Yesterday the crew and I celebrated How to be French en Alberta, a docu-series made by Productions Loft about Alberta's Francophone community. Six gorgeous episodes (edited by my pal Krystal Moss!) focus on different aspects of this culture. My part was to create a logo and other supporting graphics. Directors Marie and Steve wanted a modern-looking logo they could use to brand the series. It needed to be minimal enough to overlay on various photo and footage backgrounds. How to Be French is about connection and communities/cultures intertwining. I reflected that in the logo by having the words overlap (bit of a pun with “en” being inside of the other words). The tight layout is also meant to convey a sense of intimacy, as the series is showcasing real folks and revealing a bit of their day-to-day lives. A little fleur-de-lis inside a wild rose adds some interesting contrast to all the straight lines and letters. We figured it could also be used on its own here and there as a signature icon. Another little visual pun: the fleur is inside the wild rose, ie, French in Alberta. For the box art and episode thumbnails, we used vibrant colours to reflect this rich community.
