students submit multiple drafts, which is the only way I can imagine an appeals process for fanfic working. I believe that's essentially how the U.S. Copyright office is handling AI-generated content now, too, with creators being required to provide extensive documentation of their AI process.

I think a more productive way to discourage AI usage would be to make sure we're articulating to young writers what the risks and trade-offs are for using AI (aside from the ethics, since that could theoretically be solved with different data collection practices). When I asked my students about their AI usage, most of them (that weren't just using it to cheat on their Spanish homework, which I view as a separate issue but w/e) were using it essentially as Bass-Boosted Google to generate potential ideas/facts, or to check their work for them. I've seen TikToks of authors (stupidly) encouraging writers to feed their content to the AI and have it "grade" them, and honestly I'd wager that's the silent majority use of AI -- I can remember being a beginner writer and knowing my writing was bad but being unable to articulate why. But we can articulate to people the current limits of AI and why this "grading" is not helpful or objective, or point to examples of AI making up citations, quotes, and even legal cases. If writers are using AI to, say, generate drafts of their fanfics, they're robbing themselves of practicing a lot of different creative and cognitive skills -- not everyone who posts AI fanfic to ao3 is going to care, but the people who sincerely want to eventually get better at writing might listen.

i agree with you about ao3 but i do want to say the reason authors aren’t allowed to link kofi or w/e is for legal reasons (bc corporations can copyright strike if they see people getting paid for it)
