Couple of Reanimator redesigns. Abhorson's is actually from like a year ago but besides a few details it's still pretty okay, plus I don't think I ended up posting it here so. Weh. Weh, I say
Colors for both could use some tweaking but overall I'm decently happy with them! Old designs are below the cut for anyone curious

I finished Garth Nix’s Old Kingdom trilogy*, and I enjoyed books 2&3: Lireal and Abhorsen, I did! But Sabriel cut to the bone, and even two books later it was all I could think about. (TO ME!) It was the best by a massive margin.
*I know there are more!!
Lireal and Abhorsen tell this grand and exciting story of identity, depression, fear, saving the world, and I loved that, but Sabriel was a coming of age story about parental death. Sabriel said that death is something to be managed, respected, but never mastered. It said that even if you can put your fist around death, it’s going to take from you and it’s going to be permanent - because what comes back is never what you lost.
It was so painful to watch Sabriel’s quest to save her father fail, because that’s what happens, your parents die, and you can’t go with them - not right now, anyway. Death waits for you, and you can even look in on it sometimes, but you can’t stay, and if you try to you’ll freeze, or drown. You just live, and mourn, and remember, and find new people to hold onto. You grow into your father’s old coat, you adopt his cat, and you take care of his house because he took care of you, and he loved you.
#sorry lireal and abhorson im being kind of a hater. but sabriel was so good idk how anything was gonna#live up to that anyway 😔#however the stars in the ninth gate and the dog in general… I love#sabriel#the old kingdom#the old kingdom series#abhorsen#double shot

Remains of the Night!!!!
(A snippet from a piece I was writing set in the Old Kingdom from Garth Nyx’s ‘Abhorson’ series. It’s my oldest WIP, started in 2004 when I first read Sabriel. My writing has changed so much, so be patient with Highschool UWP)
There were rumors, even in the city.
Oh, everyone knew the stories. There were monsters in the woods, dangers in the shadows. The peasants who lived in the wastes would not venture out of their shacks after dusk, and traders who traveled the roads swore men made of mist and women made of moonlight stalked the darkling hours between dusk and dawn. But the educated rich only scoffed at that, chuckling at the folly of lesser people. Wolves took those who wandered at night, it was well known, and shadows played tricks on tired minds. That was all it was, and everyone knew it.
But still...there were rumors. And rumors held truth, if you looked deep enough. Smoke could not coil into the air without fire to breed it. And whether the noble and merchant classes had wanted to see the truth or not, things were still happening in the wastes and in the borderlands. Things that could not be explained, things that would not be rationalized out of existance. But the kings and nobles did not care to dwell on it, and there was no profit to be made for merchants to investigate.
And so it fell on those who did not hold a sceptical light to the darker things of the world.
The first time Ruben had seen a shade he had been seven, and had ventured too far towards the border of his father’s plantation. But he’d been a curious child, and had chased locusts and frogs through the fields of late summer wheat to the copse of trees around the farm brook. The creaking of taut rope had drawn his attention upward, and he’d seen the hanged men. Thieves hung for crimes, almost a century before. But their ghosts lingered, and he had the power to see them.
His father had followed terrified screamings to the child, but by the time he arrived Ruben had gone still and silent. Only his eyes showed any sign of life, wide and terrified and unblinking. He had lain like that for two days when a necromancer had stopped by the large estate, hoping for shelter in exchange for work. It had been he who had explained the meaning of Ruben’s condition, and he who had loaded the child on the front of a horse and taken him north.
Ten years of training- on the art of music, sword play and the dead- had led to his final induction into the life. A sacrifice was required, but he’d gladly paid it, and had been gifted with the cloak and gear of his order. At his waist was a sword, forged with steel and silver and iron, to fight any enemy he might cross. And across his breast were the seven bells of his practice, from the tinny Ranna to the ever silent Astarael. All he used to bind the dead, ridding all he came across of ghosts and ghasts and those creatures of the night he could tame or destroy.
And he had heard the rumors. The necromancers had not forgotten the old histories the wars with the fae and the walls that had saved them. Scholars in their own right they hoarded knowledge, and sought it where ever possible. And he had sought it in the wastes, near the borderlands.
The forests held little fear for him before, but as he had worked his way farther and farther from the cities the dangerous became more real. Towards night he had made it his habit to dismount, leading the black stallion through the thick undergrowth to find campsites. Tamilal was a necromancer’s horse, and balked at nothing, but he seemed to appreciate the concern.

A small white cat was sitting in the doorway, twitching his tail, his bright green eyes fixed on Clariel with an unnerving directness. There was a red collar around his neck that gleamed with Charter marks, and a tiny bell that Clariel knew instinctively she never wanted to hear ring.
"And who might you be?" asked the cat.
"I think you should be answering that question," said Clariel...
"Let's see," said the cat. "You're neither the Abhorson nor the Abhorsen-in-Waiting, not least because they never set foot inside this house if they can help it, but also because you're too young. You remind me a little of...Teriel...but you can't be his sister, also because you're too young. Did Teriel have a child before--"
"I meant who are you!" interrupted Clariel.
"What do you mean? I am Mogget, of course. The one and only Mogget."

