Linda Padfield, 28 (USA 1973)
Linda Padfield probably had no idea about Benjamin Munson’s extensive criminal record.
Tumblr media
Munson had been a back-alley butcher for years. In 1969, he was convicted of subjecting a teenage girl to an illegal abortion. He won an appeal in circuit court. When the state appealed, the South Dakota Supreme Court upheld the conviction. Munson was trying to get this decision overturned when Roe v. Wade was passed, and a court decided that the charges were moot.
After Roe v. Wade, 28-year-old Linda Padfield traveled for 5 hours to reach Munson for a newly-legal abortion. She brought her 3 other children and a friend with her on the trip, telling relatives that it was a trip to visit friends. On June 15, 61-year-old Munson performed the abortion and sent Linda back to the motel room where she was staying. He gave her no warning of the danger she was in.
The next day, Linda and her friend took the 3 children sightseeing and then started heading home. Linda got back to her hometown of Groton on June 17.
By the time the group got home, Linda was already terribly sick. She had a fever and was nauseous. She told her concerned mother (Audrey Padfield) the truth about the trip and was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen for emergency surgery immediately. A doctor noticed that Linda was showing signs of kidney failure and considered the possibility that fetal body parts were left behind.
Linda was too sick to survive. She deteriorated rapidly and died on June 18, 1973, only two days after the abortion. Dr. James Hovland, one of the doctors who treated Linda at St. Luke’s, said that he had considered that Linda might have retained fetal parts but did not pursue the possibility because she would have died while doctors were trying to make the determination.
Linda’s autopsy results were horrifying. Linda had been 5 months pregnant at the time of her abortion and her uterus still contained the rotting remains of the dead baby, who was almost whole. Munson had only torn off one arm, one leg, a piece of the skull and a section of the torso. A total of 240 grams of a decomposing fetus remained. Munson sent her home with a death sentence.
Even if doctors at St. Luke’s had performed an immediate hysterectomy, the infection was so severe that Linda couldn’t survive. In two days, the infection from the rotting corpse raged through her entire body. She was not in a condition to survive a hysterectomy.
Despite Munson’s efforts to avoid legal consequences, the case went to court. The prosecution focused on the fact that infection from that amount of retained body parts is inevitable. The Attorney General commented, “You take a three-inch leg off something, you have to know that there’s more in there than just the leg.”
The defense, however, argued that, “You’ve got to establish the standards of care before you can prove whether a doctor was culpably negligent.” The only standard of care, the defense said, was a local standard of care. What abortionists did in other areas, the defese argued, was irrelevant. Since Munson was the only dedicated abortionist in the state, whatever he did was by definition the community standard of care. Unbelievably, the judge bought it and ordered the jury to acquit.
Munson was later welcomed as a member of the National Abortion Federation. Linda Padfield clearly didn’t matter to the NAF. Neither did 18-year-old Yvonne Mesteth, who Munson killed in 1985 by leaving fetal body parts inside of her.

