Poppy Worldwide/Save Everyone AU masterpost

Hi, this is the second masterpost I make for the AU. You can find the first one here, which does not include the characters introduced for Chapter 4 of the game. This masterpost is for the "updated" version of the au, which includes everyone up to chapter 4.

The AU's premise: A rewrite of the canon game, but with a twist: Instead of being responsible for the toy's deaths, the Angel/the Player rescues every single one of them instead, with no exceptions. This includes characters like Mommy Long Legs, Catnap and Doey. After confronting the Prototype and sparing his life, Angel leaves the factory with everyone, calls the authorities, and now the toys must adapt to the strange world outside the factory while healing from their traumas.

Some important info: This AU has a heavy emphasis on trauma recovery, mental health, and the relationships between Angel and the toys and the toys with each other. Please check the TW and CW for more info.

The Smiling and Nightmare Critters are all alive as well. Safe Heaven's toys are also all alive. Neither the Prototype nor Harley Sawyer die by the end of the game's events, but the doctor is paying for his crimes while the Prototype is helping Angel as much as he can.

I tried my best to follow as much canon as possible, but I opted to alter some tidbits about the timeline in order for things to not be as confusing, and added a LOT more to the characters we know of. Since the game doesn't give us much personality to them, I decided to use my own interpretation of them. Everything I altered was in an attempt to better fit the themes of both the AU and the canon game.

The Prototype in this AU is not an one-dimensional villain; he is a deeply traumatized individual who did LOTS of bad stuff pre and post-Hour of Joy in an attempt to protect all the toys. He failed being a good guardian and parent to the toys and he is paying the consequences of allowing Catnap to make a cult, isolating Poppy, and having the brilliant (sarcasm) idea of making the Hour of Joy.

What I never understood is like... I thought we all agreed that past trauma doesn't justify abusive behavior, and that intent isn't as important as impact. So when the people who say stuff like "I hate all men" and "All men are trash" try to justify that by saying that they've been traumatized by men, I really can't get behind that reasoning? I mean, I can empathize with wanting to vent about past abuse, but I just don't think it's ever cool to generalize entire groups of people in the process. If a man was abused by his mom and started going off about how much he hates all women, we'd tell him to go to therapy. It's just so blatant to me that they want to avoid seeing the impact their words have on the people around them & they don't want to see how their man-hate interacts with racism, ableism, transphobia, etc etc.

Anyway, thanks a bunch for speaking on this! While I have not read Bell Hooks myself, I agree with all the snippets I've read through Tumblr, and I'll be looking up The Will To Change during my next library visit so I can become officially acquainted with her work. Thank you for leading me in that direction, and thank you for making such thoughtful, informative posts. You're a delight, and I hope you have a lovely week.

I think as well that often times people confuse venting- which is good and even therapeutic- with political and/or actionable discourse.

Person who was attacked, assaulted, and now traumatized by men talking about how they have an inherent distrust of men and at times wish they could live in a world without men is speaking from the darkest place of their fear and is working through their trauma.

Person who then takes these opinions and turns them into actual theory and pushes for this to become the new social norm, however, is no longer venting nor are they acting in a therapeutic manner. This is where it begins to harm people, and thus where it begins to be a problem.

There's been people- feminists, even- a lot smarter than me who have discussed at length the difference between the two. How we need to make space for one, but need to ensure the other is not being used as a bludgeon to harm those who just happen to be in the same demographic.

Ozzie's not perfect but that so good 😊

Intersectionality of classism, racism and ableism

Ozzie's a pretty lovable carebear of a sin, it's honestly great seeing the nuisance this guy gets in the writing. I love seeing a nice bloke who is a little bit classist, racist and ableist; because these are traits anyone can have.

Like how Stolas' and Millie's are there for character development, so is Ozzie's. 🙂

And none of these things feel like they'll be unsormaounable for Fizz and Ozzie.

Classism

Alot of foke have asked if Fizz gets to be mad that Ozzie didn't try very hard to save his best friend. And well yer he probably will be mad in s3.

He begged his partner to keep his best friend safe, he gets to be mad. Doesn't matter if Ozzie thought he had a good reason to not do so, like keep his head down to try to keep Fizz safe; Fizz can be mad for not being listened to.

But that's not the only thing Ozzie got coming due, and means we'll get some really interesting stuff.

Ok you know how Stolas is only just started to understand how his being born in a position of privilege has affected his and Blitz's relationship? And that alot of the things he did wrong weren't out malice, but from unthinking ignorant?