Now that I’ve managed to turn my focus back to The Reanimated cast, I can FINALLY show you people the guy I’ve been working on for like over a year now that he’s got an actual design!!!
This is Lacrimosa. They’re a banshee and the troupe’s pianist, tasked with providing music for performances. Due to an... incident (which I’ll likely detail later), they’ve become extremely closed off from the other members of the troupe and are just generally really fucking miserable all the time now.
Aaand some misc. trivia stuff below the ‘read more’ :]
I kinda forgot while making him that banshees are supposed to be all-female in mythology so uh fuck it he’s trans!
Wears a mask (as seen in the artwork) to hide the scars on his face from crying, since, in-universe, banshees have corrosive tears.
Unlike Maestro or Abhorson, their mask is just a normal mask that doesn’t emote at all.
Coat was given to him be someone very important. Sadly, they’re long gone now...
In terms of a voice claim for them, they sound kinda like Stanley from The Mandela Catalogue but maybe with a slight Irish accent?
Paint job and kinstugi-ish stuff on their mask was done at some point by Masque.
Character theme is “Life Eternal” by Ghost.
Has a lot of pent-up emotions. Mainly a lot of frustration.
There’s a lot more but this just the stuff I feel like sharing about him for the time being :>
#art#my art#digital art#illustration#character art#character design#oc#my oc#lacrimosa#the reanimated circus#monster#banshee#undead#horror#red#gold#there's a few things i still wanna work out when i draw him again#like i wanted him to look a lot more unkempt and haggard but i don't know if that translated well here :/#he was also supposed to be a lot more gaunt and sickly looking#ah well. i'm just glad i finally managed to draw him!#necrotic arts

“We all have times in our lives when things seem difficult, when we don’t know what choice to make...sometimes it is small, sometimes it is big....but it always matters, always,” Imelda confirmed. "Y a veces, even when we have made that decision, it is still hard to know if we have done as we should” When Imelda had chosen to leave Santa Cecilia, to leave México entirely, she had doubted herself for a long time, wondering how she could start a life here, for her and for Coco, how she could make a living....because being a Super had never paid in the financial sense. “We just have to do our best and hope we are right”
#set it in my incredibles verse where imelda is a retired super 'mamá muerte' who now gives advice to active supers#her skeletal appearance is costume and make-up she wears almost permanently around people to cover up the effects of her powers#i based her powers on the abhorson novels where she could cross into death and bring back those freshly dead i.e saving lives#but constantly crossing has a visual effect on her so she covers up with always in costume#sorry for the long tag explanation there but i wanted to save you a trip to my verse page haha#kittyncir#kittyncir (t01)#v; mamá muerte

RECO OF THE WEEKEND!
Sabriel by Garth Nix
Synopsis:
“Since childhood, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who refuse to stay dead. But now her father, the Abhorson, is missing, and Sabriel must cross into that world to find him.
With Mogget, whose feline form hides a powerful, perhaps malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage, Sabriel travels deep into the Old Kingdom. There she confronts an evil that threatens much more than her life and comes face-to-face with her own hidden destiny...”

The Zanni Family
It took all of Elizabeth’s wiles to get Abhorson Zanni to give her another shot. She wormed her way back into his (and his mother’s) heart and now has the ring to prove it! Abe is still a bit apprehensive, but it’s better than being alone.
Zanni patriarch Escalus spent a long time climbing the career ladder, but now he’s a very well-respected doctor. He even has a lab in the home, thinking about opening up a clinic.

Inktober 2017 Day 30: Found Thirtieth we have Lirael from the Abhorson Universe by Garth Nix. Found here refers both to her Remembrancer’s tools she is using to look into the past, but also refers to her father - Terciel. Her first trip into Death to look, she chooses to find out who her father was and why her mother left the Clayr to find him.
Life has swamped me with duties, but I was determined to post the last two pages of my inktober book :) I’m really glad I took on this project, and have a complete sketchbook of (random)inked comic pages.

Okay, I have restored my levels of edible leaven to sufficiently discuss this week’s Shakespeare, which was none other than Measure for Measure:
- a problem play indeed; it’s maybe the frankest the Bard had been yet about sex in a sex comedy, and yet the sex is barely played for comedy? It feels like comedy is the way he felt he had to write it, but the whole play is very dire and the traditional comedic ending tacked on. (Then again, he does name a character Abhorson, like, yes, we get it, this play is about sex. Oh Will.)
- also? to call it timely would be understating it. Before its time would be much closer, and timeless the closest of all. A powerful figure pressuring a woman into sex because he tells her no would one believe her over him? The woman coming to stand before trial and being called crazy? Yeah.
- interestingly, I think the play’s closest neighbor would actually be The Merchant of Venice, and Isabella a far superior Portia, in that she fearlessly defends the accused without cruelty and practices the Christian morality she preaches.
- meanwhile, what the hell is the Duke up to? He does instigate some of the best laughs in the play when he tries to defend his reputation in disguise, and when he slips out of his own trial in the most conspicuous way possible to reappear as the Friar, but he knew about Angelo’s running out one fiance and still left him in charge? Yeah, the Duke is a sketchy figure.
- Shakespeare has a ton of fun toying with the shades of Angelo’s hypocrisy in a runner-up to my favorite line of the play: “Let’s write good angel on the devil’s horn - ‘Tis not the devil’s crest.”
- But my favorite line of the play, and honestly its truest theme, is thus: “O, it is excellent to have a giant’s strength, but it is tyrannous to use it like a giant.”
#Measure for Measure#I understand it's a hard tone to strike but I bet we're going to see some stagings soon#Shakespeare
