This is just a mini info dump from an Arab batfamily fan because I find Damian calling his siblings Akhi... adorable (for me as a native speaker watching a writer use Arab words) and, not painful, just... itchy, it URGES me to make a pptx with 300 slides and just? Talk about Arabic?

So... أخي, Akhi, Brother.

It's not incorrect. The word is used in the right place and delivers its intended meaning. Other Arab speakers might not find a problem with it. They'd feel odd like I did but will likely go "eh" and carry on. But I'm an Arabic enthusiast, so...

Like with every language with geographically widespread users, the Arabic tongue kind of- deviated from its roots. The language has naturally branched out into so many dialects I myself can't keep track of.

Arabs from different regions can understand each other. They use the same words but for different purposes and with different pronunciations.

The original root language that holds them all (Quranic Arabic) was simplified into an easier, standard version that is used for formal speeches and as a communication bridge (seeing that you can't, say, translate something to Arabic and say it's for all Arabs if you use a certain dialect. Because an Arabic dialect is an identity at this point, tell me somebody is Syrian, and I know them already)

Now, with the fun part.

See, no Arab calls any sibling of theirs Akhi, I myself would burst laughing if mine did.

Yakhoi يَخوي (nonstandard, everyday Arabic for o, brother) , maybe, if I'm calling a stranger from the streets or an offender I'm going to give a piece of my mind.

Or, hold your breaths, my brother is crying, and the lights are out and I NEED to use the tenderest, most loving, most adoring, most revering tone I could muster so he just knows he is loved and family. Y'know? This specific situation.

And other Arabs might just say, no, I use it when, I use it when, I don't use it, etc.

The point is, nobody will mention Akhi. Because it's a Standard Arabic word, a formal word, and a word used in translated texts and stories when a foreign character we don't consider part of us call their brother. It's weird, it's devoid of emotions, and it's like watching a robot trying to be emotional, but it's a translated text. That's what translated texts use, and it's fine.

It is fine, Standard Arabic has been used for stories so much that nobody questions its influence on a character's characterisation.

I'm not saying Standard Arabic shouldn't be used for story writing, quite the opposite, in fact. I'm just saying that if Arabic is used to represent an Arab, its usage should also consider an everyday Arab experience and manners.

Now to Damian.

Akhi is robotic. Damian's personality does allow him to fall under that category. If for his well refined manners and polite, formal speech.

But even the King wouldn't call his brother Akhi.

He'd call him by his name. For my community (and most, I'm sure) siblings are called by their names, and if we look up historic Quranic (Root) Arabic speakers, they, too, call their siblings by their name. Yes, even the Sultan.

If not by actual name, then either endearing or demeaning names.

Arabs LOVE endearing names, but they're dipped in a pool of honey I don't think Damian would like to dive in.

Talia, on the other hand, would most certainly call Damian Mama. Arab parents call their kids by their own titles. It's the ultimate expression of parental love of all times, in my opinion.

(Don't make Batman call him Papa, though. Pretty sure Damian would malfunction)

Well, I said all that, but watching writers include Arabic words in his vocabulary is still sweet. Tt is not even a word, but it's such an Arab thing it's my favourite.

If only I could make subtitles of everyday Arab talk and show you, their speech is heavy with, excuse my English, word softeners, it's like they're talking in a TV drama and not the real world.

omegaverse!Hilson, but—

...it's omega!House and beta!Wilson.

House was disguised as Beta and Wilson gets suddenly changed into having rut and becoming an Alpha while helping House in his heat (the first heat after years).

After that long week of heat and rut, they have to talk about their relationship and going to the next level/round of relation as they're now also expecting a pup from the possibility.

They also have to prepared House of his medications. Getting rid of the pain killer drugs. Detoxing him. Delayed heats and pregnancy was risky for House while he's also close of having menopause. [Uh-hm. This trope.]

Did I say pregnant!House? Because— why not? Exactly.

Being Beta is easy. They don't have to deal with the power of Alphas trying to make others weaker than they are; beta are basically isn't affected at all. The also don't have to deal with loosing their mind over Omegas; beta are basically wouldn't affected at all.

House, on the other hand— could still smell pheromones, having the physicality of an Omega, but that doesn't affect him; only for him to detect emotions and symptoms.

The first heat after delayed years that House was having is intense. His beta medication couldn't even work the slightest. He is one of the eldest doctors in PPTH. Menopause has already been in his mind while taking the disguise-medications after all of those years. He should've expected this anomaly, but he won't believe it; he's still hoping this wouldn't be happening.