Well Fizz & Ozzie's power dinamic is worse, because he's 1 of the 7 actually responsible for settling up a lot of that cast system...

And while Stolas got a bit of a mixed bag with his privilege. Never having to think about money, and given housing for himself and his kid. But also getting almost no choice in his life, and being forced into an abusive marriage.

Ozzie by contrast has it all good. His big day to day headaches being his own safety record on vibes. And his own reputation making him want to try to keep a loving relationship on the down low. (His own fault).

His bacis maybe unthinking, but he's not actually ignorant of the way hell works for imps.

They've been dealing the extremely class divided by pretending it doesn't exist; leaving any fallout for Fizz to deal with alone.

Like how till recently him and Fizz were in the closet. Something Ozzie felt so uncomfortable about, he outed another royal/imp couple to shove under the bus to help them hide better. His wanting them safe isn't from a bad place, but his actions aren't clean.

Fizz was happy attacking Blitz, someone he believes hurt him out of spite. But Ozzie's the one who physically drags Stolas in, mocks him for slumming with an imp, then take the piss for lossing his wife and kid.

It really isn't a compliment when someone says "You sold your life for a thrust" and to "Pretend you don't see that crust", and equates their downfall to dating an imp. That's mockery.

I'm glad Blitz got to push back a little with when it's proven Fizzmodeus have a romantic relationship. Cus yep they are massive fucking hypocrites.

Even with harassing Moxxie for singing a love song to Millie, it's not Ozzie that takes the heat. It's Fizz.

Ozzie's need to hid them, is directly the reason to tell Moxxie off for the love song, because he's pretending love and lust can't coexist. And Millie wouldn't bonk Fizz over the head he'd if they didn't interrupt her husbands song.

The need to hid, to keep Ozzie's reputation; stops Oz from being aloud to be visibly too pissed at M&M.

Ok that the lightest fallout that Fizz takes from them not dealing with the power imbalance. But cus of staying closeted Fizz gets kidnapped, and nearly killed to keep 'their' secret.

Then attacked by stalkers cus Ozzie can't be seen caring about him;

(Making every other year of the clown pageant something Fizz must face solo).

All for Ozzie to out them both without checking Fizz ok with it first. Stopping Mammon blackmailing him, like Crim did.

So a good action, but it's acting unilaterally for both sides of the couple without any planning ahead. (Ozzie's is the biggest himmo).

Telling everyone he loves Fizz comes from a good place, but it's stepping on a boundary without checking it. When any possible backlash will likely to fall again on Fizz, not Ozzie.

But it's not the only boundary of Fizz's Ozzie's over stepping for a while.

Racism

Ozzie a pretty risk adverse guy, but also doesn't have a cool head in crisis.

This makes him less likely to stand up for what's right, untill he's backed into a corner. (Making some of the stuff he'll do to get out of a bad situation abit of a shit show).

Ozzie's of a both chicken, and also a little bit of a cock lol. (Viv did well with making him a cockerel).

He doesn't yet want to stick his neck out for people he really should be. But is happy to tag in when Bee says Blitz is a good guy. Even though he owns Blitz for saving Fizz twice, and Stolas stopping him himmboing into getting Fizz killed.

In comparison Bee and Tex's relationship isn't a secret. All the Sins know, and basically every hellhound knows. Both their communities know they are in a stable loving relationship.

She stands up for her man to Mammon. And even non verbally tells Ozzie to back off, that it's her fight.

She doesn't need it to be a life or death situation to tell people to feck off if they don't like it.

Bee is willing to give Blitz a chance, and speaks up for him first. Ozzie's more of a tagalog. He does speak up for Blitz, a guy he has much more reason to want to help; but only after Bee.

And then doesn't do more even though IMP are legally under his jurisdiction. And his partner begs him to. (There's a good chance Ozzie could have told Satan to back off, and it'd have worked. But Ozzie isn't a planner in a fast situation).

Even though he knows that Blitz will die at the hands of a corrupt racist political system without someone stepping in.

Ozzie even has the neve to look a bit put out when Blitz calls him and the other Sins on their shit. "All I was trying to do was raise above this stupid fucking place YOU ALL FORCED US INTO!"

Doesn't Blitz know he's one of the 'good ones'?

But Oz is just not a strong person yet, and honestly think this might be something he eventually gels with Stolas over. Learning to be less passive.

But with them out Ozzie is able to tell Ma to do one for being rude about Fizz. Yay! 😁 He's becoming more free in what he can do. Love that characters development.

Ableism

And while taking about Stolas we can highlight the last character flaw Ozzie has, that's not immediate obviously.

