so. so is nobody gonna talk about the employee reevaluation scene in episode four?? the only feedback I've seen from it is "oh yeah!! Jax got what he deserved!" GIRL? that was psychological torture. my mans was terrified as FUCK bro. the way he was just GRABBED and PUSHED AGAINST THE SCREEN?? AND THE WORD CHOICE?? "no-nobody can see this, right?" like HELLO? THERE WAS SOMETHING MORE TO THAT THAN JUST FEAR. and then after that scene?? the way he kept staring at the clock?? the interaction with Pomni? AND DONT FORGET THE RAGATHA SCENE. "I like.. hate you, but I don't want you to hate me" HIS FACE AFTER THAT? THE WAY HE JUST SAT THERE AND PROCESSED THE FACT THAT SHE HATED HIM. Pomni was the ONLY one why wasn't rude to him in this episode like? there is a REASON he went to her to have a conversation. and his smile IMMEDIATELY dropped once he left the restaraunt. he was MISERABLE. and yeah he usually prefers things with adventure but this?? this isn't him at ALL?? SOMETHING IS GOING ON.
#the amazing digital circus#reblog#you’re right op but he did also deserve it#he gets to go in the torment nexus as a treat <3

I'm seeing a notable handful of posts in the Amazing Digital Circus tag disagreeing on Gangle's character and I think the big thing about the difference in perspective is really just: How seriously are thou as an audience member taking the 'minimum wage job for a day' premise? (I will singlehandedly re-introduce 'thou' into the english lexicon you watch me, it's so much better than the general-you)
In a world where this is meant to be treated like a shitty little game, Gangle's behaviour in response to Jax misbehaving is really kind of unacceptable. Ragatha's more fucked up by the Stupid Sauce that Caine somehow decided was a good idea to include than she is by the dump in the deep fryer, Gangle did not need to threaten Jax with "horrible punishment" from the most powerful thing in their lives over what amounts to general disrespect and a minor inconvenience. Mr. Orbzman is an NPC and not a person, Jax shouldn't have to hold his tongue about it like he would at a real job where the customers are real people with real feelings. Pomni's feelings over and attachment to Gummigoo are more important than being a good little cashier and playing the game properly. Gangle putting Jax on cleaning duty for the bathrooms when they 'look like a biohazard' is absurd and demeaning because it's a long established fact that this is a digital world where bio-anything is completely meaningless, and she's just making him do unpleasant shit for no reason other than she wants it done and she wants him doing it. And her responding to his continued refusal to play along by locking him in an isolated room, strapping him to a chair, and Doing A Brainwashing To Him is Fucking Horrifying and borderline irredeemable.
Also: "If you have time to lean, you have time to clean." Is frankly an evil thing to say.
But in a world where this is a situation with real stakes, where failure or success in this endeavor Means Something, where Jax dumping Ragatha in the fryer is something that is hurtful and disruptive and unnecessarily cruel, where Jax refusing to keep his mouth shut until he's on break and out of earshot of the customers makes the day of the person he's badmouthing worse and might result in penalties from people above their heads, where Pomni leaving her post to try and talk to Gummigoo is both actively letting down her coworkers who are relying on her to do the job she's been assigned and an imposition on Gummigoo because They Are Strangers Now and there is no taking him back to the circus with her, where Gangle has been trusted with a position of responsibility and authority which has knock on effects for everyone beneath her and Jax won't even clean out the stupid bathrooms when they need cleaning— in that situation, Gangle's very manic and high strung about it and perhaps crosses a line with the whole 'summarily breaking Jax's spirit complete with a horror movie reference' thing, but She's Still Right.
Jax needed an attitude adjustment and nothing was working, so she goes a little nuclear on him. Pomni shouldn't be piling all this emotional baggage on someone who, right now, is a random customer. Gangle's very gentle with Ragatha when she's clearly out of it because she understands something is causing Ragatha to behave loopy and out of character, and in response, Ragatha says the colorful thoughtful gift that's been keeping Gangle together and allowing her to independently function at a level she's usually not capable of makes her annoying!!!
That's somehow so much worse than Jax saying he likes her better sad??? Because at least with Jax, he's expressing his displeasure at being ordered around by someone he previously called "submissive and agreeable" and not having any control over this situation. Ragatha's just saying something mean after telling Gangle she doesn't need help (she does) and thinks she could do a better job as shift manager (she has no proof of this).
And regardless of how seriously thou as the audience member are taking it and why, Gangle is taking it Incredibly Seriously. She is on 'If you die in the game, you die in real life' levels of emotional investment, this is all So Real to her, and anytime the others treat it like it's dumb and useless and hollow, it kicks up So Much Distress within her for reasons I'm gonna trust you guys to think on. And thou might think that is a detriment to her character in and of itself, or thou might be more endeared to her by it, but that is what's happening. So basically the reason some of y'all are coming out of this episode liking Gangle less and some are coming out adoring her is mostly dependent on if you personally are predisposed to take her side by taking the Hard Day's Work At Spudsy's Family Diner seriously.