And yet, it happened. It happened and he's affecting Wilson; turned the Beta into Alpha. The new Alpha grows even stronger when he already was as a Beta. Wilson is physically adapting to the needs of his Omega. The Omega is fearless; he has to protect him. The Omega is energetic; he has to calm him. The Omega is having a bad working leg; he has to be strong enough to carry him. His "House feelings detector" is even more heightened now that they've become mates.

They're growing to even more domestic to each other. Having House on top of his chest when he's waking up is one of things Wilson loves. Seeing House's eyes opened up when then House getting up his head, facing him. Those dreamy blue of the sea in House' eyes screams home for Wilson. House sometimes waking up with grunts when it's a direct sunlight greeting him at the mornings. Wilson doesn't mind of waking up later than he was usually do.

Wilson is having the scan of their pup in House belly for his lockscreen; updating every time they got new check up on House. He picked House pictures himself to put it on his devices' wallpaper.

This probably is Wilson's one of his favorite pictures of House. He got it from the CCTV. He put it as his laptop's wallpaper. Once, he was presenting a powerpoint with his laptop to a medical conference for doctors, nurses, and medical students; suddenly the .pptx was closed and showed them this picture of House. He could hear the gasping sounds from the audience.

"Please, don't tell him. He's gonna kill me."

Words fly. The capture was somehow received by House. House was embarrassed. But, that doesn't mean he doesn't like it. He likes it, but he's feeling embarrassed. At first, Wilson worried that House would snapped on him about the picture. But, it doesn't seem like House hating it, so, his heart became warms. House confronted him when Wilson came to House' office, inviting him for lunch. So, when he saw that bright red color rises to House' cheeks, Wilson leans down to put a kiss on his forehead, then squatting down to meet his belly. Telling the pup that House was getting embarrassed, getting a gentle slap from House to his shoulder, then he also put a kiss on House' belly.

Going through pregnancy absolutely not easy for House, while also he's detoxing. His PPTH fellows are supporting him so that he still could working as the head of diagnostics department, making it managable for him and the whole team.

In their home, though—

House leg pain came when it's approaching the late nights. Wilson supports House with his growing belly. House was expecting Wilson to complain; either because of his neediness, his weight, his distress, anything. But, no...

Wilson doesn't ever snapped on him. He tried to listen to every complaints that House voiced, that House showed, even when House couldn't the both. Wilson could also feel the stress, but he knew he can't compare his to House's.

They're both anxious about what will come to them now they're expecting the baby to be born. The risk for House life is even higher than any regular omega.

House was thinking about the possibility of giving birth of their pup on their nest. That... was not recommended for someone with House' condition. Foreman, Cuddy, and the Diagnostic fellows accomodating of House making a new nest in one of a room in the ward. Based on how successful the later delivery, it would be then the calculations of when House could be back to his nest in their house.

It took them three weeks to finally getting House done from the treatments and operations or surgeries of the complications on his health after the delivery.

Wilson hands always in House' as he's laying on the hospital bed. House sometimes suddenly squeezed Wilson's hand, showing the uncomfort or the pain he felt; it happens while he's awake or even when he's sleeping.

The HR granting them the paternity leave for 6 months after House was giving birth of their baby (while on the last 2 months, they could give any formal consultation for the PPTH fellows or patients on-line). Considering everything, the baby is having a babysitter when needed, a trusted person. They would taking turns on who would the baby with. Mostly, the baby was with House.

House and their pup would spent their day mostly in Wilson's office when there's nothing House would do, considering Wilson would meeting his patient in an office in oncology ward. Sometimes, Wilson or House would just bring their baby to their Clinic hours.

They're incredibly protective of their pup, but people around them is joyous on having the baby to their care in turns; and both Wilson and House are relieved.

- felt very much like publishers/editors or whoever else were like hey Mwells this series is a smash hit you got anything else in the tank? And mwells scraped together a bunch of discarded scenes and concepts from the prev books and mushed that together into a minimum viable product

- no growth - all character arcs are either rehashes of what already happens in prev books or have no impact whatsoever. MB already learns that it cares about its friends and its friends care about it, that it can rely on them (hello Network Effect aka the most SLAMMIN AWESOME scifi action story i’ve read all DECADE); Tarik being a former corporate death squad trooper or whatever has absolutely no effect or consequence on anything; MB has even already crafted its own narrative & shared it, hello the documentary with bharadwaj??? the files it cut together for 3? THE WHOLE CONCEIT OF THE SERIES WHICH ARE THE MURDERBOT DIARIES WHICH ARE FRAMED EXPLICITLY AS NARRATIVES MB DELIBERATELY CRAFTS & SHARES WITH OTHERS???