Ok I actually think making the loving, and supportive partner to the physical disabled guy just a bit ableist too is A+ writing. 🙂

Ozzie has a pretty big problem with Stolas. (I'm going to need a thesaurus for all the ways Ozzie is a mardy over Stolas being autistic).

He gets arsy when Stolas doesn't take the chair he draw out.

Gets pissed when he's get a real answer to if he's "Still gettin' yo' kink on with that feisty imp?" Not treated as the verbal wallpaper it was. And treating Blitz like all he can be is a race kink.

Assumes the worse intentions of Stolas by suggested he's after date rape drugs. (Going chalk this up as ableist thing too, as assuming the worst in autistic people cus they're weird is really common).

Is creped out by Stolas stimming, and angry at Stolas being excited to help with his special interest.

Is annoyed that Stolas stops him signing a contract to have Fizz decapitated. (Ozzie's just really isn't a planner. No wonder Fizz does all that for him day to day. 🙂 They work well together).

Then sets Stolas on fire for making him a speedy viable contract, because the lawyer is slow.

And after Fizz is safe and sound at home, Ozzie complains that he got stuck all day with Stolas, and bragged how refused to help Blitz... (He's being unthinkingly ungrateful here, because he's used to getting things as he's top of the heap).

Some neurotypicallys really do just hate you on sight for missing social cues, and Ozzie is being that guy.

He can't even hide how much he dislikes Stolas while Stolas busy doing the thing Fizz asked him to do.

(Ozzie, you contempt is showing again bud).

This is all ableism, because the underlying message 'Why don't you just get it, and read my mind for me?! Why do I have to make allowances for your disability, and communicate what I want clearly. It's your fault I'm mildly inconvenients'.

Ok getting back to Fizz, because how he treats Stolas, leads into his attitude around Fizz's care.

Ozzie does a common mistake that all carers will do at somepoint. He reduces the ability of the disabled person to be autonomous. And he does this primarily for safety; but it's also out of a paternalistic view that he knows best.

(He's older, has more experience, more powerful; surely he can't get this wrong right?)

When Fizz has a knock to his confidence about being out and about by himself, Fizz is being hyperbolic about hating going outside. And Ozzie over corrects tells him he never had to do that again.

And Fizz's face drops.

It's infantilizing him, by removing some of his choices. He does this again when he goes behind Fizz's back to ask Blitz to bodyguard him.

Things can be done for a place of love, and still be removing someone's autonomy. Yes without Blitz there Fizz wouldn't have had the strength to tell Mammon to fuck off, but things can be both good and bad.

(Honestly I could probably have written 'things can be both good and bad' with pics of Ozzie doing shit, and call it a day 4 drafts ago)....

This has happened with me and every disabled person I know. Fizz needs to talk with Ozzie and redraw boundaries. They'll have to do this after each situation comes up.

Like Ozzie really wasn't happy with Fizz going out alone at the start of Opps. But they compromised on having his phone on him, and a driver giving him a lift.

With Fizz no longer working for Mammon, and their relationship being public, arguably there's less immediate danger now.

But it's the intersectionality that's making it hard for Fizz to start that conversation. He's not just a imp dating a royal, he's a disabled imp who's prosthetics are gifted and maintained by Oz, dating a Sin who was instrumental in putting his whole race near the bottom of the ladder....

Fizz is likely going to need Blitz and Stolas' input to feel comfortable redrawing those tightening boundaries.

It's the reason he feels like he does have to apologise for getting hurt and kidnapped.

(Ozzie did great reminding Fizz he doesn't have to apologise here).

Alright cards on the table when I've had to tell my SO/carer to back off, it's always started by talking to a friend outside our dinamic. And that healthy. You get a different view, your able to sanity check what you want Vs what practical. And it gives you backup.

Making a conversation more likely to be constructive not destructive.

Because this is only insurmountable if they don't try and climb it together.

What can you do?

DIY, upcycle, learn crafts, it’s a 2 for 1 of getting a new skill and saving money. Can’t do that for one reason or another? Ok, cool, but second hand and donate your old stuff, everyone benefits and it’s more affordable! Or at very least take the time to research the ethics of the brands you buy from. The only things you absolutely need to pay for first hand are food, shelter, bills and medication (also hospital bills if that’s a thing in your country).

White Knight and the Art of Ruining Batman - Part 1/3

Batman: The White Knight is a Batman comic series that did so well that it spawned 2 sequels and the “MurphyVerse” despite an egregious misunderstanding of its characters and themes so much that it inadvertently warps them beyond recognition.