every time i think about how much the car-centric US infrastructure fails to actually benefit individual drivers i get a little bit more anti-US
we *have* public transit here, but like. if the commuter rail (already a decent walk, or a short drive but only if i’m going to be back within four hours) isn’t running at the time i’m trying to get somewhere. like. it’s 15 minutes to drive to the nearest T stop and then $9/day for parking, plus fares. otherwise to get into the city proper it’s 30–40 minutes of driving in awful traffic, upwards of $30 to park somewhere, and then if it’s for a specific event another 20–30 minutes just to get out of whatever parking garage i had to park in. and then i still have to drive home.
if i want to, say, go to gillette for an event, even taking the train requires going into the city first. driving directly to the stadium is an option but requires buying a parking pass and sitting in awful traffic and spending an hour getting out of the parking lot, or walking a mile to and from a friend’s house to the stadium (which, to be clear, only works if you know someone who lives nearby).
on a larger scale, if you want to go north-south between two places anywhere that’s west of chicago but east of california-oregon-washington, amtrak can’t really help you. you can fly (usually requires driving to the airport and getting an uber/lyft/taxi at your destination) or drive. I-15, 25, and 35 are basically the only north-south interstate highways in that region.
let’s say we’re traveling from helena, MT to albuquerque, NM. (two major cities i picked at random.) google maps doesn’t even offer any train routes. you can take I-15 for 8 hours down to northern utah and then drive 2 hours to I-70, head southeast for six and a half hours until you get to I-25 north of albuquerque, then continue south for 15 more minutes. in total, almost 17 hours of driving. just over 1000 miles, which is over 1600 km.
what if you’re in page, AZ (just south of the utah border) going to aberdeen, SD (about 34 miles / 55 km south of the north dakota border). the fastest route by car is over 20 hours, and requires you to make a big winding circle that takes over 3 hours and almost 150 miles / 240 km to even reach utah, and almost 3 hours more to reach I-70; in total 315 miles / 507 km. (from page AZ to I-70 in crescent junction UT is about 170 miles / 270 km as the crow flies.) and you’ve still got about 15 hours more driving to look forward to! you have to drive almost 5 hours on I-70 to denver, CO (yay, driving through a major city!!) and then 3 and a half hours on I-80 to reach the nebraska border, and 6 more hours after that using mostly state routes to reach aberdeen. total distance as the crow flies: 895 miles / 1440 km. total distance as the car travels: 1286 miles / 2070 km, over 1.4 times as far. and no, you can’t just take the train. and aberdeen is 75 miles from the nearest airport with any flights, and it’ll run you almost $700 per ticket in addition to any cars you have to rent or ride share app fees.
for an EU comparison: from guadalajara, spain (near madrid) to augsburg, germany (near munich) is around 17 hours by transit, or over 18 hours by car. and even that 18+ hours by car is significantly closer to a straight line. (going directly from madrid to munich is even more of a difference: 16 hours by transit, over 19 hours driving. or you can of course take a flight, which will take ~2.5 hours and cost a third as much per ticket as the US example.)
the reason this works is because europe has far less space. the cities are denser, so the infrastructure is denser, too. trains are great at dealing with lower density areas, so why doesn’t the US use them?

They lie, they lie, they lie.
The only way to move their agenda forward is to lie.
And peoples fear, their ignorant, selfish fear, is what makes the lies work.

Indiana Wesleyan's Greg Tonagel just won his 500th game as the Head Coach at Indiana Wesleyan. This would be - and is - a significant milestone for any coach. It's a big deal. A big number. A big accomplishment.
Yet for Greg Tonagel, here are a few additional notes that make this particularly significant:
He's just 42 years old, making him the youngest coach in NAIA history, or NCAA DI history, to reach 500 wins.
This was just his 629th game coached, making him the fastest coach to reach 500 wins in NAIA history (surpassing Bethel's Mike Lightfoot).
Winning 500 games (or 600, or 700, or 1,000) isn't his Mission or Purpose. He has a higher purpose. His coaching mission/purpose is “to raise a generation of men who will trade the pursuit of 'me' for the pursuit of 'three.'"
................
Personally, I've spent a good deal of time with Greg Tonagel. He's been incredibly kind to me. He's attended our SCB National Awards Show after his last National Championship victory, even when the travel situation was tough. He was incredibly accommodating when I went to IWU to present the Bevo Francis Award to Kyle Mangas. He gave me a seat at the table, next to the team, and then asked me to come into the locker room to talk to the team. He believed in the concept of the SCB Champions Classic, and he brought his team to Aberdeen, SD, to play in our Inaugural SCB Champions Classic at Northern State last season.
He's the real deal. Humble. Classy. Passionate. Christian.
Greg Tonagel has a special ability: He has a way to make you feel better about yourself. You just feel better after you talk to him. He lifts up your spirit. He makes YOU feel important.
.................
I think that Greg would want me to include an important link within this blog post. With his 500th win, he announced the I AM THIRD PLEDGE. Here's the link to this special pledge: https://iwuwildcats.com/feature/IAM3PLEDGE
Greg Tonagel's I AM THIRD initiative is real. He not only teaches values..... he LIVES them.
This is Greg Tonagel...... Using his platform as a force for good. Using his platform to transform lives. He is an absolutely special human being.

"We are really happy with this group. What I love is these guys are football players. They are passionate guys who work hard in the weight room and on the practice field. They aren't just guys that only want to do the work when the cameras are on, and that is something that we try to instill in our players. The real work is done when nobody is looking.
Obviously, signing Alex Harrell is going to turn a lot of heads, he was the #2 overall quarterback in this class, and we are really excited to get him on campus to start working with him and see what he can do for us.
Spring ball can't get here soon enough. Go Vandals."