- the climax of the book is. A montage.

I WISH this had been cool. It would’ve been hysterical to have a Final Battle be a pptx fight. Except.

It was. A montage. And then all the actual defining decisions happen offscreen. We don’t even get to see our heroes DO the actual thing - MB’s hacking gets a lot more detail than the construction of the pptx. Furthermore, how is this any different from what the corporate side is doing? Literally they’re both presenting competing propaganda pitch decks to a skeptical investor board that has what they want. It doesn’t actually matter that One Of These Powerpoints Is Always True And The Other Always Lies - how is it meaningfully different from a narrative & character standpoint? Right from the start of the series, PresAux are markedly different to all prior humans MB has had experience with - they are non-corporates! In this story about corporations/capitalism ruining everything! And then our other main heroes we meet, ART’s crew, are aggressively ANTI-corporate! So to have the climax of this latest book be “well both sides did the same action but one of them was objectively cooler bc it was Righteous - no dw it’s all happening offscreen anyway. Who cares.”

Well. Idk man, i was fucking bummed! It was boring!

Not to mention that the entire stakes of this whole… thing… are so lacking, as a reader? The rehash of prior arcs is especially poignant here, because none of the central concerns of the book feel like they matter. MB has already spent 5 books dealing with emotional disregulation, chronic issues caused by interactions of its organic + nonorganic parts, its attempts to navigate freedom, personhood and relationships in societies of bots and humans as a construct that is neither bot nor human but its own third thing, and learning to rely and trust itself and others. The first five books do this masterfully. System Collapse introduced nothing new, didn’t develop any relationships or plot arcs, regressed MB’s own main arc for no reason and ignored the entire symphony of a thesis of the entire damn series previous. Wish it wasn’t so :/

Something that I personally find really annoying is how are people still calling Luke a pedo

Many actually tried finding proofs that this is the case, but it was never truly proven to be canon and I myself belive it’s not truth.

When it comes to case with Annabeth, it’s always brought how Luke asked if she ever loved him, right when he’s dying.

You see, this doesn’t mean it’s romantic, you can say you love someone who’s your family member or friend. It was said that Luke only saw Annabeth in platonic way as his little sister, unlike her who had crush on him from the start.

Luke knew Annabeth really cared about him and that’s why he wanted her to help him. He used that to manipulate her, but did he have romantic feelings, no. When he told her that they can be family like in old times, he meant like when they first met, when they both ran from their parents. And that time he asked if she loved him, it was probably to check from curiosity.

Did he want a romantic relationship, no. Did he took advantage of her feelings to manipulate her, yes.

Time for Kelli, this will be quite short:

People bring Kelli to how Luke is a pedo, it’s because they hooked up at some point and she looked like she was Percy’s age (7 years younger than Luke)

Personaly, I find it quite funny because Kelli isn’t even a human, but an empousa, meaning she could be hundreds of years old. The fact she looked slightly younger than Luke isn’t much of a deal, because there’s even some people who are 30+ and look like 25.

Not realy relevant to this theme but some even say she could find someone better, as if she didn’t date a dude so she can eat him later.

For the Silena, it’s hardest to explain to explain because everyone think that this is acual situation of grooming. It would be grooming if Luke started a relationship with her.

You know, we never actually got information that he flirted or seduced her into one. Silena joined him because she found him attractive, and because Luke blackmailed her.

Even though he wasn’t a pedo, he is responsible for mass deaths and manipulations, which simply can not be forgiven.

More of the incidental tools that I find useful, regardless of how one usually writes that are often known in the writing community, but you might not know?

One Look dictionary

Reverse word look up. You know when you're getting stumped on a word you kinda know, but only can get the definition of, or you want to make sure your 3-word phrase can't be said more succinctly? Yeah, this resource should help. (The underline is a link)

Google Docs

I should note that after about 100K words, it starts to struggle. But it's good for editing, collab work, spreadsheets, and also keeping track of your previous drafts so if someone says, "But, but you plagiarized from me," you have a log saying you didn't, so you can say, "you likely took from me."

And so on.

Libre Office–because not everyone wants to deal with Google Docs or can afford Microsoft office. It also has a recovery function, so if it crashes, you can get your words back. (Microsoft Office often doesn't?)

Use it for formatting your manuscripts. For the editors out there, accept ODT format. This is absolutely free and sometimes it doesn't port well.

Rhyming dictionaries–yes, they exist. The slant rhyming is also useful. There are slant rhyming dictionaries too.