Tw: abuse, racism, sexism, ableism. 

The premise of white knight is simple. 

Batman is incredibly violent and hates the joker (but love and hate are two sides of a coin). One day Batman for no apparent reason starts shoving pills into the Joker’s mouth to choke him after a batmobile joyride

Those pills are actually anti insanity pills! Turns out joker's like an alternate personality in "Jack's" head but like Jack is abashedly good and is able to help the city unlike the batfam but also oh no the jokers gonna take over Jack's head again the medicine isn't working anymore!

Jack tries to be the “white knight” of Gotham and fix systematic equality but Bruce is against that bc he protects the status quo 

White Knight thinks it has an enlightened take on social issues, despite the fact that a lot of the core issues Murphy brings up are either solved on page in comics or have stories trying to cover them in ways that are more efficient than the self-congratulatory way they are covered in this comic. These issues are not explored well nor in a remotely nuanced way.

For the case of this meta I’m going to focus exclusively on the first two pieces of White Knight media: Batman White knight and Batman Curse of the white knight. This is for a few reasons. First, space and time. This meta is already long enough. Second, they encapsulate what I want to say. I don’t need to say “this premise is flawed” 200 times in a row. Finally, I’ve only ready those two comics fully and if I read any more from this series I may spontaneously combust.

1. Themes

Book One Themes

The first book opens with Batman becoming more erratic. No one can hold him accountable. He doesn’t kill but he does beat up criminals to an excessive point. 

He causes a lot of property damage. So at first glance, this seems to be a critique against the over militarization of police - a focus on violent solutions, seeing people on the street as enemies, and getting equipment like grenades and militarized vehicles that encourage excessive use of force. It would sure make sense if this was the metaphor.

But not in Gotham! Gordon cleaned up the police force and suspended the officers that started the race riots. Glad that’s solved.

Bruce in the first book seems to be a metaphor for a bad cop state. He creates property damage, spies on people, and beats up peaceful protests before anyone else can do anything. But instead of over militarizing being a problem, the problem is presented as who has access to this excessive force and technology! In other words, the solution is to militarize the Gotham police department and give them bat-tech! and turn all the Bats into cops with absolutely no examination of any sort of issues a military police state would have!!!!

The portrayal of Bruce and bad cops are so comically bad they purposefully obstruct from the actual issues. We’re allowed to find militarizing the police as a solution because everything else is so portrayed objectively terribly it feels like the only okay solution. 

Here are some examples:

First Half of the Comic: "the batmobile fucked up my roof". Batmobiles cause property damage. Property damage causes a lot of money. Batmobiles shouldn’t be driven in the city.

Forth issue: all the cops each get their own batmobile

(IF THE GIANT MILITARIZED VEHICLES BEING DRIVEN THOUGH CITY STREETS IS THE PROBLEM WHY ARE WE GETTING MORE???)

First Half of the Comic: We spent 3 billion on fixing the problems of the city because of the things you guys keep blowing up. 

Second Half of the Comic: What if we used that money to buy things so MORE PEOPLE can blow stuff up??”

Do you. Think that having more Batmobiles + weapons is going to make the amount of damage GO DOWN??????????

I just genuinely do not understand how this comic draws a straight line from point A to point B. The solution just makes the problem worse. 

Speaking of the group that is fighting against the police state Gotham is becoming, its the low-income, majority-black community of Backport that Jack (Joker) is helping. But because the book is about the Joker, they end up just being set dressing to make the Joker look good.

That’s not how white privilege works. Like it's not the whiter you are the more privilege you have. please tell me you understand that. Applying clown makeup is not a solution to racial discrimination.

You would think this passage was ironic, or a reporter pointing out the flaws of having a white savior, but the problem is this passage cannot be ironic because it is literally what is happening in the book. The people of Backport do not have an importance to the narrative or agency other than Jack. He is the only one who can help them, save them, make them be heard. The Joker is portrayed as a white savior in this book.

This is honestly just the start of the way that Joker is portrayed as a white savior in this comic to the people of Backport. He leads a peaceful protest and heroically makes himself the only one arrested, as Bruce brutalizes a peaceful protest with all of Gotham watching.

Duke, a stand in for everyone in the poor communities of Gotham, explicitly calls Jack “one of us” despite the fact that he just showed up in Duke's neighborhood for like 3 hours, and was literally the Joker last month.

 The text CONTINUOUSLY insists it's fair to make parallels to this poor majority African American community (implied to be due to broken windows policing) and the Joker (WHO IS THE JOKER).

