Edit: the app launched and Is down- I have the initial apology video in a post here and I’m working on getting a full archive of their TikTok up ASAP. I’m letting the rest of this post remain since I do still stand by most of it and also don’t like altering things already in circulation.
Warning for criticism and what I’d consider some harsh to outright mean words:
So I’ve just been made aware of the project known of as ‘lore.fm’ and I’m not a fan for multiple reasons. For one this ‘accessibility’ tool complicates the process of essentially just using a screen reader (something native to all I phones specifically because this is a proposed IOS app) in utterly needless and inaccessible ways. From what I have been seeing on Reddit they have been shielding themselves (or fans of the project have been defending them) with this claim of being an accessibility tool as well to which is infuriating for so many reasons.
I plan to make a longer post explaining why this is a terrible idea later but I’ll keep it short for tonight with my main three criticisms and a few extras:
1. Your service requires people to copy a url for a fic then open your app then paste it into your app and click a button then wait for your audio to be prepared to use. This is needlessly complicating a process that exists on IOS already and can be done IN BROWSER using an overlay that you can fully control the placement of.
2. This is potentially killing your own fandom if it catches on with the proposed target market of xreader smut enjoyers because of only needing the link as mentioned above. You don’t have to open a fic to get a link this the author may potentially not even get any hits much less any other feedback. At least when you download a pdf you leave a hit: the download button is on the page with the fic for a reason. Fandom is a self sustaining eco system and many authors get discouraged and post less/even stop writing all together if they get low interaction.
3. Maybe we shouldn’t put something marketed as turning smut fanfic into audio books on the IOS App Store right now. Maybe with KOSA that’s a bad idea? Just maybe? Sarcasm aside we could see fan fiction be under even more legal threat if minors use this to listen to the content we know they all consume via sites like ao3 (even if we ask them not to) and are caught with it. Auditory content has historically been considered much more obscene/inappropriate than written content: this is a recipe for a disaster and more internet regulations we are trying to avoid.
I also have many issues with the fact that this is obviously redistributing fanfiction (thus violating the copyright we hold over our words and our plots) and removing control the author should have over their content and digital footprint. Then there is the fact that even though the creator on TikTok SAYS you can email to have your fic ‘excluded’ based on the way the demo works (pasting a link) I’m gonna assume that’s just to cover her ass/is utter bullshit. I know that’s harsh but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it’s probably a duck.
I am all for women in stem- I’ve BEEN a woman in Stem- but this is not a cool girl boss moment. This is someone naive enough to think this will go over well at best or many other things (security risks especially) at worst.
In conclusion for tonight: I hope this person is a troll but there is enough hype and enough paid for web domains that I don’t think that’s the case. There are a litany of reasons every fanfic reader and writer should be against something like this existing and I’ll outline them all in several other posts later.
Do not email their opt out email address there is no saying what is actually happening with that data and it is simply not worth the risks it could bring up. I hate treating seemingly well meaning people like potential cyber criminals but I’ve seen enough shit by now that it’s better to be safe than sorry. You’re much safer just locking all your fics to account only. I haven’t yet but I may in the future if that is the only option.
If anyone wants a screen reader tutorial and a walk through of my free favorites as well as the native IOS screen reader I can post that later as well. Sorry for the heavy content I know it’s not my normal fare.
#it’s especially insulting the way this is marketed as solving a problem when the solution already exists#ableism#lore.fm#terrible app ideas that shouldn’t happen#serious#accessibility#screen readers#lore.fm should not launch#accessibility tools that are inherently ableist in design#I wish I was making this up

What if Hephaestus and Ares were representation for physical disabilities AND mental illnesses, respectively? We know that about Hephaestus, but I think it could be interesting if Ares had a different mental state. I do this in most of my writing for him. I could see him having disruptive mood disregulation disorder for example. I could absolutely see that making him struggle to control his temper. Or he could develop PTSD after having to be around so much war violence and death. With this type of story, I would want the brothers to have a different kind of relationship than they usually do. Instead of it being so harsh, I'd want Ares to fight anybody who tried to act like there was something wrong with his brother. In turn, Hephaestus would be understanding of his brother's mind unlike others. Basically, they'd be support for each other in ways no one else is.
#greek mythology#greek gods#greek myths#ares#ares god of war#hephaestus deity#Hephaestus#hephaistos#ares god#ares deity#immortal brothers#let someone be ableist around Hephaestus#Hades hath no fury like Ares#no one better insult Ares either or they're being lit on fire

