Rebellions or even just unrest, would be a nasty turn after the way Callow had exhausted and would further exhaust itself prosecuting war against the Dead King. Best to nip that in the bud with a large standing army whose head would be both popular with the people and not bound to any of the great nobles and dignitaries of Callow. Whether Abigail of Summerholm could be that woman still remained to be seen, but for now she was at least the foremost candidate.
I forgot about this bit! And how much I love Abigail's increasingly bad luck.

Consider: Abigail Tanner of Summerholm ending up with the Name the Fox King(/Queen).
On one hand it does not fit with the established lore of the Guide at all. Names go to people with a burning vision and a desire to force it on the world, usually on a somewhat grander scale than Abigail’s wishes (retire, get very drunk). On the other hand, it would be hilarious. Arguably hilarious enough to bend the usual laws of Creation. Yea or nay?

I feel like Abigail of Summerholm is one field promotion away from “Queen”.

huh, we really are back to cat already. I’m used to those multi-part interludes coming in a set of at least three
an oil painting, huh
is this an improvement over winter overdose
well, she sounds similar enough to usual. that’s a good sign
so we’re starting about thirty seconds before the end of the previous chapter, huh
ouch
welp
interesting contrast - the commander seemed to think it was more than half of two thousand. but maybe cat isn’t counting the ones still in the process of drowning
rip
staying vague about your exact capabilities is useful
hey, a familiar situation!
but cat has grown since then. pretty sure this time she’d rather talk
and huh, even younger than cat. and abigail, for that matter
I guess that fits his earlier behavior lol
:D
timeline stuff continues to be strange. I thought her legion first moved out at most a year after the start of the story, and she was almost sixteen at the start
or, at least - epilogue 1 was eight months after the first summerholm fight, which wasn’t too long after the start of the story. maybe throw in a few more months between epilogue 1 and the start of book 2 and it works?
not just him, either!
pretty sure you’ve got a bit of that providence yourself~
nice
I’ve seen arguments both for and against his approach here, it’s neat seeing cat weigh in in favor
or that :x
:D
I know who you learned THAT from
:x
omg
:D
:(
^^
<3
these two
cat you’re kind of intimidating :x
nice
yeeeeep :x
:D
rip
:D :D :D
cat is good at this
nice
nice!
maybe better advice for someone more dedicated than abigail, though :x
<33333
she’s finally admitting it out loud lmao
omg
not the only one who took that path, either :D
fucking rip
welcome to the big leagues, abigail
...rest IS important, though
:D :D :D :D :D
full circle, huh

Cat's weakness, as with many villains, is those she mentors. The most story-appropriate choice for Warden is the only person who has any dramatic edge on Cat: Abigail of Summerholm.
The bard planned this whole thing to become a Warden would be an epic twist. (I prefer Akua Warden but there’s no chance of it actually happening)
It'd be a bit much just for Cat to dramatically propose, yeah. (Also get back to the whole thing of 'if you handpick your 'equal' and theoretical check on your power, how much weight does that atually have?').
But honestly at this point I really don't know what satisfying third option EE is going to pull out. Like, everything people propose seems either unsatisfying or just 'make my favorite side character whose gotten 1 chapter in the last book the Warden!'. So who knows?

Sorry I'm obsessed with cowardly General Abigail she keeps succeeding despite herself
Another flawless tactical play by General Abigail! The Black Queen will hear about this <threat>

Now that she's General, poor Abigail is in the "distinguished" position of being Cat's apprentice, and is beginning to understand what it means when the monsters are on your side.
#a practical guide to evil#apgte spoilers#book 5 spoilers#catherine foundling#abigail of summerholm#abigail tanner#drow#For context those 2 drow can defend the town from several thousand human infantry‚ at night#3000 is just a fraction of what she commands as First Under the Night#Abigail is right to be afraid 😭#queue#live reading#im really digging this shift to 'priestess of darkness' cat's got going on this book

huh, I think she’s new?
presumably someone in the legions. she’s a captain, after all
or not!
yeah, those are all exactly right, in fact
malaga, huh. was he one of the ones from that meeting cordelia was at?
I forget if he was the one she wanted to bang or not
nice
turnabout is fair play!
tbf I already commented on the lanterns attack as fitting after headsman, but that’s the funny thing about escalation. (plus, headsman was directed at a procer army, while this is the same levant vs callow)
I guess this is the result of cat’s little gambit
or one of the results, anyway
...I haven’t been keeping up with logistics well enough to tell if this is the drow with her or the rest of them working in coordination. she’s surprised by the attack, but doesn’t seem to think they’ve come out of nowhere, so
hey, here’s an actual legionary!
nice
I’m pretty sure edgar is new. is hadda?
nice
it’s still a bit weird how they just absorbed them into fighting for a different nation, but I guess black and cat are popular enough to make it work lmao
heh. well, about that,
sounds about right <3
nice
I guess unlike abigail, he hasn’t heard about her summerholm adventure before that, lol
or it just doesn’t seem as noteworthy to people not from that city
nice
god I love the way songs are used in guide
nightfall, huh
summoned devils? you’re a bit out of the loop, lmao
cat only has about 500 with her, so if that army is in the thousands, it’s the main force
nice
apparently this is the guy from earlier. who is not in fact one of the ones cordelia met with, I’m pretty sure, since I think that family was from the north?
ouch
so, about that plan cat was working on,
no, but the enemy commander has
:D
time to realize Just How Fucked you are
:D :D :D
cat has such a great rep
heh, if only
there’s an isabella the mad quote about this
:D
welcome to lakeomancy