Also the language in the comic dear god I don't think this books understands what certain words mean. There is a constant referral to “elites” with no payoff that feels reminiscent of anti semitic conspiracy theories (and the random Nazi plot points shoehorned in doesn’t help (I do want to be clear, he doesn’t treat Nazis as good or anything, it just seems like a very random decision to have Nazi characters at all).

The themes of book one are just an aesthetic for this book for Sean to use to toss out lines about social justice and "the elites". There is no coherence nor a modicum of understanding for any of the issues this book so much as touches on.

At the end, the civil right leaders and the cops come together with a compromise. Supercops!

Did I just read “perfect compromise” and “super-cops” in the same sentence? Please tell me Sean Murphy doesn’t think that a group that is fighting for low income communities to THAT HE HAS WRITTEN AS HAVING EXPLICITLY SUFFERED UNDER THE POLICE thinks SUPERCOPS is a compromise with the police?!??!?!?

But that's what they do. All the cops get their own Batmobile, and supermilitarized weapons and they hire more cops from Backport.

Book Two Themes

The big reveal in Book Two is that Bruce isn’t actually descended from the Wayne's. Joker knows this, in fact he has always known this. For some reason, knowing that some rich guy isn’t descended from the rich guy he thinks he is descended from isn’t only the greatest joke the Joker has ever heard, it also created him.

The Joker was created because a rich guy killed another rich guy a really long time ago and took his name?? I feel like he didn't need a guy in a cave to understand that large accumulation of capital is often done on the bones of people's suffering. I feel like any history class could have told him that.

Anyways in this book, Joker gives Arazel (actual Wayne) a flaming sword and tells him to kill Bruce Wayne and to destroy the Wayne legacy. because he's the real Wayne!!!!

Jack (not Jokerized Joker) realizes this, and he and the GCPD try to hide this truth from Bruce.

Why do we have to protect this grown man from knowing his billions are built on deaths?? Where else do you think this colonial fortune came from? Magic and rainbows????

At first, Bruce thinks the secret is that Bruce’s ancestor flooded Gotham for money and built the Wayne fortune. He’s fine with that. But when he finds out he’s not who he thinks he is - descended of the evil Bakkar who flooded the town and stole the Wayne name, it destroys him. (for some reason???)

Bruce I don’t know how to tell you this, but did you expect ur white rich colonial ancestors to not make their fortune on the backs of other people???

Feeling like a curse is not a feeling he has until after he's confirmed as not a Wayne. He's fine with being a Wayne if the Waynes flooded the city. But the idea of not being Wayne at all, of stealing some rich white family's name and fortune a long time ago that's where he draws the line.

Again, his final conclusion is somewhat sound - to use money that was built on oppression to help heal the city . But it comes from a flawed premise - he thinks he’s cursed because he’s not an actual Wayne, not because his money was made on the backs of others. He needs to give up his money not for actual social reasons, but because the source of his money isn't actually the right aristocratic English family.

Okay so he gives away his fortune, he affirms that no one is above the law. Good Job.

But instead of actually turning himself in (like he did before w/ the property damages and the Batmobiles), he's going to… kill Arazel????????????

This doesn't make sense from a thematic sense OR a logical one - you feel bad that your ancestor killed his ancestors so you kill him?? It doesn’t make sense from a personal perspective, Batman's been shown to not kill, he didn't even kill the joker when he killed Jason, and now he's going to kill for a legacy he’s already given up?? One that literally no longer exists??

Thankfully after a quick fight, Dick is able to convince Bruce to not do murder but its still so bizarre?

I don’t even understand what the Arazel-Bruce fight is personal, let alone to the point of murder

Unfortunately Arazel making fun of Bruce’s parents being fake aristocats is enough to make him angry again and he slits Arazels carotid artery 🙁. He’s gets so sad about it he almost commits murder and like… he didn’t even commit murder when Jason died djsjjssjjsjsjsnsheh

He does decide to heal Arazel and affirm that the true protector of Gotham isn’t rich families but Batman (its still about him but yannow) . I'm glad that it took 8 issues and an almost murder for him to figure it out. I hope next time he googles accumulation of wealth <3.

IF he thinks so badly of being a false heir of an aristocratic family what does he actually think about all the flooding and murdering of the town? There is no actual investigation of what the impact of this history actually has on the people who live in Gotham today. It's all about Bruce and his feelings. (And he feels bad 🙁)

The narrative wants us to think he's lost everything because of this. Sure his home exploded, but he made the choice to give away his fortune???? And it's insane to me that “his family's legacy” is so much more important to Bruce than his family Arazel literally just existed and Bruce decided that invalidated him. 

