Hey guys? As grocery prices go up and fresh food gets harder to get, knowing it will probably only get worse…

Potatoes are pretty easy to grow once they start turning green and sprouting. Just stick em somewhere they’ll get a lot of light about 2 weeks before you want to plant them for real and wait. After that bury them about 4 inches deep in a garden or container and they’ll be ready to harvest after the plants stop flowering.

You know how if you leave garlic alone for too long, it starts to sprout? Put that shit in some dirt with the sprout exposed, water it, and you’ve got yourself a garlic start.

You can grow peppers from seeds out of the ones you get at the supermarket. Peppers are decently easy. Start them indoors in a small pot, bury the seeds about an inch deep. Keep it next to a window or under a grow light for at least 10 hours a day and water it enough to keep the soil damp (~3x a week in summer, ~1x a week in winter). You should start them in winter or early spring so they’ll be nice and big and strong in time for the growing season. If you have the space to do so, move them outside after the danger of frost has passed. *with the caveat that they might or might not give you peppers in the first year.

Mint may not be a full meal but it’s a good addition to a salad or spring roll. It’s also ridiculously easy to grow. You kind of just get a store bought seedling and let it do its thing. Water it occasionally and be aware that it will die back over the winter, but mint is stupid easy. It can and will take over an entire space though, so maybe only plant it in a container.

Green onions can be sprouted from the white part with the roots. Just cut it about 2 inches away from the root, save the ends, stick the ends in a glass with some water, put that under light for a few days, then plant.

A short list of common edible plants you might be able to find (*with the caveat that most of my knowledge comes from only one region): lilacs (flowers), dandelions (leaves and flowers), lavender (flowers), peonies (flowers), basically any aggregate berry (shaped like a blackberry or raspberry).

With anything you want to start inside and later transplant outside, you should harden them off first. Hardening off is when you put the pots with the baby plants outside for longer and longer for a week or two leading up to when you’re transplanting. Start with leaving them outside for only a few hours at a time before you bring them back in and work your way up to leaving them out in their pots overnight before you plant them outside.

I’m a pretty amateur gardener and this is based on my experiences. Feel free to add your own if you know other tricks that might help someone.

I will say that it's been wild watching people go "fascism bad", when they're the same exact people who have been pushing fascism for almost 2 years.

Because these people don't view fascism as bad, they just view right wing fascism as bad, they view it as bad only when they're oppressed.

Because leftists for the almost past two years have been shouting for Israelis who have left Israel, immigrated to other countries to be deported. Deporting immigrants good apparently if it's immigrants you don't like. Kinda sounds like right wingers when they are fine with European immigrants, sorry "expats", but dislike any brown or black immigrants.

Protecting minorities good until it comes to jews being physically attacked on campus when walking to class, or when jews in Australia are doxxed en masse. Or when a 12 year old jewish girl is raped.

The core component of fascism, killing people who disagree with you, is bad, unless it's those darn joos with their zionism, because killing zionists is good and not at all a sign of fascism.

I say this as a leftist, as someone who holds leftist values, the left as a fascism problem. The far left in its current form, does not care about actually helping people, about improving the lives of those underserved by the government. They don't care about preventing fascism, they just want to be the ones doing it.

Today i went to an oil painting class together with one of my closest friends, who is transgender (ftm). He and i wrapped up the class later today and went out for some food as it was getting late, then ended up talking together near the docks of my town.

The whole day he was acting cheerfull and happy, without a worry in the world. But when we were sitting at the docks eating some fries, alone and away from everyone, that smile of his faded. He began talking about the us political climate and how it scared him. How he's terrified that soon we might live in a society where he is not allowed - we do not live in the us, though sadly the netherlands have seen some bad politics up ahead.

I reassured him that he will always have my support and that i, along with others, will do what we must to ensure that he, along with all other transgender and queer people, will be safe both societally and politically.

But the truth is that i am no expert on how to go about any of this. i will gladly fight for this cause, but i'm not quite sure in what way. So i just keep talking to people, keep making art and keep helping the folks who need help. Any and all advice on how to is always apreciated!

Please keep looking out for eachother. Do not let them split us apart. Look out for ANY and ALL people unjustly targeted by MAGA, fascists, nazis, the government, or any organization that could harm the people we call our friends.

i think it’s actually important to note something as somebody who’s been paying attention to politics for a while: trump is not the one who’s writing these executive orders.

the heritage foundation and similar conservative think tanks have been writing their vision for what a perfect country for nazis would look like, and scripted all of these executive actions, the policy manipulations, everything, so that any old idiot (read: the sack of bones and meat that republicans placed into office) could follow the playbook and set it up for them. this isn’t conjecture, this is literally what project 2025 is.

i say this for a couple reasons. partly it’s so that you can find the script and read ahead to know what to combat, but also because i feel like we have a real problem on the left of seeing movements through Sole Actors. This is seen for good and bad figures: rather than reference the actions of the Nazis, we refer to Hitler. Rather than understand the fullness of the civil rights movement, we refer to the work of Dr. King. Hell, even in the last few months, we don’t refer to the greater harm committed by the insurance industry, we refer to Brian Thompson. It’s happening again now: to refer to the web of evil trying to enact its view on the country, we look at Trump. You must kill this part of your brain.

Figureheads are the names they want you to know. Start looking into the names they’d rather leave in the footnotes.

ICE is coming to my school district starting today and i’m terrified and fuming about all of this, they’ve already been to homeless shelters and apartments in my area and there’s been raids minutes away from my home. i am privileged to be a white person born in the us and i want to do everything i can to fight this by educating myself and other people about the fascism in the us and use my anger productively not just because i have close friends who are immigrants or people of color but also because this is fundamentally evil, fascist and white supremacist. no one will benefit under supremacy except the 1% rich white men who own more than they deserve and play us like pawns.

my girlfriend, the love of my life is a second generation immigrant from mexico and is very visibly a person of color, her father who’s first gen passed away but she still speaks spanish at home with her brother and they’ve stopped speaking it in public for their safety. she is documented but we know ice doesn’t actually care about that as long as they’re a person of color. i’m terrified for her and her family.

the policy in place of arresting 70 “suspected illegal immigrants” a day is proof that they don’t care about the legal status of people, it’s just the way they’re attempting to justify genocide of people of color, especially south american people. if you don’t believe that, just think about the fact that they’re not arresting white people. it’s only been non-white immigrants.

a lot of people are avoiding using the word but trump is a nazi. this is so similar to everything that happened leading up to the mass murder of jewish people and other minorities in ww2, the patterns match perfectly. i’m angry and im scared and im mourning for the people that have already been arrested and taken from their homes by the mass deportations.

many of you have probably seen this already but it’s a good recourse and i’ll be posting more about ice, resistance and general angry posts about all of this shit as long as it’s relatively safe for me to do so

Honestly as a blind person I’m so tired of seeing fictional blind characters who don’t use white canes or other guides. “They have special powers so they know what’s around them” or “they’re confident enough to not need a guide” are common tropes, and I’m tired.

Are people scared that using a white cane will make their blind character seem weak? They can’t use a cane because they’re so special that they already know what’s around them, and other blind people who use guides are inferior because they’re not special?

I’m tired. Give your blind characters white canes and other guides. Let them hold onto their friends, let them have guide dogs. Don’t make white cane users feel ostracized for not being “strong enough” to go without.

Another thing that pisses me off is when a sighted character comes up with the fantasy equivalent of braille and teaches it to the blind character. Braille was invented by Louis Braille, a blind man, in 1824. The blind character should be the one coming up with it.

Tldr I’m blind and tired of sighted people lol