Gangle is in her own personal hell - Analysis
I want to talk about something that's been on my mind for a long time, and this new episode helped consolidate.
First, we need to talk about the tape room scene. We know this isn't some random corporate employee training video, but something she personally put together (not sure when or how, but that doesn't matter) and it reveals a lot about herself. I've seen people discussing how she projects giving up her dreams, but I want to pause right here.
The second Jax responds with "no," things get serious. That's what triggers the restraints and the brainwashing video. What stands out to me is the "why not?" The line delivery is creepy, but she also seems concerned. Like she can't even fathom the idea of not wearing a smile in the workplace and it's something that needs to be fixed as quickly as possible. Which brings us to the next point:
Gangle used to cope in her old life by masking.
We see her doing this throughout the episode. Around others, she puts on a happy face and forces an enthusiastic attitude, but the second she is left alone, the mask slips. Literally.
I wonder if her attempt to brainwash Jax was a reflection of how she was hammered with the idea that all her negative feelings should stay hidden, no matter what. We don't know for sure who pushed this onto her. Perhaps it has to do with the way she was raised, or something she learned in her workplace, or maybe it was self imposed.
Which makes her current situation at the circus just cruel.
Imagine waking up in a body that's not yours, in a headache-inducing, colorful hell, surrounded by people you don't know who tell you that you're here forever. And you try to cope by forcing a smile because that's what you always do, but the second you take a wrong step, you find yourself unable to do so. It doesn't matter how hard you try: you can't stop crying. Now you're stuck with the ugly, vulnerable version of yourself, the one you tried to hide all your life, for everyone to see.
People talk about the characters coping in different ways, but the circus straight-up ripped away the only way she knew how to cope.
#i wanna talk about how their digital forms also feed into zooble's and pomni's insecurities#<- prev tags#op please do I will listen#the amazing digital circus#reblog

Okay, the newest episode of TADC is utterly horrifying.
I want to preface what I’m about to say with the fact that I’m not a professional on dissecting media. The episode simply shook me to my core, and I will try to articule why. And SPOILERS, ALSO MENTIONS OF SUICIDE AND DEPRESSION NEAR THE END!
The customer service training video portion. Jax is taken into the room and then the 4 notes playing over the flashing images of Gangle’s mask? That is so terrifying to me. The concept of being in a room and being forced to be reformed? The same notes over and over and over again? Knowing you cannot leave the room until “they” assume you are fit to? It chills me to my core.
Gummigoo not knowing Pomni not only DESTROYED ME, but tapped into my everyday fears. What if my friends never saw me again? What if I was an imposter the entire time? What if I’m not truly me? And the terrified look he gives her before he leaves, it’s like something is in the back of his mind, she looks familiar, seems familiar, but something is not clicking. The memory of her is erased.
And now let’s talk about Gangle. Not only is this an EXCELLENT exploration of their character, it also allows the episode to comment on central themes of monotony and depression. Gangle states that they have already worked as a shift manager, so this is nothing new. But the way that Jax and Ragatha treat them throughout the episode…god it looks like it hits home for them. Like this too is nothing new. It’s all the same. Go into work, get berated, go home, again and again. A lot of repetition in this episode, which I’d argue helps it drive the point home.
And the end. Gangle stepping in front of a truck and dying. The most terrifying part. Just as Gangle is happy, death. Just as they can possibly reach their full potential? Death. Just as maybe, holy fuck, maybe someone is looking out for them, death. It’s cruel, honestly. No matter how many times they try to get respect, to maintain control, to reach their dreams, death. It is a brilliant character piece on them.
And I’d argue, this is the best episode yet. And also the most psychologically horrifying thing I’ve seen in a while.
TL;DR: Gangle is depressed and sad and Jax gets nearly brainwashed, banger episode

Guys! Guysguyguys-HE DOESN'T KNOW
HE DOESN'T KNOW! He doesn't actually know there is an audience! Otherwise he would've looked at us, not Gangle! This whole time he's just been staring off into space talking to a fake audience because he thinks there's someone watching but doesn't know where. They are in a game after all, he probably thinks he's pointing at the screen of the computer.