The almighty square bracket. []

To all of you discovery writers out there that can't afford Scrivener. This is the tool for you. You've written and dumped all this information into the text that shouldn't belong there, but you want to keep it. What do you do? You square bracket it.

If not that, there is also the curly bracket if you need a sub category. {

It's great for:

Editing notes.

Please expand this note to yourself.

Examine this phrase later because you moved on, but it doesn't sound right.

Cataloging important information you might need at a later date.

Info dumping that you want to break up.

Storing long descriptions you want to use elsewhere.

You're too lazy to catalog in your world building notes great information.

You have ADHD and some other idea has occurred to you, but it's totally off topic. Square bracket.

To avoid plagiarism 'cause you forgot you pulled a source.

If you're one of those super detailed people, you can also color code it. The reason is that both curly and square brackets almost never show up in manuscripts. <> sometimes does, but also often doesn't.

The best part is no matter your program, format, or keyboard, you have it.

Note that this doesn't work for Japanese as well, but Japanese also have access to {} which is why I noted it here.

Spreadsheets

You need to make a calendar for your planet and need the quick calculations.

You need to make a morpheme list for your mythical language.

You want to delineate gender quickly.

This usually comes with Google Spreadsheets, Microsoft Office and Libre Office. But writers often (me included) forget they exist.

But they are useful for more than number crunching. And some writers use them for plotting too.

For Fantasy/SF writers: Donjon:

The whole website, but particularly the Fantasy Calendar maker is useful.

Google Search: Quotes.

You want to fact check a quote. Or you got distracted and forgot to put in the citation information.

To be or not to be

is horrible search for. So what you do is this: "To be or not to be."

And you might get Will Shakespeare.

BTW, Goodreads is a horrible horrible source for finding out where quotes came from. Make sure you have the actual page number/place it was said with the surrounding quotes.

Equally, the -[item] is also often useful when you're searching.

You're looking up say... Kimchi, and you want search results that don't have napa in it You would type "kimchi -napa"

You are researching... I hope, I hope.

Public domain books: Project Gutenberg

You need a back issues of Gustav Freytag's Dies Techniks des dramas.

You need the quote from Anne of Green Gables.

You want to check if this Winnie the Pooh quote is in the earlier or later works because of public domain issues.

You need to read The Art of War for the tenth time.

You need to read Machiavelli's The Prince, because you are writing politics and war.

This is the place to find it. Sometimes, sometimes it is public domain, but it's not in there.

Library

Libby (app), for example. Sign up for it. Get a library card and you'll save yourself money. Some countries don't have one, but for the ones that do, you can read print books and consume audiobooks at home.

Often self-pubbed books are on there too. If you have an amazon account then you can use the kindle app with it.

Sometimes you can also go to university libraries and though you can't check anything out, you can use their catalogs to look up things. You sometimes have to be there, but often they give links to free resources in their catalogs and might be easier to use than JSTOR. You don't have to be a student. Just be respectful of the people there, and try to put the books back where you found them. (usual library stuff).

This will save you going to Hawaii for the University of Hawaii, for example, because you know they have some awesome East Asian resources.

I used my Linux laptop to take a look at a old presentation which had been stored on a compact disc for 14 years!

I inserted the disc, which opened in Nemo, Linux Mint's file manager. It was called Ben's Disc. One item was stored on the disc, a PowerPoint presentation that I had created, which was last accessed on the 19th of September 2010!

The presentation is about caring for hamsters, featuring photos of Rodney, who I had as a pet at the time, having previously cared for the school hamster Hammond. We would later have another pet hamster six years later called Betty.

I kept the file as a .ppt, which is a legacy Microsoft Office file format used in Office 97 to 2003.

Office legacy formats were replaced by the office XML (Extensible Markup Language) format introduced in Office 2007 and later, also known as .pptx. However, the legacy format continues to work in most office apps.

I had it in this format for the Abbey School where I did a presentation, using Office 2003 at the time.

Also the presentation is shown in the classic default 4.3 full screen aspect ratio, so it could fit on to the interactive board!

Opening the presentation which was in the .ppt format in LibreOffice, caused some font issues.

I decided to upload it to Google Drive, so I can see it on any device using Slides. No formatting issues here!

I ejected the CD disc from the optical DVD drive afterwards.

I also added a handy 'Computer' shortcut to Nemo's toolbar, I went to Edit > File Management Preferences > Toolbar and clicked the icon I wanted to add to do this.

This was a fun project, which has bought an old presentation back. The CD disc was destroyed afterwards!