I have had it with people being ableist to Lance. I have had it with ableism being normalised in the F1 community by the fans by a certain driver. Like it literally permeates the sport, this is the third time someone has said something like this about Lance and you'd be a fool to think it doesn't bother him.
This sport is so toxic, steeped in misogyny, racism and ableism, and I don't get it. Where does the ableism come from?
P.S. I once read a post where someone said that the attitude of a certain golden boy shouldn't be judged because he doesn't act in a way that's Neurotypical and so he might be neurodivergent and so we're being ableist so we should stop. And people AGREED. Like that is what ableism is seen as, that is how things can become twisted by people so is it really a surprise that people on twitter say that and is it really a surprise that these opinions have been adopted by the masses, is it really a surprise that one of the biggest f1 drivers didn't get punished for ableism and now its normalised by junior drivers and fans. It's not surprising at all.
#methinks its that one driver who said it twice? thrice? and now no one gaf#f1#lance stroll#if lance ever dared to speak up about how people have been ableist towards him he would be relentlessly mocked#the way fans of a certain driver to THIS DAY defend his ableism and his refusal to apologise#and you're so surprised that attitudes like this can remain and be maintained#bianca bustamante#do yall kno how tiring it is to hear autism being used as an insult

npd + rdr culture is seeing people call dutch a narcissist and going "YEAA KING he's just like me ong" and then promptly realise they're actually insulting him with the word 'narcissist' & i proceed to backpedal ...
#i have no idea how familiar the rdr2 fandom is with personality disorders?? ive seen a lotta ppl be positive with them. like “they're just#like me bcs they totally have x y or z!!“ which is fun to see#but ive also seen a LOT of people throw around the word narcissist as an insult as if it isn't an actual mental illness ppl can have#yikes ... embarrassing 😨😨😨#anyways dutch SOOO has npd (& other things too but that's not relevant for this post)#DUTCH IS A NARCISSIST !!1!!!1!2 :D (stims & dances bcs i'm tired of seeing narc used in Always a demonising way)#rdr2#dutch van der linde#rdr#npd#narcissistic personality disorder#he's just like me 🤩#when i was still in my “i literally can't be a narc because i'm literally perfect” phase i literally hated dutch and i hated him even more#bcs of how much i related to him#the urge to say “— i'm not abusive!” so ppl don't get the wrong idea vs hating to need to constantly make it clear that npd ≠ abuse & i can#talk abt his npd & relate to it without the Other Stuff™#i once saw a meme abt dutch's narcissism & loved it so much before proceeding to realise it was made by an ableist#ableism tw

*comic panel of dick grayson being incredibly ableist towards barbara*
all the tags: haha love him hes soo sassy xD
#yea yeah writers effect character behavior im a batman fan i get it#but like. why are you using an example of him being ableist as him being a little snarky or sarcastic or funny or whatever#its YOUR job as the reader to understand that even if it was meant as a joke (usually its just an insult)#that its not appropriate for you to laugh and dismiss the actual harm in what was said#ransom note

i love how before the stream happened people were like "hey hlvrai fandom can we promise to act normal this time" and then The Stream happened and I watched in real time as the hlvrai tag devolved into insane discourse and harassment. peace was never an option.
#when i i make fun of hlvrai discourse i wanna clarify that its because I was in the fandom almost from the beginning#i was never in The discourse trenches myself bc my main way of fandom interaction is fanart but I witnessed a lot of stuff#and you know. its nostalgic in a bittersweet way.#getting serious for a moment#i think its normal that some people were disappointed and almost felt insulted. its ok if you kinda felt that way#when i talk about insane discourse i mean such takes as ´rtvs were ableist for doing this´ and of course the edgy ones-#being like ´lol get wrecked stupid hlvrai fans you little babies. you wouldn't feel this way if you were A REAL rtvs fan´