Here’s Dick yelling at Bruce for wanting to reveal his identity to the world. He's not mad on his own behalf like about how Bruce's identity would literally lead to his own. He's mad at this abstract idea of the Wayne family legacy. Notice how Dick says "your family" when referring to the Waynes, implying the biggest impact of an identity reveal - Bruce’s adopted family - remains largely inconsequential in the face of the Wayne family legacy, even from a member of the adopted family itself. 

It's insane to me that this Bruce cares so explicitly more about blood ties than his found family that the abstract idea of the Wayne legacy holds more weight in his mind than the actual physical safety and emotional well-being of his adopted family. I talk a bit later on how White Knight completely destroys the themes of found family, but you can start to see this just in the plot of the second book. If he gives up the Wayne name he will still have Harley Quinn and his friends. Not his family bc adopted family doesn't count ahahhaha

As for the fortune Bruce gave up, tons of it is going into the police department <3 thank god we needed more batmobiles for real!

The ableism 

Before we move on to mischaracterization in this book, let's talk about the elephant in the room.

The premise of this book is obviously a bit uncomfortable. Magic pills that cure evil mental illness. Batman comics are of course not strangers to bad depictions of mental health. 

I do not feel particularly qualified to talk about how mental health is portrayed in media, though I do think it is fair to mention that real people with mental illnesses do not have evil personalities akin to being possessed by being a demon, and in fact people with mental illness are far more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators. To focus specifically on how this portrayal is uniquely bad, there are two passages that I want to quickly point out to demonstrate how no thought was put into any sort of portrayal of mental illness in this book.

After Jack is “cured” from being the joker, he goes on the news and says that Arkham is at fault for his crimes.

On one hand, I guess I can see where the story is coming from if they want to talk about how mental health is stigmatized and maybe some comments on institutionalization. On the other hand, this feels like a really weird metaphor to make in relation to the Joker's “mental illness” in this book both for timeline reasons (you usually commit crimes before you go to Arkham) and just generally continuing to conflate mental illness with criminality and violence.

This is also never mentioned again so it really just feels like a hamfisted attempt to say something about either mental illness or the vaguely defined elite in Gotham that never end up doing anything

There is also the panel where they confirm Jack is “cured” and imply that everything involving the Joker has to do with the specific way his brain is and also the fact that when he was the Joker he had low IQ and now he has high IQ so he's cured???? uhhh????

Batman comics have a lot of stigmatizing mental health issues, and it’s caked into a lot of the mythos to the point where it’s difficult to unpack and one needs to be careful with how one uses it. Instead of trying to correct problems with the mythos, Murphy simply adds more.

There is also ableism for physical disabilities in this book but I’m covering that under Bab’s section.

Characters

If it wasn’t enough for Sean to drop every single theme from a 40 foot cliff, he has to go and run the characters too.

Another thing with the rabid Marinette stans is the virtue signaling. It's incredibly annoying cause it's touted as a "kids show" and people want kids shows to genuinely showcase issues that might happen day to day, even in fantasy situations. And a lot of kids shows are great at it, but ML is not one of them and the MariStans only ever care about those things when it makes Marinette upsette while also ignoring her behavior and their own. Like it's been brought up about how shit their behavior is towards anyone who isn't rapidly downing copium while they also go on about how Marinette doesn't have to forgive her bullies or whatever. Marinette's done so much worse than whatever petty thing Chloe or Sabrina or the rest of those middle school bullies have done, and people always instantly forgive her. Same who people just love to claim Chloe caused the most akumatizations or whatever when Marinette's def caused more and has done worse things that didn't end in akumatizations (re: S5 finale and anything related to it + abusing her hero persona because she's been using it to deal with her petty civilian worries since the beginning cause she can't bring herself to face them head on as Marinette so she has to do it as Ladybug. Volpina anyone? Breaking into Adrien's room because she can't bring herself to talk to him face to face?).

That's not even getting into how they cry about the racism and ableism and whatnot Marinette supposedly faces while writing their Alya bashing fics and ignoring the blatant characitures of multiple Asian characters and complete disregard for disabled characters and the show's unwillingness to have any good, well thought out depictions of any regularly/historically oppressed group of people.

Yeah, like, I just saw a post where Marinette stans were claiming that just because the people calling out Marinette’s abuse apologia don’t do it as much for all the other characters keeping Adrien in the dark it's misogyny, when the group of people supposedly not being criticized includes another POC girl and two women. This just in: Marinette is the only female and POC character in Miraculous! No, what it actually means is that Marinette is the only character that registers as a fictional person to her stans, which explains why they hate basically every other character in the show. I mean, either that or they’re just parroting Astruc whining about misogyny whenever someone says they don’t like the main character he, a white man, wrote. How progressive of them.

Like, this has been discussed before, but Marinette stans have such strong opinions about bullying, but only when Marinette is the perceived victim. When Marinette bullies the new girls for liking the same boy, it’s crickets. And when they themselves see a take they don’t agree with, the worst of them don’t waste a second breaking out the cyberbullying tactics. Everyone in this fandom knows “salters” are free game for the worst Marinette stans, and, in fact, I’ve seen some Marinette stans go into pretty neutral blogs’ inboxes with messages like: “you sound like a salter” that sound downright threatening when you’re aware of how the Marinette stans that crawl in people’s inboxes act like.

I think the one thing Marinette has on any of the villains is that, uh, actually, I was gonna say she hasn’t gotten anyone expelled from school, but she did, her targets just had actually done something expulsion-worthy (ignore Marinette doing something expulsion-worthy herself to accomplish this). Also, like, people keep pointing out she hasn’t purposefully done a lot of the stuff she does, although, as I keep saying, when Marinette makes a pattern of humiliating, ignoring and insulting people without meaning to, it makes it actually worse than if she was just being a jerk on purpose, because her victims are constantly made to forgive her for “mistakes” that are just the way she treats other people by now.

Basically, there’s very little any villain in the show has done that Marinette also hasn’t, she just has more or less (more often less) convincing mitigating circumstances for when she does it and the stans cling to and make up these mitigating factors desperately.

But, sure, it’s not the show that’s sexist, racist and ableist with how it depicts its characters, the problem is obviously the fans who have a problem with the writing. It's not like Marinette stans themselves constantly cry bad writing in defense of Marinette and then ignore it when said bad writing includes blatant ignorance of the very topics they hold up as weapons against critics.

In Defense of Vegans

I can’t believe I have to make this but after seeing how posts like the above still get thousands of notes I’m going to. While there are critiques of militant veganism I agree with as a former vegan, some people need to chill out. What’s aggravating about most people here is how much they hate vegans but less in the alt right conservative fashion and more under a guise of faux progressivism. All nuance is thrown out and people treat the vegan debate as a false binary of either eat local, humane meat or child slave soy.

I’ll start by saying I was a lot more anti vegan when I first got on this hellsite. Reblogging anti-vegan posts and picking occasional fights with vegans. I was a lot angrier and was letting off steam as someone who was a former vegan who had a hard time with it. Same with religion, I was a lot more anti religion when starting my blog due to anger at evangelicals. Being able to recognize how it just wasn’t my cup of tea has caused me to let go of a lot of that anger. I wasn’t happy doing it but that’s not a damnation of veganism or vegans.

What irritates me about how most treat vegans is that it’s often reacting to a stereotype or strawman of vegans rather than actually engaging with them. All these posts about how vegans are destroying the environment with their child slave quinoa, cashews and plastic leather, when being a vegan doesn’t require using that stuff. A lot of them are smarter than given credit for and do research what they buy. Many do eat local produce and use hand me down wool or leather. They aren’t just buying every hipster product labeled vegan. Vegans are forced to be put on the defensive and what should be a conversation about how no food is really ethical in this capitalist society turns into a shouting match and “no you” regarding who’s more “cruelty free”.

I can understand having beef with militants if you have faced bigotry such as racism or ableism from animal rights activists. But some people really are quick to hate vegans and justify it as woke or leftist. Sometimes, people won’t even check the source before reblogging it, like the video of that problematic new age hippie, appropriating Pacific Islander culture, claiming veganism is colonialism.

I think a lot of vegans get hate for being the wrong kind of neurodivergent in some peoples eyes. Many, including myself, do have hyper empathy and are swayed by emotional arguments such as documentaries such as Earthlings. They make one small mistake and everyone treats them as if they’re the worst even if they do apologize for it like @sobadpink here in the replies. Many of them do have trauma from the cruelty towards animals they’ve seen which is treated with little sensitivity by people who claim to be allies to those who are neurodivergent and/or have faced abuse or PTSD. While white PETA types need to be called out, many famous civil rights leaders have been vegan/vegetarian like Cesar Chavez or Corretta Scott King and people do a disservice by treating it as solely a white man’s ideology.