i think whether c!tommy Actually Died or not in the nuke ending is kinda irrelevant bc narratively it’s still framed as what happens Because he tries to kill himself. and like i don’t really care if something supernatural happens to stop death i think portraying a suicidal abuse victim who’s struggling to heal attempting suicide and then getting everything they ever want as directly stated by them after years of never letting them get a W is whether intentionally or not framing suicide as The Correct Option if you’re traumatised and that’s extremely irresponsible. like when I say it shouldn’t be canon it isn’t even bc of the plot holes or it being a terrible ending bc it wasn’t designed to be one even though I do hate it on those levels. i think it shouldn’t be canon bc that’s, like, an actively dangerous way to show suicide and should not have happened with the audience those creators have. i feel the same about c!wilburs ending too. they’re so irresponsible with extremely dangerous topics after building up a fanbase due to having them portrayed Well that i think they go beyond bad writing into being potentially extremely harmful considering how young the audience of mcyt channels realistically skews. i don’t think it’s a moral failure to make that mistake but I think if you’re a channel of that size it’s very possible to genuinely hurt people doing so and i think it being retconned isn’t just like, getting rid of an ending I dislike, i think it’s important bc it’s directly addressing the extremely harmful message those streams gave- even if unintentionally- and saying “nope that’s wrong”, and that’s important bc like. i have been to fan events for these streamers when my health was good enough to give a shit about them and not just their OCs and you’d be surprised at how large their audience leans in the single digit age. you don’t see them bc they can’t post on social media but they’re there and they genuinely might not be able to understand those messages as wrong, which i don’t think doing that on accident is a moral failure again (though if you have a pattern of ableism i will look at it suspiciously) you can still hurt people by accident and it is in fact a good thing to say that you did not mean that and that that’s wrong.
#like.#my issues with c!tommy and c!wilburs ending are not that they’re bad it’s that they portray suicide in extremely irresponsible lights#Like. you know how people use romanticising to describe portraying anything? no romanticising is like. these streams#they’re not bad endings for the dsmp bc they’re inconsistent and poorly written even though they are#they’re bad endings bc they send across an ableist and harmful message that quite frankly could get people killed#in a fanbase that leans extremely young and even for the people old enough to like even have a twitter account lean neurodivergent#So at best it’s insulting and at worst it’s sending extremely harmful messages to people too young to know better even if by accident#If the dsmp was like a fanfic that’d be one thing but it was huge and the creators knew that. they needed to be more careful at that point

I hate how people in certain spaces try to seemingly "out-woke" each other. When I was in college and living in the gender-inclusive/queer housing, my partner at the time told me that my fear of water being contaminated was stupid and mocked me because "Awhhh, poor white kid, living in a community with clean water :(". Recently, I finally got diagnosed with OCD, with water contamination being one of my most troublesome fears as of late.
I don't want this to sound like the "woke-ness" is the problem. Looking back, I doubt their anti-isms came from a genuine place of wanting the best for humanity, but rather a selfish place of wanting to be right. I just want to remind everyone that often the people who seem the most politically correct are often the most performative. In my ex's case, they chose to be ableist yet "anti-racist" in order to feel superior instead of just being normal!
#yes i consider it ableist#they could have been like “that's weird” and moved on#instead they actively insulted me for it#compassion is radical#actually ocd#ocd#mental health#mental illness#therapy#erp#obsessive compulsive disorder#compulsions#intersectionality#anti-racism#anti-ableism#ableism#disability rights#actually mentally ill#radical compassion#owenposting

i think if you can’t criticise people you hate without being ableist, maybe you should just keep your mouth shut.
#personal#this is about something specific but i’m not gonna give any context because it’s also very general advice#and i don’t want to start drama with some of the most ideologically annoying people on the planet#but let me think of a different example. hmm. trump! go on. insult him without being ableist i dare you#and no it doesn’t stop being ableist just because he doesn’t have whatever disability your insult targets. that should be obvious. do better#and yes people with severe cognitive disabilities are still people. just btw. who deserve better

There is no relationship more complicated than the one between a cripple and the disabled character that they love who was clearly (and painfully) written by an able-bodied person
#finchward rambles#cripplepunk#actually disabled#disability#spoonie#like…there are some parts you get really accurate to the experience#and are rather unintentionally amazing in that way#but#hhhfff#unfortunately some of the most painfully realistic experiences and yet some of the most insulting and ableist shit have been from the same#character……like how the FUCK. do you do that pal. FUCK you /lh

Hey! Reclaiming slurs does not involve using them to insult and mock other people! That isn't reclamation, it's just bigotry!
#this @ the many many many proshippers and antis alike who call people ableist slurs#and then claim that it's okay because they're ''reclaiming'' them#like no you calling me the r word as an insult is literally the exact same as a neurotypical person calling me it#god DAMN