Being a vegan isn’t easy and a lot of people’s anger here is fairly reasonable in my opinion. Many are ostracized by their families, can hardly find any food while on the go and struggle with people not understanding or refusing to understand them. Correcting misinformation from vegans is one thing and then there’s just being a jerk about it. A lot of anti vegan people here are the latter. You can say it’s self inflicted but many do think they’re doing a good thing, even if the meat industry is more complicated than just “vote with your dollar”. I would be a bit defensive myself if people treated me like a racist, ableist colonizer who hates migrant workers the moment I mentioned what I eat for lunch.

Call me a bleeding heart or ARA if you want but I think a lot of vegans here deserve more charity than they’ve been given. It’s like this site, when it comes to this issue, is stuck in 2015 as I’ve seen vegans try to explain their side, offer different perspectives and correct misconceptions but nope, another post about slave labor quinoa or plastic wool gets made every week and gets thousands of uncritical notes. People claim those posts aren’t about shaming vegans but that’s sure not how they come off as. Even a lot of the big “anti vegan” blogs here have admitted they went a bit too far and have mellowed out. I don’t agree with everything hardcore vegans have done or said and I can understand why some who’ve been hurt by them may dislike vegans but I think tumblr is way too harsh and intolerant of vegans despite claiming to be the leftist weirdo safe space.

brief explanation... the murder time trio (abbreviated as the mtt) are a trio of sanses (killer, dust, and horror) who are edgy and murderous and also severely traumatized. i really like to think about them a lot because i think they're really interesting and they get my gears thinking. i usually post my art, writing, headcanons, character analysises, rants, questions (all mostly about the mtt) and etc

I wish someone would rewrite the lunar chronicles but better (no offence to Marissa Meyer) and make it cooler with minor alterations. Such as the cresswell age gap, the lack of futuristic or dystopian description besides the author’s own developed ideas like lunars and portscreens, more cyborgs mentioned so it doesn’t seem like Cinder is the only one really, and just overall slightly better writing minus the attributes that make it very clear this was made in the awkward 2010s. This series has so much potential, the whole idea is fantastic really, but the executions haven’t exactly shown that potential. It’s subjective and I’m not saying it’s a horrible trilogy, because it definitely is not, however, the initial interpretation or impression of the “futuristic cyborg cinderella/fairytales” is such an interesting and eye-catching topic on its own that it becomes a let down in certain ways. It could tell the story of all those Pinterest cyberpunk year 3000 cities. Additionally, various writers and authors have their own unique style of writing and it’d be quite compelling to read this series in a different style, preferably a dystopian author like the ready player one type

I agree to an extent. I too would want to alter some elements such as the wolfen soldiers and the alpha mate aspect. It would be cool to further enhance some of the futuristic elements of the setting. However what we have to consider is this--is there time for that? I personally don't see how more worldbuilding beyond the already extensive groundwork laid could work without slowing the story and pacing. Winter is 800 pages already--imagine if you added to it with further exposition! I feel it would suffer, not shine.

This is not a story about what a technologically-advanced society could look like, it's a story about a lost princess who reclaims her throne and overthrows a broken political system--set in a futuristic society. Marissa is foremost interested in characters and plot, still, when you sit back and analyse the worldbuilding, you can clearly see that she put a lot of thought into it. Cyborgs, escort droids, language evolution, robotic animals, political conflicts, space cruise ships; there's a lot of cool stuff in there! I think of all the things to improve about tlc, this would be low priority.

Moreover, this isn't intended to be a dystopian series, it's a sci-fi fantasy series. No, it doesn't have the social commentary like The Hunger Games, but it isn't trying to. The books in The Lunar Chronicles are based on fairytales, and are therefore meant to reflect the romantic, sometimes improbably fantastical elements of such. And yet still, this series explores themes of racism, ableism, sexual assault, suicide, domestic abuse and classism. These are not the main focus of the story, but they certainly aren't ignored. If the series was any darker, its core values of love, adventure and friendship could fall to the wayside.

You mentioned that the series is a trilogy so perhaps you haven't read all the books (the main series is actually a tetralogy, but the whole series is 7 books in total). If you are looking for a darker, more dystopian feel, try Fairest. For more cyborgs, try The Little Android in Stars Above.

So overall, would I enjoy reading tlc by a different author? Sure. I would love to see how an Asian author would depict New Beijing and the Eastern Commonwealth. However would I enjoy any other version more than the original? I don't think so. It would lose the humour, friendships and character developments that are uniquely Marissa. If The Lunar Chronicles isn't written by Marissa Meyer, then it just simply is not The Lunar Chronicles.

That's just my thoughts and I can understand your opinion.
